I just remember reading somewhere that Sephiroth uses one bottle of conditioner on his hair a day
oh yeah, that's a trivia in Crisis Core.
in Crisis Core, Zack (that you play the whole game) can join the fanclub of the 3 most popular SOLDIERS, Angeal, Genesis (who has two fanclubs because god forbid we don't put extra focus on Gackt's self insert), and Sephiroth.
(Zack eventually get his own fanclub during the game also)
anyway if you manage to join Sephiroth's fanclub (you need to answer some trivia about him to get recruited), you will regularly get mails that are trivia about Sephiroth.
In those mails, you learn that Sephiroth spends a whole bottle of conditioner a day on his hair, indeed.
Note also that it's heavily implied that Hojo is the headmaster of the Fanclub and that he's the one offering those information to the public (while hiding his identity, mind you). So we're talking about Sephiroth's birthfather and the man who raised him into a weapon.
So what i'm saying is that Hojo was the original parent-vlogger that made his child's life miserable by reporting everything he does. (That, and all the ways Hojo made Sephiroth's life worse.) Crisis Core was warning us about this type of parenting since 2007.
And that's my hot take.
But yeah, so, point is, it's a canon fact and something you learn in game while playing Crisis Core, it's not even just an info from a guidebook or anything, no, you like, wander around as Zack, gets an email, wonder if it's going to be something important, and then it's just "Sephiroth use one bottle of conditioner a day". Crisis Core is such a funny game.

friend im only asking because im desperate, do you know where i can watch advent children?
this is so fair, yeah
here's a link to the Japanese version + English Subs, and here's the English dub version.
I checked, the links are the "Complete" version (aka the remaster from 2009 with supplementary scenes)
btw if you're on for a bing i should also recommend Last Order (the ~25mins OAV released in 2005 with Advent Children to explain the Zack situation before Crisis Core got into development (so also it's not really canon and it takes liberties but it's a fun watch))
and once you're done with Advent Children if you want to understand more about Denzel i recommend the OAV "On the way to a smile" that you can watch here.
(and then next one in the timeline is Dirge of Cerberus if you want to check it out)
have fun friend 馃

FF VII VAs: refuse to take a firm stance in the ship wars (Aerith's English VA said that everyone's HCs are equally valid, so there's no need to fight) and now Cloud's is saying that just focusing on one relationship between two people and needing that to be romantic is a detriment to the entire character you claim to love
And the fandom can't handle it lmao
How dare people not be in unquestioning support of their personal ship
Anyway, you go Mr Christian
And they're all right about it, i'd love to say it's wild the fandom can't accept it, but i've been seeing this bullshit for so long now that i'm not even surprised.
Like neither are even telling you to stop shipping charas, they're just telling you to see the big picture and to not undermine the others relationship (esp any platonic ones) just to prompt up the romantic ones.
it's a perfectly reasonable stance to take, it's fucking wild that it's so hard for people to grasp it.
But that's this stupid shipwar for you. It never stopped and the remake coming out made the whole thing even worse </3 breaks my heart dude.
but i'm at least glad the VAs are standing their ground here because again, they're right, come on

What's so bad about Sephiroth reading a book?
the tldr, that's how he became a villain
the longer story is that Sephiroth was actually sort of nice and all in the past, but quite lonely, as he's mostly been raised in the Shinra's labs and only been told his mother's name was Jenova. He was also pretty isolated from others and stuff like that (but Crisis Core will tell you he used to have friends who all were pushed to madness because of experiments being made on them, and there was a slight rift between him and Zack after one of his friend and Zack's mentor ended up dying due to this madness)
Anyway and then one day while Sephiroth was dispatched to investigate the Nibelheim's Reactor, (Nibelheim being Cloud and Tifa's hometown), in there Sephiroth found out that Shinra used to make monsters by using Jenova Cells. Jenova was a being who was locked into a test tube in the Mako Reactor, and the monsters made from her cells were all meant to create a perfect human soldier.
Jenova is a calamity creature that fell from the skies centuries ago, but Shinra didn't really know that and thought she was a Cetra, one of the beings who naturally have a deep connection to the planet, and the Cetra being almost extincts, they really wanted to imitate their genes.
When Sephiroth starts to connect dots, he isolates himself in the basement of the Nibelheim mansions and reads every single books he finds there, which actually were records about the various Jenova experiments.
He didn't sleep for 3 days and 3 nights, reading everything.
... and then on the 3rd day, he set Nibelheim on fire and slaughtered (almost) everyone in there.
Because now he connected all of the dots: his mother was obviously the same Jenova creature, and she's been abused by the scientists, and now it's time for her to take revenge on the planet for what the humans has done to her, and Sephiroth, the superior being, will destroy this planet for Jenova.
He was only stopped then by [well depends if i gaslight you like the OG does or tell you the truth] who threw him in the Mako reactor, the lifeblood of the planet.
those events all happen before the Original Game, so when Sephiroth comes back in the OG, it's still because he's trying to recover Jenova's body that Shinra had taken away from him, in order to put his plan back in motion.
... so basically if Sephiroth didn't lock himself in that library and read all the books about the experiments, he wouldn't have turned mad.
so yeah, Sephiroth, DONT.

hii!! I was wondering, do you have any headcanons for FFVII? I'd love to hear them 馃┓
hi!!
I do have a lot of hc but i haven't thought about any of them in forever. I have some shipping hcs in general for clack/aerti/asg somewhere on my blog i think.
depends also on which type of hc as in like, "stuff i hc the character feels in canon" or "what if" hcs
On more general headcanons that i can think of... (and it's going to be very OG/CC/AC centric) (there will also be major spoilers)
-You can buy a villa in the Costa Del Sol. I like to imagine that the whole Avalanche crew goes there to recharge every once in a while, even after the events of the OG. Each of them have their specific room to rest up. After Aerith's death they left her room as it is and turned it more in a memorial. Once in a while they come back to put flowers in it. Cloud and Tifa have the hardest time coming back into the room for the longest time.
-It's such a trope from the Old Days but i love the idea of Cloud learning some mechanic knowledge from Cid. Like he'd need something to focus his mind on to forget the horrors and Cid would give him some tips while they work on cars or bike together. That way, Cloud customized Fenrir fully thanks to everything Cid taught him. I feel like he would have his own garage in the back of the new Seventh Heaven, but once in a while he'd drop by Cid just to work on some things together. And when they do work they don't really talk much which really help Cloud out.
-In one of the post-canon book, Vincent and Nanaki make each other a promise that, due to Vincent's immortality and Nanaki's lifespan being much longer than anyone else in the cast, they will meet every year when everyone is gone and it's only the two of them remaining, that way they can remember the old days. It's not really a HC but this is something i hold very, very dear to my heart. I like to imagine the two of them constantly coming back to the places they used to go to, Vincent being made emotionally unstable by the amount of loss he went through but Nanaki being a rock to be able to support him through it as they try to make those grieving memories good memories. It means everything to me.
-The remake more or less confirmed it but i love the idea of Barret being genuinely invested in the planet on a academical level. Like he actually read everything he could find to figure out why things went wrong in Corel and how to stop it from happening again elsewhere.
-Also liking to think about the time Tifa and Barret met each other. Nibelheim and Corel's tragedies happened around the same time and i could imagine the two of them meeting before they even reached Midgar, while they're still both major messes from what happened. They would bond easily over their shared trauma and i feel like, both of them working together to raise Marlene was the major motivation for the two of them to sort themselves back together, because even if they're miserable, they need to give Marlene the best of the best. I kinda see Barret and Tifa's friendship like Edgin and Holga from the D&D movie, if that rings any bell. I also think they're each other's rocks more than anything else. Like they may have lost everything again with the Sector 7's collapse, but they have each other so they can get through it. If either of them had died i feel like neither would have managed to move forward from it, regardless of if Cloud and/or Marlene were motivator for them to hold it together.
-I imagine the girls (Aerith, Tifa and Yuffie) would regularly take time off from the group just to have "girl time" together. Aerith would joke like once about how Cloud could join them for having been an honorary girl and Yuffie tries to get all the details and it's Tifa who had to hold the conversation back. Aerith would clarify it's then just a joke and they'd have fun together in town. Post Game, Tifa and Yuffie still see each other and have fun together, but thinking about the old times too much really sour the mood.
-When Reeve is running on 5 all nighters post-game when he's busy trying to organize WRO, he casually slips into himself having a very thick scottish accent. If he does so in front of any Avalanche members they mostly give him a look and don't comment on it, but Yuffie would totally make fun of him for going back to his kitty's habits. Cloud eventually drops a bad "he can do whatever he wants, he knows the cat is out of the bag" pun once and Reeve now just tries really hard not to slip again.
-Speaking of Reeve, based on On Your Way To A Smile - Denzel episode, i think Reeve would drop by regularly at the new Seventh Heaven just to chat up with Denzel, and by extension with Marlene. His mother died to take care of Denzel all while she was talking about how her son didn't have time for her anymore, so i feel like Reeve would therefore try to be there for Denzel to make it up to his mother on that level. I feel like he'd be awkward around Marlene at first considering what he has done, but she wouldn't leave Denzel alone so he had to get used to it.
-Not /my/ headcanons per se but i'm obsessed with a fanart i once saw of Zack as a child holding a toad in his hands, knowing that around Gongaga is where you meet the toads who can change you into one. I like to think Zack used to get into all sort of troubles training to be a hero when he was a child that he'd often come back home with toads in his hands. His parents would have to gently tell him to please stop picking up dangerous toads every few days, but he always gets so excited he forgets about it. Also i like to HC that the fact Zack never gets affected by the toad debuff isn't just because of CC's limitations but just because he's from Gongaga so he's Just Like That. too used to frog to be debuffed.
-Also definitely thinking that it's failing to save Zack that had Tseng being even harder on the rules by the time of the OG. He softened a lot around Zack and he put his own job on the line to try to save him and he couldn't, and i truly think it's what hardened him as badly as he does in the OG.
-HCish? but i think Sephiroth really wanted to be Zack's friend in the way back. Like Angeal would always be complaining about him but with clear affection in his voice that Sephiroth would really want to get to know Zack, but he would be awkward at first except when training him. Like Zack is the "normal" friend of the group. When Angeal and Genesis left i feel like Sephiroth wanted to rely on Zack more, but after he passed on to Zack the mission Angeal ended up dying in, Zack just couldn't take Sephiroth's way to show attempts at friendships. Like he knew it's not something he could hold against Sephiroth but it's something Zack was bitter enough about that he set distances with Sephiroth at the time. And that is why he didn't pick up any of the cues Sephiroth was going mad in Nibelheim because he was still reeling from what happened to Angeal.
-Also linked to that i like to imagine Sephiroth as some sort of spite added to all the other reasons about the way Cloud took over Zack's sword and stuff, and it's why he broke him the way he did as well (like, on top of just regular Cloud obsession reasons). esp since Zack's sword was also Angeal's, i feel like this would add so much spite to everything Cloud is doing.
-Also thinking indulging Yuffie when she was sending him emails to trick him is probably what got Zack to really understand the weight of his actions with Wutai, and that he let her ask him more and more outstanding things mostly because the guilt was taking him over. I read a fic about it once and it still hasn't left my mind.
-Still on the Zack train but i think about the months in the run Zack and Cloud had to be in and think about how Zack probably was really damaging his health by really trying to be hypervigilent and careful about Cloud. Like he'd make sure to have Cloud sleep between him and his sword, and he himself would be half awake most of the time to be hyperaware of his surroundings. Or when looking for food, Zack would ration his parts to make sure Cloud himself get to eat something, even though Cloud is barely responding. So not really in the healthiest state of being.
-Random? but i like to think Kunsel has a big facial scar under his helmet and it's why he's never seen without it (what? could it be because of CC's limited graphisms? perish the thought, obviously--)
-When Angeal disappeared, Zack tried to take care of his plants for a while, but failed pretty hard, not having a green hand at all. He tried to get tips from Aerith but he was totally hopeless. Eventually he brought Angeal's plants to Aerith and she took care of it herself.
that's all that's coming to my mind right now but i know i have more stuff. just nothing comes to mind right now.
Hope it was a fun read! ;) take care!

It's always so funny to me when people insist there's no politics in their favorite media, like, sweetheart
There's no politics in "ecoterrorists are good and the megacorporation slowly killing the planet is bad"?
Sorry, it's just so baffling
These days it's really a nightmare, people are just really unable to understand the politics of things they used to grow up with.
ff7 is the most baffling one to me, the fact i see people being like "since when are there politics in ff7" and it's like. Since the first 10mins of the game released in 1997? what the fuck did you think we were blowing up reactor for.
It's just particularly baffling to me to see this discourse again with Rebirth coming out (tho that wasnt the point of that post's tags), and it's just????
At the end of the day it's a lot of people who don't realize that their childhood's favorite medias were already political and they cannot conceive that their interpretations of them were wrong. They refuse to believe there's been politics in the past and believe therefore everything is all new and bad and meant specifically to harm them.
it's so annoying man.
anyway as parting words:

*connecting the dots* So
What about Zack and Cloud helping each other in and out of their armor, I'm gonna call it for the sake of simplicity
the irony is that i don't even need to "imagine" it because it did happen.
When they were on the run and Cloud was in a vegetative state, Zack had to take care of him, and one of the first things he did was to replace Cloud's infantry armor and put a First Class Soldier's outfit on him because it was the only thing he could find to swap his clothes to. He had to do it because Cloud's initial armor was imbued with mako (so something that would poison him), but still Zack took the time to praise Cloud and tell him this outfit was fitting him so well, even though Cloud could never reply to him.
Zack worked so hard to take care of Cloud during the months that followed their escape and with that in mind it's clear to me that he had done everything he could to keep Cloud clean and safe and alive in any way possible.
But maybe it doesn't really count since Cloud was not really in a state to process all of this, though the pain of an intimacy that only exists for the sake of taking care of Cloud is just... oh the pain of it all.
But if we go back to the trope straight up, even there it's just... like, pre-incident:
I could imagine Cloud just being insecure about himself and maybe stumble on his armor, and Zack will cheerfully propose to help him. Cloud would find this awkward, especially since Zack is technically higher than him on the Shinra's hierarchy, and it would be weird to ask your Superior for help, but Zack just sees his buddy in need of help so he would help out right away. He'd diffuse the awkwardness by joking he would mess up his armor all the time when he just joined in and his friend Kunsel always had to lecture him about it, but Zack mentions it's just a skill that you pick up and will encourage Cloud saying that he'll get used to it, since he keeps getting better and better and will likely rise up in the hierarchy in no time. which would all fluster Cloud a lot.
And with Zack being as forgetful as he can be when he's in a hurry, i could imagine him running up to a training sessions once with his equipment barely holding on into places, especially in the back, and Cloud is a bit awkward pointing it out but once he does Zack just laugh that, see, he too struggle once in a while and Cloud would be embarrassed but touched at the same time, so he'd get bold and offer his help, that Zack is really easy to accept all while smiling big because "told you so, that you'll get it in no time"
And while when Zack was doing it Cloud could barely even look at him, when Cloud does it Zack just looks at him softly seeing how much Cloud is still gaining confidence to point those things out and all of that.
... so now i think im feeling unwell thinking about all of this thanks anon!

don't worry, this isn't offensive. in fact, this isn't offensive enough. Start cursing.
don't let that inexpressive face fool you, it's the devil and you will never feel safe ever again once you fought one--
Tumblr media
this bitch is called a Tonberry, and it's a nightmare.
don't let the fact it's small and slow fool you. if you let him too close, he will kill you in one piercing attack. he also has attacks to freeze you completely so you have to watch as it moves to you with his knife to kill you. And sometimes if you attack him, he will counter immediately, and, you guessed it, also kill you in one swift knife move. and you think taking your distances will help? Perish the thought. He will disappear to reappear right behind you and, you guessed it, kill you in one swift knife move.
It's a nightmare to fight those. I still have mental scars from having to fight a pack of them ambushing you in the darkness of a small cave when i first played Crisis Core when i was a wee teen who just seriously started to play video games. (because while the OG and the Remake have you fight this bitch *as a group*, in Crisis Core it's just Zack and his gacha mechanism against the world. being ganged up by those? Probably a worse fate than what Zack actually went through. This is my take.)
It's really the type of things that you have to play to believe. Any FF players will tell you "oh fuck this". This is our curse and burden. Sephiroth? Jenova? nothing next to those. You don't understand. You DONT U-- *icha gets carried away to calm her down*
ok im back. sorry about that. *coughs* so yeah! this bitch. Start cursing.

i have not played ff7 ever but i cant deny that sephiroth is damn fine. i dont have a type i swear. its totally not near shirtless pretty boys with issues that want to destroy the world. i repeat i DONT have a type---
this is SO valid, truly.
(sounds like a type to me but shhh i won't tell a thing, your secret is well kept with me)
Like yeah of course he has issues, but he's Hot and i think we're all allowed to be super unwise about him. I mean look at him. So yes the man has committed atrocities but he was pretty doing them and that makes it okay.
Since you don't know ff7 much this gives me the perfect opportunity to mention: did you know that the Square Enix's Office have a life-sized naked Sephiroth statue in the floor of its store

What do you MEAN Cloud, paragon of mental health that he is, would have mental health problems? That he'd be mentally unstable??? I never would have gue-
Yeah, the remake doesn't understand the meaning of subtly building up to something
DLFKJDFLKJDFKL how dare the most mentally unstable guy in the world be mentally unstable. hey there.
but yeah it's. man.
Like does it make sense Cloud would be triggered by seeing the experimentation tub? yes. did you need to show us flashes of Cloud in the experimentation tub to drive this point home? doubtful. The fact it comes from a completely new plotline also? means that you're therefore flashing to a plotpoint that gets revealed late in the OG early on as explicitly as possible.
like yeah Cloud has a lot of triggers and all but the OG doesnt make them extremely explicit, while also having Cloud react badly to them. It's really a "what the fuck is wrong with Cloud" we don't really have details on.
And it just doesn't help that Cloud's flashes aren't super subtle. Like, when he goes with Barret and Tifa to get Aerith's back, they discuss the ancients, and... look:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the remake:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(barret explains what he knows of the Ancients (i have no problem with that))
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just the flash is also different than just white text on black screen. the OG is really sparce about showing Sephiroth, and you don't actually see him until Cloud's retelling of how the Nibelheim incident went - before that, any mentions of Sephiroth is made in this very ominous way, without Sephiroth being shown at all.
So you have this black flash, a voice in Cloud's head that makes him pause, here it even brings him to his knees in horror. Cloud is the paragon of mental health ect.
in the remake you see the Sephiroth flash and you see an extended cut of Sephiroth calling out Cloud's deepest insecurities (the fact he keeps failing to save the people he cares about).
and it's stuff like that i find deeply frustrating. I'm good with Cloud having weird behaviors and stuff, again, paragon of mental health, but i feel like the game can get away with so much more HD flair that, ironically, i end up finding them much less ominous.
And that's for the flashes that ARE in the original game. there are flashes that are more obvious (Mako reactor 5 breakdown babyyy), but the OG still pull its cards in a way where it is... disturbing without genuinely giving you a direct visual to associate with that.
back to the flashes to the experiment trigger, the thing is that i just, really love this bit of Cloud's story, because he acts nonchalant about the experiment tubes in the game, and it's only after he remembers that if you bring him back to an experiment tube he will get an extended flashback of what happened to him and everything he knew about Zack. and there's really this weight because you went into this specific room before, you walked near to the tubes, and Cloud didn't react at all. but you come back later on and then it brings Cloud into all sort of triggers and pushes him to look for details he had overlooked in that room that now reminds him of who he used to be.
so introducing his trigger around the experimentation being done early is. well. it's reasonable. Cloud breaks down over a lot of things. But it feels particularly wild to me to see him break down on the one thing he had buried so deeply he wasn't even triggered by in the OG until shit hit the fan and it came in one horrible wave of guilt and grief.
so is it reasonable to add "Cloud's impecable mental health moments"? yeah! obviously!
but. yeah i definitely feel a loss of subtility. is it really because now that we have high graphisms we don't really need to rely on subtle imagery anymore?
it keeps frustrating me and i know i'm walking the line between "i'm just too attached to the old game" and "that's a valid complain" and i'm probably more onto the first one
but it takes me out everytime, because the way the flashes are done feel more like they're winking at the audience because they know what it refers to, than to really have Cloud himself go through something that leaves him with more question about himself than he's comfortable with answering.
BUT YEAH.
honestly this is just my old man yells at cloud (haha) moment.
i just. really need to start taking in the remake's style because at this point i can't expect it to magically use the OG approach anymore. but man.
