The Lady and the Major - Part 1/3 // John "Bucky" Egan x OC

Summary: Major Bucky Egan is on leave in London, and what else is there to do than to drink, sing, have a good time, and... of course, ladies. But then he meets Liz, a Lady of the Court, and Bucky is immediately entangled in her net.

Warnings: Language, teasing, use of alcohol - soldiers being soldiers

A/N: Okay, wow... I thought today: "Uh, I have an idea for a OneShot with Bucky Egan," and now I'm sitting here with a three-part story. Jeeeeeez... Uh, but what you gonna do. (I've only seen the first two Episodes of MotA as of now, but... I just love Callum)

The Ritz, London, 1943

The opulent bar of the Ritz in London, brimming with the raucous laughter and chatter of soldiers on leave. The air is thick with smoke, jazz music fills the background, and the atmosphere is charged with the night's excitement.

Major John "Bucky" Egan, surrounded by a rowdy group of fellow American soldiers, is the life of the party. His laughter is loudest, his stories the most captivating, and his gaze roams freely, appreciative of the scenery—particularly the women who add a touch of glamour to the smoky room.

Bucky, with a glass of whiskey in hand, leans back, surveying the room with a smug grin. "Gentlemen," he boasts, "London's no match for a Yank with charm. Watch and learn."

His eyes, however, catch a sight that stops him mid-sentence—a vision of elegance seated across the bar. Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, unbeknownst to him, sits alone, her posture the epitome of grace, a long, slender cigarette holder elegantly poised in her hand. The soft glow of the bar lights catches her blonde hair and the sparkle in her blue eyes, making her seem almost ethereal.

Bucky's usual confidence wavers for a moment, his friends noticing the sudden change. "Well, I'll be damned... Who's that?" Bucky mutters, more to himself than anyone else.

One of the British soldiers, a man who has seen his fair share of high society, leans over, a knowing look in his eyes. "That, Yank, is Lady Elizabeth Cavendish. The Duke of Wellington's daughter. I'd tread carefully if I were you. She's out of your league."

Bucky's grin returns, cockier than before. "Out of my league? Buddy, there's no league I can't play in. Watch me."

With a swagger in his step, Bucky makes his way over to Elizabeth, his comrades watching eagerly, some with admiration, others with skepticism, and some with knowing faces.

"Evening, miss. Can I say you light up this room brighter than the London Blitz," he says cockily, letting his charm play.

Elizabeth doesn't even glance up from her drink at first, taking a slow drag from her cigarette. When she finally turns her gaze towards him, it's with an air of amusement. "And can I say that's the most American pickup line I've ever heard?"

Bucky, undeterred, flashes a grin. "Major John Egan, at your service. But for you... You can call me Bucky. And you are?"

Elizabeth finally offers him a small, knowing smile. "Elizabeth Cavendish. And I'm quite aware of who you are, Major Egan. Your reputation precedes you."

Bucky, leaning against the bar closer to Liz, his confidence seemingly unshaken. "Is that so? And what have you heard?"

Liz, taking another slow drag from her cigarette, eyes Bucky with a mixture of interest and challenge. "Oh, just that you're quite the charmer. A real ladies' man. Or so you believe."

The air between them crackles with a mix of tension and intrigue. Bucky, for once, finds himself having to work to maintain his usual smug demeanor. "And what about you, Lady Elizabeth? Do you enjoy games?"

Liz's smile widens, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Oh, Major, I don't just enjoy them. I excel at them. Care to play?"

The challenge hangs in the air, a silent dare that Bucky, despite the warnings and his better judgment, finds himself unable to resist. "You're on. Let the games begin."

As Bucky signals the bartender for another round of drinks, his fellow soldiers exchange glances, some shaking their heads, others betting amongst themselves on the outcome. What none of them realize is that in the game of seduction and wit, Liz is a master strategist, and Bucky might have just met his match.

Bucky leans closer, his confidence unwavering. "So, Liz, you don't mind me calling you Liz, right?" he starts, the smug smile never leaving his face, "I've flown some of the most dangerous missions over Germany, you know. But I must say, navigating this conversation with you feels like my most thrilling challenge yet."

Liz lets out a soft, amused laugh. "Major Egan, I've met many men who believe their war stories could sweep a girl off her feet. And maybe it actually does some. But it's going to take more than tales of aerial feats to impress me," she replies, her voice laced with a teasing sarcasm that only someone of her breeding and wit could perfect.

The night progresses, and with each drink, Bucky becomes more audacious, his hand finding its way to the small of Liz's back, a bold move that, in any other circumstance, would have guaranteed success. Liz, however, is not any woman he's encountered before. She plays along, leaning in as if captivated by his charm, her lips tantalizingly close to his, only to pull away at the last moment, leaving him wanting more.

Their conversation ebbs and flows, with Bucky regaling her with his exploits, each tale more daring than the last. Yet, Liz remains unimpressed, her blue eyes sparkling with amusement rather than awe. It's a dance they're both familiar with, but in this instance, Liz leads, her every move calculated to keep him on his toes.

As the night wears on, Liz finishes her drink, placing the glass delicately on the bar. She rises from her stool, the movement graceful and deliberate. "Well, Major, it has been... interesting," she says, her tone implying a myriad of things left unsaid.

Bucky, taken aback by her sudden desire to leave, scrambles to his feet. "Wait, Liz, why don't you stay for another drink? The night is still young, and I feel we've barely scratched the surface."

Liz turns to him, a sly smile playing on her lips. "I'm afraid I have other engagements to attend to, Major. But I must thank you for the entertainment," she teases, her gaze piercing through him with a challenge that silently says she's not one to be easily conquered.

As she walks away, Bucky watches, a mix of frustration and fascination written across his face. For the first time, he's encountered a woman who not only matches his wit but exceeds it, leaving him in uncharted territory. Liz, with her aristocratic poise and undeniable charm, has turned the tables on him, making it clear that if he wishes to pursue her, he's in for a game unlike any he's played before.

Returning to his comrades, Bucky's expression is a mix of irritation and resolve, a stark contrast to the confident swagger he had before approaching Liz. The British soldiers, having observed the entire exchange, can't help but wear smirks of "told you so" on their faces.

"Well, Major, looks like the ice queen has claimed another victim," one of the Brits comments, clapping Bucky on the shoulder with a laugh that's both sympathetic and mocking.

Bucky, undeterred, shoots back, "This isn't over. Not by a long shot."

Another British soldier chimes in, swirling his drink, "Mate, many have tried to climb that mountain. From viscounts to earls, not a single one has reached the summit. Lady Cavendish is... well, she's a fortress."

"Yeah, heard she loves to make sport of men, seeing who can try and fail the most spectacularly," adds a third, his tone laced with a mix of admiration and warning.

One of Bucky's American friends, attempting to find a solution, suggests, "Did you pull the pilot card? Chicks love pilots." The suggestion hangs in the air until another British soldier, who had been quietly listening, interjects, "Her brother's Captain Edward Cavendish, Royal Air Force war hero. Your pilot card might as well be a library card."

The revelation doesn't dampen Bucky's spirits; if anything, it fuels his determination. His jaw sets firmly, the challenge now more personal than ever. "So, she's used to high-flyers, huh? Well, she hasn't met anyone like me. I'm not just any pilot; I'm Major Bucky Egan. And I don't give up that easily."

The group looks at him, a mix of skepticism and intrigue in their eyes. They know Bucky for his tenacity, his charm, and his unwillingness to back down from a challenge. But Lady Elizabeth Cavendish is not just any challenge—she's a high-stakes game that many have lost.

As the night winds down and the group disperses, Bucky's mind races with plans. He knows winning over someone like Lady Cavendish won't be easy, but he's always loved a challenge. The thought of her, with her piercing blue eyes and that untouchable aura, only makes him more determined. He's ready to prove that he's not like the others, that he's someone who stands out, even in a crowd of heroes.

The stage is set for a captivating game of wit, charm, and strategy. Bucky's resolve and Liz's cunning promise a tale of intrigue, where each move could either draw them closer or push them further apart.

In the soft morning light filtering through the hotel's dining room windows, Bucky and his fellow soldiers are halfway through their breakfast, the air filled with the light-hearted banter typical of men who've faced much together. The sudden approach of a concierge, bearing the unmistakable posture of formal importance, silences the table. With a discreet cough to announce his presence, the concierge presents a silver platter to Bucky.

Bucky, eyebrows raised in surprise, picks up the envelope resting on the platter. The envelope itself is a work of art, the calligraphy on the front flawlessly executed, hinting at the significance of its contents. His name, "Major John Egan, US Air Force," is inscribed with elegant flourishes that speak of a bygone era of meticulous attention to detail.

As he carefully opens the envelope, the anticipation among his comrades is palpable. They watch as Bucky's initial confusion shifts to an understanding smile, a silent acknowledgment of the ongoing saga that had captivated them since last night. He pulls out the invitation, and it reads:

Major John Egan,

It is with great pleasure that Arthur Cavendish, Duke of Wellington, and Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Wellington, extend to you an invitation to a gala being held at our family estate, Wellington House, on the evening of this day.

This event will assemble distinguished individuals from various sectors of British and Allied societies in a celebration of unity and resilience in these challenging times.

His gaze flicks over me, rapid and yet still too long, as if it can bore right through me—strip me to skin and bone in one lewd sweep. I back away, all too aware of the iron on my leg that foretells of my defeat if he decides he wants to do more than merely look.

“What do you want?” My mouth has gone dry, but I don’t dare reapproach the bed, where I left my cup of water on Sloane’s tray. Don’t want to close the distance between me and Munk.

“Why, I brought you something, courtesy of Mr. Regent.” He smiles—sly, salacious.

Oops I couldn't decide which to choose so, uh, here's another seven.

“What are you staring at, sunshine?” He snaps the book closed, and the sound makes me jump. “Like what you see?”

“If you’ve delivered your stupid fucking book,” I say, “leave it here and get out.”

“You sure like to order people around,” he says. “You know you’re the one chained up like a dog, right?”

“Get the fuck out.”

;; OF ALL THE SUPPORTS TO LAY. ME OUT FLAT RIGHT NOW-

IT’S FUCKING LORENZ?! Hi, hello, Lorenz is ridiculous and I can’t say I hate him. He certainly rubs me a certain way at times, but he has grown on me immensely ( and I say this needing people to understand my least favorite character in the game, prior to beating it, was Felix, who is actively one of my favorite now ).

But just branching off what I was just saying in my last ramble post!

“I am present, yes. I was just so shocked to hear you voice your anxieties that I struggled to find words.”

I was just saying to Lyn that Claude is so on his back foot this game, he has no choice but to play a card he hates playing: vulnerability. Sincerity- not that he isn’t an earnest or well intended person, but again, being vulnerable is being unsafe to him, so the fact that he felt he owed Lorenz, of all people, that level of direct earnestness and Lorenz is shocked by it? Claude has worked so hard to maintain this facade of being in control and certain and confident in all respects that when he tells Lorenz that he has “this lingering worry [he] just can’t shake” or that “[he] feels like [he’s] constantly walking this tightrope with no clear end in sight” ???????? HOLY CRAP that’s so from his gut that Lorenz, and myself, are left agape.

In the base game, Claude had time. He had the time with his allies in the monastery, he had time with his grandfather in the Alliance, and he just had the ability to bolster his confidence and understanding of those around him to such an extent that he didn’t need to worry about playing himself defensively. In this game, he has to be more direct and almost forcefully sincere because he doesn’t have the rapport, doesn’t have the title of “Master Tactician” touted around the land in his advantage. He’s just. . . Claude von Reigan, who hopefully can keep everyone’s head screwed on straight long enough that they can rout those trying to kill them with the cunning and worldliness he’s scraped and bowed to get so far.

It’s just fascinating how he’s so similar and yet so different in playing his cards. Claude is malleable and resourceful, but he’s not disingenuous or unkind. And I adore that.

EDIT: AND THE FACT THAT HE HAS THE GALL TO TURN AROUND AND SAY HIS SINCERITY IS ONE OF HIS SCHEMES?!?!?!? DON’T YOU REALIZE THAT’S A HUGE THING TO HIM AND SINCERITY IS HARD BECAUSE EVERYONE THINKS HE’S LYING JUST LISTEN TO HIM GOOOOSH At least he backtracks on being upset ‘cause jeeeeeez hurt my feelings. . . and Claude didn’t want to be that genuine, which hurts my feelings. I thought I learned my lesson last time to finish the scene but nooooooo

The Sympathizer! Last few days in May 2022

Ho my god. Ho. My god!

Jeeeeeez. Louise. How. Why. Where. I don’t know. I finally finished The Sympathizer after what feels like 10 years because the literary style was too advanced for my low-IQ brain. Just kidding. I’m smart. It was just a challenging read. But, I thank Viet Thanh Nguyen for giving me such a great challenge because I loved learning all those new, giant words which I will one day use in my own writing. For example, I walked down the tarmac. YAY!

Anyways! I am here to report on today’s updates as well as a small Betty book report. As for social news, we are in a horrendous pattern of shootings in the US. It is pretty scary going to large gatherings at this point, so I am happy to be leaving to Vietnam in November. Hopefully, I don’t come back because I’ll be so thrilled! I don’t know. Benny left this morning and I don’t like writing about him on my blog because I feel like it is unwanted, romantic content. But I love him. And relationships are hard. Super hard. Other than that, I am the closest to normal I’ve been since the first day of EDC, so all good news on my end. Plus, my apartment is tidy and I made okra, mushroom soup!

On to the better things. The Sympathizer. I think what took me so long to read this book is that the writing style was harder to digest, but in all the best ways. It was a rigorous read since I haven’t had academic writing styles to read since almost two years ago from today. Wow. That’s insane. I used to think I was young, but I can officially say I am old.

I want to talk about five aspects of the book that I really enjoyed.

The writing style that provided an insane amount of engagement (when I had the time to indulge) I had to read the first two or three chapters like three times. I’ve already known this about myself, but when I start a new book and usually a new author, it takes a while for me to get used to their writing style. A while as in I usually have to read the first few pages a couple times before I get into the jive of the book. For this novel, I had to read the first chapters three times before having a full understanding of what was going on. This is not due to Nguyen’s writing at the least, for the book itself is extremely well-written and I can only wish to be half as smart as him one day. This was because I already had a very murky understanding of what the Vietnam War was about. I wasn’t aware of all the groups and the sides and perspectives, apart from my parent’s own. In the rereading sessions, I had to look up what Viet Cong meant, what the National Liberation Front was, and even watch Youtube crash courses on Vietnamese history. Once I got this all underway, I finally had the context to dive in and start a fiction adventure with the spy. It was insane. I remember taking three flights to Belfast and falling into this book head first at the back of the plane while everyone began their slumber for the red eye flight. Bon and Bon’s family were so close to the plane. I couldn’t stop turning the pages! I felt that way through the murder scenes and all the moments that were thrilling to read through, because they felt so real and close to what could have happened.

Rich and raw in historical references When I say I didn’t know much about my own family’s history, I mean I did not know squat. The most I knew was from Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do, the graphic novel, and that was already mindblowing for me in so many ways. This book did an incredible job at writing to the commandant in such a specific and authentic form that it helped me understand the missing holes I had in my knowledge about the war. I can’t say I am an expert, but I feel really grateful that this book was written so authentically for the author himself, but also for Vietnamese-Americans like me, I found so much satisfaction in the cultural references that never felt forced, they felt automatic and seamless.

Insidious parallelism, symmetry, and symbolism When reading this book, I feel as though I only soaked up what was on the surface. What actually happened. What the book was telling me, word for word. But, after watching a few interviews with Nguyen and book reviews online, I’m learning that there is so much more that meets the eye that he did with the characters themselves. The fact that the main character was divided had been a symbol for the country of Vietnam itself. The phrase the agent yelled when asked her name. This in addition to the references he had to work with. All of the events that occurred with his characters like Sonny being the journalist that had to die, the falling in love with Ms. Mori, the movie set experience - all of these were events that reflected so much of the war in their own ordinary way. I loved that this book was intentional in the scenes and climaxes and downfalls to parallel the history of Vietnam itself. It reminds me of art pieces at museums that have a collective image of pain and love and honesty and violence, all brought into one image that was not the event itself, but symbolic as an entire renewed, recreated piece.

I realized this after writing about the last one, but I loved the humanity in the narrator’s story Books that are able to give me the shoes of the narrator amaze me, because they help me see what the protagonist is going through. Feeling like you don’t belong is an experience I relate to and so reading about Man’s experience and the narrator’s experience with his racial background was relatable. The deep yearning for someone who he is prohibited to love, Lana. Even the story about the squid! So intense and yucky, but in the best way, because it was so humane and vulnerable. Nguyen said the protagonist is all the things society despises - an alcoholic, a womanizer, a murderer, a spy, a traitor at the end of the day, yet we as readers are able to root for him and understand him in ways that probably make us uncomfortable too. There is a shamelessness in the protagonist’s voice that I appreciate. It is an unspoken awareness that he is human and because of that reason, everything he’s doing is valid.

I guess the last thing is (and there’s probably more now that I’m really getting into it) I appreciate the questioning of societal values, morals, of perspectives, of who’s right and wrong, of what is supposed to be, how it’s supposed to be. I mean, this is how I live my life. This is how I’ve been living for the past couple of years. Operating in question mode. I am the optimistic skeptic of my own world and I enjoy asking why? I really like Viet Thanh Nguyen because he seems like a non-yes man. And not even in a way that he’s cynical or unlikeable, but he just seems like someone who is constantly listening and observing, and knowing what he’s about. He doesn’t think he’s always right, he doesn’t think that he has all the answers, because he’s humble, but he knows that life is not in black and white and he’ll stand up for what he believes in. In a lot of ways, the protagonist is a questioner. He is the sympathizer and empathizes with those around him. He’s always asking what is right and what is wrong, a question I encounter frequently in my life. Even when he decides not to stand up for the agent during the police interrogation incident, he feels guilty for not taking action. This ties together with how there are aspects of humanity (making mistakes, and sometimes terrible ones), while also going through life reflecting and questioning. I love that there is questioning and constant analysis. He’s a little philosopher. What is life without a little or a lot of questioning? :)

Although this book did not give me a very clear and direct answer about how I should view the Vietnam war or refugees or Americans, it did gift me the space and affirmation to reflect and question. I feel as though I left the book being open to new perspectives about the war, about my family’s experiences, and also being less judgmental to what I don’t know simply because there’s labels on people or places.

The Sympathizer changed the way I see Vietnam now, Vietnamese refugee experiences, and surely when I go for the first time in November. I look forward to having a critical lens on all perspectives and to keep my mind open to all experiences, since none are the same. I am grateful to have read such a wonderful novel that challenged me and gave me the space to think deeply about myself, “nothingness”, what it means in my life to be a revolutionary and to understand that behind all the blame and finger pointing and war that we are all just humans at the end of the day trying to survive. I’m excited to keep writing and learning! Really great novel!

Hi, so I just finished the new season today! I have so many thoughts, the last few episodes felt kind of rushed? I wished they had gone about the whole situation between Gray and Carm at the end differently. More so on seeing them reunited. My biggest question, is why was he so quick on going back to VILE? He knew what they were capable of yes, was it to feed his criminal impulses? Why did ever want to steal in the first place? What led him to that conclusion and how did he learn of VILE? I was keen on seeing more of his backstory, and still need time to let the story simmer so I can analyze it more. It's just confusing. I guess it's just because the show ended that I feel so bittersweet y'know. What do you think Carmen would've done after they all disbanded? How could she leave them so quickly after she just got back to Team Carmen in the end? Besides wanting to see her mother. I was hoping they'd at least stay together.

i think that more than a few people feel that ( the knee jerk incredulity at her just leaving them a note and yeeting was real)

like disclaimer again: i do love carmen and this season this is just expanding on some little ??’s

on gray and “thinking gray.”: I was also feeling the lackluster on the payoff motivation wise for gray returning to VILE ( which was definitely needed as he was the secret weapon needed to finally get evil carmen back and at least partially inevitable due to ownership of the choices yadadadada )but like when he finally got his memories back he just repeated some things that i never really doubted. that gray did this of his own free will, he probably is of a lower empathy in general (which does not mean incapable of caring and doing the right thing. just that..~~~), that he regretted hurting carmen. in s1 he says his primary motivation as making more money and i was like”mmhmm fits.” being a thief and all and why not since they hadn’t introduced the big “needs to be able to tie up loose ends.” as a operative qualifier to anyone, including some of the recruits there. the only newer thing was his video that he seeked them out. which is interesting and all but sets him up as a go-getter so its so confusing that he’d choose to return to VILE ...a place where he was hurt and is so freaking selfish with what capers they choose to pursue. i kinda went on a tangent on another post that there is a theme of using a false sense of bonding to give them a little more loyalty which is like really heavy considering that means offering a “home” to what looks like operatives who might all be orphans but i don’t think it was highlighted enough to say “HEY YO” even tho GRAY LOOKS SO TIRED TO LEARN ABOUT HIS PAST WITH VILE

its really interesting because of the 3 people who had access to him/nature we got; carmen who only encouraged his desire to help (for the kiddos, for her safety, for assuring her that they were in...whatever... together, and make sure that they weren’t being secret spy jerks) ACME who got like...0 usefulness (riperonis ma guys), and VILE with maelstrom just hammering home all his shadier deeds with “YEAH THIS IS YOU.” AND HIM JUST ACCEPTING IT AFTER SITTING FOR A LONG AF TIME ALONE.

and when this was happening I was thinking about this analysis from another fandom about characters who resign to the law of the strong which could have been a reason for why gray doesn’t seem to hold the consequences for his failure against VILE even though he really should. (if they bothered but listen-)

its something that happens when characters choose to live in worlds they know are unfair, know that they choose to lie and steal and cheat, and thus should not be surprised or hurt when it happens to them in return. which of course lead to them not knowing where to draw the line on what happens to them...and i mean this in like some narratives usually go (hahaha no thats messed up please gtfo being treated like that is not ok and in allowing others to define your limits you are whittling yourself away). and they decide to live in resignation that. i am capable of bad... so i AM bad. (I am that guy. i’ve always been that guy) and makes them absolutely ripe for the (but you’ve been good . you can choose to be better. it won’t erase the wrongs of the past but it will make for a better future)

but that still leaves exploration of “WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE BY THE LAW OF THE STRONG??” and you know...not having anyone to rely on, poverty, or what was simple rebelliousness turning to darker and darker paths, are some easy reasons to put a spotlight on maybe our operatives having depth and like..arcs. especially any of those reasons combined. ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY’RE WHAT VILE CONSISTENTLY IS SHOWN OFFERING. (shadowsan really is their s-tier character huh)

which i really thought this show would go for when a shivering brunt who is loyal and protective asked if she was really going to be left behind or remember how unsympathetic most of them seemed to see carmen chloroformed because “she did interrupt our heist.” meaning that they understand this world. probably have understood it for longer than anyone should. (antonio being content as a “pawn” is the tenant in my head today) and why shouldn’t more money be important. or honestly how simple it was to accept that someone would just need more money.

with gray they introduced that he could be good and he could be bad but like leaned into “no all that niceness was fake and he’s bad.” due to the hyper specificity of the mind wipe apparently? which also leans into really flat interpretation of evil!carmen (i just mean that there is a lot there ...) meaning theres no really exploration of him and more of a judgment (even though he’s shown to be kind, snarky, and upfront, as himself without a mind wipe.) and then we wait...

the pacing of the last 2 episodes: adrenaline bebe!!! but also there were so many concepts being introduced and resolved and skimmed past so that it is a little confusing at some conclusions. like the scene you’re talking about where carmen just leaves a note and ghosts is like 30 seconds and thats a lot to unpack because ?? i’m really thinking that it might have been insinuating that carmen left them the pen specifically to give them a new home to wait for her because she was going on that little break like she planned (and they knew was the endgoal) because it was behind her note and presumably placed by her but because i was focusing on the letter goodbye like ??? i thought for some reason that it was zack saying he would now like to try ACME because HE thought of it and i was like ??when did you consider this?? and 3rd watch i was finally “ahhh ok ok i think i get it.”

another bitten off scene i think might have been when gray in his first mission is already exhibiting signs of going...”huh this is not good.”

from stopping carmen from unprofessionalism to seeing that new carmen is willing to up and leave the group for mental gymnastics instead of relying on them 100% to going to the ferris wheel where he DEFINITELY SAW HER TRYING TO KILL A CIVILIAN since it showed his reaction after ivy’s. and then it turn to team red because how they feel about it definately matters more than gray but its also so easy to miss that choosing to have gray witness that as the start of what makes him turn himself in (maybe this is just a possible interpretation and its midnight ok)

evil carmen! lost her empathy. ok. so then like thats a static judgment about how they’re gonna make her do bad stuff and she still absolutely cares about her history and VILE still needed to enforce bonding and giving her memories that they comforted her and gave her her coat so thats why she cares about it and her anger at betrayal and sense of loss that she still throws right in shadowsans face when “evil”

carmen thought she crossed a personal line?? like jeeeeeez that’s 6 months of crossing lines and the most recent and horrifying one happened like not even a minute ago and then 5 seconds later we get chief and her reconciling because yes it needed to happen so we’re not gonna address how traumatizing it was or

VILE JUST WENT ALL THE WAY DOWN HUH??

and all these things are important and have the groundwork for happening but man they just happen one after the other and its like

before moving on to the next thing and like let me breathe omg

and yeah that means that so many people were left confused because the show about family (carmen’s family that SHE built ) seemed to disband for carmen to go to see her mother at last alone, shadowsan to go to his brother and a heartbroken pair of red heads to join ACME

and we get a time gap before reuniting but only a few seconds to decide if reuniting was the plan all along(the pressure point)

and there is a lot of actual IN TIME that is broad strokes that many people have already picked whats going to haunt them that wasn’t explored more...

TLDR; i get it on both counts (gray and rushed)! glad there was some sweet in your bittersweet and since canon definitely had team red in the same place they absolutely reunited and moved back into the shop and carmen talked to them about how great her mom is and planned a dinner

If anyone was wondering how master's applications are going, this one i have to complete tomorrow comes with a 9 PAGES LONG hints and tips for writing a motivation letter! Like i don't even have the motivation to read this dammit lmao. And it's so dramatic and patronizing, like they don't want excellent students they only want OUTSTANDING students. It says shit like "Are you a machine? A you a poet? Are you a bureaucrat? You should come across as a scientist." Even more ridiculously they say "A single cliché in your essay can be enough to remove you from the list of candidates." JEEEEEEZ There's a whole bunch of instead of this say this exanples and then it says you should avoid the verb to be and other boring verbs such as to make to have to do BITCH WHAT?!?

So, as far as lying to get well-paying jobs working for rich people, I wasn’t even remotely mad at the son or the sister. Like, the son was actually kinda qualified for the job, even though he didn’t have the credentials to prove it, so like, I ain’t mad at him for forging some documents and lying about his education lmao. The sister was a bit shadier, I guess, lying about being a psychologist, which like, that wasn’t necessary lmfao. But I still wasn’t too mad, bc hey, a girl’s gotta get paid.

BUT THEN! When they framed the driver for being a perv??? And then got the housekeeper fired by triggering her allergies and then convincing Mrs. Park that she had fucking tuberculosis??? That was vile! Like gosh! It’s one thing to lie your way into a job, but it’s another thing entirely to GET ANOTHER WORKING CLASS PERSON FIRED so you can take their job!! Which like, I mean, I guess being broke can make people resort to hella unsavory things, but woooow. That was sooooo messy.

But the whole time, I’m enjoying the wacky shenanigans of this family of con artists living it up in a mansion that isn’t theirs, getting drunk, making fun of the rich folks for not having a clue that they’re being duped, and I’m just having myself a grand ol’ time.

BUT THEN OMFG WHEN THE OLD HOUSEKEEPER SHOWS UP TO GET HER FUCKING HUSBAND OUT OF THE BASEMENT???? WHAT??? LMFAO WHYYYYYY!!!! WHAT IS HE DOING THERE!!! AND WHY DOES HE SEEM TO HAVE A CREEPY OBSESSION WITH MR. PARK??? I literally just. Don’t even know what to say about that lmfao ew ew EW.

But like wooooooow that scene where they were hiding under the table while Mr. and Mrs. Park were snuggling on the couch and like... Mr. Park starts talking about how the dad has a weird smell... he said he smells like a fucking boiled rag! A BOILED RAG, RANDI!!!! That’s! So MEAN! A boiled rag!!! Not just a rag, not even a dirty rag, but a BOILED rag. Boiled. BOILED. I can’t. I CANNOT!!! This poor man had to listen to someone say he smells like a BOILED RAG!!! I felt so sad for him omfg!!

And then when they finally sneak out of the house and return home to find THEIR ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD FLOODED IN SEWAGE??? And they go in their lil home to try to salvage anything at all, but it’s just. Ruined and disgusting!! :( And like, jeez, the daughter broke my fucking heart with the way she so quickly resigned herself to abject apathy. Like. There is not one single thing she could do to make the situation even a little bit better. She’s helpless. She’s watching her home become a literal cesspool. Shit is exploding out of the toilet and she just fucking accepts it, and smokes a cigarette, and chills on the toilet while shit spews all around her. Like jeeeeeez. That scene Got To Me. That was the single saddest moment of the film for me. And the fact that after all of that happened they had to go back and work for this rich family??? Heartbreaking. You lose everything in the blink of an eye because you were too poor to be able to afford to live somewhere where there’s lower risk of a catastrophe happening, meanwhile you have to smile your way through working for filthy rich people who have probably never had a reason to even worry about losing their home.

And then goshhhh when the son decides to get rich and buy the house??? And the dad is just being a creep living in the basement?? That was some pathological shit omg. And it made me so saaaAAAAD like wow, there really are people out there who want so badly to be rich that it’s like a legit fairy-tale-like fantasy for them. Like, they just go and stare longingly at big houses. Which like. On the one hand, I can sorta imagine how poverty might make someone long for exorbitant wealth, buuuut personally, I can’t imagine legitimately wanting that kind of lifestyle, let alone longing for it and feeling depressed about not having it. I mean, I can see, at most, how it would be cool to spend a few nights in a luxury suite with room service and fancy showers and plush robes. But like. I don’t need to be wealthy for that lmao I just need to save up a few grand to treat myself to a lil fancy vacation maybe once every few years. It’s not at allllllll something I value enough that I would want it at my fingertips every day. Like, I really don’t feel even remotely envious of wealthy people beyond the fact that they don’t need to worry about the cost of food or housing or health care. Really, I’m more likely to pity them for various reasons that I’m currently too unfocused to articulate. But yeah like. The fact that people are so often and so intensely encouraged to aspire toward obscene wealth is sick and, especially when coupled with poverty that’s manufactured and built into a society, it can make people so spiritually/emotionally ill. :(

But oh oh!

Also??? I was surprised how much I appreciated the portrayal of the rich family??? I mean yeah they were a tiny bit elitist but they were mostly just a nice, normal family. In media that depicts dynamics between rich people and poo people, I’m so used to the rich people being portrayed as snobby and evil and selfish. But these folks weren’t any of those things. They were just normal people. Normal people who have a few personality flaws that stem from being accustomed to being able to have whatever they want exactly when they want it, but like. They were still nice, kind people for the most part. A loving husband and wife who are invested in using their affluence to make sure their children can thrive.

Which I mean like, I don’t mean to suggest that ~oh wahhh, rich people are unfairly portrayed in the media~ or anything like that bc that would be dumb lmfao. But in this specific context, I liked that even though they weren’t ~good guys,~ they definitely were not villains. Just! Wealthy folks who are mostly just minding their own business and throwing their money around!

You wake up earlier than you had in the last few days. You roll onto your side, gently touching Hoseoks sleeping face making him smile in his sleep. You sit up, stretching your arms over your head and yawning silently. You let your feet fall out of your bed, soon feeling the soft rug between your toes. You smile, today is going to be a great day! You get up and tiptoe to the variety of bags which hold your many presents to carry them out of the room and into the library.

The house is silent when you open the bedroom door, everyone must still be asleep. You tiptoe to the library, holding your breath the whole time. Once you are finally in the safety of the room you take a deep breath.

“That was some next level agent shit right now”, you whisper to yourself, feeling much cooler than what was necessary in this situation. You sit down on the floor to pull out each of your presents and lay them onto the floor right in front of you. You reach behind you to grab for the wrapping paper before remembering that you had left it in the living you. You groan rubbing your temples.

“Now I can go down”, you sigh, rising to your feet to start your mission. You slowly open the door, glancing around the second floor first before you decide that it is safe for you to leave. You rush down the hallway and the stairs and only stop when you reach the bags filled with wrapping paper. You grab the prettiest-looking paper before sprinting up the stairs and back into the library again.

You fall down on the floor, sighing contently now that you can finally start with wrapping your presents. You normally hate wrapping presents you always manage to make the edges look patchy. But today luck was with you and you manage to wrap your present just how one would find them in a storybook. You grin down at your finished presents feeling proud, your heart beating excitedly in your chest.

“Oh shit, hey Y/N”, Taehyungs voice makes your head snap into the direction of the door. He is standing in the aisle with three big paper bags hidden behind his back and a roll of wrapping paper in his hand. “I didn’t think that someone would already be awake”, he stutters, his cheeks turning red from being caught.

“I can leave if you want. I’m already finished with wrapping my presents”, you tell him, stuffing the finished presents back into your bags before jumping to your feet.

“Thank you sweetheart”, he smiles walking to you trying his hardest not to flash the bags he was holding. “Can you by the way not look back when you leave? It would ruin the surprise”, he asks to which you nod.

“Of course handsome don’t worry. Have fun, if you want you can join me in the kitchen later”, you say before kissing him goodbye and storming out of the library.

The living room is still empty when you reach it, but you notice that two rolls of wrapping paper were missing. So someone else must already be awake. You lay the presents underneath the tree, smiling happily at the finished picture in front of you. Now Christmas is actually here!

Your stomach suddenly rumbles, reminding you that you in fact still needed to eat something. You decide to get breakfast ready, the guys will probably wake up very soon and you want to surprise them. Why not, it’s Christmas after all. You decide to go with some scrambled eggs and toast, just something you know that everyone would like and wouldn’t be too stressful to make. You get the eggs from the fridge before looking around the kitchen for the glass bowl which you saw Seokjin use a few days ago. You are able to find it in the cupboard underneath the oven and then you are good to go. You throw six eggs into the bowl before seasoning it with some salt and a dash of milk, a tip that Yoongis mum once told would make the eggs especially tasty. You heat the oil in a pan, swinging your hips to the sudden music in the living room. Wait! Music? You turn around, Jungkook is grinning at you with his Bluetooth speaker in his hands, which was playing some upbeat Christmas song at the moment.

“Good morning pumpkin”, he smiles, putting the speaker down on the coffee table before walking to you. He presses a kiss to your cheek ending it with a loud smack of his lips. “Did you sleep well?” he asks wrapping his arms around your waist.

“I did and you?” you giggle running your fingertips over the skin of his arms.

“I did eventhough I couldn’t fall asleep until 4, I was so excited because of today”, he tells you whilst peppering your cheek with kisses. You giggle, his breath is tickling you ever so lightly and soon your eyes fall closed, your whole body melting into his touch.

“Guys I think something is burning”, Taehyung says. He had come into the kitchen to put the finished presents underneath the tree and help you cooking when he saw the pan in front of you steam.

“Oh no the oil” you yell, ribbing yourself out of Jungkooks grasp to remove the hot oil from the stove. “Great, now I need to let it cool down a bit. Thanks Tae for warning me”, you say sending Taehyung a sweet smile.

“Don’t mention it sweetheart”, he grins, pouring water into the water cooker to make some tea.

“How can we help you pumpkin?” Jungkook asks already getting some cutlery and plates for the table.

“Someone could make some toast and coffee also someone needs to set the table”, you tell them and they instantly spring into action.

“I’ll go make the food and coffee”, Taehyung says already getting the toast from the cupboard.

“Then I will set the table”, Jungkook announces before storming to the dining table with staked plates in his hands.

Soon the others join one by one, all of them packed to the brim with the freshly wrapped presents ready to be put under the Christmas tree. You decide to meet up in the living room once you have eaten and washed yourself to finally decorate the tree and get the food ready for tonight. So after an hour you are back in the living room, all of you wearing your most beautiful clothes. You had decided to go for the black dress and had paired it with some red stockings, which you had once bought for one of your many role plays. You had put on some red lipstick on your lips and kept the other make-up very simple. Your boyfriend had chosen to go with some jeans and colorful sweaters, safe for Taehyung who went for suit pants and a red dress shirt.

“Just for your information I will not be cooking today unless you want it to taste like shit”, Taehyung says already walking to the tree with Namjoon following close by.

“I totally agree with you Tae”, Seokjin chuckles.

“Then I want to help Taehyung too”, you say, grabbing the closest hand to you and dragging the person to the tree with you.

“I assume that I am helping too”, Yoongi chuckles intertwining his fingers with yours the moment you had touched him.

“Fine then I want to help hyung”, Jimin says to which both Hoseok and Jungkook agree with a nod of their heads.

“Wooow sweetheart the decoration is beautiful”, Taehyung gasps pulling out some ball ornaments from one of the many bags scattered all over the floor. He musters it for a second before turning to tree and hanging it onto one of the branches.

“Did we do a good job at choosing the ornaments?” you ask, taking three ball ornaments into your hands and distributing them all over the tree.

“You really did princess, but I didn’t expect anything different from you. You have amazing taste after all I mean look at your boyfriends”, Yoongi says sending you a wink.

“Jeeeeeez never say that again”, you groan rolling your eyes.

“I’m proud of you Yoongi!” Seokjin calls from the kitchen, finger gunning at the younger man.

“You both are a disgrace to this family”, Namjoon groans dramatically, cracking all of you up.

Soon you turn silent all of you immersed in your work. The tree turns out even more beautiful than you had expected it to. The ornaments go perfectly with each other, the colorful snowmen or Santas added color to the otherwise red ornaments. You even managed to not break one single ornament, all of you feeling rather proud about it. But soon another problem appears. Hanging the fairy lights and star on top of the tree!

“I don’t think we have a latter here”, Taehyung says after having returned from the cellar to look for one.

“And how are we supposed to get the star and the fairy lights on top of the tree then?” you ask feeling sad already. Now the tree will never look perfect.

“I have an idea!” Namjoon suddenly yells. He had watched you struggle for a few moments before he had finally thought of the perfect solution. You watch him run to you before kneeling down in front of you.

“What are you doing?” you ask confused.

“Get on my shoulders” he explains looking up at you.

“You are a genius Joonie” you grin before sitting comfortably on his shoulders. He raises to his feet, not once complaining about you being too heavy before taking the few steps to the tree.

“Here princess”, Yoongi says handing you the beginning of the fairy lights. You thank him before starting to wrap them around the top of the tree until Yoongi is finally able to grab them and continue your work.

“Are you still okay Namjoon?” you ask, patting the crown of his head.

“Of course”, he says eventhough his voice starts to sound a bit strained. “Just tell me where to go next”, he adds before jumping a bit so you would sit better on his shoulders again after having slipped down a bit.

“To the front of the tree again and Taehyung can you hand me the star right in front of you?” you tell him pointing at the golden star on the coffee table. Taehyung rushes to the table and hands you the star as quick as possible. You thank him before stretching out your arms as far as possible

“Just few more millimeters Joonie”, you grunt trying your hardest to reach the upper most branch.

“I’m already literally standing inside of the tree”, he tells you with closed eyes so the branches wouldn’t stick into his eyes.

“Wait guys I can help!” Jungkook suddenly says. Soon you feel yourself getting lifted up even higher making you squeal. The grip around your legs tightens and you look down to see what is going on. Jungkook had wrapped his arms around Namjoons waist before hoisting both him and you up. His tongue was sticking out of his mouth, his face contorted in concentration.

“Holy shit”, you pant feeling scared for your life all of a sudden. You look up before reaching out to grab the branch. “Oh my god I got!” you announce your finger finally touching the tree. You stick the star onto the branch before telling Jungkook that he can let you down again.

“Thank god”, he groans letting Namjoon fall back onto his feet again, “You guys are heavy”, he whines massaging his aching arms.

“It wasn’t my idea Kook”, Namjoon scoffs, slowly kneeling down so you can crawl off his shoulders.

“I really appreciate it babyboy thank you” you smile, before pressing a kiss Jungkooks cheek. He grins, feeling proud now that you had praised him.

“Wooooow guuuys the tree is beautiful”, Hoseok says marveling the finished tree with a big smile.

“Let’s turn the lights on now”, Jimin says, stopping his work for a moment to go into the living room.

“Wait for me I want to see it too”, Seokjin says whilst limping next to you.

Yoongi kneels down next to the socket with the plug in his hands. He looks at you, “Are you ready?” he asks making all of you nod. He plugs it into the socket and the tree instantly lights up.

“Wooooooow”, all of you gasp looking at the tree with happy eyes.

“That’s more beautiful than I had imagined it to be”, Taehyung smiles clapping his hands excitedly.

“It really is”, you agree smiling fondly.

“Can we leave it plugged in the whole time now? It looks so beautiful”, Yoongi asks the rest of you, starring at the tree in awe.

“Of course we will keep it plugged in. We would be stupid if we didn’t”, Seokjin says already walking back to the kitchen to finish his cooking, “by the way guys now that you are finished, you can finally help us cook”, he adds already kneading through the filling for the turkey again.

“Sure tell us what to do”, Namjoon says pulling up the sleeves of his dark blue sweater.

“Someone can set the table for later and I think that Hoseok needs some help with the potatoes”, he tells you.

“I’ll go set the table, because yeah well, you already know why I won’t be cooking today”, Taehyung says rummaging through the cutlery drawer.

“Then I will help Tae”, Namjoon says before getting the plates from the cupboard.

“Hobi, how can I help you?” you ask now that having to cook stuck to you.

“Can you peel them?” he asks pointing at the big pile of unpeeled potatoes. You nod before finally getting to work.

“Then I will make the eggnog”, Yoongi announces already looking for a recipe on his phone. Once he has found the perfect one he gets to work, whisking the eggs and pouring the brandy in a big pot to make it boil.

“I am already soo hungry”, Hoseok whines once the turkey starts to smell delicious in the oven. He rubs his rumbling stomach pouting hard.

“Me too bro”, Namjoon groans letting his head fall back onto the headrest of the couch.

“We just need to wait fifteen more minutes and then we can finally eat”, Seokjin says, watching the turkey roast in the oven.

“How about we bypass the time by drinking some eggnog?” you suggest, not waiting for an answer and already pouring each of them a glass. You place them on a big tray before carrying it into the living room. They each grab one glass, humming contently whilst taking the first sip.

“That tastes amazing hyung”, Jungkook gasps with big eyes.

“Thanks”, Yoongi mumbles, smiling shyly.

“By the way I nearly forgot!” Jimin suddenly screams up, he jumps to his feet running to the last unopened bag in the living room. He pulls out the matching sweaters and headbands, distributing them between you, “We got matching sweaters so we will look cute on pictures”, he grins, undressing himself before pulling the new sweater over his head and putting the reindeer antlers on his head.

“Do we really?” Yoongi groans eyeing the Santa hat which had been placed into his lap.

“Yes we do hyung, now go on and change”, Jimin insists sending him a warning glare.

“Fine”, Yoongi groans before changing into the sweater, “okay fair enough we actually look cute”, he confesses once all of you are wearing your sweaters and headbands.

“See I told you”, Jimins grins pulling out his phone, “sooooo now that we are at it, can we take the picture for my Instagram now?” he asks with a cute voice.

“Of course”, Taehyung tells him whilst pulling Jungkook and Seokjin closer to him.

“Great! Okay now everybody look here and smile”, Jimin orders you holding the camera up so everyone would be on the picture. After the twelfth picture he is finally happy with the result now smiling into his phone whilst putting some filter on the picture

“It’s going to look so cute on my page”, he grins already writing the caption, “Is that a good caption Being able to spend Christmas with you is a present in itself and then I would add three hearts and a tree” he asks looking at you for approval.

“Sure sounds cute”, Hoseok says shrugging his shoulders.

“Okay then I will post it now”, Jimin says grinning excitedly before pressing post. “Someone already liked it!” he announces, his smile growing, “It’s Hayley, damn she is fast okay wait now she posted a comment The cutest bunch I have ever seen. Miss you guys xx. Awww she is cute”, Jimin mumbles refreshing his page over and over again to see who liked the picture next.

“Are you finished with talking to yourself now Jimin or do you want to continue? Because we would really like to start eating now”, Jungkook asks making Jimin look up from his phone.

“Sorry guys I’m coming”, Jimin apologizes, throwing his phone onto the sofa before joining the rest of you at the dining table.

The food tastes delicious, the turkey was perfectly cooked and Seokjin did a great job at making the stuffing. The potatoes which you and Hoseok made, had the perfect consistency, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and the sauce Jimin had made really was the cherry on top. You had stopped counting at the third plate and soon all of you feel too full to move.

“This was the most delicious meal I have ever had”, you say happily whilst rubbing your stuffed stomach.

“It really was, eventhough I feel stuffed I think I need to go for a quick after-dinner walk. Anyone wants to join?”, Namjoon says looking at you.

“Bro the only after-dinner walk I will go on is the walk from here to there”, Seokjin says pointing at the couch.

“I have a better idea. I have this tradition with my parents where we write our wishes on a piece of paper and then read them aloud before throwing them into a fire. Do you maybe want to do that? The fresh air surely will help us digest a bit” you suggest.

“That sounds cute. I really want to do that”, Hoseok says already feeling excited to which everyone agrees.

“Sure fresh air never hurt nobody”, Yoongi agrees nodding slowly.

“Yaay I’m so excited!” you squeal before running off the grab some pen and paper and your coat.

Soon everyone has written down their wishes and once you had gone outside and Seokjin had managed to get a fire going your little tradition can begin.

“So who is going to start?“ you ask playing nervously with the paper in your hands.

“I want to start first", Jungkook says, waving his piece of paper in his hands grinning widely. He looks at you waiting for your complaints, but they never came. He nods contently, clearing his throat. “I wish that we can all stay healthy and happy and that we can achieve everything that we couldn't achieve in 2018”, he reads with his eyes fixated on the paper. Suddenly his eyes snap up, “and I wish for us to stay together”, he adds smiling at the rest of you. He crumples his paper before throwing it into the fire.

“Me next please!” Jimin says waving his hand excitedly making the rest of you laugh.

“Go ahead Jiminie no one's stopping you", Hoseok snorts making Jimin smile happily.

“Okay so I wish for us to stay healthy. Then I wish to finally get my divers license and buy that car I always wanted. And that I am able to release some of my own songs, I would really love that", he says, smiling sadly once he is finished, “I hope that people will like them”, he adds so quietly that you wouldn't have been able to hear him if it wasn't for the silence of the night.

“Hey don't worry Jiminie. People will love your music and your voice. You are so talented don't worry", Yoongi assures him patting his thigh. Jimin smiles finally crumpling his paper and throwing it into the fire.

“Thank you hyung", he grins, pulling his scarf over his blushing cheeks.

“I want go next!” Seokjin says once the last piece of Jimins paper has burned. You nod, allowing him to speak. “Alright, I wish that we stay healthy, that we can go on this holiday to Y/Ns hometown we have been speaking of since 2017 and that we can keep this happiness I had felt the last few days", he says before throwing his paper into the fire.

“I really would like to see my parents again", you mumble, realizing how much you miss them. A big hand comes resting on your thigh pressing it gently.

“You will see them very soon again. I promise", Seokjin assures you smiling sweetly at you. You smile back at him, intertwining your fingers with his.

“Thanks Jinnie", you smile, your heart feeling lighter again.

“Can I go next? Before we all become sad now", Hoseok says trying his hardest to cheer you up. You look at him; he was looking at you with worry in his eyes.

“Sure sunshine go ahead", you tell him, nodding.

“Okay, sooo. Just like everyone I wish for us to stay healthy and happy. I wish for BTS to find a path where we can still have some time for ourselves whilst staying successful. And I wish for us to have time for Y/N again. I don't want us to go back to how we where before our holiday", he says, playing with his paper once he is finished. “I'm finished someone can go next", he sighs throwing the paper into the flames.

“I wish that too hyung", Namjoon says looking at you with a sad smile on his face. “I wish for us to stay together for forever, even when BTS is long nothing more than a memory from our youth. I want us to stick together, that we can laugh together and still live under one roof”, he says taking a deep breath. He folds his paper, giving it a kiss before throwing it into the fire.

“Jeez why are all your wishes so sad?” Yoongi says, making the rest of your chuckle. He really knows how to lighten up the mood. “You want to go first Taehyung and Y/N? I know you both probably went full sad mode, it would fit into the mood perfectly. Because then I'll go last, my wishes aren't that depressing”, he says making you laugh even louder.

“Fine then I want to go next”, you say unrolling the paper in your hands. You clear your throat, taking a deep breath before opening your mouth to speak. “I wish for us to stay healthy, yeah I know everyone said that already but it doesn't hurt when I’ll repeat it again. I wish for you guys to achieve everything that you dream of. I wish for Hayley to finally find her true love. And I wish for us to stay as happy as we are right now even when the everyday life starts again", you say looking at each of your boyfriends. You crumple your paper throwing it into the flames.

“Hyung you can go first, mine is rather long", Taehyung says unfolding his paper and showing you his paper. Your eyes grow big in surprise.

“Damn Tae you really did the most", Jimin chuckles.

“Yeah I got carried away", Taehyung mumbles looking at his snow covered shoes.

“Fine then I'll go next”, Yoongi says, clearing his throat and holding his paper in front of his face, “I wish for good health and happiness. I wish for success, maybe even a Grammy. I wish for Holly to live long. And I wish for our relationship to keep growing and blossoming", Yoongi says, nodding his head once he is finished. He rolls his paper before throwing it into the bright flames.

“So now for the grand final Taehyung and his list of thousand wishes", Seokjin announces making you snort.

“Don't make it sound funny hyung", Taehyung pouts looking insecure all of a sudden.

“No I’m sorry, I didn't mean it like that, go ahead”, Seokjin says, sounding slightly panicky.

“Fine. Okay so I know it got kind of long but I hope you still like it”, he clears his throat before continuing, “I wish for Yeontan to start living with us, I really miss him. I wish for BTS to stay successful. I wish for Jin-hyung to keep coming up with jokes and stay just as youthful as he is right now. I wish for Yoongi-hyung to be able to stay inspired and to finally realise that taking breaks is actually good for him. I wish for Hoseok-hyung to finally be able to find the courage to open up to us and that he knows that we will love him even if he is sad. I wish for Namjoon-hyung to always find time for his walks and that his worries will fade. I wish for Jiminie to keep laughing and that his insecurities about his talents stop. I wish Jungkookie to realise that sometimes taking a rest and letting your body heal is a good thing and that he can finally achieve his dream of his own mixtape. I wish for Y/N to keep laughing everyday and that she stays just as perfect as she us right now. And for me, well I just wish to never be alone”, he says, looking up at you once he has finished his words.

“Wow Tae you really wrote down a wish for everyone?” Hoseok says clutching his heart.

“Yeah, I’m sorry for getting emotional like that", Taehyung says sinking his head to hide the tears threatening to spill.

“Don't apologize that was beautiful”, you assure him, cupping his cold cheek. He looks at you smiling softly.

“Thank you", he mumbles. He takes a deep breath, closing his eyes to gain his composure again before throwing his paper into the fire.

“Thank you guys, for saying yes to my idea. It really means a lot to me. Normally I would have always done this with my parents so doing it with you means a lot to me. After all you are my family now", you say making each of them smile fondly at you.

“You are our family too baby", Jimin smiles, blushing hard.

“Now that we are already talking about traditions, why don't we go inside and give each other our presents?” Seokjin suggests pointing at the brightly light living room.

“Sounds like a fun tradition to me", Namjoon grins, getting to his feet.

“Yeah, I’ve been dying to see all your presents ever since we went shopping", Jungkook says, jumping up and clapping excitedly.

“Then let’s go inside”, Yoongi says reaching out his hand for you to take. You grab it, letting yourself get pulled to your feet.

“Come on hyung you can wrap your arm around my shoulder”, Taehyung says, dragging Seokjin to his feet and wrapping an arm around his waist. Seokjin lays his arm around Taehyungs neck, smiling thankfully at the younger man.

“I want to go first”, Hoseok announces before storming off and holding the glass door open for the rest of you.

“Fine with me, but I want to go last”, you say peeling the thick coat off your shoulders and throwing it onto the sofa.

“As you wish princess”, Yoongi chuckles, sitting down at the big fur rug with his legs crossed.

Soon the rest of you follow, sitting down one by one. You decide to stand up and get the presents one by one.

Hoseok had managed to find accessories perfectly fitted for everyone. He had gotten Namjoon a silver whistle, making him jump up excitedly once he sees it glistening in the light. For Yoongi and Jimin he had bought something from Chanel, both of then thanking him with a bright smile. For Taehyung he had bought a pair of glasses. He had said that Seokjin was the hardest to get presents for, but still he managed to buy a scarf which perfectly fitted to his personality. For Jungkook he had gotten a belt, saying that he needed to invest in some more expensive belts to accentuate his style. And for you he had bought a watch, making your eyes nearly fall out of your eyes once you had read the brand name.

The next one is Namjoon who gets up to get his presents. He had decided to go for books this year, having carried them in his suitcase the whole time. They fitted each of your personalities perfectly, making all of you excited to read them.

After Namjoon, Seokjin is the one standing up and getting his presents. He had gotten all out on the wrapping paper, wrapping each of the presents at least three times. Despite your initial anger at his waste of paper, your anger soon fades once you all get to see your presents. He had gotten Jimin some new glasses, telling him that he just knew that these were the ones. For Jungkook he had apparently gone into the same store as you, buying him a new lens. For Taehyung he had found some cute clothes for Yeontan making him squeal in excitement. He had gotten Namjoon three books, all of them in English, explaining that it was really hard to find books in a language he would be able to understand. For Yoongi he had bought a ring, saying that it would fit perfectly to his earrings. For Hoseok he had gotten a pair of shoes, which made Hoseok scream out in excitement. “Thank you hyung they are so cool!” and for you he had gotten an album full of photographs. You had thrown it closed as soon as you had opened it, Seokjins naked crotch greeting you.

“Jesus fucking Christ what is that?” you screech looking at him in utter shock.

“You own personal album whenever you miss me", he explains sending you a wink.

“You are unbelievable”, you whine, too proud to admit that you actually quite enjoy his present.

Once Jimin had realised that all the whining wouldn't let him see the photo album he gets up for his presents.

“I know Jin-hyung already got you the same thing I'm sorry", he apologizes once he hands you his presents. Turns out that he had made each of you a photo album filled with polaroids from your adventures together. It was beautiful, with handwritten notes between the pictures and cute little drawings.

“It's beautiful baby thank you so much", you tell him making him smile sweetly at you.

Taehyung is the next to get up and carry his presents to you. He had been able to find a designer clothing shop in town and had bought each of you a piece if their newest collection. Despite your initial whining that he had spent far too much money, you accepted it with a grateful smile on your faces.

The next one was Jungkook. He had been feeling nervous the whole time, mostly because he didn't spend as much money as the others and now he was feeling guilty. You tell him that, no matter how small the present is, it’s the thought that matters the most. In the end they turn out to be perfect presents from rings for Jimin to a sweater for Namjoon and a beret for Taehyung over to a new beanie for Yoongi, a gamer mouse for Seokjin and an oversized t-shirt for Hoseok. He had handed you a USB flash drive, smiling shyly at you.

“Wow omg Kookie I always wanted a new USB flash drive, I lost my old one thank you", you exclaim, smiling happily.

“The thing that's on there is your present, but you can keep the flash drive too", Jungkook tells you, making you curious all of a sudden.

“What is it?” you ask turning the flash drive in front of your face in hopes to get some hints.

“It's a surprise. You need to look at later", he tells you making you pout.

“Fine”, you whine, putting the flash drive down next to your other presents.

Soon Yoongi gets up to go to the big tree. He crouches down, pulling out his presents before walking back to the rug. He kneels down, handing each of you a thin packet.

“I hope you like it", he mumbles starring at each of your faces for a reaction. Your faces light up once you see the content of his present. He had made each of you, your own personal mixtapes with songs he had written for you and some of your favorite songs thrown in between. He had finished it off with a picture of him holding a big paper heart in front of his chest as the cover. You thank him, smiling brightly at the perfectly arranged mixtape.

“Now it's my turn", you say excitedly once you realise that everyone except you had gotten up already. “Don't expect great things though, you know I'm broke”, you say running to the Christmas tree. You carry them to the rug kneeling down slowly in an attempt not to drop everything.

“Baby don't worry, we will love everything you get us", Jimin assures you, helping you hand out the beautifully wrapped presents.

“So okay I don't have a specific order, you guys can decide who goes first", you tell them scratching the back of your neck.

“I'm the oldest I want to go first”, Seokjin says already opening the bow. He rips the paper from the present gasping once he sees the game lying in his hands. “Wow oh my god little one you got me Mario Party? I can finally play it thank you so much!” he yells, grinning so much his cheeks turn all puffy.

“It's my turn now", Hoseok announces now that he had seen the present which you had gotten for Seokjin. He pulls the wrapping paper off in one go. “Angel how did you know that I ran out of it?” he asks, looking at you in pure disbelieve.

“You weren't smelling like yourself lately”, you giggle watching him unpack the perfume and spray it onto his wrists and neck. He inhales the scent, smiling fondly.

“You really smell good now hyung. I'll go next", Jungkook says already taking his own present into his hands. “No you didn’t”, he gasps once he sees the tripod, he looks at you with big eyed utterly shocked about your present, “how did you know that I’ve been dreaming of this?” he asks, carefully opening the packet.

“You have been talking about it nonstop”, you tell him, smiling proudly once you see his happy face.

“Can I go next please?” Yoongi asks turning his present around to gently open the wrapping paper. He turns the now opened present around, squealing loudly once he sees the noise cancelling headphones.

“You always complaint about not being able to properly listen to music because of all the noise around you", you say watching his smile grow wider and wider.

“Thank you princess this is the best present ever", he laughs, already pulling the headphones out of their packaging.

“You can go next Jiminie, you've been eyeing your present ever since the beginning", Taehyung says, concealing his own need to open his present as good as possible.

Jimin rips his present open after that, letting his jaw drop once he sees the camera in front of him. “It's-", he begins before having to swallow his tears down. “Thank you so much! This is my dream camera thank you baby!” he screams throwing his arms around your neck to pull you into a tight hug. You giggle wrapping your own arms around his figure enjoying his loving touch.

“You are welcome baby", you laugh. He presses a kiss to your cheek, smiling sweetly at you.

“It's my turn now", Taehyung announces once he isn't able to wait any longer. He is slow, unpacking his present with so much care that the rest of you soon tell him to hurry up. “Wooooow sweetheart, this is so beautiful", he gasps holding the leather camera bag in his hands.

“I got it from an antiques shops, the owner told me that this bag once belonged to a very famous photographer, who had to sell it to afford his train ticket to go visit his family", you tell him seeing his eyes light up at the story.

“That's so sad and cool at the same time, thank you sweetheart I can finally carry my camera around”, he smiles pressing it against his chest.

“Now for the last present of tonight", Namjoon says taking his present into his hands and quickly unwrapping it. His eyes cloud over with happiness once he sees the book and beautiful looking pen. He opens it, reading the small message you have written on the first page “For when you need to empty your mind so your ideas can flow again.”

“Wow thank you my love. I always wanted to get a diary, this is so beautiful”, he smiles, stroking over the empty pages.

“I'm glad that you liked my presents”, you say smiling shyly at your folded hands.

“They are amazing, all of your presents are", Hoseok says, taking the hands of Seokjin and Yoongi into his.

“Do you guys want some eggnog now? Just so we could celebrate finishing our tradition”, you ask, already getting to your feet to walk into the kitchen.

“Actually princess there is still one more present”, Yoongi says making you stop in your way and turning around.

“Did I forget to hand you one of my presents?” you ask feeling nervous all of a sudden. You let your eyes wander over their laps to see if someone didn’t get their present.

“No we have got something for you”, Jungkook says, grinning from ear to ear.

“For me?” you ask, suddenly curious and you plonk down on the fur rug again now looking at them with big eyes.

“Yeah wait let me get it real quick”, Taehyung says before jumping to his feet and running to the tree. He kneels down, stretching his arm underneath the lowest branches of the tree to fish something from its hiding spot. “Got it”, he exclaims before pulling out something bright red. He returns to you hiding the small thing in his big hands. He already reaches out to hand it to you before Hoseoks strong arm stops him.

“Can I say something before you hand it to her?” he asks looking between the other guys. They nod signaling him to talk with a wave of their hands.

“Okay so, Y/N I just want to thank you for agreeing on going on the holiday with us. You didn’t have to and you still did and I’m just so grateful for this given opportunity to make everything between us good again. I’m so happy that we actually managed to stop on our paths to run back to each other. I just love you so much”, he says making your cheek turn crimson red.

“I love you too Hoseok”, you say smiling sweetly at him.

“Wait now I want to say something too”, Namjoon announces waving his arms above his head.

“Sure go ahead hyung”, Taehyung encourages him, whilst hiding your present behind his back.

“My dear Y/N thank you for opening my eyes again, I was blind for the last few months. I didn’t want to see love or happiness, all I wanted to see was success. And I will probably never forgive myself for that. But you managed to show me how beautiful love is and how happiness actually looks like and I’m actually happy again. I can’t stop smiling the whole day and just really, really love you. All of you”, he says, smiling with so much love in his heart he is sure he will explode one day.

“I love you too Joonie and you make me happy too. I’m sorry I know I repeat myself all over again but I just don’t know what to say right now you are too much for me to comprehend right now”, you say making the others laugh.

“Don’t apologize little one, this is about you right now you don’t need to say anything”, Seokjin reassures you with a fond smile on his face.

“Can I give her the present now?” Taehyung asks playing with it behind his back.

“Sure go ahead Tae”, Jungkook says already pulling out his camera to film to whole scene. You look at the young man for a second you heartbeat quickening even more in your chest.

“This is our promise to you Y/N, that we will forever be by your side no matter what happens”, Taehyung says before finally handing you your present. You stare at it for a moment, taking in the bright red satin box. You trail your fingers over the soft material, feeling too nervous to actually open it.

“Go on open it”, Yoongi urges you on, watching you with nervous eyes.

You take a deep breath before finally opening the little box. Your eyes grow big and you are sure that your heart had stopped beating for a good second. A beautiful rose gold ring was lying in the box, the big diamond in the middle of the ring shimmering in the lights.

“Is that?” you begin before you have to stop to swallow the sudden lump in your throat.

“We know that it’s legally not really possible as of now, but we thought that maybe we can still ask you and just keep it between us until one day it can be possible for us to make it official”, Jimin says nervously biting his lip.

You look at them, feeling lost for words, your lips quivering from the sobs threatening to spill.

“We got a ring too, so everybody knows that we belong together”, Seokjin says showing you the ring on his finger, “So what do you say?” he asks.

“I just-“, you start before sobs take over your voice and you can do nothing more than to nod your head vigorously. “Yes, yes, yes”, you sob throwing yourself onto the closest person.

“We love you so much”, Jimin says before breaking out into sobs as well hugging you close to his body.

Today wasn’t a good day. There was no reasonable explanation for the overwhelming feeling of sadness undeniably intertwined with anger at the day slowly drawing to a close, it was just there. Despite the bitter taste in your mouth, the weather decided now would be a good time to come into its own and produce one of the most beautiful days imaginable. With the heat at nearly record highs and not a cloud in the sky, Geoff my older brother by merely a year had jumped at the chance to go to the nearby beach with his friends. Although as they all rushed out the door this morning to pile into his tiny car, the glint in their eyes hinted at its hidden (yet definitely doomed) aim of picking up girls’ way out of their league. With a scowl etched on my face, air con blasting, my day consisted of binging the new OINTB season questioning why I even bothered to watch it past the second season in the first place, it seemed as though nothing could brighten my mood. Shuffling around on my bed in an attempt to get out of the sunlight it was like every new movement was a plane trip to the Sahara, the sun following my every move. Groaning loudly I rolled out of bed, dragging my heavy feet along with me to the curtains.

“Fuck you sun.” I angrily spluttered as I pulled them across tightly “why couldn’t you have appeared on a day when I wanted to leave the house” leaving my room in total darkness.

“Jeeeeeez, who pissed you off today? I don’t want to break it to you y/n but it might take 5-7 working days to get a reply from the sun” a loud voice proclaimed across the room with a laugh almost resembling a giggle following shortly after. That voice. I didn’t even need to turn around to know who it was.

“Shawn, if you’re going to try and sass someone, don’t laugh afterwards, you lose any respect of credibility you had” I grumbled loud enough for him to hear. Spinning around on my heel I finally looked at my brothers friend….

Oh wow.

His toned torso glistened with light from the water still left on his tanned skin as he shook his soaked hair out of the way of his vision, his curls lightly sticking to his forehead. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t stare as his unclothed biceps moved while he slowly leant on my doorframe.

“Ever the charmer, Y/N” he said as his mouth spread open to reveal his breathtaking smile.

“As much as I adore your company, Mendes” I spoke with sarcasm highly evident “why are you in my room? I’d much rather be alone”. Just because there was an incredibly good looking boy in my room, it didn’t change the fact that I was in a foul mood.

Raising his free arm to his chest he pouted dramatically “that hurt y/n. Really hurt me. I thought we were friends. I guess I won’t tell you that we brought food ho-”

Shoving his body out the way, without saying a word, I quickly bounded down the stairs to see whatever food they’d bought. Used to having my brothers friends round when my parents went on one of their many ‘romantic getaways’, I knew the fight for food was really a survival of the fittest. Long past hungry I really wasn’t in the mood to take the risk, my body long since hungry and the walk from my bed to the kitchen way too much effort throughout the day in this mood.

“Hey y/n” my brother said as I grabbed my plate, nudging my elbow with his he almost made me drop the rice I was currently piling onto my plate. Giving him a sharp glare which he seemed barely phased by, he continued to shove food into his mouth whilst attempting to talk, chicken bursting out as he asked ‘we’re going out tonight. Will you be alright on your own?”. Nodding a reply I made my way into the kitchen from the dining room to grab a cold drink from the fridge I was met with Shawn washing his hands at the sink.

‘Oh hey, sorry, I, um’ he muttered out quickly turning back to face the running water ‘just washing my hands, I couldn’t really get the sand off from the beach’. Grabbing a tea towel off the side he turned to face me, his broad body lounged against the work top, managing to even make drying his hands look like a calvin klein ad campaign.

‘I don’t need to know your life story’ I spoke moving around him to bend down to the fridge to find what drink I wanted, hiding my blush in the cold air blasting from the door. As Shawn lightly hit me with the towel, I gasped standing up straight to look at him, eyes wide with confusion

‘hey, don’t be arsey with me, what have I done wrong?’ he softly said, eyes boring into yours

‘nothing I’m just not really in a great mood today’

he raised his eyes quizzically, querying how much he believed you ‘hm, anything you want to talk to me about, you know you can always talk to me about anything’

Smiling slightly I nodded ‘I know that Shawn, I’m fine honestly, just one of those days’

‘come here chicken’ he said, pulling you into a hug, remembering the nickname he’d given you for no apparent reason since you were kids. Wrapping your arms around his wide frame, he pulled you close into him, his hands hanging low at the base of your back, his heat a contrast to the cold air still seeping from the refrigerator.

‘What on earth’ pulled you out of the embrace, your brother wandering into the kitchen with a scowl on his face, foreboding eyes judging the lack of distance between his little sister and best friend.

Quickly slamming the fridge door and grabbing my plate of food from the side I quickly shuffled away from the two of them up to my room ‘have fun tonight guys’ I managed to mutter before any questions at what just happened could be raised, my feet not quick enough to miss my brothers ‘dude, what the fuck’.

The next morning my eyes shot open as sweat dripped down my face. I was far too young to be having hot flushes. Someone, I’m assuming my brother, had opened my curtains wide and as the sun shone through it heated me up, along with the mountains of blankets and duvets on top of me. I checked the clock next to my bed, and after straining my eyes to focus on the small letters I saw it was only 7 in the morning. Oh God, no one should be up this early in the day, no chance of getting back to sleep at this rate. Begrudgingly hopping out of bed dressed in only a large t shirt I strolled down the stairs, feeling in a much better mood than yesterday, even whilst waking up early. and strolled down the stairs. As my feet hit the cold tiles of the kitchen from the air con blasting all night I felt my routine cup of tea calling my name, I can never understand how people can survive the day without at least some type of caffeine to get them started. Swinging open the cupboard door, I quickly scanned the shelves to find my favourite mug my family in Ireland had given to me last time we visited. Oh for fuck sake, finding it on the top shelf I stared at it whilst mentally hitting my brother who always puts it right at the top just for a laugh. Pushing myself up onto my tiptoes and reaching as far as my arms would allow I felt my fingertips hitting the side of the cup. Sighing to myself I tried one more time, certain I was going to be able to grab it I felt myself being lightly pushed against the counter as I felt a warm body behind me, reaching up to easily grab the mug I struggled so hard for.

“You look really hot in my clothes, y/n” a familiar voice said as he spun me round, still keeping my body close to his.

“I could have reached it myself, I don’t need a knight in shining armor” I rolled my eyes ‘what are you even still doing here Shawn, and besides this isn’t even yours, I took it from my brothers’ cupboard’ I proclaimed as I stared into his eyes pulling the top down as far as the material would allow to attempt to make up for the fact I wasn’t wearing any bottoms.

“He got smashed last night so when I took him back I just decided to stay here” he spoke as he briskly looked me up and down “and I accidentally left it here a few months ago and kept forgetting to pick it up every time I came round. You can have it though, I think it looks a hell of a lot better on you than it did on me” he said with a small smirk pulling at his lips as he stared down at me, moving his hand from the counter onto my hip, raising the material a bit up my thigh.

It was undeniable how attractive he was but he was my brothers friend and I was the little sister so there was no way anything could happen.

“Shawn…I…um-” he shushed me by pressing his lips to mine. What a cliché. But there was no way I was going to stop him, as I ran my hand up his bare chest

“Do you…ever…wear a shirt” I breathed out in between hot kisses that left my heart pounding out of my chest. He moved his lips to my neck, kissing it lightly all the way up as he reached just under my ear

“Don’t complain, I saw you stare yesterday” he chuckled out

“I was not staring I wa-”

“Shut up and kiss me y/n” he huffed out as he stared into my eyes “I’ve waited for this forever”

I ran my hand up the back of his neck until my hands were in his hair and pulled him forward till my lips were connected to mine, lifting me slightly off the ground he rested me on the edge of the counter. Unfortunately, the heat of the moment left us carried away as the mug clattered to the floor smashing into pieces everywhere.

“Shit” Shawn cursed as he bent down to start picking pieces up “stay up there I don’t want you to get hurt” he said lightly touching my exposed thigh.

“I think I can pick up a piece of china, Mendes” I laughed out, my breathing still erratic from the previous moments

“No please don’t. Stay up here. For me” he smiled brightly, his wide grin and pleading eyes softening any resolve that I had

“You know exactly how to get what you want” I spoke as I kissed him lightly.

“That I d-”

“WHATS ALL THAT NOISE” my brother hollered as he stumbled down the stairs, you could basically hear the hangover following him.

“Let me take you out” Shawn whispered, as we were running out of time before my brother would appear. I nodded hastily with a bright smile as I dropped to my feet starting to pick up the broken mug as Geoff dragged his wasted body into the room with no recollection of the young love shared between hot lips just seconds before.

Ummm.... So... That didn’t really answer anything but okay. I mean... She’s been raised to believe the Dark Lord is like, their god... If that was him, then seeing him rise would be, like, #Goal, right?

Oh, Salem doesn’t wanna go inside. Gee, wonder why...

So that’s the end of episode one... And I’m just...

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The lighting is appalling. Everything, even the outdoors, is so dim and dreary. The school, something that is generally so bright, seems like it’s lit only by natural light and they live in Forks, Washington.

The camera work, something I rarely say anything about unless it’s shakey cam, is strange. Like, we randomly get this weird blur around the edges? I’m not sure what’s that called but I know there’s a name for it. It can be a stylistic choice, but it seems arbitrary.

The effects are decent though. I’ve seen worse.

The contrast between Zelda and Hilda is interesting, but doesn’t sit well with me. There’s no explanation given for why one is so Evil and one so Nice - especially since they’re both followers of the Dark Lord. It just doesn’t make sense for them to be nearly polar opposites like they are.

I have mixed feelings about Salem, but I don’t hate it. I do miss the OG Salem’s sass though.

My initial thoughts during the trailer was that the witches were EVIL and SATANIC - something that this first episode has NOT done anything to counter. It’s also clear witches are hereditary, a bloodline, and that they have powers before their Dark Baptism so why is it so damned important to sign the book? Also the Path of Night, Path of Light thing. What the fuck is the Path of Light, exactly? The Path of Night is obviously serving the Dark Lord, Satan... to what means, I don’t know, but what the fuck is the Path of Light? It’s kind of implied that’s mortality, humanity - but beyond that? I don’t know. I don’t like that all witches are being shown as evil and Satanic, save Sabrina who, for whatever reasons, isn’t Evil like Zelda or more morally grey like Zelda. Like, why is she so damn good despite being raised by two witches of the Path of Night???

Some of ya’ll know I was a fan of the show Salem. While I despise witches being Satanic and shit, because that just further underlines the ongoing misconception which still affects witches in real life, I can get down with a show despite that if it’s good enough....

So far this isn’t winning me over. The writing for this show... man...

I mean, this is only the first episode but I’m sorely unimpressed.

I’ll give episode two a shot...

So Friday morning, my fiance' and I were headed to New Jersey to visit his family for Christmas. On the way there, I was driving his truck so he could sleep a little before we switched places. Early morning when we were in Virginia, I pulled off the highway to go to a McDonalds to get some coffee. When I pulled off, it was a weird exit and I had no clue where I was going. I stopped at a red light, which had another light very close behind it which turned green, my idiot self was looking at that light for some reason while our light was still red...I hit the gas and then slammed on my breaks realizing what I was doing but it was too late and I hit a guy on the side of the door. It wasn't a big wreck. The guy didn't fly across the intersection. He didn't even move, his door was just dented and it will definitely need to be replaced but the man said he was not hurt at all. The truck we were driving in barely had damage, just a little dent in the hood that was very small to the eye and a bent license plate. We were in much better shape; but again, he was not in pain and his door was the only thing that seemed to be damaged. ANYWAYS, I received a traffic ticket for failing to obey a traffic light which I totally accept because this was extremely stupid of me and I am planning on mailing the fine to the court. So since I was driving my fiance's car, which is under his parents insurance, I assume my insurance is not affected. The trooper just told us that the other guy's insurance will contact my fiance's insurance. So I am thinking all I have to do is just pay this awful fine. Victorian Floorboard Restoration with Osmo Oil Polyx Raw

I haven't shared any progress of the dining room for months now. Truth be told, we've done loads - but it's also been a room that's been piled high with storage for a very very long time. It's a constant battle; renovating, cleaning and finding homes for the bazillion bits of materials we have leftover. And this room, well - let's just say, it's suffered!

But anyway - today I'm sharing a little flooring update in here. Despite our kitchen and dining now being open plan, we decided to go for separate flooring in both these areas. Our kitchen has beautiful limestone tiles on the floor (full blog post on that here!) but in the dining room, we decided to keep the original floorboards exposed. This decision behind this was based partly on budget (we couldn't afford THAT much limestone!) and also partly because I couldn't really bare to cover up the victorian floorboards, particularly when they're in such great knick for a 100+ year old floor! Over the last 18 months, this room has undergone some intense work. A lot of dust. A fair few falling bricks, many dirty boots, mucky paws, splashes of paint, filler, plaster, you name it. The floor, which was in good condition, turned into absolute filth! So it still needed a lot of TLC.

And by TLC I mean they needed one hell of a sand! I love floorboards that have a sense of age and character to them, so I was really keen not to sand them right back entirely. We even have some lovely little details on the floor that show where an old wall/door opening would have been and I absolutely love that! I really think it helps to tell a story about the house and how it was once used, and it also shows the years of use the floor has undergone. A perfectly sanded pristine new-looking floor just wasn't the feel I wanted for this room. After all, we've kept the wobbly ceilings and original lime-plasterered walls - so it just made sense to have a rustic aged floor too.

In order to actually keep the floorboards with this kind of character, a professional floor sanding machine is just too harsh for it. Those machines are really very rough on the floor and they literally strip the floor right back to clean brand new looking wood. Which is great if that's what you're after, but as I said, I wanted something a bit more rustic. So instead, I'll be sanding with a handheld sander! It takes much longer yes, BUT it saves you a ton of money and I personally prefer the look of floorboards when it's done this way. I've actually written a post before comparing the look of floorboards when using these two different methods, which you can read right here. But here's a quick look at our upstairs floor, which is a similar look to what we're hoping to achieve downstairs too...

As I said, we've done this in a couple of rooms already - but these were quite small in size, so I managed to get away just using a sanding attachment on a multi-tool. However this room is pretty big, so a small multi-tool sander just wasn't going to cut it, unless I wanted to lose weeks of my life that is. So instead I purchased a very cheap belt sander, which is basically a much smaller and less powerful equivalent to a professional floor sanding machine. It means you can still achieve that perfect clean wood look, if you want to, you'll just need to spend a bit more time sanding.

The sander I purchased was this one at just £35 (on offer at the time!) from Screwfix. It's a much much cheaper option to buy a belt sander than hire one - which would cost around £20 per day (jeeeeeez!). It's not the most powerful, or best one on the market - but it does do the job! I have to apologise now for the lack of progress photos - these are all from Grants phone and as I've mentioned previously, I've somehow managed to lose all my own photos from January-May - gah! 😞

I always start off with a lower grit (which is coarser paper) and move through the boards quite quickly. The slower you go, the more you'll take off. I was keen to get a smooth enough finish, so we don't have to worry about getting splinters, but not so much that all the characterful dints and grooves had been removed. If that makes sense? Basically - I was happy to leave a bit of grub behind on the boards!

You want to make sure you're sanding along the grain and with the board. You'll probably find some areas require a bit more work than others and if you have slightly curved boards, you'll also find the edges won't sand very well. For this, I recommend going over with a smaller multi-tool attachment, or even a mouse sander, which is small enough to tilt slightly at an angle. You'll also require a smaller sander or multi-tool to get right into the edges of the boards against the skirting, as the belt sander is just too big to get that close. If you've removed the skirting boards of course, this won't be an issue. The smaller sanders are much less powerful, so be prepared to spend a little longer on areas when using these! I also HIGHLY recommend buying a DIY-hoover that you can attach to the sander. Literally, it will change your life and you'll have absolutely no dust to clear up. No dusty walls, no dust ingrained into your sofa, no dust in pesky hard to clean cracks, yep - absolutely none! We've had ours for years now and I cannot recommend it enough. Once you've got most of the muck off, you can then go over with a finer grit sandpaper. This is pretty essential to remove any sanding marks the coarser one has left behind. If you don't remove these and stain the floor with a tint, these really do show up and really don't look great. In fact I would say, this part is the most important!

It took me about 2 days to do the whole room, so it was relatively quick considering this room is pretty big - but I have to admit; my knees and back were definitely aching by the second day! I recommend knee pads and lots of rest afterwards for sure. Hopefully you can see how a bit of muck and keeping those imperfections help to add character and that rustic-effect we're looking for.

After a few days of rest, I then had to decide what to use on the boards to protect them. I know some people are happy to leave the boards untreated, but when you have two dogs with mucky paws from the garden, I really don't think this is such a good idea. Treating the boards makes them water resistant, easier to clean, and less likely to be damaged or stained by liquids. Basically for a downstairs heavy-usage room, I personally think it's a must! I've heard a lot about the brand Osmo, so I decided to give their products a whirl. They basically offer a unique product that combines Oil and Wax and it also allows the wood to 'breathe'. It most certainly is not the cheapest on the market, but with everything I've heard about it - I just had to give it a go! The reason I didn't use the same stuff I had used upstairs was because I wanted to keep these boards a bit lighter in colour.

Osmo have a whole load of tints and different finishes, but the one I went for is the Polyx Raw. This is basically meant to leave the floor looking untreated and it claims to be "almost transparent". If you're unsure on which tin to go for - I recommend getting some samples beforehand. I actually sampled their 'Clear' version which pretty much turned the floor orange - so I'm pretty glad I didn't just go straight in with a purchase of that! The tin said you could simply apply by brush, so that's exactly what I did, making sure to really work it into the board and not over-apply - which is never a good thing when it comes to wax.

I have to be honest after the first coat, I was super disappointed. It seemed to have left a white milky film in patches over the board and it most definitely was not "transparent". I researched reviews online and found a few other people had had the same issues - it would seem this product isn't the best when it comes to dark floors or dark patches on the floor. Obviously I had left some darker areas where I hadn't fully sanded the floors to perfection and it was these areas that just didn't look great. It wasn't bad enough to show up on photo really and it definitely wasn't awful, but it just made me think the floor looked as if it needed mopping in places. You can very slightly see the white patches in this pic..

I left the floor unfinished for quite some time before deciding to go back over and give the floor a light sand (yes - I sanded it AGAIN 😩) and try again - this time rubbing the oil into the floor, so I could apply even less product. And this actually seemed to work! I had to give the floor a couple more coats than the tin recommended, but there was definitely little to no white hue across the boards. Winning!

I will say this - it definitely is not transparent, as you can see! The boards were originally quite light and more yellow-y tones and now they are definitely a darker tinge and look more woody. It's not drastic or huge, but it just definitely isn't transparent. Although that being said - I do think the boards still look untreated. The oil is very matt, so it's not obvious at all that they have a coat over them, they just appear to be a slightly darker wood.

Overall, I am really pleased - you can still see those little imperfections that I loved and the boards as I say, don't look treated. We've also had a few spillages already and I can definitely say the oil wax actually works too. Which is really the most important thing! I would definitely use the oil again, but I'll be sticking to the rubbing technique personally! I should also mention that I barely used any of the 2.5L tin I purchased, so a little really does go a long way, which is REALLY GOOD considering how expensive it is. In hindsight, a smaller tin would have been plenty - but then again, I now have enough to do the whole house - literally! So here's a couple of before and afters to finish up...

In regards to cleaning the boards - because I'm pretty sure I'll get asked, I use a steam mop on the lightest 'dust' setting. I was a little worried the steam mop may end up melting the wax or something horrifying so I certainly haven't braved it on the max setting, but a very gentle setting of steam mopping seems to do the job fairly well anyway!
