Riots in the Square | Ciara & Godfrey

"My lady, we are to escort you back to your chambers immediately. You cannot be here."

"Why? Lord Calainon is expected here any moment ... " Ciara found that she now often met such requests with perhaps a tad more hostility than it warranted. She supposed that that was a direct result from her guilty conscious, which always suspected that this was the moment that her cousin had discovered that she had gotten herself involved in the resistance and, even though she had been his own secret informant, it would be apparent that not everything had been disclosed to him.

"-- It is for your own safety."

"What is happening?" She asked, again.

"Those are our orders."

After a silent march to her rooms and more unsuccessful attempt to gather any information, Ciara slipped from her rooms the moment she no longer heard them in the hall. From a distance, she trailed the guards and found that they and a great many others were rushing towards the walls and the main gate of the castle.

She went to the nearest window, and although she wasn't truly able to see anything from it, when she opened it she could hear the sounds of a large, rioting crowd, which must have been making it way towards the castle. In mere moments, the shouting turned to screams, followed by the unmistakable cries of grief, and then before Ciara could make it down to the courtyard, all had gone silent.

"My lady, you shouldn't be here."

Ciara turned -- this time it was Tristan who spoke to her. She shook her head defiantly when he tried to usher her away, "No, Tristan, I -- "

"-- Come, my brother will not be pleased if he finds I've allowed you to stay."

"He was on his way here! He may, even now, be on the other side of the wall." On the wrong side of the wall, she feared -- if anyone were to recognize him as a brother of the Queen. (Whatever was happening outside, she doubted that he would not be seen as the enemy). Given that the crowds had died down significantly, Ciara worried that if something had happened to him, it might be too late.

She could tell that Tristan suddenly shared in her fears and he moved with some urgency back towards the gates where he shouted orders to the guards.

Minutes later, the gates were opened and Godfrey passed through and Ciara felt herself breathe easy again as relief washed over her. She wasted no time in greeting him as soon as he dismounted from his horse.

"Are you alright? Are you hurt?" Ciara searched his face for any signs of injury, but all she found there was distress.

She took his hand and lead him to a more secluded part of the courtyard, as Percy led away his horse. It was not the first time that Ciara had noted the convenience of their relationship: she might have been his informant, but she was his fiancé, too, and no one batted an eye to see them tucked away whispering together. Even here, in the open, they may speak freely.

"Did you see what has happened? No one will tell me anything."

ciara's life has gotten wildly out of control!!!

during ciara's journey to the capitol city in astaira, her caravan was overtaken by members of the astairian resistance, who had hoped to gain a hostage of royal blood

at the time, ciara pretended to be one of her own handmaidens and while they took everything they had of value, they let them all go unharmed as they "had no quarrel with servants"

ciara made it back to her family safely and while a small army had been dispatched to find the criminals, still no traces of them were found

that is, until ciara met percy reaves and realized why it was that she found him so familiar

she might have turned him in, if she hadn't managed to befriend him first and, having done so, she was convinced that he had simply fallen into the wrong crowd

one day she confided in him that she remembered him from when she was kidnapped, but that she did not mean to turn him in and told him that she believed the resistance were in the right & also that her mom was born here and she and her bro are both half astairian, themselves

percy believed her reasoning and began to trust her and when she ventured to offer that she might be able to pass them all information, ciara first began to infiltrate the resistance

it was some time before percy and the rest trusted her enough to allow her to meet some of the other members, but eventually that day came

while she did not know where their hideout was/their true numbers, she knew that she now had some valuable information, but she didn't know quite enough yet to go roderick w/ this

but she knew she needed help and she also needed someone to pass what information she had gained onto -- and so she decided to go to godfrey

she was not surprised to find that he was, at first, completely against the idea of placing her in this situation, but his ambition ended up outweighing his other concerns (he knew that if he had such a hand in overturning the resistance that has evaded, thus far, the emporer's men, the rewards would be great

his compromise has been that he must know everything she learns and he wishes to know each time she meets them/where she goes/what time, etc. etc.

while ciara started this entire operation with the desire to aid her father and cousin in settling the unrest astaira has faced since the conquest, she's beginning to care for the resistance members she's met -- as well as having formed friendships with the two imprisoned staffords -- resulting in her some days she's not sure roderick is in the right

she knows she is still being kept an arm's length from the resistance given her ties to the varmonts (she has yet to be taken to their hideaway and has been made to believe that the network is far more advance than it actually is and that this group here is only a small fraction of their numbers), but she also is happy for it, for she knows all there is to know, she will have to make up her mind on what side she is on, once and for all ...

cecily knows that ciara was mistaken by the resistance to be her own lady-in-waiting (aka cecily herself) and when it became clear that the resistance was likely to ransom her (at best) and kill her (at worst), ciara did nothing to dissuade them of this notion and was able to escape

okay, so first thing -- idk how long they have been engaged, but I do think that ciara was relatively happy with the match? godfrey is handsome and charming and fun and young (honestly a lot of traits she didn't think that her future husband would necessarily have???) I'm not sure that she loves him, but she definitely thinks she could love him? I do imagine that they have some good times together, since they are both kind charming/flirtatious/witty and they probably play off of each other nicely? (sidenote though, if he still flirts w/ other girls, it would def make ciara jealous although she'd try to hide that i think it might be obvious haha)

the second thing -- is the whole spy thing ha! I do think that she went to godfrey w/ it, because she trusts him (or at least hopes she can trust him). in hindsight, I think she feels she was probably kinda reckless in going to him w/ something so serious and important if they only know each other on a superficial level (however if they were friends before the engagement, that might change things?)

either way, I think that one of the main reasons she went to him and not her bro/her dad (and certainly NOT Roderick), was because she hoped that he would trust her enough to handle this (even if it was his ambition that ultimately tipped the scales in her favor haha) Because I think that her dad & bro would be like absoulutley not!! it's too dangerous!! And Roderick & co wouldn't trust her to do something so important b/c she's a woman -- but I think she would hope that perhaps Godfrey would. Plus them actually working together as a team on this, is a good pre-marriage exercise in trust/respect/working together ;D (not that this really factored, but I do think she hoped that he would see her more of an equal than he might have otherwise done)

The ironic thing is, if this IS a test, she's honestly the one that is failing hahaha!

(I also have a headcannon that the earldom that godfrey now has here in asteria once belonged to ciara's grandparents (now deceased)/is where her mom grew up??)

currently engaged to the king's cousin, ciara, who is the wealthiest woman in the land -- the king's own daughters aside

eager for her to be his wife, but less enthused that she is being allowed to help spy on the rebels

he understands her circumstances gave her an ideal situation for such a job, but he would never trust a woman with such an important task, nor would he put her in such a dangerous position
