Imagine this:

You’re in your Film Studies class, today being the marker for the beginning of the unit on Queer Cinema with Stranger Things as the main focus. The plastic of your iced coffee bends in your grip as you press the cool condensation soaked surface to your overheated cheek, an attempt combat the overwhelming warmth of the classroom as your classmates chatter on and on about their weekend—a movie they’d seen, a party they’d gone to, some assignment they’d missed. You thumb at your phone’s power button, checking the time. 8:15. Class was going to start any minute.

As if you summoned him, your professor walks in, his brown overcoat haphazardly thrown over his slouching shoulders as his bag swings by his side. As he gets settled at his desk, computer being booted up and papers pulled, a group seated ahead far enough ahead of you that it should have been embarrassing that you could hear them started to whisper.

“Nobody back then really believed Mike and El would be endgame. No way.”

“I’ve seen the receipts, Jen. The general audience was full of a bunch of fucking morons. Reddit fully believed Will was going to die and give his blessing to them to get married or some shit.”

“That’s because its fucking Reddit, Carla. There’s no way people believed Byler was bones. That’s bullshit.”

“I know it seems impossible, but what cues we consider as obvious are, well, not to the general audience of the time.” Your professor spoke, his voice a quiet interruption of their escalating volley. The main two engrossed in their argument flushed, facing him.

“But there was so many hints there,” Another student piped up—Bryce, their name was. “I studied the show in my high school film class. The lighting, the color theory, the parallels—like how do you miss the blatant connections between the love triangle and Little Women? Or the Garage Fight with Eyewitness?”

The professor smiled, his eyes moving from the seats around him to focus on the unfastening of the cuffs of his shirt.

“Some people don’t want to believe what is there. Part of that had to do with the poor quality of writing in shows prior to Stranger Things. While cult classics, programs like Supernatural, Smallville, Teen Wolf had all baited their audience time and time again with plot lines that would never be finished or solved in a satisfying way—both for the queer audience and otherwise.”

“But how do you really know?” Jen asked, her face a muddled mask of disagreement. “How do you like, really know people were like that? That they believed that shit?”

The professor raised his arm, the sleeved rolled tightly above to show a small phrase in dark ink on his wrist. ‘Tell me about your dead dog baby.’ You could feel your eyes widen in recognition.

“I know because during the time, I was on tumblr.”

It seems bound to happen that at some point the two pairs get pushed into their own flavor of disaster. There's lamenting about being away from the others but a manner of exasperated confidence that the other guys would do just fine with them.

Dogi would be missing Anelace though. Best believe.

Inevitably things come to a head, and both pairs through some twisting manner of development end up fighting the same big bad. What are the chances?! Talk about a fun little coincidence.
