Teaser: "Every time I tell you you’re beautiful, I mean it."

Your week had not been going well. It was only Tuesday, yet you were approaching your final breaking point. Your exam for one class was on different chapters than you had anticipated, your exam in another was harder than you could have imagined, and you received a not-so-nice score on an essay worth forty percent of your grade in a third class. It felt like your entire schedule was laughing at you day after day.

Although you spent the week buried in books, it felt like your efforts were for nothing. How the hell am I going to come back from this?, you thought.

But, that wasn't all that you had in your path. The icing on the cake was Connor telling you he would be out of town for two whole weeks, leaving for a team trip. They would be spending the time at a new training facility, their coaches citing it as a chance to work in a different environment, minus all potential distractions. Of course, they paid him more than enough to steal him for two weeks, but why now?

You didn't let him know how terribly timed this trip was, or how you felt your heart shatter in your chest after the words left his mouth. It wasn't like he had a choice, or that you would never see him again. You were sad that you wouldn't be able to retreat into Connor as you had gotten used to. You were sad that you couldn't rely on him to hold you so you fell asleep in a reasonable time rather than toss and turn through your anxiety-ridden thoughts.

You felt like you were being irrational, wanting him to stay so bad. It was selfish.

You were quieter than usual this night, but Connor didn't think too much about it. There was a movie playing, so he didn't expect you to be talking much anyway.

But really, you were holding back tears.

Your first resort when you were this upset was always to cry. You cried earlier before you saw Connor, and yesterday in the shower. Crying wasn't a big deal to you, you knew it helped you feel better after. Still, you didn't want Connor to see you cry. Especially when he was part of the reason why.

Connor still had you wrapped in his arms, your back against his chest as you both faced the TV. You did your best to shut your mind off and enjoy the feeling and smell of Connor. This was one of the last nights you would have with him, and you didn't want it tainted by your mess of emotions.

He absentmindedly drew shapes on your stomach where his hand was sprawled. Lasting almost an hour more than usual, you managed to fall asleep on the couch with him.

He sighed when he noticed, kissing the back of your head gently so he wouldn't disturb you. I'm gonna miss this, he thought. Connor was just as torn as you. He had a job to do, one he was on contract for. And, one that he was always happy and motivated to excel in.

With you in the picture, however, everything was more complicated. He didn't like the travel aspect of his job as much anymore. He didn't enjoy the lack of privacy or the limited free time, even just from the team staff. Once they found out you had attended one of the games, Connor was getting bugged daily about making you a regular and inviting you to team events.

This was all a nuisance now. All because they got in his way of spending time with you undisturbed. It was unhealthy, really, how much he thought about you and wanted to be with you. The closer you got, the happier he was.

He wasn't really watching the movie, his mind racing with all the different changes he had experienced this past year. He no longer only thought of himself, it was always Connor and Y/N. Even his grocery list started to be influenced by your favorites and not just his. When he was deciding if a night with the guys was happening, he always factored in your schedule, and if it was a better night to spend time with you than others. He would drop almost anything for you because he knew your schedule was just as busy as his.

Yet, he couldn't say no to this trip. And that was the problem: work would always trump what either of you wanted.

You could hear the quiet hum on the TV as you opened your eyes a few hours later. You looked around, noticing that you were in a different position than you remembered. You were laying on your stomach, which would never be possible if Connor was still beside you.

“Con?” You mumbled, slightly stretching and nuzzling you face into the pillow.

“Right here, baby,” You felt a squeeze to your calf. You sat up on your elbows, seeing Connor sitting with your feet in his lap.

“What time is it?”

He looked at his watch, “9:30. Did you have a good nap?”

“Not really,” You mumbled, laying back down. Connor moved your legs from his lap before sliding between you and the back of the couch again. You sighed as he wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you into him.

You loved that he never hesitated to be wrapped around you now. You hadn't even been awake thirty seconds, and now you were engulfed in his arms. How are you ever going to get used to this?

“Was it too short for you?” He asked, laughing.

“I feel like I could sleep for weeks,” You said, tangling your legs with his. “What have you been doing?”

“Watching games,” He said, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. “Are you hungry?”

“Not really,” You sighed, closing your eyes again.

You could feel Connor chuckle as he spoke up again, “Do you not sleep at night?”

“It is nighttime,” You smiled into his shirt.

“You’re lucky you’re cute when you sleep,” He mumbled against your head. "We should head to bed, then."

"Did I ruin any plans?" You yawned.

"Of course not," He answered, squeezing you in his arms. "There were no plans, just you."

You leaned your head up to kiss his pulse point. "I hate that you have to leave for two weeks."

"I know," He let out a sigh. "But, it'll go by fast and I'll be back."

"Can you carry me upstairs?" You smirked. You could feel him roll his eyes as he sat up.

"You're also a pain in my ass, baby," He said, using the remote to turn off the TV. "You're lucky I like it."

"So lucky," You teased.

"Shut up," He laughed. Unannounced, he slid his arms under you and pulled you into his arms. You gasped, grabbing for him to anchor yourself.

"What the hell is wrong with you? You could have warned me."

"You wanted a ride, I'm giving it to you. I can put you down, no problem."

"Has anyone told you how much a brat you are?" You mumbled into his neck.

"A few people, actually," He laughed. He carried you up his stairs and into his bedroom.

"Bathroom, please," You requested. Connor obliged, letting you down at his bathroom door.

"Your highness," He joked.

"Thanks, baby," You smiled.

He leaned down to press a kiss to your lips, "Don't take long."

You did. To be fair, you finally remembered to bring each step of you nighttime skincare routine, something you always failed to do. It wasn't absurd, maybe 12 minutes of steps, but Connor would never understand. He only washed his face and then dried it with a towel...

"Babe," You could hear him groan from his bed.

"Just a second," You rolled your eyes in the mirror. Finally, you put on your moisturizer before tucking everything back into your bag. You changed into your PJs for the night, one of Connor's old boxers, and your old T-shirts.

“You look cute,” You heard Connor say from his bed once you turned off his bathroom light. You rolled your eyes as you put your clothes in the laundry hamper.

“Shut up.”

He laughed, “What? I’m being serious!”

“I told you not to say anything about how I look before bed,” You replied.

“Yeah, and I don’t know why. You look cute, you always do,” He responded.

Sighing, you slid into his bed next to him. “I can’t tell if you’re being serious or just an asshole, so I don’t know what you want me to say”

He laughed, reaching over to pull you to his chest, “You know I’m serious. Every time I tell you you’re beautiful, I mean it."

You cuddled into his chest, both of you enjoying the silence for a few moments. You were just beginning to get used to having Connor around for your routines. One time, he sat in the bathroom just to watch you do every step. Now, he settled for waiting from the bed and rushing you. It felt incredibly domestic. Things with Connor had been starting to feel more and more like this as time went on.

You loved this trend, because you were finally getting the true experience of having a boyfriend. In your past, you had always been the one giving more and feeling more. But with Connor, he was just as invested as you.

That's why, the next day when you had hit the peak of your anxiety, your first instinct was to find a corner and call Connor. He had left you at his place for early practice, and now you were at your school's library because you couldn't focus anywhere else.

You studied for a bit, and then took one of your online exams... which went terribly. It took everything not to slam your computer close and scream. Instead, you slowly closed your laptop, picked up your phone, and moved yourself to an empty stairwell.

You went to your recents, which surprisingly was only Connor and family. Dialing his number, you leaned back against the wall.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Con,” You bit your lip. “Are you busy?”

“I’m at the rink, so a little,” He responded. “Why? What’s up?”

“I just had a tough morning and wanted to talk,” You mumbled. “I just failed my test. I studied so ha-”

“-Wait, I’m sorry. I really can't stay on the phone, I’m with the team,” He cut you off. “Can I call you after practice?”

You paused, “Uhm, okay? I didn’t even finish my sentence.”

“I know, I’m sorry,” He breathed, sighing after. “I have practice soon, and I really have to focus. They’re counting on me here.”

“Mhm,” You nodded, although he couldn’t see you. You were doing your best to hide your disappointment because it really wasn't his fault, but add another point to the world against you. “Sorry I called.”

“I don’t want you to be upset with me,” He responded, pausing for a beat. “I want to talk to you, I want to help, but I can’t right this second, especially if it can wait.” You could wait.

“Understood,” You mumbled.

He sighed, “Can we talk when I’m done with practice? Please? I want to be able to give you my full attention.”

“Sure.”

“Baby, I can hear it in your voice, I know you’re upset,” He said. “I'm just not in the space or environment right now to give you the attention you deserve and need."

"You have no idea what I need, Connor. You're not even listening."

He let out a deep sigh, and you were sure he was probably scratching his head about what to say to not make things worse. "Y/N, please."

“When you go through your shit with hockey, I’m always there and I listen to everything you say to me. You’ve called me while I was slammed with work or assignments before and what did I do? I gave you time to vent. I tried. You barely did that and for once, I actually just needed my boyfriend to listen. But of course, hockey comes first. Have fun at practice, Connor. I guess I’ll talk to you after, like you said.”

You could faintly hear him say your name as you removed the phone from your ear and ended the call. Well, that's not what you wanted.

Your phone buzzed seconds later with a text from him.

Connor: I'm sorry. I don't want you to be upset. I'll come over right after I'm done, I promise.

You were so over it.

You went back to your desk, gathered everything, and headed back home. When you got to your bedroom, you dropped your stuff at your door before laying face down on your bed until you settled in for a nap.

As you lounged on your couch later that day with Netflix playing on the TV, your phone buzzed from the table.

Connor: Are you still home?

You sat back, locking your phone. Minutes later, it buzzed again.

Connor: Can we talk? Please

You: I’m home

Instead of a text, you heard a knock at your door. You got up, opening it.

“Did you text me after you got here?”

He nodded, his hands in his pockets. “I literally just left practice, I haven't gone home yet.”

You stepped aside to let him in. As he took his coat off, you walked back over to the couch, laying back down. Connor came over, sitting by your legs but facing you. “Can we turn this off for a second?”

“Why?” You kept your eyes on the screen but you could feel his staring at you.

“Baby,” He said, softly. “Please.”

You reached for the remote, pressing the power button. You sat in silence for a few moments before Connor spoke again.

“Ever since I was six, my life has been hockey. I’ve never cared about anything as much, and I’ve been fine with that. It’s brought me a lot of success and it makes me hap-”

“-I get it,” You cut him off. “You love hockey, and hockey loves you.”

“Can we, just..?” He huffed before gently pushing your legs off of the couch and moving closer to you.

“What are you doing?” You asked, shifting on the couch so you were sitting up.

“You’re pissed, and I deserve it. But, I’m trying to talk to you and I can’t do that if you're not even looking at me.”

“I can still hear without looking at you,” You mumbled. “And, I’m not pissed.”

“I don’t know how to be someone’s boyfriend,” He sighed, running his hands through his hair. “I know it’s common sense, and I’m trying but I fucked up today. You’re right, I could have at least given you five minutes, and I’m sorry for that. I had the coaches in my head and I was being a fucking idiot. You’re supposed to be able to call me whenever something happens, and I’m supposed to listen. I want to listen. As important as hockey is to me, so are you and I know I need to do a better job of showing that.”

You didn’t say anything as he looked at you. You got up from the couch, walking over to the kitchen to pull out the wine bottle from your fridge. Connor followed you, sitting at the counter.

A few hours after your phone conversation, you realized you bit Connor's head off, not because of anything he did, but moreso the combination of circumstances that pushed you to call in the first place. He was working, he had the right and reason to cut the call short.

“You have always been there for me whenever I was going through something and you didn’t deserve me shutting you down like that. I’m really, really sorry.”

You filled a glass with wine, looking over at him. “Do you want one?”

“Babe, seriously,” He said. “We have to talk about this.”

“I heard everything you said, Connor.”

“Can you come sit?”

You sighed, bringing the bottle and glass with you to sit next to Connor.

“What happened today?” He asked softly, pulling you chair closer to his.

“I spent the whole day crying, Connor,” You responded, looking over at him. “The entire day. And, I thought that calling you would help but it just made everything worse. I’m exhausted, sad, and just over it.”

“You don’t want to talk about it?”

“Not at all,” You took an embarrassingly large sip of the wine.

“Can I stay?” He searched your face. “Or, do you want me to leave? I would understand if you did.”

“Please stay,” You whispered. You didn’t expect your voice to fail you, but Connor caught on as his shoulders fell. He wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into his chest. This is what you needed. You called Connor that morning because in a matter of seconds, he could make you feel better. Having that backfire made your problems even worse, but now, finally having him exactly where you needed him, you didn’t even care about this morning.

I’m fucked, you thought, as you relaxed into him almost immediately. How can one person make everything better, even after a major failure?

Besides this morning, Connor always made you feel safe and heard. You didn’t know how you had never experienced this with your exes, but you wouldn’t mind never having to give this up.

“I’m sorry that you had a bad day,” He mumbled into your shoulder after a few moments. “And, I’m sorry I made it worse and was such a dick.”

“I forgive you.”

He pulled back, making you look at him. “Never again.”

“I shouldn’t have called you at practice, anyway,” You responded, reaching for your glass again.

He shook his head, “That's not true. You can call me whenever you need me. I was in the wrong today, not you. You needed me and I wasn’t there.”

“It’s fine,” You said. After taking another sizable gulp, you set the glass back down and looked back at him. He was already looking at you, like you had guessed.

“What do you want to do?” He asked softly, moving the hair that had fallen past your face.

“Cuddle,” The barely audible word was loud enough as Connor smiled.

“I can definitely do that.”

"And, I'm sorry I snapped at you earlier. I should have known that calling you at work would not bode well."

"You were having a tough time," He started. "I'm your boyfriend, you have a right to call me, even if I was on the ice. I can't guarantee that I'll answer, but at least I'll know I need to call you back. I don't want you to stop yourself from asking for me and my time. "Well, I'm not gonna let you because you don't have to apologize anymore," He said, standing up. "Let's move back to the couch."

He grabbed the bottle for you, and you followed him to your living room. He placed the bottle on your coaster before disappearing back into the kitchen. He came back a few moments later with a beer in his hand.

You didn't even like beer. But, once you noticed how Connor's home bar was filled with this particular brand, you made sure to always have a pack in your fridge for him. You smiled to yourself, for the first time that day, simply because you were reminded how much Connor had taken over your life, in all the best ways.

"What?" Connor couldn't help the smile that was fighting its way onto his face from your expression. He could feel his heart skip a beat as he got comfortable in his spot on your couch.

"I hate beer."

He rolled his eyes, "I'm well aware."

a/n: i loved this concept and idk why but i just see connor being a very overprotective brother.

“I just don’t get why you’re moving here, why would you want to move when you can stay closer to your family?” You should have known that telling Connor your plans would have gone this way. He had always been the protective older brother but the minute you had really entered the dating world he had only gotten worse. It didn’t get any better when you started dating Matthew Tkachuk and even though they had no problems beforehand now Connor liked making problems simply because you were his baby sister.

“Maybe because my boyfriend lives here and flying back and forth is tiring. I finished school this past semester there’s nothing really keeping me there.” You told him and you knew the minute the words left your mouth it was. “Except your family.” There it was, you weren’t sure why he had to make this a picking game.

He had willingly come down to Florida to watch the Eastern Conference Final with you and spend some time here with Matthew and his family. For some reason you had thought now would be a good time to spring this information on him, something you and Matthew had talked about for months now but was actually close to becoming a reality. “Connor, you’re my big brother and I appreciate you but I’m not a baby anymore.” You warned him because you knew this wasn’t about just the moving.

“It’s just you’re my baby sister, you’re one of my best friends and now you start dating this guy and you’re just leaving.” You knew Matthew would be home soon, he had just gone to grab some takeout food for all of you and you wanted to get everything cleared up before he got back. “We’ve been together for a year this isn’t sudden.” You pointed out and he gave you a big sigh, nodding his head and you knew it was finally hitting him that he was being unreasonable.

At that same moment you heard the door open and in came your boyfriend with what seemed like enough food to feed the whole apartment complex. “I got a little bit of everything for us.” He told you as he set everything on the table. “Babe, there’s three of us.” A laugh left your lips as he gave you a quick kiss to the top of your head, the way he always greeted you regardless of how long it had been since the last time he saw you.

You all sat down at the table, grabbing different containers of food and enjoying the deliciousness of it. Connor took this time to finally speak up. “So Matthew, I heard my sister was planning on moving down here with you.” Your stomach did a flip because was he about to just freak out on your boyfriend about this. “Yeah, we talked about it but we also thought that for the summers and off season we could go up there to spend time with your family and mine.”

That was one thing you hadn’t mentioned to Connor because of the way he had originally reacted but you could tell what Matthew had said was enough to soften the whole blow of you moving away from your family. “Well, I guess all I can say is you better take care of her and don’t think that next season I’ll take it easy on you just because you’re dating my sister.”

Are They The NHL Power Couple or Just Best Friends?

If you know who Connor McDavid is then you would definitely know who Y/n L/n is. The young captain of the Edmonton Oilers, who is only aged 19, is very quiet about his private life, rarely posting on social media. But one thing for certain is that he constantly posts about his "best friend" Y/n L/n, or Y/n/n as he calls her. If either one of them isn't posting a picture about the other, usually someone else – either their childhood friends Y/b/f/n or Dylan Strome or a teammate of McDavid's – posts a picture of the two. The pair claims their just best friends but by the looks of the pictures, everyone expects them to be something more than just best friends. Even their close friends and family hint towards them being more than best friends. It seems like everyone wants them to be a couple.

From what we know, McDavid and L/n have known each other since birth; their parents were close friends before either of them were born. What we do know is that L/n was born in 1998, meaning she is only a year younger than McDavid. Our first public sighting of her was at the 2015 NHL draft, where McDavid was drafted 1st overall by Edmonton Oilers. There we witnessed McDavid celebrating the announcement by hugging his family and pressing a kiss to L/n's forehead, the young teenagers smiling at each other. As the years go on and McDavid becomes one of the best players in the league, their "friendship" becomes more public.

Currently, L/n is in Edmonton and our feed is getting flooded with photos of the best friends from both McDavid and L/n , along with their friends and family. These photos prove there is something between them but we don't know what that something is. Here are 10 photos to help you get to know the girl behind the youngest captain in NHL history and 5 photos that make us believe that there are sparks are flying between Connor McDavid and his best friend, Y/n L/n.

1) The Girl Behind The Captain

Y/n L/n seems to have her selfie game down pat though as she looks absolutely stunning in this picture she posted last month. It's a simple picture really, with not all that much going on, so the fact that she still manages to look so good speaks volumes. The selfie craze might be a little overdone in most cases but what we can say Connor is a lucky guy.

2) Besties

Y/n posted this photo during this past offseason when the large group of friends went on holiday to Europe, celebrating many things, like Octavia's Graduation and Connor's rookie season celebration. In this picture: Y/n L/n, best friend of Connor McDavid; Y/b/f/n, girlfriend of Oiler's forward Leon Draisaitl; Clover Bennett, cousin of New Jersey Devil's Forward Beau Bennett; Zara Strome, younger sister of New York Islanders' Forward Ryan Strome and Arizona Coyotes' Forward Dylan Strome; and Kennedy Moore, Girlfriend of Dylan Strome.

3) Prom Season

This past May, McDavid himself posted this picture to his Instagram, mcdavid97. Y/n, who was finishing her senior year, had asked Connor to be her date to her senior prom back in Erie. The caption was "Prom with Y/n/n 💕 #4". We believe that the hashtag four is the number of Proms they've attended together. Doesn't Y/n look just stunning though?

4) Talented

Just last month, Y/n represented the US at the Shotokan Karate World Championship in Paris. Her sister, Y/s/n, posted this photo, congratulating Y/n on her gold medals in her events. This isn't the first time she has been declared world champion. The young girl has travelled the world, competing and representing her country.

5) Siblings

Now we know McDavid has an older brother, but Y/n has an older sister named Y/s/n who we predict is roughly the same age as Connor's brother, Cameron McDavid. The two sisters are close, often posting photos of each other and photos together. And from the comments on their posts, all siblings are close, along with the Stromes and the Y/b/f/l/n. If we wanted to join any family, it would be the McDavids or L/n.

6) Support

Dylan Strome, now of the Arizona Coyotes, posted this after an Erie Otters game in 2015, McDavid's last season with the Otters. The caption thanked Y/n for always being at their games and being their number one supporter. It proves her, and Y/b/f/n, have been there since the start of both of their hockey careers.

7) Future Family

Earlier this year, McDavid's older brother Cameron finally married his high school sweetheart, Holly Jensen. The day after the event, the bride posted this adorable photo of herself and her bridesmaids, including Y/n L/n (Far Right). We knew that Willow was close to the McDavids but they were closer than we thought! At the age of 17, L/n was asked to be a bridesmaid for the McDavid family wedding. She looks absolutely beautiful and we wished our puberty was that good!

8) WAG Life

At the age of 18, young Y/n is constantly spotted with the older WAGs; and not just Oiler WAGs! Even though she is not publicly known as a WAG, L/n is known to hang out with Kelly Talbot, Y/b/f/n and Mikayla Marrelli (Darnell Nurse' girlfriend) in Edmonton. But the young adult is also friends with many of the Lady Leafs, such as Stephanie Le Chance, Molly Robinson, Lucy Cashin and Sydney Esiason. But it doesn't stop there, she's also been seen with Arizona WAGs such as her best friends, Zara Strome and Clove Bennett.

9) Adorableness

Posted only yesterday by Y/n, the two friends are shown skating together, McDavid having to hold the brunette steady as they posed for the picture. If you look in the comments of the post, McDavid replies with "Just as bad as last time ❤️" and Y/b/f/n state that she's still bad at ice skating even though "she's basically dating an NHL player". I mean is that confirming everyone's wishing of them being together?

10) Future Mum

Isn't this picture just adorable?! No, she doesn't have a child; L/n just happens to love kids! She is known to be the team's babysitter when she is in Edmonton. This was posted by the teenager's older sister. The baby she's holding is the girl's niece. Honestly, if McDavid and L/n have a baby, wouldn't it be the cutest baby alive?!

11) Potterhead

This summer, we got updates on the young Oilers rookie as he experienced his first offseason of his NHL career. With his first year paycheck, he could have bought many things but instead, he decided to spoil his best friend. McDavid ended up taking L/n to the place she had always wanted to go since she was a kid, The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter. There, the pair took over the Oilers Instagram, doing a live stream as the pair sat and drank butterbeer at the Leaky Cauldron. This photo, posted by a fan, was a screenshot of the Livestream as they headed to the ride, Forbidden Journey.

12) High School Sweethearts

Y/n's best friend Y/b/f/n, posted this when McDavid was in his senior year. This was taken during Homecoming where all the athletes are celebrated for their part in the school spirit. McDavid played ice hockey for Erie Otters at this point, and well recognised at the school, while Y/n was a cheerleader for her school team while also heavily training in karate.

13) Travel Bug

How is she only 18 and yet travelled to more countries than most of us have in our entire lives? Whilst travelling the world for karate competitions, she also regularly travels during the summer with her friends and family, this year travelling to Europe with a group of friends as a graduation celebration. This stunning photo was posted by McDavid last June, he captioned this by simply putting the heart emoji underneath it.

14) Animal Lover

Don't you just want to steal this cute pup? The L/n family pet is a rescue German Sheppard, which was gifted to Octavia by her family after Connor and Dylan had been drafted in 2015. Rightfully named after Oilers mascot, the gorgeous dog is named Hunter. We don't know if L/n brought the dog with her to Edmonton, but we hope that we get more pictures of this in the future.

15) The Look

And our favourite picture of the two best friends was posted by the Edmonton Oilers account its self, reposted by the NHL official account. This year's Thanksgiving fundraiser night was a blast and after his killer rookie season and being named the captain, McDavid had a stunning girl by his side for the night. The team account posted this adorable photo of the young friends, both looking amazing. But just by looking at them, you can tell there is something more. Now it's a waiting game.

We're just saying if they were together, they would be the NHL's power couple!
