Alright it's time for physco analyzing owl house characters part 3: Amity
(Spoiler warning for season three again)
Now honestly I don't know why no one talks about this but Amity is so traumatized. Like I would put her next to Hunter and Vee in the c-ptsd category. If you read part 1, you'll remember how I said the degree of trauma in these characters seems to reflect the amount of support each of them had and Amity is a great example of this.
Other than Hunter, she's had the least amount of support of all the hexsquad. Willow has two supportive dads, Gus has his father and friends, and Luz has two moms, a little brother, and eventually adopts Vee and Hunter as siblings too. But before Luz, Amity had no real support in her life. She had an abusive mother, a neglectful father, and two siblings who weren't always that helpful.
Not only that, she was forced into a friend group that was never genuine and relied upon her status and good grades. She was never in control of her life and it seems she was motivated pretty much entirely by fear of failure. I love that in the show we get to see her change so much- once she meets Luz, she decides to start doing things for herself and stand up to people who tell her she can't.
She starts to change her goals, her appearance, her friends, everything to be more what she wants and she starts surrounding herself with people that are better for her. However, despite all that, it's still very clear that her life before was more damaging than she let's on.
She's frequently shown throughout the show being desperately afraid of rejection and failure, even once she was in the human realm. She was the first one to tell her friends they should be helping more and relying on Camila less, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was because Odalia demanded Amity earn any help. Even in the little time we get to see Odalia in the show, it's pretty obvious that she doesn't see her family as people but moreso sees them as products, adverts to further her own success.
In thanks to them, Amity's seen feeling dejected about not being a top student anymore and worrying that Luz will blame herself if she doesn't succeed. She's sometimes secretive and doesn't always trust the people she's closest to but she's come a long way since season 1 and she's definitely on the right path. She's less rigid and she's learning how to accept her friends as they really are and in the process, accept herself for who she really is as well.
