Also, liebe Nina, erzähl doch mal von deinen Top underrated JK-Momenten. Also mal ab von Silvesterbums, Nepal, Jamaika, Mundpropaganda, etc.

Kann alles sein, nicht nur Fernsehmomente, sondern auch Zitate aus Podcasts, Interviews, Bilder, GIFs, was auch immer...du weißt schon was ich meine, glaube ich.

Begleite die beiden auch schon ewig, stelle aber fest, dass man über die Jahre doch viel vergisst/verdrängt oder einfach nicht mehr auf dem Schirm hat...

Danke für die viele Arbeit und Liebe, die du in den Blog und in deine FF steckst. Gerade in diesen mehr als bescheidenen Zeiten tut es gut, wenigstens für ein paar Minuten jeden Tag mal kurz durchatmen und an was anderes denken zu können, so banal es auch sein mag...

Diese Ask ist schon etwas älter, was hauptsächlich daran liegt, dass mich solche Fragen überfordern. Also habe ich jetzt unter dem Cut sehr, sehr viele Sachen aufgelistet, die mir im Kopf herumgeistern und über die vielleicht nicht ganz so häufig gesprochen wird wie über anderes, was JK in fast 15 Jahren angestellt haben.

JK auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt. Ich kann nicht in Worte fassen, wie sehr ich die Echtheit und Emotionalität dieser Maz liebe.

Gemeinsam Dumm. Immer, wenn öffentlich darüber gesprochen wird, JK würden sich "seit ein paar Jahren" politisch/gesellschaftlich positionieren, denke ich an daran, dass sie das auch bei MTV Home schon erfolgreich getan haben und sich nur niemand die Mühe gegeben hat, genauer hinzugucken.

Aushalten - Brechmittel. "Ich hab's nicht kommen sehen." Das Ende dieser Maz ist einfach legendär.

Jokos Eishockey-Unfall bei NeoParadise. Wirklich alles daran, von dem Schock, als die Meldung damals kam, über die Aufbereitung der Maz in der Folge bis hin zu Klaas, der vor Joko im Krankenhaus war, hat sich bei mir im Hirn eingebrannt.

"Ich glaube, dass die Begegnung mit Klaas in meinem Leben die wahrscheinlich positiv-schicksalhafteste überhaupt gewesen ist." - Für mich das Schönste, was Joko jemals über Klaas und ihre Partnerschaft gesagt hat. Auch in der Art wie er das sagt, mit dieser Ruhe und Reflexion dahinter.

"Ohne den geht’s natürlich nicht. Und damit meine ich es nicht beruflich sondern privat." - Auch das lieb ich sehr. Für Klaas scheint es völlig absurd zu sein, es überhaupt aussprechen zu müssen.

Bis einer heult - JK (+ Schmitti) im Gruselhaus. Generell ist NeoParadise ein wenig underrated, weil es das unauffällige Mittelkind zwischen Home und Halligalli ist, aber diese Maz gucke ich einfach extrem gern, vor allem für das Ende

Rollschuhyoga. Ich vergöttere dieses Spiel. Manchmal sind JK so sehr im Einklang miteinander, ohne es zu merken.

Klaas mit der Puppe bei How I pet your Brother. Ich liebs einfach, wie deutlich man ihm ansehen kann, wie viele unangemessene Dinge er gerne sagen oder tun würde, aber er schafft es gerade noch so, sich zusammenzureißen xD

Stehen, damit es weitergeht. Weiß nicht, ob das heute noch so bekannt ist, aber es war damals eine dieser Aktionen, die ein wenig aus dem Ruder geraten ist

Rangeln. Das war dann die Aktion, die komplett aus dem Ruder gelaufen ist und ich hab es geliebt

Klaas' Reaktion auf die Kameras, als Joko ihn zum 50 Seconds to Mars Konzert einlädt. Ich fand es sehr soft, wie enttäuscht er anscheinend war, dass daraus ein Beitrag wurde und kein privater Abend mit Joko

Joko, der es mit einem Lächeln auf den Lippen und einer Umarmung für Jan schafft, ganz laut Klaas ist meins zu schreien.

JK im Hochseilgarten. Wie stolz und unterstützend Klaas mit Joko ist, find ich ehrlich süß.

Die Good Night Show. Jede Folge, jede Variation. Selten hat Joko so gut in ein Format gepasst und selten hat er mich müheloser unterhalten. Wäre WSMDS nicht gekommen wäre es vermutlich immer meine Lieblingsshow für ihn gewesen.

I was a bit bummed out by Engage but with all your post on it I tried the older FE games, and it's really great so far! Do you have any recommendations or favorite characters? :D

Nice! I'm loving Engage, but that's very related to (1) nostalgia, and (2) liking a game more battle-focused after Three Houses' story-focus. (It's nice to have best of both worlds on one system!) What have you started playing?

If you're just looking to learn the ropes of FE gameplay, both FE7 (just "Fire Emblem" outside of Japan, the first released elsewhere) and Awakening are decent starting points for the general structure. Both also have really solid characters and simple-but-fun plots (which are handled without the over-the-top dramatics of Engage). FE7 outside of Japan has added intro chapters to help players get used to the genre (where your "lord" is Lyn, before Eliwood and Hector are introduced as the lords for the original game). The translation is a little uneven sometimes (and sloppy at others), but it's a very solid introduction if you have access to a GBA/DS/DSLite (or want to emulate).

Awakening is easier to get access to (since it's more recent and on 3DS), and is also a nice, solid intro to FE gameplay. It also has more bonus maps/DLC that extend gameplay and let you nab extra characters (both from older games and from Awakening itself). Honestly, Awakening seems likely to remain my favorite game in the series: it's just all-around fun. Good plot (if not a complex one), great characters (and DLC to flesh them out more), fun gameplay, multiple difficulty options, and some DLC that lets you obtain ways to boost levels/supports/money/weapons/classes, if you're into that. I've put in close to 1,000 hours in Awakening - due to the support system, there are all sorts of ways to mess around with how you play the game and use certain characters.

Sacred Stones (FE8, the second released outside of Japan for GBA) is a lot of fun, and has a brief route split if you like to play more than once, but if you want to try a GBA game, FE7 is probably the better starting point, for the Lyn chapters. (Especially because managing the convoy and items is clunky in the GBA games compared to later ones, so the intro chapters help before you have to figure out inventory management and gameplay!)

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn (on Gamecube and Wii, respectively) had the most complex plot since Genealogy of the Holy War (which was not released outside of Japan). The problem with them is that they are all but impossible to track down for a reasonable price - both bombed spectacularly at release, so copies are scarce. Emulation is usually the way newcomers to the series go if they want to tackle the Radiant games.

Shadow Dragon is a remake of the very first game, but it hardly added anything beyond updated portraits and battlefield grids so you don't accidentally wander somewhere where you'll get your butt kicked if you mathed wrong. 😅 It's on DS, and I'm honestly not sure how easy it is to find now. It sold so poorly that FE12 (a remake of FE3, Mystery of the Emblem) once again was Japan-only. Which sucks, because FE12 actually beefed up characters and plot! Shadow Dragon would be a good place to get the hang of gameplay, but its story is more Final Fantasy 1 than Final Fantasy 6. 🤷‍♀️

If you can't find (or emulate) FE7, Awakening is a solid place to start. It eases you into gameplay, lets you grind (either for free, especially if you play on Normal, or with paid DLC), lets you choose Casual (no permadeath - characters come back next chapter if "killed") or Classic (permadeath - pick a god and pray) and has, in purely mathematical terms, an epic buttload of characters to choose from if some *cough*Vaike*cough* aren't to your liking. Just, uh... listen to Severa. Trust me. Listen. To. Severa. You can thank me later.

Fates has fuuuuuun battles and some really amusing joke weapons (it's Azura with the broom! But wait - wait! She's out, she's out, Jakob came in from the side with pebbles! Victory! Victory to the angry butler!!! 😱), but the plot and some other stuff is... well. The monkeys with typewriters were going to manage Shakespeare, but then they ate too many pot brownies and we got Fates instead. Have fun killing goo daddy with your flaming chainsaw sword! Fates also has three different routes, which can be a bit confusing if you don't know how they differ. (Birthright is the "easy" route, Conquest will kick your ass six ways from Sunday and add a seventh kick at chapter 10, and Revelation was written frantically after the monkeys demanded a union and walked out of the job.)

Shadows of Valentia is the last of the 3DS games, and a remake of the second game (Gaiden, never released outside of Japan). It's... weird. Fully voiced, which is very cool (especially since the cast is solid), and has some interesting twists on the FE formula (like dungeons and Mila's Turnwheel, which lets you go back a number of turns without having to restart the whole map), but the plot remains pretty early-90s-JRPG, and they opted to keep in a fuckton of water maps and desert maps that are insanely tedious. Reclassing also feels a bit clunky after the relative freedom of Awakening and Fates. It's definitely well done, but I wouldn't recommend it as an intro to the series.

Same goes for Three Houses: except for the way the battlefield functions, it is very different from the other games. It is darker, attempts more complexity than it should have (at the expense of some plotpoints left dangling in all routes), and has four different routes that, with one exception, force you to choose the route after a single battle and barebones intro to the characters. It also has a loooooot of stuff you can micromanage and/or waste time on and a weird (by FE standards) recruitment system. Great game, all four routes, but a little more than Intelligent Systems could juggle. (This is especially obvious if you pick the Black Eagles.) It's also quite easy, by FE standards, outside of some paralogues (side battles) and the DLC (which was very, very simple compared to Awakening, Fates, and Shadows of Valentia, though a lot of fun if you like a challenge!).

Awakening, Fates, Shadows of Valentia, and Three Houses (like Engage) all give you a choice of male or female avatar, and Casual or Classic mode. (Fates also has Phoenix mode, but ew. No. Bad.) All also have DLC. With DLC in mind, remember that the 3DS eShop goes down for new purchases as of the end of March of this year. If you get Awakening, Fates, or Shadows of Valentia, buy the DLC now if you think you'll want it! (It adds new characters, new weapons, some additional lore and/or character development, and some silly stuff like beach chapters. 🤣)

Honestly, if Engage is all you've tried, I'd say go with Awakening (the game Lucina is from) or FE7 (where, as mentioned above, Lyn is from). Your call! Both are good intros without so much management and bloat they get overwhelming. And none of the choices you make will drastically alter the rest of the game! Awakening should also still be easy to find, compared to what came before.

Favorite characters? Pegasus knight has been my favorite class since I started playing, and my all-time favorite character is Cordelia. I also love Ninian, Rebecca, Lyn, Serra (all from FE7), Eirika, Seth, L'arachel, Lute (all from FE7), the Whitewings (Palla, Catria, and Est, who are in FE1, 2, 3, 11, 12, and 15), Caeda (FE1, 3, 11, and 12), Nephenee (FE9, 10) Olivia, Inigo, Severa, Lucina (FE13), Laslow, Selena, Soleil, Reina, Flora, Jakob (FE14), Mathilda, Clair, Mae, Boey (FE15), Edelgard, Dimitri, Hapi, Lysithea, Constance, Ingrid, Seteth, FERDINAND VON AEGIR (FE16), and I'm still deciding on the new game, but Chloé and Etie are great thus far in what I've played. If I had to pick top three of all time, I'd probably go with Cordelia, Inigo/Laslow, and Edelgard.

There are a handful of spin-off games (Fire Emblem Heroes, two Warriors games, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE), but they're all very different from the core of Fire Emblem proper. Fun, but not a good intro to the series (and like Engage, they rely on knowledge of past games/characters).

Longest answer ever, but I hope it helps you figure out which way you'd like to go next! You may enjoy Engage more when you know the Emblems better. 😁

Untitled Wednesday Library Series, Part 29

The history and philosophy of science is (like all literatures, I suspect) shot through with vital texts no one much reads anymore. For biology, psychology, and some corners of philosophy, Jakob Johann Freiherr von Uexküll’s 1934 A Foray Into the Worlds of Animals and Humans (originally party to the far better title Streifzüge durch die Umwelten von Tieren und Menschen) is one of those texts.

The How

This is the exact sort of book academic libraries are outfitted to supply you; older translations with good covers are pretty common. This is the most recent, and cheapest, preparation, which I own mostly because I found it used. Should you wish to read this exact printing (2010, University of Minnesota, trans. Joseph D. O’Neil), it’s available as a PDF here.

The Text

I could say a lot of things here, none of which would probably satisfy the future me that’ll inevitably reread this at some point. Let me say only some of those things and hope for grace.

This text shared an era with behaviorism (fuck you, Watson), among other paradigms (fuck you, Kuhn). Pre-ethology, more or less; certainly pre-posthumanism. Into that problematic mosh strode Uexküll with haymakers like ‘Space and time are of no immediate use to the subject.’ Uexküll was a non-Darwinian. Uexküll wanted to use terms like ‘Umwelt’ and ‘magical path’ and ‘reflex republic’. Uexküll made a lot of people very annoyed.

Time has been pretty kind to some of his perspectives. His Umwelt concept has more miles on it than he could’ve dreamed; reflex republics are mainstays of, as one current example, Peter Godfrey-Smith’s work on cephalopod cognition. His main evolution (fuck you, Uexküll) was to see the worlds of animals — and therefore also of humans, ish — as incommensurable mappings of shared surroundings.

For this book, an individual’s world is necessarily made up only of what the individual perceives and how it perceives it. Cognition works on those perceived worlds; the worlds of individuals with different perceptions and cognitions are fundamentally different. This, coupled with an early tack toward cybernetics and some mechanical perspectives on physiology, make this arguably the cornerstone of biosemiotics. Good shit.

Also, Dorion Sagan wrote the introduction. I don’t remember liking it much, but I’m not gonna reread it for this pissant little post. Safe to say I wouldn’t have a favorable review.

The Object

This is disappointingly milquetoast on the part of the University of Minnesota press — as far as I can tell, the only liberties taken were with a few inexplicably colored glossy plates and the Sagan intro. Bare minimum in terms of paper; dumb fucking cover. Luckily it’s saved by Uexküll’s original illustrations, including numbers like

Free Him (1934) and Bicep Tattoo for Ms. Frizzle as Sketched by @girlfriendsofthegalaxy (1934):

The Why, Though?

Because (1) German shit and (2) philosophy of biology shit and (3) used book shit. I actually do reference this one occasionally, which reliably feels good. Handy to have access to, if only mental.

omg okay so i was totally ignorant but now i am enlightened because the brilliant @h00f sent me the booth video recording and im dying over it so here we goooo. i recorded it and uploaded the vid into davinci resolve so i could zoom in and also go through frame by frame.

those guardian statues have staffs!!! that’s so rad, like the Watcher and shit, they also have less big necks?? or they might be bowing down. they look a lot more humanoid than the guardian/eridian statues im used to!!!

like as far as i can see they don’t have the butt spikes? maybe these are just super well preserved and thus not broken/spiky/cracked!! I do think the staffs are awesome! I know the Watcher carried one and so do some in TPS (I don’t recall seeing any in bl1 with staffs? im pretty sure they used their energy claw things) so maybe these are a higher tier of guardian than the ones we see in bl1? (which, if the Eridians wanted us to open Pandora’s vault as punishment for stealing fire the tech on Promethea, then that would make sense)

AND THE CRANES! and the buildings!!!!! is this Promethea’s vault? there’s something in the sky near the moon (?) so i thought maybe that was the asteroid belt but... it’s only condensed in one area..?

it looks like a rocky place (you know, the quasmarian quarry Typhon mentions?!), i could see it, it looks super well-kept!!! my only problem?? it’s not underground/next to a cliff or anything. i guess it’s actually possible with those cranes and shit that it’s been excavated completely

i think we walk out of a temple here, which makes me think this is connected to the temple with all those monster dudes in it (also i can’t be the only one who thinks the blue sparkles on the statue on the far left makes it look like it has a shiny thicc butt. i CANNOT be the only one)

well ACTUALLY in the We Are Mayhem trailer we DO see one of these guys!!! he’s on Maliwan’s side as the VHs are running across the bridge and im pretty sure that is Promethea!

The Best Good Parts of the Metal Opera Pt. I

As according to me

I’m doing it, folks. I’m going through every Avantasia album to tell you about the best parts in some very good music, as according to me, your benevolent host and hopeless metal-romantic. Starting tonight with the one that started it all: The Metal Opera!

Storyline: Hoping to exonerate his stepsister, who has been accused of witchcraft, a monk of the Dominican Order named Gabriel Laymann makes a deal with a druid: to save Anna, he must first help save the world of imagination. Gabriel agrees, and enters a world of elves and dwarves, of ancient evils and theocratic conspiracies - a world called Avantasia. And the rest is heavy metal history!

Fun facts and overview:

This is the first-ever Avantasia album, released in 2001.

The Metal Operas have a much more traditional power metal sound: crazy drums, high-flying guitar lines, a handful of ballads and a crunchy production value. So if that’s your thing, strap in!

All Avantasia albums are narrative but TMO1 is the only one with short musical/spoken word interludes.

This album was partially (if not entirely?) responsible for getting Michael Kiske back into the metal scene. Yay!

Just a reminder: this is NOT going to be a series of fancy smart person reviews, and is 100% a way for me to quarantine my unconditional love for music that I like. You may see a brief snippet of insight now and then but that’s, uh, no guarantee.

COMPETITION INTRO

Our world is changing.

Imagine Mumbai and Miami permanently underwater, hurricanes frequently clashing against Manhattan and Manila, devastating droughts in Los Angeles and London, and fires running rampant in Sydney and San Francisco.

A future like this currently occupies our imagination but inches closer to reality each day.

How will our built environment react to rising sea levels, extended droughts, climbing temperatures, and other symptoms of global warming? How can our buildings and cities prevent the severity of natural disasters, degrading air quality, melting ice caps, and climate change at large?

WARMING calls on students and professionals from the fields of architecture, planning, and design to submit projects that respond to our changing climate and the environment.

CHALLENGE

WARMING competition participants are asked to propose new or adapted architecture that addresses issues of global warming.

Participants are free to experiment and explore the subject – designs can be of any program, any scale, and on any site. Architecture may be building types such as homes, parks, skyscrapers, stadiums, schools, museums, libraries, transportation, multifamily housing, and more.

See how designers addressed our changing climate in last years WARMING Competition here.

Participants may propose strategies that prevent the rise of global warming or strategies that react to the changing world we will inhabit. Participants may also take a combined approach.

PREVENT – designs and strategies can address issues such as renewable energy, recycling, sustainable farming, alternative transportation, or many others.

REACT – designs and strategies can address issues such as sea-level rise, droughts, wilderness fires, severe weather, habitat destruction, or many others.
