13, punk.
13. The muse is on the battlefield and they have to take a terrible decision.
“Kirrel, look at me,” Tess urged, giving the Leafman’s arm a shake. Sweat rolled from the end of her nose and plopped against his helmet, but the soldier didn’t seem to hear. He must be alive. I can feel his pulse. Tightening her grip on his wrist, Tess shifted, bracing herself against the branch better to pull him back up. “Kirrel. Kirrel, come on! Work with me, here!”
A child’s cry stole her attention for a moment. A Jinn boy, no more than eleven or twelve stood between two younger children and a pair of Boggans. “Kirrel!” she croaked, shaking the Leafman more urgently. “Kirrel, wake up, please! I need your help!”
Silence.
A child yelled.
“When checking the pulse, make sure to only apply gentle pressure with your forefingers and not your thumb. Your thumb has a pulse of its own, which can be misleading…”
Tess glanced to the children, then back to the limp body. But what if…
A chorus of screams.
She let go, springing to her feet and throwing herself into the nearest of the two Boggans, eyes burning, but dry.

What cages dimensions do you suggest as a minimum for cockatiels? I know the general guidelines suggest enough space for the bird to be able to extend its wings, but it's a little hard to determine with boxed cages or purchasing over the internet. Thanks!
Generally, it's recommended that a cage for a single cockatiel be no smaller than 20" x 20" x 20".  In reality, though, it can be impossible to find a perfectly cubical cage, so the rule I've always heard is to go by the volume of the cage rather than its dimensions.  20" x 20" x 20" = 8000 cubic inches, so any cage that has dimensions that multiply out to be 8000 cubic inches or greater should be fine. :)

I intended to do this earlier
Rule 1: Always post the rules
Rule 2: Answer the questions from the one who tagged you, then write eleven more.
Rule 3: Tag 11 people and link them in the post (sorry, I'm just going to tag the people because I don't have the skills to do the link thing)
1. What kind of literature do you enjoy the most, and why? I am a big fan of journalistic articles and research documents on things I find interesting (if you put a scholarly article on why elephants chew to the left instead of the right I probably wouldn't read it) I love NatGeo magazines and the way they write their articles. It isn't like anything I have read before and there isn't anything like it. As for the research ones I like knowing as much as possible about anything and everything.
2. If you could be a teacher, what would you want to teach? Funny this should be asked, I was actually studying to be an English Literature teacher for high school. So I would probably go to that.
3. Name one virtue and one flaw of your respective nation, from your perspective. Virtue: We've come a really long way in a short amount of time and have managed to mature quickly Flaw: We tend to get in over our heads and forget that this country needs help too.
4. Do you think that a mandatory civil service period (police, military, fire, healthcare, etc.) would be beneficial? No, I think there would be people who would want to get out at any cost. It is better to have it set up the way we do now, that way we have people who actually want to take that job and are willing to take all the risks. If someone doesn't want to do something it could really harm others, especially if you think about fire/ems, and any branch really. "If you don't do your job right others may not make it through the night." (or so my father says)
5. What professions do you think deserve more attention and respect? Police, fire, EMS, anything that actually helps the society. The unsung heroes basically. I wrote an essay on this for a college course. The people who risk their lives and their health for others deserve more respect and attention. But all in moderation or it could all go to their heads.
6. Do you prefer older movies like Casablanca or new ones such as The Avengers? Ahhh, both? I'm on the fence about this one. It depends on which movie or which genre.
7. If you had to work in a job that demanded you be outside all year, what would it be? If I could move I would pick lifeguarding. But if I couldn't move I would pick something in forestry.
8. What do you think has been the greatest scientific advancement in the past fifty years? There have been so many, I would probably go for something that current EMS use and our new knowledge of which medicines do what and what to do in the event of heart attacks and heart failures. Pacemakers and all the advancements in heart surgeries would probably be, in my opinion, the best medical advancements.
9. If you could trade places with someone, who would it be? I wouldn't want to swap places with anyone, I'm pretty content with my life though I may be stressed it is all starting to look up :D
10. If you could travel to any period in history without affecting the timeline, where would you choose to go? Oh man, maybe the Norther Renaissance period, that would be a fun time to walk around in.
11. Do you think that America should hand off responsibility of foreign affairs to allies, or should America become more proactive across the globe? This is really tricky. I think in some cases America should take a step back and assess what is going on in the world and this country. More questions should be asked like, "Do we have the money?" "Do we have the resources?" "Will the people support this move?" "How will this help/hurt our current relationship with X country?" I feel like we run around with guns blazing trying to make a utopia that simply is not attainable in human standards. ~Questions: 1. If you could change one thing about yourself would you, and if so, what would it be? 2. What is your favourite tv show/movie?  3. Is there anything you would want to do but won't due to some reason or another? Why?  4. When you are feeling down or had a bad day, what do you do to make it better? 5. Where is one place you are dying to travel to or live? 6. What is something most people don’t know about you?  7. What is an ideal day like in your life? 8. If you could spend one day with any celebrity, who would it be? 9. What is your favourite time of year? 10. What are you passionate about? 11. What three superpowers would you have? And why those three?

lionheartedowl replied to your post: Who’s gonna be at New York Comic Con? ...
Are you gonna be there on Saturday?? :D
I will be at NYCC EVERYDAY trapped behind a booth for Level Up Studios. Come see me! There are three different booths though, so you might have to ask which one I'm at if you find a booth and I'm not there.

Hey guys! I was just curious if you guys had any preferences for cage cleaning routines as far as safe soap brands or ways to cut down on mess and seed spray.
Hi!  I personally am pretty paranoid about using any cleaning products on my birds’ cages, so I use a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and hot water.  I actually tend to use vinegar and water in a previously unused spray bottle (like, one I bought at a store that had never previously held anything) as the primary cleaning agent in my home, just because I want to minimize the chances my birds are ever exposed to anything hazardous.  It works very well for cleaning bird poop off of furniture and carpets, too, and I’ve never had any color transfer because of it (although if you have brightly-colored furniture, you might want to do a spot-test in an inconspicuous area just to make sure it won’t bleed).  For detachable things like food and water dishes or perches, dishwashing soaps like Dawn are good, as long as you are sure to thoroughly rinse the soap off so your bird can’t ingest any.  Please DO NOT use dishwashing liquids that contain bleach or bleach alternatives!  Mysafebirdstore.com also has a list of bird-safe cleaning solutions available for purchase if you don’t mind ordering cleaning supplies online.
As far as containing seed hulls/food mess, we have a small, hand-held vacuum that I use to vacuum around the birds’ cages every night after I put them to bed.  Obviously this doesn’t STOP them from flinging food and stuff, but it does help keep their area relatively clean on a daily basis.  We also do a weekly deep-clean of our whole apartment, which in part consists of moving the birds’ cages and vacuuming under/behind them and anywhere else they might have flung food debris.  My cockatiel also has a Vision cage, which has an acrylic panel around the bottom where the food dishes are that stops any debris from being flung out of the cage, and her area tends to stay much cleaner than that of the other birds whose cages don’t have the acrylic panel.  If you don’t want to get a whole new cage, I found this company that sells acrylic panels that attach to the cage with wingnuts, but I haven’t used them myself, so I can’t vouch for their effectiveness.
Some other things I’ve heard of are people putting one of those plastic office chair mats under their birds’ cages so they can just sweep up the mess instead of having to vacuum, or using one of the “seed containment” products that I’ve seen in pet stores.  The “seed containment” products tend to be a little strip of clear, flexible plastic or an elasticized band of netting that you put around the bottom of your bird’s cage, and then it catches any food debris that might get flung out.  We’ve actually tried to use these in the past, but the issue we had every time is that the product was never big enough to fit around our birds’ cages.  :/
I hope this helps!  Birds can be messy creatures (my green cheek seems to go out of his way to poop on the furniture, lol), but I’ve found that just setting aside ten or twenty minutes every night to clean up the mess they made that day has drastically cut down on how gross our house gets between deep cleanings, lol.

lionheartedowl replied to your post: About 15-20 min worth of target traini...
So, what’s the goal of target training?
It's a way of gaining the bird's trust and entertaining them. Once you get them to realize that they have to go and touch the "target," in this case, the black ball, you can eventually teach them tricks.
