DEVIL SHOOTING TARGET
USA, 1910–1920
Cast iron, gold
19 × 15 × 9 cm
Ping! Bam! Clang! Such are the ear-piercing sounds that used to excite thrill seekers at target-shooting galleries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Commonly seen at early midways, carnivals, saloons and other places where people sought amusement, shooting galleries invited all comers, young and old, to step up, take aim and hopefully hit the target and win a prize. Each target was a sturdy, painted cast-iron form, usually replicating an animal or human figure.
The very rare cast iron Devil shooting gallery target presented here is attributed to H. C. Evans & Company of Chicago, Illinois. It retains its wonderful vibrant red in-use painted surface.

STUDENTICA DEVIL–FORM TANKARD
Probably Switzerland, 1920s
Pewter and earthenware
17 × 16.5 × 12 cm
This very decorative tankard in the shape of a devil's head is a typical example of a ‘studentica’ object. This term, mainly used by collectors, refers to objects created for traditional student customs; fraternity paraphernalia, literature – and objects linked with students’ affinity of getting inebriated. The lid is reinforced all around with a ring made of pewter. The jug is in very good condition and shows no damage or restorations.

A LARGE PAIR OF VENETIAN CARVED PINE AND FRUITWOOD DEVIL FIGURES ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCESCO TOSO (ITALIAN D. 1893)
Each figure with horns and faun like ears and with an exaggerated 'S' bend posture, the man wearing a cravat, a waistcoat with detailed buttons and a tailcoat, one hand in a masked pocket, the other webbed and outstretched, with hairy goat like legs, his tail resting between his cloven hoof feet, the female with a menacingly seductive gaze, sporting a hat and wearing a close fitting corset, dress and jacket, with a ruffled lace collar, her shoes carved with masks.
