on an extremely obscure not-ff14 note: I finished the AI Somnium sequel and no one i know has played these games so i gotta get my thoughts out here:
i think i’ve learned that i MUCH prefer stories on a smaller scale vs stories involving The Fate Of Humanity or whatever, and i think that really contributes to why i liked the first one over the sequel lmao. i’m very much a character focused person, and more localized stakes are an easier way to explore that.
that said, it wasn’t a bad game! IMO Uchikoshi’s writing style always kind of borders on feeling like he’s half winging it, but he’s really good at setting the wackiness to an OBSCENELY high level early on so that you just accept completely off-the-wall things at face value. this is a compliment. i think it’s great.
but the sequel feels a lot weaker in the sense that i’m not unconvinced they thought of a neat premise and, in the process of trying to figure out how it worked, kept going ‘ok wait but wouldn’t it be cool if ALSO--’ and then ended up with 50 neat mysteries that had no satisfying conclusion. I didn’t hate the ending(s) but i didn’t feel much about them, either. I left the 1st game feeling satisfied/vindicated, i left the 2nd one going ‘oh. huh.’
that said, i am notorious for being shit at finishing games unless they really get their hooks in me lmao. so far dragon age is the only series where i buy sequels on sight and marathon play them because otherwise most of the time even if i ENJOY a game i am unable to return to it once interrupted. if i take a break for 1 day there’s an 80% chance i’m never coming back. so it probably says something that i continued to return to this one until i’d gotten everything, even if i was ultimately a little meh about it.
so... make that 2 series in the ‘my brain will actually complete these thank god’ spot, i guess lmao. i wish there was MORE than that because i want to actually be able to finish games i like but you know how it goes
