I'm proud of all 12 of the Irish bands due to fly to Texas for SXSW, who have decided to boycott the festival in solidarity with Palestine. In protest at SXSW's sponsorship by the US army and defense contractors who are arming the genocide in Gaza, they are not participating.

Kudos to Gurriers, Kneecap, Cardinals, Enola Gay, NewDad, Chalk, Sprints, Soda Bonde, Gavin James, Reeva, Mick Flannery and Robert Grace for taking this stand.

“Sponsorship of the festival from defence contractors and those sending arms to destroy innocent lives is an act we find disgusting and reprehensible. We as Irish people have a lot of solidarity with the people of Palestine as we share a history of occupation and oppression by colonialist countries.”

Das Obstwiesenfestival 2023 steht in den Startlöchern

Vom 17. bis zum 19. August 2023 wird in Dornstadt bei Ulm das Obstwiesenfestival 2023 stattfinden. Das Obstwiesenfestival startet bereits am Donnerstag Abend mit dem Film Sonne und Beton. Am Freitag startet dann das musikalische Programm des Festivals und am Samstag geht es dann damit weiter. Vorne Weg stehen die drei großen Headliner Beatsteaks, Temples und Die Sterne. Aber auch die kleineren Acts sind in diesem Jahr ganz groß. Also wir wollen eigentlich alle sehen. Schaut man nämlich genau hin, entdeckt man eine Reihe großartiger Acts wie Oskar Haag, Juse Ju, Ilgen-Nur natürlich Van Holzen die ein Heimspiel haben werden oder auch Beverly Kills und das sind nur einige davon. Zusätzlich findet am Samstag Nachmittag für die kleinen Festivalbesucher in diesem Jahr etwas besonderes statt. Mit Simon Sagt wird eine extra Band für die Kinder auf der Zeltbühne auftreten. Und wie immer findet am Freitag und Samstag morgen um 11 Uhr das Obstwiesenfestival Yoga statt. Als Kontrast kann man aber auch am Samstagmorgen zum traditionellen Frühschoppen in den Obstlergarten gehen. Der genaue Timetable wird wie immer kurz vor dem Obstwiesenfestival 2023 veröffentlicht. So...the nostalgia trip continues.

Current obsession is KKM. *Sigh*. That stands for Kyou Kara Maou. Or ‘Demon King from Today’ is the English name for it I believe.

It’s an extremely weird series and the official translations were not as good as the fan translations in my opinion, so we might have different understanding of the whole thing if you watch it now.

ANYWAY! The point is, I have this indescribable urge to discuss one of my favourite pairings of all time:

Conrad x Yozak!

(He’s officially called Josak, which makes more sense, but like, I like the Y damn it!)

In this essay I will talk about the confusing and complicated relationship between these two characters in which no one can tell whether they’re actually friends or soldiers that were part of the same army at one point in their lives.

Day 2: Gur Cake

Also known as Chester Cake in every part of Ireland that is not Dublin

Its a type of bread pudding with pastry on the top and the bottom and a slice could have been bought for a ha'penny (half a penny) throughout most of the nineteenth century in Dublin. It got its name from gurriers, little boys who skipped school and were generally, in my father's words, little thugs. The gur cake was the only cake gurriers could afford in the bakery.

Makes 24.

Ingredients:

8 slices stale bread with the crusts cut off

3 tbsp flour

1⁄2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp mixed spice

100g (1/2 cup) brown sugar

2 tbsp butter

175g currants or mixed dried fruit

1 large egg, beaten

4 tbsp milk

350g shortcrust pastry

icing sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

Soak the bread in a little water for an hour, then squeeze the moisture out. Combine the flour, baking powder, mixed spice, sugar, butter, fruit, beaten egg and milk. Mix well.

Line the bottom of a 22 cm (9 in) square tin with half of the pastry and spread the mixture over, then cover with the remaining pastry. Make a few diagonal gashes across the top and bake at 190°C/375°F/gas mark 5 for about an hour.

Sprinkle the top with sugar and allow to cool in the tin, then cut into 24 small squares.
