Aun así, envié el artículo con el titular propuesto porque era perfecto. La pieza retrataba el oscuro submundo del negocio del cobro de deudas —del cual seiscientos millones al año se sustraían en timos— y la regla en FairWarning era poner cara a cada fraude, fuera la del depredador o la de la presa, la de la víctima o la del victimario. Y esta vez se trataba del depredador. Arthur Hathaway, el Rey de los Timadores, era el número uno. A sus sesenta y dos años se había pasado la vida delinquiendo en Los Ángeles, llevando a cabo todo tipo de estafas imaginables, desde vender lingotes de oro falsos hasta crear webs que simulaban recaudar fondos para víctimas de catástrofes. Su última estafa consistía en convencer a la gente de que debía un dinero que en realidad no debía y conseguir que lo pagaran. A Letter of Forewarning

Dear Esteemed Gentleman,

In grace, I write you for the settling of your mind on the matter of my sister’s safe keeping. You are addled with misunderstanding and that may prove dangerous for you.  Aredhele neither requests or requires protection from her devouring interest.  She consumes them long before they feel the breath of demise at the back of their necks. They crumble under the demand of her ministrations like limestone over time.  Flee this course after her attention and return to your sensible-mistress, lest you anguish for her bidding in a desert, parched for regret.

Additionally, please forgive my brusque demeanor when last we spoke.  The tenderness of my typical countenance was caught sleeping for the visceral acuity of a recent and valiant martial struggle.  Furthermore, Aredhele’s quest after the madness of tin-god monster is of little interest to me.

Therefore sir, permit me to alleviate any uncertainty there may remain between us.  I will begin with a question and beg you to consider carefully before reply. After all, silence is an acceptable and often appropriate response.

Do you seek my attention sir?  At present, your buzzing is a mild nuisance I pain to overlook for the sake of my sister’s pleasure and your present-seeming comfort.  Your business with Aredhele is much the same;  a distant, prattling of inane observations, nevertheless avoidable.  And avoid you sir I shall, for your tongue is a nest of hungry vipers, striking at the half-thought proclamations of your self-certified truth.

Your constant, erroneous, meddling-observations vex my patience.  For all your judgement is quarrel in the making, cast like dice after those notions you fear the most.  You are predictable sir, though fear me not, for I will keep your secrets.  I have thus far and will continue to exercise prudence in my way with you.  

Nevertheless, continue to make your business that of my business and I will begin to take a much keener interest in the reasons for your own Mister Exsar.  I bid you farewell, may your days be many and your burdens light but far from me.
