Sorry if this was asked before, but have you seen dungeon meshi? If so, what do you think of senshi? I find him a very hollycore character
I've read it in its entirety and I like it a normal amount. [She's visibly shaking and gripping her keyboard with force as she writes this.] One of my favourite fantasy stories in a good long while. I do like Senshi a whole lot... I love a kind old gruff weirdo going out of his way to help other folks because it's how he helps deal with his own hardships. I feel like people would not be surprised to hear I like him! (Or that I like Namari and Tade and Falin and Marcille a whole lot. It's very hard to pick a single favourite because Ryoko Kui is a very good author.) (I also really like Chilchuck a lot, which I know has surprised at least one person for some reason. LOL)
I've seen maybe an episode or two of the anime. Seems like a fun adaptation so far.

for a while i have been trying to figure out why i like Farcille (dungeon meshi) so much. not to say that i wasn't already a fan of it simply because it was yuri, but there was something there that really appealed to me and i couldn't figure out what it was for a while until it clicked. some spoilers btw
at the time of me writing this, episode 17 has just come out and while watching it and seeing Marcille's reaction to Falin being a chimera and trying to defend her actions despite everything happening around them, i realised why i liked the ship so much.
my favourite trope of all time is "character A falls in love with character B, despite character B being a monster." i know at some point Falin goes back to being normal, even though she still has some semblance of what she once was (i think? i see it in fanart a lot so correct me if i'm wrong). the amount of love and care that these two show each other pull at my heartstrings and makes me happy.
sorry for the long-ish post, i just needed to get my thoughts out about this.

I finished reading all of dungeon meshi a few days ago absolutely loved it and here are some of my favourite things about it MAJOR SPOILERS BTW:
Laois and Kabru may have the funniest dynamic of any characters I have seen in any piece of media ever. Laois thinks kabru is his friend and incredibly friendly. Kabru misinterprets Laois as being basically the greatest evil humanity has ever seen and vows to kill him. In reality Laois is just autistic.
Divorced dad chilchuck
Senshi is amazing in general
After resurrecting Falin but before she gets turned into a chimera, Marcille and Falin do a series of the gayest things possible together short of them being shown having gay sex. Like almost immediately after Falin is rescued
The canaries who are effectively the elven CIA which have the members consist of ex convicts
Itztsumi basically having an existential crisis near the end of the manga after the big bad is defeated.
Both Kabru and Marcille simultaneously rethinking their entire life choices after realising laios became a giant monster instead of killing the winged lion.
The final main villian basically just biblically accurate Aslan.

Who's your favourite character in dungeon meshi mootie? And why? (- izutsumi mootie )
ah that's a bit difficult, they've all got very good bids for that spot. be warned though, only seen the anime, haven't even met Izutsumi yet except for in the sea serpent scene with Kabru, while she's wearing a hood. also, just going to over the main party for now, i'd be here for too long otherwise and it's midnight unfortunately. Chilchuck and Senshi are probably my least favourite of the main cast, but i still love those two. just no specific click, it's difficult to explain. Next is Laios, only because i know a guy exactly like Laios and i'm afraid they don't work so well in real life. otherwise, love his enthusiasm and share his love for ecology. love Marcille, because i'm biased towards magic users and indignant characters and she is both. plus, she just clicks in the way that Chilchuck and Senshi don't. but, as stated, Falin is literally me fr fr. except i'm quite a bit more scared of things than she is. in short, it's Falin because she's the cooler Sam.

Spoilers for Dungeon Meshi, Chapter 88
Laios has just been solidify as my favourite character, I think.
Laios have wanted to become a monster as a child and this hurt me personally. This is a character who clearly has not had that many friends in the past potentially any outside of his sister. He is a character who has had to run away from every opportunity that he has been given. He ran from the military because he didn't fit in and in the panels shown in the background of the winged lion trying to make a deal with him, We see images of Laios being bullied.
The idea that he wanted to be a monster with this context makes a lot of sense. Probably to some extent because he wanted to be a monster so he could be what people thought he was / fear he is because he's clearly been so disconnected from humanity due to how people have treated him because he's a little weird.
Additionally these panels think so much sense for why he reacts the way he did when (To)shiro told him how much he hated him and beat him. With the context that Laios has been treated like this before, his response of "Why didn't you tell me? Why did you pretend to be my friend" makes sense. Because Laios has been so desensitized to those words that should have hurt him.
Additionally, the reveal that Laios has at one stage, as a child, wanted monsters to terrorize villages because he hated humanity also hits so damn hard.
(also this all explains why he's so desperate to save his sister if she was at one point his only friend).
.
.
.
As somebody who grew up as a weird kid this hits in a way that not many other character backstories hit me. I remember being that weird kid and I remember being bullied for standing out. I also have memories similar where I wish those people being mean to me had consequences.
But also similarly, as I grew up I found people that love me for those weird quirks or were weird themselves. Just as Laios finds Senshi who has similar interests, Marcille and Itzusemi who are also social outcasts. And Chilchuck and Namari who love him despite his weirdness.
Basically what I'm saying is that the whole of Dungeon Meshi's plot centers around this autistic man finding people who love him for who he is. And that's fantastic.
Also these panels have cause me so much emotional pain:

Hot Take Incoming! There's no need to get upset with me, this is just my opinion.
If you love Marcille, consider yourself warned not to read if you can't handle criticism about her.
Marcille is (so far as of 2 episodes) annoying and unnecessary. I don't mean as a healer, of course a party needs a healer. I mean as a character. Her purpose in the story seems to be showing how most people in this world would feel about eating monsters. She seems to do little more than slow the show down. If she was removed, the story wouldn't be different enough to matter. Yes, she sets off a couple of events but they could've come from somewhere else.
Let me explain an alternate way the show could've opened without her. It starts with Senshi doing his thing. We get to see how clever he is with cooking and his strengths as a fighter. We watch how the world treats people who navigate dungeons as he does. We see that he's perhaps a bit lonely and wants to share his knowledge. Then we are introduced to the party. We already know how the world treats eating monsters so we don't need a character to constantly remind us.
I think this would've been a more interesting way to introduce the series without needing Marcille.
If you must have a dissenting character, replace Marcille with someone who feels they must abstain for cultural reasons or something. It would be more interesting and would be a chance to flesh out the worldbuilding a bit more.
I just think she drags down an interesting show. She's loud and obnoxious. Regardless of her strength as a healer, she makes impulsive and stupid decisions that put everyone else in danger.
I suppose it could be argued that there could be a payoff in the form of a sort of redemption arc where she becomes less annoying and dangerous. But that's not a good enough reason to include her.
It would be a better show if it actually centered around Senshi rather than Marcille stumbling over herself and crying about it and complaining.
It's not that I just don't appreciate unlikable characters. Villains are consistently my favourite characters. I enjoy assholes and can appreciate an annoying character when it works for the story. My point is that her being annoying isn't adding anything to the show: it's a pointless distraction from what makes the story interesting.
I hope I end up eating my words, but so far I have to watch the show in spite of her.

001 dungeon meshi or 002 susahao :3
i sense a long post so this goes under a cut
| dunmeshi |
Favorite character: I can't choose for my mental health. sorry. I love them all too much
Least Favorite character: ughgh Toshiro. next question
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): ooh...5? Okay so Farcille, Labru (it's not a must-have for me but I like it romantically or platonically), Laios x monsters, Chilchuck's messy relationship with his (ex)-wife, and lastly. Cithis x me
Character I find most attractive: goddd there are so many hot people in this manga and I'm aroace. it depends on the day but top contenders in no particular order are Kabru, Marcille, Laios, Cithis (see above), and Falin. and we can't not love Kui sensei for giving us the Senshi fanservice the world needed.
Character I would marry: I would marry no one but...objectively speaking? OF COURSE Senshi
Character I would be best friends with: Chilchuck !!
A random thought: The moment where Mithrun cries because "even vegetable scraps have their uses" made me feel like I'd been revived from the dead. dunmeshi is so good.
An unpopular opinion: hmm I don't really know?
My canon OTP: canonically no one like. "ends up together" in the super official sense and I'm happy with that! however farcille can count...i think anyways. it's not even coding it's plain as day
Non-canon OTP: like i said, any ship qualifies !
Most badass character: Senshi, because truly what is more badass than caring for the dungeon ecosystem and your friends' health and wellbeing by cooking them a balanced diet out of monsters. all with a single cooking pot too
Pairing I am not a fan of: Izutsumi x anyone. that girl doesn't want a romantic interest nor does she need one <3
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): ...no one? I'm gonna finish my reread soon but I highly doubt I'll find one that I'll think was screwed up
Favourite friendship: The whole party warmed my heart. that hug healed me. ALSO honorary mention to Mithrun and Kabru because again the feeling of being restored and learning to feel again is so real. honorary honorary mention to Izutsumi and the rest of the party because that is the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life
--
|susahao|
when or if I started shipping it: "when I fall under your intense gaze..." I very nearly pointed at the screen and went "YOU'RE BISEXUAL!!"
my thoughts: they invented sapphism actually
What makes me happy about them: I love how Haori does not fucking hesitate to keep flirting with Ryutaro upon finding out that he is in fact Susato. what a queen
What makes me sad about them: the fact that their reunion in-game occurs when Susato is coming back, rushed, on what she assumes to be a family tragedy; and what she finds instead is Haori having been through a horrifically traumatizing event in her absence. both of these girls trying their best to study and have careers in Meiji Japan. the world makes it so fucking difficult for them.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: it's not so much a specific thing done in fanfic as like, an overarching trend that people tend to fluffify them a ton. i get it they're cute and lighthearted but they're also sixteen-year-olds in a world that is unfair to them. that being said, i also don't like the idea of making them 'tragic' for the drama of it all. let them be happy, but also give them depth basically!
Things I look for in fanfic: i don't read a ton of dgs fic these days but i look for good Haori background and characterization
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Gina, Maria...and that applies to either of them lol
My happily ever after for them: marriage marriage fraud (I can't take credit for this idea, since I first heard it from Seven ofc! but it's so real to me)

Do you have any songs you associate with the group and or a particular DunMeshi character? I have a few I associate with Laios and Kabru (mostly Hozier tbh) but been having a harder time for Falin, Marcille, and even Thistle.
the way this launched me into a day long project of making playlists lmfao
This one I haven't curated super well, but I think i put it in a general progression that makes sense. Unfortunately I have a very small range of music that I listen to so Falin just turned into my millionth Sara Bareilles/Ingrid Michaelson themed girlie LMAO
Highlights on this playlist for me:
"Let the Rain" is just an entire mood for post-canon Falin I think. the line that hits the hardest about her for me is "and I always felt it before, that the world was filled with much more than the drowning soul I've learned to be."
"Twenty-three" i know i know i know it's kpop and no one's gonna get the lyrics but I couldn't not put it on the list. it's literally about being 23 and not knowing what kind of "woman" you want to become and still feeling like you want to be a kid a little bit and wanting to be understood but knowing that you don't even understand yourself and feeling like you're running out of time because you're firmly in your 20's now
"Secrets" i know is incredibly personal to Mary Lambert but most of the lyrics really fit and that like... intensely joyful self expression is just so delightful and lovely and what i want for Falin in the post-canon.
"I Am Here" to me, is just the ultimate celebration of being alive, of being joyful and grateful and happy that you're a messy animal that can laugh and hurt. I think Falin would cherish being half-monster, the fact that it gave her a second chance at choosing to be alive rather than sacrificing herself for others and letting that be her entire story, and the freedom it gives her to keep living.
you have to promise not to judge me on this one. you have to. yes i went ahead and curated an entire playlist that has okay-ish transitions/flow between songs and thematically follows Marcille's journey through the story. i also put a bit of kpop on it but it FITS okay she's a girly girl!!!!
It's rough. it's really really rough right now and i'll probably come back to it but the concrete songs i was trying to build around are like...
"What is Love?" it's literally just a girly girl song about wondering what love might feel like. complete with daydreaming about romantic stories and hoping all that wonderfulness will happen to you.
"Men of Snow" okay i know it's Ingrid Michaelson again but hear me out. this song is so fucking heartbreaking. it can be taken in different ways but if you put in Marcille's context it's gutting. it's a song about mortality and the impermanence of everything set to an almost cutesy waltz-beat piano accompaniment.
"Que Sera, Sera" self-explanatory, I think. im lucky this cover is on spotify because it's such a perfect song for encapsulating the entire sequence where Marcille decides to become the dungeon lord. (the second iteration at the end of the playlist is happier, taking the happy and calm interpretation of "what will be, will be", and also includes the second verse about a "sweetheart")
"What Sarah Said" it's a song about being in the ICU waiting for news about a loved one while suddenly realizing that there's nothing you can do. i think almost every line in this song guts me about Marcille, picturing her waiting for Falin to wake up the second time. (it's also my very pretentious attempt at tying the playlist together by answering the earlier question. What is love? "Love is watching someone die.")
"The Last Snowfall" is just. Vienna Teng has been my favourite artist since I was fifteen and part of it is that she has this incredibly beautiful way of leaving lyrics impactful but ambiguous. This song isn't about being afraid of losing someone but miraculously getting a happy ending, it's just an exploration of that fear with a "what if" built in, and I just think it's such a good way of capturing how Marcille was prepared to lose Falin and that was so important, almost even more important than the fact that it ended up being a happy ending anyway. also I wish i could have put in the live version because it's insane
For Thistle the only recommendation I have is Bird Song by Florence and the Machine it's wonderfully eerie, i literally think it's the best musical depiction of that specific kind of guilty murderer anxiety of "the telltale heart" from edgar allan poe

okay I've seen reblog dungeon meshi (idk what it's called) onto my dash for a while now
I am in a engage in other mutuals interests mood
convince me. (you don't have to)
(I swear to God if I sent this to the wrong person I will explode)
YAYYYYYY
do you like fantasy? do you like dungeons and the monsters inside of them but hate the way every fantasy that includes dungeons or monsters seems to be a copy of every other fantasy that includes dungeons or monsters? do you like heart-wrenching heart-warming stories about the innate goodness in people? do you like really good food? do you like lesbianism & indepth female characters? do you like catgirls?
Tumblr media
set in a fantasy world where dungeons - mystical depths full of monsters and treasure - are a lucrative enterprise for any brave adventurer, we follow laios & the remnants of his party (marcille and chilchuck) as they descend into the dungeon after getting wiped out, in order to save laios' sister, falin.
here's laios! he's the warrior of the group. he's strong and kind-hearted and very, very autistic. like supremely autistic. king of autism.
Tumblr media
this is marcille! she's (one of) the group's mages. she's an elf who cares about her appearance and really hates monsters. she also blows things up.
Tumblr media
and then chilchuck! my favourite of the original trio. he's a half-foot, and he's the party's picklock. he's a massive cunt but its ok cus we love him <3
Tumblr media
the party need supplies to head into the dungeon, but they don't have money to buy the supplies. laios makes a very insane suggestion: they'll kill and eat monsters inside of the dungeon to sustain themselves! on the first layer they meet a dwarf called senshi who's been eating monsters for years and is basically an expert.
Tumblr media
there's an anime on netflix but it's not finished yet. if you're interested in reading it i can dm you some links! i promise it's really really good
general cws for fantasy violence, fantasy racism, stuff like that

You post a lot about Dungeon Meshi and I was wondering if you'd recommend it and what the plot is? It looks interesting ^-^
Oh definetly!! Dungeon meshi is mayhaps my favourite manga. Not to mention the soon coming anime!! Excited!!!! This is an advertizement essay now.
The start is very lighthearted (minus like the starting premise being that the protag's sister gets eaten by the dragon and that's why they have to rush back down to the dungeon to save her since resurrection is a thing) but it will get uhm. It will go to places. And on their way back to the lower levels of the dungeon they will cook various meals of monsters that they come across (since they didn't have time to get new resources)! That's where the manga's name comes from. (haha going in for funny monster food comedy oh oops THAT'S KIND OF A LOT GOING ON HUH)
So what I've gathered so far, I've seen many turn down reading by just seeing Laios and being like "oh boring protag man" but nope. He's a living monster encylopedia and yearns for info about the monsters all the way to their taste. He can imitate a dog perfectly. He thought a man who hated him was his best friend. I love him so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marcille first seems very soft uwu babey but no, we casually learn that she knows magic like,, actual necromancy. Not just resurrection. :) and she's actually quite unhinged. Also she's girl best friends with Falin (the sister of Laios I mentioned earlier) and wants to save her very much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chilchuck is there to just do his work but gets attached to rest of the party. Also the fact that he's a half-foot and other races tend to mistake him for tall-man child when he's actually almost 29, has 3 children and his wife left him. Epic divorce man.
(for comparison half-foot live to be around 50 when elves can live to hundreds and this is important plot wise later on but would also be a spoiler so)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Senshi is the "parent" of the group helping rest of the party to go to lower levels + is mainly the one teaching them about cooking (also we learn through his backstory that there's an extremely heart wrenching reason why he feels the need to keep everyone fed) He's also the fanservice of the series and the only character we've seen pantyshots of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Izutsumi joins the party way later and she has a cat soul bound with her own and she wants to break the curse that made this so. However later on we get hints that she's becoming more okay with having two souls. Also she's. A cat girl. Like not the usual depiction of just having ears and tail, her behaviours are very affected by the second soul.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Izutsumi sensing a ghostie:
Tumblr media
Falin is Laios' sister and very loved and to describe her,, she would show you a cool bug she found. I can't tell too much about her without spoiling major plot points :-)
Tumblr media
Oops my hand slipped.
Tumblr media
+++ Ryoko Kui's art is very distinct in itself, her character design is pretty much always mentioned when talking about dunmeshi!! And the world building!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also people are being horny over the winged lion..,,
Tumblr media
This is not only my blog's desktop version's background but also my actual desktop image (tinified for tumblr):

Heartwarming moments ;_;
+ special mention to characters I didn't even mention but you get to meet by reading!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I might really like this series.
Tumblr media
Bonus, this super cute comic set in our world from the mangaka's blog (izutsumi is a picky eater):

seeing u rb lots of dunmeshi. do you have any dunmeshi thoughts
i actually started reblogging stuff from it before i'd ever read it just because it was all over my dash and it looked neat by itself (and also people kept mentioning "hey this is just like the thing you wrote" so i got shown a lot of it anyway lol). started reading it a couple weeks ago even though i've had a bunch of the major spoilers revealed just via dashboard osmosis, and it's really good so far. haven't watched the anime yet. (also at random i read some later chapters too, i think the ones with the dumplings and the stuff after)
thoughts:
contains my exact brand of pedantry and wondering how exactly some classic rpg mechanics work except for once when you actually stop and dig into it it's not stupid and in fact very good and has something to say besides "durr hurr look at me i'm so clever for thinking about videoed game!" on paper this series is everything i'd hate but it really does go to show execution is everything.
also love to read something where i have trouble picking out a favourite character. might be chilchuck? everyone's great though. i'll probably change my mind next week again
i feel like people overstate how present falin/marcille is and are gonna wind up setting other people up for disappointment if they try and market it like that
and related people are reluctant to engage with the fact that she's there to do fucked up forbidden magic that's what she's there for! it wasn't a desperation move that's why she's in the dungeon! let her commit crimes against nature for HER own satisfaction GOSH
i fucking love making Food Mistakes and it got me back into cooking. i've made so much goddamn stew since i started reading. too intimidated to try anything with dough for now. botw and trails in the sky did this to me as well, just started cooking stuff irl every time i unlocked an in-game recipe
good so far and from what i know about it i expect it to stay that way.
