Who do you consider as the most prominent young dancers both at the mariinsky and at the bolshoi?
Great question!
When I hear "prominent", I think of the dancers that the management sees as the most useful and important. So this is not my personal opinion on the best dancers, but what I think the theatres and public view as the most valued.
Mariinsky:
Maria Khoreva and Maria Ilyushkina are right now really seen as the future of the company. They both have the right height and proportions that the Mariinsky prefers. While Maria Ilyushkina seems to get more love from the older Russian balletomanes, Maria Khoreva is loved by the younger ballet fans.
Renata Shakirova is right now carrying so many shows, she performs almost everything and is depended on by management whether she's promoted or not
Nikita Korneyev is really being pushed as the young male star right now after Caixeta left, especially as a great partner for Ilyushkina
Bolshoi:
I would first list the five newly promoted principals, they're all young and really seem to be the future of the company: Elizaveta Kokoreva, Alyona Kovalyova, Eleonora Sevenard, Egor Gerashchenko, and Dmitry Smilevsky. But I would say out of these five especially Sevenard, Kokoreva, and Smilevsky are getting a lot of attention
Eva Sergeenkova has been pushed as the new star by Vaziev, even younger than the new principals. I would say to a lesser extent, Arina Denisova is being pushed too, though she hasn't been accepted as much by Russian balletomanes yet.
Alexei Putintsev is also really getting a lot of roles and has grown so much in the last few years. He's finally been promoted to First Soloist, but honestly could be a Leading Soloist, he's definitely important to the company as well.

Bolshoi/ Promotions Asks
I saw Elya performed SL pas de deux with Rodkin as a gala..I think this is not the first time they’ve performed it together, I really hope he helps her rehearse O/O since she said multiple times that Denis teaches her/ makes her rehearse and that she will finally be given it when she is ready. Elya would make a gorgeous Odile I think
If/when she debuts it, I'm pretty confident saying they will debut together. It's a powerful marketing tactic for BT management and it will likely be more comfortable for Sevenard. I firmly believe she'd be absolutely mindblowing as Odile and I hope she'll get her chance soon.
Is the Russian ballet community fond of Kovaleva ? I don’t read any forum and from her insta it looks like she has little-normal following, considering she’s been a leading soloist for a while.
Of course, she has her super-fans, but my general perception is that she's liked only a touch more than Stepanova and Marchenkova. I do remember her account getting hacked in the past year or so, and she had to start again.
on what you were saying about Sevenard and her promotions (of lack thereof) - I feel bad for Elya. Whilst she definitely is a more bold dancer than your average M dancer, I think she’d have thrived at the Mariinsky Her placement at the Bolshoi was a political & slightly petty one, with Tsiskaridze sending her there as “revenge” for Fateyev rejecting Kovaleva. But now Kovaleva is shining in Vaziev’s eyes and Elya is def on a slower path. Esp when we know she was offered straight to soloist too
To be quite honest, Sevenard ending up at BT is a whole complicated affair. It really doesn't have much to do with Kovaleva, but more about Tsiskardize's aggressive favoritism, ambition, and hyper-promotion of her via casting, media appearances, and opportunities. Sevenard's own family and family descendency only make the target on her back bigger. Honestly, all of those factors did her no favors, she was really overexposed and everyone was waiting to watch her fail.
Just checked the bolshoi page and wow Kokoreva has also been promoted to leading soloist along with Sergeenkova! What do you think of these promotions? It’s like six or seven women now! Competition must have skyrocketed. Also Sasha Trikoz is finally a soloist!
....I honestly don't understand how BT manages their money. None of these are surprising but perhaps a bit fast but that's typical BT.
O.O I don’t understand this Sergeenkova fever at all . She is even less interesting than Kovaleva and she dances basically what Alena does, so what is the point of having her as a leading soloist/ principal? It would be much better to have both Sevenard and Kovaleva as principals.
She fits what Vaziev likes and what we've consistently seen him promote. She is an excellent adagio dancer and delivered a pretty decent Swan Lake on her first go. It wasn't perfect but of the really lanky girls that he loves, she's the most stable and is very promising. Also once Zakharova and Shipulina retire...who is gonna dance O/O? Kovaleva can't dance all the shows, they need to start preparing for the future.
I still think Sevenard will get promoted before everyone else because she's been such a steady workhorse and has bailed the BT out of disaster multiple times. However, she's had a couple of sloppier performances lately (her most recent DQ was a bit of a backslide) and needs to maintain her previous level. Honestly, I think part of this is Allash's fault for changing a lot of her variations but...I digress.
But honestly, Sevenard needs to nail a big dramatic lead or she really doesn't have an argument for promotion IMO. All she's shown right now is a rather shaky, mediocre Raymonda. She needs to debut (and blow the audience away as) either O/O or Nikiya or seriously improve her next Raymonda to be in serious consideration.
Is it just me or has Sevenard seemed to be getting messier? Ive been keeping up with all of her recent performances and especially her Kitris have hit me as not really being the cleanest. I love her so I hope it was just an off night. Her footwork just seems sloppy lately. Is it just me or has Sevenard seemed to be getting messier? Her footwork just seems sloppy lately.
I have to agree with you here. I'm not sure what it is. Is she injured or heavily overworked? Is Allash's scrambling of her variations to blame? Too much showboating and just generally neglecting the details in rehershals? Or simply a bad night?
What are some of your favorite dancers at the Bolshoi who are currently ranked as a soloist or a first soloist? I personally really like Anastasia Denisova and Margarita Shrayner.
Honestly, I had to look at the roster because they've done so many promotions lately and I was like WAIT WHAT RANK ARE THESE PEOPLE.
I would have to say my favorites at that rank are Kristina Kretova, Elonora Sevenard and Dmitry Smilevsky. I enjoy Kokoreva's dancing too.

Elizaveta kokoreva is dancing giselle again with Dmitry Smilevsky and sofia valiulina as Myrtha!!!! Eva sergeenkova will dance giselle as well with klim efimov. Òpinions??
Valiullina as Myrtha - WOW! It shows that leadership has confidence in her.
I’ve really enjoyed anything that Kokoreva has performed (that I’ve seen). I saw snippets of her Giselle and was impressed. I hope to see more…
Sergeenkova seems less sure of herself, and I noticed that she was often paired with very seasoned partners. I don’t know much about Klim Efimov (other than he’s married to Ksenia Zhiganshina) so I guess we’ll see. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Top 2018 BBA Graduates
A few weeks ago someone asked me who the top Bolshoi Ballet Academy graduates are this year. Since I don’t follow BBA, I couldn’t answer that question.
Luckily, Marina Leonova, the rector of Bolshoi Ballet Academy, recently gave an interview to Russia’s Kultura channel, in which she listed the most promising 2018 graduates. Here’s the list:
Denis Zakharov, who has danced the part of Blue Bird in the Bolshoi’s “Sleeping Beauty” while still a student.
Elizaveta Kokoreva
Dmitry Smilevski
Igor Gorelkin
Alexandra Trikoz, this year’s top graduate, according to Leonova.

Wow, in January the Bolshoi is giving three young dancers the opportunity to debut Giselle! January 12th at 12:00, Elizaveta Kokoreva is debuting the role, Eleonora Sevenard in debuting the same day at 7:00, and Eva Sergeenkova is debuting the role on January 13th! Dmitry Smilevsky is also debuting Count Albrecht on the 12th with Kokoreva!
This is also exciting because Eva has been out on injury all season so far. It will be great to see her back on stage.
