I have Gathered some Data
@skysofrey and I recently got into a discussion about names in OFMD. Specifically, how many times does Ed actually call Stede by his name in the show? We could only think of a few examples each and that didn't seem right. And because I'm insane, I decided to rewatch and note down every time a name was used, who used it, and who was being spoken to. Here are my findings!
Before you proceed, please know that this is strictly for fun and because I was curious. There are likely errors in the data (I'm sure I missed some things, I'm just one person.) but! I still think that what's been gathered is very interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some other fun/important/miserable things that I found in my travels:
There is one more time where Stede calls Ed “Edward,” and the only time it isn’t said to him directly. This is when Stede is addressing the petrified orange.
Of the five times that Stede is called “The Gentleman Pirate,” two of them are from Ed.
Ed calls Stede by his name only twelve times in the series. Only two of these instances are spoken to someone else. There are two others when Ed is looking for him at the pier, and therefore spoken to no one.
There are only ten instances of other characters calling Ed something other than his name or “Blackbeard.” Two of these are from Izzy, during the scene in Spanish Jackie’s bar, where he’s informing Stede that Ed would like to meet with him. During this scene, he only uses “my captain” and “my boss.” This is one of the very few times he doesn’t refer to Ed to other people as “Blackbeard” and it’s at the time that is arguably the most important. (He’s an idiot.)
Out of the twenty times that Ed refers to himself, fourteen of those are as “Blackbeard/The Kraken.” He refers to himself with names other than “Ed/Edward” 70% of the time. 50% of the times he refers to himself by his name are during the beach scene in episode nine, and there is only one instance where he uses his name that is not in Stede’s company. ("Actually, I do want to be called 'Ed' from now on.")
Izzy only refers to Ed as "Edward" to other people four times in the show. Two of those times are when he's marooning Stede's crew, and each time he uses his name in that scene, he takes on a mocking tone. Meaning that 50% of every instance he's referred to Ed as "Edward" to other people, he's been mocking his name.
Ed calls Stede "mate" as often as he calls him by his name, but he only calls him "mate" directly.
Stede calls Ed by his name only once more than Izzy does.
80% of the times Ed refers to himself by name happen in episode nine.

THE PERMANENT RAIN PRESS INTERVIEW WITH THÉO AUGIER BONAVENTURE
Tumblr media
Théo Augier Bonaventure has been immersed in film for much of his life, with his career taking stride over the past five years after a move to Paris to pursue cinema studies. He is passionate about his work and the characters he plays, including his role as Florian Simon in Netflix’s new series, XO, Kitty. The highly anticipated spinoff to Jenny Han’s beloved young adult To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise introduces some fresh faces into the fold, adding layers to the story, while having their own to tell.
We spoke with Augier Bonaventure about his eager pursuit of the arts, connecting with Florian on a personal level, experience and knowledge gained from XO, Kitty, and feeling like himself in his fashion.
The following interview contains spoilers for XO, Kitty.
I have known I would become an actor since I was 4 years old. I haven’t really thought much about it, I just always knew this is what I would be doing with my life. Then, at 13, I discovered a French indie film called Pieds nus sur les limaces. I fell deeply in love with it, and made the conscious decision that I’d be making movies for as long as I’ll be alive.
Did you have a creative upbringing and family, and were they supportive of your move to Paris to pursue acting?
My family isn’t in the arts. They were supportive of my move to Paris as long as I’d also go to college. So I went to university to study cinema. When I moved to Paris at 18, I was very busy : acting school, university, and I was also a waiter because Paris is a very expensive city compared to Athens.
Did you have any nerves making the move? What factors went into your decision?
I had absolutely no nerves because I wanted to live in Paris so much that I didn’t think it through. It wasn’t easy the first two years, to be honest.
I wanted to live in Paris because I really believe in living an artistic life. I want my life to be filled with exciting projects, artistic friends and long talks about movies and ideas. I felt that I could live that here in Paris, and I do.
Tell me about your studies in Paris; what did you major in, and what valuable lessons did you take away from your classes?
I went to college to study cinema, but I was consciously keeping a distance between what I was taught and what I decided to make of it. I think there can be a danger into over-intellectualizing films and ideas, and I didn’t want to start thinking in any way that was not mine.
On the other hand, I had the time of my life at my acting school Laboratoire de l’acteur. My teacher, Hélène Zidi, really strengthened my passion for acting and taught me a lot, and I intend to make her proud. She is very important to me.
You wrote and directed your short film Haut et Fort in 2017. What did that experience and project teach you about yourself and your capabilities as a filmmaker?
I self-produced and directed Haut et Fort before having set a foot on any set as an actor. I just wanted to tell that story and didn’t want to wait. In English, the title translates to Loud and Strong. I did it for myself. I used to be very shy, and I wanted to get loud. It taught me that I am absolutely capable of leading a project, and that I have so, so, so much to learn, both as an actor and filmmaker.
Are you still writing, and do you have that desire to do more work behind the scenes?
Acting is what I love doing most in life. It’s what I’m born to do. But there are some stories I want to tell myself. I intend on continuing to write because it keeps me grounded. I’m very focused on acting right now, but I will, for sure, do more work behind the scenes.
You star as Florian Simon in XO, Kitty. What can you share about your audition and casting process?
I love auditioning. This is the only project I’ve done having not met anyone in real life before filming started. Since I live in Paris and the producers were in Los Angeles, all auditions were done either through self-taping or Zoom. It was pretty funny because, due to the time difference, I would have auditions at midnight. The audition process lasted 3 months, so that was nerve wracking. But good things take time, right?
youtube
How familiar were you with Jenny Han and the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise?
I had of course heard of To All The Boys franchise because who hasn’t? But I hadn’t watched the films. Before taping for the first time, I watched all three movies with a friend and we had such a great time.
What conversations did you have with Jenny and Sascha Rothchild about Florian, and how were they as resources and leaders?
I really think my characters through. So, before flying to Seoul for filming, I had prepared an extensive list of questions and suggestions I wanted to talk about with Jenny and Sascha. And they were so open and interested in what I had to say that it made me feel very confident. They are amazing, honestly. They clearly know what they’re doing and they want you to feel as free as possible. And that’s the best thing that you could ask for as an actor.
Florian is French and Greek. Was this incorporated into your character before or after you were cast?
When Jenny Han learned I was half Greek, she told me she was interested in adding that layer to Florian. I was thrilled. I’ve never had the opportunity to act in Greek before. I’m just putting it out there for Greek filmmakers : I want to make Greek movies.
What backstory were you either told, or created yourself for Florian in terms of his upbringing? What are his goals, values and major personality traits?
One of my favorite parts about being an actor is when I’m preparing the role and creating the character in my mind. I consider this my secret, the little things I keep to myself. In a lot of ways, my job is to play secrets. And secrets aren’t supposed to be told. So I’ll keep his backstory for myself. But I can share that he’s not as confident as he wants to appear.
What major similarities or differences do you see between yourself and Florian?
I think we both dress pretty well. We’ve both been through our parent’s divorce, though I was younger than him when it happened. And I’m (kinda) ashamed to admit, I used to cheat too in high school. A lot. I also think that’s why I wanted to become an artist. You can’t cheat if you want to be an artist.
His parents are going through a divorce, and Florian faces a lot of pressure with his grades and a possible custody battle for him. What emotions did you draw upon?
I too am a child of a messy divorce, and I do know how it can play with your head. And make you feel guilty of things that are absolutely not your responsibility. I tried to reconnect with that wounded part of me. And I think I did. Acting can be pretty healing in that way.
What was your favourite scene to be a part of, and why?
The one where I’m arguing with both my parents over the phone. There is a lot going on in this scene : Florian’s trauma from the divorce, his fear of being abandoned, his shame over his own sexuality that comes from his family, his fear of losing Q and the life he has created for himself, his anxiety over his grades slipping. Being French and Greek, it was interesting for me to be able to act in both languages. It is also the scene that really crystalizes Florian’s and Q’s love story and need for each other. I love this scene.
What was your favourite scene that you were not in, and why?
One of my favorite scenes is when Yuri is arguing with Jina in episode 9. It feels really sincere and Gia and Yunjin are heartbreaking in it. Gia really is brilliant when she officially comes out to her mother and says : “I’m gay. Full stop. End of discussion.” She really is a great actress.
It’s revealed that Florian cheated on his finals, and he doesn’t feel much shame or embarrassment as he’s “not hurting anybody.” Do you think there’s any redemption on his part, or is he happy with the decisions he made? What factored into his decision?
I think he does feel embarrassed about what he did. He just doesn’t show it. I wanted Florian to be somebody that was very uncomfortable being vulnerable. Also, when he finds out he took Dae’s spot, he really feels bad for his decisions, because that was not his intention at all. He just wanted to stay at KISS. His wrong action was therefore created out of his love for Q. And I personally can forgive a lot of mistakes that are made out of love.
A large part of Florian’s storyline is his relationship with Q. How long do you imagine he’s known Q for? What do you think intrigued him about, or attracted him to, Q?
Florian is quite new to KISS, so I don’t think he’s known Q for more than a year. I think that what attracted Florian to Q is the fact that he’s a really chill guy, something that Florian really isn’t. I think Q grounds Florian in a lot of ways.
Tumblr media
Off-camera, they begin to build their relationship before Florian “proposes” and they become official boyfriends. What do you think strengthened their bond and connection?
Honestly, in my mind, a lot of it was making out in secret places at school, like in the library scenes. I also think they got pretty good at watching scary movies as a way to end up cuddling. I’ve also imagined that Florian would show artistic French movies to Q, not realizing Q was falling asleep every time.
What was it like having Anthony Keyvan as a scene partner, and did you discuss your characters’ relationship?
Anthony’s been in the business for a while so I was very admirative of his confidence on set. He was a great partner for me, always fun. We did discuss Florian’s and Q’s relationship, but the most important part was just hanging out and getting to know each other as people.
Did you work with an intimacy coordinator for your scenes with Anthony, and if so, what can you say about the importance of these positions in a production?
We worked with a wonderful intimacy coordinator, Kristina Arjona. In France, we are only just starting to have intimacy coordinators, so it was a first for me. As a young actor, you want to do your job really well and you want to be very professional. So, I have had times in the past where I did things I wasn’t very comfortable with, but didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to sound annoying.
I had a conversation with Kristina about this and she reassured me that this is exactly why she was there. So that we never feel uncomfortable. It gives you a lot of confidence and a sense of safety to know that you have the right to say “no” to anything you don’t feel aligned with. And that you won’t be judged for it. Considering all that we have heard in the last years about this industry, I believe intimacy coordinators to be extremely important. I learned a lot thanks to Kristina.
What are Florian’s first impressions of Kitty, and how does that perception of her change through the season?
The story I told myself was that Florian viewed Kitty, in a way, as his little sister. I really loved our dynamic in the party scenes, when Florian and Q are helping her hunt for boys. I think Florian actually becomes prouder and prouder of Kitty the more she goes after what she wants.
What can you say about Anna Cathcart, and how she led the show as Kitty?
I’m going to quote Lady Gaga to answer this question : Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before…
Seriously, Anna is as amazing as you can imagine her to be. Kind, professional, always on time, deeply interested in her character, aware of what’s going on. She cares about how other actors feel on set. That doesn’t always happen. She’s a brilliant person. And you just have to watch the show to see for yourself how brilliant she is as an actress.
If renewed for a Season 2, what might you be interested in exploring with Florian’s story?
I think Florian is dying for Q to understand and forgive him. So, I’m interested in seeing if they can work it out and try to find common ground despite their different values. Also, reading the many messages I’ve received since the show was released, I realize that a lot of people are connecting with Florian’s struggle with his parent’s divorce and how he feels like doesn’t belong in his own family. I think we should dig into that.
Are there any other specific storylines you’d be excited to see expanded upon?
Like many of us, I want to know what’s going to happen between Kitty and Min Ho!!!
You filmed the series in Seoul, South Korea. Describe your time in Seoul and their culture. What are some of your favourite memories, and how did you build a connection with your castmates?
Seoul was wonderful. The people were so kind. I’m a fan of iced coffee and you can buy it anywhere in Seoul. The food was absolutely amazing. A lot of the bonding with my castmates was literally done through eating tons of food together. I can’t even remember how many Korean barbecues we went to.
Tumblr media
You also have a love for fashion and modelling; how did this originate, and how would you describe your personal style?
I love fashion but I am not a model. Fashion is a very recent interest. I think it started when I started asking myself some questions about artists I admire. Like : Would David Bowie had been David Bowie if he didn’t wear what he was wearing? I believe that the clothes you choose to wear can have a profound impact on your life. I would describe my personal style as a current ongoing experiment.
We know you love CELINE. What do you admire about this brand and why does it align with you and your fashion sense?
I think [CELINE creative director] Hedi Slimane is absolutely brilliant. I would love to work with him in the future. I think he is an artist and that he understands artists. I feel like myself when I’m wearing CELINE. And I want to feel like myself for the rest of my life.
Are there any specific designers or brands you’d love to work with?
I’m also working with Paul Smith. They are extremely talented and kind people. CELINE and Paul Smith are good for me. Also, if Valentino wants to give me a call, I will answer!
Do you have aspirations to walk a runway at a fashion show or during fashion week?
No. Though I would love to play a very troubled model in a film. Have you seen the film Gia with Angelina Jolie? She’s brilliant.
You have the young adult fantasy film Silver, upcoming. What can you share about this project and your character, Grayson?
I think this film is going to be really good. Helena Hufnagel, our director, is amazing. She’s beyond talented. That goes for Jana McKinnon too, our leading actress. I am proud of my work on that film, and I can’t wait for the world to see it.
If you could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?
I’d be cookies and cream. With huge pieces of cookie dough. Melted chocolate on it. And if possible, a warm brownie under the whole thing.

Ten Doubts You Should Clarify About Studio Acrylic Paint | studio acrylic paint
Before the pandemic, bounce in San Francisco meant the alpha of the craft-fair season. Some weekends, DIY connoisseurs would army to the Fort Mason Centermost for Arts & Culture to buy the assignment of bounded artisans, like adornment maker Gretchen Carvajal. There was consistently a advanced array of adornment and crafts for sale, but, according to Carvajal, there was never a advanced assortment of people. “Every time I do an event, I’m like the alone bell-ringer of color.”
Born in the Philippines and aloft in the Central Valley, Carvajal is the architect of Brwngrlz (www.brwngrlz.com), which makes handmade adornment abnormally for women of color. Its pieces, priced at $20 to $40, are adventurous and meant to be noticed. Laser-carved from clear-cut acrylic in ablaze hues, the earrings allure sunlight to crawl through and casting bright caliginosity digest the canvas of the wearer’s skin. The shapes and etchings of the designs are aggressive by Carvajal’s childhood.
Carvajal based her aftermost collection, Reclamation, on the adumbration abstract on her family’s blubbery bandy accommodated blankets. As a child, she advised the blankets a blatant adumbration of her aberration from others; the accumulating expresses her ambition to accost them, forth with added genitalia of her accomplishments she already pushed away. Anniversary allotment is called for a changeable about who adapted her name to digest — or was affected or pressured to: Arsenia, Felisa, Paramulan, Vicenta, Zenaida.
“It was a amusement at first, again it became a hustle, and again it became a brand,” Carvajal says of her company. She abounding the University of Wisconsin, Madison on a scholarship for announced chat and hip-hop artists. An English major, she advised to assignment on poetry, but in chargeless moments Carvajal begin herself clearing into the acrylic flat in her arts abode hall, announcement music and hardening applique appliques into earrings. Already Carvajal apparent the laser-cutting lab on campus, she would bastard in at 3 a.m. to carve the pieces she spent the day designing and accumulate them aback in her room.
Carvajal came up in the Bay Area balladry scene, and because words accept consistently been her average of choice, her adulation of the laser-cutting lab and of application her easily to accomplish art came as a surprise. She enrolled in academic art classes and anon began to apprentice the abstruse underpinnings of an absolutely altered ability from scratch. Carvajal pursued a flat art amount with a focus on printmaking and neon and accelerating in 2017.
“Being in the hip-hop arena and actuality in the Bay Area, I accept a appealing abysmal ability of cocky that resonates throughout my art,” Carvajal says. Authoritative art, whether balladry or jewelry, has been a way to action her claimed history.
But her adornment aggregation has aims above exploring

@ask-aph-acadia, @lilcutiebear, I’m making a new thread to reply to you both here p:
lilcutiebear: I took French immersion from k-12 so I’m very much in support of learning a second language and not monolingual. Personally I think there are two big factors in animosity towards French immersion in the west that have nothing to do with dislike of francophones. One is that I have seen articles complaining that it is like having a private school within the public school system (I’ve seen articles like that from basically every part of the country not just the west). More particular to the west is that many ppl here aren’t French Canadians or English Canadians and think it would make more sense to teach another language like German or Ukrainian or Chinese or Cree since more people here have those kinds of ancestry. So sometimes it feels like the east is pushing its linguistic divide onto us. I also feel like Anglophones here are different from Anglophones out east because a lot on Anglophones here are only Anglophones because their ancestors were forced to attend school in English rather than their native language. (I.e. My grandpa’s first language is Polish and even though he grew up in a community that was evenly split between poles and Ukrainians (with most kids understanding at least part of both)and his teacher was Ukrainian she wasn’t allowed to teach in any language other than English).
yes absolutely, this is another aspect of the issue that gets totally glossed over in the anglo/franco division. I don’t know about my personal family line but certainly people with my ancestry were discriminated against, forced to learn English, and also put in internment camps for their heritage and speaking Ukrainian. Canada making everything into a Catholic/Protestant or a French/English binary really does not evenly apply to the history of the West in particular but also can cause similar rifts elsewhere. Like we recognize bilingualism is good but 1. our educational systems are often garbage and 2. finding exposure to a native speaker of a target language can vary wildly, and learning French across Canada can be difficult if you are learning International French at School and Quebecois, Acadian or backwater prairie French at home. and 3. it’s always been grating that French (and English) are always prioritized over languages people already speak- we recognize Canada is a bilingual country, but there is not enough motivation or access to materials or native speakers in all locations unless you’re Really Super Determined to get a government job and can afford to move to a city with the programs. Canada is also a country of immigrants, and multilingualism should be celebrated beyond French and English.
ask-aph-acadia: For the criticism: I do remember seeing a few people draw the territories with darker skin, but since I couldn’t really see a big difference in their traits and the other provinces’ in the old art, I really had a hard time seeing if they were white or not, even though I know that First nations and Métis can have paler skin ( One of my characters is actually Métis and has pale skin, but I tried to make it easier to see with the other traits. ) I should maybe watch more of the ProCan videos though, just to make sure I don’t say things that were changed.
Lol i mean good luck, we basically do one video every three years and the projo has come to a standstill but yes Attempts Were Made
I think that if PEI didn,t exist as a province at all I wouldn’t have had that much problems with NB and NS being a couple. I remember thinking that making it this way was excluding PEI from Acadia ( I can’t really say the Maritimes for this situation, since Newfoundland doesn’t have much to do with all of that ), forgetting that it’s been a part of NS too, maybe for a smaller time, but it still happened and gets forgotten a lot in designs for Acadia. PEI was also there when NB and NS talked about becoming one colony, so again seeing them as a couple made me feel like the smaller one was being kind of forgotten. I usually see people making PEI Nova Scotia’s sister/brother, while leaving NB and NS as a couple and I’ve always wondered what made them that different from Prince Ed for other people.
Obviously I’m not a Maritimer, and I do tend to have my reading of the history shaped by what people have done in the past so I can absolutely see that there’s ambiguity in those relationships. I can’t speak for Sherry’s interpretations, I can only attempt to justify them in my own readings. I did get the sense that PEI has a very strong little sibling vibe i.e. the strong independence streak without wanting the responsibility, but I can read NS as the long suffering big brother figure for either of them. I think it’s the strong Scottish heritage that tends to tie NS and PEI together more than NS to NB, but I could be wrong.
As for Alberta and Saskatchewan, I think a lot of people see them as “sister provinces”, me included, and that’s why we usually see them as siblings, without mentionning the project of “Buffalo” ( I think that’s what it was called? Correct me if I’m wrong ).
Buffalo is correct: nowadays we tend to see each other as sister provinces but it can also depend on the reading of the history- Wilfrid Laurier dividing the provinces up can be seen as completely arbitrary with little regard for the people already living there, as an eastern imposition etc, but it rubs me the wrong way to just throw them together because they share a birthday (because I’ve got a personal Dislike of using Confederation as a literal birthday rather than a symbolic birthday and I really don’t like AB/SK portrayed as identical and interchangeable twins (even though lately our politicians have been playing that game loll a story for ANotHER Time). It’s definitely a close relationship that I tend to at least read as adoptive siblings since I’m Not a fan of literal biological relationships- they are definitely the closest out of the former Rupert’s Land territories fam.
For Poutines: I can tell you that when the cheese curds are fresh from today, it’s even better. I live in an area where the milk industry is very big and we’ve got that company called Chalifoux that makes the best cheese curds I’ve ever tasted. A lot of our restaurants use them in their poutines and it’s amazing. I know a few people that prefer shredded cheese but they obviously didn’t taste the best poutine in the region.
Another day another reason to be sad and lactose intolerant ToT and yet i regret nothing
For Alberta: I see that Quebec and Alberta have a very different version of the story. Honestly, I never saw Quebec as a province that tried to bother Alberta, we’re so concentrated on our own politics  that we hardly notice what happens in the rest of the country most of the time. I think the last time I heard about Alberta in the news was during Fort Mac’s wildfires, and a lot happened since it started. But again, we’re so focused on complaining about Phillipe Couillard that we don’t even see what he does, for the most part ( Doesn’t change that he’s a shit PM to me, but that’s a story for another day. ) The only other time I’ve heard about AB in the news was for the pipeline and I can say it’s at that moment that I’ve heard the most people going against the prairies.
That’s regionalism for you, most of us tend to only focus on our own affairs until the minute someone releases some bad poll data about how much one hates the other online and then everyone goes ballistic. p: Pipelines again are a nuanced issue and while I personally am anti-pipeline i understand the reasons AB doesn’t see it that way, again we just got over a long 44 year political dynasty headed straight towards economic dependence on a single resource that our current government is trying to undo, and frankly it’s overly simplistic to just paint us as the bad guys because we’ve made some dumb decisions and backed ourselves into a corner here. We’re dumb, we get it, but don’t say it to our faces lol. Again if you are interested in this stuff I try to reblog news articles frequently on my personal blog under the yeah y yeah alberta tag  (my political bias is Obvious)
The other part of the story is the federal government is built on pitting regions of Canada against each other, and right now the West is the favourite scapegoat. Former PM Harper did not help our image at all in the 2000s-2010s and I take IMMENSE satisfaction knowing that he’s now got to answer to a Muslim mayor and a New Democrat premier, you have no idea. But it’s fear mongering like that where ohhh the west is all about oiiillll and then ignoring the history of Eastern Canada literally just taking it from us and the federal government making it our current major export etc etc is really hypocritical at best (the scapegoating Alberta for the oil and saying ohhh it’s so baaad and unenvironmental and then wanting to live off the profits is something that really is an easy way to piss us off, and the federal government does it all the time.
We really saw Alberta and Saskatchewan as the big bad guys and a girl I knew started to DESPISE the provinces, even though she also hated Quebec? ( She’s the one we had drama with when creating our version of the provinces, she hated Alberta so much that she wanted my character to die… That’s a lot of hatred, but that is also a story for another day. ) I think a lot of Quebeckers are not over that yet, it’s probably time for us to go complain about something else than that ahah.
This is one of those touchy subjects and it Really Pisses me Off when people like to use aph Alberta OCs as their stereotypical villain character without ever considering our perspective or history, it’s happened enough that I’ve not been seeking out ocs for my province anymore for that reason. We already get that enough in mainstream politics, and all it does is make us angrier and act even more out of spite. I’ve seen Quebec and Ontario both treated the same way, of course, but QUON is such a popular pairing that more often than not its just Oh here is Loud Obnoxious Alberta Here To Ruin Everything for Us Once Again. They’re all such good and nuanced characters that it makes me real sad to see them reduced like that. I’ve always seen the relationship as playful banter/teasing between the three of us (and really four because BC is up there with us) and I kind of feel partially responsible for my adlibbing in old IAMP episodes being taken Too Seriously.
Also hating a character is once thing, hating them to wanting them to die is beyond rude, and hating an aph oc for representing a place with real people is Beyond offensive to me, sigh...
For French: I can get why a lot of people complain about having to learn it, it’s a hard language, even for native speakers. We’re also guilty of blaming the “anglos” for making us learn English. I do see how Quebec and Ontario look like they have been working together, but we don’t see it from inside Quebec, since we complain about Ontario as much as we complain about the rest of the provinces ( Ontario is actually our biggest target, it’s easy to do, since we’re so close. ) I don’t mind people complaining about French outside of Quebec, but it’s when people do it inside the province that it bothers me. I already see so many people choosing to speak English instead of French, thus loosing what’s supposed to be their native tongue that I and a lot of other people get on the defensive when we talk about language issues, like when we don’t know what language to speak in in Montreal. Remember when I talked about Phillipe Couillard? Well, he recently asked for English people to come back in the province and I can tell you that it wasn’t welcomed as a good thing by most Quebeckers… ( I could rant about Couillard for hours but I think it’s better if I stop it there) We’re welcoming of tourists but when we hear them complain about how everything’s written in French, it’s at that moment that we get a lot more like the stereotype.I would love to visit one day, and maybe these English class will finally be useful somewhere else than on the internet ahah
(of course once again see Amy’s response above for the western perspective on this issue)
there’s a lot of common jokes that the only unifying thing about canada is everyone’s hatred of ontario and that the best thing to solve everyone’s problems would be if ontario were to separate and leave the rest of canada alone xDD but of course at the end of the day it’s still nothing personal and as much as I can’t quell the Stereotypical Albertan gut reaction to shake my fist at all things Ontarian, I am very fond of this place and have been treated exceedingly well whenever I’ve visited and I hope my good fortune will continue. But of course I understand wanting to protect French within Quebec, and I do really wish it was a more accessible language in other parts of Canada. But yeah, travel, education, all that gives me hope for the future (too bad Canada is so Damn Big or I’d be all over it already).

Marseille
Normally, we aren’t able to go to Marseille on a weekend trip because it takes too long to reach by train. However, I got a slightly longer weekend a few weeks ago thanks to France’s bureaucracy, and used it to visit the seaside city.
The last step in finalizing my visa is a medical exam, where I prove that I am not carrying a dangerous disease like tuberculosis into the country. Once I had proof of residence, I sent it off in the mail, and then received a date (again by mail) for a medical exam in Annecy. I had been warned that I needed to do whatever necessary to honor this appointment because they are extremely hard to reschedule. Mine was scheduled for a Thursday afternoon, when I usually have work. Because of the sparse public transportation in my town, I’d have to leave before school started to arrive on time, and I’d get back with fifteen minutes left in the school day. So, I just *had* to miss the whole day. Shucks!
I always have Fridays off, so my “weekend” would begin on Thursday when my appointment was over. So, once I received my date in the mail, I saw the opportunity to take a trip somewhere further away, and decided on Marseille.
Tumblr media
Nicolas and I went to my medical exam in Annecy, which consisted of only a chest x-ray, a vision exam, measuring my height and weight, and answering a few questions about my general health.  We were also able to go to one of the museums that had been closed when we took a daytrip to Annecy before, and we browsed their Christmas market. The museum had a temporary exhibit about religious art and artifacts from the Haute Savoie region, which I really enjoyed.
Tumblr media
We left for Marseille in the evening, and arrived around 10 or 11 at night. When we arrived at the station, we noticed right away that it was warmer in Marseille than up in the mountains, and we could smell a hint of the Mediterranean in the air.  Marseille has a reputation of being a little rough around the edges (while also being culturally rich), so I was worried about being out at night, but our walk to our hotel was quick and nothing about it seemed particularly threatening.
When we arrived at our hotel, we received our room key without paying anything (?), and then headed up the steep staircase to the top floor. We had a tiny little room under the eaves with a window facing the street below.  It was nothing special, but I enjoy the “attic” rooms a little extra because of my French education. In one of my classes, we learned that in apartment buildings in the 1800s, rich people lived on the ground floor, and poor people (including lots of poets and artists who ended up famous later) lived under the eaves.  I imagined someone like Ernest Hemingway or Charles Baudelaire having this sort of hotel room.
In the morning, we were stopped by the desk clerk on the way out, and we had to give him our keys back until we came back again in the evening.  It was then that we paid for our weekend too. This was fine but bizarre, and felt a little bit like living in a dorm with an RA.
We found a café for our breakfast, and they served us croissants with the tiniest coffees. They literally served it in paper dentist cups! We had been able to avoid tiny coffees up until then in France, but it was bound to happen sooner or later.
Tumblr media
After breakfast, we strolled around the district of Marseille called “Le Panier” (or “The Basket”). It had lots of narrow streets, cool architecture and graffiti, and stoops adorned with potted plants. I enjoyed the way the morning sunlight hit the soft yellow façades—it doesn’t quite look like that where we live.
Tumblr media
We went to a museum at midmorning, and didn’t leave until around 1pm. We were starving and very ready for lunch, but I had planned for us to visit a fort and a cathedral before we ate. We hurried through the stops and then made our way to a noodle restaurant. In our enthusiasm about the warmer weather, we had foolishly gone without coats, so the warm meal did us good.
We used the rest of our sunlight that day to venture outside the city to the Parc National des Calanques. This was the only time that we planned to use public transportation here, so I was apprehensive about figuring out where to buy tickets, how to buy tickets, and where to get on and get off. But everything went as smoothly as possible and we made it to the park without a hitch. We took a short out-and-back trail to one of the calanques (pronounced kah-LONK), a steep valley that leads out into the Mediterranean. The hike was absolutely lovely. We saw white limestone cliffs, the navy blue sea, and plants the exact color of olive green you imagine when you think of a Mediterranean climate. And to top  it all off, the late afternoon sunlight turned everything gold.  When we reached the coast, we also got our first taste of the mistral, a strong, cold wind blowing inland from the sea. We loved the views at the coast but didn’t stay long because it was just too cold!
Tumblr media
We took the bus back into the city and went to get our coats before heading back out for dinner.  We got pizza at a quiet restaurant in the Old Port quarter of the city.  The pizza was oddly like a salad, with rocket greens and balsamic vinaigrette on it. It wasn’t what we had in mind, but it was tasty nonetheless.
Our first stop on Saturday morning was a basilica on top of a big hill. It was a steep climb, but we got lots of nice views of the city and the sea on our way up.  Inside the basilica, we spent some time admiring the altar, the stained glass, and the architecture. Most of the religious art was boat-themed—the paintings in the alcoves depicted some of the scenes from the bible involving water and boats, and there were even small model ships suspended from the ceiling.
Tumblr media
Most of the rest of the day was to be spent touring the islands just off the coast of Marseille. We went to the grocery store to buy picnic supplies for the island. On our way there, we saw that one of the main roads had been blocked off by the police because of the gilets jaunes protestors. We bought our lunch, then looked for the ticket office for the ferry that would take us to the islands. We had a little trouble finding it, and ended up talking to a very nice man who took me at my word when I said I only spoke “un peu de français.”  He went to get his French/English dictionary and did his darndest to explain that we needed to go to the opposite side of the port.  He apparently met lots of people like us, because he had a hand-drawn map of the area ready to show us with labels in English. I really could have done fine with the conversation in French, but he was so enthusiastic about using his dictionary that I let him continue in English. Thanks to his help, we found the right spot, but ended up having to wait a while for the ferry. We went ahead and ate our lunch in a park and soaked up the sunshine (can you tell I’ve been missing the sun in the mountains???).
Tumblr media
The ferryboat took us first to a small island that is home to the Château d’If, the prison featured in The Count of Monte Cristo. The visit would have been a lot more interesting if either of us had read the book before, but it was still a fun visit. We learned more about the prison as it was used throughout history and about Monte Cristo’s author.  We learned that some of the architectural features of the prison had been altered after the book became popular so that the prison looked more like it was described in the book. A case of life imitating art rather than the other way around.
Tumblr media
The second island we went to was bigger and had more room to explore. We spent about an hour and a half walking to one end of the island and back, discovering a rocky inlet, a small beach, and an abandoned hospital along the way.  We didn’t see very many people while we were there; it was nice to get away from the crowds a while.  It was hard to believe that we could be walking along a sunny beach less than two weeks away from Christmas.  In my enthusiasm, I got my leather boots soaked by getting a little bit too close to the waves on the beach.
Tumblr media
When we were back on the mainland, we headed towards our final stop for the day, a museum about the history of Marseille. We were diverted a couple times by the riot police.  It didn’t look very likely that the museum would be open. Sure enough, the museum was closed, as were the vast majority of shops and restaurants in the area. Even the Starbucks was closed! This left two empty hours in our day before it was socially acceptable to eat dinner.  We decided to find an open grocery store and buy some things we could eat for dinner without a refrigerator or microwave, and then headed back to our hotel.
I knew our hotel was not too far from the main road where the protests were happening, so I was worried that it would be difficult to get inside. To make matters worse, Nicolas’ knee was sore from all the walking, so he couldn’t really be too quick on his feet if he needed to be. As we got closer to the turn onto our road, we saw maybe a dozen people running the opposite direction that we needed to go. After we confirmed that there was really no other way to get to the hotel, we plucked up our courage and made a beeline for the hotel door. As it turned out, there weren’t as many people on the street as I expected, but there was a haze all around—tear gas. We covered our faces with our scarves and kept going. In the short time it took us to get to our door, my throat had gotten a little itchy, and Nicolas’ eyes were tingling. but those effects wore off within five minutes. I was relieved that nothing worse happened, and relieved that we wouldn’t need to leave any more in the night.
On Sunday morning, we gave the history museum a second shot, and this time it was open. It was a little disappointing, though. We had our first encounter with stereotypical French rudeness: at the audio guide counter, I said (in French) to the employee, “Hello ma’am, which ones are in English?” but she didn’t acknowledge my existence whatsoever.  We just picked up two headsets, but had to spend several minutes in the first room trying to figure out how they worked, because we had no help from the lady at the counter.  It’s probably not fair of me to blame it on “French rudeness” though, given that it took us three whole months to run into a rude person. Just one ordinary person just having a bad day, I guess.
Tumblr media
We spent about an hour looking at Greek, Roman, and Gallic artifacts before it was time to head home. When we made it back to our apartment, I was tired and apprehensive about everything I had to accomplish in the next week. I had to jump into my next week at school, and on the weekend we were due to leave on our two-week trip. All in all, though, it was nice to get some beachy sunshine before really diving into the Christmas season.

The beginning..? (a long post)
So on Friday the 5th of May I received my project placement confirmation- I will be living in Tomalá (I can’t yet seem to work out if the ‘a’ has a tilde or not so I’m just going to give it one regardless) in Honduras!
I was honestly quite scared that PT (Project Trust, that is, to all of you who don’t have the privilege of naming them on an initials-basis ~ it’s honestly simply because it’s getting a bit tedious writing it all out every time) would place me in one of my backup choices- Chile or Dominican Republic. ‘Holly Does Chile’ really doesn’t have that much of a ring to it. But nothing to worry about there! Holly will still be ‘doing’ Honduras! Cheers alliteration, you did me good.
It is now the 7th of May and after a weekend of intense procrastination, research on my soon-to-be home for a year, and a few hours of bag packing to go towards my fundraising, I have decided to write my first blog post for this crazy journey that I honestly still haven’t acknowledged is actually going to be happening. Writing this may or may not be a way to try to get myself further to acknowledging reality. It may not be though. (It is.)
I think I picked a perfect time to write this, what with my shockingly low levels of preparation for my rapidly approaching A levels, as well as my unfinished Spanish essay (Sorry Mrs Sotokelly- I really did try my best) lying spiritlessly on my desk trying to call out with any bit of life it has left that it is due TOMORROW MORNING. It really is an ideal time to write a rather unnecessary blog post.
It was really motivating finding out more about the specific project I will be doing in Honduras. I can now say that I will be teaching basic English to primary school children and also conversational English to high school pupils, as well as to teachers & students coming from surrounding schools.
As well as teaching English, I’ll be setting up extra-curricular activities. PT suggest art/crafts, music, drama, debating and sports. I think we all know that my forte here is sports, so I can confirm I will be teaching the community of Tomalá how to manage to mess up a simple throwing technique, how to trip over a stationary ball, and maybe even how to blame your hard-working teammates for your poor skills. Without even moving a muscle.
So that’s the basis of what I will be doing over there. I’ll be living with a host family for the year, which will hopefully make it even easier for me to immerse myself in the local community. I will also be spending the year with my project partner, who I won’t meet until training in June. I’ll be spending every waking hour with this poor, poor individual, so lets hope they’re willing to endure an absolute emotional wreck. I will better myself for you, future partner X
As I haven’t really posted anywhere about my fundraising, I’ll try to sum it all up here. I didn’t really start to make proper dolla until last December, and back then I was really s***ting bricks about how in the name of Jesus Christ Himself I was going to be able to raise £6200. But, lo and behold, I am now sitting (not literally) on £5749, with just over a month left to collect the rest! £450 is really not a lot of money in comparison to how much I’ve already raised, so I’m actually pretty proud of myself and all my lovely familia and amigos who have helped me get this far! (Big shoutout to the boyos (that’s u Dad) at Colinward Pharmacy for a v. generous donation).
To get all this sweet sweet cash I: held a couple of coffee mornings at my humble abode, selling my Mum’s crafts and offering an abundance of cakes; sold some unwanted jewellery; begged & pleaded family members for loose change; sold my piano (a heartbreaking moment); passive-aggressively shoved information about how to donate in the faces of loved ones; hosted a sponsored walk up CaveHill (and almost died when we took a questionable route to the top) and bagpacked at my local M&S! Not to mention of course, a very generous donation from The Allan & Nesta Ferguson Trust.
So there we go, exactly £451 left to raise, with about 7 weeks left to raise it. I will then be attending my training course on the Isle of Coll, in Scotland, to prepare me for this challenging year overseas. I booked flights etc. today for this and it made it all feel oh-so-real, but I still find myself having major difficulties accepting that in just 3 months, I will be living 5000 miles away from everyone I now know, and will be standing in front of a classroom of (hopefully) eager students teaching them the alphabet or how to count up to 100. Maybe they’re more advanced than that, but I guess we’ll see.
It’s about 2 in the morning now, so I guess that Spanish essay will have to wait just a little while longer. Thank you for reading, all 2 of you. Spreading endless love from my little room here in Belfast.

Arrange the chairs in two or more lines so the students sit facing one other person. If possible put a line of tables in between to make the setup more realistic. Depending on how well your students know each other and your target language , they can either use their real identities or invent a person to play. Students can either keep their own card, or to make things more interesting, put all the cards in a hat and draw a random person. If students used invented people, they can give their impressions of personality, and see if the adjectives they use match what was written on the card. Plus, they can say who they think is the best match for them as a friend, based on hobbies, personality, likes and dislikes. If you wish, they could also do the above as a written activity, as a message to a friend describing how the speed dating went. This is a particularly good idea when your target language is reported speech.

The modern metropolis of Manchester, which has openly embraced the 21st century, was largely inspired by the musical revolution which had preceded it, producing globally recognised bands such as Oasis, The Stone Roses, New Order, The Verve and the Bee Gees. It is this diverse understanding and acceptance to change which makes Manchester such a unique place, and that is why AsianD8 looked to venture further up the M6 from Birmingham to introduce our services further afield.

A decade recap
This is gonna be long.
I started this before the new year but ended up getting too busy to work on it and add to it and forgot about it. 😅 It’s unfinished and there are details missing, clearly. But it’s still nice to be able to look back at what I remember and how I’ve overcome specific events in my life. ❤️
2010 - age 15
I live in Cali MO. I’m a volunteer vet assistant. I help take care of the animals and help with procedures here and there. I’m pining over my childhood best friend of 9 years. However, the cute guy with a goatee in my Desktop Publishing class who makes me laugh is also getting my attention... I’m going into my last year of track and field, as my knees can’t take it anymore and I no longer enjoy it. I’m small, tan, love to run, but I’m extremely socially awkward and shy. I’m going through a lot of family issues. I see my brother for the last time in years. I spiral into depression. My body doesn’t cope well with the stress. I wish to die but fail. I almost start the decade out not with a bang, but with a bottle of pills.
2011 - age 16
I’m not very eager to get my drivers license. The freedom sounds great but I’m not ready for the responsibilities. I’m scared, actually. I pass my test on the third try because this time I’m finally able to take MY car for my test. I drive a black Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, supercharged with stripped decals. I’m hit on for my car a lot. I’m very much an art student. I got that guy in Desktop Publishing’s number and I took him to a concert for our first date, where we became boyfriend and girlfriend. First date lol. I work at McDonalds for my first real job but only briefly, as I couldn’t handle the social pressures and many people there are fucking mean. I go work at a store in town instead and like it a lot more. Sophomore year isn’t too bad. I was scouted for a dual school program because of my passion for graphic design and art and am accepted into next years program. I’m an honors student.
2012 - age 17
Junior year. I’m attending two schools. I go to JC High in the mornings and Cali High in the afternoons. I’m admired for my drawing ability using Wacom tablets. I’ve been with Travis for a year now. It’s cool dating a senior to me. I’m still driving my Grand Prix. I work at a gardening center during summer and a store during the other seasons. My friend group is disbanded, but it’s okay. I attend my first year of prom. Mom got us a limo which was super unnecessary looking back at it but we had a great time. I have to go to court against my father. I have to tell them that during my time there, I had to be a stand-in parent for my brother and he would often forget to feed us or I would have to leave my homework to do on Sunday nights when I was finally back at my moms which makes my grades suffer. Making me swear on the Bible was kind of a weird thing to do. My mom and I win the court case but I’m absolutely heartbroken and crushed that I had to stand at a podium and tear my dad apart. But at the time I was so angry and bitter.
2013 - age 18
Senior year. I’ve been with Trav for two years. He’s in college which is hard on me. Hard on us. He surprises me at homecoming by texting me to turn around and bam, he’s behind me after not seeing him in probably 2 months. I drive Matthew to school with me as he’s starting his freshmen year. I’m class president of my Graphic Communications course study and I’m sure that graphic design is what I want to go into. However, I hate being told what to do and the lack of creative freedom. My Grand Prix’s transmission gives out on my way home from school one day and I bawl my eyes out. My mom gets me a Kia Forte because I wil have to commute to college so it’s best to have a reliable car. Unrelated but still important, I’m involved in the record number of cars involved in a pileup in my city (6 cars) and am the only one not charged from the ordeal. Kinda nifty and cool but kinda shitty at the time. I graduate high school and see some family members for the first time in years. I’m not thrilled. I spend my graduation wanting to get out of my dress and gown and go hang out with friends and our boyfriends instead. I go to Kansas City to be with Trav when I can.
2014 - age 19
I move to Jeff City with my mom. Trav and I have been together for 3 years. He gets into a terrible car accident which affects him for the remainder of our relationship. People question why I stayed with him because of his inability to do a lot of things we were able to prior and I tell them it’s because I love him. He moves back home to do college online, which makes things a lot easier. I’m not excited for college whatsoever, but attend anyway since my first two years are essentially free. I’m an art student, mostly working to tweak my finer skills in fine art. I love painting and drawing and especially doing life studies and figure sketches. But I’m losing my passion. I work at a store as a cashier and want to tear customers into pieces when they’re rude. I’m getting anxious about college and am starting to question whether I’m on the right path or not. My cat, Tiger, who I had for 10 years, also goes missing. I never find him despite searching and doing everything I could in my power. That still kinda gets to me. I work as a server and hostess. My days typically are as follow: wake up, go to school, go to work, stay up until 3am taking tests and doing homework. Rince and repeat until losing it mentally. I made the deans list. This continues for months and it’s absolutely mind-numbing.
2015 - age 20
I got my Associates, which I forget exists 95% of the time. I’m about to move to a university finally! And live in a dorm finally! With my best friend! Oh, now she’s not coming. Oh. And now someone else has taken her spot in my dorm. Oh. She speaks very little English. She’s rude. She wakes me up in the middle of the night. She’s gross. I can’t handle this. I have to drop a class for the first time in my life because I’m failing a class for the first time of my life. I move up the hall. I retake the class with the newfound ability to rest in my dorm building and pass with an A. I’m angry and bitter at who I used to consider my ‘friend’ for landing me in this financial predicament. I gravitate toward her brother who becomes my best friend since we’re both stuck in the same city together and go to the same college together. Trav helps me make the most of having my own dorm and helps me move out when the time comes. I work at Dairy Queen. I secretly develop an eating disorder while living in the dorm because what is basically my freshmen 15 sounds terrifying to me and it’s extremely important to me I maintain my weight to break that standard. No one catches on to my knowledge.
2016 - age 21
I celebrate my birthday by going to my favorite chill bar in Jeff City. Trav and I have been together for 5 years. We get our first place. It’s a short walk from campus and I love the balcony. It’s spacious enough for our two desktops and for his cat, Ivy. It’s also big enough to have friends over!! If I had many friends...and if he had any friends...I love having my place with my significant other for a while but it loses its luster when I become the only one being able to pay for the bills and rent. But I’m also going to school full time. And am in an honors fraternity and another honors society. I’m a research assistant. I’m working at Dairy Queen. I’m just one person. Now my brother is in the hospital and I’m told about it after he has been admitted for over a month. His condition is affecting his heart among other things. I’m so far away. I’m basically a state away but I can’t leave because I’m the breadwinner and I have to complete school. This is too much for just one person. My college friends are fantastic though and keep me floating with my head up when I constantly feel like I’m drowning.
2017 - age 22
I can’t handle the pressures of completing my bachelors degree and being the only one in my apartment getting work hours. I can’t handle not knowing how my brother is fairing in the hospital. I can’t handle the extracurriculars along with working, tests, having my own psychology research experiment on top of being a research assistant. I can’t handle my own feelings for others. I’m detached from my boyfriend. I can’t handle the strained relationship and do everything to leave and get away. I end it just before the 6 year mark partially out of guilt for my feelings for someone else, partially because I know I can do better, partially because I know it’s ran it’s course, partially because I feel like I don’t know my type or myself, partially because I know I need a partner more fiscally reliable, and partially because I’m scared he will propose to me. Because I intend to say ‘no.’ Everyone pushes it but I know I would say ‘no.’ I work at Dairy Queen for a few months after I graduate to figure out my next move. When my boss makes a comment that Psychology majors don’t amount to anything, I go home and apply to a psychiatric hospital nearby and get an interview within three days. I work my new job and work at Dairy Queen until December, as she’s not giving me any hours anyway to spite me and quit DQ in favor of the hospital. Two jobs doesn’t feel that bad when one is slashed so hardcore to spite you. I’m promoted from Expressive Therapy Assistant to full on Expressive Therapist within months. I feel loved. I feel needed. I feel nervous. But I feel like I’m making a difference. I also begin to fill the gap of my long relationship with several short term relationships. Oops. It was unintentional.
2018 - age 23
I’m working at the hospital and I’m thriving. I’m loving it. I feel like a badass. I feel important. I drive a lot. I have to stay overnight when it snows. I’m maintaining my apartment by myself as Travis moved out. It’s expensive and scary. I invest most of my energy into my work and when I’m not working, I’m doing everything I can to leave town to be with my boyfriend - my childhood best friend I almost dated in high school whom I’ve known for 17 years by this point. Whoops that didn’t last. I date a coworker. Whops that didn’t last either. I dated my ex’s friend. That actually lasted longer than I thought it would. I move into a much cheaper apartment - a two bedroom duplex. I traded in my balcony for a yard and an awning to park my car under.
2019 - age 24
I fucked up and lose the job I love, but it’s okay. They even tell me I was damn good at what I did and they’re only forced to fire me because of policy. I have a job the very next day much closer to home. I hate what I do for months because it’s mind-numbingly boring compared to my old job. I’m promoted. I have authority. I have a say in whether clients can stay with us or not. I have a say if someone needs to get fired (though I haven’t had to exercise that yet). Things are shaking up. The company isn’t doing well because of grants. But we’re keeping our head up for our clients. The grant-funded program I’ve been writing for months gets approved. Also I have a dog! He’s awful, I love him. I meet some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life and consider them to be some of my greatest friends I’ve ever had. But I’m still not brave enough to tell them I was fired from my last job. And I don’t intend to for as long as I can keep it a secret. I date a few good guys but none of them stick but maintain friendships with them if they want to. My grandpa passes away which affects me more than I can admit truthfully. This does help me rekindle my relationship with my dad though which I’m grateful for. I still don’t know what I want to do as a profession. I still don’t know what I want to go back to school for. I want to move to a bigger city and live with friends but I’m using this time to train my dog, make money, and just try to live. I get very comfortable with my own body and delve into photography, only this time being a model rather than the person behind the camera! It’s fun. Can’t do shit in winter though lol.
2020 - age 25
I started the year surrounded by friends I sincerely hope I still have years from now. I was given a promotion and a raise of a few thousand dollars. I’ve met someone who can stay up late with me laughing about funny memes and videos and will sing to music with me while driving down the highway. People come to me for mediation at work and clients say thanks for my presence. I still very much want to move away, but it would currently be foolish of me to leave while the grant-funded children’s program I’ve slaved over writing on and off for months is finally getting off the ground and going around by word of mouth. Plus, my savings is able to increase again. Plus plus, being a boss is fun and being in charge of so many people feels rewarding when things are done right by your word. I’m happy and things are going well ❤️ who knows what else will come with this year?

Imagining the Future of Inland Waterways: Erie Canalway NHC Hosts World Canals Conference
SYRACUSE, NY. (October 12) – From September 24 to 28, delegates from around the world convened in Syracuse, NY to discuss the many facets of canal development, and to learn firsthand about the engineering and economic marvel that is the Erie Canal.
As host of the 2017 World Canals Conference (WCC), Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor (NHC) welcomed more than 420 attendees from 19 US states, five Canadian provinces, 14 countries, and three continents. Participants enjoyed dozens of presentations highlighting the latest innovations on the world’s historic waterways, as well as tours and entertainment on the waterfront. Organized around the theme, “Our Vital Waterways: Agents of Transformation”, the conference also celebrated the bicentennial anniversary of construction beginning on the Erie Canal in 1817.
The WCC is an annual opportunity for canal enthusiasts, professionals, and scholars to meet and exchange best practices regarding the protection of historic canals, revitalization of canal systems, historical interpretation, and the capacity of canals to spur economic development and urban renewal.
As the hosting organization, Erie Canalway NHC was also given the chance to showcase the history and significance of their canal system.  Following its completion in the mid-19th century, the Erie Canal connected the Hudson to the Niagara River, the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, opened up the West for settlement and effectively aligned New York City at the crux of domestic and international trade and commerce. This had enormous ramifications for the state and the nation as a whole. In 2000, the Canal was recognized by Congress as one of the most successful and influential feats of civil engineering in North America by receiving a National Heritage Area designation. In 2017, a National Historic Landmark (NHL) designation followed.
“We were thrilled to join Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor for this event,” said Peter Samuel, Program Manager for the National Heritage Areas Program in the Northeast Region of the National Park Service. “It is wonderful to see the heritage areas and community partners come together on an international stage to share their incredible work.”
A three-day speaker series formed the cornerstone of the event. Panelists highlighted initiatives for re-imagining the role of canals in their home communities through topics such as: canalside revitalization in Buffalo, NY; celebrating and interpreting canals through public arts and events in the Netherlands and Scotland; inspiring waterway tourism on the Sault St. Marie Canal in Ontario, Canada; the environmental clean-up and remediation of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, NY; and the restoration of significant canal sites in Lockport, Port Byron, and Seneca Falls along the Erie Canalway.
Elissa Garafalo, Executive Director of Delaware and Lehigh NHC, lead a session about Inspiring Connections along the Delaware and Lehigh Canal.
“I was absolutely honored to have been chosen to speak,” said Garafalo. “It was a fantastic opportunity to show how Delaware and Lehigh makes the past relevant to present day by creating a sense of place distinct to our region and inspiring the stewards of the future.”

Erie Canalway NHC also exhibited its rich regional history by leading participants on study tours north along the Oswego Canal, east toward where the 1817 construction began, and west to Port Byron Old Erie Canal Heritage Park and the future location of the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls. The tours gave visitors a glimpse into the historical assets and communities created as a result of the canal.
Although absent of the barges and schooners that once crowded its waterways, the canal continues to influence these places along the corridor. Tasked with the protection of the 524-mile corridor, the NHC provides numerous economic and recreational services to its 3.2 million residents. One new initiative spearheaded by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo will connect the 360-mile Erie Canalway Trail to the Hudson River Valley Greenway. The Empire State Trail project will make 750 continuous miles available for walking and biking between New York City, Montreal, Albany and Buffalo as the longest multi-use trail in the country.
“Congressman Tonko often talks about the canals as arteries of New York State,” said Andy Kitzman, Assistant Director of Erie Canalway NHC. “The majority of Upstate New York’s population outside of New York City is dependent on this canal system. The World Canals Conference is an incredible opportunity for us to spread the word about our work and gain new knowledge for future projects.”

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the NHC and its partners, collaborative projects like this continue to gather on the horizon. The New York Power Authority, which operates the NY State Canal System, announced during the conference kick-off that a global competition will award $2.5 million to the idea that best re-imagines the NY State Canal System to become an engine for economic growth and tourism.
Although not all canal projects take on such tremendous scale, they can be just as impactful. Julia Wleklinska, a PhD student from Gdansk, Poland, gave a presentation detailing plans to promote sustainable economic development and natural heritage preservation of a neglected portion of a Polish canal. “I am excited to gain insight from work being done in other parts of the world,” said Wleklinska. “The English and Scottish canals are my models for construction, so it was a fantastic opportunity to hear the speaker from Scottish Canals give the opening remarks.”
On the final day of the conference, a ceremonial vile of water from the Erie Canal was passed to representatives from Waterways Ireland, who will host WCC2018. The tradition passes the torch from one host to the next, symbolizing the camaraderie shared between worldwide canal communities, connected by the water they have committed to protecting.

Communication
The right side of my body is weighed down by an oversized bag of wet clothing while the left side of my body balances my jingling keys in my hand. Barefoot, I stumble out of my apartment into the complex’s backyard garden. I begin to hang up my dripping clothes on the drying rack, hoping the hot sun will help me out and dry them in time for my trip to Slovenia. It is a slightly laborious but peaceful task.
But then that peace shatters. A screaming voice floats around me, coming from everywhere although there is no one in sight. I drop the shirt I was hanging up and look around, unsure of what to do. I finally spot a window near my feet and am surprised to find an elderly Croatian lady staring up at me through the glass. And she is PISSED.
She screams and screams while I repeat and repeat “English, I’m sorry, I speak English”. Each time she says, “English?” and then resumes screaming in Croatian, mostly “Ne” or no in English, plus a lot of shaking her head emphatically. I grab all of my clothing and leave, unsure of what to do.
I have since confirmed with the landlord and several other individuals that the garden is indeed communal, and that I am allowed access to it, therefore I was not doing anything wrong. I am left here pondering what in the world she was yelling about.
With the exception of my college psychology class where my professor told me I should seek help learning to communicate, communication has always been my forte. From writing to art to speaking, I have always felt confident in my ability to communicate. Even when I was in Spain and the Dominican Republic, I found ways to communicate when my rusty Spanish would not do the trick. This was truly my first encounter where there was, and is, absolutely no way for me to decipher the situation.
And utter lack of communication is scary. To have such a complete disconnect with someone is jarring. I’m sure this will happen again many more times in my life considering the global majors I aspire towards, but I imagine I will never become used to it. I already knew that the world was large, but today I saw it was massive -- but this time less so with the element of geography and more so with the element of language.
