      Holy fuck, Max felt like he walked into a party right after he killed a man. With everyone’s eyes on him, gazes uneasy and undoubtedly a little afraid of him-- who wouldn’t? Big 6′2″ buff as shit guy in a goddamn old uniform-- no doubt old for this time-- that was (totally, totally not) armed, he didn’t blame ‘em. But, Max knew one thing: play it out carefully. Treat this shit like film. ‘Cause... damn, honestly, it did feel like a movie he had been in back in the day. At the question, Max gave a cheery look, rubbing the back of his neck,
      “ Yeah! Thas’ exactly what it is... I-I’m sorry, I don’t mean t’uh alarm nobody, ” Max apologized, “ Jus’ got back from a rehearsal, is all, we’re gonna be preppin’ for a historical reenactment sometime soon... I should’a changed, tho’, no doubt. Sorry again, ” Another little apology, but he snorted and smiled brightly-- just be friendly. They sure as hell weren’t Nazis, none of ‘em were. The American was able to swipe the Mälort, downing it in one go-- ‘course, he grimaced like always. Ohh, damn, he missed that bitterness... did they change the recipe, or was he just goin’ nuts? Fucking Hell, Max, stop forgetting you’re... somewhere completely different. A different time. He let his shoulders lax... no need to look so tense. That’d help, too. Deep breaths. Just gotta keep calm... improvise... even if talkin’ about some things would bring up bad memories, he’d might as well seal the deal...
      “ Uh-- name’s Max...! I-I hope I didn’t go spookin’ ya wit’ the uniform... we’ve been rehearsin’ all day, ‘s’all. Takes place durin’ Operation Overlord... ”
      He still remembered all of that shit... but, to keep himself relaxed, his eyes would drift around the bar a bit, taking in the sights. Different from the bars he’d go to, that’s for sure... this felt like one’a them real fancy bars.
Tumblr media
      “ Though, don’t think ya’d wanna hear me ramble on ‘bout that. How’s ya day been?.. hope I didn’t go ruinin’ it for ya, hah! You-- uh, you guys gonna be okay? Didn’t spook ya too much? I’m sorry, jus’ can’t help but worry... ”

I Could Care Less (About You)
Genre: Angst, Hurt/Comfort
A/N: I wanted to write something around the time when Arella first got to the devildom. We all know Mammon didn't like the MC very much. It's my own thoughts that he was especially mean in those first few weeks up until they made the pact and I kind of wanted to explore that in terms of his and Arella's relationship.
It all started with small acts of kindness. Taking the fall for him when items would go missing so he wouldn’t get strung up from the ceiling, saving a plate for him when he was late for dinner, letting him copy her homework when he didn’t finish his in time. Mammon can’t understand it. He and this human hardly know anything about each other but here she is, doing little things that would make his life just a little bit easier. Hell, he’d even stolen multiple objects of value from Arella and yet she never ratted him out to his brother despite knowing damn well who did it. She just let it slide.
If he’s being honest, it scares him. Did she like him that much or could she possibly want from something from him? Mammon was sure she was gearing up to ask for a favor from him. He decided whatever it was he wouldn’t do it. He may have had the task of looking after this human forced upon him by Lucifer but he wasn’t about to sit back and comply with it.
The demon made sure to let the human know what an inconvenience she was to him almost every day- most typically whenever he had to cancel his own plans to escort her around town. She took it like a champ though, never seeming to let it bother her. She was so kind it was almost annoying. Maybe it really didn’t bother her. That must be the only reason she’s pestering him now. He did have to give her credit for her persistence though.
“Come on, Mammon! Lucifer left me in charge of the grocery shopping and I can’t go out alone or I’ll get eaten.” Arella said as she trailed after the Avatar of Greed. Having only been here in the Devildom for only a handful of weeks, she was still actually afraid that a lower demon might make a snack out of her.
“Ask one of my brothers ta take ya. I got plans and you’re not ruinin’ ‘em this time.”
Had any of the other brothers been home, Arella gladly would have asked one of them, but they weren’t- not even Mr. Shut-In himself! It was just her and her insensitive guardian demon.
“They’re not home, you know that.”
“I don’t give a shit, human! You got a phone. Just text ‘em. Now scram! I got a poker game ta get to and you’re holdin’ me up.”
“B-but-”
“Diavolo almighty,” Mammon groans as he turns to her, “I guess ya didn’t hear me clear enough the first time so I’ll say it again nice’ an’ slow for ya so try to keep up, ‘kay? I do not care about you. I hate the fact that I have to babysit ya. You could get eaten and I couldn’t care less. Infact, my life would be considerably easier if ya weren’t around. Got it?”
“O-Okay,” Arella squeaked under the intensity of the white-haired demon’s gaze. “Understandable, have a good night then.... hope you win a lot.”
“Whatever,” Mammon huffs with a roll of the eyes. “I don’t need your well wishes.” With that, Mammon turns and heads out the door.
As she watched him go, Arella bit her lip to hold back the tears threatening to spill down her cheeks. Once she was sure the demon was gone, the human sank down to floor, quiet sobs shaking her small frame. All she wanted was just an hour or two out of his time and he wouldn’t even give her that. She had never felt so resented before in all her 21 years of life- not even when her mother was alive had it ever been this bad. Now, as she wiped at her eyes, it really set in that she was left with no other option but to do this alone- gods forbid she ask one of the others for help and then it somehow get back to Lucifer that Mammon wasn’t doing his job. She would never hear the end of it from the greedy demon.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The trip to and from the store had gone smooth enough. No demons had really bothered to pay her any mind, not even when she slipped off one of the higher shelves and smacked her head on the shopping cart resulting in the ugly bruise that had formed on the outer edge of her right eye. Bruises were something Arella was used to covering up, so it would be a simple enough task. She only had a little way left to go before she made it back to the House of Lamentation, but nothing can ever be easy for Arella.
Standing at the gates, blocking her path, was a small pack of demons. She had seen them eyeing her up in the halls at RAD during the passing periods. As they turned to her, Arella panicked- her heart rate skyrocketing as her body screamed at her to run. She wanted to but her feet wouldn’t move. It wasn’t until her brain processed that they were moving did her body actually turn to run. By then it was too late, they were upon her in seconds, knocking her to the ground with a tackle as she struggled and let out a scream.”
“Lookit you,” the one she presumed to be the leader smiled as he brushed some of the hair away from her face. “You sure do look tasty. I wonder where we should start first with you... dark or light meat?” He took a hold of her wrist, pulling it toward his mouth. He was about to bite down when...
“Hey! The fuck do the five of ya think you’re doing?!” The Avatar of Greed snarls as he watches the scene unfold in front of him. He had been in a good night after having won nearly all the games he’d played tonight before decided to call it quits- now it was soured. “Ya know what? I’m feelin’ generous tonight, so I’ll give y’all five seconds to get off that stupid human before I gut ya and string ya up by your entrails.”
He only needed until the count of one and a change into his demon form before the pack of demons made the right choice and booked it. The Avatar of Greed let out an irritated sigh as he walked over to Arella and hoisted her up by the arm.
“You’re fucking lucky, ya know that, girly? If I didn’t come home when I did, you’d be dead right now. How are you that damn stupid, huh?”
“’m sorry, I-,” Her voice was small and a little bit slurred as she tried to get her footing.
“I don’t wanna hear any excuses, right now. Just get inside the house go lay down or somethin’- whatever it is that you humans do ta calm down.” He gave her a bit of a rough shove and she scrambled for the doors while he gathered up the bags she had dropped and brought them inside the house.
Arella made a beeline for her room and curled up under the covers. Her headache from the fall earlier was even worse and now her arm was hurting from the strength of Mammon’s grip when he pulled her up from the ground.
“I want to go home....” she sniffled quietly into her pillow. “I should have never done this.”
The human thought she’d find a place for herself on this exchange programme but now she thinks this was all a big mistake. She had no idea what exactly she was signing up for only that something in the back of her mind yelling at her to do so. These last few weeks had done nothing but to serve her late mother’s words as true: that she was trash and so deserved to be treated as such.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Out in the kitchen, Mammon is unloading and putting away the groceries that weren’t crushed or broken after the incident outside when he came across a bag filled exclusively with cup noodles. There had to have been at least twenty of them that she had managed to cram into the bag- all in his favorite flavor no less. A look of surprise crossed his face. He had only mentioned this in passing to her once before and he wondered how she managed to get her hands on them as this specific flavor was kept on the top shelf of that section. Not something that would be a problem for someone as tall as himself but for her? She was 4’11”! She would have had to scale the shelfs just to have even the smallest chance of reaching them.
Setting the package of cup noodles he was holding down, Mammon looked to Arella’s door before looking back to the noodles. Again, those questions rang in his head. Just what was her deal? He thinks, she’s always doin’ all these favors for me and never asks for anything in return from me. Well, no I can’t say that... She did ask one thing of me and that was ta go grocery shoppin’ with her because she was afraid ta go alone- for me ta do the one job Lucifer assigned me and I essentially told her ta fuck off. The demon thinks back to their earlier exchange- how he could see the fear in her eyes and the tears that were starting to form right before he left. Great.... Now I feel guilty... I should probably go apologize and see if I can get her to stay quiet ‘bout this whole thing...
Knocking on the door- something the demon hardly ever did- Mammon waited for a response. When he didn’t get one, he just let himself in. “Arella I-!” He stopped as there was there was a noticeable flinch from under the covers.
“I’m sorry!” She squeaked out, “Don’t hurt me.”
He raised an eyebrow at her response. Did she really think he was going to hurt her somehow? Well, all things considered, the demon can’t say he’s really all that surprised. He grabs the ends of the duvet and yanks it off of her, watching as Arella curls up and raises her arms to shield her head as if readying herself for blows that would never come.
Mammon knows that response all too intimately from the times where Lucifer would beat the ever-loving fuck out of him for indulging in his sin.
“Hey, calm down, okay. I ain’t gonna lay a hand on ya like that. Not only would Lucifer have my head, but I ain’t about beatin’ up on girls anyway.” He kneels down at the side of her bed and is horrified to see an ugly bruise marring the skin beside her eye. She does eventually calm down and pulls her arms away from her head after a few minutes of nothing happening. “Atta girl, now look at me,”
When Arella does open her pupils are dilated and now the demon is a little concerned. Humans’ pupils aren’t supposed to be that dilated, are they? That would mean... Mammon fishes his D.D.D. out of his pocket and shines the flashlight right in her eyes.
“What the fuck, Mammon!” Arella recoils as she hides her face once more and Mammon turns the flashlight off. “You’re such an ass!”
“I knew it.” He tsks, “When did you hit your head? Was it when those idiots tackled you to the ground or did you fall off one of the selves at the store?”
“I didn’t hit my head!” The human retorts, “I’m fine, my head just hurts.”
“Ya got a concussion, ya dumb human! Now out with it. Ya very obviously fell and I wanna know when it happened and how high you fell from!” For someone who couldn’t care less about her, he’s surprisingly concerned right now. If she slipped off one of the shelves at the store, he would be in hot water with Lucifer.
“I said I’m fine!” Arella abruptly stood up, swaying as she did, glaring daggers at the white-haired demon who looked up at her with a look of shock. Where did his docile little human go? “And what do you care anyway!? You said it yourself: You hate me and I’m just an inconvenience to you!”
“Now hold on a tick, I never said that exactly. You’re puttin’ words in my mouth. And you’re gonna fall standin’ on the bed like that. You’re already wobblin’.” he may not have said the part about hating her outright but at the very least he heavily implied it.
“Just get out of my ro-” She let out a yelp as she went toppling forward and the demon rushed to catch her. She landed slung over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
“See I told ya you were gonna fall.” He huffed as he readjusted her while she pounded her fists against his back, struggling against his hold on her as he headed back out to the kitchen.
“Mammon, you put me down this instant! I’m not a sack of flour!”
“Stop being a brat and let me help ya!” The Avatar of Greed says as he places her on the island counter top. “Now stay there while I get you some ice for that bruise and some medicine for that headache of yours.”
Arella just sits there in shock of what he said. He wanted to... help her? That was new. She’s drawn out of her thoughts a few minutes later when she feels of bag of ice being pressed against the bruise. She let out a hiss as she tries to move away from it but it’s then that she notices his hand holding the other side of her face so she can’t move all that much.
“Quit squirming, will ya. It’s just a bag of ice.” He looks into her eyes before shifting the bag of ice over and running his thumb over the outside of her eye socket. “Doesn’t feel like anything’s busted in there. Ya got off lucky, kid... here take these.” he has a pill in his hand
“I’m not a kid,” Arella puffs her cheeks out in a pout. “Why’re you doing this when you said earlier that you didn’t care about me...?” she takes the medicine with a swig of water.
“Don’t get it twisted. I’m only doing this because if Lucifer finds out that you went to the store without me, I’ll be hanging from my toes for the next of the week. I’d rather not have a concussion of my own from getting dropped on my head when he decides I learned my lesson.”
“I won’t tell him if you don’t...” she says softly, “You don’t have to be nice to me. I know I don’t deserve it...”
“Huh?”
“N-nothing.”
“Now hold on there,” The demon says as he moves the bag back to where it was before, “You’re not gonna speed past that and act like ya didn’t just say what ya just said.”
“It’s nothing really,” Arella eyes dart around looking everywhere but Mammon’s. “Let’s just change the subject.”
“Alright, you can answer my earlier question then. How did you fall?”
“I slipped while climbing down from one of the shelving units at the store.... and smacked my head on the shopping cart.”
“No offense, but you’re kinda dumb. You were tryin’ ta get those noodles down, weren’t ya? You could have just grabbed whatever was at eye level or in your reach. You would have been an easy meal for a demon if you had passed out.”
“I know,” She sighed. “But that flavor is your favorite and I got everybody else’s favorites. It wouldn’t have been fair to not get yours.”
“It ain’t worth a concussion, short stack.” Once he’s sure she won’t move away, he lowers his hand from the side that isn’t icing the bruise and places it over hers. “Thanks though. And... I’m sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t think you’d actually go out and try to get yourself eaten because I said I wouldn’t care.”
“I mean, that wasn’t my goal,” She sighed. “But I guess that’s the mess I got myself into huh?”
“Ya wouldn’t have if I would have done my job and gone with ya...” He scoots her over and then hops up on the island counter next to her. “I don’t get you, ya know...”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re too nice to me. I’ve been a jackass ta ya but you never seem to let it bother ya. You’re always coverin’ for me when I steal things from the house ta sell and you never said anything after I stole that necklace and other things from you. You save my plate at dinner when I don’t make it right away and you’ve lied right ta Lucifer’s face on multiple accounts for me... why? Why do you do these things?”
“I just wanted you to be nice to me. I know I just kind of got forced on you...  I thought maybe if I extended the olive branch first, we could be at least somewhat civil with each other... but no matter what I did, it didn’t change the way you treated me so I just kept pushing harder and harder to see if maybe...”
“I get what you’re sayin’...” he hummed. “Let’s start over then... I’ll look out for ya for the rest of the year if you’ll forgive me... It would be ta both of our benefit.”
She nodded as he hopped down from the counter. “Alright, let’s go then.”
“Go? Go where?”
“Back ta the store, some of the stuff ya bought got damaged when those demons attacked ya.”
“Oh... Alright... This isn’t some kind of trick, is it? You’re not going to ditch me, are you?”
“Nah, I won’t. And if anybody wants to eat ya, they’ll have to go through me, first. Got it?” he says as holds his hand out to her. She hesitantly took it and he tugged her along after him as they headed out. She hopes that maybe they could even become friends at some point. That maybe- just maybe- this is a turning point for them.

Fire
Fanfic request by @stars-shaped-clouds
I like the way you think.
Warnings: Angy beej, Red haired goblin man, “MY MOMMY ISSUES ARE MY ISSUES”
Gender: Female
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“God you really didn’t think beej would do this.”
You woke up to your alarm going off, Today. Today was the day. Today was the day your partner was going to meet your demonic roommate they heard so much about, and insisted on meeting. You sat up, your hair an absolute fluffy mess, god you slept hard sometimes. “Like a true dead person, babes!” beej had commented once. Though, usually you would love his odd jokes, recently you were nervous. You tried to push your thoughts away as you got up and went about your morning routine.
Shower, Brush teeth, Brush hair, Get dressed, Go downstairs.
The house stood oddly quiet as you grabbed your bag and put your phone away. “Beej I SWEAR on my life if you scare me again I will kick you out!!!!” You heard a groan and he came out from the painting on the wall. “Always ruinin’ my fun babes!” You shot him a death glare and he simply made a kissy face at you, if only you knew how much he wanted you. How he dreamed of you, Do demons even dream? He would scream “YES!!” from the heavens above if he could. he simply watched you finish your morning run down before you ran out the door to work. Once he was sure you were gone, he went straight to the attic to find the gift he stole (Ahem) Bought**** for you. It was a pretty little locket with a black and white striped beetle on it. When opened, a girl would pop up and dance to a tune on her stand. He had picked it out because you loved weird knick knacks like this. But to be fair, he got it weeks ago on a whim, and he was never able to convince himself to give it to you. He stared at it and sighed. Then went about his day.
When you arrived home with your partner in tow, you were hesitant to summon beej. He’s always been a clingy bug, and definitely a jealous one. You didn't want him to feel insecure about you going on dates with anyone, god if you only knew.
I guess that's how you got here. Beej glaring at your partner as they pulled you close on the couch when you told him. He didn't even bother to hide his hair, wich had turned a crimson red. He did his best to not lash out for your sake, but when your partner nuzzles into your neck, it was over. And you're sure even god would here what he was about to do.
He grumbled and grabbed your partner by their shirt, picking them up with surprising ease and dropping them on the floor in front of him. His hair looked like fire as he glared down at them. You started panicking, you didn't know what to do, you knew that when he got angry, very LITTLE could calm him down. "Get. Out." Was all he said. Your partner looked to you but beetlejuice grabbed them again and all but screeched "I SAID GET THE HELL OUT." They didn't need to be told a third time as they grabbed their back and nearly sprinted to the door. "STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY BREATHER."
When he tuned back in, he saw your face and his dead, stiff heart dropped. "Babes, I'm sorry. I-" you just stood and looked him dead in the eyes. "What the hell was that about. God, can't I have ANYTHING that doesn't revolve around you!?" He just whimpered and zoomed off towards the attic, but a soft metal click on the floor that caught your attention, made him panic. And before he could even turn around to process what he dropped, you were holding the locket gently in your palm, a finger traced the beetle and it popped open. A tune rang gentle through the hall as the little girl danced and swayed, and a picture of you and beej smiling stared back at you, except he wasn't looking at the camera, he was looking at you. You looked up at him, and his hair went pink. "Beej....what." and he didn't even respond at first. He started crying. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he slumped to the floor, you took a chance and stepped to him, unclasping the necklace and reclasping it around his neck, shutting it. "Beej...please tell me what's wrong." He clung to the locket and through shaky breath he finally let it out. "I love you." You sat in front of him and held his hands. "I know that silly..." But the look in his eyes was different. "No, babes. I mean I'm in love with you. I'm sorry I got so jealous I just...." Your hand grazed his cheek and he winced. "Beej. I know." He stared at you. "Then why was that breather...?" You smiled softly. "Well, they wouldn't stop asking me out at work, and...I don't know beej." He took the necklace off, "this... isn't for me.". "What?" You leaned closer. "It's for you." He placed it around your neck and sighed. You felt your face heat up as you held it. "You stole this, didn't you?" He started laughing, which made you laugh.
It was gonna be a long night.
valentine’s day boogaloo - guidelines - ko-fi - majimako zine
~~
“Stopfidgeting,” Makoto implored with a smile as she brushed a straystreak of sunscreen on Majima’s cheek, “No one can see anything,”
“Sure,” Majima grumbled, clearly upset, “But, what if—,”
“It’ll be fine. Just enjoy the summer day,”
Majimahuffed, glancing around the array of colorful towels, umbrellas, andswimsuits as families relaxed, played, and wandered about the beach.The sun was warm but not oppressive, the breeze brisk and refreshing,and the water clear and calm. Makotowas wearing the swimsuit they had bought together, simple and paleblue. He wore trunks and a white button down shirt, all long enoughto cover the tattoos that would ban him from so friendly a beach.Frowning at her from behind sunglasses that barely concealed hisruined eye, he sighed and flopped back on the towel.
“Fine. Ya win this round.”
“Do I?” Makoto asked, amused as she rummaged in their bag, “Tothink, Majima Goro admitting defeat so easily!”
“Oi,watch it,” Majima grunted, “Or I’m gonna start keepin’ scoreand then you’ll be in trouble!”
“WillI be, I wonder,” Makoto mused under her breath as she finally foundthe book she had brought to read. Majima made a noise that suggestedhe had heard her but ultimately the conversation ended in favor ofthe playful sounds of kids running about the beach with the undertoneof the rhythmic waves. Majimadozed. Makoto read.
Thespray of kicked sand jolted Majima awake.
Rowdy, drunk youths cackled as they passed by, carelessly kickingmore sand onto him as they went. Makoto yelped, first in shock thenin worry as Majima started coughing and heaving, curling in panic.
“Goro? Goro!” she brushed sand off his shoulders as he tore hissunglasses off and pawed at his eyes. Taking one of his wrists as herother hand dove into the bag, she started to coo as he cussed andhissed.
“Don’t scratch! Don’t scratch at it, just blink!”
“Blink,”Majima rasped, angry but not at her, “Itfuckin’ burns!!”
“Iknow,” she pulled a water bottle out and frantically twisted thecap off, “I know, I know, here—,”
Takinghis cheek to turn him to her, she frowned, watching him blinking inpanic and pain as tears rolled down his face. Pouring the water overhis eyes and trying to avoid his shirt as much as possible, Makotocontinued to coo and help him rid the sand from his face. She brushedher thumbs as gently as possible along his eyelids, taking care tonote his ruined side once he regained his sight. As she coaxed grainsof sand out of the scar tissue, he scowled.
“Fuckin’shitbags,”Majima spat to the side, “See them get away with that on a tatbeach, I fuckin’ bet they’ll be cryin’ between their ass cheeksin two seconds flat! Whereare they?!”
“No, don’t,” Makoto said quietly, “Let them be, they’ll gettheir own soon enough,”
Grumblingand cussing, Majima still scanned the beach for them, locating themnot too far away causing havoc in their own little circle.Disgruntled, he slouched asMakoto started petting sand off of other areas.
“GuessI wasn’t so different, back then,” he muttered. Makoto chuckled.
“I bet you were a terror,”
“Were?”he pinched her cheek and she playfully swatted him away.
Hehelped Makoto brush the rest of the sand off, slowly building hismood back as they idly chatted about the more innocent parts of theirpast that weren’t too dark for whatever ears could be listening.All the while, though,Majima kept his one eye constantly glancing back to the rowdy youth.Makoto noticed, but didn’tsay anything until she tapped his arm.
“Goro,that family—,”
“Yeah,”he confirmed, low. The youths had started picking at a grandmotherand her two young grandchildren, harassing and kicking apart whatevercastles the youngest was trying to build. Anyprotest was met with the reasoning that they were simply playingGojira despiteabsolutely no invitation. Majimasnarled, snatched hissunglasses back up, and gotto his feet, “Fuck that! If nobody’s gonna give ‘em their ownthen I will!”
Makotodidn’t stop him.
“Oi!One bad turn deservesanother, you punks want sand kicked in yer face?!” Majima toweredover them but they were too drunk on their own might to care.
“Huh? You got a problem, old man?” one challenged, swinging astill-full bottle of booze. The others all turned towards him, whichwas good, since it gave the grandmother a chance to pull her kidsaway from the tension.
Majima grit his teeth, wanting so very badly to escalate farther—hecould pull all the real insults from every orifice and make them crybefore he beat their faces to the dunes. But the round and scaredfaces of the grandkids behind the punks forced him to reel it in andhe swallowed. Summoning a state of mind he hadn’t had to use in avery long time, he adopted the patience of a cabaret manager.
“Listen,guys, if yer gonna cause trouble, do it somewhere else, yer ruinin’some kids’ day fer nothin’, a’ight?”
“What’samatter, can’t take a little excitement in your life?” one of theskinnier ones prodded.
Thecomment roused a chorus of nasty chuckles with compliments to thechef of such a lame insult. Majima narrowed his eye, thinking of allthe many, many, manythings he had done inthe past several years of his life just for the fuck of it only tocome out of them (surprisingly) alive—not that Makoto had to knowhalf of them, but regardless. It popped a smirk on his face.
“What’re you laughin’ at, huh?” the booze-swinger steamed. Atfirst his friends laughed but then they shied away when he, angerclearly triggered, stormed up to Majima, “Somethin’ funny toyou?!”
“Actually, I feel like cryin’,” Majima supplied calmly, “Y’allare just so sad to look at.”
“Youtryin’ to start a fight?!”
“On this beach?” Majima feigned innocence, “I would never. So,listen to yer elder and haul ass outta here if yer feelin’ likethrowin’ down,”
“Idon’t have to listen to anyone!” the youth raged, swinging thebottle wildly.
“F-Furukawa, hey, maybe—,”
“Shutit!!” Furukawacommanded, causing the only dissenting youth to flinch. Majimasniffed.
“Yer friend’s got the right idea. Blow yer steam off somewhereelse, kid.”
“Youcan’t tell me what to do, old man!!”Furukawa roared, swinging the bottle down hard. Caught off guard byhow quickly the kid snapped, Majima grunted as the bottle shatteredover his head, scraping his brow and knocking his glasses off. Hestared at where the sunglasses landed in the sand nextto the bottle’s shards,sake dripping from his harsh features. For a moment he almost wishedit was champagne again, if only because that smelled better. Raisinga calloused thumb to wipe his upper lip, he inhaled, loosening hisshoulders on the exhale. The sake soaked into his white shirt andMajima looked up.
Theeyes of everyone in front of him, from the youths to the grandmotherbehind them, widened until the whites shone in the sun. Majimadidn’t have to look down to know that his tattoo bled through thewet fabric, having hemmed and hawed over it with Makoto some hoursprior.
“C’mon,kid,” Majima said, low and dark and edging on dangerous, “Whatare ya, 21? 20?”
Theyouths huddled together behind Furukawa who was too frozen to cower.The more his tattoo bled through the more anxious they became.
“Ain’tya a little old to be pullin’ thisshit?”
Furukawa’sjaw hung open, staggered, then shut.
“Ifya don’t want a little excitement in your life…,” Majima woundhis leg back and kicked sand at the youths, “Fuckin’beat it!”
They scrambled over each other, tripping and faltering in their hasteto leave the scrutiny of the unveiled yakuza. Majima would’vewatched them go, but the faces of the family in front of him stolehis attention. What must he have looked like? Hiding a tattoo wasterror for the grandma, but for the kids? They couldn’t stopstaring at the hole in his face. Frozen and awkward, he gulped andgave a little bow, earning a flinch from the grandmother. Shit.
“Goro!” Makoto called. Turning on his heel to see herrunning, Majima called back.
“Wait, don’t, don’t! There’s—,”
An ear-splitting shriek left Majima’s throat as he stepped on theshards of glass he was trying to warn her about. Hopping erraticallyon one foot, he attempted to go in her direction. Makoto braced hisshoulders when she reached him, guiding him back to their towel asgracefully as they could manage.
“Shit,” Majima expunged as he collapsed on the towel, “I’dalmost rather get another foot massage from ya,”
“Don’t tempt me,” Makoto said as she pulled his bleeding footonto her lap. Majima groaned, covering his face as she went to workcleaning the wound.
“Makoto?”
“Hm?”
Majima’s voice was defeated like a kid that had lost thechampionship little league game, “Where’s my eyepatch?”
In turn, her voice was gentler than normal, taking time to brush athumb along his shin, “Front pocket of the bag.
“’Kay…,” he mumbled. Keeping one hand covering his face, heblindly pawed around until he found the front pocket. Pulling thepatch out, he sullenly put it back on, wincing whenever Makoto hit aparticularly sensitive spot.
“Call me unprepared…,” She frowned, “But I didn’t bringanything to bandage you up…,”
“Naw,” he dismissed, “I can’t blame ya. This wasn’tsupposed to happen,”
A pause. Makoto rinsed her hands with the rest of the water.
“I’m sorry, Makoto,”
“Don’t be,” she assured quietly, “You did the right thing.”
Majima sighed, then started unbuttoning his shirt. Makoto eyed himwarily.
“You sure?” she asked. He sighed again.
“Cat’s already outta the bag. Plus it’s soaked with booze.Can’t hurt.”
Makoto didn’t argue and simply wrapped the shirt until his foot wasnothing but a bulk of soaked fabric. He seethed, somehow managing tokeep his ticklish foot in place for her. Makoto finally sat back,sighing with him.
“Well.”
“Well.”
She reached up and ran her hand up his arm, soothing with her firmgrip. Majima, his arm over his eye, started mouthing off a countdownas Makoto kept massaging him.
“You there! Sir!” an authoritative but painfully local voicecalled.
“Aaaand right on time,” he grumbled as the policeman jogged up.
Already intimidated by his appearance the policeman was trying coverup any stammering by standing straight. Majima only gave himattention by moving his arm so his eye could peek out.
“S-Sir, this is...This is a public beach,”
“Haw?”
“A family beach,”
“Uh-huh.”
“Tattoos aren’t allowed,”
“Ya.”
The policeman shifted, becoming as annoyed as he was nervous. Majimasqueezed whatever enjoyment he could by watching him struggle.
“Please lea—,”
“Wait, Officer,” an old and sweet voice interrupted. Majimajolted, looking up in utter bewilderment with Makoto. There stood thegrandmother, granddaughter in one hand and grandson in the other.
“Let him stay here for the day,”
“Sorry, ma’am,” the officer shook his head, “But I was toldthat this man assaulted several youths just now, I can’t allow suchbehavior here.”
The grandmother shook her head, her floppy sunhat following hermovements, “They were lying. This man took it upon himself tointervene and chase those ruffians away. They caused the violencefirst,” she gestured at his foot and brow, “Just look at whatthey did to him!”
“Self-defense?” the officer guessed. The grandmother narrowed hereyes, her voice turning into a harsh scold like he should’ve knownbetter. The officer winced, confused.
“No, those boys attacked first. I’m just thankful he washere to stop them,”
The policeman stammered, trying to bolster his defense. Rules arerules, so on and so forth. But the grandmother wouldn’t budge,resorting to shouting until the officer relented and allowed Majimaon the beach for that day only.
“Oh…,” Makoto said when the officer finally left them alone,“Thank you, really, thank you!”
“Granny,” Majima propped himself on his elbows, “Ya reallydidn’t have to, we can take a little beatin’ here and there,”
“And?” The grandmother turned her scolding to Majima in aninstant, much to Makoto’s giggling, “It’s a beautiful summerday and you deserve a good rest. Come now.”
The grandmother allowed the two of them to entertain her twingrandchildren, Makoto walking the boy into the shallows and pluckingsea shells with him while Majima (injured as he was) stayed on thebeach while the girl dug in the sand. Majima’s leering hannyaglared out at all the rest of the families, but the grandmother wasnever far away to sit and smile, diminishing the fierceness of thetattoo.
“Hohh? Whatchu got there, scamp?” he asked as the girl flinchedbut started poking curiously around a moat she had built. The girlwas much quieter than her twin brother, and simply looked at Majimabefore pointing down. He craned his neck, seeing a small crabscuttling about.
“Ohh yah, got some creatures in yer moat to guard it, huh? Nothin’to sneeze at either. Look,” he reached down and picked the tinything up, “See these claws?”
The girl nodded. Majima grinned, then stuck his finger square in thecrab’s claw to be pinched.
Gasping, the girl brought her sand-covered hands to her mouth. Majimacringed, biting his lip so as not to cuss—the little sucker pinchedfar harder than he had imagined. But still he stuck it out and kepthis wonky smile on for the girl.
“Goro!” Makoto called from the water, “What are youdoing?”
“Important stuff! You ain’t invited!”
“Would you stop hurting yourself at least?”
“Hurtin’? Ow—,” Majima flinched as the crab’s other clawfound the flesh of his palm, “This ain’t hurtin’, it’splaying, there’s a difference!”
The girl giggled. Makoto rolled her eyes so forcefully he could seeit from where he was sitting, and he started to giggle too as the sunbeat warmly on his back.
Part 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It took two weeks of denial before you saved his phone number and two weeks more of staring at it at least ten times a day before you got the nerve to even consider texting him back. The process of actually sending that text took at least a month and a half because you knew once you did… you were opening Pandora’s box.
‘Hi… so I guess I’m your soul…’ *delete*
‘So we’re soulmates… I guess.’ *delete*
‘I’m sorry to break it to you but I can’t…’ *delete*
‘I don’t know what you want from me…’ *delete*
‘I don’t think I can handle being in the spotlight…’ *delete*
‘Hi…’ *Send*
You sat nervously in your spot on the couch in your living room, staring at the iMessage screen on your laptop, regretting hitting send severely. It was only a few moments before the three dots of doom appeared in the bottom left hand corner.
‘Hi, sweetheart. How are you today?’
You couldn’t stop the small smile that pulled at the corner of your lips as you moved your hands from where you were clutching them together under your chin and set them lightly on your laptop as if it were going to burn you for doing so.
‘Scared.’
You responded truthfully. Your head reeled as you tried to come up with just what you wanted to say but the three dots appeared once more before you could.
‘That’s perfectly understandable, (Y/N). It’s an intimidating situation.’
You nodded in agreement as you curled your hands under your chin again and bit your lip while the dots continued.
‘How about we take this slow because trust me, I have just as much anxiety about this as you do.’
You huffed a humorless laugh and shook your head as you wrote your response.
‘I doubt that. Did you stay curled up in your bed for three day watching reruns of Sex and the City?’
The moment you hit send, you wanted to melt into a hole at what you just confessed to Sebastian freaking Stan.
‘You got me there.’
‘But I did eat a whole pizza in like an hour if that helps at all.’
You smiled fully and nodded.
‘It does. I turn to Ben and Jerry’s myself.’
‘What’s your go-to flavor?’
You bit you started to actually chew on your lip as you glanced over your computer screen to think for a moment.
‘B&J would be Half Baked but hands down, cookie dough is my favorite.’
‘Cookie dough!!!!! I love cookie dough! But my B&J flavor would be Chunky Monkey. It’s addictive.’
You giggled as you quickly looked up the unfamiliar to you flavor and scrunched your nose at the ingredients listing.
‘Eww walnuts! I can do everything else about that but the walnuts.’
There was a few moments of hesitation before the dots appeared again.
‘I could totally insert a ‘nuts’ joke right now but I’ll refrain out of respect. LOL.’
You giggled at your screen and choose to let your inappropriate side stay hidden for now.
‘I’ll let it slide. But trust me when I say I’m far from appropriate usually. My mom gets on me about it all the time. Especially the amount of times I say ‘fuck’ in a single sentence. I make Negan from Walking Dead look like an alter boy with my mouth.’
Once you hit send, you closed your eyes and groaned.
‘Well it is a very versatile word. I’m a big fan of it’s many forms.’
He responded and you could almost see his smirk in your mind. You couldn’t help yourself with your response.
‘Oh, I bet you do! LMAO’
‘But you’re not alone there, hun.’
‘There it is! Hahaha! Ahhh, I love it!’
You smiled and crossed your legs under your laptop on the couch as the three dots appeared once more.
‘Hey, I’m really, really sorry to cut this short but I have a thing here in a few minutes so I have to go.’
Your smile instantly dropped.
‘Oh! Right, famous actor. Right.’
His response was instantaneous.
‘Hey, I don’t want you to think of me like that, sweetheart. You’ll overwhelm yourself. I’m just a regular guy that has the same fears, anxiety, and hesitation about this situation as you do. Finding your soulmate is a huge, life changing step. But at the end of the day, no matter how much I want this, you still have the option to walk away. I hope you don’t. I really, really hope you give this a chance. But if you look at this with me being famous, I have a gut feeling that you’ll pull away from me before you give us a chance. And I know it’s hard to wrap your head around being in the spot light with anxiety. It’s hard to do anything with anxiety and I get that. But try to stay calm for me, OK? Please, (Y/N)?’
You read through his message twice before nodding your head slowly.
‘OK.’
‘OK. If it’s OK with you, I’m gunna text you later tonight when I get done with my thing. Sound good?’
You nodded again as if he could see you as you wrote out your response.
‘That’s fine. I’ll do my best not to psych myself out too much.’
‘That’s all I can ask from you, sweetheart. I’ll talk to you later.’
You waited a few minutes, staring at your computer screen before looking up at your front door when your mom walked in.
“I texted him.” You said simply as she set her bag down by the front door.
“Good for you.” She responded with a smile as she flopped down on her couch with a sigh after a long day at work. “I’m proud of you for taking that step.” You nodded in agreement as you looked back at your laptop screen and scrolled to the tops of the messages to read them over once more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You know, you’re the luckiest girl in the world.” Your Tumblr friend, Christine said on a Face Time call the next morning. “I’d kill to have a soulmate with that body. I’m just stuck with JP… Oi! Don’t hit!” She said as her fiancé hit her in the back of the head with a pillow.
“It’s just weird.” You said as you glanced over at the horror movie you had on as background noise. “Like, of all the fucking people in the whole world, a freaking actor is my soul mate.” You looked back at her with a shrug. “Like really? I feel like the most unlucky person in history here.”
“Bullshit.” She snapped back. “How are you unlucky?”
“Christine, it’s me! I’m awkward and loud and I say inappropriate shit all the time. How the fucking fuck am I supposed to date an actor, huh? I’d embarrass him right off the edge of the map!”
“Don’t be a dick. He obviously is fuckin’ in to ya if he’s taking time out of his busy schedule ta see how you are. So put your big girl pants on and accept that the famous actor is your soulmate, you lucky cunt and let him get to know you!” A smile pulled at the corner of your lips as you looked away from the screen.
“I’m lucky as fuck, aren’t I?” You asked as you looked back at her.
“Hell yea you are! So don’t go fuckin’ ruinin’ it by runnin’ around in your head so I can live vicariously through you.”
“Alright, alright!” You conceded. “Sorry UK hubby. I’m divorcing you!” You called out teasingly at JP.
“I want half your shite!” He yelled back causing you and your friend to laugh.
“OK, so now what?” You asked as you made yourself comfortable in your spot and muted the woman screaming on your TV. “What do I do now?”
“Well he said last night ta text him when you got up, right?”
“Yea…”
“Well you’ve been up least an hour since ye actually have clothes on…”
“Shut up.” You laughed but she continued over you.
“So text him. Stay casual…”
“And say what?”
“Say ‘hi’, ya bell end!”
“You’re a horrible friend, do you know that?” You joked.
“I know.” She said with a shrug as she picked up her long haired Jack Russel terrier, Ollie and held him up beside her face. “Do it for Ollie.”
Tumblr media
“Rude.” You replied flatly as you waved at her. “Alright, I’ll call you later.” She waved back and said bye as you hung up the video call. You groaned to yourself and leaned back against the back of your seat as you scrubbed the heels of your palms from your hairline down to your chin. “Alright, fine.” You said aloud to your own dogs as you pulled up your iMessage app. “I’ll text him.”
‘Morning’
As you waited for his response, you turned the volume of your movie back on. You watched for a few moments before your laptop ‘dinged’.
‘It’s almost 11. If you are just waking up, I am royally jealous. I’ve been up and at the gym since 5am.’
‘Oh, hell no! I protest for you. The only exercise I do is walking my dogs around the neighborhood and whatever exercise I get at work walking clients up and down hallways.’
You turned down the volume of your laptop so it wouldn’t be annoyingly loud as the three dots popped up again.
‘1) what kind of dogs? And 2) what kinda work?’
You smiled as you grabbed your cell phone off the pillow beside you and pulled up your photos with a smile. You quickly found your favorite photo of your pups sent it to him before going back to type on your laptop.
Tumblr media
‘Lucy is the white one. She’s a soft coated Wheaton terrier. Skye is the black one Lucy is sitting on. She’s a rescue so we don’t know exactly what she is but we say she’s a Havanese because that’s what she looks like.’
‘And I’m a CNA which is basically an under appreciated, under paid babysitter for the elderly. I work about thirty hours a week right now. Helps my mom pays bills as best as I can.’
‘OMG those are the cutest damn dogs in the entire world! I’m jealous. I miss being able to have a dog but I travel too much. And good for you on the job. I bet it’s tough to work with the elderly and not get the appreciation other nurses get.’
You nodded in agreement as you responded.
‘It takes a special kinda person to do my job. I hate it so much usually. But when I’m almost at the point where I want to throw my hands up and quit, a client or a family member makes it worth my while again.’
‘Well I’m proud of you, sweetheart. Even if no one else is. I am.’
You smirked at your screen as you took a sip of your coffee and set it down on the table beside you.
‘You have to be. You’re my soulmate, remember?’
‘Hey! I’m trying to be supportive here. You’re killin’ me, Smalls.’
You let out a barked laugh as you found the gif you had saved in a file for Tumblr.
Tumblr media
‘For-ev-er.’
You smiled proudly at yourself as Seb responded.
‘I’m crying tears of joy that you got that reference. I’ve said it before and people just looked at me like I was more crazy than I actually am.’
‘I have classic tastes, IDK what to say. I can’t tell you how many times I have referenced ‘classic’ movies on Tumblr for it to just go right over half my followers heads. Like what is this from?’
You pulled up your file of ‘Pics & Gifs’ and scrolled through to find the one you wanted.
Tumblr media
‘Well that one’s just too easy. The Big Lebowski, obviously.’
‘Yea for us old folks. Bet your ass 75% of the population under 25 have no idea what movie that’s from.’
‘Well now that’s just… that’s just sad.’
You nodded in agreement and sighed.
‘You have no freaking idea.’
It took a few minutes for him to respond again and you almost forgot you were texting him when he sent you another gif.
‘Name the film.’
Tumblr media
You scoffed loudly and shook your head.
‘Really? You’re gunna try to trip me up on a Tarantino flick? He’s one of my faves and that’s ‘Four Rooms’. Try again, Seb.’
The two of you went back and forth for nearly three hours sending the most obscure movie gifs you could find; everything from ‘Airplane’ to ‘BASEketball’. Most of them you had both seen but there where a couple that either you or he hadn’t and Seb said he was starting a lit of movies you both needed to see eventually. Before you knew it, your mom was getting home for her between cases nap and your head whipped up toward the clock.
“Damn, is it really three?” She nodded as your laptop ‘dinged’ with another text.
“Hi Christine.” She said as she set her purse down on the coffee table on her way out to the back porch for a smoke.
“Not Christine.” You responded as you guessed ‘Office Space’ correctly. She stopped by the sliding glass door with her eye brows arched.
“Sebastian?” You smirked and nodded as you sent a gif from ‘Wet Hot American Summer’. “Good for you. I’m proud of you.”
“Stop.” You laughed as you mentally cheered for your soulmate for getting the right answer. “I’m just making a new friend right now. Don’t go ordering wedding invitations.” You looked over at her as she held her hands up in surrender.
“Didn’t say anything.” She claimed on her way out back. “Just glad you’re making friends again.” You grumbled at her to shut up under your breath as you pulled up yet another gif and sent it off to him.
