The Ancient But New Tradition Of Wedding ‘First Footing’!

The first wedding of this 2019 Spring Bank Holiday weekend took place in the woods at TeyBrook Orchard in Gt Tey...A totally fabulous secluded spot, full of glamping pods, an awesome woodland and a great entertaining space!

Anyway, I digress from the real reason for this blog...

So if you're from the British Isles you must surely have heard of the ancient Scottish tradition of first footing...No....REALLY??

OK so a very quick lesson from a sassenach...

It is, and was a way of welcoming in the New Year, wishing good luck upon a household. Presents, of whisky and shortbread were offered to the first person to set foot into the house, shortly after the stroke of midnight, usually a dark-haired man carrying a lump of coal.

So...bearing this in mind, when it came to devising something a little different for Ally & Maddy’s wedding in the woods yesterday, I hit upon the idea of really acknowledging his proud Scottish roots and creating a new wedding tradition at the same time!

After all...something old, something new, something borrowed...it does fit in really rather well here.

Before us on the table we have, some silver coins, salt, shortbread and a lump of coal ( the rings, quaich and handfasting cords come into their own later..)

And with these words their ceremony commenced...

‘Let’s start with a coin exchange, may you never know poverty in your marriage. And then a dab of salt on your tongues.Salt is used to flavour food, but it can also be a representation of bitterness… remember this bitter taste, may any discord be short lived and replaced with the sweetness of communication and union…Just as the sweet shortbread replaces the bitterness of the salt….

Lastly Ally please present Maddy with the coal. Such a small gesture, but we all know coal represents warmth. Maddy, please see this presentation as a promise that the home you share will be always be warm, open and welcoming…

And… we saved the wee dram ( just to be different, it was G&T and not whisky) for just a wee while longer…

Their gorgeous little girl Niamh, stole the show though, presenting mummy and daddy with some gypsophila from the aisle and emptying the confetti onto the floor, she really was a little poppet and I cant wait to see the photos of the ceremony soon..(Chloe Lee photography...no pressure hun!)

They created a gorgeous space in the woods and their willow arch set it all off perfectly.

A lovely love story, full of hopes and dreams, interspersed with audience participation and the surprise unveiling of all the things they love most about each other( and their one pet niggle), before moving onto the handfasting. Niamh joined us as we bound all three of their hearts and souls together ( along with Buttons the bear too, he didn't want to be left out!)

Ally and Maddy rounded off the ceremony with a wee dram from their very own loving cup...

It was a beautiful day, the sun shone and laughter abounded, and their family and close friends joined in with justo, blowing our happy couple a kiss and wishing them well on their journey. Apparently this sassenach taught the Scots something new in relation to the first footing tradition...always a bonus...gotta love a good Google (other search engines are available) search!

And for the astute amongst you, you may think that first footing sounds very familiar and similar to the Polish, bread and vodka ceremony...it REALLY is!! There are so many similarities!

It just goes to show we are all similar in our habits and celebrations, no matter where in the world we live!
