2021 Diwali Celebration Outfit - BGC
During my New Year's survey I asked everyone what kind of content they'd like to see in the coming year. Most responses were general eras or styles, but one person specifically requested this outfit, which is part of American Girl's Cultural Celebrations collection. I was immediately interested but since the Hindu festival of light had already passed by then, the project just sat in the back of my mind for the next several months.
Done in the Love Bomb palette. Each color swatch has two patterns.

There the arms will look funky where they meet the sleeves due to the mesh being converted from adult to child. I can't even tell you how many adjustments and weight transfers it took to get the sash to look somewhat decent.
Because my survey was anonymous I don't know who made this request, but if you're still around I hope you like it!
Feel free to tag me if you use it, I’d love to see! My TOU are here.

★ Trade experts explain why no Hindi or Pan-Indian film clashes with Salman Khan’s films at the box office: “He’s 100% an ORGANIC star; clashing with him can prove SUICIDAL”!
Nov 7, 2023
Salman Khan’s Diwali release Tiger 3 is nearly a week away and the excitement is tremendous. What’s interesting is that it’ll have a solo release of sorts, as no other Hindi or Pan-India South film is clashing on the same day. In fact, Salman Khan has not faced a clash since 2010. The last time that happened was when his 2009 action super-hit film Wanted was released on the same day as Rani Mukerji-starrer Dil Bole Hadippa.
Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012), Jai Ho (2014), Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Sultan (2016), Tubelight (2017), Race 3 (2018), Bharat (2019), Dabangg 3 (2019) and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023) released with no competition. Antim (2021) faced a collision with Satyameva Jayate 2 (2021) but then it didn’t feature the superstar in the lead.
Other stars haven’t been that fortunate. Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale (2015) and Raees (2017) were released alongside Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Kaabil (2017) respectively. SRK is at his best position arguably right now and yet, his next film Dunki will have to share screens with Salaar on Christmas 2023. Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha clashed with Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan last year. Salman’s last few films have not done well and yet, no one is ready to come on the same Friday as him.
We asked trade experts about this rare phenomenon. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “He has a huge following and is a darling of the masses. The business he has generated over a period of time in mass pockets is phenomenal. Though he has had a rough patch, he's the pied piper of Bollywood.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan, in agreement, exulted, “Salman is a very big hero of the masses. He has always had such a huge fan following; Shah Rukh Khan ka aisa following ab bana hai. Aamir Khan never had such a mass pull. Salman’s craze is one of a kind. Hence, filmmakers are wary of clashing their films with him. Itna bada hero hai, kaun takkar lega iske saath?”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, remarked, “Salman is the only superstar who people want to see on screen. He has the maximum on-screen superstardom out of all the actors. It’s a very critical factor. He’s also not on our social media every time, going to malls, opening ribbons, dancing, etc.”
He continued, “Unfortunately his films have not worked as he hasn’t paid much attention to the storytelling, packaging, direction, etc. He has that power that if he gets these things right, then there’s no stopping him. That’s why many are wary of clashing with him as they know that at least in the opening weekend, their film will get butchered.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise cinema hall in Jaipur, explained, “Salman Khan is an action hero. When no one was doing action, he was the only action excelling in this genre. Somewhere, his confidence shook and he also did non-action films like Tubelight (2017), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), etc. Only Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) worked in this regard. But even when his films were gadbad, they still made Rs. 100 crores plus. There was a time when the hit films of Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn did Rs. 100 crores. But Salman’s flop films do Rs. 100 crores even today! And his hit films have done more than Rs. 300 crores. It’s thanks to him that the industry realized the true potential of a Hindi film. Hence, clashing with him can prove suicidal.”
He also said, “He’s 100% an organic star. Even Sunny Deol is.”
Girish Johar added, “If he moulds himself to the sensibilities that cater to his fans and also provides intelligent content, then sky is the limit. I think Tiger 3 will do well. It ticks all the right boxes.”
Taran Adarsh also said along the same lines, “Tiger 3 being a brand and essaying a role that is much-loved, I am sure it’ll have a great run and a huge opener.”

SH looks at your Mobil phone: your constant messages about your merchandise denounce you don’t feel the Christmas spirit 🎄
This year, everyone wanted to celebrate Christmas with their family after two years of Covid-19. SH spent the whole Christmas day posting his merchandise and changing the order of his photos on IG. Don't let your customers ruin your Christmas! Or SH was bored this Christmas at home?
Tumblr media
25th December 2022 🎄
@shinycomputerqueen SH spends Christmas at his mother's house in Edinburgh. Sam's mother lost her partner last year. She needs more consideration. Christmas is for giving, and his family requires more attention than his clients. But he seems like he easily gets bored with everything and can't handle boredom. Despite being home with his family, couldn't he leave aside his mobile phone addiction and rationalise its use on Christmas Day?
@shinycomputerqueen It is not about knowing how he spends time with his family, but about rethinking the meaning of the Christmas spirit. It is good to show our loved ones the affection we have for them with other details. There are times when we all worry or feel the need to rethink things. The coronavirus pandemic has allowed us to rethink the meaning of Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, or any traditional festive season.
SH seems to feel compelled to repeat specific obsessions and compulsions that interfere with his daily life, even at Christmas and is unable to control his symptoms. While he feels the need to repeatedly report what he does, who cares whether he ran 6 miles (ca. 10 km) on Christmas Day as a way to temporarily relieve his anxiety? Why didn't he post a cosy photo since he didn't spend the 2021 Christmas period with his family in Scotland when his mum needed him the most because he was in America?
His mobile phone is an essential extension of himself. But surprisingly, on Christmas Day, he shares photos of his merchandise with perfect strangers, who are trying to show off. Maybe he should have a wonderful Christmas FaceTime even when he's eating his Christmas dinner, instead of munching on his turkey or brussels sprouts or asking for more gravy. IMHO
I agree with you, it is not good to ignore the people next to us because we are too aware of our mobile phones.

On Hinduism 🕉️
So for the past 2.5-3 years I’ve been studying Hinduism and incorporating aspects of Hindu Spirituality into my personal practice.
This has been an amazing journey for me, and as a child who was raised Catholic but had many Hindu friends - this fulfills part of my inner child.
I always wanted to go to the Hindu and Sikh festivals my friends went to, always wanted to learn more about their gods, and always wanted to better understand the Mandir’s they had in their homes. But I wasn’t allowed to, and so I was left wanting almost all of my childhood.
In 2021 I made a friend at my first post-college job who has a multitude of vibrant intersecting identities. She is Indo-Caribbean, and a trans woman, and a practicing witch, and a model, and an activist, and so so much more - but she is also Hindu.
Her gentle hands helped to guide me into this path that is now a piece of who I am spiritually, and I can’t express my gratitude in her accepting me into her faith and spirituality.
I’ve now celebrated Diwali and Navratri, as well as held many personal Puja’s in my home. I’ve been to a few different Mandir’s in my area - but found that I prefer a solitary practice (and felt very uncomfortable in those spaces, due to my trauma with organized religion).
I’m not sure that I’d call myself Hindu, it feels like my practice is too mixed with other influences to claim that label, but I would like to think that I am spiritual aligned with many aspects of Hinduism.
I’m in the early stages of developing a relationship and devotional practice to Sarasvati and Shailputri, and I’m *so* excited to be starting this new journey.
Thank you for reading, Namaskar 🙏🏻

New York City will add the festival of Diwali to the list of public school holidays in recognition of the growth of the city's South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday.
Diwali, known as the festival of lights, happens in October or November depending on the lunar calendar.
However, this year it falls on Sunday, Nov. 12 — meaning the 2023-2024 school calendar will not be affected by the change.
City officials say more that 200,000 New York City residents celebrate Diwali, which Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists observe.
"This is a city that’s continuously changing, continuously welcoming communities from all over the world," Adams said in announcing that Diwali will join celebrations including Rosh Hashana and Lunar New Year as a day off for students. "Our school calendar must reflect the new reality on the ground."
The new holiday will become official if Gov. Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat, signs a bill passed by the New York state legislature earlier this month making Diwali a public school holiday in New York City.
Adams, who pledged to made Diwali a school holiday when he ran for mayor in 2021, said he expects Hochul to sign the bill. The governor's office said Hochul, who hosted a Diwali celebration last fall, is reviewing all of the bills passed by the legislature in 2023.
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, a Democrat who represents parts of the New York City borough of Queens, introduced legislation last month to make Diwali a federal holiday.

guide to writing a desi james potter (and even for harry)!
(desi is used for south asians. meaning india + pakistan, afghanistan, bangladesh, bhutan, maldives, nepal, sri lanka. now i’m indian so i can only speak about that but a lot of the tips are the same. please research! and be respectful while writing them! i’ll try to include as much as i can here)
i've lived here my entire life so trust me.
and this is gonna be long. under the cut!
1. james potter can remain james potter
we don’t usually anglicize our names. don’t go finding obscure names starting with j that you can anglicize to james.
it kind of perpetuates the stereotype of indian names being very hard to pronounce. and britain fucked us over so no way in hell we'll be changing our own name to something easier for white people to pronounce.
instead you can make potters indian christians. i have a lecturer named veronica so i can assure you people in india have all kinds of names.
its a suggestion of course. but i have read fics where james has very traditional and religious names. no problem with that but its a little out of the loop and old fashioned. but if you want some help with finding names then don’t hesitate to ask.
2. where is he from
okay so now this gets interesting. there are a 28 states and 8 union territories. james potter can be from anywhere and not just gujrat and punjab and tamil nadu.
where’s my james potter from the gorgeous seaside state of goa? from the busy heart of metropolitan mumbai? from the amazing states of northeast? from bengal? from madhya pradesh? from kerela? from-
okay this is not a geography lesson but you get my point! there are so. many. places. he can be from any of them.
3. religion
india has a big population of hindus, muslims, christians, sikhs, zoraostrians, buddhists, jains etc. agnostic and atheist people exist too (hi).
your indian character can be any of those, not just hindu. it affects the indian sounding name you choose for him.
example: goan christian james can be james maharashtrian hindu james can be jai
but being religious or not, it doesn’t stop us from enjoying all the amazing festivals. you don’t know what i’d do to read a jegulus diwali fic ashdjfksdj
4. looks
now i know everyone’s like obsessed with atj (i can’t see him as james at ALL) or for desi james, dev patel (god, he’s the only desi character in all hollywood movies im so sick of his face. i have much better fancasts).
but just like names, our looks are also different. pale, wheatish, dusky complexion. again depending on which state. we usually have dark eyes and hair. and light eyes like blue, green or hazel are pretty rare.
5. food
curry doesn’t exist. repeat after me. curry doesn’t exist.
naan bread isn’t real, naan is A BREAD. and even though butter chicken is tasty asf, we don't eat this on a daily basis, my dudes. (#justiceforpavbhaji). but we do eat a LOT of biryani (its apparently the most ordered meal in india lol)
and i know you want to make the "im very white for spices" jokes but where are my desserts????? rasmalai? gulab jamun? rabdi? so cloyingly sweet ashdj
and we call tea, chai and it can be sweet and spicy.
it would make me so happy seeing names of my favorite food sprinkled through out your fic even if you don't elaborate on his indian heritage much <;3
i can’t list off every single one of them here but my dms are always open if you need any help with them
6. not all of us
it makes me sad reading about fics where james doesn’t like his indian heritage. not all poc characters need an "accepting my culture" arc.

what is your problem with tiktok or booktok and colleen hoover lmao its not that bad surely
the fact that it actively promotes overconsumerism, the way it sells books to you by just playing into already heavily milked out tropes with very specific character niches that are seen in every book nowadays and how the reading is just seen as something aesthetic or a part of the "it girl routine" maybe? if those are enough reasons for you?
does the fact that these books are the first things you see when you walk into a bookstore not bother you? when you ask someone for a book recommendation they'll follow it up with "its a romance slow burn enemies to lovers". it's always about the aesthetic of the book, how many lines can you take out of context and post as a compilation of your super cute romantic annotations page on instagram. no analyzing the book, no theories, no symbolism or meaningfulness at all. how people stand reading those kind of books and still feel any kind of emotions over these flat as hell books with no world or character building is genuinely baffling to me
no one seems to know about actual literature anymore, which not to sound like a boomer but i think its definitely true. there's always been trend cycles, i agree such as the harry potter craze from the 1990s to the 2000s and the dystopia hunger games/maze runner/divergent blast in the early 2010s but tiktok has just.. shortened these cycles so much. as a result, people like our darling colleen hoover whose written around 46 books since 2015 (according to google) try come up with as much fresh content as they can as quickly as possible for the readers (see overconsumption). the fact that this lady outsold the bible is not outstanding to me, its fucking concerning.
and after all that, the result is badly written books with characters who're about as dimensional as a piece of paper, overuse of tropes, read like they've been written by a toddler, toxic-ass relationships being romanticised, very unnecessary sex scenes and countless other things. seriously if i wanted to read about the kind of stories hoover tells i would just open a wattpad account.
this isn't to say that all booktok books are terrible. i'm trying to highlight some of the flaws i find in authors like colleen hoover, emily henry, taylor jenkins reid, ali hazelwood, sarah j maas and elena armas. some of their works are quite decent :) six of crows, thsoeh, tsoa, circe, daisy jones, where the crawdads sing etc are some books which i think everyone has heard of if theyre active online which were actually nice reads. also i am BEGGING u to reach out of your comfort zone and read something different like non-fiction or fantasy or one of the classics for once if you only read booktok like seriously it might be hard but just do it for the love of god!!

Mira and a town of relatives
Tumblr media
Mira and her father in the episode "The Great Diwali Mystery"
Mira, Royal Detective is one of my favorite series. I have to write about it here on this blog because unlike some other shows, the town where this Indian-inspired series is set, Jalpur, the protagonist, Mira, appears to be related to...everyone! This is like any small town. Anyway, I'd like to break it down for you all, because family ties and the value of family is central to this series, unlike any other that I have ever seen.
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on June 2, 2021.
Tumblr media
We do not currently know who Shanti's husband is, or if he is still alive. I created this using one of my favorite sites for creating family trees, Family Echo
Let's start with Mira, herself. She was appointed by Queen Shanti to be the royal detective in the city, and she considers her to be like a daughter. Shanti herself has two sons: Prince Neel, a brilliant and talented inventor, often flying around the city in his flycycle or some other invention, and Prince Veer, the aspiring King of Jalpur. Neel has a crush on Mira. We also know that he has a grand-grandmother who was an inventor and built a submarine, as shown in a recent episode, and has great aunt, Rupa. As for Mira, she has two friends, mongooses who help her out on cases: Mikku and Chikku. They are brothers and have two cousins, who are also mongooses: Preeti and Neeti, who are skilled in rope gymnastics. [1]
Mira, however, is NOT directly related to Queen Shanti. Her father is Sahil, who calls her "beti" when talking to her. Two of her friends, Priya and Meena, are sisters, and her cousins, as is Chotu, a younger brother of Priya and Meena (also known as Mina). Their mother is Pushpa, who is also Mira's aunt. Presumably, Kamala is also her cousin, who has a younger sister named Dimple. The same can, possibly, be said for her friends Pinky, Dhruv Sharma, and Sandeep. Apart from them are two brothers, Ranjeet and Manjeet, a music teacher (Sanjeev Joshi), who are her friends. [2] In a few episodes, the royal Nayapuram family appears, comprised of a king, queen, and their daughter, Princess Shivani.
In order to explain this, I came up with this chart created via one originally shared by Kathleen Brandt, a genealogist who wrote that it is "one of the biggest errors made when referencing cousin relationships."
Tumblr media
So, we currently do not know the parents of Kamala and Dimple, Dhruv (whose surname is Sharma), Sandeep, or Pinky. But, it is possible that at least one of their parents is a brother or sister of Sahil and Pushpa. There are also many, many unnamed uncles that Mira meets in the town, meaning that they may be some of these people. Some of these parents may have been featured in some episodes but I'm not aware of them. That is definitely a possibility. Saying all of this, it is possible that Mira is calling older men she meets in Jalpur "Uncle" since, as some have noted, "kids routinely call complete strangers “Uncle” and “Aunty”" even if they aren't related. As Times of India noted in 2015, it is "very common" for those in India to call those older than themselves "Aunty" or "Uncle," with this done out of "respect for the elderly or for fellow humans." That could be the case here, even though the terms can also be used for those that someone is related to, by family ties.
Even so, I think that Pushpa is Mira's aunt, since her name in the show is literally "Auntie Pushpa." [3] In the end, I'll keep an eye on this series and possible write another post on this show later.

Notes
[1] In a recent episode, "The Case of the Vanishing Picnic," Mikku says "its not every day there are cousins that visit from the big city," referring to Neeti and Preeti, showing Mira secret family recipes they have prepared.
[2] This isn't accounting for the Palace Tailor, the two bandits (Manish and Poonam), Ram Sing Ji, and Deputy Oosha who are likely not related to Mira.
[3] In the episode "The Case of the Lost Treehouse," Mira's pa says "there's the tapestry your Auntie Pushpa made for the wall," making it clear this is the case.

Drarry Headcanons: Draco celebrating Diwali with Harry (pt. 2)
They have been together for two years now and it's Diwali, one of their favourite festivals but sadly Harry was busy with an ongoing auror mission so they decided to just light some Diyas and get Indian takeaway.
Draco of course had other plans. While Harry was working late nights and hurrying out of their home early morning gave Draco plenty of opportunities to well... scheme (cue the evil laughter)
AND EVERYTHING WAS PERFECTLY PLANNED!
So when Harry came home on Diwali evening, it was to a quiet home decorated with lights which made him stare in awe for a while before the cold wind made him shiver and he hurried to open the door.
The inside of the home, unlike the outside was dark with a path lit by Diyas. Harry checked the room for any hostile aura and then with a hand on his holster followed the path.
It led them to their bedroom where a Sherwani set was kept. A small smile took over as he understood what was going on. He quickly changed into them and cast a refreshing charm when suddenly another path was lit by Diyas.
He followed them out to their balcony, beautiful decorated by Diyas, fairy lights and marigold garlands. And in the middle sat their table, from where the most mouthwatering smell was coming and his most favourite person in the world.
His grin growing bigger, Harry swiftly crossed the room as Draco got up with a smug smile and a sparkle in his eyes, brighter than the fireworks.
He captured those soft pink lips in a heated kiss and before things got more heated Draco pushed his hand against Harry's chest. And that's when Harry noticed it.
Draco's hand, honestly the most lovely hands he has ever seen, was adorned by the most intricate henna art and they just looked beautiful. He slowly lifted those hands and placed a kiss on them and they both shared a familiar heated look between them. (Draco knew Harry loved his hands. And last year when Teddy had adorned Draco's hand with silly flower henna design, Draco often caught Harry staring at them and... well he knew Harry would love them and definitely was a hundred percent sure later as well ;) )
They both enjoyed the meal prepared by Draco, who was now a master of Indian cooking after training months with Harry.
After finishing dinner, when some Kaju Katli and Ladoos appeared Harry heard a familiar sound and looked up. IT WAS A FIREWORKS SHOW! One of the other, different colours, different patterns, and he stared in silent awe.
After that a lot of things happened and the end results were pretty nice. Maybe it wasn't traditional to the T but they had years to come where they can make rangolis together or cook up some nimki - but this is what Harry needed this time, a hope of light during the grim times and, since this is what Diwali all about Draco was more that happy to do it for his love.

People misunderstand 'enemies to lovers'. It is not a sudden switch from hatred to love Or crossing that thin line but it is the 'loving someone even after seeing the worst side' cause it brings hope that there is a chance that you'll find someone who'll love you, flaws and all<3

Just finished House and omg the feels I have right now is surreal! I can only delusion myself into believe that House somehow found a way to keep Wilson alive and they both are happy. And 8 goddamn seasons and the fact it's over is just hitting while I write this so I'll probably drown myself in fanfics. And the last 3 episodes where they were basically confessing to each other! Like the if only the writers didn't end it exactly like that I would worship them. Honestly the fact is every writer is killing off people right and left and that is a whole other branch of therapy cause can you not! I am happy they mean so much to each other but I'll probably cry myself to sleep today so cheers to all the Hilson fans and House fans out there! 🥂

THINGS TO DO ON YOUR BIRTHDAY- HARRY POTTER EDITION
Get up late in the morning with your husband's arms wrapped around you, who is already awake and looking at you in a way that can't be described.
Let him be the first one to wish you in the morning, followed by a small peck that leads to.. well bigger things.
After an hour or two of lazy-ing around take out the softest bathrobe that could possibly exist, freshen up and go downstairs to find your singing husband preparing your favourite breakfast- Indian.
(And while he had gone down to work in the kitchen you looked at the frame which you can draw with your eyes closed and whisper a soft thank you)
Various kind of Indian delicacies laid out on the table you look for the one which you know will fill your heart- a dish your husband learnt and spent weeks perfecting just for your birthday- an Indian delicacy you have on your birthday, Payasam.
Sitting facing each other, you both enjoy your food- you exclaiming how delicious it is at every point you can and him giving you a smile that can make you fly.
You both eat with your hands so there is not much hand lingering but every now and then, his legs slightly blush yours and that shouldn't make you blush even after 19 years but it does.
Stomach filled to the brim you both shift to the garden - which has a charmed couch that can withstand any weather. You places your head on your dear husband's lap and close your eyes to feel the warm sun on your face.
Slender fingers adorned with a gleaming ring softly caress your tangled hair, the nails sometimes dragging which makes you groan.
He softly reads your favourite book while your mind drifts to similar memories from previous years. When you lose yourself in the nostalgia he gives you a soft peck to remind you where you are now, who you are now.
You'll spend a late lunch with your adoptive family, god son and kids later but for now it's only the two of you. And that's enough.
You softly drag his fingers away from your hair and place a soft kiss and hold them over your heart- where it belongs.

Have we decided what the problem with Thanksgiving is going to be this year?
We could start with the base-level perennials — the godawful travel, the risk to one’s diet, the cousin who is loudly certain that someone has slipped gluten into the gluten-free stuffing. There’s typically a grievance against the potatoes: the format, mashed or casserole, whether or not to marshmallow, why is there never enough. Someone has canceled at the last minute; someone nobody invited shows up anyway. At least one child refuses to sit at the kiddie table, the teenagers refuse to put their phones down at whichever table, an uncle insists on watching the football game at the table. The table itself looks nothing like tables on Instagram.
But in recent years, we’ve had particular reason to squabble over the holiday.
For four unforgiving years, from 2016 to 2020, the problem was breaking bread with your political nemeses. Advice columns bristled with agita. How do you handle your Trump-loving father-in-law or the out-of-towners who show up in MAGA gear? “No baseball caps at the table” was USA Today’s Rule No. 7 for avoiding political food fights in 2019. In some other neck of the woods, aggrieved citizens despaired about their Occupy nephew storming in unshaven from his sophomore year at some college “back East.”
No sooner was Trump voted out than we had a new thing — the threat of death — to antagonize the proceedings. With the government urging Americans to stay home, Thanksgiving 2020 was a potential superspreader event extraordinaire — and one reserved exclusively for family members. Were you inviting that great-aunt because you enjoyed her company or because you wanted her dead? Into 2021, the challenge persisted as the vaccinated squared off against the anti-vaxxers, with divided families worried about the full immunological spectrum of their extended entourage.
Also last year and just in time for its 400th anniversary — though one could hardly suggest the issue was new — some raised the pesky question of Thanksgiving’s celebration of genocide. This forced people intent on their pumpkin pie to confront the fact that Thanksgiving is, at root, a commemoration of conquest and subjugation. It is, after all, a day that the United American Indians of New England observe as a day of mourning. The original Native American “helpers,” the Wampanoags, have expressed regret for helping the Pilgrims out in the first place.
Or maybe it all just makes you angry and resentful! What has happened to your cherished American tradition, you wonder? Must everything be problematic?
Nearly every holiday — with the possible exception of April Fools’ Day, but just you wait — has become some kind of political football. The Republican right has been catastrophizing about an alleged war on Christmas for over a decade, though nobody has alerted the pharmacy chains whose aisles are already laden with red-and-green candy. Meanwhile, one poorly chosen wig on Halloween, fraught with potential cultural offenses, can result in social disaster. Please, let it not be your kid who winds up the wrong kind of Disney character! Also in autumn, Diwali, a major occasion for Indians at home and abroad, has lately become a huge celebration across America. But who, some wonder, is allowed to put on a sari?
Ye olden holidays, they are a-changin’. For the past two years, President Biden has issued a proclamation naming the second Monday in October, also known as Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day in order to “celebrate indigenous history and our new beginning together, honoring Native Americans for shaping the contours of this country since time immemorial.” The obvious question there is, what took so long?
So let’s consider the nominees for this year’s chief Thanksgiving gripe: We could make a big deal out of the turkey shortage, for example. Both bird and side dishes have gotten notably more expensive, and with an impending recession, now really isn’t the time. After a summer of exorbitant and overbooked flights that got canceled just as its passengers straggled out of security, travel this year looks to be particularly crowded and unpleasant. And there’s always contagion to fall back upon. With Covid, R.S.V. and the flu all going around, a full-fledged gathering should provide ample opportunity to spread ill health.
But would it be a problem to suggest that maybe Thanksgiving not be a problem this year?
Boiled down to its essentials, Thanksgiving is a holiday about shared gratitude. We could just think about the “thanks” in Thanksgiving for a change. That gratitude may have originally been intended toward God and those Native Americans who helped the newly arrived colonists survive — and for whom atonement may have been more appropriate. But even for us secular humanists, Thanksgiving offers a moment to appreciate whatever good this year wrought, even if by accident or chance.
I can think of a few things to feel thankful for. As vexing as this country can be, the midterms ended with a semblance of democracy still intact. The Democrats retained the Senate, striking a necessary blow against insanity. And while Sarah Huckabee Sanders was somehow considered a suitable person to run an entire state, Wes Moore, the accomplished author of five books and a promising leader, was elected to lead another. Elon Musk has sent Twitter twisting and shrieking toward the hellish oblivion where it belongs. Every year, more people seem to recognize the wisdom of spatchcocking their turkeys. And the Little Pie Company, whose sour cream apple walnut pie I’ve been worshiping since high school, now ships nationwide. If nothing else, for many Americans, it’s a four-day weekend. I’ll spend mine grateful for any leftovers.

★ Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan teaser out on January 25; Expected with SRK’s Pathaan!
Jan 20, 2023
Through the years, Eid has become synonymous to Salman Khan Films. Over the last decade, Salman Khan has delivered bumper openers during this festive weekend with films like Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Race 3 and Bharat among others. The impact of Salman Khan films on the festive weekend is so high that his absence from the festival in 2022 lead to a big chatter in the trade and audiences alike. 4 years after Bharat, Salman Khan returns to the Eid weekend with his next release, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. While the shooting of the film is wrapped up, the team is presently working on the post production work.
Salman Khan's Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan teaser on January 25
With exactly 3 months to go for the release, Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that the teaser of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan will be launched with a bang on January 25, 2023. “Salman Khan and his team have cut a 1 minute 45 second teaser of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. It’s the first time that the audience will get a glimpse into the world of Salman Khan’s family entertainer, which is gearing up for an Eid 2023 opening on April 21. Post the launch, the teaser will be up for public exhibition until the launch of trailer,” revealed a source close to the development.
Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan teaser expected with Pathaan
The teaser is expected to screen with Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan in cinema halls, given that the action-packed thriller is also releasing on January 25. Interestingly, Salman Khan is also a part of Pathaan, making an appearance in his iconic avatar of Tiger aka. Avinash Singh Rathore. Talking of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, the film is directed by Farhad Samji and also features Pooja Hegde, Venkatesh and Jagapathi Babu among others. It’s touted to be an action comedy set against the backdrop of a great Indian family from the South.
The film also marks Salman Khan’s return to the big screen in a full-fledged avatar after Dabangg 3 (2019), though he had another release in the form of Radhe on digital platforms in 2021. After Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, Salman will be seen in Tiger 3, which expands the YRF Spy Universe further. Tiger 3 is gearing up for a Diwali 2023 opening and brings back the pairing of him with Katrina Kaif. The actor is presently reading scripts to lock his line up for 2024.
We hear, Salman will decide on his next film after locking the first cut of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
