Peter O'Toole and Curt Gowdy during the program ‘The American Sportsman’
*** The American Sportsman was a television show that aired from 1965 to 1986.
Peter O'Toole Season 18, Episode 2 11 April 1982
** In this episode Peter O’Toole was on fly fishing, and at one point he turns around and says, as only he can, “It’s savagely beautiful, Curt.”
** “I loved my fishing trip to South Africa with Peter O`Toole,” Gowdy said when asked to list his favorite shows. “We fished for tigerfish. They`re great fighters. They`ve got teeth like barracudas and they jump like crazy.

MLB Classics: Video: NBC Sports: MLB 1971-World Series-Game 7: Pittsburgh Pirates @ Baltimore Orioles: Full Game
Source:The New Democrat The Orioles blew great opportunities to put together a real dynasty in the 1970s and become the MLB team of the 1970s.  Yes, they won two World Series from 1966-71 and won three American League Championships and four AL Eastern Championships from 1966-73.  They could easily have accomplished so much more but instead they lost the 1969 World Series to the New York Mets, an…

It’s a Beautiful Day for Baseball
That was one of the signature calls of the late Joe Tait when he did baseball games for the Cleveland baseball team. He was one of my favorite announcers growing up along with Ernie Harwell. I also liked Curt Gowdy and Vin Scully on the national games. However there are other things I want to talk about in this post. The early season results of the tinkering with Major League Baseball is…

@jarviinen said: ❝ you’re everything they say, aren’t you? ❞
Tumblr media
She doesn't have high hopes for the Congregation; any interaction between them so far has been a letdown or a terror or some combination of the two. The vampires won't deal with her—we have had enough of witches for this century, one had responded, or so she was told. The daemons have too much on their plates to bother with witch business, though again, all of this is secondhand.
And as for the witches... Sidonie von Brocken was a nightmare, curt and rude and generally unpleasant beyond all measure; Janet Gowdie was, frankly, curious to a degree that left Rowan feeling more frightened than she was before she asked for help; and Diana Bishop was an absolute fucking horror show, as pleasant as she might have been under other circumstances, with words crawling under her skin like living ink and the kind of piercing gaze that made Rowan feel as though all of her secrets were on full display.
It's not her, Diana had explained, in the brief time they interacted. She'd flown out to Venice at Diana's suggestion, determined to be seen rather than brushed aside or swept under a rug. Real ignorance would be exhausting, but willful ignorance of what the Mayfairs have been doing is, frankly, intolerable. It's the Mayfairs. They're strange, to say the least. The sheer volume of inbreeding and isolation has left their witches with waning power for centuries; only the désignée has any luck with magic over the last twelve generations, as if she (or he, in Julien's case) were siphoning the power from the rest of the family.
"Well," Diana had said thoughtfully, correcting herself, "thirteen generations, now." And then, with a hard, angry look towards the other witch Rowan hadn't yet met, she added, "Satu is your best bet here." Whatever bad blood existed between the women, it left Rowan feeling uneasy, though she was at once at ease with Satu. They're close to the same age, offputting in the same way that no doubt had Satu facing teasing just as merciless as the teasing Rowan experienced in grade school. Scary. Possessed. Haunted. Yes; there's certainly something haunted to her. Something haunting, too.
They're back in New Orleans, now, and Rowan has cleared as many of the cousins out of the house as she could, though they aren't happy about it. Satu is stretched out on the coffee table, ignoring the couch beside her, watching as Rowan opens her eyes and lowers her hands. The necklace clatters to the floor between them, and Satu speaks, eyes fixed on Rowan's, something not unlike wonder in her tone.
Tumblr media
"Guess so." Wish I wasn't. Not that Rowan's had much of a say in anything that's happened to her recently, especially considering her family. Not for the first time, she wishes she stayed in San Francisco. "But I don't want it. I don't want any of it. I'm sick of being used. I'm sick of being manipulated. And I'm sick of just being... the désignée or Deirdre's daughter or Lasher's chosen. I'm not a person anymore. Do you get how fucked that is?" Her voice is rising with agitation, and Rowan lifts an arm, wipes the back of her hand over her own startling eyes as she shifts them away from Satu. "All I wanted was answers. Not any of this."

Mike Breen to receive Vin Scully Award for sportscasting excellence from WFUV Radio Nov. 1
Tumblr media
Mike Breen (FCRH ’83), the 2020 Curt Gowdy Award-winning Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, New York Knickerbockers play-by-play announcer on MSG Networks and “Voice of the NBA on ABC/ESPN” will become the second Fordham University alumnus to receive the Vin Scully Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting from WFUV Radio (90.7 FM/wfuv.org). WFUV is the noncommercial, member-supported public media service of Fordham University. The station celebrates its 75th anniversary this fall.
WFUV will also present Emmy Award-winning CBS Evening News anchor and 60 Minutes correspondent Norah O’Donnell with the Charles Osgood Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.
The Awards will be presented on Tuesday night, November 1, at On the Record: A Celebration of Achievement in News and Sports Broadcasting, a benefit for WFUV, in the Costantino Room at Fordham School of Law (150 W. 62nd Street, NYC).
Anthony Mason, national correspondent for CBS News, will serve as emcee for the evening.
On the Record was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and no awards were presented.
George Bodarky (FCRH’93), Fordham alumnus and WFUV’s longtime news and public affairs director, and current community partnership and training editor at WNYC, will be honored with a special tribute.
The evening will also honor two of WFUV’s exceptional student broadcasters: newscaster Abigail Delk (FCRH ’22) and sportscaster Alexander Wolz (FCRH ’22).
Beth Knobel, associate professor of communication & media studies at Fordham, will host an armchair discussion with some of the participants.
Michael Kay (FCRH ’82), YES Network’s “Voice of the Yankees” and ESPN NY Radio host, became the first Fordham alum to receive the Scully Award in 2018. Breen and Kay were classmates at Fordham.
Breen is in his 30th year calling Knicks games. The Yonkers native and Long Island resident is best known for his “BANG” call for a critical basket.
For tickets to On the Record visit https://mailchi.mp/fordham/wfuv-on-the-record-evite or contact Theresa Lynch, WFUV’s assistant director of development and special events at [email protected] or 646-868-4226. Individual Tickets are priced at $500; and $250 for Fordham “Young Alumni” (2013 to 2022 graduates) Said Breen: “When you are a Fordham graduate, a WFUV alumnus, and a play-by-play broadcaster, receiving an award named after Mr. Scully is the highest honor I could ever receive. Mr. Scully’s talent and skill on the air, and his character and integrity as a man, has made him the ultimate role model for me and countless broadcasters that span over generations. I am so humbled and grateful for this incredible honor.” Said O’Donnell: “I’m incredibly honored to receive this year’s Charles Osgood Award. As a broadcast journalist, I really do believe that telling stories and interviewing people can change lives. And it’s because of programs like the one at Fordham University and WFUV, the next generation of journalists are prepared to carry on the best standards and become even more impactful.”
The Scully Award recognizes the late, iconic baseball broadcaster who passed away earlier this year. In 2016, he completed his 67th season as “Voice of the Dodgers” and is a renowned Fordham alumnus (FCRH 1949). WFUV was the launching pad for his Hall of Fame broadcast career. Previous Scully Award recipients include: inaugural honoree Vin Scully (2008), Dick Enberg (2009), Ernie Harwell (2010), Pat Summerall (2011), Al Michaels (2012), Bob Costas (2013), Verne Lundquist (2014), Mike “Doc” Emrick (2015), Brent Musburger (2016), Bob Wolff (2017), Michael Kay (2018), Tim McCarver (2019).
The Osgood Award acknowledges the distinguished Fordham/WFUV Radio alumnus (FCRH 1954) who was the long time, Emmy Award-winning anchor of CBS Sunday Morning and recipient of the 2017 News & Documentary Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Previous Osgood Award honorees include: inaugural recipient Charles Osgood (2008), Jim Lehrer (2009), Bob Schieffer (2010), Tom Brokaw (2011). Christiane Amanpour (2012), Sam Donaldson (2013), Scott Simon (2014), Lesley Stahl (2016), Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill (co-recipients in 2017), Jane Pauley (2018), Ted Koppel (2019).

The AM: October 10, 2022
Tumblr media
It’s a holiday Monday in Canada, so this week’s episode takes a suitably lazy start, with hushed sounds from actually-quite-hardworking musicians Brian Borcherdt, Richard Reed Parry, and Sarah Neufeld. Best known for their work with Holy Fuck (Borcherdt) and Arcade Fire (Parry and Neufeld), their other projects are worlds removed from those stadium-ready sounds, hewing closer to ambient folk and neo-classical. The episode sprawls out from there, but generally sticks with ethereal sounds throughout.
Hope it starts your day off on a restful note. And if it isn’t a day off, here’s hoping you get one soon.
PS – CJSW’s Funding Drive is on now. The AM’s Funding Drive special is two weeks away, but if you want to be ahead of the curve, here’s the link.
