Who has the best head accessory? Who wears it best? Tyrannoscelio (bottom), Dirhinus (middle) or Sparasion (top)? They're all outlandishly stylish as far as this Trichopria (left) is concerned...

What a little lovely parasitic wasp in the Chalcididae clan. This one appears to be Conura dema, based on picture booking from bugguide.net. I am not sure if that is true or not, but it is a very reasonable match, but I will let experts determine and validate that identification. Captured at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester County, Maryland. Photography by Elizabeth Garcia.

what is your favourite bug?
ough such a tough question.... I feel like whatever one I'm looking at in the moment is my favorite <3
But a few bugs that really made me lose it when I saw them for the first time were Dobsonflies and owlflies. And more and more I'm drawn to many many species of wasps like the graceful long tail of the ichneumonidaes anf the huge thighs of the chalcididae or the bedazzled cuckoo wasp. Their complicated and intense life histories are all both horror stories for half the parties involved but incredible tales of evolution for the other.
I remember in college entomology class my professor put a cuckoo wasp under a microscope for the first time and I became obsessed with it and couldn't look away, and it really captured me how much magic and beauty existed unseen to most people in tiny overlooked creatures.
I know I'm a bee guy and i do have a lot of favorite bee species I could ramble on about (nomia bees are a fav), but now that I'm not working with pollinators every day in my career I'm finding myself more interested in the other, more less beloved hymenoptera (I went on a sawfly deep dive last week).
Thanks for the ask!

Wasp workout. Heydenia and Brachymeria never skip leg day. Their secret is out.
**I appreciate the constructive criticism! Updated the comic and repositioned the legs to actually make them look as if they are holding the dumbbells.**

It has, once again, been a long time since I have posted. After the bushfires there was a massive sigh of relief and I think we all went into collapse-mode. We were greeted with rain and lots of it, to the point where we had floods. Then we were greeted with hail that has written off many cars and damaged countless others. Then more rain. And more. For the very first time in Canberra, it is so green that you could mistake it for the coast! Contrastingly, much of the coast was blackened by the fires that threatened us in the new year. It is just beginning to recover its greenery after a decent downpour.
And while we still sit in shock and try and get our heads around it, the coronavirus has been spreading and we have had to be very diligent in where we can get some toilet paper when most of the shelves are empty.
While the humans are running around and fretting, the insect world in our garden has suddenly flourished and celebrated. There is a massive increase in the amount of insects and species I'm finding just in our backyard! I have been struggling for the past couple of years to find anything other than ants and flies and suddenly everything is out and about!
I ran outside excitedly with the Nikon like a kid let loose in a lollie shop. Upon searching around the yard, I found this beautiful wasp resting in the asparagus bushes. I didn’t really know what to make of this beautiful creature other than it was something that took flight and apparently never missed “leg-day”. Coincidentally, in the Entomology Facebook group, someone had discovered a bunch of these in a moth cocoon and had shared the observation with us which helped me identify that this is a parasitic wasp from the Chalcididae family.
Absolutely stunning.
