I get from casuals or not Barça supporters that the logical option, upon getting asked to chose the "worst humiliation" in Barça's UCL's recent history, would be to go for the infamous 8-2 since, as you pointed out, it's a pretty catastrophic score that cannot be surpassed by a seemingly more dull 4-0. But from a Barça's hincha, you have to place Anfield, and Bayern, in the larger context.

Essentially, after 2015, it was a free fall, that started to take real shape and become noticeable in our game with Roma (4-1 ; 0-3 won by Roma due to the exterior goal rule that has since been erased) in 2018, then Anfield in 2019 (3-0 ; 0-4) and finally Bayern's 8-2 in 2020. Roma was the first severe hit, but Anfield was the uppercut. You gotta place it into our 2018-2019 season: Barcelona, after the 2017-2018 season, departures, knocking out of the UCL, wasn't expected to do very great, but they did. Because of a mix of things but most of all, essentially, at the core of it all, there was one guy that was at the form of his life, one guy that carried his club like Sisyphus and his boulder, one guy that aligned absolutely mental statistics while passing the eye test and being visibly better than essentially everyone on the pitch, whether his teammates or their opponents. Guess who. 😐 I'm not gonna go over his performance because truly, he outplayed and outshined every single player that season. FCB was on its way to win La Liga, the Supercopa and well on the UCL until Liverpool happened.

The first leg was good. That free kick? I jumped out of my skin alright. Me and the friends I was watching with did a Tom Cruise on my fucking couch, we were screaming, laughing, we couldn't believe it. You know those moments of euphoria in football, when it all happens at once, action after action, you can't fathom it, you're caught in your own pride, joy, relentless hope? Resumes LM10's UCL's run pretty well: stellar. Putting everyone on their feet. Making us hope to touch that trophy again. Making us so fucking proud of being a blaugrana and having him as ours. A promise of something great lying ahead, a treble, after Roma, after Neymar's departure and lack of proper replacement. I got no words for how bad second leg was. A crumble on the pitch, off of it, a mentality struggle that cripples this team to this day. Liverpool was so bad because the team just had to not take four goals. Guess they took lessons from PSG tho. :)

Can't really tell you how I and multiple felt about that; it was just a general, horrific crumble, and after the game, a kind of numbness that settled in. I remember one of my friend just shrugging at the end of Bayern; almost laughing. We were completely snapped out of it, no involvement whatsoever, and that's why, to me, Anfield was worse. Because at Anfield, we genuinely thought we could do it. It was a fairy tale. At Bayern, we didn't. 8-2 could have been 3-0 or 5-1 or 10-2, wouldn't have changed much. I'm not claiming it's all Barça's supporters feelings towards this, just explaining mine. I still can't watch Anfield's vids because it makes me genuinely mad, for everything it could have represented, for everything we could have won, because a team hadn't been able to back up one player when he had a faltering of form over one game. A bittersweet reminder that you could be the best player in the world and go through arguably the best season of your career, if you don't have anyone behind you, you won't get anywhere — football is a team sport and nothing else. A team wins. A team loses. End of discussion. :)

Capturing the ambience of Diddy Kong Racing

Even as an earlier title for the N64, DKR showcases its developer’s penchant for delivering rich experiences on the system.

The game’s ambient tracks, one such example, were designed to use the N64’s sequenced audio framework. This approach allowed for lengthy soundtracks while saving on precious cartridge space.

Rendering to WAV

It’s pretty easy to find a USF rip of Diddy Kong Racing which includes the game’s ambience tracks. USF sequences are ideal as they allow us to create offline, high-quality WAV renderings. Unfortunately though, this USF rip is not perfect - for example the dinosaur-themed ambience track is far too short, and the central field one loops imperfectly.

Instead we’ll try ripping and rendering MIDI representations of the ambient tracks ourselves. First, let’s run N64 Sound Tool to extract a paired MIDI track and DLS soundfont.

For whatever reason DLS is now quite an obscure format; SF2 soundfonts are much more widely supported. Therefore we’ll convert our DLS to SF2 - a task supported by multiple soundfont editors, such as Viena or Awave Studio.

From there, after placing the MIDI/SF2 pairs in the same directory, Foobar2000  or XMPlay can render the sequences using their respective MIDI plugins.

Problems with our MIDIs

There are some glaring problems with the results. The echoing wind of mountaintop doesn’t play correctly, central field’s SFX are overly loud, only one channel of the dinosaur track renders, and so on.

Trying different rendering tools reproduces the same errors, suggesting issues with the MIDI/DLS pair we extracted. And sadly, it seems N64 Sound Tool is no longer maintained.

I also tried playing DKR’s MIDIs inside GoldenEye Setup Editor (inside the Game Configuration window), but heard similar problems with the results.

Solution: Sound Test

To get high-fidelity versions we can record DKR’s isolated ambience tracks in-game, within the hidden Sound Test menu. It’s accessible from Sound Options after entering the “JUKEBOX” cheat.

There are four background tracks to find and record: beach, mountaintop, central field, and finally a dinosaur-themed one. Amazingly for an N64 release, the latter is over 5 minutes long! You also record in-game by disabling DKR’s music from the main menu or via the practice ROM.

Updated Solution: Nintendo-Synthy-4

This C++ program creates highly accurate offline renders of sequenced N64 sounds: https://github.com/L-Spiro/Nintendo-Synthy-4. Rendered results are available for download from their YouTube channel. You can also render them yourself.

Experimenting with the Setup Editor

With our collection of satisfying sound recordings on hand, it’s time to capture high-quality DKR footage. On the native Windows side, there is a decompilation effort under way for DKR, plus some time-tested editor tools e.g. GoldenEye Setup Editor with its Visual Editor.

GoldenEye Setup Editor offers a per-level Camera Zoom field. But this can’t be used to put the camera into a place where our character isn’t visible as I had hoped. The game doesn’t seem to respect values above 3C, and low ones result in an absurdly zoomed FoV.

Widescreen and framerate

If we decide to record in-game, there are some essential mods to apply, in order to reach higher framerates and FoVs. For 60fps in v1.0: 80079A2B 0003. For v1.1: 80079E7B 0003. For widescreen we can also use a cheat, or more robustly, a binary patch developed against the DKR’s reverse-engineered source code. There are more refined versions of the above cheats here and here.

There are also attempts to improve the performance of the game so that it runs closer to 60fps on N64 hardware. To remove the game’s HUD, we can use texture-replacement features of our chosen emulator.

Experimenting with speedrunner tools

I explored the ScriptHawk project as a potential way to position the player-character and camera in desired locations, but I could only get it to perform the former. Maxing out levitation by holding L may be a good way to get footage, if we could hide the racer player-character. 

ScriptHawk has a camera_zoom variable in the Lua script, but it’s not referenced anywhere in the code - could we use this?

Experimenting with GLIntercept

I don’t know of a way to achieve noclip / freecam within an emulator. Using Gameshark-style cheats to maneuver the camera inside an emulator may work - but on the other hand, I’ve heard there are anti-tamper measures against this built into DKR.

I did attempt applying GLIntercept‘s free camera plugin to RetroArch, but it wasn’t compatible, even against legacy OpenGL backends.

Noclip web viewer

I was content to record scenes inside noclip.website instead. This is a museum of sorts for video game environments which just so happened to have recently added support for DKR. I noticed some shading flaws (i.e. Wizpig’s mountain lacks lighting) that I was able to edit away via Photoshop’s burn tools. Other flaws, like missing weather, aren’t easily addressed.

Positional sounds

DKR’s ambient soundscapes also include contextual sound effects. For example, the main hub has a few waterfalls and a bubbling stream. We can experiment with N64 Sound Tool‘s import/export to determine which assets are played at a specific location.

Nintendo DS version

From what I could tell, this release lacks the background sound sequences of the original. For capturing footage, however, it features a couple of very accessible free-camera options in the forms of A.) the Taj minigame and B.) the free cam built into the most popular DS emulator.

Yeah his on-field dislike is justified considering his poor tackling in particular🤣 I would’ve liked and expected to see a new 10 for the RWC, and thought that the Borthwick era might kickstart it, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be him there or playing 12 but dictating like he’s there🤣 although I really don’t rate Marcus Smith so can’t complain too much🤷‍♀️

There’s at least 8 players for me on the training squad that will probably feature at some point over the tournament but are past their best days. I get the whole ‘experience’ factor but for me that’s not a good enough reason to disregard obvious decline. Not to be negative but we aren’t winning this WC😅, maybe just touching the semi-finals. The best thing though is that nobody is expecting us to. I think it should be used as an opportunity to test the waters. Expose a young squad and find out their real weaknesses rather than squeeze the life out of the 30+ year olds. I’m not a fan of the short term solutions like throwing in an experienced player. I’d rather see Genge lifting the cup in 4 years knowing we’ve built something long-term.

NM3217: Assignment 3 commentary

I found this assignment to be the most challenging in terms of getting started. The first thought that came to mind was to do up an infographic related to climate change.. just because that was probably the social cause that gets the most attention. I looked through the sample works for information and saw that one of them happened to be a 'how to' infographic on how to care for one's dog. This inspired me to come up with an infographic related to my hobby.. playing chess.



I drew up some ideas I had, and considered the elements that I was going to be including in my infographic. Different chess openings, checkmating patterns, a legend of the pieces, chess trivia, and piece movement all came to mind.

I thought that it might be a little challenging to illustrate chess openings since it would require a full display of the board. Piece movement was also challenging to illustrate due to space constraints. I had initially thought of illustrating piece movement using various 5 x 5 spaces but found that it might be challenging to illustrate that pawns could move forward 1 space but are allowed to move up 2 spaces on their first move. Additionally, they can only eat pieces diagonally. These things would likely have to be explained using text and I didn’t want the infographic to be too wordy. Regarding other pieces like the rook and bishop, I was afraid that players might misinterpret it as meaning that they can only move 2 spaces adjacently or diagonally. So, I decided to stick with creating a ‘How to checkmate in chess’ infographic targeted towards individuals who were familiar with basic movement but not on how to win.

Thereafter, I worked on the layout, fonts, and found that I had an empty space to play with at the bottom right corner. I drew a knight there as a placeholder and moved on with designing the other elements.

For my color scheme, I went with cream, beige, orange, brown, dark brown, DARKER brown, white, grey, and black. I felt that there would be issues with visibility if I had used black tiles and black pieces so I chose grey instead for the pieces. For the tiles, I went with brown since it was a dark color that was distinct from grey.

After some thought, I decided to place a brown triangle at the bottom right corner of my infographic since I felt that having a dark element would give balance to my infographic since the title on top was dark, and the middle of my infographic is predominantly cream. I filled it up with some chess trivia and icons of chess pieces in white. This was my initial draft.

Some feedback I received from class was that I could try using brightly colored arrows with a white outline. I had tested this before and disliked how the arrow would still be blocking the view of the King, especially in 5. Anastasia’s mate where the arrow would have to overlap the King. So I stuck with using a black arrow at 50% opacity.

I also received feedback that my text might appear too wordy and that I should strive to keep it to 2 lines at max, so I cut down on the words. Also, someone commented that it was difficult to read the text in the bottom right triangle since the colors were too similar. I agreed with that and changed the color of the triangle to beige with predominantly black text to help with readability. This is the final result.

One key takeaway I had from tutorial was that the importance of having a visual hook. Looking at my peers’ work, one common mistake I saw was that everyone tended to have 4 or 5 equally sized visual elements, which made the infographic appear boring due to the lack of a key focus. The first change I did was thus to cut words from my title and increase its font size. In addition, I also took advantage of the shape of the triangle and displayed chess pieces that increased in size; variety is a spice of life~~ I also changed the color of the pieces in the corner to grey so that I could retain the idea of balance. Another lesson from this assignment would probably be that the adage 'less is more' holds true in the context of producing infographics.   

Regarding the use of Illustrator, I am really enjoying the toolset offered. The font I used for the title, Highjinkies, did not allow for the text to be filled (it only colors the shadow).

So I used a trick I learnt from Youtube (expand the appearance of the text), and using the live bucket tool to paint inside each individual letter.
