Gedurende de restauratie van de KoepelKathedraal in Haarlem bleek dat diverse voor deze kerk ontworpen kunstwerken nooit zijn gerealiseerd. Tijdens de restauratie (2010-2018) lukte het om er alsnog enkele toe te voegen en recent zijn glas-in-lood ramen van Jan Toorop en glasmozaïeken van Gijs Frieling dankzij schenkingen gerealiseerd. Wat?   Wandschildering door Gijs Frieling en assistenten

De tentoonstelling Schurend Paradijs vindt plaats in Kunsthal KADE in Amersfoort. Maar voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van KADE is er een tweede tentoonstellingslocatie en wel de Elleboogkerk aan de Langegracht. Gijs Frieling ontwierp een wandschildering waarin hij de menselijke natuur in een toenemend technologische samenleving onderzoekt. De kunstenaar liet zich bijstaan door een groep studenten van het bijvak Antroposofie aan de Leidse Hogeschool. De studenten maakten elk een portret ten voeten uit van hun ideale zelf. Ook op andere manieren hadden de studenten inbreng in het kunstwerk dat de muren van de Elleboogkerk van top tot bodem vult.

Het verhaal ontwikkelt zich van het ontstaan van de wereld en de schepping van de natuur naar het hemelse Jeruzalem in het koor van de kerk. Onderin zien we donkere ruimtes waarin mensen achter computers werken. Citaten van evangelisten, Jezus, kunstenaars, literaire schrijvers en anderen omringen deze scènes. Boven de ramen zijn namen aangebracht van dierbare overledenen van de kunstenaar en zijn assistenten.

Kunstenaarsduo Sander Breure en Witte van Hulzen maakte  een installatie in het hart van de kerk met figuren die door middel van geluid met elkaar in verbinding staan. Geluidsboxen, opgetuigd met kledingstukken produceren allerlei natuurgeluiden.

Het is jammer dat ik niet in Amersfoort woon, want dan kwam ik zeker nog minstens twee keer terug om het werk te bekijken, want: hoe meer je kijkt, hoe meer je ziet! Voor ik de kerk verliet, had ik een gesprek met de vrijwilligster achter de  entreebalie in de kerk. Zij vertelde dat zij het jammer vond dat  het kunstwerk na afloop van de tentoonstelling zou worden weggewit. Ik ben het van harte met haar eens! De Elleboogkerk kan er frisser, maar nooit mooier uitkomen dan met dit fantastische werk van Gijs Frieling en zijn assisterende studenten.
