That candy-banana snippet made me think: did you know that Avocados were only imported from America after WW2? So its possible that neither Rami nor Gwil have never had an Avocado prior to coming home from the Mercury. Maybe they have dinner 2gether and try them out for the first time; Gwil falls in love with them and Rami is unfortunately very allergic against them and has an allergic attack. How would that go down? (I mostly came to this because you uncanoned Rami's cat allergy, so.. Avocado.)
(this can’t be canon for a variety of reasons, like what allergies usually go together, but mostly because I just fed Rami an avocado salad at his wedding, whoops!— so this one is just for fun!)
Gwil leans over the air fryer, watching the avocado fries get slowly spun around.
Joe looks over, smiling at Gwil’s interest in the machine— or the food, honestly he’s not quite sure. Joe looks back down at the sauce he’s whipping up for the fries, and then he looks over at Ben, who’s plating the grilled avocado with the roast beef that’s just come out of the oven. Joe thinks two avocado side dishes in one meal is a bit much, but why not, Gwil and Rami really wanted to try them.
The timer on the air fryer goes off, and Gwil jumps back a bit, smiling over at Joe. “Here,” Gwil says, carefully opening the air fryer, and then he takes one of the plates from Ben, putting a few fries on it, and then he does it for all four plates.
“Are they ready?” Rami asks eagerly, and Joe nods, looking at one of the plates.
“Looking good,” Joe says.
“I’ll take these,” Gwil says softly to Ben, carrying a couple plates over to the table, coming back for the other two as Ben pours their water glasses.
Joe takes the sauce dish over to the table, setting it down in the middle, and then he helps Ben carry the water over, looks around for napkins and utensils, and then claps his hands once. “Alright!” he says. “Let’s get this party started.”
“Thank you,” Rami says, smiling at Joe, and Joe nods, taking a sip of water. He looks at Gwil, bouncing up in his seat a couple times. “I’m sort of nervous,” he says, “is that silly?”
Gwil shrugs, and then reaches out, picking up one of the avocado fries. “It’s exciting,” he says. “Cheers,” he says, gesturing towards Rami with his fry, and then he takes a bit. “Whew, hot,” Gwil says, nodding. He takes a sip of water, and nods. “Mm,” he says.
“Good?” Ben asks, taking a bite of beef.
“It is,” Gwil says. He takes another bite, and makes another quiet noise, then sets his fry down to pick up his fork, digging into the grilled avocado. “Oh, the sauce,” he says, reaching out to pick up the dish, spooning some onto his plate. He dips the avocado into it, and then makes another noise. “That is delicious,” he says, looking at Joe.
“Thanks,” Joe says, “appreciate it. Ben?”
“Brilliant, thank you,” Ben says.
Rami takes a bite of his fry, nodding. He takes some sauce as well, dipping the fry into that next, and then he takes another large bite. “I like it,” he says. “I think. It’s different than I was expecting.”
“Bad different?” Joe asks.
“No,” Rami says, shaking his head. “It doesn’t really taste like much on its own, does it?”
“No, I guess not,” Joe says, “that’s why it just ends up mixed with a million other things. Guacamole, though, I think you’d like that a lot. Yeah, a good guac, whew. Can’t even talk about it.”
Ben smiles at Joe, taking another bite of beef. “Joe gets very excited about guacamole.”
“Clearly,” Gwil says, laughing softly, taking another bite of fry.
The four of them sit, chatting and eating, enjoying the meal, Gwil asking Joe and Ben about more things that avocados can be used for, and then Rami starts licking and biting at his lips. He reaches up, rubbing at his mouth, and then takes a sip of water.
“Alright?” Gwil asks, and Rami nods.
“What sort of spices are in this?” he asks, pointing to the sauce with his fork.
“Uh, is it spicy?” Joe asks. “It was just a Sriracha mayo.”
“I think it’s stinging my lips,” Rami says, and he takes another drink.
Ben frowns a bit, sitting forward. “Stinging?” he repeats. “Stinging how?”
“Like…” Rami rubs at his mouth again, and then bites on his lip. “Tingly?”
Ben and Joe look at each other, and then they both spring into action, Joe hurrying to the bathroom to find an antihistamine, and Ben crouching in front of Rami, taking his face in his hands.
“I’m fine,” Rami says, looking at Ben. “What are you doing?”
“Gwil,” Ben says, looking over at him, “are his lips bigger to you?”
“What?” Gwil asks, and he pushes his chair back, looking at Rami. “I…a bit,” he says. “Rami, are you alright? Can you breathe?”
“Yes,” Rami says, “but my mouth feels itchy. I don’t like it.”
“Oh my god,” Ben groans, straightening up. “Rami, out of everything you’ve eaten, is avocado the only one you haven’t had before?”
Rami looks at the table, nodding. “Yes, I think so,” he says.
“What are the odds he’d be allergic?” Ben asks, looking at Gwil.
“Pretty good, I guess,” Gwil says.
“Okay, found it,” Joe says, walking back into the kitchen with a pill bottle in his hands. He opens it, shaking out a couple pills for Rami, handing them over. “Take those,” he says, “they should help the tingling.”
“He’s itchy too,” Ben says, looking at Joe.
“And his lips are swollen,” Gwil says.
“Shit,” Joe says. “Uh…” He trails off, looking at the other three. “Computer science,” he says, pointing to himself. “Law. Engineering.” He looks at Gwil. “Biologist.”
“Not a medical doctor,” Gwil says quickly.
“But closest to it!” Joe says. “What do we do?”
“I really am fine,” Rami says, taking another sip of water.
Ben makes a bit of a face, looking at Joe. “Do we call 999?”
“No, I don’t think so,” Joe says. “Uh. No. We just— no more eating!” Joe reaches out, pushing Rami’s plate away from him.
“I wasn’t!” Rami exclaims. “But surely I can still have the beef.”
“It touched the avocado,” Ben says. “You should stop.”
“But I’m hungry,” Rami says softly.
“Throw it all away,” Joe says.
“No, that’s being ridiculous,” Rami says. “There’s no reason you can’t finish your dinners. Gwil, sit down and finish your food.”
“We should order in,” Joe says, and Rami sighs. “What? You need to eat something.”
“Are you still breathing?” Gwil asks, and Rami rolls his eyes, but nods.
“Yes,” Rami says, “see?” He takes a deep breath. “I’m fine.”
Joe takes out his mobile, and starts going through his food apps, looking for something that can come quickly.
Ben and Gwil both take their seats again, watching Rami closely.
Rami sighs and turns to stare at Gwil, raising his eyebrows. “Are you going to stare at me all night?” he asks.
“I’m trying to see if the swelling has gotten worse,” Gwil says. He leans forward, examining his face closely. Then he leans down, resting his ear against Rami’s chest. “Deep breath.”
Rami takes a deep breath, and then sighs.
Gwil sits up, looking at Ben. “Sounds fine.”
“I didn't eat that much,” Rami says, “and Joe gave me whatever those pills are. I’m sure I’m alright.”
“Okay, dinner’s coming,” Joe says, looking up from his phone. “No avocado.”
Rami pouts a little, looking at the roast beef on the plate in front of him.
“What’s wrong?” Gwil asks, reaching out, his hand on Rami’s shoulder.
“I won’t be able to try the guacamole,” Rami says sadly.
“Ohh,” Joe says, making a face. “Yeah, that does suck.”
“Joe!” Ben says. “Don’t rub it in!”
Gwil slowly starts eating again, but after a few bites, he leans towards Rami again.
“Gwil, stop listening to me breathe,” Rami says.
“Just checking,” Gwil says, straightening back up.
“I still think we should throw it away,” Joe says, “breathing it in can’t be helpful.”
Rami groans, slumping down in his seat. “Please stop,” he says.
“We’ll take turns tonight,” Joe says.
“Take turns what?” Rami asks.
“Making sure you can breathe through the night,” Joe says. “It might be a delayed reaction.”
Rami rubs at his eyes, groaning, and then Ben reaches out to him.
“Rami, stop!” Ben exclaims. “You just got avocado in your eyes, you need to wash your hands.”
“This is ridiculous,” Rami says, pushing his chair back. “I’m going to have a shower. Let me know when my dinner’s here.”
“You can’t have a shower!” Joe exclaims. “What if you can’t breathe and pass out in there? We’d never hear you!”
Rami groans even louder, stomping his foot as he walks towards the bathroom. “I’m fine!” he exclaims, and Joe, Ben, and Gwil all look at each other.
“Maybe he’s fine,” Gwil says softly.
Joe just sighs, looking back and forth between Gwil and Ben, before hurrying after Rami. “Just let me sit in there with you!” he shouts, and Ben and Gwil smile at each other.
