Star Trek: Beyond

Well next on the list, it’s Star Trek. This film was... it was maybe the best of the new Star Treks, but it wasn’t quite tight enough to make it fantastic on it’s own. More Spoilerific thoughts below.

This film was at it’s best when it was engaging in the relationship they had developed between existent characters. The duets, especially Spock and Bones, they were fucking fantastic and highlighted why we enjoy their chemistry. Bones himself is basically part of the three main characters, simply due to how well Karl Urban has carried the role. Sulu continued to secretly be the most competent person on the ship and the obvious next captain, Chekov (RIP Anton, you were the best) and his sexual exploits in the background, they were all done fantastic. Obviously Scotty had the most to do on his own, but what I found weird was that Uhura was almost underused? She was there but she wasn’t doing anything massive on her own, like she wasn’t distinct aside from being a part of Spocks little arc. That was kinda disappointing.

I honestly wish more of the film had been spent on those relationships? I had huge hopes with the plot seeming to be ‘shore leave interrupted’, but as we came to realise that the station they were sent to was insanely advanced it dawned on me that it was going to go to the well again with the big stakes explosions destruction. Thankfully they didn’t break the Yorktown, but they certainly broke the old Enterprise.

Why do they have a fetish for blowing crap up in these films. Is it necessary? The mutilation of the ship initially was more than enough for me, then I had to sit and watch them just... crash it again.

I mean look at that. The film looked incredible, as they always do, that’s the best warp has ever looked. But I honestly didn’t need it to enjoy the film. It’s nice that they do it, but if they could avoid studio shutdown by cutting the CGI budget down by twenty five million then I’ll be more than happy.

All credit to the production crew and Simon Pegg, it did not feel like a production as dogged with issues as it was. Rogue One is a great example of a similar modern film that was butchered before release with rewrites and reworks, but Beyond came out very comprehensive. Up until about... an hour in it was working and functioning perfectly, I was even praising the writing for being surprisingly top notch. Then... is starts to struggle a little bit. The world was defined as a graveyard world, and they tracked the crew by tracking the only bit of a rare Vulcan metal that should be there, around Uhuras neck (sadly her largest plot contribution aside from getting Kirk on the other side of the door). However the graveyard was old enough that it caught the Kelvin. Surely in those centuries, more federation ships, with pre-destruction Vulcan numbers, would exist? I don’t know, niggles appeared at this point and some of the set pieces started to struggle.

The writing also struggled with the main non crew characters, Krall and Jaylah. Because of the massive focus on the core characters, and the promotion of Bones to equal screen time, these two were sharply curtailed into relatively basic roles. Jaylah started interestingly, but never really came back again in her own - she got a moment to resist the flow of the plot but was easily persuaded to ‘be brave’ which isn’t really how one overcomes deep trauma but okay sure whatever. She had a rivalry, i noticed, with the subcommander of Kralls folks, but that was so sandbagged by time restraints they had to break the battle flow to inform you it existed.

I was shocked that Idris Elba was Krall, mostly because... Krall was so painfully generic. I feel like we’ve done this a hundred times before, and this specific story twice. Villain from the Federations past, a soldier who can’t let a war go, ‘unity makes you weak’, ‘conflict is a part of life so blow up a monument’. It’s kinda painful how often I have seen that plot in relatively one dimensional villains. His subcommander had a line where he was like 'Complete the Mission' and that belonged in a different film that gave the idea that ‘captains do anything for their crew’ more time. It was the only tie in to the attempt to make him make more compelling. Didn’t work.

Neither of those two actors were used to their potential, and Idris Elba was most likely a shocking waste of money that wasn’t needed to be spent. He had nothing to do, nothing to say and no emotion to elicit, speaking in a guttural voice with a heavily covered face. And Paramount wonders why it’s struggling financially!

This film was sometimes annoying to watch because it had a lot of very good ideas, and it came surprisingly close to being truly great. The cheesy but awesome music killing the enemies should not have worked, but it did. The cinematics were beautiful and the camera work was fine. The heart and soul was in, and details when they were used were used well. But for every great touch was a moment of waste, such as the unintentionally hilarious reverse of the Into Darkness shot of the Enterprise crashing into the sea, but now with the Kelvin surfacing out of the pool. It was held back, especially in the second half.

What else to say. ‘Sulu is Gay now’ was the most understated thing, and I mean... yeah sure. It’s fine, I’m not going to complain about more representation. Fuck anyone who argued it was rubbing it in faces, it was exactly the same level as the Guardians of the Galaxy “the nova core guy has an alien wife and kid” and no-one complained about that. It’s actually sad how easy it is for them to play with inter-species relationships in the film more than same sex ones, I’m glad they are doing it, but you know.

I think the weird thing I actually got from Beyond is the realization that a film like this without human protagonists couldn’t exist today. People have a hard enough time watching or making films with female or minority protagonists. Imagine if they got one of the thousand Federation vessels without any humans on board and just followed that. Maybe they could be working on the frontier, not the best vessel, not the worst vessel either, just a Defiant level ship trying to keep a minor sector from erupting into internal conflict on the Federation border. An important job, but not a real threat. A thankless task, letting them focus on the extended crew, all those aliens that no-one cared about in the background of other sci fi films. Not played for laughs, not treated as fodder.

Wouldn’t that be interesting?

SURE I’m glad you liked those! Everything by Memphis is A+ and I love it so if you haven’t you should check out more stuff by them ( No Ordinary Love is super nice, That’s Just Life is very dear to me and so is Divinity, Speechless is… my otp song for every otp ever tbh) - Bring Me The Horizon is my fav post-hardcore band and both MMF and Chiodos are that genre so if you don’t know them give them a try! (Blasphemy, Run and Doomed are between my faves out of the latest album, and since you liked Under Your Halo you’re probably gonna like Follow You too) the album right before is amazing too if you’re okay with less melodic stuff, but the further back you go with BMtH the harder to listen to they get, just a heads up - Sleeping With Sirens are on the softer side of post-hardcore lately, Fly, Left Alone, Trouble, Fire and Empire To Ashes are some great ones, between the many, and, uhhhh, at this point I might have recced Nothing More a hundred times but let’s make it a hundred and one, try Funny Little Creatures, Do You Really Want It and Go To War out of the newest album! If you’re into punk and female voices you should check out Tonight Alive too, Jenna has one of my two fav female voices in rock right now (Crack My Heart and Temple are the latest two songs out!) and since I always rec stuff but I never rec anything by my favorite band ever, you ever heard of Alter Bridge? They’re more towards hard-rock/alternative metal, but check out Blackbird, Fortress, I Know It Hurts, Cradle To The Grave and Broken Wings just to make it one for every album I really, really adore this band and everything they ever made

More than headcanons for them I have an incredible amount of scenarios I’d like to see them in! It’s not a stupid question, don’t worry!! But I generally like to leave myself in Horikoshi’s hands for this sort of stuff, since I both enjoy the costumes as they are AND don’t want to be disappointed in case what I hope for doesn’t actually happen - that said, I’ve mentioned before that I’d really like Aoyama to get redirectors for his laser on his palms and for Kaminari to get a close combat weapon, since with the quirk he has anything metal would actually work wonders for him! He mentioned a sword, but I rest my case that tonfas would be cool, I really want him to use tonfas. A “costume” I don’t understand is Hagakure’s, by the way - would be nice if she got an actual costume and also I don’t really get why she’d wear gloves at all?? Mirio’s costume was made using his hair, I really want her to get something similar! That’s about it tho, I haven’t really thought much about anyone else in that sense~

who is more likely to hurt the other?

they both hurt each other on some level just bc they hv v combative personalities and also they r WATER SIGNS which means they r constantly in a fight over who is more valid. jokes on them tho: they r both unvalid as hell. light will center an entire week around getting back at L for something he did bc he’s basically amy dunne playing the long con all the time. L will hurt light in ways that last. he’ll just come out of nowhere with something like, “maybe it would be better if we hadn’t met” and light will just go quiet. that’s like, a sore spot L will push on if they argue bc he knows light is incredibly insecure abt his standing in L’s life. idk man. they love each other but there’s a lot of stuff they’re working thru and they’re leaving some scars along the way.

who is emotionally stronger?

hm. i think L is. he’s toughened up from all his experiences as the world’s greatest detective and had to deal w a lot more emotional crises than light. when it comes to big setbacks, he’s more likely to take them in stride whereas light is like that post that’s like “i’ll deal with it but you gotta let me be dramatic first.” before anything, he’s gotta scream in his scream jar then he can put those anxieties into the fridge and go back to figuring out his life.

who is physically stronger?

they hv abt the same physical strength. that’s less of a contest between them, altho light does sort of like it when L can lift him up. he’s done the same for L a couple times but its more fun to b carried than to b the carrier. anyway. if ur asking who wins more fights? then i would say that light wins a lot of their brawls bc he’s not afraid to play dirty. he has a sibling, he’s fought these battles many times before. its no rules just right in this house.

who is more likely to break a bone?

light has a lot of sports related injuries but not a lot of broken bones. meanwhile, mr. stays inside all day on my laptop has had three broken bones all from falling down the stairs or slipping on shit. just, like, hold on bc i’m picturing light and L sitting in the urgent care waiting room, both with broken arms bc of a roller skating accident. i don’t know how ppl break bones.

who knows best what to say to upset the other?

see this question and the first question r so close and so the answer is like both of them know each other well enough to hv their fingers poised over a particular emotionally destructive button at all times. i only say L is better at upsetting light bc he’s more willing to go the extra inch of underhandedness. of course, light nvr shows that he’s upset on the outside. no, he remains cool and calm, laughs it off probably, and then goes into the bathroom to hv a full scale meltdown in the dry bathtub. to b fair, that doesn’t happen often. its only during big, BIG arguments.

who is most likely to apologize first after an argument?

oh i don’t think either of them hv apologized once in their whole lives so it was a big step for them to apologize to each other. light caves first, trudging into L’s office with the most pathetic look on his face and being like “i’m sorry i called you a trash bag with arms.” and then L sort of sits there and has an inner conflict for a second before saying, “i’m sorry i told you looked like a kohl’s mannequin but not hot.”

who treats who’s wounds more often?

if their fights ever get too intense and someone gets hurt, its usually L knocking his head against something sharp and light has to like sit him on the toliet so he can fix him up. when he’s administering first aid, light starts to fuss over L and makes a lot of concerned noises.

“that hurts.” L squirms as light gives him stitches. “don’t pull too hard.”

“relax.” light says. “i’m actually quite good at this.”

(will i ever stop quoting that one line? no, i won’t.)

who is in constant need of comfort?

i don’t know abt comfort but light needs a lot of reassurance, both verbal and physical, that L does care abt him. he needs to b assured of his place in the world and in their relationship which L isn’t super great abt doing. but light is usually vocal abt when he needs comfort around L, whomst he rarely hides much of himself from, so its nvr a problem of L just not knowing. he just has no clue how to react.

there’s been a scarce few times when L has needed comfort after a taxing case but light is right there to just sort of, uhhh, hold him. let him make some horrible noises and talk. they try to b there for each other. its something they’re working on.

who gets more jealous?

oh for sure light. he gets flushed w jealousy anytime L shows a little more attention to someone else who could possibly usurp light’s romantic position in L’s life. its not fair. those ppl nvr worked as hard as he did to get L’s attention, to get his love. L thinks its kind of funny and will do shit to make light go green eyed. but that shit stops after they work with a french officer who gets a little too flirty w light and L just like, shuts that down. not so fun to b on the receiving end of that kind of jealousy.

who’s most likely to walk out on the other?

light. he’ll fucking do it at the drop of a hat too, just fucking walk out and not come back for three days. of course, they both think they can handle being separated so neither of them calls the other. but on the third day light’s trying to eat mcdonalds in his car and put a sausage mcmuffin in the hole L’s absence made so he goes to call him but his phone rings and it’s L on the other line like “please come back i forgot how quiet things r when ur not around also if ur at mcdonalds can u get me an apple pie okay thanks i love you.”

who will propose?

dklfsadlsfkj neither of them. they don’t want to get married tbh. i just literally can’t see them ever wanting to get married. if ur gonna put a gun to my head abt it tho, i would probably say light does but its only bc his mom started a campaign to get him to make an honest man out of L.

who has the most difficult parents?

um. i mean i guess light’s parents r more difficult. its not that they’re difficult tbh its more like they’re still adjusting to the life their son decided to lead bc its waaayyy different than what they thought was gonna happen. like first he’s gay (which isn’t a huge surprise to them like they’ve seen queer eye for the straight guy. they know things.) and then he’s dating some 24 yr old reclusive detective that happens to hv been soichiro’s boss for like a couple months and now light just sort of solves crimes w his boyfriend. so they’re being supportive but they’re also a little bit confused so sometimes it ends up in awkward situations where everyone’s at the dinner table and sachiko is like “so. what do your parents do, L?” and L is like “i don’t know who my parents were. i think they’re dead.” and she’s like, “oh. hm. well. that must b rlly rough for you.” meanwhile light is p much eating his napkin so he doesn’t start screaming at how little control he has over this shitty conversation.

who initiates hand-holding when they’re out in public?

they r rarely in public but uh. light does. he’s getting used to being out and part of him just rlly enjoys the physical evidence of their relationship that hand holding provides. that closet was so suffocating. it’s time to let those hands breath a little.

who comes up for the other all the time?

i still don’t entirely understand what this means entirely but i’ll take my best stab at it. i think L comes up for light a lot, esp if he’s talking to like the wammies or literally anyone who isn’t light himself or his family. like, p much everyone is like “but.....he’s kira???” and L is like ��look. listen. i don’t know why but he’s. he’s rlly important to me. so its maybe better if we don’t shit talk the guy who sucks my dick? at least not rn.” he doesn’t do it v often bc usually the insults thrown toward light r well deserved but sometimes he does. light doesn’t come up for L like ever. he nvr talks to anyone abt L. whomst would he tell? yamamoto? secretly he goes on a couple message boards tho and send mean anon messages to ppl talking shit abt L but that’s as close as he gets.

who hogs the blankets?

L will b wrapped in a big old blanket bundle like that picture of homer simpson where he’s like “ah. i’m just a big cozy cinnamon bun.” light’s like curled up on his side of the bed w just the sheet but then L reaches over and drags him into the blanket bundle so they r both toasty cinnamon buns together.

who gets more sad?

L is more prone to bouts of depression and can get lethargic if something hits him the wrong way. the first few times it happened, light tried to shake it out of him but he’s learned since then that he’s just gotta ride this shit out. so for a few days or weeks, he’s just got a sad boyfriend so they watch a lot of netflix and don’t get a ton of work done.

light v rarely gets sad. he’s got a v positive outlook on life and doesn’t let a lot of stuff ruin his mood. but when he is sad, its like a big event and he’s crying in the dry tub in just his briefs and a sweatshirt while listening to sufjan on repeat. look. he’s just gotta get it out of his system and then he’ll b fine!

who is better at cheering the other up?

light is better at finding stuff to cheer L up. if L is in a funk, he’ll go search for a good case or an interesting lead so he can present it to him like a cat dropping a mouse in front of him. L is.....not so good at cheering light up. all he knows is how to piss him off. but after a while he starts to puzzle out that light flourishes under praise so he’ll try to keep telling him what a good job he’s doing.

who’s the one that playfully slaps the other all the time after they make silly jokes?

i said this in my mikami/light post but uh, light laughing is so uproarious that he just. whacks the person making him laugh on the back super hard. L doesn’t do anything the first time but the second time he grabs light by the wrist and is like “don’t. control ur self, u loud scream laughing monster.” light keeps his hands to himself when he laughs after that. he’s actually quite embarrassed of his natural laugh bc it is so obnoxious so he often tones it down but sometimes!!! shit’s just too funny!!!

who is more streetwise?

neither of these two know a god damn thing abt the streets. ok, L knows a little bit but he forgot it after building a giant fucking building for one investigation team of like six ppl.

who is more wise?

L knows more abt the world and has more experience than light does. he’s not quite wise?? but he’s definitely more knowledgeable and it smacks him in the face a lot how super young light is. how much he just doesn’t know. but L’s only in his mid twenties. what the fuck does he rlly know?

who’s the shyest?

mmm. they aren’t shy ppl by nature so i’d say neither of them. esp when they’re together. combining their levels of pure confidence is like putting a fire in a room with more fire; it just increases the amount of fire. as their relationship progresses, they get more assertive w each other and idk man. they just don’t do that shy shit.

who boasts about the other more?

mmmm. i don’t think they brag abt each other a lot but i think light kind of wants to brag abt being w L. i mean, he didn’t think it would happen but then L did come and want to start something with him and its like?? wrow. but he doesn’t rlly hv anyone to brag to so he just sort of lets it sit like a smoldering piece of coal in his stomach, keeping him warm. L exculsively brags abt light during video conferences w the wammies like “MY PARTNER, WHO IS A GENIUS AND V ATTRACTIVE, AND I, WHO IS DATING THIS ATTRACTIVE GENIUS, HV FOUND A CLUE” and like everyone rolls their eyes like “dude u told us the same shit last week like please please please stop telling us abt ur hot boyfriend.”

who sits on who’s lap?

WINNIX

nixon sr is almost a carbon copy of nixon jr, except with a little less chill and a little more infidelity.

nixon and his dad are both sharp as tacks, bitingly intelligent, incredibly charming, kind of unstable, and raging alcoholics.

at first nix is a little freaked out. like??? “is this what i’m in for ten years down the line? is nix going to grow a handlebar moustache, play with guns, and chug vodka like it’s water?”

(at least he doesn’t have to worry about nix screwing the secretary)

nixon, however, has a strained relationship with his father (dick thinks its because theyre too alike) and is very adamant that he is never going to be the type of man he is. dick believes him – nix’s heart is too good for him to end up like stanhope nixon.

nix’s dad, as it turns out, likes dick a lot. so does nix’s sister blanche, who is just as charming as her father and brother, though a bit more grounded. she couldn’t approve of dick more, and she tells her brother that straight out.

nix’s mother left his father awhile back, but nix says she was distant even before that. she never meets dick; dick hopes she would have liked him, but hearing about how she ignored nix as a kid, he doubts he’d have liked her back.

he, nix, and blanche wind up becoming good friends, however! (because blanche is wonderful and i love her)

nix is VERY WORRIED that dick’s parents wont like him

he seems like everything good mennonite parents wouldn’t want their kid getting involved with. he’s certain they’re going to take one look at him and hate him.

he’s wrong.

dick’s mother possesses the same warmth as him, except she doesn’t bother to keep it hidden. she has one conversation with nix, somehow deduces everything about him in five minutes, and declares she likes him immediately.

dick’s sister ann is a rambunctious sweetheart who is genial to nix at first. when they discover they share a sense of humor, however, she decides she adores him, and he adores her back. they have a blast teasing dick together.

his father is the hardest to win over. at first, dick’s father doesn’t seem to like him at all, and nix is nervous around the man because he doesn’t know how to act around fathers. should he be polite? should he declare how much he loves his son? what should he do dick hELP –

after a while, however, dick’s father takes him aside for a long talk. they discuss where they both stand personally and nix discovers dick’s father is a very down-to-earth, sober man, with the same level head and wry humor as dick. he realizes he likes him, and is glad when dick’s father gives his approval of him too.

WEBGOTT

okay, you gotta understand – web loves his family a lot.

this does not mean he likes them.

they’re conservative where he is liberal. they’re practical where he’s artistic. they’re down-to-earth where he’s a dreamer. they don’t like to debate, they view arguments as strictly negative things, and they don’t enjoy theorizing about what could be. web is the odd man out in a family of realists.

still, he loves his parents and brothers. in particular he adores his little sister annie, who’s still young enough that she views her big brother as a hero (and web still sees her as a kid, even though she’s well into her teens)

he wants his family to approve of joe. the problem is his family isnt… sure how to handle david being gay. they’re THAT family, who loudly proclaims how supportive they are and take pride in that fact, but when they’re actually faced with their son’s sexuality things get awkward.

joe is NOT big on meeting the parents. he says that if david cares about him, it doesn’t matter what his homophobic parents think.

“they’re NOT HOMOPHOBIC, joe, and they matter to me, they’re my FAMILY –”

it turns into a fight.

it’s webster and liebgott, what do you expect?

eventually joe caves and meets web’s family.

it’s an awkward family dinner. no one really knows what to say. joe makes more than one inappropriate comment without meaning to, and clams up afterwards. by the time the night ends web is sure it’s a disaster.

he’s surprised when his mother calls him the next day to tell him how much they all liked joe – and he almost tears up when she tells him that she’s proud of him.

what web is really thrilled about is that his sister says she approves.

meanwhile, as much as joe says he doesn’t care what web thinks about his family?? he also says he doesn’t care what his family thinks of web

“its not the end of the world if they don’t like you.”

“you think they wont like me? wait, whoa, wHY wouldn’t they like me? joe???”

mama liebgott has raised four kids all on her own, and joe is her baby boy. she wants the best for him and is very critical of all the boys all of her kids have brought home. with four daughters and a son, she’s interviewed a lot of boys.

of all the potential boyfriends she’s interviewed, david is one of her favorites.

she interrogates him for about two hours (after sending joe to the store so he wont complain) and even though david is so nervous he can barely keep his words straight, he manages to win her over

(his baby blue eyes have nothing to do with it)

joe’s four older sisters are absolutely merciless. they love david too, but they have a blast teasing him and joe at every chance they get.

it also doesn’t help that the entire liebgott family likes to argue with each other as much as joe argues with web. there’s rarely a moment of peace in that house.

web likes joe’s family, but he’s more than satisfied with just one liebgott.

SPEIRTON

speirs does not have a good relationship with his father, and he’s estranged from his mother, so his parents aren’t really in the picture.

lipton would like to meet ron’s family, but he understands when he says he doesn’t want anything to do with them, and respects his decision.

“i’m sure they’d like you. you’re a very hard person to dislike,” ron says, and even if it’s just to make him feel better, lip appreciates it.

lip, on the other hand, is very close with his family.

he lost his father in a car accident when he was ten. this accident also paralyzed his mother and put her in a wheelchair for life. lip was so affected by this that he took over being the man of the house early, and as such has a strong sense of responsibility towards his mother and brother.

ron visits the boarding house for the first time pretty early on in their relationship, so he gets to know mama lipton without a lot of stress.

mama is a lot like her son – she’s thoughtful, level-headed, and a thorough judge of character. she has a way of seeing through people and getting a read on their character.

she makes ron a little nervous at first tbh, and this man is a career soldier.

mama lipton grows to feel very warmly for ron, especially when she sees how much ron adores her son and her son loves him back.

in turn, ron gets close to mama lipton. they both understand her son and his consummate need to help others, so they sometimes tag-team lip to take care of himself.

lip’s brother, on the other hand, takes a long time to warm up to ron. it’s not that he doesn’t like that his brother is gay – he just thinks ron’s a scary son of a bitch and is worried about his brother’s taste in men.

he tries to threaten ron a few times. it backfires. ron is definitely a scary son of a bitch.

eventually ron manages to get on civil terms with lip’s brother too, and it’s a relief to everyone, especially lip.

“you’re a hard person to dislike too,” he tells ron – and ron knows that’s a lie, but it’s so typical lip that he doesn’t care.

BABEROE

babe and gene both have pretty similar family situations – they’re both the third of five children, and both used to be troublemakers as kids, so they decide they’re probably going to like each others’ families immediately.

gene’s family is very, very cajun, and his dad speaks with such a thick accent that babe struggles to understand him. gene has to translate pretty often, and babe is surprised to find that gene’s father isn’t much like him at all. he’s rowdy, loud, and loves to tease his kids.

babe loves him.

the two of them are terrors together. gene doesn’t get a moment of peace.

gene’s sisters winnie and minnie are two years apart, but they’re practically twins. it takes babe awhile to learn to tell them apart, and they exploit his weakness to their own delight.

gene’s youngest brother is most like him – quiet, thoughtful, and a little more shy than gene. it takes him awhile to open up to babe, but gene has a close relationship with him and encourages him to get to know babe.

gene’s grandmother has been dead for years, but after gene tells babe about her healing abilities he talks about her so frequently that babe feels like he knows her already. he likes to think that she’d have liked him.

gene is overwhelmed by babe’s family.

it’s an entire pack of loud, outspoken redheads all screaming over each other in shrill philly accents. they’re nothing but welcoming to gene, and they’re very nice, but gene just… doesn’t know how to handle them.

babe thinks it’s hilarious.

he tries his best to make his boyfriend comfortable, but gene needs to get used to the heffron clan all on his own. it takes gene a while, but eventually he gets used to them.

babe’s brothers all rib gene, and his sister annie is so spunky that she’d determined to become gene’s best friend. it’s kind of wild to gene, but in a way it reminds him of his own family.

LUZTOYE

joe has a very low key family. he’s the baby of the family, with two older sisters. his dad died when he was fourteen, so his mom took over the duties of both parents, and operates with an executive functionality that’s almost terrifying.

joe was never doted on during his childhood. he learned to stick up for himself. he has a close relationship with his mom and is on good terms with his siblings, but he’s definitely not used to being the apple of their eyes

george

ADORED

by joes family

they all love him, his sisters think he’s the greatest thing theyve ever seen, and the love how effortlessly he manages to juggle joe’s nieces and nephews

(he’s a lot better with joe’s nieces and nephews than joe is, actually)

joe’s mother takes longer to warm up to him, but as soon as he wins her approval he automatically becomes her favorite son.

a part of joe is jealous that his family seems to like george even more than they like him, but he’s also so thrilled that they love him – and that george loves them back.

george’s family, meanwhile, is absolutely freaking insane.

joe meets all of george’s siblings on the same day. one of his sisters is in love with him, one of his brothers is taller than him, one of his sisters could probably beat him in an arm wrestling match, and his mother basically adopts him on site.

everyone loves joe.

joe is thrilled, george is thrilled, and george’s family is just waiting for the wedding.

Catching up....

I saw:

The Butcher Boy- A boy growing up in 1960s Ireland, seems a frightening young bully, the sort that threatens adults towering over him when he feels like it, and acts charming if it suits him. He has a host of problems. His father is a drunk with a violent streak while his mother has only the most tenuious grip of her own sanity. Even after his mother commits suicide he still has one bit of grounding in his life. He has a best friend who not only joins him in his games but acts as a check on his increasingly disturbed state. The boy focuses his anger on the mother of another kid, and when he acts on it he ends a reform school like setting. There the question of what is real and what is his delusion becomes more and more clear. When released the boy will find his friend has befriended the son of the woman he hates. Loosing his emotional anchor while his father drinks himself to death will have devistating consequences.

Believe it or not, in some ways this was a pitch black comedy. It’s narrated by the adult version of the boy, offering insights to his thinking that are often humorous in their contradiction to what we see him saying and demonstrating the boy’s lack of awareness of reality. That can be funny and tragic all at once. Emphasis on the tragic though. Dark and bleak and brutal, with a protagonist it’s easy to pity but impossible to love, it’s an interesting film. He reminded me far too much of some bullies I endured for me to really enjoy it.

Z. P. G.- The title stands for zero population growth, the goal behind the laws that are behind the central problem for the main characters. In the future the world has become hideously overpopulated to the point where people get oxygen rations and fight over extremely rare fresh vegetables. After considering options such as euthanasia for a portion of the population, it is finally decided to simply outlaw child birth for thirty years. Considering the nightmarish state of the world and the horrifying other possibilities, this seems quite a reasonable idea.

Unfortunately I see two big problems with their methods. First, they institute a draconian punishment for violators, implimented lynch mob style, that includes not just execution of the parents but the child. Reasonable as “no kids because humanity is to stupid not to over procreate” is, murdering kids is just the thing to make the government the baddies of the story. Secondly, rather than requiring some sort of long term birth control implant or some such, they use the honor system and voluntary use of in home instant abortion machines. Since the film came out just before abortion was legalized, I wonder if the use by the government seen as the bad guys is to equate abortion with “bad”. That would be a strange way to think since clearly the Earth is horrifyingly overpopulated and abortions would have been the merest drop in the bucket to solving the problem.

One of the ways this world copes with the situation is by selling ugly interactive child dolls to those with a parental need. Sure, the movie was made more than forty years ago so they didn’t know modern tech, but golly the Baby Alive doll I had a few years after wasn’t creepy like these. Well, until she broke and Pop did “brain surgery” on her only to finds the broken part too hard to replace and the glue didn’t work to fasten the scalp back on. I just played with a doll with a top of her head as a seperate piece. Still, these monsterous child subsititute dolls get away with it because shrinks do brainwashing on their patients to make them accept the “no babies so play with dolls” situation.

Anyway, a woman gets all stupidly baby obessed, and without telling her hubby decides to have one. Her hubby is played by Oliver Reed, a guy that when a rare kid from the last generation bumps into him, he lifts the kid up by the shoulders and stares at him such that you wonder whether he plans to do something violent rather the probably intended stew of sadness. I wondered if his is naturally intense, aggressive, and cold masking fury demeanor were meant to indicate a sexist aspect of the society dominating the women, a specific indication of the dynamics of their relationship over turned by her unilateral choice of pregnancy, or simply a quirk caused by casting the then bankable star. Whatever the reason, it seems almost surprising when he decides the she let her carry the child to term, hiding her away in a forgotten bomb shelter under the guise of a marriage break up.

Basically, the parents so something incredibly selfish. Ignoring completely the greater society, think of the child. They want a baby, but they aren’t risking just their life. If anyone finds out about the child it will be killed. It will have to live hidden either in the bomb shelter or some other equally dark secret place. The child will have to live in utter isolation, without contact with any other human beings but their parents. Assuming once the prohibition on children is lifted they cease executing those that broke the law when it was in effect, they will not come into contact with anything beyond solitary confinement until they are in their 20s. And what kind of world will it be, where you have to wear gasmasks and boiler suits to go outside in the smog, all sorts of animals including pets are extinct, and food is the tasteless contents of toothpaste tubes. I dunno, but if you knew that misreable life you hate is the best case senario for the kid, maybe having a child just to make YOU feel better about yourself is a bad idea!

Anyway, the kid is born but unfortunately their best friends find out. That couple decide to use the threat of turning them into the authorities in order to get the baby for themselves. And despite the fact the parents never should have had the kid you have to hope they find a way to escape the situation for the sake of the baby.....

Very interesting film. I tend to like early 1970s dystopias saying humanity is doomed, dated and unsubtle as they can be.

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 version Catalina Caper- A goofy henchman type steals an ancient scroll for a married couple who intent to scam a rich guy into buying it. They will give the rich baddie a forgery and then return the original to the museum because these aren’t baddie baddies, ‘cause they need to stay redeemable. See they have a son who doesn’t like their naughty ways, and he’s in the right late teens/early twenties age group to hang those young folk that are the other focus of the film.

See a guy has just returned from home, accompanied by a guy from school, and there is partying to do. Right after a ferry ride where the ship board entertainment is actually Little Richard, that is. The guy may be the local stud, surrounded by a flock of girls at all times, but the pal is played by Tommy Kirk, probably recently fired by Disney and now stuck in films like this. So when one of them meets up with a Creepy Girl (Servo’s name) it’s the pal that gets the romance. I gotta say though, it’s kinda amazing since her opening words are to tell of an odd childhood encounter with a fish. Now while I have my own “little me meets a fish underwater” story, I’ve always figured it wasn’t the best way to introduce myself to guys. Of course I’m not pretty with a foreign accent, so maybe that makes the difference. But can he win the girl when she has a big bad boyfriend working for the baddie baddie? And does anyone care?

The movie is your average attempt at a 1960s comedy aimed at the clean cut youth of the day. Or at least the 12 year olds still fantasizing about being teens. It’s not to far from the rest the beach party films or the live action comedies Kirk might have made at Disney if it hadn’t been such a homophobic era. ** It’s not a particularly great example, it certainly isn’t memorable, but it’s definately typical. The guys give it a nice bit of mocking, with Servo’s love of Creepy Girl being particularly nice.

Gotta say though, my favorite thing was the Mads invention exchange of tank tops. That is the tops of tanks as wearable item, a silly and wonderful idea. Here we have THE one sort of tank top I want in my wardrobe! LOL

**I believe Kirk is supposed to have been fired because his being gay had the potential of being made public. I might be remembering wrong, of course, since I can’t remember where I heard/read it. Probably NOT in an extra on a Disney DVD, that’s for sure.

tarris is a bosmer thief/assassin who’s actually real bad at fighting and is probably half magpie, don’t wear jewelery near her she will Have It

relic is a bosmer vampire who is an asshole. he’s awful. he knows magic but mostly likes to Stab. he exists in the same world-state as tarris and kharza and probably a few others

kharza is an orc warrior who’s like the only lawful good character i have, whoops. she sometimes turns into a werewolf and mauls people but that’s a minor character flaw. she’s a big gay

serindil is an altmer mage!! very very much a glass cannon. they were with the thalmor embassy in skyrim until they... sort of defected?? they’re still an ass tho

dáithí lathlaeril is a half elven wild magic sorcerer and the only one i have actually played!! they’re half of a set of twins born to a high elven noblewoman and her human husband. they accidentally burned down their family library after overhearing their mother agree to essentially disinherit them, and have been an adventurer ever since. they have Lots of emotions always, and swing between “i’m inherently superior to all of you and also have cool magic” and “oh god i’m the worst i’m pathetic is my magic even good” and it’s terrible. please give them a hug. their name is pronounced DAH-hee

zeerith is a drow rogue!! he had just the worst life but is So Good at pretending he didn’t. what do you mean he’s almost certainly traumatised and emotionally messed up, he’s smiling, see?? trust him. he really really hates killing and would much rather talk his way out of trouble, but isn’t at all above hurting people to defend people?? also he’s very handsome and charming, focus on that. no don’t ask him if he’s ok. very very prone to talking someone to death if given half a chance

most of my actually original characters are from the same world!! it’s tag is “untitled a” because i don’t have a name for it yet lmao. there’s also a bunch of gods to go with these guys but i don’t even have names for them yet so lmao

fionn is prolly currently my most developed character from it. he’s an elf, which is fairly rare, and a magic user, which is rarer. he doesn’t care tho. he’s an ex-soldier who deserted after some very bad stuff happened, and he’s just trying to keep his head down. the god of luck and fate took a shine to him tho, so that’s not going too well. he uses his magic to make people think he’s much better at playing music than he is, but he could do Very cool things. he won’t tho

sabre is also an elf, but she’s a thief and very happy about it. she’s tiny and literally always ready to fight. she’ll fight anyone. she’ll Win against anyone. don’t fight sabre she jut doesn’t stop. she’s got a pretty strict Code tho, and won’t steal from anyone who can’t afford it, or fight anyone who can’t fight back. technically steals to give to the poor but also keeps a lot. she worked for that ill gotten gold!! she’s one of the two people who got “chosen” by the twin gods of the hunt, which she’s pretty stoked about. she’s got a tattoo honoring one of the twins

zarifa is the captain of an as-yet unnamed ship, and a totally legitimate merchant sailor. no pirates here absolutely not haha what’s that officer nope no illegitimate goods either, trust her. she’s got a good heart but also she’s pretty practical, and ensuring her own survival and the survival of her crew trumps morals every time. she’s the “chosen” of the god of the sea, which is an incredibly mixed bag

sylvie pike is zarifa’s first mate, but not nearly as professional. she likes to have fun, and insists on dragging zarifa with her. she’s got a much thicker accent than any other member of the crew, and makes it impenetrably thicker when she wants to be difficult. she’s not as good at overcoming her conscience as zarifa is

billie shaw is possibly my oldest current oc, holy shit. they’re kind of the odd job person aboard the ship, and also sing shanties and (badly) play the accordion. has a big big soft spot for kids. also hates shoes. what the fuck billie. put some boots on you ridiculous human being

sara tillman is possibly the only ordinary person on board the ship. she’s the ship’s doctor, despite being easily the youngest person aboard, and despite having only ever operated on her family’s farm prior to being hired. she’s got like ten siblings and loves all of them very very much

there’s also a handful of others from this universe who aren’t nearly as fleshed out yet, other than the gods, but they aren’t fleshed out!! “finch neither are any of the people you’ve talked about” [sweats]

On Point With: Shuga Cain

This queen’s got the goods, baked and otherwise. A Cali native with a golden voice, she’s getting ready to host her new monthly show at the West End and slaying parties and guest spots left and right in the meantime. One of our favorite new additions to NYC nightlife, get to know Miss Shuga Cain!

Thotyssey: Hi Shuga, thanks for talking to us!

Shuga Cain: HI Jim! Thank you so much for having me! I’m so excited to be chatting with Thotyssey.

Yay! So it's already February now... that was a pretty insane January we just had, wasn’t it?

January has been insane! It’s been quite an emotionally charged first month of 2017...unthinkable, actually. I can’t believe the state of our nation's politics at the moment--if you can even call it politics. But I must say that drag has provided me the perfect platform to express all these emotions. And for that I am grateful!

I saw a clip of you doing Ashley Judd's anti-Trump poem/speech at Look Queen recently. It was pretty flawless--you must have listened to that non-stop for at least a day or two! HA! Thank you! Yes, I was trying to cut the mix the day it came out, and spent until the following morning tweaking. I listened to that mix on repeat for hours the day of the performance, up until about twenty minutes before I went on! I think that was the quietest I have ever been backstage. Usually, I’m chatting and messing around with the girls. Lord, I was stressing! My lip sync came and went, but the message was way too important and relevant not to do it. I had to perform it that night!

We're so glad you did! And in fact you've been turning it up quite a bit these past few months. Are you going the "go everywhere and do everything" route with your drag right now? I am! I’m kinda of an “all or nothing” kind of person, and being that I’m fairly new to the NYC nightlife scene, I have just immersed myself in all that is going on. And as you know, there is a lot going on!

I’ve also just been grateful to have met some of the most wonderful people in the drag community, and supporting them is important to me. So yes, I’ve been everywhere lately! However, there are still so many shows/people I have yet to see/get to know, and so much I want to do. So I don’t see myself slowing down anytime soon!

Okay, so let's get to the beginning. First of all... you're originally a Cali girl, I believe? Yes, Miss Shug is a California girl, living the struggle in New York City, honey! I was born and raised in Northern California, and moved to NYC about five years ago. What brought you here?

I used to be a Producer for Scholastic Education, and they shipped me from California to NYC to work on a few projects. I was so incredibly lucky to have made it to NYC that way. It’s been a dream come true, to live in NYC and perform. And after five years of working in the corporate world, I’ve finally made the plunge to focus on my creative projects! It’s scary at times, but I’m constantly reminded that I’m doing the right thing and all will be OK! I’ll have it no other way!

When did you start actually doing drag? I’ve been doing it off and on for two years, but have been more serious about it within the last six months! So even though I’m old AF, I’m a young queen! Haha! I’m thankful for my background in performance, because that’s helped me so much. Tell us about that background! Well.. .I used to be an opera singer, got my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Opera Performance. Then I decided to switch to musical theater while auditioning for young artist programs. I did a lot of local and regional theatre in Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area, gigged with Disney for stint. This is part of my many lives that I mentioned earlier. God, I’m so old [laughs]! The word is "seasoned!”

Ha! I’ll take it!

What was your first drag performance like? Shug’s first performance was so fun! It was a talent show for a local running group. I grabbed two of my closest friends to dance back-up, I mixed and recored vocals for the number and sang live. It’s Shug’s signature number, but I rarely do it: “Land of Lola” from Kinky Boots, but I changed it to “Land of Shuga!” It’s somewhere on YouTube with like 10 views! Soon to be 11! So, what's the best thing about doing drag for you?

I think the best thing about drag for me is that I’ve finally found something that brings all of my creative forces together in one place. For the first time, I feel 100% comfortable artistically. I’m a perfectionist, and am always worrying about what it is that I’m doing, even while I’m doing it. And as Shug--I mean, I still am a perfectionist and I still worry about what I’m doing, but when the time comes to just do it and she takes over, and I stop second guessing myself and can just be present in my art. It’s incredible and I don’t take it for granted!

Okay, as always this gurl is booked, so let's talk gigs. First of all, I see you're guesting for Zalika Parsons’ and Bella Noche's show at the Rosemont on Sunday. That seems to be the new hot place in Brooklyn, have you been there before?

I’m nervous, cuz my passport expired. You need a passport to get there, right? [Laughs] It’s so damn far! I don’t go out to Brooklyn much, but that is going to change. I love the scene out there, and the BK girls are fierce and I want to be a part of that! It’s important to me that Miss Shug is a versatile kween.

As far as The Rosemont, I haven’t been out there yet, and I am hella excited to go out and support my friends Zalika and Bella! These girls are fun, talented, and making waves! I can’t wait!

I kinda feel like, with your generation of drag queens, "Brooklyn v. Manhattan" isn't really a thing anymore... everyone performs everywhere! Do you find that to be the case? I totally agree. I don’t see a BK vs Manhattan thing at all. What I’ve noticed about the New York queens is that everyone is super supportive, and we all genuinely want each other to succeed! And I definitely see that within the new upcoming queens also. Now don’t get me wrong, we are slinging each other shade left and right, but it’s all in love!

I'm happy that you're part of the EDEN collective of nightlife luminaries that throw some of the best damn parties in the city. You'll be performing at their Zodiac: Age of Aquarius bash on February 10th at the Hudson Terrace. What do you think it is about the EDEN brand that makes it the Ticket? Yes! EDEN has been incredible, and so much fun! I’m living for these Zodiac themes this year, and am excited to be involved in the first production number to kick off EDEN 2017. I think what makes this brand the ticket is that they are trying to switch things up when it comes to gay nightlife. It’s not just a DJ and a dance floor. The themes encourage people to get dressed up and excited about the events. I love the incorporation of art, there’s always cool unique art installations. I started selling my baked goods there a few parties ago, and they always have sick pop-up performances. EDEN is giving you an experience and people love that! WERK, baked goods!

And here's an exciting development... you're new monthly show at the West End debuts on February 23rd! What can we expect from “Shug's Sweet Drop?” YES! I am thrilled to join The West End family, and can’t wait for Shug’s Sweet Shop to debut! You can expect to get to know Miss Shug and her talents intimately! HA! Not like that! I meant that I’ll be debuting my singing abilities much more. I’ll have a special guest each month, we’ll serve you shows, games, and me on that mic! Lord help everyone when I get to telling stories! It’s a show that I always envisioned having, and The West End is a perfect venue for it. Think “variety show,” on a very intimate scale! Oh, and complete with candy, of course!
