last december my friend Kayoko came to visit and now, six months later, husband prime and i have finally got round to trying the collection of Japanese Kit-Kats she brought us. Here are our findings. 

First, the subjects: 

the flavours aren’t clear on all of them, but with the aid of google translate we have, starting at the top left and going across

top row: strawberry, milk tea, coffee 

middle row: orange, standard kit kat, cheesecake 

bottom row: pistachio, whole wheat, matcha (green) and dark chocolate (”adult sweetness” is the translation of the label, lol) 

tastings below the cut

the first one we tried was milk tea. Japanese milk tea is black tea brewed in milk and sweetened with plenty of sugar. Slightly reminiscent of builder’s tea in the UK in that it’s strong and sweet, but milk tea is creamier. 

the milk tea kit kat was very sweet to start, but the tea flavour was definitely noticeable at the end and lent a richness and depth to the white chocolate (which i generally don’t care for). Very good. 9/10 would eat again. 

kit kat two was pistachio.

now, i love pistachio in all its forms so i was looking forward to this one. Sadly, the pistachio flavour was very mild, almost undetectable. Still very tasty but a slight disappointment. 6/10

next is strawberry

another white (or rather pink) chocolate version. This one was very aromatic with a strong strawberry punch. Definitely artificial strawberry but a light and fresh one, not at all cloying. Personally i love fruit flavours in candy and so i really enjoyed this. 8/10

cheesecake is next

not super strong in the cheese flavour, but light and pleasant. It would be good paired with the strawberry actually. 5/10

next, orange

if you’ve ever had a Terry’s Chocolate Orange the flavour of this kit kat will be familiar to you. They’re almost exactly the same. So, delicious. Nice to have a bit of light crunch with the Terry’s flavour actually. 7/10

next, coffee

we weren’t certain at first if this was coffee flavour or just “coffee break” and it was a pretty strong chocolate flavour to start but with a definite hint of coffee at the end. Very nice, and probably would be good with a cup of coffee. 7/10

next is what google translate concluded was whole wheat

this one was fantastic. Very light and crunchy but with texture to the crunch, not too sweet with a caramelly, biscuity flavour in the chocolate. i thought it was a bit like a white chocolate digestive might be, husband prime likened it to a custard cream. Either way, fab. 10/10 i am going to be craving this one. 

next, dark chocolate

or “adult sweetness” according to the translation app. Saucy 😏. Dark chocolate isn’t my favourite but this was very good. Had a nice bitter edge without being overwhelming and also very rich. Good stuff. 8/10

standard kit kat

it’s a classic for a reason, and the japanese version has richer chocolate than you get in either the UK or US, with a lot of depth of flavour. Hard to go wrong. 7/10

last and definitely least, matcha

look, i know matcha has its adherents but you’re all wrong and have terrible taste. i tried proper matcha prepared by trained experts when i lived in japan and it was good, if a bit grassy for me personally. Very good when paired with some of their traditional sweets (sweet bean paste my beloved) but when it comes to flavouring other things? Ugh. No. Gross. Why do you want your ice cream to taste like lawn clippings? 

this kit kat did not taste like lawn clippings. It tasted, in husband prime’s words, like fish food (DON’T ASK ME HOW I KNOW THIS he made sure to add). Anyway, it was nasty. If you like matcha you might like it, idk, who can say what horrors your palate will tolerate. But for me it was only redeemed by the sweet crunch and the fact that the matcha flavour only came out at the end. 1/10.

the scores out of 10 obviously are based on my personal taste though i tried to be objective, hence the high rating of the dark chocolate. The following is my preference ranking, from first to worst

If Wishes Came True (3.87k)

The newest dish on our menu. A perfect tasting platter of some of our chef’s specialties: sparkling love, a character you adore but want to give a firm talking to, and endings that make the angst feel incredibly worth it.

Recommended pairing A healthy slice of cake and a cola flavoured lollipop.

Difficult (12.03k)

The first dish developed for the restaurant! A must for those who enjoy notes of instant chemistry, a bit of self-destruction, a lot of Fleabag energy, and hopeful endings.

Recommended pairing A strawberry milkshake, whipped cream vodka optional* *strongly suggested to make things a little messy, just don’t accidentally give it to the kids

Purple Haze (5k)

An opportunity to take a brief break from our menu's angsty notes to indulge in a heady, vintage-styled treat. This isn’t your average op-shop find, we’re talking high-end fashion, baby!

Recommended pairing A couple of gin bucks should do the trick. Or just the ginger ale if you’re not in the mood for a buzz!

Go Your Own Way (10.87k)

A dish close to the hearts of our whole kitchen. A perfect selection for those who have fallen for a fuckboy and find it therapeutic to recognise your past in a wonderfully raunchy but still angsty story. The finish of this dish manages to incorporate senses of both sadness and hopefulness, making for a cathartic aftertaste.

Recommended pairing A warming Mexican hot chocolate. You'll appreciate how it matches the spice and provides you with some added comfort when things get achy.

Endurance (15.11k)

You will never forget the first time you experience this dish and will always find a way to convince yourself that you aren’t boring for ordering it time after time. A slice of spiciness coupled with a heavy dash of the forbidden add immense depth to a texturally rich feast full of historical flavour.

Recommended pairing A U.S. Army-issued chocolate bar and maybe a prairie oyster for the vibes. But then make sure to treat yourself to some actually  nice-tasting chocolate.

The Kit Kat Trilogy (16.25k)

The dessert you’ll think about for 10 years and then come back for more. Save room because it is full of delicious angst and delightful romance that you won’t be able to help but consume whole. On a day when you’re low on time, you’ll consider stopping by for just another taste of this memorable sweet treat, we guarantee it.

Recommended pairing A full roast dinner. Even if it’s just for yourself. And maybe a glass of champagne to throw at the wall when things get angsty for a sec.

Dial Drunk (7.70k)

Let’s celebrate the end of our meal with lots of hope that emerges from some long-endured darkness.

Recommended pairing The loveliest hot breakfast you could possibly make, full of all your favourites and with plenty of food to go round.

Illicit Affairs (7.47k)

Let’s derail the end our meal with a real hot mess. Maybe you’ll wish you had picked the sweeter option, but, damn, you’ll enjoy the deeply achy ride.

Recommended pairing Wrap yourself in a blanket warm from the dryer for this one. And maybe have some water? The lack of flavour will be a good break from the intensity of it all while still keeping you hydrated.

Folks from the US getting condescending about people not from the states has to be my least favourite genre of posts. Like, i swear every other week I see some shit written in half baked (british) english slang about baked beans or jellied eels or rotten teeth and it drives me up the wall. Just a bunch of fundamental misunderstandings about a place they've never been too with little to no curiosity about what life might actually be like there.

Im only coming at this from a UK angle so cant speak for anywhere else but a quick rundown on all this shit states side people get wrong about our food specifically because thats what winds me up the most.

Beans on toast is a cheap staple breakfast food, not the cornerstone of our cullinary tradition.

In most urban city centers you get a complex mix of diaspora informed food stuffs, primarily indian and east asian because of all that colonialism we did. Relatively large muslim populations also bring in middle eastern influences.

Even what you might think of as a classic british pub will sell you a basic curry unless you're in the arse end of nowhere. This is not niche shit. Our whole food culture is shaped by this.

What you could call 'classic' british cooking like full roast dinners with Yorkshire puddings, propery gravy, sruffung, and all the other fixings are fucking great actually. Bit of lamb with mint, bit of pork with apple sauce, cut of beef with mustard. It goes hard.

Even if you are in the arse end of nowhere stuff like pasties, proper pies, stews with dumplings, fish and chips, and other sea side holiday basics that make you think of little coves in north devon are also good, actually. Yes its not spiced to all hell and back, but they incoperate herbs and vegatables and stocks in ways that give it a unique depth of flavour distinct from cultures informed by a more spice heavy tradition.

Say what you will about our shit (complimentary) chicken shops and rubbery high street donner in years of nights out blind drunk in student bits of the city they've never once given me the gastric distress y'all describe post taco bell.

Of course our mexican food isn't particularly authentic, the countries half a planet away and we dont have a large mexican diaspora. What we do have is tuned for mass market appeal by largish chains or sold out of artisinal taco food trucks that we all find a bit wanky tbh.

Spicy food exists, and we quite like it. Yes even pasty white tony who turns the colour of jam when he eats a medium hot vindaloo. Indian food is a cornerstone of our national diet of course we know what chilli powder is.

And finally nobody eats fucking jellied eels it was a victorian era poverty food and even then only in london.

Also our chocolate is better than yours because we dont put the weird chemical in it that makes it taste like sick. Eat a kit kat and die mad about it.

Draw what you love the most, don't listen to any advice or any teaching, just do what you want and experiment a lot with materials like kid's crayons or anything because if you love drawing you WILL find what you enjoy the most!!!

Ruby Kitkat "made with ruby cocoa beans" like it tasted fucking amazing but they only sold it for half a year in my country. Second is penaut butter

My mom sent me a huge sampler of Japanese snacks. Not sure where she ordered it from but I'm having fun going through all of it and since these are mostly things I've never eaten and that you can't really find here, I felt compelled to start reviewing them.

Misc Snacks

キャベツ太郎 (Cabbage Tarou) - Does not taste at all like cabbage but I liked it. It's like if a cheese puff was flavoured with worcestershire sauce and topped with seaweed flakes. I could see myself eating a big bag of these in one sitting. 5/5

チョコチョットフレーク (Choco Chotto Flake) - Chocolate flakes packed together with a semi-sweet flavour. It's like a tiny dense rice cake. Pretty good. 4/5

Kit-Kats

Wasabi - Unique flavour, though with a name like that I was expecting it to be spicy and it isn't at all. I liked it but it's not my fave. 3/5

Apple - It smells just like apple juice, but the taste is kind of odd. It's dark chcolate and sweet apple together. Maybe other people would like it but I didn't care for it much. 2/5

Strawberry Chocolate Gateaux - This shit slapped. The strawberry was super tart but it went really well with the chocolate. 5/5

Tirol Chocolates

Not much to say about these. They're little chocolates with either jelly or cookie filling.

Green Tea Mochi - 3/5

Bis Milk Chocolate - 4/5

White & Cookies - 3/5

Caramel Apples: Favourite Halloween candy?

Byakuran’s favourite Halloween candy? Obviously it’s those chocolate marshmallow pumpkins and witches. He’s someone who has a real sweet tooth and marshmallows are one of his go-to treats all during the year anyway, so it just makes sense that this is his go-to Halloween treat.

Uni is really happy with anything. She’s just grateful that anyone is giving her free candy and she’s not going to be picky about what she gets.

Kikyo, honestly, is probably the only person in the world who actually really enjoys seeing those single packs of raisins on Halloween. He doesn’t have a huge sweet tooth, and most of his Halloween candy gets eaten by other people but he just really does like raisins.

Zakuro doesn’t eat a lot of candy and chocolates. A lot of his Halloween candy gets eaten by Byakuran and Bluebell. The only thing he insists they don’t touch, and what he gets really excited to see tossed in his Halloween bag is soda. When people hand out cans of soda, or even juice, it makes him happier than any candy could.

Bluebell doesn’t actually have a favourite Halloween candy. She likes all of them pretty equally and what matters to her is how much she gets. She’s someone who’s not going to be happy with just a single bucket worth of Halloween candy. She needs that full pillowcase by the end of the night to be happy.

Daisy loves candy that is more taffy like in nature. Things like molasses kisses, Airheads, or even actual salt-water taffy make him really happy to get. He gets to eat them longer, because they take a lot of chewing, so he gets to enjoy the candy longer and the flavours tend to stick around longer.

Torikabuto is a monk completely possessed by a cursed mask. He doesn’t need to eat and the other’s take him out trick or treating, without even putting him in a costume because his normal appearance is scary enough, to get more candy for themselves.

Shoichi is going with Kit-Kats every time. They’re nice and easy to eat, even when his hands are busy with any of his other work and projects, and because you break them apart, he can eat one piece and save the rest for another time.

Gamma is a fan of Rockets. He’s actually the only one in the family who really loves them, so he’ll sacrifice most of his candy in exchange for everyone else giving him those.

Iris Hepburn is a chocoholic! Any chocolate bar will make her pretty happy, though she especially loves peanut butter cups.

Spanner is one of those rare people who actually get really excited when he sees suckers in his Halloween trick or treat baskets. He doesn’t mind Blow Pops and Tootsie Rolls, but his favourite are those apple caramel suckers that only really show up around Halloween.

Tazaru is honestly a little boring in his candy tastes when it comes to Halloween. Those little fun-sized packs of Starbursts always get him so happy.

Much like Bluebell, it’s not what he’s getting to Nosaru so much as how much he’s getting. He, Bluebell, and Uni probably have fun little competitions to see who gets the most candy. For Nosaru, his highlight is always when people pass out the full-size candy or sodas. Bigger is always better in his opinion.

The 'hunky dory' stuff is more behaviour management for the drivers. If they're pretending everything is hunky dory then that's not going to tip into a fight. If they're not pretending it very easily could. You can see it in some of the videos. Pierre wasn't happy that Esteban refused to try certain kit kat flavours but he carried on because it's all 'hunky dory'. He also refrained when Esteban didn't get how Guess Who works, because it's all 'hunky dory'. By setting the expectation that's what it's going to look like, you make it true. Meanwhile they can say whatever they want when they're alone, like on the podcast Pierre did.

I actually think the investors wouldn't mind seeing them act out. Acting out = more attention = more airtime = more airtime for your sponsor logos = able to bring in more money and sponsors.

But I know that multiple teams are calling both of them, so if Alpine doesn't manage the behaviour, one of them is eventually going to snap and run away!

Ice Cream on the Beach

Summary: I’m giving Dieter’s tattoos an origin story! And I’ve added a few more of them and we’ll learn all about them over ice cream

The heat of summer snuck through the window like a creeper. You were hoping that watching a film based in the snow would trick your mind into thinking it was cooler than the hellscape you were living in. Unfortunately, the antics of the so-called protagonists were putting you off your viewing. The soft buzzing of your phone easily distracted you.

“Hi, Dieter.”

“Hey honey cakes. So…what are you doing?”

“Not much. Just watched Frozen.”

There was a long pause of disbelief, “You did not.”

“I did.”

“You watched the animated film Frozen?”

“No, I watched a different film called Frozen?”

“They haven’t done a weird horror version have they?”

“Oh, I’d actually watch that. But no, this is just some thriller which happens to have the same title.” Dieter gave a noise of interest, so you continued, “Some idiots get stuck on a ski chair lift and they can’t get off because wolves.”

“How did they get stuck there?”

“Circumstances that I hope to never be in.”

“Speaking of Frozen, do you want to go get some ice cream?”

“You know I’m always up for ice cream.”

“I know, that’s why I asked. Are you free to go get some now?”

“Absolutely. Where are you?”

“Look out the window.”

You got up off the couch and looked out the window. What could be mistaken for a homeless man was none other than your boyfriend. You gave a little wave, and he waved in return. You quickly changed into something suitable for going out, grabbed your bag, and almost ran down the stairs. Trying not to run in to him over excitement of seeing him, you gave Dieter a hug, inhaling his manly smell which you missed.

“You just happened to be outside knowing I’d be home?”

“I wasn’t stalking you, if that’s what you’re saying.”

“You don’t seem the stalking type.”

“Oh good. I’ve had one too many to know the type.”

“What?”

“We should get going.”

You ambled over to the beach, people traffic not amounting to much which suited you as you didn’t like crowds much and Dieter preferred not getting swamped by fans. Although he was hard to recognise as he was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap, hiding his face from all but those closest to him. To the unsuspecting and unobservant, you were just a cute couple holding hands and walking to the beach for some ice cream.

The choice over what flavour to choose was one which was met with much pondering from you but not from Dieter. Finally, you decided on mango hibiscus.

“Do you want a cup or cone?”

“I think a cup because I take forever eating ice cream.”

Dieter had chosen two huge scoops of Kit Kat in a waffle cone. Now you were both sitting on the sand, well actually, Dieter removed an outer layer to act as a makeshift blanket. People were still out on the ocean, sailing past on boats or jet skis, the occasional windsail flying about the horizon.

You were not looking at the ocean, you were distracted looking at Dieter attacking his cone. The way his mouth sucked up a piece of Kit Kat or the way his tongue expertly manoeuvred ice cream from the cone to his mouth, occasionally licking his luscious lips. You tried to distract yourself and looked at the ocean activity for a talking subject.

“So, you do any extreme sports when you’re not hanging out with me?”

“No, doing my own stunts is bad enough. I was once with this guy who liked to do it while bungee jumping and…”

“You did not!”

“It was once and once was enough. Thankfully I came out undamaged, but I was sore for days afterwards.”

“Yikes.”

Dieter looked over at you and forgot what he was about to say. You were slowly licking off your spoon and he found himself staring at your tongue. Your lips were tinted slightly red from the hibiscus making them very tempting to kiss.

“So,” he coughed, “Are you into sports?”

“Oh god no. Made me really stand out.”

“Yeah, I stood out at school. I was a theatre kid getting picked on by the football team.”

“I was the weird art kid at school. And not liking football added to my weirdness. Except this was Australian football.”

“What’s the difference?”

You could only shrug and take another spoonful of ice cream. Dieter had finished his ice cream and leaned back, his arms getting some sunlight, his tattoos on full display.

“Dieter, do you mind if I ask the meaning behind your tattoos?”

“No, go ahead.”

“So, what’s the meaning behind the triangles?”

“Nothing. They’re triangles and nothing more.”

“Oh,” you took another small scoop of ice cream, “Maybe I should’ve asked the story of how you got them?”

“Now that I can tell you.” And he sat up as if to regal a story to a gathered audience, you nodded to him waiting in anticipation. “I’m pausing for dramatic effect.”

He leaned over, showing you the triangle on his left wrist, “So, I was with this tattoo artist girl, and she convinced me into getting a traditional style tattoo.”

“Is that where they hammer little needles into you?”

“Yeah, well, I was high at the time I agreed to it, but not when I was getting it done and turns out she wasn’t that experienced, and it hurt, and I stopped before it could get any more elaborate than this triangle.”

You could only wince at imagining the pain his wrist went under. You gestured to his other arm. “And the other triangle?”

He moved his right arm into your hand, showing the solid triangle on his forearm. “Now this is me learning the hard way to not get anyone’s name tattooed.”

“Oh?”

“I tried getting it removed but could only afford two sessions at the time and it really hurt and took a while to heal in time so decided to just get it covered with this triangle.”

“Was it the typical heart one?”

“So typical it’s embarrassing! But I was young and stupid at the time.”

“Do you have any other tattoos?”

“I may have a tiny Dumbo tattoo somewhere, I’ll have to show you one day” he teased which made you laugh. You noticed a tiny tattoo on his right wrist. It was a tiny Mickey Mouse silhouette above a coma.

“What about this one?”

He got a bit quiet, “That’s a semi colon.”

“A semi colon? Why a semi colon?”

“You don’t know?” you shook your head, he gently removed his arm from you hand and started touching the small tattoo, “Um, it’s nothing really. What about you? Do you have any tattoos?”

You knew he changed the subject on you, but you didn’t pressure him about it. “I do actually. I have one on my lower back.”

You leaned forward and lifted your shirt a little to reveal the tattoo there. Dieter peered and then asked, “Is that a bat?”

“It is!” you leaned back, noticing Dieter looked a little dejected at not seeing that sliver of skin anymore.

“Why a bat?”

“Why not? Bats always seem to get this bad reputation from horror films but really, they’re cute and fluffy.”

“Like me?”

“Yeah, like you.”

You both stared at each other for a while. The hue had changed from warm yellow to soft orange showing how long you two had been sitting talking to one another.

“Fuck, I didn’t realise how late it’s getting.”

“I think sunsets are quite romantic.”

“They are honey cakes. But then I also know you watch too many films where bad things happen after sunset.”

“That is true.”

“Can I walk you home?”

“Of course.”

The soft orange was slowly turning a darker hue and the dark blue ink was bleeding through the incoming night sky. Your hands were once again intertwined, you leaning into him a bit more than before. Headlights caught your attention and you turned to look at a car crawling along behind you.

“Dieter is that car following us?”

He turned to look “Yeah, but it’s my driver so it’s okay.” He kissed the top of your head to reassure you and it helped. “Just making sure you’re safe honey cakes.”

“Well, I was taught to just outrun the weaker person in case of danger.”

“What?”

“But I won’t in this case.”

You both stopped outside your apartment. You felt very reluctant to let go of his hand, almost going as far as inviting him up to stay in his company. He must have sensed that you wanted to but kept up his gentleman barrier even though he himself wanted to stay in your company.

“Well, I don’t want to keep my driver waiting all night,” you were avoiding looking at his face in case it was sad, “Can I kiss you goodnight?”

You had to look up this time, nodding, blinking tears away that were threatening to form. Dieter gently cradled your face and gave you the tenderest kiss, as soft and warm as the orange fading in the sky.

Comfort foods for Dethklok

Nathan- Doritos and chocolate milk obviously. He’d especially love the super spicy chips or the bbq or ranch flavoured chips

Skwisgaar- I’m not sure if he’s too fond of food but he’d like the Swedish saffron buns. Or grilled fish idk

Murderface- I feel like he’ll love anything with cheese. Like put extra cheese on everything and it’ll be good. Like Mac n Cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, cheese pizzas, you name it. And if he’s lactose intolerant, MF wouldn’t care he’d still eat cheese anyway

Toki- definitely candy like chocolate bars or any gummy candies. I feel like Toki would love Japanese candy like konpeito, Pocky or Japanese Kit Kat flavours

Pickles: obviously cinnamon buns and beer. His favourite food combo. He’d stuff his face full of them if he can. And French fries dipped in ketchup or hot sauce.

i think tokis candy intake is definitely super duper monitored by everyone, pickles and skwisgaar especially. Skwisgaar is always taking his sweets away when he sees it fit, not letting him get too much in his system because of his diabetes. Other than that i think he enjoys baby carrots! he seems to me like he’d care the most about what he eats (candy aside)

Can i just said it’s so funny that cinnamon buns are pickles favorite snack/food. he’s so me. it’s so silly.

i would like to thank the going sluts gc for helping me with this (specifically @hotgirlvernon and @underratedlovedone)

Seungcheol: those strawberry candies that only grandmas carry around and appear randomly in candy dishes you know the ones

Jeonghan: sour patch kids. i don’t think this really needs an explanation tbh

Joshua: hi chew (idk what this is but i’m gonna say it’s accurate)

Junhui: skittles that man is the whole rainbow and then some he be acting fruity af

Soonyoung: warheads. i don’t think this one needs an explanation either in all honesty

Wonwoo: almond joy. i don’t really understand this one either but it was a unanimous decision

Jihoon: coca cola flavoured gummies. he’s a cola fanatic so this one makes complete sense imo

Seokmin: airheads (i do not understand this one for the third time but the name of the candy makes enough sense to me)

Mingyu: those assorted boxes of chocolate you can buy at the dollar store

Minghao: matcha flavoured kit kats; these literally just scream minghao right down to the flavour.

Seungkwan: potchi (no explanation for this. don’t know what it is but thank you to @berrryshortcake for this input)
