If you’re still taking words: restraint, mark, damage
Always accepting words!!!
Restraint - from Make Me Fret or Make Me Frown
Roy had been exercising great restraint in not interacting with the media, because the way people were talking about his friend, his probably best friend who had nearly fucking died … there would be a lot of press murders being investigated in the morning if Roy did let loose. But Roy was practicing restraint and so instead he was offering tea and other warm caffeinated beverages to all the people that had now commandeered his house for some reason. “Ta,” Jamie whispered, taking the tea from Roy’s slightly shaking hand.
Damage - from Where the Hell is the Karma?
“He’s alive,” Detective Cartwright smiled weakly. She looked tired; her head was haloed with flyaways and her jacket was hanging around her waist. All three of them read the meaning underneath the words. He wasn’t ok but he was alive. However even that assurance after everything made Roy tear up and Georgie break down into sobs of joy. “He looks rough and believe me it seems like he looks worse than physically he is. He was conscious and standing when we found him. I just don’t want you to freak out when you see him ok,” she held Georgie but turned to talk to Roy and Simon. Roy nodded. He would say anything to just see Jamie. He needed to see the damage for himself.
Mark - from The Richmond Job
"So who's the mark then. We conning slash punching this Obisanya lad?" Jamie asked, sprawled out on the settee like he owned the place. "There is no mark. At least not yet. It's a protection job. Colin's friends with the Richmond lads and Sam Obisanya is receiving death threats for the boycott of Dubai Air. The job is to protect Obisanya and find out why a little football rebellion has put a bee in Dubai Air's bonnet," Beard explained, clicking over to a photo of Colin and Mae in the middle of the whole AFC Richmond team with a circle around Sam Obisanya. Ted wasn't big on soccer but he knew how big it was on this island. Death threats against a player should be big news but everyone involved seemed to be dedicated to pretending this had never happened. Maybe Roy had found them a good job after all … not that Ted would admit it out loud.

some stuff i read and watched in december:
the buccanneers: never really hit the heights i wanted it to and most of the cast was not great! but kristine froseth is always watchable and kate winslet's daughter is darling, most importantly scotland doubling for cornwall was beaut. as ever god bless apple for spending money on nonsense
slow horses (s3): i don't know when river cartwright became my shit friend i'm unreasonably fond of but here we are! jack lowden v funny this season and i don't think it's just because i've decided he should be lymond in the billion dollar apple tv series that isn't happening and probably shouldn't bc who else is even blonde (harris dickinson?? i haven't seen the iron claw yet)
monarch: legacy of monsters: i started this and then due to my bad personality decided i had to watch all of the ~monsterverse for context, therefore godzilla december. strong threesome energy in the flashbacks, can't argue with wyatt and kurt russell playing the same character decades apart etc, love a disaster lesbian in crisis etc
~monsterverse interlude: most of these were silly, godzilla: king of the monsters was actively bad, godzilla vs. kong somehow my favourite due to the askars/rebecca hall (long beloved) combo plus all the neon. hollow earth let's go baby!
tokyo godfathers: loved this! love miracles in the city during the holiday season, love to listen to three different podcasts talking about the nuances of trans rep in subtitle translation etc
godzilla minus one: godzilla december! this one made me cryyy, the godzilla theme goes so unbelievably hard, cutest sweetest baby in the world, was incredibly happy to be emotionally manipulated by the endings etc
not going to get into all the christmas film rewatches but: coward's edit of the family stone (repeat the sounding joy!), crying at both little women 94 and little women 19 as per, moonstruck forever, bridget jones' diary colin firth the most sexually appealing colin firth 2 me etc
the wind rises: catching up with miyazaki before the boy and the heron and straight into my ghibli top 3, the love story stuff absolutely floored me
how to have sex: absolutely devastating god
the boy and the heron: very weird and beautiful and sad - saw the dub (robert pattinson you wonderful freak), seeing again with subs this week
jon krakauer, into thin air: a personal account of the everest disaster: i got about halfway through the first chapter and had to stop and ask my dad what the hell he was up to trekking to base camp on his own in the seventies. gripping, chilling, tragic
rose lerner, sailor's delight: rose lerner one of my favourite romance authors (true pretenses i love you forever etc), m/m age of sail romance set around the jewish high holidays with SO much longing and yearning my god
lizzie huxley-jones, make you mine this christmas: fun christmas romance - fake dating but she falls in love with the guy's sister! - that made me burst into tears like five pages in for reasons entirely unrelated to romance or christmas. a 2024 project for soph etc
barbra streisand, my name is barbra: did the audio version so even sped up i reckon i spent at least a full day and a half with barbra. as ever the parts about making things and artistic choices were the best parts, i respect her energy re: including every nice letter or compliment she ever received (my version of this would be reproducing nice ao3 comments etc). wild to me that she spent like 3 decades beefing with larry kramer trying to adapt the normal heart (with bradley cooper at one point lol) but i have to disagree with her impulse to tone down the gay sex to avoid alienating straight people!!
i am not here really but i was proud i managed to keep these little roundups going through the year so. happy new year friends

Colin's part in The Dead Don't Hurt is pretty small. Even smaller as in Corsage. His part is also not quite the charmer. As there are no photos so far, I let my muse take over.
Holger Olsen (played by Mortensen) is a Danish immigrant to the prewar United States of the 1860s who finds himself in San Francisco – a carpenter, rough-hewn outdoorsman and military veteran. He finds himself meeting the frank, unabashed gaze of Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a French-Canadian woman of modest means but independent temperament who has just broken off an understanding with a wealthy but obnoxious man (Colin Morgan as Lewis Cartwright).

[tv tropes: nora gray]
i tried not to put the obvious ones, like teen pregnancy but i'll probably add more to these over time.
abusive parents: by the nature of the times, and with carmen's deteriorating capacity.
addled addict: nora's an alcoholic and becomes reliant though not as reliant on cocaine as michael.
action mom: after michael leaves to the us, nora takes the kids back up to glasgow for a better life
babies make everything better: subverted. nora's life goes from upcoming stage actress partying with club dancers, to raising a son with a man she's growing to hate.
berserk button: being treated like a child, or cross her marriage (particularly in series four)
break the cutie: eilidh and for nora's it's a stark reminder of what could've been her reality.
cartwright curse: mildly subverted, nora's fate could've mirrored something much more sinister had she never married michael but that doesn't mean to say their ride was easy.
the clan: the mcleod's and taylor's (mentioned)
closet key: eilidh was nora's first romantic same-sex encounter and first sexual encounter generally.
coitus uninterrupts: polly, john, isaiah, esme and tommy - neither michael and nora are well acquainted with locks in their sex life.
collateral angst: eilidh is sent to bedlam under suspicious but obvious circumstances, nora falls back on her vices.
combat haircomb: nora never seems to be too far from something she can use whether its a lighter, hairbrush or kitchen knife.
curb stomping battle: the conks and the billy boys are consistently at each-others necks. particularly alec and jimmy mccavern.
death faked for you: polly, thomas and ada conspire against michael and nora to send michael to the us. faking nora and the kids had been killed by a rogue bottle-bomb.
deliberate values dissonance: smoking, drinking and drug abuse throughout her pregnancy.
fiery redhead: self-explanatory
foil: gina - marriage aside. gina is a poised, rich, fashionable, softly spoken american woman with a much sinister side. nora is a hot-headead, insecure loud mouth from glasgow with heart of sheer gold.
good girls avoid abortion: almost averted. nora plans on getting one before she catches polio (probably from someone on the train back down to england)
the heart: (for the mcleod's) nora is their rock, their baby who they wish to protect like she'd do the same for them.
the hedonist: very much so as a teenager when she first moved to london, then again when she and michael begin dating.
heroic blue-screen of death: when michael returns to thomas a week before christmas + when she learned of eilidh's admission she breaks ada's vase coming clean to someone she thought she could trust.
icy blue eyes: the mark of a shelby, rosalin has them.
it runs in the family: carmen was sixteen when she had the twins + colin was one of the founding members of the conks.
knight templar big brother: alec, but john takes on this role for nora especially in the early days of moving down south.
kick the dog:
campbell makes an unsavoury, off-hand comment about nora to michael.
similarly, thomas tells michael that jack nelson had made a pass at nora now that she was on her own and her kids needed a father.
mama bear: inverted ironically as polly threatens to cut off michael's hands if he ever raises them to his wife or kids, not wanting him to turn into his father.
neighbourhood friendly gangsters: despite having a violent past and the conks themselves still partaking in violence, the mcleods are not feared within their community, alec is no thomas shelby.
parental abandonment:
colin leaves when the kids are little, but carmen eventually reunites them before she then later leaves before the war.
michael is in and out of his children's lives
parental substitute:
colin's sister isabelle takes on most of the parenting after carmen is gone.
alec becomes somewhat of a father figure in place of michael for his niece and nephew
precision f-strike: a sleep-deprived nora shouts "fucking, fuck off." to thomas when tells her to get out michael's office. she does not.
pet the dog: being initially stand-offish, the shelby's are surprised with how quickly esme takes in nora, although lampshaded as nora is not a stranger esme has kindly been looking out for.
rage-breaking point: when john makes an off-hand comment about michael's affair with charlotte at nora's birthday party. seething, she storms out of the room and locks herself away. michael later finds her intoxicated on the beach after dark.
(can also be seen in kingdom come's opening)
the resenter: thomas, then gina.
violent glaswegian: nora's is lampshaded as she isn't as literally violent compared to the non-glaswegians around her and it's mainly played for laughs because she wouldn't get in anything more than a scrap, despite her claims.
alec and her father very much fit the bill though.
women are wiser: loosens as michael's arc develops. nora's a city-kid - having lived a childhood in glasgow and starting her career in london. she looks out for michael, who she still sees as a little village boy.
would hurt a child: jimmy mccavern attempts to harm george twice, almost succeeding before he is shot by michael in a bait-and-switch.

It's another sunny morning in Oasis Springs and the family is just waking up in their new home. Downstairs we find the kitchen and living room. It's all new and shiny but still feels familiar with all their personal furniture and collectibles. 🤍

Secrets and Sugar Mice (A Secret Garden Future Fic): Epilogue
Tumblr media
Story Summary: After many bumps in the road, the newly-licensed Dr. Colin Craven is finally fulfilling his long-time goal of running his own cottage hospital in Thwaite thanks to guidance, assistance, and generosity of the most competent doctor he had ever known, the Grand Doctor from London, Dr. Louis Cartwright. Even the generally pessimistic Colin can admit that the future looks bright, but there are still a couple of matters that have thrown a wrench into his plans--a certain medical supply cabinet, in particular, and Dr. Cartwright's daughter, a nurse with whom Colin did not get off on the right foot.
After a particularly frustrating day, Colin turns to his one of his oldest friends for help and advice. Perhaps Dickon is right and all it takes is the magic of friendship to turn this whole situation around...

Epilogue: Mary
Later that evening…
Mary pulled her leather driving gloves off of her hands. They were soaked and had done very little to keep her fingers from shriveling in the wet and the cold. She had the terrible habit of forgetting to take them off when she left the automobile, and she hoped they wouldn’t be ruined from her run through the rain into the house. If they were, she could always get Colin to buy her a new pair seeing as it was his fault she was out in the nasty weather anyway.
With a slight shake of her head, she opened the door to her room and found Martha turning down the covers on her bed.
Mary smiled. “You’re back.”
Martha turned to look at her—her eyebrows raising at Mary’s wet clothes.  She was unsuccessful in stifling her laugh. “So is tha.”
Mary sighed and shook slightly trying to remove some of the excess water. She would be so glad to be out of these sopping clothes. “Yes,” she huffed with a roll of her eyes. “Well, Colin called for the car, and I needed driving practice so I went out to fetch him.”
“In this weather?” Martha laughed.
Mary rolled her eyes, but her mouth turned up slightly in the corners. “You sound just like Colin.” She paused and squared her shoulders staring straight at Martha before adding pointedly, “I am a good driver. And besides, he should have been grateful I came to get him seeing as he was practically soaked by the time I got there.”
Martha’s laughing eyes narrowed. “Doesn’ he always bring an umbrella with him?”
“Yes, but apparently it didn’t do him much good today. I don’t understand what was so important that he had to go out into this storm in the first place. He said he went for a walk.” Mary huffed. “Hypocrite. The last time I wanted to go out in the rain he lectured me for two hours about how I could get pneumonia or catch my death of cold.”
“Maybe he changed his mind?” Martha suggested in her good-humored way.
“Colin doesn’t change his mind.” Mary shook her head before she added. “He said he ran into you when he was out today. What was he doing?”
Martha shifted a little, but she chuckled. “Buying candy.”
Mary blinked before she muttered under her breath. “Nincompoop.”
“I thought tha’d be happy t’ hear Master Colin had been out an’ about in th’ world.”
“I suppose,” Mary conceded, but she huffed. “Though I don’t understand why he deems it so important to leave his precious hospital for candy when he can never seem to find the time to come home.”
“I’m sure he has his reasons,” replied Martha with a knowing smile and twinkling eyes.
Mary’s eyes narrowed, and she tilted her head discerningly. “You know something.”
Martha shifted uncomfortably and she shook her head with a breathy chuckle. “No, I don’.”
Mary blinked at her. Martha had always been a terrible liar, and if Mary could see through her little fibs when she was ten, she could definitely see through them now. “Martha,” she said pointedly.
Martha looked away from her and sighed. “‘Tis not really my place t’ say, and ‘tis probably nowt anyway.”
Mary took a step towards Martha and asked with a genuine curiosity, “Martha, what is it?”
Martha paused for a moment as if mulling the question over in head, but then the smile she had seemed to be holding back spread between her cheeks, and she said, “Let’s just say, I may have a bit o’ an idea about why Master Colin spends all o’ his time at tha’ hospital…”

Cola - “Landers (Alt Version)”
Tumblr media
Cola, the band featuring the remnants of cult beloved Canadian post-punks Ought in guitarist Tim Darcy and bassist Ben Stidworthy alongside drummer Evan Cartwright (also of the Weather Station and U.S. Girls -- busy, popular guy!,) released a very underrated and delightfully dystopian debut last year in the Alan Watts-inspired Deep In View. If you missed it, here’s round two: An expanded version of the album featuring demos, plus this one -- an all-out redux of its closing track “Landers”, now less stark and loungey and made into a lackadaisical daze to sink deep into.
