as we all know, doyoung get chosen as prosperity burger brand ambassador next year (afaik, the burger only available until 24th jan) and the twitter reaction is so.. harsh. i get the sentiment bc mcdonalds has been listed to the boycott list but ppl has been calling him 'names' and purposely using this as the gotcha moment to hate him instead of spreading more awareness abt the boycott. i feel disappointed with him too but knowing he loves the burger so much and the deal has been made since months ago.. idk how to feel. i still want to support him but it will seen like i'm defending him (while in fact, i dont). what do u think about this? i need to talk with someone with rational thinking process so i can sort things out ;-; tysm

Brace yourself to wait out the unleash of anti-comments Doyoung is getting. Antis are using the opportunity, and many fans are confused, shaken by emotions. It will be OK, it will pass soon enough.

McDac's promotion is aimed at SK and it is a charity. Doyoung donated 50mln won for children around Christmas. He participated in the ad for charity as well. Doubting him or blaming him speaks more about a fan's weak sense of morale and integrity than his. These advertisement companies are planned beforehand, moreover, they are created by absolutely different people in different parts of the world. US branch of MD and Korean branch of MD are not the same. Local businessmen buy the right to use the brand name, it's a franchise.

Korea is Korea, it's a country half-globe away from the conflict in question. K-pop has nothing to do with it. There are multiple conflicts and disasters all over the world that happen at the same time. However, people pay attention mostly only to those that are covered by the media. I haven't seen any k-pop fan talking about Armenia-Azerbaijan (and Armenian people experienced a genocide in the past), zero talks about what happens in Haiti, and it's been ages since I saw mention of Ukraine. And Russia-Ukraine war continues with thousands of people being killed on both sides. And it won't stop as long as Putin is in power. Noone is cancelling him in the fandom, for some reason. US is abuzz about the migrant crisis, but the rest of the world is blissfully unaware. How many people die in those jungles?

I can give you an example of fans only following the guidance of a laser pointer. You should be aware of regular "controversies" over t-shirts, headwear, hair styles, stage design. Doyoung was given a shirt with themes of Moscow (the cathedral) and Orthodoxy (Mary with Jesus, they way it is portrayed on Russian icons). Has anyone sounded concerns that Russia is on the black list, that Doyoung is a non-Orthodox Christian, that using religious imagery for fashion on a "see-thorough" shirt can be offensive for believers/cultural appropriation? (Russia has laws nowadays, plays like "Jesus Christ Superstar" can't be played). Or that such tattoos are actually prison culture, like with yakuza? Noone batted an eye. And rightfully so, because it's just a silly shirt from a fashion collection.

4. I understand fans want to do good, but what they are doing is mostly virtue-signalling. Their online actions don't help.

When Russia attacked Ukraine many companies left Russia. Either on their own or being pressured to do so. The results:

Common people lost their secure jobs with good salaries. Companies like IKEA brought with them their corporate culture of taking care of their employees, what can't be said about Russian workplaces. Russia is a very hard market to enter due to local corruption and no real protection by law. I know IKEA spent like 10 years to do so. The fruits of labour of those middle level executives were just scratched off like that.

The foreign companies were either seized or sold cheaply to Putin's cronies. As a result, he gained more of their support, because he gave them "feudal lands", conpensated for their losses due to the war and sanctions.

The state started propaganda "domestic replacement" campaign (to calm down the people, "we don't need the West or anybody!"). Money were given to any shady bussenesmen who promised to invent "Russian alternative". In reality, those money were taken and no product developed. Or a label with a Russian company name plastered on a Chinese product like a tractor. Again, another scheme for people in power, from "the elite", to fill their pockets with money and to not mind the war started by Putin.

Apple, Coca-Cola and other products are still present in the shops. They are just imported/smuggled via neighbouring countries and sold for higher price. Commoners suffer because of the prices, businessmen and the brands stay OK. And taxes still go to the state.

Many freelancers and artists either lost completely the opportunity to earn money with their craft or needed a long time to readjust and are earning less. There is little demand for art on the domestic market, so the artists need other countries. PayPal left the country, so no Etsy for them. No direct payments thorough Visa/Mastercard as they don't work with Russians banks anymore either. My own shop were I was selling my watercolours was closed by Etsy. I have to ask foreign friends to get money for me or buy me bus tickets as I can't use Wise or Paypal or WesterUnion. Politicians and businessmen? They are doing just fine. They simply opened accounts for a high price (like two montly salary of a commoner) in neighouring countries and use those credit cards. I can't shift to working for foreign publishing companies and not paying taxes to my government because I don't have a credit card to receive payment. I earn twice as less due to currency exchange as well.

In the end. Yes, Russian commoners suffer. The regime doesn't. We are talking oil, gas and natural resourses like minerals. Russia is still paid loads of money for them. Those companies leaving Russia did nothing to help to stop the war. The majority of people haven't even used those companies living far away from the capital in poverty to begin with. McDac is for spoiled brats in Moscow, not for workers on factories.

People feel a negative emotion and want a quick and easy solution to it. If I donate following this demanding action ad, I will help. If I re-twit this black list, I will do something for the good.

It doesn't work like that. There is no easy A to B. It's a giant multilayered problem, and more often than not you are being used in an informational war by one side or the other. Hamas terrorists steal the trucks with foreign aid for themselves. And who knows how many fake donation schemes there are. Israel won't listen to the opinion of college students because it's a question of survival as a country for them. The wars in the Middle East won't end as long as their is oil and gas. McDac will lose some money now in one country and earn them back in another by lowering the quality of its products or the conditions for cows raised for burgers or the salaries of its workers in developing countries.

If you really want to do good. Do it in your neighbourhood. And do it smartly, after a thorough reserch. And in the area you want, and not what others pressure you to do. This way you can both control how your contribution is used and see the positive results with your own eyes.

And the cheapest way to do some good? Is to stop being the source of negativity and to stop judging and cancelling other people.

i think a very important lesson that not everybody gets so far is that despite, regardless of, and because of capitalisms increasing reach and seizing of the realm of art... you have got to consume art that isnt mainstream. i think a lot of ppl know this already if they didnt already bc of how hard it is to find anything good mainstream under a capitalist system, but while deconstructions of why/how capitalism works and complaints abt capitalism's effects in general are always correct and valid, sometimes i see takes on here that seem to come from a place of genuinely not understanding art exists somewhere else than pushed in your face by advertisements. ppl who love movies who genuinely don't seem to know where to find movies that aren't made by hollywood. ppl who hate modern booktok but don't know where to read smth unique. ppl who love video games but can't stomach AAA game industry rn and dont seem to realize how many ppl post indie video games for free.

and like. the solution is very simple. consume indie art. watch indie movies from small film festivals and small studios or one-man teams posted on video platforms. listen to indie musicians who have a few thousand listeners on bandcamp or are starting on youtube. play video games from indie developers and studios and modders in your community. read books and poetry self-published by writers you respect online but have been procrastinating reading their work. consume literally any art that cost less than a fucking million dollars to make, any art that was made out of genuine love and effort for the story, however flawed, rather than a flawed and half-polished and immoral story that's bland at best but has a character you know of.

like ik these things will not get rid of capitalism in the mainstream, but these kinds of smaller and beautifully real stories have always existed and all it takes is more than a few minutes of searching the internet to find things you will love. good and meaningful art always has and always will exist no matter the state of mainstream art dedicated to preserving a status quo or making money

CAN I JUST say smthng abt a little life … bc listen the writings great but just … a straight author writing several books in which queer characters (who dont even identify as queer? idk) are tortured beyond belief and then saying the purpose was to show that after a certain amount of trauma people are just broken and better off committing suicide and that “therapy is a dishonest profession bc they cant tell their patients to kill themselves”??? + then people advertising this book as the “next great gay novel” just simply….does not sit right with me?? idk. im all for writing about and exploring trauma but this book started feeling very gratuitous the more i read. on a related note i am so exhausted of consuming so many queer movies/novels and then finding them dead or unhappy at the end 90% of the time. also i dont agree w everything in this article but it was interesting if u wanna read it https://www.vulture.com/article/hanya-yanagihara-review.html

yes!! ive heard a lot of people make this criticism of it for sure, while on the other side ive heard it hailed as a modern classic. obviously as someone who has not read the book i can't contribute to that discussion but from what you say about the author...yeah. yikes. honestly as a person with rather frail mental health i just do not feel like reading this book is something i need or something that would be good for me right now regardless of what my perspective on it would end up being so like. from all the people who have said how terribly distressing it is and how much they would not recommend it to others for that reason i am just. electing to take their advice i think.

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc.)

this'll quickly get into petty territory ok let's see. well so i think in general the cookie cutter fandom trope tendencies suck absolute ass and take all the fun out of actually playing with character dynamics and like. analyzing them idk!!! like it's BORING not everyone fits into. golden retriever/black cat dumb/smart fucking. idk you get it. you're taking away what's compelling and unique abt individual people and stories and writing. i think people did that to robin and nancy a bit and it made me want to scream and turned me away from the fandom quicker cause they were the last part of s4 i found myself caring abt. and let me just say this. it's like people are so goddamn annoying in general about gay ships and i wont pretend like ppl are just cool and great about gay male ships but like. at least SO many people get into them that you're bound to get some actually interesting content. it's fucking bleak out here for the lesbians when people just immediately try to slot them into top/bottom etc dynamics. and don't engage with them as separate characters at all. defining women by their relationships except theyre both women(ish) so you're just making them uninteresting overall. sorry ik it's not that serious esp when the majority of the fans of lesbian ships are queer girls. anyway then they dont even engage with het relationships or the people that do are ppl are like. genuinely cishet and i'd not... interact w them on here idk lol. also i ended up getting pissy about bi steve bc ppl were so anti nancy being anything but hyperheterosexual when to ME, formerly dykenance, she had the markings of a lesbian. she had a very clearly sorta close tense jealous etc friendship and she gets NONE of the love. idc actually abt bi steve like it's fine wider fandom just pissed me off. we all know this.

hello mutual who wonders why people like romance i have reached a conclusion and i want to share it with you if youre comfortable

if not (since its romance themed anyway) you are free to ignore all the info below yet say hi to me anyway <3 hi

anyway, if you've chosen to read this then i believe people obsess over romance and involve it everywhere so much is because of multiple reasons.

first of all, i've heard crushes are said to be very exciting. they make you happy when you think about that person. or at least that is what i've heard from others, i don't think i've had a crush so don't expect me to know for sure. and naturally, one often enjoys positive feelings and crushes fall into that as well. most people also want to be with someone, not necessarily in a romantic sense - but just, have someone to love and to be loved by so they aren't lonely and so that they can always go there for the support they need, you know? and since a crush makes you happy - that seems like a good option does it not? you are bound to the happy feelings because it'd only seem logical to want to be with the one who makes you happy. and so, since they're so bound to those happy feelings and desires to be with a person, they remember their crush for that. and it's not surprising you don't want to be logical because you're happy anyways right? if you feel happy around someone, then most want to go after those feelings instead of the logical thinking they could also use. and that is where the 'unflawed admiration' comes in. they follow their happy feelings and stop to think logically about things such as the flaws of their crush. so that is why they love romance so much, i believe.

and, some people find comfort in being understood by someone and having someone to relate to. you know? that is why they project onto characters and headcanon them their own experiences all the time. and even people who do experience crushes do that, because they enjoy the feeling and they experience it so projecting it onto a character and imagining them with another character gives them the happy imaginations they're looking for. they want to be loved and to love and (as i've explained above why) they look for their crush. so imagining such a happy experience and projecting it onto a character is probably the reason they ship characters together. sadly it's really alienating towards those who don't experience romantic attraction or are simply uninterested in it - because the majority is projecting about their own experiences and so they don't bother to think about others'. i am not saying that is good but i believe it's the reason why it happens

anyway, im done! this got long dnfnvkmjkmrm and obviously since i don't experience romantic attraction i can't know this for sure nor do i claim it's the truth or something. it's just my guesses and reasons why to it. i hope this made sense though /lh and if you did read it then thank you for all this ahbdwehbjnjdfnjmdc

i think why people also obsess over the idea of romance so much is because they WANT that happiness, and thats all romance is ever advertised as. for people who arent happy, they think that a person who understands them so fully would be the solution to everything. but i feel like these people also forget that romance and relationships are a give and take effort. in order to have someone truly get you, you must give them that in return. and that may also add to why couples breaking up and arguing is seen as loveless, bc crushes are always put on pedestals. people dont want to admit that the source of all possible happiness is human too, with wants of happiness and other feelings of their own.

that might be why fictional characters are so popular too, i think. many more options for your so called soulmate without any of the required commitment. you can make them all perfect and stuff, without ever having to be perfect for the character in return. they get the happiness anyway.

its sad, that bc of society, romance is seen as such a fix it all that people dont even bother trying other things that could make them happy. love is never seen as flawed, and so people lose logical sense since they want that so badly. they dont try and help themselves, or appreciate their friends, or the world in general, since romance just must be so perfect and happy. but when they get it, and find out it isnt, they get upset at the work.

imo, i think the only sort of romance that works out are well... ones that arent romanticized. humans clash with humans no matter your feelings, and unless youre willing to put aside personal values and understand the other person or people, things will never work out. romance is just as much work for the happiness and people should realize that, i think.

anyways, thank you again for the discussion, harai!! we may not really get romance ourselves, but with the addition of our logic not being impaired by romantic thoughts, we can understand it together in this way, i think.
