me laughing at the same jokes i’ve heard 1000 times every time i listen to/watch a recording of phantom
Tumblr media
#and i swear it gets funnier every time!#was dying while listening to an audio today#(it was specifically nehal joshi during the il muto ballet)#(i could not stop laughing and i couldn’t even SEE him it was just his delivery)#(ugh he’s so funny i love him)#poto shitpost#also side note im about to go on a tangent#but my phantom hyperfixation runs so deep and i have so many thoughts about it#i have at least 100 posts in my drafts about it and i’m not exaggerating#they’re mostly silly memes but it’s still like an overload of posts about phantom#and i’m like. insecure about how much i think about it???? and how much of my headspace i dedicate to it????#so i keep the bulk of the memes/random posts in my drafts because i just feel weird about posting so much#i really could post about it 24/7 if i didn’t have to be a Person with Tasks#and idk i think im just hyper-aware of how i present my interests in daily life while offline#i am someone who hyperfixates and obsesses and while i could talk about phantom for years i am terrified of annoying people with my interest#i’m worried about being perceived as weird so i kind of flatten myself to make myself more palatable for others#which has me being insecure about the things i’m passionate about and how deep that passion runs#and these feelings have bled online to the specific space i have created as an outlet for my passion#like it’s my blog i shouldn’t be censoring my love for a thing that brings me joy#but my fear of being othered is like. overtaking me. because there are many things that i can’t change about myself#that categorize me as an ‘other’ (sexuality identity mental health etc)#and this is something i can control. i can control how i portray my personality#so i flatten my personality to compensate for the other (perceived) weird things that can’t be changed#idk i just shouldn’t feel the need to do that here bc pretty much everyone on here is super passionate about something#like obsessive about it#and that’s what i love about this site with all its faults. like this is a space for people to come and Be Weird and Act Strange#and everyone just accepts it#and also the phantom community in general#why should i water down my love for phantom in the one place where people can understand it and relate to it???#hit the tag limit but i’ve come to multiple revelations while typing this lmao

audio doesn't remotely give it justice but, ladies and gentlemen, here's earl carpenter as drunk!andre bursting on stage to announce the ballet after il muto, freezing like a deer in the headlights upon seeing the audience and pleading for the dancers to come in. once they do, while firmin is furiously waving him offstage, he of course collides with a ballerina and nearly falls face first on the ground.

POTO LONDON 16/03/2024 CHUMISA’S 3RD SHOW!! - REVIEW
(Audio will be gifted soon!)
I had booked this trip before Chumisa was announced to be taking over as alternate the day before so I was kicking myself I just missed her first show, I had heard clips of her online and she sounded incredible and lots of people were raving about her.
I went to the show expecting Eve or Colleen to be on as Lily had been off the Thursday and I didn’t think Chumisa would have done 2 shows directly after her debut BUT low and behold her name was on the castboard however I was a little skeptical as there has been a few times where it’s been incorrect.
During the Hannibal ballet Chumisa came out and I was so excited!! She looked gorgeous in the costume and wig! I also got the pleasure of seeing Lily as Carlotta again who was also brilliant, during Carlotta’s think of me Chumisa was in awe of her and just as the cloth was about to drop you could sense that she had sensed the presence of the phantom.
She began think of me and had a lovely vibrato to start off and then she delivered an unbelievable rendition of the song! So elegant in the way she moved in the Elissa skirt and so smiley like her Christine couldn’t believe her luck! Her cadenza was angelic to say the least so floaty and the high note so strong!
Her chemistry with Joe in the dressing room was so so good she played Christine like a total giddy teenager which really worked!
Her title song was lovely she has a great lower register for the beginning and then her cadenza was BEAUTIFUL and really powerful!
Perfect acting in music of the night played Christine with so much curiosity she was just fascinated by the phantom, her facial expressions and again so elegant in the way she moved!
The unmasking again just great acting and she held the note when singing “who’s is that face in the shadows…who’s is that face in the maaaaask” tiny detail that I LOVED
In the rooftop she was not having any of Raoul’s BS she completely stood on her own and almost seemed to be like well if you don’t believe me see ya later!
All I ask of you was brilliant! Again their chemistry was so palpable one of my fave performances I’ve seen of that song!
Masquerade again her little acting choices were so solid it was as if she was searching for the phantom in the crowd! Notes/managers 2 she stood up to Carlotta really strongly and when she got to Twisted every way you could see her Christine totally break down like she had nothing left to give, truly wonderful poignant acting choices!
Her wishing was SOOOO GOOD she relied a little more on her belt which I imagine she’ll get more into the soprano side further into her run but for her 3rd ever show an absolute acting masterclass!
In PONR she was stunning! When she knew it was the phantom it was almost rage coming out in her singing like she was so over his nonsense lol
NOW…..the final lair…..WOW
She was inCREDible!!! Again a lot of belt but it worked so so well for her portrayal of Christine she really held her own here I was blown away! I got that Chumisa rn is more of a Raoul Christine as opposed to Lily who’s the polar opposite so a really lovely change!
Overall for her 3rd show as Christine I see Chumisa being a fan favourite, so much charisma and charm in her Christine and vocally was beautiful and will only get better! All 4 London Christine’s are top of their game we’re truly spoiled!
Costume notes:
- Her wig texture and style was stunning I just wish they’d add a bit more hair to make it a bit fluffier.
- Her Elissa Skirt is like Anouk’s one so no big bow in the back and gold appliqué round the fake bodice.
- Lovely mint bow in her hair for Il muto and I’m not a massive costume buff however her rooftop dress looked different and I can’t pinpoint why?
- Her masquerade dress was slightly better than Lily’s the bodice was perfectly fit and adequately beaded and the skirt had a lovely shape! West end star princess’ are just not my fave tbh!
- Her wishing dress was like the original production ones with the waterfall drape which was interesting I wonder if that will change

Quick Thoughts - The Phantom of the Opera - April 15, 2023 (Evening)
The main trio was Laird Macintosh, Emilie Kouatchou and John Riddle
It’s hard to find a word that accurately conveys the feeling in that theater. It was a mix of love, joy, enthusiasm, sorrow, and grief.
The cast seemed sharper somehow? So many extra little details.
I KNOW, every write up I do, I always go on about how much I love Nehal Joshi’s Andre but the man always delivers.
John Riddle’s Raoul seemed more boyish and charming than my recollection? He had such good chemistry with Emilie.
Raquel cracked on the opening Hannibal cadenza and just immediately redid it. Such a Carlotta move.
She was also somehow funnier and sharper than her baseline? That slow head turn after the line ‘These things do happen!’ was so hysterical.
Despite the numerous times I have seen Phantom, I’ve never seen Emilie opposite a Phantom that wasn’t Ben Crawford. It was very interesting to see Laird and Emilie play off each other.
The main thing I remember from the first lair is how Laird’s phantom threw his fedora into the wings like it was a frisbee.
Oh also just how much despair and shock Laird’s Phantom felt at the first unmasking.
Nehal Joshi somehow makes the speech before the Il Muto ballet funnier every time. This time he tripped over himself in his haste to get down stage. I think what makes this so funny is that as the scene goes on he just gets more and more disheveled.
Emilie’s Wishing was absolutely incredible. It practically stopped the show.
I swear, during the second unmasking, Emilie was going in for a kiss.
The Final Lair was something else.
It was just... so good.
Laird broke the kiss and the look of joy and wonderment on his face afterwards. His right hand was blocking the lower half of his face but I swear that man was smiling.
THE CANDLE WORKED!!!!
OKAY, so the ring return - EMILIE SAID I LOVE YOU BACK
But it was so quiet, it was almost as if we all imagined it, so it made Laird’s second ‘I love you’ so heartbreaking.
Yes, Laird looked out at the audience again in this performance when he was about to cover himself with the cloak. It’s (most likely) the last time for him as it is for us.

I need you all to know that on the Spanish production of The Phantom of the Opera, during the Il Muto ballet, they can't show Erik killing the stagehand due to the way the stage works, so instead, to show you that Erik is doing Erik Shenanigans, they have him swinging from a rope behind the ballet as if he were George of the Jungle. While he laughs mischievously.

Do you have any reference photos or photos of the Las Vegas sylvan glades? I see a few but I can’t find any of the back, or if there’s really any photos of the back of anything similar I’d be super grateful.
Oh, I do (I do I do I do I do, to quote ABBA).
They were in large the same as the general Broadway and US Tour versions, so those would also work as reference photos. I assume the Vegas lot was even mixed into the Broadway lot after Vegas closed. But since you asked, here are some Vegas specific:
Vegas dress on display on stage, and Vegas costumes worn by Amelia Abrahams, Courtney Coumbs and Jordan Ashley:

Vegas dress on display on stage, demonstrated by costume supervisor Sam Fleming:

Reversed skirts revealing the tutu skirt construction and underlayers at the costume maker:

And - admittedly not Las Vegas costumes, but the basically identical versions on Broadway, featuring the back:

Now there are several things I really like about the 2023 Romanian production. Overall, I might even go so far as to say it’s one of the best non-replicas. But this version of the Il Muto ballet… I just want to know what the creative thought process was behind it.

The Phantom of the Opera Broadway Thoughts/Review - April 4, 2023
The main trio was Jeremy Stolle, Julia Udine, John Riddle and it was my first time seeing all three of them in these roles! Unless I win the lottery tomorrow for the final performance this was my last time seeing Phantom on Broadway before it closes and it proved to be the performance I needed to have closure.
Nehal Joshi continues to add something every performance as Andre. During Hannibal, he linked arms with Piangi during a choreography bit and then he went to stand by the elephant to sing like he was a member of the ensemble.
Julia really comes alive during Think of Me it’s obvious that her Christine loves performing once she gets over her initial nervousness.
As the candles rose during the title song, Jeremy was feeling himself and he spun the boat pole in a circle like it was a lightsaber before starting to row again and it was ~ hot ~
When Julia got out of the boat, he grabbed her hips and kind of spun her to look at him and it was also hot. His cape twirl and the way he throws it down onto the bed boat while not breaking eye contact with Christine is also hot. His phantom definitely has some Leo somewhere in his chart he is a slutty showman
I had seen some reviews on here saying that in recent months Jeremy’s voice has sounded strained while playing the Phantom. Vocally he struggled with the “I have brought you” part of MOTN, the end of AIAOY reprise, and “deep as hell” in Down Once More but those were the only parts he had to adjust the notes.
The Phantom and Christine almost kissed while leaning up against the portcullis. Which made the phantom chasing her to that corner of the lair in STYDI feel like a cruel parallel
During I Remember... Julia starts singing while lying down which seemed more realistic.
John’s Raoul is so so so earnest. That’s the best word to describe him. Right before Primadonna when the managers said Christine would play the page boy his head jerked up like “say what?”
When they are scrambling to read the Phantoms note from Madame Giry Firmin dropped the note to the ground
Jeremy’s Phantom really shines while messing with Carlotta he soaks up taunting her and is having a ball stealing the attention away (again there is Leo somewhere in his chart)
During the ballet scene, all of the ballerinas were adding little extra things in their performance while the shadows and murder are happening like adding lines saying “Did you see that?” and playing up the humor and fear.
John’s love language as Raoul is definitely physical touch but before kissing Christine for the first time he seemed so hesitant and nervous even though it was so apparent he wanted to.
During Wishing, it comes across like Julia’s Christine has been compartmentalizing or was in denial about her dad’s death. And her “her father promised her” is very pointed like she’s angry at her dad for dying
In Wandering Child, Jeremy isn’t really paternal he’s more of a patronizing “I know you have daddy issues” and he caressed his face during “far from my fathering gaze.” Julia was actively trying to resist it like physically trying to fight against the trance which I appreciated
John was ready to FIGHT in Wandering Child he charged up to the grave and it seemed like if Julia didn’t stop him he would have climbed up the wall to the Phantom.
An overall note about John… he seems to really pay attention to what the Phantom does. He keeps glancing at the chandelier during Il Muto and he notices the Phantom almost as early as Christine does in Masquerade. And while he’s protective of Christine he seems to be analyzing the Phantom, possibly sizing him up or trying to figure out what he’s going to do next. And I think this works really well in the last half of act II where Raoul is leading the charge because of course he is. He’s like “I’ve been studying this guy I have an idea” which also plays into the earnestness of John’s portrayal.
Jeremy’s vocals I think were strongest during PONR and his character really leans into the horniness of the song. Once Julia realizes it’s him she performed the most over-the-top sexy I’ve seen Christine do but it seemed to be to taunt the phantom. Like fully flashed her entire leg when she put her foot up on the bench.
When the Phantom proposes, Julia gently shook her head with her eyes pleading “please don’t ask that of me” and god it was such a subtle acting moment but it stood out to me so much. And then she ripped off his mask to get him to stfu
Jeremy’s Phantom has a strong attachment to his mask. As soon as he gets it back in STYDI, you can see his whole demeanor change. In the Final Lair, when he sang “A mask my first unfeeling scrape of clothing” he started to cry as if he was truly remembering his first mask. And then he realizes he’s being vulnerable in front of Christine and he gets mad at her pitying him
John is the only Raoul I’ve seen act like he’s being strangled the whole time during the final lair. Some eventually stop struggling but he kept it up the whole time. His energy was just really refreshing.
At one point Julia tried to put her arms around the Phantom’s shoulders to plead with him, and Jeremy ducked out from her (I don’t know how since he’s so much taller)
Jeremy was scaryyyyyy when he leaned over Christine before “you try my patience” and even after he turned around Julia was still frozen terrified. I think that was the first time I’ve ever watched it live and actually felt really really scared for Christine. Her fear was just so palpable.
After the kiss, when the Phantom walks up to Raoul, John started breathing really hard like he thought the Phantom was going to kill him and Julia’s desperate “No!” showed that she thought the same.
Because of how much Julia’s Christine wanted to be free of the Phantom it surprised my how sad her Christine seemed during the ring return. It did seem to be the mostly out of pity though.
There was no second “I love you.” When Jeremy was standing watching Christine and Raoul ride off on the boat together, something about his body language really captured the finality of his loneliness in that moment.
When I saw Phantom in December after so many years away all it did was reawaken my love of the show, and when I saw it in March the performance was so chaotic I was distraught (an understatement) when it ended because I knew I needed to go again. Something about this performance brought a lot of closure and as soon as it ended, I didn’t cry like I did in March. I just felt content.
I think that’s partially because every cast member is just doing the most so there were so many small moments to savor, but I also think it’s because I got to see Jeremy’s Phantom. I met him twice back in 2013/2014 when I was deep in the Phandom and him being so involved with fans was a huge part of my formative love of Phantom in high school. And when I wasn’t following the show as much I still kept up with a lot of backstage stuff through his Instagram. So it felt very full circle to finally catch him as the Phantom.

Phantom of the Opera observations
11/08/22
(Not in order as I’m writing as I remember)
Holly Anne Hull - Christine Daaé
Killian Donnelly - Phantom
Matt Blaker - Raoul de Chagny
Act one
- The wardrobe Mistress (Michelle Cornelius) is my favorite, right before little lotte you can see through the curtain and she was putting on some of The perfume in the dressing room, then she came on stage during the ballet for Il muto and she smiled and waved to the Audience
- Matt and Holly are so sweet!
- Matt does a really cute twirl during AIAOY
- I think Holly said “wee” when she was spun around but I’m not sure
- Andre just continuously saying Ballet even after it’s started
- Meg has a pink shaw now during Notes, Like a light pink one, I have no idea if that’s how it was before or if it’s ever been like that but it’s pink now
- Holly was truly terrified during stranger than you dreamt it, she was tightly curled up and anytime the phantom moved she flinched, when he came even closer she bunched up again
- There was a look on Holly’s face when Raoul said I love you, like she wasn’t really sure what to think about that
Act two
- Raoul looked like he was just gonna let the lasso finish the job when Christine and Erik kissed he looked so distraught
- Megs shaw was cream again and please someone tell me if it has always been pink and I’m just forgetting
- Holly during PONR is a masterpiece, you can tell she is rather nervous yet is still doing her best to continue
- When The phantom began singing Aiaoy Holly’s face darkened and she looked extremely nervous like she realized he’d been listening that night
- Raoul’s “I’m with you” is just 🥺
- Christine didn’t say “I can’t” after Twisted every way and just ran away
- Last year I kinda saw Holly as a two hands Christine, but after this I can definitely see she’s team Raoul
