Wednesday, October 6: Fates Warning, “White Flag”
Theories of Flight did more than just build on Darkness in a Different Light and convince everyone that Fates Warning was a working band once again; the band’s twelfth record showcased a striking maturity in its composition and performance, perfectly balancing classic prog touchstones with a newfound aggression that out-heavied virtually everything from the past 25 years.  “White Flag” ably captured this balance, with simultaneously precise and pummeling percussion from Bobby Jarzombek, stirring vocals from Ray Alder and elegant fretwork from Jim Matheos and occasional lead guitarist Frank Aresti. And while Matheos was always the focal point, his production and Jens Bogren’s mix gave ample space for the entire band to shine- indeed, this was arguably the most fully actualized Fates Warning sounded as a group of players.  “White Flag” was progressive metal that refused to pander or rely on obvious moves, instead feeling completely organic and natural, and ultimately reasserted not only Fates Warning’s vitality, but their position as a preeminent prog metal act.

Basic Details. Band: Fates Warning. Genre: Progressive Metal. Album: Awaken The Guardian. Released: 1986 Track: Guardian.
Band Members: John Arch – Vocals. Frank Aresti  – Guitar. Mick Tucker – Guitar. Joe DiBiase –  Bass. Jim Archambault – Keyboard. Steve Zimmerman – Drums
Awaken the Guardian is the third studio album by progressive metal band Fates Warning, released in 1986 through Metal Blade Records. The album was the band's first to enter the U.S. Billboard 200, reaching No. 191 and remaining on that chart for four weeks. It is also the first Fates Warning album to feature guitarist Frank Aresti and the last with original singer John Arch, who was replaced by Ray Alder on their subsequent 1988 album No Exit. Robert Taylor at AllMusic gave Awaken the Guardian three stars out of five, calling it "a closet classic from the underground metal years of the '80s" and the song "Guardian" being noted as a highlight. As with Fates Warning's previous album The Spectre Within (1985), Taylor recommended it more for fans of heavy metal than progressive metal, remarking that "the song structures are too rudimentary to be called progressive."
Jeff Wagner at Decibel magazine ranked the album at number 134 in the Decibel Hall of Fame, saying it was "one of the celebrated masterworks of the genre."Adrien Begrand at PopMatters, reviewing the 2005 reissue, called it the best of Fates Warning's catalog, adding that "such a stirring combination of traditional metal and progressive sounds would never be duplicated by the band", and concluding that "Awaken the Guardian still resonates with life today" and it "solidifies Fates Warning's place in metal history
Lyrics: These walls are stained engraved with pain
You will find them under shadows casting shame Some it's all they've ever known, Angels of the fortunate sons come and go... You may not Entities pass in the night Guardians and the Reaper fight the will to live shall win Mares of hope ride through their dreams blinding light awakens sleeping dawn it seems It was all a dream, an endless dream I will wish upon a star I believe in you And if my will has strayed afar I rememebered you Will you remember me I the one you sentenced Pennance unabsolved Answer me save my will have you forgotten me Pace the hallway blindman for a million miles of stars His mind has seen. think you may he lives in darkness We're the dark he's seen the light of dream Karen, she's been asleep forever I know she hears me She has so much to say, The machine shoots sparks through Her eggshell mind A tear streams from her face Into my hand, into my heart I'm a fire without a flame A helpless child without a name With broken wings catch me I'm falling I'm a question with no answer Who are you that takes my life away from me Unveil the bondaries of the black I had a dream I was you strong as the fire In your veins then when I called out your Name I would remain to witness the pain I am beyond silent black I will be back As your guardian Angels in white you have sacrificed You witness and bury the pain You walk hand and hand with the fear stricken child Strengthen the weak and the lame Have you seen beyond the unborn The pillars of pennance and lore Perpetual journey into the realm the sovereign servitor

4 YEARS AGO TODAY FATES WARNING RELEASED THEIR 12TH STUDIO ALBUM 'THEORIES OF FLIGHT'. Did you know? Theories of Flight marked the first time since 2004's FWX that Fates Warning had recorded as a four-piece. Although guitarist Frank Aresti was still a member of Fates Warning at the time of the album's writing and recording sessions, he does not appear in band photos inside the album booklet and is credited only as a guest, for providing guitar solos on two tracks ("From the Rooftops" and "White Flag") https://www.jrocksmetalzone.com/on-this-day https://www.instagram.com/p/CCHe8Jlg6UE/?igshid=s007fqclce7f

FW has been a longtime favorite. I still have No Exit on tape and the original CD. Like many, I had my doubts when vocalist John Arch was replaced by Ray Alder, but this album proved excellent in so many ways—especially the guitar work between Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti. Released in March 1988—it remains one of their heaviest albums to date. Along with the first three albums (and others), it’ll forever be in my regular rotation. Concert Review: Queensrÿche and Fates Warning at House of Blues Houston, March 21, 2019
with Carox Rox
Queensrÿche hit the road on March 1st for the first leg of The Verdict world tour in the US. Queensrÿche bands members are: Todd LaTorre - Lead Vocals; Michael Wilton - Guitar; Eddie Jackson - Bass; Scott Rockenfield - Drums; Parker Lundgren – Guitar.
Queensrÿche has already released two singles off their upcoming album The Verdict. The Verdict was produced, mixed, and mastered by Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Iced Earth, Hatebreed) at Uberbeatz in Lynwood, WA, Planet-Z in Wilbraham, MA and Watershed Studio in Seattle, WA.
Check out the lyric video for "Dark Reverie" here: https://youtu.be/J86rOTinVRs
And the official video for "Man The Machine" here: https://youtu.be/lcDYVKfjg7Q
Here is the latest video release for Light-years, just released.
This was a great show. I was lucky enough to see Todd LaTorre singing with Queensrÿche way back when in San Antonio, so I can tell you that both his stage performance and voice now own Queensrÿche without a doubt. The new songs went down well and the old songs, like Take Hold of the Flame came with a sturdy accompaniment by the many fans old and new who were milling about all over the venue in band shirt merch.
The setlist at the House of Blues, Houston was : Launder the Conscience, Blood of the Levant   I Am I,  NM 156, Man the Machine, Condition Hüman, Queen of the Reich,  Silent Lucidity, Open Road, Propaganda Fashion   Light-years   Screaming in Digital,   Take Hold of the Flame   Eyes of a Stranger (with Anarchy-X outro)  - Encore:  Jet City Woman,  Empire.
Queensrÿche was supported by Fates Warning. Fates Warning consists of Jim Matheos, (guitar) Ray Alder, (vocals) Joey Vera, (bass) Bobby Jarzombek,(drummer) Frank Aresti (guitar). Fates Warning joined the US portion of the tour with Queensrÿche for March and final two dates in the beginning of April. They describe themselves as a “vibrant and well-respected cornerstone for the prog camp within the heavy metal strata”.
Their set list included: Life in Still Water, Acquiescence, Eleventh Hour, Point of View, A Pleasant Shade of Gray .
Fates Warning began in a very understated, cool performance of their first two or three songs. I put it down to tour lag perhaps, because having seen them several times I was waiting for the magic to happen. Magic did, and the audience responded magically. Ray Alder is a fantastic vocalist and this band never fails to deliver a performance that draws you in, suck you up and almost becomes an experience of its own that you don’t want to end.  This band were just signed up with Metal Blades records and they well deserve it.

FA Cup first round: Haringey Borough eye AFC Wimbledon giant-killing
FA Cup first round: Haringey Borough v AFC Wimbledon Venue: Coles Park, Tottenham Date: Friday 9 November Kick-off: 19:55 GMT Coverage: Live on BBC Two, the BBC Sport website and app, live text commentary on the BBC Sport website
They are one of only a few clubs in the top seven tiers of English football to hand out free season tickets, they have a midfielder who has played against Luka Modric, and five years ago they attracted a crowd of just 17 (seventeen) to a league match.
On Friday, Haringey Borough will host a club record crowd of around 2,500 as the non-league team look to spring an FA Cup first-round shock by knocking out AFC Wimbledon, who play four leagues above them, in a match to be shown live on BBC Two.
Located on White Hart Lane, just over a mile from where Tottenham’s booming 62,000-seater stadium is taking shape, Borough’s Coles Park ground has a main stand with 270 seats.
The only team surviving from August’s preliminary round, Haringey have already created club history by reaching this stage for the first time.

Their run includes a 97th-minute winner at Brentwood Town in the first qualifying round and coming from behind in three of their five games. In doing so, the Isthmian League Premier Division club have earned £57,890 in prize money – a huge amount for a part-time club who cannot afford to pay a wage to all their players.
“We’ve got a few contracted players – the rest are on expenses which covers things like petrol money and buying a pair of boots,” said Tom Loizou, in his 11th season as Haringey manager.
“Even the contracted players are on a bare minimum when it comes to wages.”

‘One of the fastest growing fanbases in the country’
On 26 February 2013, Haringey entertained Biggleswade United in the ninth-tier Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. There were more players on the pitch than people who paid to watch.
Having spent around £1m on ground improvements, including a new 3G pitch, Borough took the bold decision to give away free season tickets in the summer of 2016 – despite requiring £140,000 a year to keep going.
“We’d spent all this money on a new stadium and had nobody to watch us,” Aki Achillea, a criminal defence solicitor and chairman of Haringey for the past 14 years, said. “I banked on the fact anyone with a free season ticket might buy food and drink.”

The giveaway has been such a success that it remains in place today. Borough’s average league attendance has jumped from 58 in 2015-16 to 262 this season, and manager Tom Loizou said: “We have one of the fastest growing fanbases in the country.”
With little in the way of gate receipts, however, Haringey have had to be resourceful in terms of raising income.
The club receive a rent for hosting a car boot sale three times a week, while finances are also boosted by hiring out their £500,000 synthetic pitch during the week.
“A few years ago we couldn’t even get a sponsor, people just laughed at us,” 58-year-old Loizou, a former Leyton Orient caretaker manager, added.
“Now we’ve got a van hire company who are in White Hart Lane. Instead of cash, they have given us a mini bus to get the team to away games. We can’t afford a coach to every away match.”
The man who faced Modric
Four years ago Georgios Aresti was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Modric, Mario Mandzukic and Dejan Lovren.
The central midfielder, born in Limassol, made his one and only start for Cyprus in a 2-0 friendly defeat in Croatia in September 2014.
Four months earlier he had come up against then-Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa when he appeared as a substitute against Japan in front of 58,000 in Saitama.
Aged 24, Aresti is a veteran of almost 100 top-flight Cypriot games – including 43 at Ethnikos Achnas where he was on a £40,000-a-year contract – and joined Haringey towards the end of last season before re-signing in July after a trial at Barnet ended without an offer.
<!–
Desperate to earn a living playing professionally in England, the former AEK Athens player hopes his performances for Haringey, where he picks up around £100 a game, will lead to greater things.
In September, 18-year-old Haringey defender Themis Kefalas signed a one-year deal with Championship club Queens Park Rangers,[3] and Aresti hopes to follow a similar path.
“I want to progress my career and I think I can do it,” said Aresti, who scored in the 3-2 win at Brentwood Town in the first qualifying round. “Haringey is a small club in a small league but there are lots of scouts that come to our games.”
Despite only being at Haringey for a short time, Aresti has already established himself as a cult figure with fans.
“He makes goals and sees things other players at this level can’t see,” added Achillea. “Our fans love him and sing ‘George Aresti is a gift from the Gods’ at games.”
Achillea, too, is popular with Borough fans. One banner reads “The People’s Republic of Haringey Borough. Vote Aki Achillea Prime Minister!”
<!–
Injured trying to empty a bin
Haringey’s team also includes Michael O’Donoghue, a 22-year-old defender who has played in League One for Colchester United, midfielder Rakim Richards, who works for the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation[4] and Michael Ademiluyi, a former Southend United youth forward who has recently worked in security at The Oval cricket ground.
Meanwhile, Portuguese midfielder Jorge Sambu is hoping to make an impression against Wimbledon after recovering from a work injury.
The 27-year-old refuse collector for Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council missed the start of the season after damaging his knee while trying to empty a bin.
How Haringey got the FA Cup first round Preliminary round: H v Stanway Rovers 1-0 – Chinedu McKenzie First qualifying round: A v Brentwood Town 3-2 – Georgios Aresti, Chinedu McKenzie, Karl Akinwande Second qualifying round: H v Erith Town 2-0 – Joel Nouble (pen), Chinedu McKenzie Third qualifying round: H v AFC Sudbury 2-1 – Chinedu McKenzie (2) Fourth qualifying round: H v Poole Town 2-1 – Jorge Sambu, Joel Nouble
“My knee just gave way and I only started playing again last month,” said Lisbon-born Sambu, who is in his fifth season at Haringey.
“I came to London to live with my mum at the age of 14. At first I used to beg her to go back to Portugal but she said it’s a better life for us here. I love London now.
“I’ve had two promotions with Haringey and I’ve had an offer to sign for a team in a better division this year.
“I chose to stay at Haringey because I don’t think I will find another team like this. We’re a very close-knit group and we look after one another.”
‘We’re the only team in White Hart Lane’
Above the bar in Haringey’s six-year-old clubhouse is a sign that reads ‘White Hart Lane N17’.
It was paid for by Loizou, who says: “There’s only one senior club on White Hart Lane – and it’s not Spurs. Their official address is High Road, Tottenham.”
<!–
Achillea has been a Tottenham season ticket holder for 30 years and travelled to the Netherlands in October to watch them against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
One of his ambitions is to get Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino down to watch Haringey. Another is to see Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, who currently play in Cheshunt, groundshare at Coles Park.
“Spurs Ladies playing on White Hart Lane would be fantastic,” he said.
<!–
Borough have a women’s team of their own. Long-serving Haringey secretary John Bacon often acts as an assistant referee at their home matches in the Eastern Region Women’s Premier Division[5] – at the age of 80.
Haringey’s Brit Award winners
Former Haringey players include Ricky Otto,[6] later a Birmingham City winger, and Leon Rolle – also known as DJ Locksmith.
Rolle, who was Borough captain, Kesi Dryden and Piers Aggett were all registered with Haringey before helping launch Rudimental, the drum and bass band who won British single of the year at the 2014 Brits.[7]
“When I first took over they were in the process of forming a band and playing football for us,” added Loizou.
“They weren’t famous at the time and I didn’t take a lot of notice of them. It’s not my kind of music. If it had been Frank Sinatra playing centre-half it would have been very different!”
<!–
Meanwhile, British singer-songwriter Emeli Sande[8] turned up in 2015 to watch Haringey win promotion from the Essex Senior League and even wrote a message on Facebook[9] after her visit to Coles Park.
Eight years ago, Ben Corbyn, son of Labour leader Jeremy, managed Haringey Borough’s under-18 team.

Founding FATES WARNING Members JOHN ARCH And JIM MATHEOS Re-Sign With METAL BLADE RECORDS
RARE BLACK METAL COLLECTIBLES
ARCH/MATHEOS began as a reunion between founding FATES WARNING members John Arch (vocals) and Jim Matheos (guitar), who hadn't collaborated since Arch's solo EP, "A Twist Of Fate" (2003) — and hadn't fully collaborated for a whole album since FATES WARNING's "Awaken The Guardian" (1986). In 2010, the duo began working on a record together and brought along three FATES WARNING members to the fold. The five members would in turn release their debut album, "Sympathetic Resonance", in 2011, under the name ARCH/MATHEOS. Since then, Arch and Matheos have kept busy with their other projects — but now the time has come for them to join forces once again, for a new ARCH/MATHEOS release, due out 2019 via Metal Blade Records. Arch comments: "The desire and commitment from both of us is first and foremost, but the impetus to move forward with another ARCH/MATHEOS project fell in good part on how well 'Sympathetic Resonance' was received, and how the fans have continued to show their support through a variety of mediums, stating they would like a follow-up effort. The timing for Jim and I seems to be right and things are coming along nicely. We look forward to sharing the results with you soon!" Matheos adds: "It's great to be working with my old friend John Arch again. We push each other creatively in ways that brings out the best in both of us, I think. We've come up with what I hope is a worthy successor to 'Sympathetic Resonance', and a great lineup of musicians to help us bring it to fruition." Already featuring special guests Thomas Lang, Bobby Jarzombek, Baard Kolstad, Mark Zonder, Matt Lynch, Steve DiGiorgio, Joey Vera, Sean Malone, Joe DiBiase and Frank Aresti — with more to come! — this upcoming ARCH/MATHEOS album is currently being tracked, with Jens Bogren (FATES WARNING, OPETH, DEVIN TOWNSEND) handling mixing duties in November.

Fates Warning Awaken the Guardian Live Album Coming April 28
Legendary progressive metal act Fates Warning celebrated the 30th anniversary of their third album, Awaken the Guardian, in 2016. The album was to become their final release to feature vocalist John Arch. That era’s lineup was rounded out by bassist Joe DiBiase, drummer Steve Zimmerman, along with current guitarist Frank Aresti and, of course, Jim Matheos. Awaken the Guardianalso holds the honor…
