So basically due to my knee issues I am at forced rest for another 30+ days and the maximum I can do is walk around the house with crutches. I feel like Jimmy Stewart in Hitchcok's Rear Window but I have no well dressed lover coming to entertain me nor a mystery to solve, it's all just boring
In this 1944 film ,8 people are stuck in a lifeboat ,one being a nazi Willy (Walter Sleazak )
GOd I have been sitting on this review for days cause I dont know what to say .YOud think Id have a bunch to say considering the film is an interesting experiment ,with the gimick being the whole film is in this lifeboat ,and seeing the character survive the elements and each other .....But while the film is interesting,I wish the movie did more with the premise
Things I liked
WAlter Sleazak has a very warm look to him so casting him as a villainous nazi is a good way to mess with expectations
Talluah Bankhead delivers a great performance ,she is the highlight of the film
I liked the character of Joe played by Canada Lee,in fact I was disappointed he didnt have more to do but he made his scenes count
Hume Cronyn is really good, wish he was the lead
The whole subplot with the traumatised mother (Played by Mrs Darling from Disney s Peter PAn ,Heather Angel ) clutching the dead baby felt very Grapes of Wrath to me (COnsidering John Steinbeck wrote the story, makes sense ) ,just very heartbreaking and unexpected in a Hitchcock film
The amputation scene was effective had metense and feeling my leg
The bad:
The lead character is just a macho jackass, and I dont buy his romance with Talluah for a second
I just dont like Henry Hull ,Ive seen him in a bunch of movies, dont like him
The ending with the second nazi felt forced
OVerall I was interested by this movie ,but the more I think about it,its not a fave .Its good though
For kid crafts at Dinosaur Weekend at my Trolley Museum, I designed some little standee figures of historical paleontologists from New England. I made it so that they could fit in a little papecraft trolley as passengers.
Here are some brief details about each figure:
Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864) A geologist and president of Amherst College in Massachusetts. Hitchcock was the first person to study the different types of fossil footprints of the Connecticut Valley. Since dinosaurs had not yet been discovered and named, he thought the tracks had been made by giant ancient birds.
Orra White Hitchcock (1796-1863) Wife of Edward Hitchcok. She created many scientific watercolor paintings of flora, geology and other natural subjects of the Connecticut Valley. She also painted numerous illustrations for her husband’s geology lectures and public talks.
Joseph Barratt (1796-1882) A doctor and naturalist from Middletown, Connecticut. He studied many subjects including botany, geology, and Native American languages. He was also interested in the fossil footprints of the Connecticut Valley and gave several good quality specimens to Edward Hitchcock, with whom he was friends.
Mignon Talbot (1869-1950) A geology and geography professor at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She regularly collected fossils, minerals and other specimens for the College’s Geology Department. She also discovered the bones of Massachusetts’ state dinosaur, Podokesaurus.
Guys, we’re not supposed to know what’s in the red bag, it’s not relevant. Its purpose is just to provide a motivation for whatever happens. They were quoting Tarantino, who quoted Hitchcok.
