Look at the soul- Part 10 There you’ll be
Cillian Murphy x OC
Series master list
⚠️ Grief (but the comfort afterwards compensates)
🎭 Special thanks to @heidimoreton for creating the most perfect and beautiful moodboard for this part! 🥰✨ I’ve been saving this for so long, this chapter holds a very special place in my heart since it was one of the very firsts scenes I had in mind, I didn’t know how I’d get there, only this had to be part of the story… as Cillian realizes that in order to be able to enjoy something new, he needs to let go first of what’s keeping him locked.
Word count: 3,840 (without the song)
Song: There you’ll be by Faith Hill
Tumblr media
“Adria!” Enda shouted from behind, people walking on the street turned to look at him but he simply didn’t care. Cillian followed him in silence.
Marianne blushed as she heard him calling her by her character’s name several times until he reached her.
“On a trip to fulfill your coffee addiction?”
“Better than yours.” She pointed at the cigarette between his fingers.
“Touché.” Edna chuckled looking at Cillian, she had been getting better at keeping up with his sense of humor and sometimes she got a better comeback.
“Turn it off man, it’s bad for her lungs.” Cillian asked him politely.
“I’m curious what do you have in there?”
Marianne looked at the tote bag Enda just pointed.
“Got a few books at the café, I’m planning to start it this Friday.”
Enda looked at her with a shocked expression. “How old are you? Eighty two? Marianne this is Ireland, you’re by yourself and no one knows you here, should be going out until four in the morning, pass out… have a great time.”
“Reading a book with a glass of wine it’s more like my kind of night.” She replied shyly. “And it’s a great plan by the way.”
“Live, woman… go out and live life! That’s why you’re single.” Enda joked. “Both of you.”
“Don’t be rude mate.” Cillian tried to defend.
“Just telling the truth.” He shuddered. “Hopefully you’ll get someone thanks to the play.”
“Enda!” Marianne opened her eyes wide.
“What? Could be a good opportunity to make a casting or something for you.”
Reaching the steps of the Olympia theater, she shook her head slightly.
“Don’t listen to him, it’s a consequence of his age, he’s losing the filter.”
“Aye, you’re not getting any younger.” Enda patted Cillian on the back.
“Doesn’t matter you’ll always be older than us.” He gave Marianne a small wink.
“Go on stage now, before I start the audition right away.”
As everyone took their place, the lights tech started to make some adjustment, the cast began the rehearsal.
“Stop, stop.” Enda asked interrupting the scene going on stage. “We need the lights off just as Adria reaches the top step, all theater lights off, this light on her.” He explained and then took off his glasses, the big opening was around the corner and this was the most important part.
“Every body keep your counts right.” Heidi called over the microphone.
Marianne positioned herself close to the bar again, her eyes and ears on Enda to follow his instructions.
“Cillian on your count.”
As the cast started moving around and a bright light was focused on Adria, the screenplay writer walked towards his friend.
“Holy fuck.” Enda exhaled loudly as they both watched the scene unfold on stage.
“I know man.” Cillian crossed his arms against his chest without moving his eyes from Marianne.
Tumblr media
Even after weeks of rehearsals, it kept taking them by surprise once she got into character, dress and characterization included. They were both holding their breaths as she looked back, over her shoulder towards them. Her emerald eyes boring into their souls.
“Is this one of those stories they love to portray in movies right?”
Cillian looked at him confused.
“I’ve known you since you were a noisy teen, don’t try to fool me.” Enda adjusted the glasses on his nose. “You have fallen deep for her and I don’t blame you to be honest… I mean, who wouldn’t?”
Cillian’s eyes moved around the theater without locking eye contact with Enda. He remained quiet, letting the words sink in.
“It’s alright to move on, it’s been a while. You just have to make peace with you-know-who first, close the cycle they call it.” Enda squeezed his shoulder. “Go home man, think about it.”
Cillian looked back on stage, finding Marianne there turning her face around, over her shoulder. The realization feeling heavier on his shoulders.
There was no use to try to deny it now, Enda only gave his own thoughts a loud voice.
Was it a proper time to move on?
How are you supposed to do that?
Would Marianne feel the same about him?
Slowly, day by day she found a way to make him smile, she gave him back the strength and need to be on stage. To do what he loved the most and without even noticing, made herself earn a spot inside his heart.
Grieving doesn’t come with a manual, there are no instructions to know if you’re taking the long way or the short route. Words of support come and go, but the only thing that sets the pace it’s your own heart.
As a few rain drops started to wet his face, Cillian shuddered, not because it was cold, but because this would represent a major change in his life, he couldn’t even come close to measure the impact this would bring into him.
Could he take this chance after losing his wife?
Could it be Marianne the one helping him heal his heart? Did he really stand a chance with her? Even after being in his forties?
For the first time he felt self conscious about his age, he wasn’t the young lad he was once…
And besides that, moving on after a breakup or a divorce is completely different than starting all over again after being a widower. He had now developed several mannerisms over time, he had an already built in life, an ongoing list of things he could no longer tolerate, in-laws that were looking at the time were he would make the slightest mistake and last but not least, his sons… but above all of that he was just a lonely man and without an ounce of being pretentious, he thought he deserved to give love a second chance.
He wanted to be happy, to feel alive again…
Was he ready to let go of the memory of his late wife to take a chance to be happy again? Fall back in love?
He had to give Marianne credit because she lifted him up when he needed it the most, she had been there as a lifeline for him the moment he met her on that bus and ever since she had been holding a candle to light his path back to theater among other projects.
That wasn’t entirely a surprise, because deep down she had this internal light that could bright even the darkest room.
It had been a while since the last time he went there, the atmosphere suddenly felt dense, he wanted to apologize for not coming sooner, he didn’t even paid attention of anything around him on his way there.
The day he met Marianne on the bus exactly, that was the last time he had been there visiting his late wife’s urn, after that he stopped completely, something had been keeping him away.
Someone more likely.
“Hey,” his voice cracked a bit, “I’m sorry I haven’t been here lately, loads of things going on, the kids are alright growing up so fast. Andrew is even taller than me already,” he chuckled looking at his late wife’s name engraved. “Truth is I don’t have a valid excuse… I’ve been working on a play, yeah it’s a great script and it’s been a massive therapy for me, the only thing that keeps my mind off but you already know that right? There are days where I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing, losing you forced me to be around the boys completely and we didn’t had the phone line for like a week because I forgot to pay the bill once, you took care of everything… but I’m trying, for the boys, for me… for you.”
Cillian let out a heavy sigh, feeling embarrassed suddenly.
“But that’s not what I came for…” he cleared his throat.
His hand trembled when he touched the cold stone.
“One of those nights after you left, I was lying in bed unable to sleep and reality hit me hard, my mind started bombarding me with these thoughts ’is this how it’s going to be from now on?’… I know you’re not coming back, and you’ll always be the mother of my kids… but I met someone a-and I don’t know how she feels, but I wanted to let you know that I decided to give it a try… is that alright? To rebuild my personal life and have someone by my side?”
In my dreams, I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart, there'll always be a place for you for all my life
He could feel the wedding band around his finger burning, of course it wasn’t real, it was just a thing made by his mind, but he needed to do it. The lump in his throat growing.
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am, there you'll be
“I promise you I’ll help the boys keep your memory alive in some way… I better go, have to make dinner for those beasts.” He added with a small chuckle.
Everyone carries grieving in different ways and to him everything is valid, or at least that’s what he wanted to think because as he stepped outside one of the classic Irish rain started to pour down as if somehow the rain came to wash over his pain, his grief and also the guilt of thinking about a brand new start with someone else.
Cillian couldn’t find a single word to describe how he felt, but the weight on his shoulders was definitely lighter this time around.
The shadow of mourning finally stopped wrapping its coat around him.
Arriving home later, he left his shoes by the steps. Walking across the corridor he was met by the familiar sounds of his sons and dog, but he stopped on his tracks as a photo of his late wife dressed in her wedding dress all those years ago stared at him from the shelves.
This was his way of saying goodbye, of letting go finally of the woman who had been his partner for the last eighteen years.
Rolling the gold wedding band between his thumb and forefinger he took a moment to rub the edge, the symbol of their marriage, their vows, the dreams they once shared.
And I always will remember all the strength you gave to me
Placing his wedding band next to the photo, he gave her one last look. “Thank you for giving me my boys.”
He was ready to open up his heart again.
“Hey Da.” Andrew, his eldest son greeted him as he walked into the kitchen.
“You’re studying, guess that’s why it’s raining.” He joked.
“Yeah, I don’t understand anything.”
Part of his abilities as an actor was learning things for the role he was portraying, but school assignments were a pain in the arse for him.
“Sorry buddy, you know I suck at this but if you need some help…”
“Are you gonna call aunt Orla? No thanks, last time she confused me more.”
Cillian couldn’t help but chuckle at his son’s statement. But he had someone else in mind.
“Do you want help or not?”
“Ya.”
Cillian saw Andrew groan defeated, resting his head on the book. So he quickly took his phone and opened a new text message.
Heyya’ are you busy?
Hello! No, why?
I know you love numbers, interested in doing some tutoring? SOS it’s for my son. He wrote back.
Of course, come over.
And just like that she was able to brighten his day in mere minutes. Even if it was the darkest night.
“Pick up your stuff, we’re going. Benjamin! We’re going out, are you coming?” He shouted from the first floor.
“Can I drive?” Asked Andrew.
“Do you’ve a license?” As his eldest shook his head, Cillian tilted his head. “Then the answer is no.”
“No, can I go to TJ’s house? He invited me to play video games.”
Cillian nodded and passed Ben’s jumper, after waving Scout goodbye, he left his youngest at his friend’s house and drove away with Andrew to Marianne’s place.
“Who did you get?”
“Marianne, she’s part of the cast of the play but she’s really, really good with numbers.” Cillian explained.
“Cool.” Was all his son had to say.
It was a short and quick drive, Cillian pulled in front of the townhouse, the property seemed to be remodeled and held several apartments independently.
After pressing the buzz, Marianne opened the door for them.
“Hello again, this is my kid Andrew… thanks for doing this by the way.”
“Dad I’m not a kid anymore. Hi.” Andrew looked at Marianne, making her swallow a gasp by the similarities with his father.
“Hey, please come in.” She welcomed them with a smile.
Cillian mimicked Andrew. “He can’t stand when I call him that.”
Suppressing a giggle, Marianne guided them towards the small kitchen. She decided to avoid commenting the obvious that they looked so alike. “So, your Dad says you’re studying applied mathematics?”
“Yeah but so don’t understand my teacher.”
“Oh before that, we brought hamburgers for dinn-” Cillian started to explain, but quickly found himself staring at the stove. “What’s this? Smells fantastic.”
“My special chicken.” Marianne explained, she had prepared it for the traditional tacos night with the girls the following day, but judging by Cillian’s glances, she thought of changing it. “You can have some if you want.”
He wanted to say no, it would be a terrible thing to take away her food, but the smell was incredible and by now it was evident, it was mouth-watering.
“It’s fine really, there’s enough.”
“I swear they’re good, but this looks and smells delicious.” Cillian praised again. “How about we exchange?”
“It’s fine really, there’s enough.”
“You sure?” Cillian asked again, to which Marianne replied with a nod.
“Would you like some too Andrew?” She asked looking at the boy.
“Nah, the burger is fine. Thanks.”
“Your loss ‘cos this is awesome.” Cillian shuddered taking another bite.
It felt somehow strange to have Cillian and his son in her kitchen.
“Did you know Marianne's studying her master in Finance?” He raised his eyebrows, making evident his admiration. “Trinity College.”
“Oh yeah? The campus is grand.” Andrew stated.
“It is, loads of buildings, but now I’m taking a hybrid method so I’m not always there.” Marianne explained before thanking Cillian for her dinner.
“Hmmm.” Cillian was lost for words, he never imagined the explosion of flavors in his mouth. “This is perfect.”
As Andrew excused himself to use the bathroom, Cillian continue praising her cooking skills.
“How have you been feeling?” He asked studying Marianne’s face, his gaze was penetrating.
“Everything’s fine, the new inhaler works like a charm.” She replied, getting busy with the dirty dishes.
“You could try going outside for a walk put all these trees to good use.” Cillian added taking the plates from her.
“Heidi told me I’ve to go to the Blarney Stone, I’m planning to visit on Sunday.” Cillian’s fingers brushed against hers accidentally, but it was enough to make her heart skip a beat.
He noticed a small blush in her skin, or it was the kitchen light perhaps? Why was this suddenly feeling like a perfect domestic scene?
“Just avoid kissing it please.” He made a disgusted face.
“Why? I’ll loose my good luck shot.”
“Just… don’t kiss it, trust me.”
“What? The Blarney rock?” Andrew laughed. “It’s full of piss… gross.”
“Andrew.” Cillian warned with his eyes and voice tone.
“Wha? ‘S true.”
“Are you guys serious?” Marianne asked in disbelief.
But after watching them nod profusely, Andrew told her locals usually pee on the stone among other disgusting things so she decided to trust in their words. And avoid kissing the stone at all costs.
While Cillian finished with the dishes, Andrew got his book and notebook.
“Oh I remember these.” Marianne took a moment to read through the notes and exercises. “Just let me grab my glasses. At this hour I can’t see without them.”
“No offense, but you sound just like my Da.”
Marianne laughed, but Cillian moved so quickly to slap his son in the back of his head.
As Andrew hissed and rubbed the spot with his hand, Marianne waved at Cillian.
“It’s fine, after you cross your thirties you’ll start making Dad jokes without even having kids and wear glasses too.”
Cillian smirked, pleased. “That was a nice comeback, smooth.”
Andrew groaned and shook his head.
“Okay let’s start with this example, you need to find the ‘x’ value. And differentiate 3x-7.” She read the first part of the instructions.
“But I only have ‘y’.” Andrew frowned confused.
“Yeah you’ll have to find that first and then use that value to find the ‘x’.” Marianne started working on her own sheet to show him, in a few short steps she solved the problem.
“Woah!”
Cillian chuckled from the living room where he had picked a book from Marianne’s shelves that caught his attention. Lying on the couch he watched the scene before his eyes, the domesticity at its finest and he felt so comfortable that the mere sensation from it forced to question himself if he was allowed to feel this good.
And his son was even smiling from solving the problems correctly. To him that mean everything.
Since he left the theater he hadn’t been able to stop the thoughts about Marianne and the positive impact she had brought along the way. He was constantly relying on her not only about his professional projects like the play or his production company, but on a personal level as well, she had seen him at his worst, on a negative attitude and managed to help him ground again. She had a very particular sense of humor and her face was so transparent that he could see every emotion there even when she wasn’t speaking. He also enjoyed way too much teasing her when she couldn’t get a word right.
If he could use one word about her, it was admiration, there was no other way to describe his feelings. Because seeing her on stage, transformed into this fearless character, dominating the entire theater with her presence in a foreign language when she didn’t have an acting background but she worked so hard so you wouldn’t notice that. It was something that slowly made him fall in love not only with theater again, but with her as well.
He had to admit her physical beauty attracted loads of attention, he had seen first hand the way people stared at her when they were out for a coffee or walking towards the theater, there was something about her that made you turn around or steal a glance and she didn’t seem to notice, she never seemed to be pretentious or rude to anyone. No, all the opposite she was always kind to everyone.
But could all of that transform or evolve from the daily interactions to something else? How would she feel if she knew that he was falling for her?
Endless questions had been on his mind lately, it was frustrating to not have the answers.
How could he be so sure that this was something genuine and not because they worked together?
How could he even start all over again in his personal life?
“There you go, be careful with the-,” she stopped talking as she saw Andrew answer by himself, “yes that’s correct.”
Leaning back on the chair, she looked in Cillian’s direction finding him laying on his back, on her couch as if he always belonged there. Dragging her eyes quickly from him before he could notice.
Lee’s words resonating in her mind over and over.
But looking at Andrew wasn’t much help because he looked just like his father in every possible way, the only difference was that he had short hair and less freckles and the other one was the colour of his eyes, as Andrew’s looked more like blue-grayish, but she could easily imagine this is what Cillian looked like when he was younger.
She needed to stop these feelings to grow further because they still had to hit the road with the play and by the end of the dates she would end up with a broken heart.
“How did I do?” Andrew asked pulling her away from her thoughts.
“Let’s see,” tilting her head she check over at the numbers, a soft smile appearing on her lips, “you did it!”
Offering Andrew a high five, she encouraged him to continue, helping the boy every now and then when he had questions but he did it mostly by himself.
“How’s it going?” Cillian asked joining them in the kitchen.
“I finished the work.” Andrew stood with pride oozing from him. “Thanks.”
“Thank you.” Cillian added looking into her eyes. “Really appreciate this.”
“Happy to help.” Marianne gave them a quick glance.
“I won’t see you tomorrow, will be around scouting for locations to film the video and arranging stuff.” Cillian took the keys of his car and handed them to his son.
“Oh… okay.” Marianne stammered adding a nod. Unsure of what to say.
“Can I drive?” Andrew looked at his Dad who was standing behind him, with his hands on his shoulders.
“Ya.”
“Grand!”
As Andrew stormed out from the flat with his belongings and the keys, Cillian hid his hands inside the pockets of his jeans.
“You saved me from a headache and him for his test.” Cillian picked on his lip nervously and forced Marianne to look in a different direction.
“You just want an excuse to keep me working.” She joked with a smile that reached her eyes.
“Of course, you don’t deserve a day off that’s why I asked for the tutoring tonight and then you appearing in the music video.” He replied in the same light tone as her.
“I was just kidding,” she assured him feeling like a fool, he probably just wanted to go home and she was trying to make small talk.
“Thanks for the budget by the way, it helped me a lot.”
She had already finished the budget for the rest of the year and managed to give him all the quotes to film the music video, she even added a small percentage for what she called the just-in-case. And the numbers looked good, the group’s manager approved it already.
Marianne nodded and added in a playful tone: “Someone has to keep your spending on track.”
“I’ll have to start thinking of the next project.” Cillian ran one of his hands through his curls.
“Enda mentioned you left the rehearsal early because you felt rubbish.” She loved using that term now. “How are you feeling?”
She asked a simple question oblivious to the real reason behind Cillian’s absence from the rehearsal. In her eyes, he found she was genuinely worried about him.
Leaning in with a smile, he kissed her cheek as goodbye. “Never been better.”
Cillian stared into her eyes for a few seconds, taking in the feeling he had been experiencing since they arrived there; for the first time he was able to see her properly without the veil of grief blurring his vision.

Welcome to the first ever Succession Dog Show
Contestants have been split into seven groups for the first of three rounds. The second round will have the same groups, with just the top three from the first round. Then the winner of each group will move on to the final round‚ which will also include special guest Mondale Roy. Also, Marcia is the judge because <3 and I say so.
In each group there are five succession characters plus three more normal dogs because I didn’t think five was enough and also I think it’s funny that it’s a possibility that none of the characters make it to the final round.
These polls all will last 1 week‚ closing and opening on Sundays.
Here are the Round 1 polls:
Herding Group
Hound Group
Non-Sporting Group
Sporting Group
Terrier Group
Toy Group

622: Angels Revenge
I would pay folding money for a half-hour gag reel of all the times Mike swung too hard or in the wrong direction or the wind was wrong and he took off Crow’s head.  It had to happen at least twice.  MST3K was not known for the sturdiness or sophistication of their props and we love them for it.
A fourteen-year-old boy steals some stuff from a drug dealer who looks an awful lot like Ben Murphy.  In revenge, Fake Ben Murphy and Actual Jack Palance beat the shit out of him. This upsets both the kid’s sister, an up-and-coming musician, and his schoolteacher, and they hatch a plot to destroy the drug depot.  They recruit a few friends – a Hollywood stuntwoman, a karate teacher, a model, a cop, and one of the teacher’s students – and steal some ammo from a bunch of neo-Nazis, and then it’s on to beat up the druggies!
I guess the idea behind this movie is fairly sound – a group of women get together to do a job the men aren’t willing to do.  The question of just why the men aren’t willing to do it is an open one.  Do the drug dealers own the police or something?  I dunno.  At the time it came out, Angels Revenge was panned as a ripoff of Charlie’s Angels, which it most unquestionably is, but there’s a reason that was a successful formula: women enjoy movies in which women kick ass, and men enjoy looking at boobs.  In the right hands, it would still have been a ripoff, but it could have been a much better ripoff.  Unfortunately, the grubby hands it got into were those of Greydon Clark.
The opening of this movie is a series of annoying missteps. A group of women we do not know (we’re not even sure how many there are) invade a gas station in the middle of nowhere and start blowing stuff up.  Their names are given in the opening shot but not in a way that makes them memorable. One character apparently dies, the others go on without her, and then she reappears to save the day.  None of this makes much of an impression beyond ‘oh, look, tits’, but we can tell they’re trying to get into the main building.  We get into it just enough that we want to see what’s inside, and then bam. Freeze-frame, narration.
The time for this would have been about five minutes earlier. Seriously, this ‘action opening’, obviously patterned after things like James Bond, goes on for five minutes at least in which we don’t really know what’s happening or who any of these characters are.  If we had just one to focus on that might help, but we’re watching six or seven of them run around doing different things and we don’t even know what their plan is so we can’t tell if it’s going right or wrong.  The whole sequence should have been either massively cut down to just enough to tell us action is happening before it goes into the flashback, or just moved in its entirety to its proper place later in the narrative.
Then when we finally do start meeting the characters, the first one we meet is not the one who began narrating a moment earlier!  It’s the beat-up kid’s sister, the one who so-far looked like she was in charge. Finding out she’s secondary in the whole plot is a bit of whiplash, and as far as I can tell the main purpose of the Vegas sequence (besides showing us her midriff) is to give a cameo to Arthur Godfrey as himself.
From there the rest of the characters are introduced and we finally find out who the hell they all are and what they bring to the table.  April, the teacher, is the mastermind. Michelle, the singer, is the backer. Terry, the stuntwoman, is their engineer.  Keiko, the karate teacher, is the hand-to-hand fighter.  Maria, the model, is a distraction.  Elaine, the cop, is the tactician.  And Trish, the student, is… uh… somebody wanted a kid in this movie. The point is, if you go back and watch the opening sequence after the bit where everybody’s introduced, it’s much more involving and makes infinitely more sense!  They could have had five minutes of action, but they gave us five minutes of boredom just by putting it in the wrong spot!
After some of the movies I’ve see, incidentally, it is a point very much to this movie’s credit that I remember everybody’s names.  Well done, Angels Revenge!
That does not, however, outweigh the many other things the movie does badly.  The actresses are mere eye candy, hired for their looks and not for their talent.  They stand around in ‘sexy’ poses without bras on, and recite their lines like they’re in an eighth-grade play.  Even so, they’re better than the men, who are just as bad at acting but aren’t distractingly nice to look at.  The best actor in the entire movie is Alan Hale Jr and he’s only got about three lines.
Then there are the bits where the movie tries to be funny.  The Neo-Nazis are supposed to be funny, which I’m honestly okay with – Hitler hated being made fun of and so it’s the responsibility of all right-thinking citizens to mock him and his movement whenever possible.  But they aren’t funny, just a bunch of fat clumsy guys with Hitler mustaches.  I don’t know how people who make movies fail to understand that in order to be funny, characters have to do funny things.  Both the Neo-Nazis and other ‘comic’ male characters in the movie are presented simply as ‘lol, men are oafs, right girls?’ without any attempt at an actual punchline.
Another running gag is April, who insists she’s a Very Organized Person, and her over-full purse.  That’s not really funny, but I can’t argue with it.  Two years ago I bought a bag big enough to hold my knitting and I haven’t seen the bottom of it since.  Someday I’ll be rooting around for something, fall in, and end up in Narnia.
The sequence in which they rob the Nazis does provide some action and acts as a trial run to show us the women can work together successfully.  But we already saw that in the out-of-place opening sequence, so it’s not really establishing anything we didn’t already know.  The fact that we’ve also seen what comes after also tells us that they will succeed at this mission with nobody getting hurt (not that these idiots they’re robbing are in any way a threat), and sucks all the suspense out.  Man, the longer I think about it, the more ways in which that opening makes the movie worse!  Whose idea was that anyway?
The characters are stereotypes, boring at best and deeply offensive at worst. The black woman is six feet tall and works on vehicles, because black women are butch!  The Asian girl knows martial arts and uses a katana, because she’s Asian (and although she’s said to be from Vietnam, she has a Japanese name… it’s possible to come up with a backstory for her that incorporates this, but that’s not my job as an audience member)!  The white women are bitches and bimbos, more distinguishable by their hair than by their personalities.  April is presented as ‘the mousy one’ simply by not wearing lipstick on a heist.
I guess by having tough women and weak men, the writers thought they were being feminist, or at least appealing to feminists, but that’s not how feminism works on any level.  Strength and intelligence isn’t pizza – you getting an extra slice doesn’t mean I don’t get one.  Portraying the male antagonists as buffoons is actually deeply misogynistic, because it suggest that women can’t even play unless the men are idiots.  The point of feminism is that women are people just as much as men are, and deserve to be treated as such – by other women, by men, and by screenwriters.
Let me illustrate with an example from the opposite extreme: Elinor and Marianne Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility are sisters who each need to get married for the sake of their financial security. That might seem a very sexist premise for a story – and it is, but only because it takes place in a sexist culture. Elinor and Marianne have distinct personalities and different ideas of what makes a happy marriage, and they make decisions as individuals, not simply because they are ‘women’.  Each makes her own mistakes and learns her own life lessons, and the narrative explores what society has taught them to expect out of life versus the less romantic reality.  They are two human beings.  The characters in Angels Revenge, by contrast, are a bunch of pretty props.
It would have been so easy to make something actually enjoyable out of Angels Revenge.  As I noted above, it uses a successful formula and it really could have been a fun little piece of exploitation cinema.  Every decision made along the way, however, seems designed to sabotage it.  It’s badly-written, lifeless, cliched, racist, and based on a fundamental misunderstanding of feminism.  They hired women with no acting experience to play the main characters, and can’t decide which of those characters is our heroine. And of course, they edited it together in the wrong order, confusing and boring us and undermining what should have been important and suspenseful scenes.  This sort of thing just leaves me frustrated and annoyed.  You’re making a movie, people!  Could you not put a little fucking effort in?!

Super Short TV Reviews: Fall / Winter part two
Dare Me (USA) – A great Lifetime that somehow ended up on USA.  The creator was obviously madly in love with Friday Night Lights but wanted to show things from the Cheerleaders perspective.  Your new favourite nasty YA not guilty pleasure.
The Politician (Net) – Ben Platt was hilarious in the Pitch Perfect movies, and brilliantly endearing on Broadway in Dear Evan Hansen.  He combines both qualities in this Ryan Murphy creation – a joyful ode to dark comedy a la Heathers or Election.  Im telling you, it’s funny.
Deputy (Fox) – This show would have you believe that if you put a green colour wash on Los Angeles County it ends up a lot like the wild west.  Ummmm... no.   The fun part is you may now be curious to know what parts of Los Angeles County are not actually the city of Los Angeles.  At least, that was the only fun part for me.
Marianne (Net) – France.  OOOOOOOO creeepy.  All the best makings of a really good horror movie except this is a series so it will take a loooooooooot loooooooooonger to watch.   But if you have low blood pressure and like suspense you will dig it.  Mireille Herbtsmeyer is equally funny and terrifying as the possibly-possessed-byMarianne sea towny eccentric.
FBI:  Most Wanted (CBS) – For people who cut the cord and only get local antennae channels.  Your typical CBS fare.  Like a salad with lemon slice instead of dressing.   So you add a lot of croutons.  And blue cheese.  And then its not really a salad anymore.  I’ve always liked Julian McMahon but this show is boring.
Limetown (Facebook) –  Based on the podcast but this is NOT a true story.  So don’t be thinking this is your next true crime obsession, cuz it’s not.  What it IS though, is a well made fictional seemingly paranormal mystery... but be warned.  It was already cancelled so I’m not sure how many story answers yer gonna get from the show... (but maybe it’s in the podcast?)
Party of Five (Freeform) – Good substitute if you’ve been missing the Fosters.  I don’t know what the setup for the 90s series was, but this one has 2 parents who are hauled off by immigration leaving five siblings to fend for themselves.  And one is a baby.  So that’s realistic.  And hopefully not encouraging to any 13-year-old watching!!
Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for Bone Collector (NBC) – No thanks.  I already watch a serial killer show and its got Lou Diamond Phillips.
Sanditon on Masterpiece Theatre (PBS) – Theo James!  In britches!  A hit.  Based on the unfinished book by Jane Austin.  Lots of great British and Irish actors abound.
Whiskey 68 (Paramount) – Not the worst or best military show Ive ever seen... plenty of colourful characters and soap opera drama... Im sure plenty of antics do occur on base overseas, but I’m not sure I quite understand the message or tone of this show.
9-1-1: Lone Star (Fox) – Austin has fires and disasters too!  And Rob Lowe.  And Liv Tyler.  And the super sweet guy from True Blood (Jim Parrack.)  And better bars and music!!  Another win for FOX.
Raising Dion (Net) – Your new favourite family show.  Ja’Siah Young is ADORABLE as Dion, and Jason Ritter is always a welcome addition to anything.   Alisha Wainwright handles things a lot better than I would if I turned around one day and my son had super powers.  And what the heck is going on with Michael B. Jordan and the – oops!  No spoilers. Binge watch for sure.
Vienna Blood (PBS) – Basically a British period piece that happens to take place in turn of the century Vienna (which is a nice change of setting if you’ve watched a lot of British period pieces.)  Really weird pairing between the grumpy older cop, and the younger (looks like he’s 19) doctor, but it somehow works really well.  In 1907 Vienna, its new – the whole idea of getting into the killers head, or as the first episode titles it, “the psychopathy of the human mind.”   Based on the Max Liebermann book series by Frank Tallis.
Bonus:  Forky Asks a Question (Disney+) – just watch the CHAIROL Burnett one.  Bwaaaahahahaha!
NOT REVIEWED:
The Unlisted (Netflix) – Australia.
Dublin Murders (Starz)
the Family Man (Amazon) – India.
Bard of Blood (Net) – India.  Spies.
Cheat (Sundance Now)
When the Camellia Blooms (Netflix) – Korea.
Balthazar (Acorn)
Team Kaylie (Netflix) – for kids.
The L Word: Generation Q (Showtime)
Skylines (Netflix) – Germany.
Work In Progress (Showtime)
The I-Land (Netflix)
The Gulf (Sundance Now)
The Spy (Net) – story of real life Israeli spy.
Undone (Amazon) – super cool animation.  At times looks real.
My Country: The New Age (Net) – Korea.  Warriors.

Look at the soul - Part 8 Count on me
Cillian Murphy x OC
Series masterlist
Song: Count on me by Bruno Mars
As usual, we meet new characters 🥰 thank you SO much for your support, for your thoughts and feedback, it means everything 💕
Tumblr media
“I won this time.” Cillian approached Marianne after rehearsal, she was sitting in the front row with her laptop on her lap.
“Hey, yeah… someone decided to ask a million questions today and I couldn’t get out earlier.” She explained with a worried expression.
“It’s alright, we need to remember your studies are a priority.”
“But I asked around and apparently, I can change my program to study in a hybrid method, like half my credits online half in the classroom, so I filled a form and they’ll check my status to see if I can fit the program, they’re starting it and only had like two or three students sign up.”
“That’s incredible! I hope you can make the change, but are you sure it won’t mess up with your studies?” He wondered how she’d be able to keep up with everything.
“No, because it’s the same program, professors, well all of it, that way I can have more free time to do it all.”
Cillian crossed his arms. “And what about your tests?”
If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea
I'll sail the world to find you
“I’d take them online as well as the courses.”
“But how? You don’t have to be in the classroom?” He just couldn’t picture it.
“Technically no, they upload the test with four or five possible answers and you get your score right away.” She explained.
Cillian lifted his hands in a surrender motion. “Maybe I’m just too old for this.” He chuckled.
“What? That’s ridiculous… you’re not old.” Marianne shook her head.
“Can’t you see the white hairs?” He huffed taking the seat next to her.
“I have friends younger than me with their entire head white, that has nothing to do with age.” Suddenly she was aware of the masculine scent emanating from Cillian. He was too close. “Anyways let me show you this, I made a budget for the rest of the year so you can use for the different projects.”
As she started to show him a few tools, he was in awe of the information for him; graphics, proposals for the new equipment, an analysis cost-benefit of the upcoming projects, this was mind blowing!
“How the hell can you do that?” He asked squinting his eyes, a deep frown showing.
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see
I'll be the light to guide you
“What?”
“That thing, when you show me one thing and then another.”
Switching from one file to another, Marianne showed him what buttons she pressed. He made it seem as if she was doing a magic trick.
“Now, if you want to consider buying the equipment overseas, I made this.” She showed him another analysis comparing the investment.
“Wow, this is super organized!” He admitted leaning back looking from the screen to her surprised. “I’m speechless.”
“I tried to make it easy to digest.”
“Thank you, it seems like we both have good news then.”
Marianne saved the document and looked up at Cillian as he stood up.
“Now, come on stage cause I want you to see something.”
“What is it?”
Cillian was pleased to hold it between his hands.
“Guess?” But she couldn’t imagine. “I just got the first printed poster for the promo.” Cillian unfolded the paper carefully and took a few steps back so she could see it completely.
“That’s amazing!” Lee praised joining them on stage, excited to see how everything was developing on time. “Can I take a picture?”
Cillian nodded and raised the poster above his head so it would cover his face.
“What do you think?” He asked moving the paper a bit down, so now only his eyes were poking over it.
Marianne took a moment to register the image, it felt surreal. “I can’t believe this.”
Her green eyes sparkled under the bright lights of the theater. It was one of the photos Cillian took from her as the two roles that represented Adria, looking straight to the camera it was the fearless woman in the red dress in contrast with the woman in the reflection of the mirror with a sad look in her eyes, vulnerable, hit by life over and over.
It was hard to imagine it was the same woman of the script, not only by the character’s differences, but because Cillian had been able to capture Adria’s essence and the gaze from each character when in reality it was the same woman.
We'll find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need
“It was a good idea ask you to take the photos.” Enda approached them, taking the poster from Cillian’s hands.
“You just did that so you didn’t have to hire and pay for a photographer.” Cillian laughed.
His lifetime pal was right though. “Yeah, but you did a fine work either way.”
Hiding his hands inside the back pockets of his jeans, Cillian looked down. “All credit belongs to Adria.”
Marianne immediately jumped in. “Ah non of that, you were the one making magic with the camera.”
“Right, I’m going to check the sound again, it was horrible today.” Enda adjusted his glasses on his nose and walked away. Once he was out of their sight, Cillian took the permanent marker from his pocket and handed it to Marianne.
“I’ve to be the first one,” Cillian gave her a smile, “can you sign it for me?”
She was beyond surprised, speechless even. His request took her by surprise.
“It should be the other way around, isn’t it?” She raised her eyebrows. “Me asking you for an autograph?”
“Look, as much as I enjoyed portraying a woman in a film, this is a character I’d never be able to play. And unfortunately for you, it’s not my face in the poster, so you’re the one who needs to sign it.” He carefully put the paper on the table in front of them.
“I’ve never signed anything… what do you write?” She looked up at him for guidance.
“Just my initials a circle or a line or whatever…” he chuckled, “but don’t do that, write something nice.”
“Well in that case, I’ll need to take my time to get inspired.” She added with a dramatic hint.
But a phone call interrupted their chat, it was Selene, her classmate, so she moved a few steps away to talk to her. Cillian was trying to define what was happening, because her facial expressions were full of worry.
“Everything alright?” He asked when Marianne approached him again.
“No, we’ve to do a project in teams, but one of the members just let my classmate know he was quitting school, wanted to travel the world and then work in his father’s company.” She sighed frustrated.
“Fuck.” Cillian tried to understand the way she felt.
“My thoughts exactly, now Selene and I have to do everything.”
“What’s your project about? Can I help you in any way?”
You can count on me like one, two, three
I'll be there
She felt a rush of adrenaline, they had very little time to complete the assignment. “We’ve to build a business case about well… a business, doesn’t matter the category, explain the process to the classroom and propose different goals and alternatives to reach them.”
Cillian looked at her trying to figure out a way to help. “Can you use my production agency? My secretary must’ve the monthly balances.”
His proposal made her nod eagerly. “Yes because I could include the investment you did on the play as part of the company to show some way of expansion.”
And I know when I need it, I can count on you like four, three, two
And you'll be there
“Then it’s all set… tell me what you need.”
That’s when Marianne’s smile faded away. “I’d have to ask you for an interview, or you can tell me whoever I can talk to, it doesn’t matter my professor isn’t going to corroborate the authenticity of the job position.”
He realized she was mortified. “It’s no big deal, I’m happy to help.”
We'll find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need
“Oh my God, thank you! Thank you, it’s only a few questions and it can be just by voice.”she felt at ease when Cillian smiled. “When would you like to schedule it?”
“Right now? Unless you’re busy with something else.”
Marianne could barely hide her excitement, this was extremely important for her and it meant the world that he was willing to help her. “Yes, whenever you can.”
“I‘ll see you kids tomorrow, have a boring meeting with the PR.” Enda waved at them and walked away.
“How about we go to the studio? So you can see where everything is done.” Cillian then asked, taking his jacket from the seat.
“Sure, I promise you it’ll be quick.”
As they moved to the studio, the conversation flowed naturally.
“The other day I was walking down the street, on my way to buy some groceries and I found a little antique shop, there was a beautiful painting, but it was listed as if it was a Rembrandt or a Van Gogh and of course I couldn’t afford it, or I wouldn’t have anything to eat for the rest of the course,” she laughed and the sound caught Cillian’s attention, because it was one of those genuine laughs, “so I showed Lee the picture I took of the painting and she’s doing a replica for me!”
“Really? That’s incredible, I didn’t know she could paint.”
“She’s very artistic, you guys did a great job taking the photos for the promotion of the play.”
Cillian nodded, it was easy to work with her because their ideas matched. “It’s like talent comes naturally in different areas.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I know about copyright and all, but in the art world the prices go out of proportion. And I fell in love with the paint.”
“I can assure you, you’re not the first nor the last one to do it, beside if it ended in an antique store, the original owner didn’t care much about it.”
“That makes me think of the one that got destroyed at an auction.”
“Bansky right?” He immediately recalled watching it on the news, as it was destroyed by a hidden shredder inside the frame. “That was crazy.”
“It was beautiful, simple, but beautiful.” She expressed moving her hair back, a hint of orchids filled the air around him, filling his nostrils. “The little girl, reaching for a balloon that’s floating away…”
“Wonder what was the artist’s intention to do such thing, it’s something stupid right?” He felt comfortable express his thoughts to her.
Marianne shuddered. “Unconventional would be the best way to describe him.”
“Doesn’t makes sense.” He added holding the door open for her. “Nothing makes actually.” The sound of his phone interrupted their chat, Cillian pressed the button to answer, listening to the man at the other end. “So that date works for you?”
Marianne noticed the huge grin on his face as he was humming.
“Alright man, I gotta start scouting locations around and I already have the general idea, the demo is fantastic!” Another pause and he indicated her to turn to her right in the corner. “Talk to you later, thanks Danny.”
Cillian sighed pleased with the information he just got, and turned his head to look at her through his Ray Bans.
“We just signed to produce a music video for a rock band I like, it’s a great hit.”
Marianne now understood his smile. “Congratulations! That’s some great news!”
“Thank you, is a good opportunity.” He was excited about it, but decided to not ask her yet to get involved in the project, not yet.
Arriving at the studio he showed her around first, the cabin where they recorded, the sound machine, it felt like his second man cave.
“Would you like to read the questions first?” She already had a draft, so it was easier to adjust the questionnaire to his business.
Cillian frowned. “No, just shot.”
She chuckled and placed her cellphone between them, setting the recording app. “Starting in three, two, one.”
“Action!” He joked.
“Mr. Murphy could you tell us a little bit about how you started this business?”
“The Mister part made me feel old, can you cut it off?”
Marianna suppressed a small giggle but nodded at him.
“Hi Cillian, thank you for accepting this quick talk, could you tell us about how you started this business?”
Cillian adjusted on his seat and looked up at the silence sign in the corner. “I love my job, but somewhere down the road I stumbled across being behind the scenes, as I started learning what’s happening in the background, th-the things we don’t see on screen, I fell in love with that part of the process.” He looked at her intensely. “But I’m always in one corner, I care too much or I don’t at all,” he chuckled, “so I decided to explore that side of the business because I had a lot of free time and I was a good part of the day in the studio anyways with my stuff. So I talked about it with a couple of friends who are experts in their fields and they were happy to jump in this ship.”
“Can you elaborate a little about your main projects?”
“Yeah, we finance and produce independent films, advertisements, records…”
“That’s amazing, the magic behind the scenes…”
He gave her a genuine smile.
“What was the biggest challenge you faced? The struggle that almost made you quit?”
Cillian leant his body forwards, towards her, one of his hands over his thigh.
“People not believing in my dream, saying it was just one of my hobbies. But it’s always being like that, you know? People never take you seriously until you make it.”
“I’ve seen some of the projects and it’s mind blowing.”
“You’ve?” He asked surprised.
Marianne nodded. “I was curious about the audiobook you recorded and I listened it until like two or three in the morning. I also loved the promo video you did of local food in Ireland, it was mouthwatering. I wanted to take a bite of each plate.” She laughed.
Cillian was taken a back by her words, he didn’t know she had been so involved with his company to the point of seeing the projects. And he rarely got a compliment over it because he was usually behind the scenes.
“I take every project seriously, love being involved in every little detail to be able to deliver a good quality work.”
“What’s next for you?”
“There’s a video already in post production about tourism in the country, the finest places to visit, the hidden little gems… it’s beautiful. We’ll present it to the client in a few weeks and there’s another one I’m particularly excited about, but unfortunately due to confidential agreement I can’t share more at the moment, but it’s about music.”
As they finished working on the questionnaire, Marianne told him she would call Selene, to let her know the interview was done.
“Can I use your laptop in the meantime? I’ll be quick.”
Marianne already had her phone next to her ear, so she nodded before trying to reach her classmate.
As Cillian opened the icon to search, he found her email open already, his eyes were glued in one in particular.
Change of medication?
Cillian moved up to close the tab, but his fingers hesitated. He didn’t mean to intrude in her personal email account, but it caught his attention.
Feeling a rush of guilt, he looked over his shoulder to make sure Marianne was out of sight. But curiosity won him over, he really needed to know why would she need another medication since she never mentioned being sick.
There wasn’t a lot of information, at least it wasn’t clear, she just mentioned feeling her chest tight at times during the night and that she couldn’t exercise because she felt short of breath. The doctor answered he was out of town for a couple of days but would schedule her once he got back.
He also mentioned she should go back to her previous medication and look after any other alarm sign she could notice.
Cillian stared at the screen for a moment, he couldn’t see a signature or phone number. And it wasn’t clear if she was getting any better. Clicking finally on the red x at the top corner, he felt a vein in his temple starting to pulse.
Was her sickness something serious?
Should he worry about her health condition?
“All set, she will take care of the analysis and proposals for the project and I can work on the business case,” Marianne came back with a smile, oblivious of his thoughts. “I was thinking of using the play as my baseline, you’re super involved in the project and I could easily make it fit as one of the ways to expand your company, sorry I’m talking too much.”
Cillian looked into her eyes, debating between asking Marianne directly or not.

Next part
A/N: Still with the slow burn… but I promise you, there will be some action, can you feel them more integrated? Let me know!

The Party dir. Sally Potter (2017)
Tumblr media
I have had mixed experiences with Sally Potter but she has always been a wonderful, bold and inventive director so I had no hesitation watching her latest film, The Party, which turned out to be a great decision. It’s somewhat surprising to me that this got a theatrical release because it’s barely over 60 minutes, but the short running time makes this a lean mean enjoyable film that uses its running time perfectly.
The film was written pre-Brexit (apparently the actual Brexit results came through in the middle of filming), but nevertheless the whole movie certainly has a very timely post-Brexit feel. The film centres around a group of 7 all white middle aged friends who are gathering for an intimate dinner party to celebrate Janet (Kristen Scott Thomas) who has just become shadow minister for health. In attendance is her husband Bill (Timothy Spall), her best friend April (Patricia Clarkson, hilarious), April’s German healer husband Gottfried (Bruno Ganz), Bill’s best friend Martha (Cherry Jones), her wife Jinny (Emily Mortimer), and Tom (Cillian Murphy), the husband of Bill’s protégé who arrives solo, without his wife, Marianne.
Potter wastes no time, throwing the messiness of the characters’ lives straight at us. Janet is basking in her success and having a secret affair, Bill is silent and acting weird, April is neurotic and doesn’t bother to hide her absolute disgust with her placid spiritual husband Gottfried loudly telling him to shut up, Martha is less than thrilled when Jinny announces that their attempts at IVF have succeeded and she is now pregnant with triplets. Meanwhile an erratic Tom keeps sneaking off to the bathroom to snort coke, give himself pep talks and lovingly fondle the gun he has brought to the gathering. It’s all a lot of fun, but a lot of fun with substance. Potter is a feminist who has always been interested in issues of class, artistic merit, and gender relations. All those elements are on display here as she navigates the hypocrisy of these wealthy characters, feminists who have sold out in a certain sense for power, artistic liberals looking down on white collar moneymakers, women suddenly and abruptly coming to the realization that they can’t have a devoted spouse, an amazing career AND children (or maybe that they don’t want those things), and even tackling the NHS (that would be the National Health Service, the UK’s health care system) which Janet has just promoted to defend yet will quickly abandon when it comes to her and her family.
All the actors are wonderful here too. Mainstream Hollywood film is youth obsessed and the indie scene is often no better. What a relief then that The Party is focused exclusively on the petty jealousies of a middle aged (and older) crowd. It’s wonderful to see veteran actors with well worn lines on their faces flex their muscles and portray people who are sickeningly familiar with each other. And (sadly) it’s a huge but wonderful shock to see 4 actresses, all over 40, get to act with one another. Patricia Clarkson steals the show with a lot of achingly funny lines, but Kristen Scott Thomas is wonderful as well as are Cherry Jones and Emily Mortimer as a married couple involved in their own side drama.
The film feels a bit like a glorified play (except for the opening shot which is a tease of the end of the film the entire movie is set in real time). I mean that only in the best possible way. While sometimes people use the “feels like a play” criticism to mean that a movie feels stiff and false, Potter’s film feels warm and alive. It also cements Potter once again in my mind as one of the most easy to watch experimental directors. While some directors find a style and stick to it, Potter is constantly playing with form and function in a way the feels freeing every time I watch something she’s made. The choice to set The Party in one location in real time adds tension in a way that is fun and also works for the story.
If there’s one criticism to be had it’s that Potter’s film doesn’t quite get zany enough. The film ends abruptly just over an hour after it started and while it’s remarkable that Potter managed to give all 7 characters enough screen time to make them feel fully human, it also feels like a bit of a tragedy to leave them just as things are about to get truly wild.

11 Questions
I got tagged in a bunch of these, so I’m doing them in one go XD
@aliteraryprincess‘s questions
What was your most anticipated book of 2018?  Did it live up to your expectations? Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor!!! And yes, it did. I thought it was amazing, great book and great conclusion.
What’s your first read of 2019? Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee
Any favorite TV shows based on books? I’m more about comic books becoming tv series. I was into The 100 for a while, but I dropped it in season 3.
What was the last book you read in translation? Oh, The Mulatto maybe? It’s a short story and I’m pretty sure it was originally written in French. I liked it a lot and it was about slavery and a low key thriller.
If you could have a pet from any book/series, what would you want? Okay, so he’s not a pet, he is Sylvie’s best friend, but Ebon from Pegasus. Because I will always want a pegasus bff.
Are there any genres that you never read? I say horror, but I read the more psychological stuff. And I rarely read non fiction, but I will read it every now and then. I keep saying I’ll never read New Adult again, but I keep getting intrigued by the synopsis and I’m always disappointed.
Do you have a favorite classic? Anne of Green Gables is a classic, right? Cause that’s my favorite. But I like quite a few.
What book-to-movie adaptation would you completely remake?  Why? Percy Jackson!!! Although, I’d just record the musical, which was brilliant on 18 different levels. The movie completely missed the point of the books, misinterpreted all the characters, and  the plot made no sense??? Musial was much better.
What was your least favorite read of 2018? Enemies Like These by PK Gardner, maybe? It was painful to read.
Are there any authors whose books you automatically buy no matter what? Brigid Kemmerer and Sarah Rees Brennan.
What was the last book you bought? I don’t buy many books. I either get them at book sales or on a rare treat. I usually go to the library. But I think it was .69 for the complete collection of Anne of Green Gables as an e collection. Or the short story Atoning by Kelley Armstrong, spin off to Darkest Powers. Can’t remember which I bought first. Unless you want to count books I buy for school. Then The Last September, which I never read.
@booklisted‘s questions
1. Who do you always trust to give you book recommendations? My mom XD. Although are tastes have started to differ more as I have gotten older.
2. What do you look for in a bookstore? I don’t go to book stores. And theres only one local one and it’s . . . fine. But I don’t trust BAM.
3. What is a book you loved as a child, only to go back to it as an adult and not like? Turns out baby me and adult me see eye to eye on most books. This wasn’t when I was a child per se, but I did like House of Night when I first read it and now I hate it. The whole series is ridiculous. I read EIGHT of them, what a waste of time.
4. What is a book you thought you were going to hate, but then were surprised by? Hmmm, most classics I like. I didn’t expect to love The Storyteller as much as I do. Thought it was going to be predictable fluff.
5. What book did you identify with most strongly as a teenager? Like, every other book I picked up.
6. Did you have phases of reading certain types of books growing up? Describe them! I haven’t outgrown any reading phases. I still love fantasy, children’s and YA. I just keep expanding them.
7. Have you ever received a book as a present or recommendation which you didn’t like? Did you tell the person? Pretty sure yes. But I can’t think of any examples.
8. Have you met any of your favourite authors? If so, who? I met V E Schwab at a book signing. She was nice.
9. If you are reading something written originally in a different language, how much do you care about the translation/translator? A lot!!! I started this one book, The Book Jumper. The translation was sloppy and stiff and choppy. It felt like a child wrote it. I couldn’t read more than a few chapters. The Storyteller was stunningly translated, straight up lyrical. Very easy to read and I got lost in the writing. Pretty sure they were both German too.
10. What is the strangest book you’ve ever read? Hm. I want to say The Dust of 100 Dogs by A. S. King. It was about a girl who was cursed to live 100 lives as a dog before she could be human again. Most of it was her 102nd life when she was a girl again. She referenced her past lives, and went to search for her treasure and her hopefully reincarnated boyfriend. Not bad. But strange.
11. One book you would give a 12y/o child to read? One??? Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City by Kristen Miller cause it’s amazing and most people give 12 year olds books about boys and a lot of the same ones over and over.
@thereadingchallengechallenge‘s questions
What’s your favourite book at the moment? I always go back to The Name of the Wind
Did you read all the books you wanted to in 2018? Lol NOPE
Did you discover any new favourite authors or books this year?
Any book recommendations? We could be here all day, just check myy-book-recs tag for more detailed recs.
What’s your favourite fairy tale? Probs Beauty and the Beast
Are you looking forward to any new releases? Brigid Kemmerer’s new book
What genre do you read the most? YA cause I can’t stop
What’s your favourite book-to-movie adaptation? Stardust cause I like the movie more. And To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
Any reading or book-related goals for 2019? My goodreads challenge is like 70 books.
What do you think will be your last read of 2018? It was Dumplin
Have you read any books by Australian authors? Yes, Marianne Curley who wrote the Guardians of Time. A few others, but I forget them now.
@darkestwings‘s questions
Do you have any pets? Nope
What is your favorite thing about winter? SNOW!!! COLD!!!! BLANKETS!!!! COCO!!!!
What was the last book you read? Puddin’ by Julie Murphy
Talk about a fictional character who inspires you. Recently, Millie from Puddin’. She is so motivated and organized and determined and optimistic. I adored her!!!
What is your number one pet peeve? I don’t know, so many things. Chewing with your mouth open bothers me to no end
What is something you are proud of? . . . I can cook okay and bake better.
Share some good advice you have received. It’s okay to fail
What is the last thing you bought (not counting groceries)? Movie tickets to Mary Poppins Returns
Share the most useless piece of trivia you know. Dolly Parton was inspired to write “I Will Always Love You” after she wanted to leave a business relationship. Also, Elvis wanted the rights to the song but wasn’t willing to give her royalties. Whitney Housten made a much better deal, both crediting her and bringing the song to new levels.
What was your first job? I volunteered at a library
What rating system do you use for books? Five stars but I just kind of wing it. I’m not crazy consistent.

tagged by nancy @pavlovers thank ya darlin
Name: Diana
Star Sign: Taurus, but it’s not really a thing I think much about
Height: 5′7
Put your playlist on shuffle. What are the first four songs to come up?
Good Times - the Rolling Stones
Black Swan - the Struts
Ten Cents a Dance - Anita O’Day
If I Were a Blackbird - Delia Murphy
Ever had a poem or song written about you?
Not that I know of, but that’d be cool.
Edit: OH WAIT I’M SO STUPID YES I HAVE. I remember now. It was. A person. That’s all I’ll say.
When was the last time you played guitar?
Not in over a year. It used to be one of my favorite hobbies (not that I was ever much better than average at it). I don’t really have the quiet space in my house for it, I used to just play at school when I could take classes for free. I would stay after school and get a practice room and just jam, it was nice. I miss it.
Who is your celebrity crush?
I don’t keep a list or anything but the most obvious ones from this blog are probably Ryan Ross and Marianne Faithfull. But I’ve had countless over the years. It almost feels like an injustice not to list more but alas... I don’t want to.
What’s a sound you love? What’s a sound you hate?
Sounds I love: the rain at night, harp music, my grandmother’s accent, the little pitter patter of my dogs’ feet on the floor.
Sounds I don’t love so much: people chewing food, synth music (most of the time), nails on a chalkboard, Brendon Urie singing High Hopes because it’s the worst song he’s ever recorded and I rant in the car to Kaily about this every time it comes on the radio.
Do you believe in ghosts?
More or less. I try not to really think about it or judge other people’s spiritual beliefs or lack thereof. If there are any ghosts reading my blog, DM me.
How about aliens?
Probably, and I hope they’re worse than we are.
Do you drive?
I don’t do anything, my dear.
What was the last book you read?
In full, or just excerpts? Currently I’m Act III in the Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, and it’s the first non-poetry book I’ve read from since I started school again in September. Before that, I think the last thing I finished was either Hamlet or Pride and Prejudice. And between that I’ve been mainly reading from these volumes of poetry here. Oh, and some short stories by Oscar Wilde. And some of the early 60s-70s Sabrina the Teenage Witch comics because I bought an omnibus of her first 10 years of publication in Florida, back in February, for, like, $10, and they’re really brief, usually about 4 pages.
Do you like the smell of gasoline?
No, but I like the smell of lit matches quite a lot.
What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had?
When I was seventeen I had a botched spinal tap. It was... awful. Six needles went into my back the wrong way. I couldn’t stand up for like 4 days and I had to go back to the emergency room, and the traffic on the way to Boston was ridiculous, but being propped up in the front seat of my mom’s car had too much light on my forehead, and just. Being upright. Hurt. For like, 45 minutes.
Do you have any obsessions right now?
Whatever it is I’m talking about, at any moment, just assume I’m obsessed with it. But the one that rules my life the most is poetry. Reading and writing it. Thinking about it. It’s just a constant stream of beats in my brain and when people talk to me I hear it like I’m listening to a poem and I cling onto every single word and think about its significance. Poetry, more than any other interest I’ve ever had, has fundamentally changed how I’m wired as a thinker and a human being.
Do you tend to hold grudges against people who have done you wrong?
I suppose there aren’t many people in my life who’ve done me truly wrong. I never had enough friends to be terribly betrayed by any of them. And then there’s family, and there are definitely family members I have who’ve done me wrong in a serious way, and I do remember it. It does color my perception of them. But you don’t pick your family. And I know them all too well to hold much against them, without contrasting it to the rest of what I know about their character. They’re not the most outstanding people in the world, no, but I’m just not too harsh a judge in the first place. I don’t know, I’m not too close, emotionally, to many of them anyway.
In a relationship?
Gray-aromantic asexual.
Alright uhhh I’ll tag @sneez, @nospoonsgiven, @shecomesincolors, @mylittlehappy, @aliceic, @toomcflyforawhiteguy, @buddyhollyscurls, and @laurenthelyricist if you guys are interested.

Hi all! I nearly wrote June in the title haha How’s YOUR day going? I said in the last What I Watched that I wanted to change up the format of these reviews. I’m not doing away with them – because I love to share about what I watched and if I liked it or not, but writing everything out and what not just made me tired 😂
So let’s try out this new format! And (trying) to write less. It might change from this post to the end-of-month WIW but hopefully for the better!

Always loved this movie – well, all 3 movies actually. Will definitely watch the other two later in the month
The Mummy 5 ⚰️ 🐪
Rewatch for the billionth time seriously. And I will keep watching it and rewatching. Because it’s everything I could possibly wan in a movie – also a big big reason why I wanted to become a librarian (though my plans have changed now, i still think of it)
Ardeth 😍😍
The Mummy Returns 5 ⚰️ 🐪
A great sequel. And still ardeth 😍😍😍 convince me he isn’t the funcle. Go ahead, do it. Also funcle is fun-uncle. Fun-aunt is faunt. Fun-niece is fniece.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Empire 3 🔫 👥
I mean it’s cute they tried and I do actually really like who they had for adult Alex but like the SHEER CHEMISTRY between Rachel and Brenden is off the charts like they’d get along with Gomez and Morticia and you can’t easily change that.
And I barely remember the plot or the story or literally ANYTHING that happened in this 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Cat Returns 5 🐈
So SO CUTE??? I did want the ending to change but that was just me wanting more cats. It’s just such a sweet movie about a secret world and that’s about all you want.
The Half of It 5000 🚉🚴🏻‍♀️
Why are they in the MIDDLE of the road (when she’s cycling and he (Paul) is walking – like I know it’s a small town and not a lot of traffic but STILL.
Just to clarify – I would kill for Ellie Chu. Brilliant. Beautiful. Amazing. We need more movies like this! Who needs another season of 13 Reasons Why when you could have an amazing movie like this – all the shots? Amazing. The characters? Fantastic. The ending? Beautiful.
Practical Magic 4✨
I just went into this movie just knowing it’s about sisters and magic and that’s it. It was really sweet and I’m always up for a Sandra Bullock film. It’s all about sisters and family and magic!
Panic Room 5 🏠
I didn’t know much about this movie before watching it but I really liked it! Very suspenseful and keeps you at the edge of your seat.
JARED LETO I KNEW THAT IDIOT LOOKED FAMILIAR
Princess Mononoke 5 🐺
I don’t think I really understood the movie until the near end but the story was so beautifully made and the imagery and the story truly a gift like Miyazaki’s films usually are – because I haven’t watched all of them (but I’m making my way through them!)
No one told me it was going to be violent and I’m upset with you all because I love it!!

The Bodyguard

Total Recall

Sleepy Hollow
Tumblr media
The Bone Collector
The Bodyguard 3
Look yes, it’s great that it’s Whitney – she was beautiful and an amazing singer. But it’s so freaking long. Why is it so long? Like I get slow burn but usually that has yearning! This, did not really have that type of yearning.
Total Recall 2 🔫
I’m here for Kate (Beckinsale) and John (Cho) so there you go. Even though John had a very small role, which I was highly upset by. And BILL (Nighy) who I just want to narrate audiobooks because I love his voice.
Oh yayyy. I met a WOMAN AND EVERYTHING CHANGED storyline. The movie focused on too much action and there wasn’t enough plot to match the action. Will I watch the original? Dunno.
Sleepy Hollow 1 👻
Look at how YOUNG Johnny Depp is! But like, it’s really boring? I actually wanted to stop watching it and after I finished it, I realised I should’ve.
The Bone Collector 3
Lol, that’s Jay from Modern Family. Queen Latifah of course is the best ever as usual. And Jolie is just gorgeous as usual??
I mean it’s a good cop/crime movie. Nothing else. I somehow thought it was paranormal for some reason? And the entire movie just follows the one case?

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Marianne 5 👻
I’m loving the scene changes – the flipping of the pages, the sentence starter at every episode
This show is AMAZING – spooky, suspenseful to the max and a great storyline. But Netflix law (aka Murphy’s Law but specific to Netflix and their being known for cancelling great shows) dictates that Marianne won’t have a second season. It’ll take me a while to get over it. Probably a long time.
I also watched most of this at night – which I both HIGHLY recommend and very much DO NOT.
She-Ra S2  ⚔
I’m so so loving all of this! I have the second season in my Netflix downloads – so it doesn’t take up a screen streaming slot (loophole!) and I’m ready to dive in!
I just love all the characters so much! And the animation style is so beautiful 😍
That’s all for now! Tell me about what you watched? Anything good? What about awful? Chat to me down below in the comments!

WisCon Day 3
Sunday, despite being hung over and not going to bed until 4am the night before, I staggered up early enough to catch the end of the 10am panel slot "How Lazy Writing Recreates Oppression." There were some really good thinky panels at that slot, but I knew I wasn't going to be up for anything more than listening to Tempest and Nico and Mark yell about stupid stories and stupid characters, and I was right. It was pretty great though. I did not take notes in this panel, which on reflection is a goddamn shame, but the Twitter hashtag gets a lot of the highlights. (Tempest made Mark blush with her description of the male ejaculation story arc, which alone was worth the price of admission to the entire con.) I needed some vegetables for lunch, so we walked all the way around the square to the remodeled Brocach, which used to be an Irish pub and is now a super-trendy restauraunt that serves a lot of Jaimeson. Food was good, but I can't see going there as often as we used to (even if I were in town). I'd intended to go to the "creating alien sex organs" panel at one, but the general atmosphere in the room beforehand was putting me off just slightly (nothing super offensive, just being a mildly sex-repulsed asexual person means there are some atmospheres I'm not really comfortable in), so I went to a reading instead - "AIs, Wendigos, and other Teenage Worries." Theo Nicole Lorenz read from her YA-novel-in-progress Wendigo Summer, Marianne Kirby read from a story narrated by a ghost who lives in a mall and falls in love with a mannequin (and talked up her Dustbath Revival series, which I then had to go into the dealer's room and purchase), and Naomi Kritzer read from the YA-novel-in-progress followup to her Hugo-award winning story "Cat Pictures, Please," narrated by a teenage girl and by an AI who set up a social network whose price for entry is pictures of cute animals. Because the AI likes cat pictures. Wound up spending more money in the dealer's room, because of course there were many books I was interested in, once I went looking for one, and also Dylan Edwards's feeping creatures are exactly my monster aesthetic (I recommend them to everyone). At 2:30 I went to a panel on Moral Ambiguity in Fiction, which turned out to be the followup to the villains panel I'd been to last year, where we ended up talking about the difference between moral ambiguity and "this person is evil but I'm attracted to them." There was some of that in this panel, too, but also on the difference between a text that is morally ambiguous (like, say, Watchmen, where the ending gives you several options for how to interpret an event but doesn't actually encourage you to lean toward any one of them) and a text that is morally chaotic (where the hero can do whatever he wants because he's the hero, which makes all his actions morally acceptable *coughSGAcough*). There was also some discussion of what kinds of characters are interesting when morally ambiguous (characters who grew up without a moral compass and attempt to build one; characters who do bad things in service of a higher good) and what characters are painted, either by canon or by fanon, as morally ambiguous despite not really deserving a redemption arc (Snape, Loki). (I mean, I might fight you on Loki-in-the-text, but Loki fandom really is the worst sometimes.) Sadly, no one mentioned the next logical step: people whose actions are hardly morally ambiguous but who you have a hard time arguing with anyway (see: The Ballad of Black Tom). Lots of good examples in this panel; check the book list when I get it up. At four I went to another monster panel, which turned out to be a horror panel instead: "When the Monster Isn't the Monster," which despite the panel description turned out to be a lot about how horror works and how it doesn't. Most of what I have written down is an endless list of recommendations, but a lot of the discussion wandered around the general idea of otherness (which is what monsters are about) and ways things get projected onto that and how it's handled. There was a lot of talk about some of the big recent horror movies - The Babadook, It Follows, The Witch - and what exactly their monsters are doing. The most interesting point that was brought up was about universality - while the idea of monsters generally is a universal one, individual monsters are culturally and even personally very specific, which is one reason why American remakes of foreign horror can be so bad. And some stories can't be universalized - Get Out is a movie about the experience of being Black in America, and while it might give white audiences a taste of what that's like, it's not the same thing. (We didn't talk much about Get Out, because the whole panel was white, and I appreciated that. Also, I still haven't seen it, which I need to fix.) After that it was time for dinner and getting ready for the big event! We ran back to Hattie's apartment because she'd accidentally left her dessert ticket there, came back and had Ian's Pizza for dinner, then got all fancy. (Last year I went super-girly to the Dessert Salon, the one semi-formal-if-you-want-to part of WisCon; this year I didn't get to go as butch as I wanted to but I did wear pants and the General Leia vest I'd bought on Friday, which was pretty good). Dessert Salon is always amazing; they have a good pastry chef at the Concourse. Kelly Sue DeConnick gave an amazing speech about taking your place in the pantheon of feminist writers, and about the debt owed by people with privilege to those who have less of it; Amal El-Mohtar gave an amazing speech about being strong enough to be kind, coming together and understanding one another in good faith, and Steven Universe (which I really need to suck it up and watch). The Tiptree award was presented to Anna Marie McLemore for When the Moon Was Ours - and look, the Tiptree ceremony is my absolute favorite award ceremony in all the world. The award is a tiara to wear all weekend, a check, a box of chocolates, and a piece of art inspired by the work (this year a gorgeous glass sculpture), and then we all sing a parody song based on the winning work. "And that's how you present a dignified award," Pat Murphy said when it was all over. It's the best. And then they announced next year's guests of honor, which I have yet to be less than overwhelmingly excited about, but next year it's Tananarive Due!!!!!! and Saladin Ahmed!!!!!! which is incredible, I am so excited, this is going to be amazing. After the celebrations I tried to party again, this time slightly more successful, not least because I've been following Alexandra Erin on twitter for months and had already managed to talk to her on Friday night, so I was much less intimidated. Also, they were doing virgin cocktails, and I was not going to miss a party with virgin cocktails. The party was semi to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of her first major serial, Tales of MU, and mostly to launch her new one, The Secret Sisterhood of Superheroes, featuring realistic elements such as happy queer femme superheroes, and fantasy elements such as competently evil presidents. Everyone read it, it should be great, I got a promotional button with the title of the first chapter, "Only G*sh Can Judge Me." And then I came back to the room and took a shower and went to bed. (Monday and wrap-up thoughts later tonight; hopefully book lists by next Monday.) comments from the wicked king of parody http://ift.tt/2rZetlV via IFTTT
