Where was your muse born?

Bash was born Sebastian James Thibodeau in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Were they the first born, middle or youngest? Are they an only child? Adopted?

Sebastian is an only child, as his parents weren’t exactly up to the task of parenthood or the responsibility entailed.

Does your muse have a favorite memory with their family?

Bash was, in essence, raised by his paternal grandmother. He and his grandmother spent a great deal of time together, particularly in her green house, which had a great deal of exotic flowers. He loved to spend time with her there, often losing track of the hours as they chatted and tended to the plants.

Does your muse get along with their family? What is the family dynamic?

Bash has a very strained relationship with his parents, particularly because they weren’t exactly parents. Both of his parents worked in the foreign service, and spent much of his life abroad, with him constantly being plucked from one country to another and then subsequently being sent back to live with his grandparents in Toronto. As an adult, they’ll speak on someone’s birthday or a holiday, but that’s the extent of it.

Does your muse have a favorite family member? Why?

His grandmother by far — she taught him of unconditional love and acceptance, and has always encouraged his dreams.

What are the names of your muse’s parents? Siblings?

Sebastian’s father is James Alexander Thibodeau, and his mother is Ronit Mofaz Thibodeau. His father is of English descent and a native-born Canadian, while his mother’s family was Mizrahi Jewish and she was raised for some years of her life in Cairo, Egypt. He was more-so raised by his paternal grandparents, though, whose names are William James Thibodeau and Emilia Jane Thibodeau.

Who does your muse take after more? Any habits?

Bash shares mannerisms of both of his parents, but in terms of his temperament and interests, he is likened more to his paternal grandfather. They both enjoy a good morning tea and to sit quietly and read the paper, a pastime they typically enjoy when he comes back to Toronto to visit them.

TASK 002: FINDING YOUR ROOTS

Where was your muse born?

Eureka, CA, born and raised, baby.

Were they the first born, middle or youngest? Are they an only child? Adopted?

Cyrus is the first born of the Nilsen clan, and has always taken that position very seriously.  He’s the epitome of an older brother, mostly in the positive ways, but in a few instances, the negative ones as well.  After him is his first sister Reina, followed by his two younger brothers Erik and Dustin respectively.  And then the Nilsen family was rounded out by the little storm known as Mia, the child of Eli Nilsen’s best friend and his god daughter.  After a fire took her father too soon, the Nilsen’s quickly changed her status from god-daughter to just daughter. 

Does your muse have a favorite memory with their family?

Perhaps it’s cheesy to say, but Cyrus’ favorite memories with his family are just the small ones.  A good family dinner where they fought over the uneven number of rolls, a Sunday spent cheering each other on at one of their numerous sports games.  A Wednesday afternoon in the Summer spent in the backyard all together instead of flung off around town with their friends. 

Does your muse get along with their family? What is the family dynamic?

The Nilsens are a tight knit group.  Togetherness and unity was something stressed to them as children, the idea that family (blood or chosen) was one’s greatest strength.  And while of course there were times when the kids fought, both a children and adults, their parents rule of never going to bed angry, was successful in keeping most fights sequestered to one day, rather than anything lengthy.  Much to his dismay, after the death of their parents in quick succession, while Cyrus had hoped the family would pull together, they started to drift apart, and he hopes to remedy that. 

Does your muse have a favorite family member? Why?

Does his son count?  If so, then yes.  If not, then no, he loves all his siblings and his parents for different reasons, but all the same amount. 

Best family vacation? The worst?

The Nilsens are a family of habits, and every other summer they’d spend two weeks up in Orca’s Island in Washington.  Never really went anywhere else, and while his siblings may have gotten tired of the same old scenery, Cyrus never did.  So much so he continued the tradition with his own son. 

What are the names of your muse’s parents? Siblings?

Who does your muse take after more? Any habits?

His nature is much more similar to his mother, but with his father’s strong influence, he tends to act more like him.  A classic case of nature versus nurture.  Eli was very purposeful in instilling his values, habits and morals into Cyrus, knowing that with his job, it was a very real possibility that one day Cyrus would be the ‘man of the house’. 

Favorite and/or least favorite family traditions?

Favorite?  Sunday night dinner.  Least favorite: Waiting until Christmas night to open presents, rather than Christmas morning

Who has the weakest bladder on road trips?

Dustin.

leland ( 36 ) is the first born, followed by his younger brother; owen ( 34 ).

Does your muse have a favorite memory with their family?

the most fond memories with his family had to be centred around their summers which typically included visiting his paternal grandparents ( who had relocated to france a few years after his birth ).

Does your muse get along with their family? What is the family dynamic?

the family dynamic was pretty healthy, to be honest. from what he can recall, his father was absolutely obsessed with their mother; always bringing home flowers, her favourite snack, or just verbalizing how much he cared about her. both of his parents were pretty easy going, extremely loving, and saw family time as the upmost importance. they supported their kids as best as they could, signed them up for any sport or interest that they had at the time, and talked to them normally; not emphasizing that they were children. both henry and jo both found it important that the kids had basic skills; from learning two languages, to knowing how to sew a button onto a pair of pants. their goal was to create to young men who were pretty well rounded, and well mannered. 

the relationship between brothers is fairly cliché; moments of play, moments of fights. but over all, their relationship was pretty strong. they were essentially each others best friends growing up, especially once they moved ( only being a few years apart ). they made friends with similar friend groups, and owen would always sit in on leland’s band rehearsals in the garage. 

as leland grew older, and once he moved away, his contact with his family slightly dimmed. he would see them for the important holidays, and they understood that he was busy between all of his commitments; but once his substance abuse became a true issue, the communication definitely lowered. as of recently, he has barely touched based, still being a little ashamed of what has transpired. he lets them know the most minimal details; how he is ( which is usually skewed in some way ), where he’s currently living, that sort of thing. 

Does your muse have a favorite family member? Why?

it’s hard for him to place one above the other, since he adores them all for different reasons. but leland would say that both of his parents are stuck in that position. his father was a musician, and taught him piano at an early age. he was a very involved dad; always showing up for the kids as much as he possibly could, and making sure they got the attention they craved. but henry put his wife above all else, and that was a very important lesson for leland to watch. 

with his mother, her resilience to continue on and support her family ( especially in trying times ), was always something leland respected. she put them first, made sure they were well looked after, and had everything they needed to live comfortably ( even if that meant sacrificing some time to take on extra responsibilities as work ). 

Best family vacation? The worst?

the best vacation that the graves family ended up taking was probably their trip to disneyland paris. the boys had wanted to go for quite some time, and it actually was the last trip the family took together prior to their father passing away. 

the worst had to be the one time they tried camping. it rained the whole weekend, and it was so bloody cold because of that, that they ended up packing up and going home a lot earlier than planned. leland still isn’t the biggest fan of camping. 

Who does your muse take after more? Any habits?

if anything, leland strives to be half of the man his father was. his loyalty definitely comes from witnessing henry bend over backwards for anyone he considered dear to his heart. but even in a more detailed fashion, when he plays music— he stands like his father did, and he has the most concentrated expression upon his face while he plays.

additionally, his mother had a huge tendency to play with her hair, and leland definitely picked up on that one pretty quickly. 

Favorite and/or least favorite family traditions?

as simplistic as it may be, one of leland’s favourite traditions was that every saturday morning there would always be a stack of freshly made pancakes. his mother made the best pancakes around, in his opinion— and he tries to keep up the with tradition still to this day. 

his least favourite tradition would have to go to his mother insisting that owen and himself posed beside each other every year on their first day of school. leland just found it to be incredibly cringe-worthy, especially as he became a teenager. 

Is there a family game night? What was the board game of choice? How did it go over?

game night wasn’t really a regular thing in their household; movie nights were more up their alley. but on the rare occasion that they did play, it was probably something like jenga. 

Who has the weakest bladder on road trips?

his brother owen definitely takes the cake for that one; but mind you, his belief in that is purely based on trips taken as kids. though, leland will never let that go.

Where was your muse born?

Annie was born in San Francisco, California. 

Were they the first born, middle or youngest? Are they an only child? Adopted?

Annie was Mel and Ted’s first and only child. 

Does your muse have a favorite memory with their family?

It’s trite to say all of them, but there are truly so many things that Annie holds dear that she never thought were anything special in the moment. Still, the thing she holds on to the most as an adult is the sight of her parents slow dancing in the living room to Ray Charles while she sat at the top of the steps. 

Does your muse get along with their family? What is the family dynamic?

As the only child, Annie is extremely close with her immediate family--her parents. She largely has no relationship with her maternal grandparents, and her paternal grandparents she isn’t particularly close to, although she still sees them occasionally. She has aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides she hardly sees but stays Facebook friends with. 

Does your muse have a favorite family member? Why?

Annie will forever hold a space in her heart for the person that knew her first--her mom. She worried a lot after her mom’s passing that that would be hurtful to her dad, but if there’s anyone that understands that loss as well as she, it’s Ted.

Best family vacation? The worst?

The best family vacations were always road trips along the coast--Annie enjoyed San Diego the most, with the Monterey Aquarium coming in close second. The worst, by far, was the trip to Disneyland Ted and Mel attempted to take Annie on after Mel’s diagnosis. It...didn’t go well.

What are the names of your muse’s parents? Siblings?

Annie’s maternal grandparents are Emma and Gerald Clark, and her paternal grandparents are Yáng and Xioaming. Melinda had two sisters, Sophie and Rebecca, and Ted has one brother, Alan.

Who does your muse take after more? Any habits?

Annie would love to believe that she was Mel through and through, but the older she gets, the more she realizes she and Ted share a great deal in common--including their propensity for poorly managing their feelings.

Favorite and/or least favorite family traditions?

Annie’s favorite traditions were borne from her mother’s propensity for celebrating the most inane holidays, the one that no one even realizes exist-- think: National Coloring Book Day, National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, National Roller Coaster Day, etc. etc.--sporadically throughout the year. Her dad, for his part, enthusiastically played along. Her least favorite was always having to make the drive back to San Francisco to visit her grandparents, where, after breaking a vase, she was disallowed from touching anything in their house again. 

Is there a family game night? What was the board game of choice? How did it go over?

No designated family game night, but they were avid board game players (particularly after Mel got sick and couldn’t do much else but hole up on the couch). Mel’sfavorite was Scrabble, Ted’s was Trivial Pursuit, and Annie’s was Scattegories.

Who has the weakest bladder on road trips?

Ted Lim, by a mile--the man drinks too much black coffee.
