is it a sign of bad character design if a character doesn't have any kind of accesoire on them? like tattos/piercings or any kind of. i kinda feel everytime i creat one without such things, they look boring or have nothing special on them... is it important or just a case of personal taste?
Hmm…
Having no accessories or tattoos isabsolutely not a sign of bad character design :) But at the sametime, you are following a good train of logic, I just think you needto look into it a little more:
You say that when you create acharacter without accessories or tattoos, they feel feel boring orhave nothing special to them. I think this is a very good insight tohave, and although your solution for adding accessories and tattoosisn’t wrong, in this case I think it’s more of a crutch thanaddressing the true issue.
(more under the cut because this endedup being insanely long)
I don’t know what kind of art style youtend to lean towards (more cartoony or more manga type stuff orsomething like that) but I’m going to assume you’re working withgenerally human characters. If you feel like your characters feelboring or like there’s nothing special about them, then that issomething to try and address, yes. However, using something like atattoo or an accessory or piercing does not actually solve theproblem. What you’re looking for is a way to give your character apersonality that comes across in how they look. And so the firstthing you need to ask yourself is; what kind of personality does yourcharacter have? And does having a tattoo or accessory compliment thatpersonality, and if it was removed, would the character’s personalitystill be obvious to the audience?
I’m playing Persona 4 at the moment, soLet’s look at one of my favourite characters in the game; KanjiTatsumi.
Tumblr media
So Let’s look at Kanji’s characterdesign, which has both accessories and a tattoo. Kanji’s outfitchanges in the game depending on whether you’re at school or if it’sthe weekend, whether it’s summer or one of the colder seasons, andvarious other situations. Kanji’s accessories change throughout thegame as well. Especially his necklaces. However the change is barelynoticeable and don’t define how he looks. Also, he has a tattoo onhis left shoulder of a skull and cross-bones. However, when he’swearing his jacket you don’t see it. Again, it does not define hischaracter design.
Ok, so what can you tell about KanjiJUST by his design when removing his tattoo and his accessoriescompletely?
Well most obvious is that he looks alittle scary.
His hair is dyed bright blonde (whichwould be even more intimidating in Japan where he’s from for culturalreasons I’m not gonna go into here) and he’s got it slicked back.Combined with his very sharp facial features, it makes him lookpretty rough. He’s got small, sharp eyes and eyebrows that jutinwards harshly. His nose is also pointed, and his jaw is a littlemore square than the other main characters, even the boys, who havemore rounded or pointed jaw-lines. Then there are smaller detailslike his scar. However, like with his accessories, if you removedthat scar he’d still obviously be Kanji. (I also noticed for thefirst time while looking at these that his nose is pierced. SomethingI never noticed before)
All of his facial features, as well ashis neutral expression and even the way he stands all tell us a lotabout him as a character before we even get to things like clothes, tattoos, accessories, piercings or scars. Kanji is obvious a roughperson, probably a troublemaker and seems like the kind of person whogets into fights a lot. Now you add the kind of colours and clotheshe wears. Kanji generally only wears black with details on hisclothes usually being red or orange. He also wears a lot of tank topswith flaming skulls on them, as well as black jeans and heeled boots. This emphasises his personality, and makes you wonder “is he in agang? Is he a biker maybe? Is he into metal perhaps?”. Then you addthings like his multiple piercings and his tattoo (He might have morethan one? I’m not even sure.) But even if those things weren’t there,we already have a picture of what kind of person Kanji is (or thekind of person people in the story thinks he is) based on hisappearance. The things like his tattoo, piercings and scar furtheremphasise that, but they are not what makes his character design whatit is. They merely tell us even more of what we already know. That ifthis kid was in your high-school, you’d probably want to avoid him.
It may also make him look like a bit ofan edgelord. Like he’s trying TOO hard to look scary andintimidating. And you know what? In Kanji’s case, that’s absolutelytrue. Kanji looks like he’s trying SO HARD to be scary, because heactually is. Kanji is afraid of people rejecting him. Especiallysince… well… Kanji is almost certainly Pansexual, if not bi, andwhen you first meet him he’s agonizing whether he might now just beouright gay. He also loves sewing and knitting, and as a little kidpreferred playing with dolls and cooking to what the other boys did.So he grew up with boys making fun of him, and girls telling him he’sweird. As a result, Kanji grows up into a 15 year old who has becomeso afraid of rejection that he tries his hardest to scare people awayfrom getting to know him. So his character design looks like it’strying too hard to be edgy, but with Kanji that’s actually onpurpose! Because KANJI is trying too hard to be edgy!
Now let’s look at some characters withno tattoos or accessories. (I’m sticking to the anime style just as abasis of comparison since I was using Kanji as my first example)
Tumblr media
Say hello to my OTHER big love of ananime series Gay Baseball Okiku Furrikabute (Or BigWindup) Or Oofuri for short.
Oofuri is a sports anime, in this caseBaseball. Which means the characters most of the time either weartheir school uniforms, or their baseball uniforms. Which all lookidentical. None of them have accessories or tattoos to distinguishthem from each other, and heck most of them have the exact same haircolour and almost exactly the same hairstyle! (save for a couple)
Tumblr media
However, look at the above picture, especially the two main characters of Abe and Mihashi on the left. You can probably tell a LOT about them as characters just by theirdesigns, but especially by their expressions and posture. Abe looksserious. His eyes are heavy lidded, but his eyebrows are sharplyslanted inwards. His hair is also very dark, darker than most of theother boys, as is his eyes. It gives him a more mature, serious look.Mihashi is the complete opposite. His pose and expression immediatelylet us know he’s a very nervous boy. His eyes are very large, butalso light in colour, and his irises are not big and deep like Izumion the far right (The one with the freckles and big ears). Hiseyebrows are also crooked, making him look nervous an unsure. Hismouth also makes it look like he’s permanently chewing his lip orthat he’s tense. But his hair gives him a softness as well. It looksa lot more fluffy that the other boys’ and looks much softer andpoofier. It’s also obviously much lighter in colour. Along with therest of his features, Mihashi seems like a very anxious but probablysweet boy.
Izumi looks like he would be theyounger, more boyish type of character, but his expression and posemakes him seem more serious than his features would imply, whileSuyama on the bottom Right looks much more mature than any of theothers because of his smaller eyes and more defined nose. As well ashis shaved hair and small eyebrows. He’s probably older than theothers and pretty level-headed. However, there’s something curious inhis expression. He’s not trying to stare you down like Izumi abovehim. He just seems curious as to why the audience is there.
However, that is not to say tattoos oraccessories can’t be an important part of a character’s entiredesign, but again, the question comes back to “how do these addedelements compliment my character’s personality” and not “whataccessories can make my character unique?”
Here we have Jack, from Mass Effect 2.
Tumblr media
Her tattoos are a VERY obvious part ofher design, and if they weren’t there it’d harm her character designa LOT and change her complete look. She’d still be striking with herinsistence to walk around topless and her shaved head, but hertattoos are what we see first. But why does she have them?
Jack is an INCREDIBLY damaged characterin the game. Much like Kanji, she pushes people away and tries tokeep everyone at a distance. However, unlike Kanji who uses his looksas a shield, Jack embraces her look as she feels it’s a reflection ofherself. She sees herself as a tough bitch no-one should mess with, and she projects that. She’s lived a life of abuse, betrayal andviolence, and so she’s developed defences to literally keep herselfalive. In a world of gangsters, casual murder, rape and peoplethrowing their partners to the wolves, Jack has decided her only wayto survive is to be king dick of shit mountain. And so her tattoosand accessories are a way to broadcast that she’s, essentially, completely fucked up. She’ll stab you without a second thought andshe wants you to know that. They’re also a “fuck you” to normalsociety. Jack believes most people are full of shit, but the peoplewho fit in with society and act all nice are the scariest and mostdangerous of all. She sees them as even lower than the criminals shesurrounds herself with, because they “pretend” to be good peoplewhen really they’re just hypocrites who’d eat each other alive. SoJack also uses her tattoos and accessories to mark herself asrejecting “normal life”.
Tumblr media
In mass Effect 3, her design haschanged. She still has her tattoos, but her overall look hassoftened.
She’s growing out her hair (at least toan extent. She’s not gonna go full housewife on you) and she dressesmore modestly. However, she does so while still exposing a lot of hertattoos, and her jacket is leather and studded. But since she’strying to take steps to be a better person, deal with her pasttraumas and connect with other people, her design is less like she’sa psycho murderer, and more like she’s a hardcore punk you couldbelieve yourself seeing in the real world.
Her tattoos and overall design allspawn from her internal thoughts, feelings and personality, and sochange according to it. Her tattoos do set her apart from the otherfemale characters in the game, but they are dictated by how she iswritten, not the other way around.
And THEN…. you have Tidus…
Tumblr media
I’m sorry people who like this game andthis character but… Tidus’ character design is a mess.
All that there appears to BE to Tidus’design is accessories. And yet not a single one of them seems toreally tell us anything about him other than “this is a FinalFantasy main Character.” And yes, you can probably apply that tonot only a lot of characters in FFX but in Final Fantasy as a whole(Zidane isn’t much better in his design. And FF9 is my favourite!)But at least with the other characters in FFX they give us SOMEinsight…. kinda. Yuna looks very traditional and demure. Rikkulooks like a bubbly almost Ganguro style girl. Auron looksno-nonsense and almost like a samurai. Lulu looks like a darkbrooding goth girl. But what does Tidus’ design tell us other thanhe’s a main character in a JRPG?
He has pants that… don’t have thesame length to them. Why? Is there any reason? Does it tell usanything about his personality? He’s got that cropped jacket. He’sgot big clunky shoes. He’s got finger-less gloves which is probablythe closest to making sense since he’s an athlete and they look likesport equipment. But honestly, if you undressed him, took off all hisaccessories and took away his blitzball… how would you know thischaracter is Tidus? The designs of FFX are a little too photorealistic to be recognisable on style alone. And Tidus has no designdetails about him that make me think that he is Tidus. (Spoonyfamously pointed out that he basically looks like Meg Ryan) He’s ablonde dude and erm… that’s it?
So Tidus’ design relies COMPLETELY onaccessories to make him stand out and recogniseable.
And THAT is bad character design.Regardless of the fact that his accessories make little to no sensein any way shape or form for what we DO know about his character(He’s an underwater athlete but wears heavy clunky clothes. He broodsaout his father but his clothes are yellow and sunny), his clothesare the only thing that makes him recognisable as himself. And thefact is that Tidus, really, doesn’t have any personality. He’s “JRPGProtag” personality. He’s upbeat for the most part, angsty when theplot calls for it, has a tragic back story tm which doesn’t seem toaffect him in any real way outside of complaining about his fathernow and then, and he’s in love with Yuna. And these, honestly, wouldall be ok. Because he’s the main character in a video game and we’resuppose to project ourselves onto him. The problem is that even MainCharacters in other JRPGs that we’re suppose to project ourselvesonto have SOME kind of logic or unifying factor to their design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuu from Persona 4′s hair is silver and straight cut, his eyes aresilver and he generally wears very monochromatic outfits, usuallyleaning to white and grey. He doesn’t clutter his outfit with manyaccessories, and what he does wear seem mainly to be practical (likea wristwatch). Persona 3’s main character looks COMPLETELY different. His dark blue choppy hair covers his face, he always carries hisheadphones with him (and he prefers those weird clip-on headphones). He’s obviouslymore casual and laid back, but with a slight rock vibe to him.
So back to Tidus… what exactly unifies his design? What does it tell us about his role in the story and personality? (Since unlike Yuu and the Persona MC, Tidus has a personality outside of his player proxy status) If he removed hisaccessories would he still be recognisable? If we kept his designexactly the way it is but gave him Luffy from One Piece’spersonality, would his design have to change? If we gave him a completely different outfit that looked nothing like his canon one in any way at all, would it even matter?
Tumblr media
(btw this is not Tidus. This is Vaan from FF Tactics A2)
The only time we could say we’d need tochange his design is if we went in a hard opposite direction. Like ifwe wanted to make him a broody edgelord we’d probably not have asmuch yellow in his design…. even though he IS broody and angsty inthe game??? Does the bright yellow and blonde hair really scream“existential crises with daddy issues” to anyone???
ugh. What a mess.
So, as a VERY long winded answer;characters don’t have to have tattoos or accessories to have gooddesigns. Nor do tattoos and accessories make designs bad. What makesa design bad is if you are using tattoos and accessories as a crutchbecause you cannot find a way to project your character’s personalityin how they look, in which case you may need to look into what yourcharacter’s personality actually IS. And then examine how you cantake that personality and apply it to their physical appearance andlook. Not just in what they wear and how their hair is styled, butalso in their face, body, posture and expressions. What kind ofcolours would suit their personality best? What about theirbackground or situation would dictate how they look or what theywear? What kind of person are they?
And then, FINALLY, you can askyourself; Do I need a tattoo or an accessory or piercing to enhancewhat I have already put into the design?
Because in the end that’s what tattoosand accessories should be: an enhancement of the character that’salready there. Because THAT’S what’s gonna make your characterinteresting and special. Who they are, what their situation is, wherethey’re from, where they’re going and what are their goals. What aretheir quirks, their likes, their dislikes, their hang-ups, theirstrengths, their fears, their hopes.
A character’s design is how an artistintroduces a character to the audience and what kind of person theyare without having to explain it with words. It gives us a startingpoint to get to know them and what kind of story they are here totell.
If you want to expand on your characterdesigns and not rely on things like tattoos and accessories, Isuggest looking up different character designs and look at how theirfaces and bodies are drawn. If you can find them in different outfitsthat’s a big help too! Look up tutorials on things like facialstructure. Look at your favourite animated movies and take note ofhow the different characters’ faces, bodies and especially their bodylanguage are done. Look at the way they stand, the kind ofexpressions they tend to pull, what the structure of their face islike, how they tend to move, how they stand perfectly still. Whatshapes are used in their designs. What the art style looks like. AndI would also suggest not using too much modern anime for referenceexcept those that have a very distinct look to their characters. Alot of modern anime use exactly the same designs for theircharacters, relying on hair colour and clothes to make them standout. (which is again, poor design)
Honestly a very GOOD anime to look atis Osomatsu-San. All 6 man characters are identical. However you canimmediately tell who is who based purely on their expressions andbody language as well as very small minute details. So even when theyall wear the same outfit, it’s extremely easy to tell who is who.
Tumblr media
Anyway… I hope that at least KIND OFanswers your question? Maybe? I’m sorry this is so long but in thiscase I feel the best way to learn is simply through analysingcharacters with GOOD designs and really looking into why they work. And compare them with bad designs and see why the bad designs do NOTwork. Because I don’t think your problem is that you “need”tattoos and accessories to make your characters interesting. I thinkyour problem is you have discovered a weakness in your art skills, and you want to improve upon it. But you’re unsure how, and you feelmaybe tattoos and accessories could be an answer. I feel, however,it’s merely a bandaid. Where it may make it seem a little better, butit doesn’t actually fix the underlying issue.
Just keep at it. Study the kind ofdesigns you like, adapt the parts you are drawn to in your own work, and over time, if you keep at it, your designs will naturally improveto where tattoos and accessories will no longer seem as big anecessity as you feel they are now :) you can still use them as muchas you want, but it will be to strengthen your design, not hold itup.
And I’m really gonna stop typing nowbecause this is insanely long.

Your Autobiography.
Little kiddies. (Grades 1-5) What color hair did you have? Very dark brown, almost black.
Did you wear glasses or have contacts? Yep, got glasses in the 3rd grade
Did you have braces? Nope
Did you go to pre-school or go straight to kindergarten? I went to pre-school for two years before kindergarten.
Out of grades 1-5, which one was the best for you? 2nd, for sure. I was at a 4-H school that year and everything was just better there - the kids, the curriculum, the teachers, the playground. Then I got moved to a hardcore, college preparatory school and everything went downhill.
Did you have a lot of friends, or just a couple? I had lots in 2nd grade, but when we moved to the city in 3rd grade I barely had any. I had maybe 1 or 2.
What were your favorite shows? Spongebob, Sailor Moon, Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd & Eddy, Dexter’s Lab, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Lizzie McGuire, That’s So Raven, The Amanda Show, the list goes on and on....
What were your favorite movies? The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, Life Sized (I was kind of obsessed with Lindsey Lohan, if you couldn’t tell)
Did you read Goosebumps? Rarely. If anything I read “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” more, which now that I’m adult I realize HOW FUCKED UP IT IS THAT THAT IS A CHILDREN’S BOOK.
What was your favorite thing to do on weekends? Watch cartoons, play online computer games (like Neopets - woo!), draw, write stories, and have sleepovers. Damn, I miss being a kid.
Pre-Teens. (Grades 6-9) What color hair did you have? Dark brown, still
What color hair did you want? I wanted blonde highlights at the time.
Was your Middle School a seperate school from Junior High? No, they were considered the same thing where I went. Grades 6-8 was all Middle School.
Did you have a lot of boyfriends/girlfriends? I had one “boyfriend” in 7th grade.
Did you still watch Disney movies? Duhh. I STILL watch Disney movies and I’m 25, so.
What kind of music did you listen to? A mix of everything. I definitely went through phases though. 6th grade was hard/alt rock because I was trying to be a goth for some reason, 7th grade I became preppy and started listening to hip hop and pop, and then 8th grade is when I discovered “emo” music and got heavily obsessed with that, but still listened to pop and hip hop.
What were some of your interests? AIM, Xanga, music videos (loved Fuse), the show Degrassi, Abercrombie, Starbucks frappuccinos, Etnies skater shoes, boys, MySpace
What was your favorite animal? Dolphin
What was your favorite color? Blue, then changed to pink, then changed to black
Did you draw? That was actually when I started losing interest in drawing. << Same
What was your favorite subject? I’d have to say social studies.
Did you have any piercings? No.
Did you wear make-up to school? Just lipgloss in the 7th grade and eyeliner in the 8th grade.
What kinds of clothes did you wear? Anything from Abercrombie or Hollister. Then in 8th grade all I wore was hoodies, jeans, and converse or skater shoes. Lol.
What did you do on the weekends? Hang out at friend’s houses, go to the mall or the movies
Smells Like… Teeeenagerrrrs. (Grades 10-12) Did you like your high school? Meh.
Was it as bad as they were on TV? Nooo, not that bad. It was just, meh.
What color hair did you have? Freshmen year was 9th grade for us, and I had red streaks in my bangs because I thought I was edgy.
Did you have any piercings? Just earrings.
…How about tattoos? Nope.
What age did you learn to drive? 16
When did you get your license? 17
What was your first car? '99 Chrysler 300
What was your style? It varied. I went through an emo phase in 9th grade and that’s how I dressed, but I got over it and started dressing like a bum basically. Yoga pants, sweatshirts, and uggs err’day.
Did you have a lot of friends or just a few? I had a pretty decently sized group of friends.
What did you do on weekends? Football/basketball games, homecomings, hang out at friend’s houses, go shopping or to the movies, go to the park and mess around, go to “parties”.
Did you have a lot of boyfriends/girlfriends or did you have one or two? I had one towards the end of junior year through my senior year, but we were never official. I don’t even know what we were.
What were some of your favorite bands? The Spill Canvas, My Chemical Romance, From First to Last (freshmen year), Taking Back Sunday, The Academy Is...
What college were you considering? Ball State. Of course I ended up staying local.
Did you get along with teachers, etc? For the most part. There were a few difficult ones.
Young Adults. (College years) What did you look like? I was SKINNYYYY when I graduated high school. I also had dyed my hair black, and had dark skin from tanning all the time. I also actually cared about my appearance back then and would constantly straighten my hair, do my make up, and pick out outfits.
When did you first move out of your parents’ house? Right when college started since I chose to stay in the dorms.
What college did you end up going to? UC.
What kind of music did you like? Don’t judge me, but I was really into Kesha, 3OH!3, and Katy Perry at that point. And DRAKE. I was obsessed with Drake. My music taste was kind of trash in college, but it went along with my lifestyle :)
Did you like college? I loved it, up until junior year. Then it felt more like a prison.
How long were you there? (2 years, 4 years, mooore) Five years. I had to re-do my junior year because I became severely clinically depressed.
Careers. (Any time of your life) What was your first job? My first job ever was a cashier at Stein Mart, but my first “big girl job” was here at the hospital.
Did you like it? I really enjoyed it when I first started, but it started to wear on me after a while. The customers were all older, rich women and constantly had a bug up their butt. And some of the managers were awful.
Are you still there? Noo, I left that place after maybe 6 months.
What do you do now? I’m a research coordinator.
Do you like it? For the most part. I do a lot of different things at my job which is nice because it doesn’t ever get boring and I work flexible hours, but it can also be a bit unpredictable and unstructured which I don’t like. I also don’t get paid super well, so there’s that.
What do you want to do? I want to get MS in business psychology and do something in that field.
Odds and ends. Were you a loud baby or a quiet one? I was loud when I wasn’t being held or paid attention to. My mom said I was fine in public though.
Did you collect anything growing up? Movie tickets and Chinese fortunes.
Do you still have anything from it? I kept a bunch of them in a memorabilia box.
What was your first IM screen name? liltashie92. DONT. JUDGE.
When did you first hear about Myspace? When I was in 7th grade.
Did you have a VF? (VampireFreaks.) Nope.
Do you party a lot? Rarely.
Did you? I did all throughout college, and the first year of being post-grad.
When did you get your first tattoo? Don’t have one.
Have you ever dyed your hair? I’m pretty much always dyeing it.
Did you study any languages (other than the one you were raised to speak)? Just Spanish.
Are you still into the things you were into when you were 12? Some of them. I mean, I took surveys like this then and I do them now, hahaha.
How about 15? Eh, yeah, I suppose. Honestly, I have more in common with my 12 year old self than my 15 year old self....
Do you listen to the same bands you did growing up? I do, every now and then. Currently, I have a thing for 70′s and 80′s music though.
Were your parents cool parents or were they strict? Strict. As in, I was never allowed to go to concerts unless they listened to the band first and approved it.
Have you ever been in a car accident? Yes. Nothing major, although I did total my car in 2011.
What was your favorite food as a kid? It’s always been cheeseburgers.
What is it now? Cheeseburgers.

Saudade: Ch1
Dating Josh was honestly everything you could ever want it to be. Two years of the greatest moments of your entire life. You couldn’t even imagine being with anyone else. All your other boyfriends and girlfriends, small flings, stupid one night stands, it meant nothing. Josh was like your modern day Prince Charming. While he might not be the typical fancy haired, twinkling eyed, sharp dressed, perfectly postured gentleman, he was just as special. He had hair that changed color almost as frequently as the weather, mocha eyes that squinted and widened in just the right ways, a rather edgy and modern punk fashion sense, a cheesy humor, and a kind heart. You still remembered the moment you met as if it was just yesterday.
“What the fuck?” you cursed, tripping over your own feet and spilling the coffee cup in your hand to the floor, toppling onto the sidewalk, your palms skidding with the pavement.
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry!” a voice cried behind you. Before you knew it, two hands were helping you to your feet, sputtering out apologies. “I didn’t look where I was going, oh my goodness, I am so sorry.”
“It’s fine,” you muttered, brushing yourself off before looking up, staring into the most beautiful eyes you had ever seen. You were face to face with a guy who looked about your age, blue semi-curly hair, nose ring, gages, a snapback, NASA t-shirt, ripped jeans, and sneakers. He stared at you for a moment before reaching down to grab his cellphone, which you assumed had fallen out of his hand when he had bumped into you, as well as his skateboard.
“Texting and skateboarding,” he explained, turning red with embarrassment and letting out a nervous laugh. “Probably not the best decision.”
“Yeah,” you nodded slowly.
“I’m super sorry about that coffee,” he cringed. “You okay? You took quite the fall.”
“I’m fine,” you reassured. “Don’t worry about me.” You glanced at the spilled coffee on the ground.
“You sure?” he inquired.
“I’m good, I don’t know about my coffee,” you chuckled.
“I’m really sorry about that,” he sighed. “Um, how about I make it up to you? There’s a coffee shop down the street. If you’re not in a rush to get anywhere, maybe we could get you another one? It’s on me.”
“Sounds great,” you gave a light smile. “I was just heading to my apartment anyways.”
“I’m super sorry,” he repeated.
“It’s fine, stop apologizing,” you rolled your eyes. “It was just an accident. I’m quite the klutz myself, so I can relate.”
“Got it,” he relaxed his shoulders. “I’m Josh by the way.”
“Y/n,” you introduced, shaking his hand. You both exchanged a grin before walking towards the coffee shop, spilling out your life stories piece by piece, not knowing what great future destiny had planned for the two of you.
A small accident on the sidewalk transformed into an exchange of numbers in a coffee shop, which transitioned into regularly grabbing breakfast together each week, eventually evolving into attending a couple of his shows, and after a bunch of teasing from Tyler and several of your own friends, an official first date.
“A carnival,” you smirked when he led you towards the Ferris Wheel. “Leave it to someone like Josh Dun to take me someplace strange for a first date.”
“Why? You don’t like cotton candy and popcorn?” he raised an eyebrow teasingly, squeezing your hand he had been holding as you traveled down the boardwalk.
“I don’t know, it’s just unusual,” you shrugged. “I was expecting the whole fancy restaurant dinner or adorable little park picnic or something like that.”
“That’s so cliché,” he rolled his eyes. “Come on, we already exchanged numbers in a café. Isn’t that textbook enough for you?”
“Don’t get me wrong,” you giggled. “I love unusual.” You kissed him on the cheek and watched as he blushed, glancing at you and giving a small smile before you stepped in line to ride the wheel.
Josh spent the entire evening with you, winning you small plush animals, buying you funnel cake, traveling with you through a mirror maze, taking pictures of you riding the carousel, painting your faces, and even getting some animal balloons from a clown. You both ended up straying away from the boardwalk and sitting down by the beach, taking off your shoes and going for a late night walk by the shoreline, holding hands and talking about your favorite things in the world.
“I really like sunsets,” you explained. “The streaks of color and how they settle in the sky, the way the sunlight filters through the clouds, the entire peacefulness of it, it’s beautiful.”
“I like cats,” Josh added. “They’re so fluffy and they make adorable purring sounds and I think they have super cool eyes. They’re neat.”
“Finding money in the pockets of your jeans,” you laughed. “Like when you’re doing laundry or putting on an old pair of pants and you reach into your pockets and find money you forgot was there. That’s a great feeling.”
“You know what else is a great feeling?” Josh asked. “Spending an evening with a lovely lady like you, being able to hold her hand and look into her eyes, walk with her alongside the ocean, and know that you truly love her.”
“Yeah?” you wondered, pausing your walking and looking at him for a moment.
“Definitely,” he nodded. There was a pause. “I love you, y/n.”
“Well that’s lucky for you,” you grinned. “Because I’m pretty sure I love you too, Josh. And that’s one of my favorite things in the entire world.”
“What?” he raised an eyebrow.
“Loving you,” you rolled your eyes. You stared at each other, as if searching for something, before he cupped your face with his hands, studying your face for a second before kissing you, placing his lips to yours and letting the rest of the world fade away.
Since then, your small bud of feelings for Josh blossomed into a passionate flower of love. You started to spend all your time together, going to almost all of his shows, watching entire television series together, falling asleep cuddling on the couch, accompanying him to interviews and award shows, and even dying his hair red and pink. You spent hours drinking iced coffee, singing Blink-182, shopping for beanies and snapbacks, watching Stranger Things episodes, going to the pet store just to play with the cats, making occasional trips to the tattoo parlor, and eating countless amounts of burritos. It was the smell of bubblegum and having sweet sex and wearing his sweatshirts and silly texts and late night city walks and open mouthed kisses and trying to learn to skateboard and penny fountain wishes. Loving Josh was everything you had hoped it to be and more.
“Good morning,” he greeted in a sing song voice, kissing your forehead that morning. “Wake up sleepy head.”
“Ugh,” you groaned, fluttering open your eyelids. “It’s way too early. It’s like seven in the morning.”
“You know it’s our two year anniversary,” he smiled. “Big day.”
“I know,” you chuckled, pressing your lips to his. “How could I forget?”
“I was thinking, I don’t know, maybe we could go to Disney World?” he raised an eyebrow.
“What?” you widened your eyes.
“I sort of already got tickets,” he grinned. “Our flight leaves at ten.”
“You’re crazy,” you rolled your eyes, pulling him in for a kiss. “Wait. Are you serious?”
“Definitely,” he nodded. “I scheduled everything. We can stay for three days, go on all the rides, pose with the characters, watch the fireworks, the whole experience. It’s going to be great.”
“I fucking love you,” you beamed. “I also can’t believe you.”
“Surprise,” he laughed.
“You’re the best,” you kissed him again.
“I just wanted to take my very own princess to the magical castle,” he shrugged. “Special occasion.”
It was days like these that reminded you just how much you loved Josh. The adorable plans and surprises, his childlike awe and innocence, his contagious laughter and smile, everything about him. He even bought you matching Mickey Mouse ears to wear and took you to see your favorite Disney princess. A couple weeks after, you were sitting on the couch when the topic came up.
“I think you’re hiding something,” you murmured as you were cuddling on the couch, just having finished a season of X Files. “You’ve been quiet lately.”
“I’m fine,” Josh dismissed, but you turned around to face him, looking him in the eyes.
“You’re not telling me something,” you insisted. “Josh.” There was a moment of silence.
“I didn’t want to tell you until it was official,” he sighed. “I still don’t really know for sure.”
“You’re leaving for tour,” you stated flatly. “Aren’t you?”
“Maybe,” he shrugged. “I mean, Tyler and Mark are still working out dates, but yeah.”
“When are you leaving?” you asked.
“Next month,” he explained. His voice went soft. “Or next week.”
“Next week?” your eyes went wide. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner,” he sighed. “We wanted to surprise the fans with a tour and we’ve been practicing and stuff and we’re releasing dates tomorrow but-”
“But you just didn’t think it was important to tell me,” you muttered, obviously agitated with him.
“Y/n, it’s not like I was keeping a secret or anything,” he argued. “I just didn’t know. Okay? Please don’t be angry at me. I just, well, I was afraid to tell you. I didn’t want you to be mad, but I guess you already are, so, I don’t know. I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine,” you took a deep breath. “I overreacted. I’m just sad to see you go. I’m going to miss you.”
“You know I’d take you along if I could,” he mumbled, pressing a kiss to your lips. “If Ty would let me, I’d wrap you in my arms and carry you everywhere I go. Even on stage. I’d let you sit on my lap as I play the drums, be up there on stage with me, right next to my heart.”
“You’re silly,” you rolled your eyes. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he gave a small smile.  “You know what else I’m going to miss, though?”
“What?” you raised an eyebrow.
“This body,” he smirked, grazing his hand against your side. “The way your lips feel against mine, how sweet they taste, what miracles they perform when they’re all over my skin…”
“Yeah?” you flickered your eyes up to meet him.
“Yeah,” he nodded. Josh slipped a hand underneath your shirt and up your back slowly, sliding his fingers underneath your bra and beginning to unhook it. “I think we better do a little something special before I leave, right?”
“Definitely,” you whispered.
Everything with Josh was sweet. Being with Josh was a warm cup of café coffee or a sugary tuft of carnival cotton candy. Each touch of his hand was a brushstroke of a painter, every kiss a spoonful of honey, all of his movements as if the light breeze that blows on a sunny spring day. So of course, sex with Josh was always just as sweet. “Lift your arms for me, baby,” he mumbled, slowly inching the fabric of your shirt up your arms, then taking the time to kiss you on the lips again. He trailed his mouth down your jaw, your neck, and towards your breasts, swiftly unclasping your bra and delicately sliding it from your arms as well. Undressing each other was as if performing a graceful waltz, each move just a part of the dance, every thrust of the hips a simple sashay, each roll over a graceful twirl, all movements combined in a beautiful choreography, intertwined with the symphony of your heartbeats and breathing. It was slow and simple and so raw and pure, the most amazing feeling in the world simply compacted into one human being, and he was in your arms, against your body, within you, overwhelming you and taking over, and you savored every second of it.
“I want you,” you mumbled against his neck as you bunched up his shirt and slowly slid it upwards, over his head, tossing it to the side before traveling your lips down his chest. You tugged down his shorts and he lifted you up for a moment to kiss you again, his hands finding your hips and gently sliding his thumbs underneath the waistband of your leggings, hooking his fingers around your panties and inching them both down your thighs, his hand traveling towards your core and making you hum with delight. He brushed past your folds for a second to slide his fingers through your wetness before tugging down your leggings and panties to your ankles, helping you kick them off and then climbing on top of you, slowly grinding down on you through the fabric of his boxers. Both of you let out a slight moan and you reached for the fabric, tugging it down and letting his erection spring free, sliding them down his legs.
“Condom,” he reminded and you sighed, chewing on your lower lip as he reached towards the drawer of the nightstand and pulled one out, your eyes fixed on his movements and the pool of wetness between your legs growing as he ripped the foil open with his teeth and rolled it on over his length, repositioning himself above you and kissing you softly. “So. Fucking. Beautiful.”
“Please,” you murmured and he nodded, lining up with your entrance and slowly sinking in, making you inhale sharply, wrapping your arms around him as he went deeper inch by inch, finally filling you up to the hilt and letting out a soft moan.
Both of you began to rock back and forth, small slow thrusts making you close your eyes and tilt back your head, giving Josh access to your neck, his lips carefully placing kisses on your skin and down to your breasts, each movement so sweet and graceful. He held you in his arms as if you were fragile glass, a porcelain doll meant to be treated with upmost care, a precious jewel uncovered from the depths of the ocean. It made you feel warm and special and safe and so happy, the way his skin brushed against yours making your body relax against his, both of your movements combining into pure bliss. “Baby, I’m close,” he whispered.
“Me too,” you bit down on your lower lip and nodded, both of you starting to shake and quiver in each other’s arms, each thrust of your hips gaining momentum until you both reached your climax, moaning loudly and riding out the waves of orgasm, your bodies pressed so close together until finally it settled. You were wrapped in each other’s arms for a moment before he pulled out, untangling your sweaty exhausted limbs from each other and letting Josh slide off and tie the condom, tossing it into the trash as you reached for the blankets that had fallen off the bed, covering yourself in them. Josh smirked and wrapped you in his arms, sighing.
He stared at you for a moment before closing his eyes tight. “God I’m going to miss you,” he sighed. You kissed again, pressing your lips to his for a moment before pulling away. “I wish I didn’t have to go.”
“Don’t say that,” you frowned. “I want you to have fun. I want you to play your heart out on stage every single night. I want you to smile. And if not for you, then for me. Promise?”
“Promise,” he agreed, kissing the top of your head. He sighed. “I’m going to miss you so much.”
“I am too,” you mumbled. “I don’t know what I’m going to do without you.”
