How much does security performance vary among Android protection apps? In an endurance test from January to June 2020, the lab at AV-TEST found answers to this question, revealing some surprising results.

14 Android security apps put to an endurance test –

these apps defend mobile Android devices the best

The confidence of private Android users in their system and the installed apps is quite high. Many cyber-gangsters try to exploit this somewhat blind trust using infected apps. Younger users are often targeted in particular. The criminals offer them special, free gaming apps, in which Trojans and other malware samples are often concealed.

The lab at AV-TEST examined 14 Android security apps for consumer users in terms of their protection over a longer period. It is worth pointing out that the lab differentiates between Android security apps for consumers versus those for corporate users. The test examining protection for consumer users, for instance, had more infected gaming apps than business apps unleashed on the devices.

Endurance test shows enduring protection

In a major test from January to June 2020, the lab evaluated 14 Android protection apps under Android 8.0 (Oreo). The test involved the apps from AhnLab, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, F-Secure, G Data, Ikarus, Kaspersky, McAfee, NortonLifeLock, securiON and Trend Micro. For comparison, Google Play Protect was also included in the mix, as it is automatically launched with Google's Play Store on every Android device.

The result shows that there are several good security apps for Android that also guarantee enduring protection in an endurance test. Each app was evaluated in terms of its protection, performance and usability. For each category, the laboratory awards up to 6 points, i.e. a maximum of 18 points. A total of 5 apps managed to achieve this perfect score. They are from Avira, Bitdefender, G Data, NortonLifeLock and Trend Micro. Following close behind with 17.7 points was the Kaspersky app, with 17.5 points the protection tool from securiON, along with the apps from AhnLab and McAfee with 17.3 and 17.1 points respectively. The 4 additional apps from F-Secure, Ikarus, Avast und AVG achieved between 16.8 and 15.4 points. Finishing dead last on the list was Google Play Protect with a mere 6 points.

When Google's detection fails

Already upon downloading apps from the Play Store or launching them later on the Android device, Google Play Protect ought to reliably detect, block and erase infected apps. Sounds good in theory, but it doesn't really work in practice. In the real-time test conducted during the test period from January to June 2020, the lab deployed nearly 10,000 totally freshly-found infected apps. This was followed by the reference set consisting of a total of nearly 10,000 somewhat older and often more well-known infected apps. The Google result is sobering: Throughout the test period, Google Play Protect exhibited an average detection rate of 64.6 percent in the real-time test. The reference set was only detected by up to 45.4 percent. As a reminder: these are the older, mostly more well-known malware apps. In rounded numbers, this means that in the tests, Google Play Protect misses roughly 3,500 to 5,500 apps containing hidden malware.

The fact that it's possible to do a much better job is seen in the apps from Bitdefender, G Data, Kaspersky, NortonLifeLock and Trend Micro. They detected the nearly 20,000 malware apps in both tests without exception: 100 percent. This was followed by the app from Avira, committing a minor error in the real-time test: 99.9 percent, but otherwise 100 percent. The additional apps from AhnLab, F-Secure, Ikarus and McAfee also committed minor errors in detection in one or both tests. But they still attained an excellent score between 100 and 99.8 percent. The remaining apps from AVG, Avast and securiON still achieved scores between 99.9 and 99,1 percent in the tests.

Anyone putting a load on the system will be thrown out

It doesn't matter how good a protection app is: as soon as it starts to slow down the mobile device or heavily drain the battery, it is deleted by the user. That is why the lab examines how heavily the protection apps put a load on the system and battery and whether they use lots of data in the background. The result is favorable: 11 of the 14 apps tested had a clean bill of health in all aspects and received the maximum 6 points awarded by the lab. Only the app from McAfee transmitted quite a lot of data in the background in one instance: this resulted in a mere 5.3 points. The apps from Avast and AVG frequently shuttle too much data in the background: they each received a mere 4.7 points. Google's Play Protect, with a totally clean slate in this category, received 6 points.

Good, bad, or simply undetected?

Naturally, it's not good when a protection apps fails to recognize a malware app. However, it is far more nerve-racking when a protection app constantly flags innocuous programs as alleged malware apps. These false alarms are unnerving to users, which is why they should not occur. In order to test this scenario, the lab installs many harmless apps on the test devices. Throughout the entire test period, this involved over 6,000 innocuous apps from the Play Store and just under 2,500 additional harmless apps from other sources. The result is quite a surprise: In the tests, Play Protect triggered a false alarm nearly 50 times on harmless apps that originated from its own store. Add to this nearly 80 additional false alarms for apps from other sources. That is why in the endurance test, no points were awarded to Google Play Protect in the category of usability.

While other protection apps also had problems with false alarms, their rate of detection was roughly in the range of 3 to 10 false positives. Kaspersky's app did overreact slightly: 5.7 points. AhnLab 5.3 points. The apps from Avast, AVG and F-Secure caused false alarms a few times: 5.0 points. The app from Ikarus often mistakes friend for foe: a mere 4.3 points

The apps from Avira, Bitdefender, G Data, McAfee, NortonLifeLock, securiON and Trend Micro show the competition how it's done: no false alarms, thus the full 6 points.

No one can live on Google alone

Google does try hard with Play Protect, but in terms of security, it is no match for the specialists by a long shot. Play Protect lets every second or third malware app through without taking action, and on the other hand, it often classifies harmless apps as dangerous. That's why the lab recommends deploying a good third-party protection app. The endurance test with 14 security apps offers a wide selection to choose from. The top rankings, scoring 18 points each, were earned by Avira, Bitdefender, G Data, NortonLifeLock and Trend Micro. This makes them worth recommending without reservation.

Following at 17.7 to 17.1 points are the apps from Kaspersky, securiON, AhnLab and McAfee. When only considering the protection aspect, the apps from Kaspersky and AhnLab are also among the frontrunners with 6 points each.

Using an Android for your crypto? Google Play Protect detects only 31% of Android stalkerware

Data reveals that Android’s internal Google Play Protect service detects only 31% of stalkerware threats.

Stalkerware, sometimes known as spyware, is a set of tools (apps or software programs) that allow someone else (such as an abuser) to monitor and record your phone behaviour.

This means that the fraudster can gather all the sensitive information that you type on your phone, like login credentials to your email address, banking applications, or even personal identifying information, like SSNs, home addresses, and so on.

AV-Test, an independent research institute running for more than 15 years, ran a test on the most popular security applications to see which ones perform the best in terms of spyware detections on Android devices. Each security application had to detect 29 unique stalkerware threats. The analysis was carried out in July 2021.

Shockingly, by far, the worst results were from the native Google Play Protect application, as it only detected 9 threats out of 29, which constitutes a success rate of 31%.

One might argue that it is still a decent result, given that the application is free of charge, and comes built-in to all Android devices. Yet, some of the applications evaluated are free of charge as well. The best performers like Bitdefender, Trend Micro, ESET, and Kaspersky charge a small licensing fee, usually around $10 per year for 1 device.

The second-worst result was shown by NortonLifeLock Norton 360 security software. It caught only 17 out of 29 spyware apps, a detection rate of 58.6%.

Next up are three less-known security companies, whose detection rates hover around 70%. These are Line Antivirus (72.4%), Ikarus mobile.security (79.3%), and AhnLab V3 Mobile Security (79.3%).

Now, let’s jump to the other side of the list to look at the best-performing software. Three applications got a perfect score of 100%, which means that they detected all 29 stalkerware threats. At the top of the list, we see Antiy AVL, Bitdefender Mobile Security, and Trend Micro Mobile Security.

Fourth and fifth place goes to ESET Mobile Security and Kaspersky Internet Security for Android. These services failed to detect only a single threat, giving them an almost perfect score of 96.6%.

To sum up the results, the test reveals that a well-known brand name is not necessarily the best choice when it comes to malware protection. In this case, the most popular antivirus software performed the worst.

Android users who depend on the native Google Play Protect service to fight against spyware should consider getting one of the more effective antivirus applications.

Noticing and protecting against stalkerware

On an Android device, there are often early warning indications that something isn't quite right. Examples of abnormalities include unusual battery drain and slower application performance, increased data usage, and interruptions or noises during phone calls.

On the other hand, these are signs that your device is infected, and it will not be helpful to figure out which application actually caused the intrusion. To figure out where the issue lies, you will need to turn to security software.

When you do, make sure that you scan your device with the strictest scan settings possible, as many applications allow you to choose between a “fast” or a “full” scan.

Finally, it is best to avoid any third-party App Stores. Even though Google Play Store or Apple App Store is not guaranteed to have virus-free applications, their security measures are much better than most others on the internet.

tl;dr - consider getting one of the more effective antivirus applications.

Android es un sistema operante muy ponderado y seguro, tal y como ha demostrado Google con decisiones como eliminar el nombre de los postres a partir de Android 10. Este mes encontramos pocos cambios con respecto a lo que veíamos en abril de 2019, con una gran cantidad de antivirus obteniendo las mejores notas posibles en protección y en rendimiento. El único que vuelve a suspender en protección es Google Play Protect, que es el software de protección que Google utiliza en la Play Store para filtrar aplicaciones maliciosas.

Este software se encarga por otra parte supuestamente de analizar que las apps que tengamos instaladas en el móvil sean seguras, pero en la astucia su fiabilidad es nefasta. De hecho, es el único que no recibe la certificación de AV-Test. Para realizar la prueba han utilizado 3.347 muestras de malware, mientras que para la usabilidad han analizado la cantidad de falsas alarmas con 2.342 muestras. Para comprobar el rendimiento han mirado si la app afecta a la peroles, ralentiza el dispositivo, o si genera demasiado tráfico de red.

Entre los que reciben la máxima puntuación (6/6) en las tres categorías de protección, rendimiento y usabilidad encontramos:

Todos los que no obtienen un 6 en todas las puntuaciones han de evitarse

Entre los que no obtienen toda la puntuación encontramos a AhnLab V3 Mobile Security 3.1, que obtiene 5 de 6 en usabilidad, al igual que le pasa a Ikarus mobile.security 1.8 y a Kaspersky Internet Security 11.23. F-Secure SAFE 17.6 es otra opción poco recomendable, ya que obtiene un 5 en protección y un 4 en usabilidad.

Luego de ellos, encontramos tres antivirus que tienen un 4 en diversas categorías. NSHC Droid-X 3.1 obtiene un 4 en protección, al igual que le ocurre a Securion OnAV 1.0. Este postrer por otra parte obtiene un 4 en usabilidad, que es la misma puntuación que Sophos Mobile Security 9.0 obtiene en esa sección.

Por ello, la recomendación está clara: usad sólo los antivirus que aparecen en el primer relación, ya que son los únicos que obtiene 6/6 en las tres categorías. Google Play Protect sólo detectó un 44% del malware, encima de difundir 8 falsos positivos. En el caso de los antivirus que obtuvieron un 4 en protección, como OnAv, la detección de malware fue del 96,3%, con algún que otro simulado positivo. Como consolación, al menos todos los antivirus obtuvieron un 6 en rendimiento, lo que demuestra que no afectan gravemente a la peroles.

You may noticed from my name that I'm a Muslim and it's indeed a problem when I deal with most westeners. They usually step back two three steps, supposedly that I'm another close minded backward or fundamentalist or even a terrorist who would yell "Allah akbar" and blow the keyboard or cellphone in their faces. It takes a lot of effort to explain who I am and how I deal with others.

Years ago I was debating faith on Facebook groups. I debated with atheists, Christians, Jews, and Hindus, and I always used a respectful and decent manner, never preached but tried to explain Islam that i live not Islam that media or stupid fanatics show to them. It wasn't accepted from many of them anyway.

Then I completely stopped when I figured out that it's pointless and it usually bring hate and anger.

One day I met an atheist and he told me something I didn't forget.

He said "Do you think that losing faith is a virus that you catch from the air and you become infected so next day you wake up as an atheist! Absolutely wrong. Faith is something deep inside the person and it takes time to be gone specially from those who had a theist life experience. It takes a lot of situations, contradictions, evidence, unanswered questions to reach the state of giving up"

Well, I don't know that guy and I didn't speak with him again after that day.

I'm still a Muslim and let's close the religion talk completely from this point.

So, why I tell you this all!?

First let me introduce myself from a different point of view.

I'm a straight man, my path is clean and clear. My history is a source of pride to myself and my family with lots of successes and least failures.

I'm known as a quiet, polite, respectful man for colleagues and strangers, and I'm active, funny, talkative as it gets with family and close friends. I sing, dance, create instant funny poems, jokes. I play with ten kids at the same time, telling them stories with cartoon voice, creating attractive games, throwing them in the air and around my arms like a roller coaster.. giving them a quality time of fun and happiness. I'm full of life.

I'm a man of honor. I value my duties and responsibilities more than my dreams and desires. Is it a curse or virtue? I don't care.

I never failed in anything I planned to achieve. NEVER.

I believe in freedom, I value and cherish it, but when it comes to my woman I'm a damn hot blooded man. Really hot blood.

When I'm jealous or angry my blood boils in my veins that I can burn the whole world. If someone tried to annoy my woman I can eat his raw meet.. I can't absorb the idea that my woman spend summer in a bikini while lustful eyes eating her body, or dancing in the arms of another man not me, or spending nights talking to "friends" or whatever.

My passion is wild, my capabilities are limitless. I can learn anything and can do everything.

And, I always yearned to a dream that is out of this world. I yearned for the perfection, the completion.. to create my wings stronger than those of Ikarus and fly fearlessly to the sun.

I had a dream. A 180 degree life changing dream.

And for that dream I sacrificed alot of the above.

I sacrificed from my sanity and happiness and soul. I lost myself, my satisfied eye look and positive smile.

Day after day, month after month, I try and try and fail.

Then try and try again and fail.

Then try harder, and eventually fail.

It was a come/go, yes/no, forever/never kind of a game.

I've been fooled, manipulated, humiliated, ignored, replaced, played with, lied to..

I was an experiment. A treat with expiry date.

The past never died, the present is not mine, so is there any expected future? Nah

Capturing myself in a cage of illusion of my own creation. Collapsing a wall of steel by scratching it with a nail clipper.

Suddenly, I remembered that atheist man talk about faith, when I realized that I'm changing.

Faith is a general word, not must be associated with religion.

I love my dream, it was not a choice, it will not change. It wasn't something I regretted or wanted to free myself from.

But my faith in achieving it is changing. I'm giving up.

I'm watching all the situations, contradictions, and unanswered questions like a flashing light inside my tired mind.

Not everything I want is mine.

Not everything I love suits me.

I don't want to waste my life in riddles and hidden twisted truth.

Myself has a right on me. I must love myself more, like I've been adviced one day.

Perhaps I could find my old "me" once again.
