It was Bishop Carrell who spotted some workers unearthing a large stone on the hill in Lewisburg—he thought the stone looked so big and sturdy, why not build a church on top of it? ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ That stone became the church's cornerstone, laid Palm Sunday, April 9, 1854. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Around 1869, Father Andreas Michael spearheaded improvements to the old church, including construction of a new rectory, likely this priest's house. Father Michael left St. John's for an Illinois parish in 1870, and tragically perished in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ The St. John's you can see today from all around, with its 163-foot-high steeple, was completed in 1924. The steeple is the same length as the church itself. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ As for the priest's house, it's suffered some sacrilegious treatment. An older picture (swipe) shows the home in brown. Today's blue actually looks like spray paint.
