STRANGER KID - Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Robbie Huntington looking strangely cool as he checks out things at the first Midwest Conference on the Unknown held in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Robbie is no stranger to weird subjects as he has traveled to dozens of phenomenological locations around the country and attended several UFO, Cryptid and Paranormal Conferences over the years. At the 2022 MCU event, Robbie manned a busy vendor table where he produced artwork and conducted card readings. Impressive. HAUNTED “INDIAN PRINCESS” GRAVE ON THE TRAIL OF TEARS - Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The allegedly haunted grave of Nancy Bushyhead Walker Hildebrand (1812-1839) - who died in the winter crossing of the nearby Mississippi River during the forced westward relocation of the Cherokee People by the US government in 1839 known as the infamous “Trail of Tears”. Not an actual Indian Princess, she is still respectfully referred to traditionally as “Princess Otahki” by locals. Paranormal activity is alleged in this area, including: unknown crying, bizarre sounds, strange howling, campfire aromas, phantom mists and anomalous orbs. THE CAPE GIRARDEAU FLYING SAUCER CRASH OF 1941 - Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The April 12, 1941 Cape Girardeau crash/retrieval story (the reported crash actually having occurred most nearest to Chaffee and Rockview, Missouri) mirrors other similar "alien visitation" stories that have surfaced over the decades (such as Roswell), but predates them. Alleged accounts from locals and military personnel relate the classic saucer crash tale: a metallic disc-shaped craft crash-lands in a rural farm field, the strange object/debris (and deceased "beings" - usually typical "grey aliens") are discovered and authorities are alerted, the military cordons the site and threatens local witnesses, the crash site is scoured clean of any evidence, the debris and bodies are shipped out from the nearest base to a secret military facility (usually Wright-Patterson AFB), a subsequent cover-up/denial ensues which persists for decades, and the murky incident fades across time and becomes an urban/folk legend in UFO lore and the popular culture. The Cape Girardeau Saucer Crash story originated with Charlette Mann, who in the 80s, began to recount her family's twice-told tale to UFO researchers. According to Mann, her grandfather, the Reverend William Huffman of the Red Star Baptist Church, was called one night (believed to be April 12, 1941) to provide religious comfort at what was initially thought to be an airplane crash. Driving with local authorities to a rural location outside of Cape Girardeau, near the town of Rockview, the Reverend arrived at the burning crash of a flying saucer with three alien beings. The Army soon arrived and began to cover up what may have been the first crash of an alien craft from Another World. Others have since come forward to give their accounts of the tale: confirming that "something" crashed in 1941 and that, perhaps, the Reverend was not alone in believing that "We Are Not Alone." THE HAUNTED PORT CAPE GIRARDEAU - Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Located in downtown Cape Girardeau on the Mississippi Riverfront, the Port Cape Girardeau Restaurant and Lounge is an historic piece of architecture with many interesting stories and, reportedly, a few ghosts. Built sometime prior to the 1830s, this building has been utilized as a warehouse and a legitimate river shipping/exchange facility. It is one of the oldest buildings west of the Mississippi. During the Civil War Era, Port Cape served as a Union Army headquarters - at one time it was even used by General Ulysses S. Grant. Port Cape opened as a restaurant back in the 1970s. Typical paranormal activity has been reported throughout the decades since: strange sounds, unknown footsteps, self-moving objects, orbs and mists, lights turning off/on inexplicably (that third floor light in the photo, btw, should probably not be on!), poltergeist mischief, etc. - with much of the activity allegedly happening on the second and third floors. The really intriguing paranormal accounts, however, are claims of spectral encounters with actual full-bodied apparitions that have appeared in the forms of phantasmal Union Officers and a ghostly gown-clad woman referred to as “Belle.” There have even been the occasional alleged sighting of General Grant himself! Port Cape Girardeau is a fantastic venue for food, refreshments, entertainment, ice cream, and fun. But it also just might be a great place to spot a ghost. Keep your eye on that third floor window if find yourself downtown at night - you just might catch a glance of some remaining ethereal echo from this place’s long-lost past! UNION FORT D - Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Atop a hill overlooking the southern part of Cape Girardeau, sits the preserved Civil War-era Union Fort "D" (1861). Commanded by Lieutenant John W. Powell of Illinois (Battery F, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery), this was one of 4 Union cannon forts that guarded the Mississippi River during the war and defended the town in the "Battle of Cape Girardeau" in April of 1863. We like to visit here occasionally to see if we can experience anything of a paranormal sort. So far, no bites. They do hold awesome uniformed reenactment demonstrations here once in awhile, though, for those seeking their period high fix. CAPE’S HAUNTED THEATRE - Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The reputedly haunted Rose Theatre (built in 1966) on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Constructed on the grounds of a former French Plantation, the Rose Theatre is believed inhabited by a ghost named "Mary" and a number of spirited patrons of the arts. Apparitions, orbs, mysterious blood stains, moving objects, voices, and ghostly touches by invisible entities have been reported. During my days as a student here, my drama student friends would tell me some stories of the weird things that happen here, late at night, after the tear-down of sets. Noises and things moving. Shadows. I have also seen - for myself - the reported “blood stain” on the ground which reappears despite painting and scrubbing - remanifesting brightest on the supposed anniversary date of when it was spilled. Theater nerds playing pranks? Maybe. Or...maybe not. THE HAUNTED CHENEY HALL AT SOUTHEAST - Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Haunted Cheney Hall (built in 1939) on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Local tales tell of the ghost of a female student who supposedly committed suicide in a third floor bathtub who is doomed to haunt this residence hall. No one knows her name or if the story has a basis in fact. Apparitions, orbs, moving objects, and doors being shut by an invisible force have been alleged by students and advisors as far back as the 1970s. This hall has traditionally been a residence for international students. I wonder if they are told about this ghost story and how do they react? (I also wonder: is this ghost naked?)
