hockey writing appreciation club part iii (part i here, part ii here) hi everyone!! you know what time it is! i've collected another handful (and then some) articles i've really enjoyed over the past few weeks! support good writing, support good sports journalism — with clicks and with subscriptions if that's in your ability/inclination! hope you enjoy some of these; my particular favorites in this batch are the pius suter piece and the coyotes story. as always, i welcome recommendations if you have them!!
remember that a "🔒" implies a paywalled article, but this is often easily worked around by entering your browser's "reader mode"!
NHL graybeards still find ways to make major impact In most any other field, Pavelski, at 39, would be viewed as someone who has much of his career ahead of him. If he were named CEO of a company, he'd be on a "40 under 40" list or might be talked about as the next great innovator. But when it comes to hockey and other pro sports? There's a belief that being 30 -- let alone 35 or 40 -- and still productive is something just short of a miracle. And for the record, Pavelski said he has not found a gray hair.
The Cyclist: Pius Suter’s clinching goal and the secret behind Canucks’ success 🔒 Although Suter still drives to games, he goes about town mostly on his bicycle. Most days, he cycles into practice on a racing bike with narrow tires; he did so even during massive February snow storms, to the amusement of his teammates, support staff and management. “It’s Canada,” Suter said, “you’d think they’d clear the roads! At least, I did. “Honestly, it feels like home. I played in Zurich, biked always to practice and games and I love not having to use the car.”
Marie-Philip Poulin and the PWHL have yet another landmark moment: ‘It’s a movement’ 🔒 But the building was still mostly empty, and still, for Marie-Philip Poulin, a living legend, this was a lot to take in. She skated over to the bench for an interview with the arena hostess that would go live in the building, and the first question was about how she felt in this moment, in this environment, on this stage, about to play a professional hockey game in her native Quebec in front of this many people. In front of this many of her people.
What really happens during NHL intermissions? The naked truth 🔒 When the clock strikes zero at the end of each period, we watch the teams filter off the ice, down a tunnel and into their respective locker rooms. But what’s really going on back there while we hit the restroom, maybe grab a $14 beer and $7.50 hot dog?
Inside the Coyotes' stunning move from Arizona to Utah In April, Smith posted to X asking fans for team name suggestions should the NHL ever come to Utah. That was a huge tell to the hockey world: This was happening. But back in Arizona, players and coaches were still in the dark. For all they knew, there was a plan in motion that would keep them in Phoenix. What they didn't know was how little faith the NHL had in it being executed by this ownership group, and how badly it wanted the Coyotes out of Mullett Arena.
What makes Macklin Celebrini the next big thing in hockey On a Saturday night in January 2023, the Golden State Warriors had an off night in Chicago. Draymond Green didn't want to go to dinner or out on the town. He had another idea: going to the suburbs to watch junior hockey. "How often do you get an opportunity to see Sidney Crosby at 17?" Green reasoned. The next big thing in hockey is Macklin Celebrini, the unanimous No. 1 prospect of the 2024 NHL draft class. Celebrini is also the son of Rick Celebrini, the Warriors vice president of player health and performance.
Pursuit of perfection drives Kucherov's intense summer training If you walk through the sliding glass doors and into the lobby of TGH Ice Plex on a weekday morning, it's quiet. You may find a staff member answering a call at the front desk or spot an employee from the pro shop carrying cardboard boxes filled with equipment. That's about it. But if you walk to the right and peek out to the south rink, you'll probably find Nikita Kucherov.
How use of analytics is part of Colorado Avalanche’s secret sauce: “Numbers are unemotional” One of the key aspects of how Bednar and his staff help the players connect with and absorb the data is not the numbers themselves. Most players aren’t going to care if tonight’s opponent is creating X shots in the slot area on the power play per game, or Y shots from the right faceoff circle. But tell them a team is fourth in the league in one category or 30th in another — and then supplement it with video clips — and the information hits home.
What are NHL series supervisors? How unseen officials help teams, league coordinate during playoffs 🔒 The supervisors travel as the series shifts cities. They are there whenever the clubs need to meet. The other important part of their job is meeting with referees and linesmen, who rotate from series to series. Supervisors fill them in on what’s been happening in the series — what the temperature of it is, the issues each club has raised in meetings, etc. That gives the refs a sense going in of what to look for that night in the game.
Connor Bedard's first season has lived up to expectations When the 18-year-old's jaw broke, everything he had been building for was cruelly interrupted. "It's not fun not to play," Bedard said. "I was dying to get back." One week after surgery to repair his fractured jaw, Bedard convinced trainers to allow him to skate. Solid foods were out, so he drank as many soups, smoothies and supplements as his body would allow, desperate not to lose weight.

Martin Freeman Says Backlash Over Age Gap in Ortega Movie Wasn't Fair
Eve Crosbie Apr 27, 2024, 8:36 AM ET
Lionsgate
Martin Freeman addressed the controversy around his latest film, "Miller's Girl."
Freeman, 52, plays a teacher who has a relationship with his student, played by 21-year-old Ortega.
He said the movie isn't endorsing age gap romances any more than Holocaust movies endorse genocide.
Martin Freeman addressed the controversy caused by his latest film, "Miller's Girl," in which he stars opposite Jenna Ortega, who is 31 years younger than him.
The movie, which landed on Netflix on April 25, follows a high school student, played by Ortega, who begins a sexual relationship with her English teacher, played by Freeman.
Audiences were quick to criticize the film due to the age gap between the two actors — Ortega is 21, while Freeman is 52. Some said the film romanticizes the relationship between minors and those in positions of power.
Speaking with The Times of London for an interview published Saturday, Freeman defended "Miller's Girl" as "grown-up and nuanced."
"It's not saying, 'Isn't this great,'" he said of the film's dynamic between his character and Ortega's.
Freeman said the film had been "tainted by association" with a difficult subject.
He said that derision wasn't distributed equally, though — saying that people seemed to understand the level of distance involved in stories depicting Nazism.
"Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?" he asked, referring to Neeson's starring role in Steven Spielberg's 1993 film "Schindler's List."

Although the controversial relationship at the center of "Miller's Girls" prompted a lot of comment, the film wasn't a hit.
It premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival to underwhelming box office numbers.
The R-rated film was given a small theatrical release in the US, showing at just 350 screens for just one week domestically, earning $321,000 in ticket sales, according to box office tracker The Numbers.
It took an additional $568,522 at the international box office, bringing its total gross to $889,522 — less than a quarter of its $4 million production budget.
On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned a critic score of 29% based on 58 reviews. Its audience score is 42% based on 50-plus verified ratings.
This could, of course, change now that "Miller's Girl" has been on one of the most popular streaming platforms."
(Disclosure: Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Business Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member.)
Dear GOD. Did he just... Martin, I know you're not this stupid, so seeing you being put up to behave like this, is just...gross. Your co-star had just come off of an Antisemitic publicity stunt with Tom Cruise, she's a one note actress, and we all know how films that are supposed to be cautionary tales, usually get turned into the opposite. Wall Street kicked off the age of Greed. The Fight Club inspired real underground fight clubs. If a film is not clear about its moral stance, then it WILL be misinterpreted. I don't know what's going on with you, but I'm going to pray for you, Martin. You need it. Especially working for Lionsgate.

5 minute read
It had been a long road to labour for Nicole* when she walked into a south-east London hospital to be induced on 30 March, 2021. After struggling with infertility for years, she agreed to be induced at 41 weeks of pregnancy. On the ward, a midwife Nicole had never met was assigned to take care of her.
“I had two exchanges with her, where I felt not listened to and unvalidated,” the 36-year-old tells i. “[In the first] I asked for an epidural, was told I had not progressed far enough, and was offered paracetamol and gas and air. I didn’t react well to the gas and air and was told I was doing it wrong, which I wasn’t.
“The second [exchange with her] was when my waters broke. I noticed straight away the waters were tinged with meconium [faecal matter from the foetus, which can be a sign of foetal distress]. The midwife came in and dismissed it, saying it was just my mucus plug. Turns out, it was meconium.”
Soon after, the same midwife did an examination to check the placement of Nicole’s induction pessary. In her birth plan, Nicole had consented to vaginal examinations, but when the midwife started the examination, pain ripped through Nicole’s body “like a knife”, she says. “My immediate reaction was to say ‘No, no, no, please stop’. And she wouldn’t stop. Then I said, ‘I withdraw my consent,’ and she said it would just be a few more seconds. She continued to examine me.”
During the 15-second examination, the midwife realised there was meconium present, an issue already raised by Nicole. After the birth, Nicole’s baby had to be kept in neo-natal intensive care unit for weeks to be treated for meconium aspiration while Nicole tried to put her distress behind her. “I just pushed down my experience with that exam.”
Once Nicole was back home with her baby, she was visited by a midwife who listened to her experience. “She said that [examination] could have been assault,” Nicole says. “It took me aback. I hadn’t put that label on it.” She then saw a therapist, and realised that the short exam had caused her post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She is now fearful of smear tests, anxious in hospitals, and petrified about the prospect of another baby. “It was the moment in my birth where I felt I had absolutely no control,” she says. “It really impacted me.”
Even though Nicole didn’t realise at the time, she may have been a victim of obstetric violence, having withdrawn her consent during an internal exam. “It [an examination without consent] is just part of a wider pattern of abusive behaviours which we group under the phenomenon of obstetric violence,” Leah Hazard, midwife and author, tells i. “It refers to behaviours that are abusive, humiliating, or neglectful, and can encompass unwanted examinations, negative language, coercion, or actual physical harm.”
While midwifery in the UK is currently in crisis, with wards being understaffed and overstretched, Hazard said that obstetric violence should never be excused due to the stress of the job. “There is no excuse for being violent or abusive towards someone in a vulnerable position,” she says. “But a contributing factor can be the stress or pressure [midwives are under].” Kim Thomas, CEO of the Birth Trauma Association, says “this kind of assault can be extremely distressing for women”. “That feeling of being out of control, of having things done to your body without your consent, is deeply traumatic.” The impact can be long-lasting, often leading to PTSD symptoms, attachment issues, anxiety, and a distrust of health professionals, says Thomas.
When women are pregnant or about to give birth, they are in an unusually vulnerable condition, completely reliant on other people to stay safe, and trusting those whose care they are under. “They need to know that the staff have their back,” Mia Scotland, perinatal clinical psychologist, explains. “Doing something without our consent, ignoring the mothers, patronising her, or even just seeming uninterested can be experienced as frightening and lead to trauma symptoms and PTSD.
“Lack of agency and lack of control is dangerous psychologically when women are in labour, because it can leave them feeling vulnerable because those that are there to help us and baby survive, don’t seem to care, and there’s nothing they can do about it.” Despite this, Scotland said that obstetric violence is still hard for society to understand. “It’s regarded as impossible,” she said, noting how many women blame themselves, rather than doctors, for their experiences.
It’s hard to know exactly how many women have experienced obstetric violence in the UK as data isn’t collected and there has been very little research carried out. However, the Birth Trauma Association has anecdotal records of women reporting this. “One told us of an obstetrician, who hadn’t been present at the birth, walking into the room and, without introducing herself, attempted a manual removal of the placenta,” Thomas says. “The woman described it as the worst pain she’d ever experienced.”
Another reported an obstetrician inserting a catheter without permission during manual removal of the placenta. Another woman told of an “excruciating forceps birth without pain relief”. Women have claimed to Thomas that they were forcibly held down by midwives during procedures.
In January 2022, Ceri*, 38, from Merseyside, went to a maternity ward at 41 weeks pregnant to have an internal exam in order to see if her cervix was favourable for a so-called membrane sweep. She had been clear she would only consent to a sweep if her cervix was favourable. The midwife came into the room and, Ceri says, without warning, “rammed her hand” into Ceri’s vagina. “The treatment was unnecessarily invasive, painful and caused injury. She used force that caused my entire body to tense and shift backwards up the table. I shouted for her to stop, but she did not.”
After the midwife withdrew her hand, she told Ceri the sweep had been unsuccessful. “I was in shock,” Ceri says. “The physical treatment was traumatic but having your autonomy taken is frightening, humiliating, and belittling.” An hour later, Ceri rang the hospital to tell the midwife she hadn’t consented. “She told me I was upset as the sweep had not been successful”. Ceri later complained to the NHS Trust to no avail. “Failing to acknowledge that I hadn’t provided consent and saying I was upset because the sweep was likely unsuccessful compounded the traumatic experience.”
Ceri also tried to report it to the police, who took it no further. (Obstetric assault is not a specified criminal offence, though obstetric violence has in some cases been found to amount to assault and/or battery, which are criminal offences.) “It’s made me feel hopeless,” she says. “The experience has caused emotional health issues and I am now having to engage with trauma therapy. I have little to no trust of health services.”
Even though Thomas has heard from some women who come forward, she suspects there are those who keep quiet, assuming doctors and midwives were always simply doing their best – often in difficult circumstances. “It serves to silence women from talking about it,” says Thomas. But for all women to be protected we need to start raising awareness of obstetric violence as a possible issue, say campaigners.
“It needs to start in training,” urges Hazard. “Student midwives need to be educated about capacity and consent, and be aware of what constitutes obstetric violence. Also, this needs to be role modelled from the top down by management and senior staff who set a good example and make it clear these behaviours are not acceptable.”
Royal College of Midwives (RCM) executive director, midwife Birte Harlev-Lam, says that the training and education midwives do get “makes it clear they must seek and document explicit consent before they carry out any examination”. “Respecting a woman’s decision, whether they refuse treatment or if they change their mind while the examination is under way, must be paramount.”
Thomas would also like to see the Care Quality Commission (CQC) mandate that all maternity units have policies on consent that doctors and midwives are required to adhere to or face disciplinary procedures. When the CQC inspects a maternity unit, Thomas would hope it should solicit the views of women about their experiences of giving birth, and further investigate any unit where obstetric violence is reported.
In response, a CQC spokesperson said: “Any concerns CQC receive are looked at by our inspectors… patient consent is something we specifically look at when we monitor and inspect. All registered health and social care services must have robust processes in place to ensure consent is obtained from patients prior to care and treatment and practices around consent must be regularly monitored and reviewed. Where this is not happening we will make clear that action is needed by that provider and have a range of enforcement powers we can use if needed to protect people.
“Everyone has the right to safe, high-quality care – this includes being safe from abuse when accessing services. Any form of assault in a hospital setting is absolutely unacceptable and should we have evidence to suggest patients or staff are at risk of assault we would always follow that up, escalating to the police as appropriate.”
Dr Jacqui Williams, senior midwifery education adviser from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, says: “Every woman and baby has the right to safe, effective and kind midwifery care. This is enshrined in our code and standards of proficiency for midwives which set out the knowledge, skills and behaviours people can expect from their midwife. We are clear that professionals must get properly informed consent before carrying out any examination, and always respect, support and document a person’s right to accept or refuse treatment. Midwives should advocate for women’s preferences and decisions, treating them with kindness, respect and compassion at all times.”
The RCM recently led a collaborative project between families, midwives, obstetricians, other birth workers, listening to over 8,000 people across the UK to develop a shared language to ensure women can make informed choices and be supported in birth.
“None of this is particularly difficult,” Thomas concludes. “But it is all about culture change – maternity units have to treat women with dignity and respect.”

Cooley isn’t just a Pittsburgh kid who dreams of playing in front of the Penguins faithful, or one of the many inspired by Crosby and his club. The connection between him and the captain, between him and the team, runs much deeper. Back before his ascent through the youth hockey ranks, Cooley was one of a bunch of five-year-olds puttering around the ice under the watchful eye of Crosby himself. He was among a group of kids who got their start in the game because of the captain, gifted free hockey gear by No. 87’s Little Penguins program.
When that program started, the goal was just to get more kids in Pittsburgh playing hockey, to give local families an easier path to getting involved in the sport. Now, a decade and a half later, Crosby’s efforts in Pittsburgh have spawned something far greater than he or the Penguins expected.
While watching Ovechkin finally hoist the Cup that year remains one of Cooley’s most cherished hockey memories, his earliest recollection of his own life on the ice began a decade prior, as Crosby was on his way to winning his first title. It was in 2008, sandwiched between Cup Final disappointment and his first ring, that Crosby met with Penguins brass to figure out a way to make the game more accessible for young families in his adopted hometown. “The vision for the Little Penguins program really came from a conversation that our former president and CEO, David Morehouse, had with Sid back in the 2007-08 season,” says Rich Hixon. “Really the focus of it was we were looking to grow the game and really make this an opportunity for Pittsburgh to become a hockey town.”
“Sid came to me originally,” Morehouse said. ”He said he wanted to figure out how to make it easier for kids to play hockey, to kind of take down some of the economic barriers.”
Between the team, Crosby, and a couple sponsors, the Penguins would provide kids between the ages of five and nine free head-to-toe equipment, properly fitted, and 10 on-ice sessions. Six hundred kids enrolled right off the bat, and even more wanted in. So the Penguins increased the number of players they outfitted each year, averaging roughly a thousand per year since. All in all, around 14,000 children have taken their first spins as Little Penguins.
Eric Neilson has had a front-row seat to Crosby’s work with youth hockey, both back in Nova Scotia and in Pittsburgh. A former teammate of No. 87’s in Rimouski, who’s remained one of his closest friends since, Neilson knows better than most how dedicated the Penguins captain is to this work. “He has so much passion for the game of hockey and so for him to give back, that gives him pure joy,” Neilson says. “It’s not something that’s forced. It’s not something that’s, ‘Oh, I have to do this.’ It’s, ‘I want to do this.’
“You know, I got to know Darryl pretty good over the years, on a personal level, away from the rink,” he continues, calling Crosby by the Darryl Sittler-inspired nickname they gave him in their QMJHL days. “It’s not too many times I’ve seen him happier than when he’s on the ice with those kids. That smile that he’s got, that’s a big, genuine smile. He’s about as happy as he’s ever going to get right there.”
And come July 7, when Cooley’s name is called, come that first game in Pittsburgh, when Cooley and Crosby’s journey will come full circle, Neilson knows his friend will be looking on with pride. “It’s just something special and it’s very, very unique. I know that Darryl will never say it, but I’m sure he’s got a little smile on the inside about that. He’s very proud of that.”
“That’s something that for sure I’ve thought about,” Cooley says. “It would definitely be a special moment. And I think a pretty funny moment, too. He’s the reason — he got me into hockey, you know? Made me fall in love with it, too, just watching him compete. To be able to play against him would just be crazy. It probably wouldn’t even feel real.”

Q@A Trevor Zegras
A) anon, yes Trevor Zegras is an overgrown baby on the skates, a showman playing his acts and stunts, a playboy but also incredibly playfull and creative on the ice and from technical side.. He is the top scorer of tanking Anaheim aducks and although lacking finesse of his idol Kaner he is almost like him lolcjeck his cheeky a puck between the legs video.
youtube
B) anon, yes, McDavid's girlfriend Lauren is very trendy and sexy, the Pens Wags quite dowdy and I like Blackhawks wags and their style and meet ups. I just need to sort out my cookies on other phone ...
C) anon, Tazer is downhill for more reasons one of that is without doubt the pregnancy of his ex gf Lindsey Vechione who is expecting her 2nd child (well, she's 36 soon so no shock, not anybody is Kathy Leather and a simple rule of an ice hockey is You don't score and you don't defend ..You get a goal). Also he went on memory lane and whining prior of the season how all is different and he can't imagine to play for other NHL franchise..search it. Obviously we have no insight into his health struggles as well but I bet that 50 per cent is it u to his head . He has no puffy face in 2020,2021 and first half of 2022 before he has met a hippie yuppe Megan Butler from the group of Marcus Aubrey. I mean something else to be a fan of it and other thing is to have their stuff home with a fanatic admirer as a gf. Desperados do desperate things so his blindness with crazy woman Ashley who is behind Crosby Interesting to unfollow her on Insta. Marketa has cut him off for that and reading her gibberish about Crosby and all name calling and slut shaming of wags you know why. Their friendship is over. She moves and adjust even quicker than Lindsey as there was anything intimate between them. Kaner is gone in NYC and he is left alone and Tazer loves his routine and all exactly the same things and set ups. Last Mustang and the Blackhawks back office with CEO and their carousel roster does not make it easier for him. He's silly but obviously faithful hating changes

Following a busy week for SpaceX with the launch of two Starlink missions and the second launch of Starship, SpaceX is currently on track to meet its 100 launch goal of 2023. The first launch of the week will be on Tuesday, with a Falcon 9 placing 23 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit (LEO). On Thursday, ExPace is expected to launch an unknown payload on its Kuaizhou 1A rocket, followed shortly by Roscosmos launching a Bars-M payload on a Soyuz 2.1a. These launches will be the 187th through 189th orbital missions of 2023 — a pace that should ultimately see 210 total orbital launches this year. Falcon 9 Block 5 | Starlink Group 6-29 On Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 11:01 PM EST (04:01 UTC on Nov. 22), SpaceX will launch 23 Starlink v2 Mini satellites to LEO from Space Launch Complex 40 in Florida. The satellites will be placed by Falcon 9’s second stage into a 285 by 293-kilometer LEO, inclined 43.01 degrees following two burns by stage two. Over the coming months, the satellites will rise into the operational 530-kilometer circular orbit. Ahead of this launch, SpaceX has launched 5,445 Starlink satellites, of which 5,077 remain in orbit and 4,500 are in their operational orbit. The first stage, B1067, is flying for its 15th time after supporting CRS-22, Crew-3, Turksat 5B, Crew-4, CRS-25, Starlink Group 4-34, Hotbird 13G, O3b mPOWER 1 and 2, Starlink Group 5-2, Starlink Group 5-5, Starlink Group 5-9, Satria, Starlink Group 6-10, and Starlink Group 6-22; the latter mission launched just 40.21 days ahead of the current T0, marking the quickest refurbishment for a 15th flight. Falcon 9’s first stage booster was originally only certified to fly up to 10 times; after the first 10th flight on the Starlink v1.0 L27 mission in May of 2021, SpaceX realized the boosters had significantly more life left in them than expected. Accordingly, at this time the company performed recertification for up to 15 flights. Similarly, after Starlink Group 4-37 (the first 15th flight of a booster) the certification was bumped up to 20 flights. At this time, SpaceX is expected to further increase the maximum number of flights to 25, although the most flown booster (B1058) has only flown 18 times. Following the launch, B1067 will follow the usual flight profile, landing on A Shortfall of Gravitas, stationed just over 600 kilometers downrange. The drone ship was tugged by Crosby Skipper, as Bob was unavailable due to working a double shift as Doug undergoes maintenance. Bob will recover both fairing halves from the water, ~640 kilometers downrange. SpaceX support ship Bob returned to Port Canaveral overnight with four Falcon 9 fairing halves – from mPower 5&6 and Starlink 6-28.https://t.co/icguJj6CpG pic.twitter.com/4wy5t1EbLh — Gav Cornwell (@SpaceOffshore) November 20, 2023 After the three weekend launches, and Starlink Group 6-29 marking SpaceX’s 88th launch of 2023, for the first time all year, the company is on track to reach its 100-launch goal. Since the start of September, the company has flown a total of 27 times (with this launch marking 28), highlighting the even higher cadence in the second half of 2023 compared to the first. With this increase, SpaceX is currently scheduled to just meet its 100-launch goal. This unprecedented cadence has seen SpaceX having just under 50% of orbital launches this year (86 out of the 187, including this flight) — up from 33% of all orbital missions in 2023 (61 out of 186). In 2024, CEO Elon Musk has said that SpaceX is aiming to launch 12 times per month for a total of 144 times throughout the year. To reach this ambitious goal, SpaceX has filed for Starlink missions that will be returning to the launch site, starting with an option on Starlink Group 6-35. This will allow teams to increase the cadence from SLC-40, whose largest bottleneck is drone ship availability. Additionally, now that the crew access arm has been fully installed on SLC-40’s tower, the pad turnaround will be decreased from roughly four to roughly three days. Falcon 9 is vertical for tonight's launch of @Starlink satellites pic.twitter.com/GNYB70IfE6 — SpaceX (@SpaceX) November 8, 2023 On the other side of the United States, Vandenberg Space Force Base teams will also significantly reduce the turnaround of Space Launch Complex 4 East despite not replacing the transport erector with the newer “throw-back” design. Kuaizhou 1A | Unknown Payload Kuaizhou 1A is scheduled to lift off from the Mobile Launcher Pad at the Kichang Satellite Launch Center in China on Thursday, Nov. 23, at 10:00 UTC. The rocket is highly uncertain and may change; the payload is not known. Kuaizhou 1A stands 19.4 meters tall and can place up to 300 kilograms into LEO. A larger version of this vehicle, called Kuaizhou 12, is scheduled to launch in 2025 and will place 20,000 kilograms in LEO. Soyuz 2.1a | Bars-M n°5 Ending out the week, Roscosmos is set to launch the Bars-M payload into Sun-synchronous orbit on Nov. 23, at 20:00 UTC atop a Soyuz 2.1a. The Bars-M satellite is a surveillance satellite that will replace the Yantar-1KFT series. The satellite will use its SVIT propulsion system to maneuver in orbit. The satellite features an electro-optical camera, which was developed and built by Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association. Additionally, the satellite has a dual laser altimeter, which delivers topographic imagery. The stereo imagers give a ground resolution of one meter. Howard Crosby, CEO of LGX Energy Corp
I975 graduate of the University of Idaho, early in his career Howard Crosby worked as a technical editor for Westinghouse before joining United Nuclear Industries in 1981. UNC was a major uranium producer, and Howard Crosby worked for a division that provided direct assay instrumentation to industry.
Throughout the 1980’s Mr Crosby worked on financing projects in natural resources until forming his own consulting company, Crosby Enterprises in 1989. Through the 1990’s Howard Crosby consulted with companies in both oil and gas and mining, and in 2001 he assumed the role of CEO of Cadence Resources.
At that time, Cadence was a tiny OTC listed company with a market capitalization of less than $1 million. Initial efforts were focused on developing oil production in Wilbarger County in north Texas. Numerous producing wells were put on production over the next four years, with ever increasing cash flow as the oil price moved from $20/barrel to over $60/barrel. In addition, Cadence developed a large gas field in Desoto Parish LA, near Shreveport, with deep gas wells in two formations. Over 4 years, the market capitalization went from under $1 million to over $400 million. In early 2006, the company was sold in a share exchange to an AMEX listed oil and gas company.
Between 2004 and 2010, Mr Crosby was a founder of both High Plains Uranium and US Silver Corporation, both of which listed on the TSX and were sold for major increases in valuation over their original market values.
In more recent years, Howard Crosby was active in pursuing a large titanium deposit in Chile, as well as assisting in the redevelopment of the historic Bunker Hill Mine near Kellogg, Idaho, and assisted in the formation of Blackjack Silver, which is a private company in the process of developing major silver-lead-zinc resources in Butte, MT.
LGX Energy, formed this past fall, represents Howard Crosby’s return to the oil and gas industry to pursue an outstanding opportunity in the Illinois Basin in southern Indiana. It is his belief that this represents a major underdeveloped oil and gas resource in a favorable business oriented state at a time of increasing demand for oil in an environment of rising oil and gas prices.
Howard Crosby now lives in Palm Desert, California, where in addition to his business interests continues to pursue his love of golf, and performance music. He has recorded four CD’s, and his late uncle was the legendary American entertainer Bing Crosby.

Hours after Ukraine appealed to its Western allies to send tanks to help its forces defeat Russia, the United States on Thursday announced more than $2.5 billion in military aid; but no tanks. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov welcomed Britain's move to send its Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, while urging countries that have German-made Leopard 2 tanks to also send them to Ukraine. President Joe Biden said Thursday there is "no there there" when he was questioned about the discovery of classified documents and official records at his home and former office. "We found a handful of documents were filed in the wrong place," Biden said to reporters who questioned him during a tour of the damage from storms in California. "We immediately turned them over to the Archives and the Justice Department." Biden said he was "fully cooperating and looking forward to getting this resolved quickly." Eugene Plotkin’s 5 Negative Patterns To Avoid in Life
Tumblr media
When Bing Crosby sang the Great American Songbook classic by Johnny Mercer, “You’ve got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive / e-lim-in-ate the negative / latch on to the affirmative / don’t mess with Mr. In-Between,” he was really on to something.
All these years later, successful financier and investment banker Eugene Plotkin declares that getting ahead in life isn’t just about putting your nose to the grindstone — you’ve got to get rid of negative patterns that hold you back.
“It’s a sad fact of life that hard work is almost always a key part of success, but success is often not the result of hard work,” Plotkin, the CEO of TechWallet, admits. “I have seen many people work extremely hard but never get beyond living paycheck to paycheck. It’s heartbreaking, but the good news is that this situation can often be fixed by eliminating certain negative patterns.”
Eugene Plotkin’s Negative Pattern No. 1
Recent studies indicate that more than 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. This means that more than 150 million adults in the United States have little to no savings and would be devastated by a loss of income.
“We live in a consumer society,” Plotkin says. “As hard as we work to earn money, we often spend it far too easily. Marketing and advertising are more effective than ever. Companies have perfected the art of capturing your attention and your wallet. At the same time, banks and credit card companies make it way too easy to buy now and pay later. If you spend most of what you make, you will never be able to retire or even have a financial buffer. So, the first negative pattern to address is overconsumption.”
Eugene Plotkin’s Negative Pattern No. 2
Author Robert Greene stated: “It is, in fact, the height of selfishness to merely consume what others create and to retreat into a shell of limited goals and immediate pleasures.” Plotkin concurs. The CEO’s point is that overconsumption is often directly linked to underperformance.
“We are creatures of habit. We prefer the comfort of the known rut to the discomfort of the unknown highway,” Plotkin explains. “I have seen so many examples of people doing things inefficiently simply because they never took the opportunity to step back and reevaluate the bigger picture.
“During my days as an investment banker, I remember that there was a certain financial analysis that required a week of work, but when I looked at it I realized that most of the steps in the analysis that were being done manually could actually be automated. So I took a few weekends to build a program that would run the calculations automatically. Suddenly, an analysis that used to take a week of my time now took less than a day. That’s what I call working smarter rather than harder. That’s the second negative pattern to address: doing things the same old way.”
Eugene Plotkin’s Negative Pattern No. 3
According to a 2014 study by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology that appeared in Science Daily, more than 40% of what people do every day is the result of ingrained habits. Part of the reason is that it takes more than two months, on average, to change or break a habit.
“Just as we love habits, we hate pain,” Plotkin notes. “That is why we are always looking for that next fix, whether it’s our favorite television show, or our favorite sugar craving, or our favorite social media app. It used to be that getting rewards required a lot of personal discipline, but now it’s a click away. Even people who work hard at their jobs are forgetting how to work hard in their personal lives. So, their health goes, their ambition goes, their perseverance goes. That’s the third negative pattern: the lack of commitment to self-improvement.”
Eugene Plotkin’s Negative Habit No. 4
Plotkin points to the obesity epidemic in the United States, with more than 40% of adults suffering from some level of being overweight. Studies have shown that while obese individuals can be hard workers in their day jobs, they can struggle to apply that same work ethic to their health.
“I had my own struggles with weight when I was a young professional, and it was hard,” Plotkin admits. “Especially since food companies and restaurants make it so easy to overindulge. But at some point, I just realized that I could either blame ‘Big Food,’ or I could start taking responsibility for my own choices. I had to take ownership of what I did with my body, good or bad. And that’s the fourth negative pattern: blaming others. The blame game is easy, but it won’t ever get you to where you want to go.”
Psychologists often talk about the “blame cycle,” which is a pattern where blaming is used as a self-protection mechanism. This pattern is recognized as being highly destructive to both the individual engaging in blaming and to those around them.
Eugene Plotkin’s Negative Habit No. 5
Plotkin shares that he’s had to conquer these forces of negativity — and if he did, you could, too.
“When I stopped blaming others and started owning my actions, that was a turning point in my life,” he says. “But it wasn’t enough. There were still days when I didn’t want to get out of bed, let alone go to the gym. There were days when I didn’t want to do anything but watch television after a 12-hour work day, let alone spend another two hours working on my startup idea. There were days where I had to choose between a tedious book on derivatives and an exciting trip to Atlantic City. In each case, making the right choice required willpower. That’s the fifth and final negative pattern I want to talk about: the lack of willpower, the lack of discipline.
“It’s all about the mind,” Plotkin concludes. “You have to work your mind like a muscle. You have to exercise it every day by doing the thing that matters long term rather than the thing that gives you a mini-fix short term. There is a reason the word ‘success’ starts with ‘suck’ — you have to embrace the suck in order to reach ultimate success.”
