Glorified G- Chapter 17
A/N I’m really sorry but the case in the next few chapters is pretty grim, I’ll try to keep the gore to a minimum, this is just a heads up. I hope you enjoy- feel free to ask me anything :)
The following morning Joanne awoke to an unfamiliar warmth and the strange feeling of a strong arm around her waist, she thought back to last night for a moment remembering her and Eddie deciding on sharing the bed, she blushed and tried to wriggle out of his embrace, but as she moved his arm tightened around her and she felt his head nuzzle into her shoulder she turned her head to look and saw the curly mass of hair belonging to Eddie. She yawned and stretched her legs out, she lightly took Eddie’s hand and removed it from around her, she looked at her clock - shit she was gonna be late for work - She quickly got dressed for work throwing her hair in a ponytail, she grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled a note for Eddie:
Morning Ed,
Sorry to have disappeared on you, I woke up late for work and you looked really peaceful and I didn’t want to disturb you. Feel free to help yourself to food and drinks, thank you for last night, and for being you. I’ll see you later, don’t feel like you need to rush out, make yourself at home. Here’s a key to lock up.
See you :)
She grabbed her gun and badge and drove as quick as was possible to get to the office. When she got to the office she was quick to immerse herself in work, a couple of tourists had disappeared and were last seen by a bus driver who had seen them with another couple a week ago. Joanne read over the files when her desk phone rang,
“Agent Taylor,” She answered,
“Hello, I’m a dispatcher and I’ve got a robbery in progress, your office is the closest to it so can I ask you and a few other agents to go to it. It’s a block south, the police will be too late so I need you to get there asap.” The dispatcher told her the location, and the details so Joanne, Eleanor and one other agent who she believed was called Aaron made their way to the shop. Upon arrival, the group spotted a couple, armed with guns and knives. Joanne sighed, Eleanor stepped out of the vehicle first and pointed her gun at the pair,
“FBI. Drop your weapons and put your hands on your head.” Surprisingly the couple complied and dropped their guns and turned around with their hands raised, Joanne and Aaron rushed forward and placed the handcuffs on the two, Joanne read them their Miranda rights. The couple were taken into custody and questioning when Joanne was questioning the wife she noticed she had a ring around her neck on a chain,
“That’s a lovely ring, where did you get it?” They wife twiddled the ring in between her fingers,
“I got it from a friend,” Joanne nodded, “so what do you want from me?” Joanne was slightly taken aback by the woman’s bluntness,
“Well Erika, you have been arrested for armed robbery, and we have a witness that saw you with a couple who are now missing- So I was wondering if you could help us, do you recognise these two people?” Joanne asked pushing the photographs of Joshua Ford and Geney Crutchley forwards, Erika glanced at them and Joanne noticed the fear that registered when she saw Geney’s left hand, the ring that was around Erika’s neck had been on Geney’s ring finger,
“Can’t say I know em’.” She said, Joanne gave her a smile before replying,
“So if you don’t know the couple you won’t mind that we have a warrant to search your hotel room, if you co-operate now we can get you a reduced sentence should foul play have occurred.” Joanne watched as Erika pondered it for a few moments,
“You can’t search our room, you don’t have any reason to suspect us for anything.” She said with a hint of cockiness in her voice,
“Well you see Erika, we have reason to suspect you. The ring you are wearing on your necklace is exactly the same as the ring on Geney’s hand, see the dragon that goes around the ring, I looked into it- it’s a one of a kind design.” She bluffed, but she knew could read Erika like a book, if she played into Erika’s fear of being caught she could get Erika to turn on Benjamin, her husband who was being interviewed next door by Eleanor.
The search warrant for the hotel room was quickly granted, and a group of agents went to search the hotel room- Eleanor and Joanne were ordered to stay with the suspects in the interview rooms and feedback to the search team with any useful information, the team called Joanne informing her that there were polaroids of the couples together and that there was one polaroid of Erika with a dragon tattoo on her abdomen, and there were bullet holes in the walls,
So Erika, the team have found some pretty damning evidence in your hotel room, forensics are working on analysing some bullet holes in the walls of the bathroom, do you know anything about that? If you can tell us and help the judge will give you a shorter sentence.” The forensic team were analysing the bullet holes, and they had found a slug in the wall, which could be compared to the guns that the couple had during their armed robbery. Joanne just had to try and get a confession or a hint as to the location of the missing couple, she had been optimistic that the couple were still alive, however now there had been bullet holes in the walls the chances of a positive outcome had been dramatically reduced.
Hours passed in the interview room and Joanne was losing her patience, she had played on Erika’s fear but the woman was loyal to her husband. She had shed her blazer and re-tied her hair several times, she wanted to go home and curl up into a ball this case was exhausting. She had taken a break from interviewing Erika to let her sweat it out for a few moments, just as she was finishing her mug of coffee her desk phone rang, she jumped at it,
“Taylor!” She answered a little too enthusiastically,
“Hi, it’s Meg from forensics- the bullet found in the wall match Erika’s pistol, and the other holes in the walls match the shape and size of the slugs from Erika’s gun. Currently, my team and I are using UV lighting and scanning the rooms from top to bottom, if Geney and Joshua were here, we will know.” Joanne smiled, thankful for something she could use against Erika,
“Thank you, Meg, keep me updated.” She hung up and returned to the interview room disguising the smug grin she had, taking her seat she glanced at Erika and noticed her tapping her fingers on the metal table, she was bored. Joanne couldn’t believe that the woman sitting across from her was bored.
“Erika. We know you fired your gun in the hotel room, forensics are looking for blood now- and when they find it you will go away for life, you need to tell me what you know about Joshua Ford and Martha-  I mean Geney Crutchley.” Geney was Martha’s nickname so if Erika knew her she knew her by Geney. “Benjamin is in the next room with my colleague and he is this close-” Joanne said holding her fingers extremely close together, “to pinning everything that went down on you. He said the robbery was your idea- is that true?” Erika began shaking her head,
“You’re lying! He wouldn’t! He made me do the robbery!” She ran a hand through her hair, Joanne nodded to her and told her to explain everything, finally she caved, “He dismembered them, and we took their bodies to Oregon and dumped them in several garbage cans around the state- you won’t be able to find them now- It’s too late. I want my lawyer now.” Joanne felt a chill run down her spine, she checked her watch and left the interview room to gain some composure- how can people be so brutal, a motiveless crime- the couples didn’t know each other, she could hardly begin to imagine the horrors that happened in that hotel room- she began to dread the forensic report.
She got herself a glass of water and began heading back to the room when the director called her and told her to stand down, there wasn’t more they could do- Oregon had officers searching in bins and at garbage disposal sites, forensics wouldn’t get back to them until the morning and Erika refused to talk without a lawyer, Benjamin was also demanding a lawyer- however it was getting late and they were allowed to be held in custody for thirty-six hours before being charged with murder, which would give the team time to gather evidence- but for now they all needed to go home and rest and come back tomorrow ready to work.
Joanne got in her car and began searching in her bag for her house keys,
“Where the everloving fuck are the little shits!” The case had stressed her out and she could not be bothered to deal with missing keys too, she decided to drive home and see if she had left them in the door when she locked up this morning, as she drove she remembered giving them to Eddie- she relaxed before realising she didn’t know where he lived to get them back, “Shitty little shits!” She cursed, she pulled up outside her apartment and pulled out her mobile before looking up and seeing her kitchen light was on, in a moment of panic she thought that Eddie must’ve left them under something and some petty thief found them and decided to clear her apartment, without thinking she got out of the car her bag was on her shoulder- handcuffs inside, she tapped her gun which was on her left hip- a subconscious habit she had developed since being forced to carry a gun, tapping to make sure it was there was a way to draw it quicker should she need to. Silently she made her way towards the door, she moved quickly up the stairs- careful to keep close to the wall to keep an element of surprise for the unknown subject or unsub. Joanne drew her gun as she heard some clattering in her apartment, as she approached the door she paused listening to hear how many people were inside she could hear one pair of feet, and possibly four different voices, shit five against one - calm, calm, you are armed- fuck they could be too- call it in? No, it’d take too long for backup- grow a pair and go in! You are trained, they are most likely not- Okay Jo you can do this. She twisted the black doorknob slowly, the door was unlocked, slowly she edged the door open peeping her head through to see the unsubs, they weren’t in sight- Fuck it would be harder to sneak in without knowing their location. Quickly Joanne crouched down and snuck into her apartment, she heard footsteps and without thinking she sprung into action, standing straight with her gun aimed.
“FBI. Freeze.” She ordered, the person in front of her wore a black baseball cap and a corduroy jacket, slowly they turned around, “put your hands where I can see them.” The person raised their hands, when Joanne got a look at their face she holstered her gun and relaxed, “Jesus fucking Christ on a crutch! Eddie what the fuck- I literally shit myself!” Eddie looked to the floor sheepishly,
“Sorry- I should’a called to let you know I’d still be here, I mean I haven’t been here all day- the guys and I went to the studio for a bit then I decided we should come back here for a bit because I didn’t wanna leave the key somewhere outside, I’m so sorry Jo- are you okay?” He explained, after hearing the commotion the other four had appeared in the kitchen, Joanne didn’t know how long they had been stood there,
“Fuck me that was intense, I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of you, Jo.” Stone remarked, Joanne shrugged it off before replying to Eddie,
“It’s okay don’t worry- have you guys eaten? I can make something really quick. I’m okay knowing my house wasn’t robbed, but I’m not okay about the case I’m working- It’s fucking bad.” The guys all said they hadn’t eaten so Joanne began making a lasagne- her grandma’s recipe of course, everyone returned the living room while Eddie remained in the kitchen offering to help cook, “Eddie, I’ve got this just sit down or join the others- trust me I’m not gonna burn the house down.” She laughed, “Oh and thank you for yesterday, I appreciate it.” Eddie didn’t reply so she turned to look at him, he didn’t speak for a few moments,
“Jo, you have like a superpower because of your job, you can tell when I’m not okay and whether I like it or not I can’t hide my emotions from you, so when you didn’t answer your phone I knew something was wrong- and I um, didn’t want you to feel like there wasn’t someone there for you. Because I am here for you no matter what, remember when I said you can vent about work, you can. So if it’s been bad, talk to me- nothing’s worse than bottling shit up.” She didn’t reply, instead the two made eye contact, everything she didn’t say was said in that stare- Eddie’s blue eyes were met by her warm green ones and in the moment he stared into them he noticed that they had a few specks of brown, like freckles, in amongst the green- he knew she was thanking him before she turned back to the sauce she was making for the lasagne.
The six managed to squeeze around Joanne’s small dining table that was designed for four, maybe five at a push. The lasagne was incredible and it caused Mike to question whether she was part Italian, they had moved into the living room where there wasn’t enough room on the sofa for all six so Joanne had ended up grabbing a dining chair and placing it next to the sofa, Eddie had insisted on letting her take the sofa- which she reluctantly did, she didn’t think she could bear to sit on another uncomfortable chair after spending practically all day in an interview room on a hard, heavy, wooden chair. After hours of random chat the guys decided to leave, Joanne was going to do the dishes and head to bed, Eddie had offered to stay behind to help her tidy up- normally she would’ve refused, but she was so exhausted and wouldn’t have time in the morning to do it that she accepted his help.
Once the washing was done and the apartment was tidy again Eddie put his jacket on and headed to the door,
“Thank you again, Eddie, for everything.” Joanne said as he pulled her into a quick hug, once they stepped apart they found themselves staring at each other for a few moments, Joanne found herself looking at Eddie’s lips- she quickly averted her gaze to his eyes only to see they were staring at her lips, she let out a yawn and took a step back, “Well goodnight Eddie, I think I could fall asleep standing up if I’m honest with you- I’ll see ya at some point.” She smiled, he returned the grin,
“G’night, I’ll call you tomorrow.”
