The reason Arthur is "special" and has been able to survive having John in his head is that John/the King in Yellow is Arthur Lester, from another dimension (or possibly the future?), who got embroiled in Spooky Shit, gained eldrich powers, lost his memories over the long eons as the King, and has now found his way back to himself the only way he could.

Barry’d gotten covered in tiny shards of glass. The velocity of his spins sent the shards flying, and Hal caught them in his construct like flys on flypaper. Once Barry stopped, he turned the construct into a circle and compresses the glass into a tiny lightning bolt, a replica of the symbol on Barry’s suit. Barry grins when he sees it. “Cute.” Hal drops it into his hand. It sparkles faintly in the dim light of the alley.  “Wally and Linda are having a few people over for dinner tonight,” Barry says, still staring at the glass figurine. Maybe Hal could drill a tiny hole in the top, and Barry could hang it in his apartment somewhere. “Called a babysitter and everything. You’re welcome to come. I know they’d love to see you.” Hal would love to see them. He couldn’t remember the last time he had a home cooked meal that wasn’t Kilowog’s [FIND OUT WHAT HE COOKS]. It was temping.  “Sorry, man.
