Knight & Knight
Ngl, kinda fell for Koshigaya-san at first sight in ch1. XD *Note: This is set after ch42 and mainly after the conclusion of the RIMT job (which ends with ch47), just so I can cover all my spoilerish bases. :3
Fic: "Knight & Knight" [FFN] [AO3]
Pairings/Characters: pre?Sakuragi Kana/Koshigaya Hitomi
Rating: K
Words: ~1,080
Additional info: romance, friendship, fluff, 3rd person POV
Summary: It's been like this from the beginning: Koshigaya saves her time and again. But Sakuragi wonders if she'll ever be the one saving Koshigaya.
Koshigaya Hitomi is always there to save the day.
It's been that way since the beginning, Sakuragi thinks time and again, and that hasn't changed much since, even as Koshigaya and the others at Magilumiere assure their newbie that Sakuragi is coming into her own as a fresh-faced magical girl. The team reminds Sakuragi often that they both want and need her, which instills some confidence, yeah.
But sometimes Sakuragi thinks of how she even got involved with them from the start, and how, even though sure she helped Koshigaya with some magic tech that fateful afternoon, Koshigaya not only saved the day but literally caught Sakuragi in her arms. And that happens still, from time to time, in the field even now.
      Like today.
Koshigaya might not have caught Sakuragi physically or any of the rest of them in her arms like the knight-in-shining armor she is, but Sakuragi can't help but think that this accidental job at the Research Institute for Magical Technology wouldn't've been possible if not for Koshigaya's insane level of bravery. Going up against this unknown factor, a group C Kaii, as Akasaka called it, proved nearly too much for four of them to handle…and yet they did, with Koshigaya's wildcard move of cramming her broom in one of its many mouths before the girls launched an all-out counterattack.
But outside, after AST's Tsuchiba is gone and Director Koshigaya leaves and it's just the two of them once the RIMT thanks them profusely once more, Koshigaya heaves a small sigh and offers a small smile only Sakuragi gets to see. And she thanks Sakuragi, for believing in her. "You always do," she tacks on with a little chuckle and the tiniest shake of her head.
The unexpected gratitude and this softer side to her senpai make Sakuragi's heart skip a beat, and she blurts that they should grab lunch together before she can think too hard on it.
Thankfully, Koshigaya doesn't miss a beat, grinning in response. (See? Always rescuing the moment even, this one.)
With this morning's…now afternoon's…job successfully finished, the pair transforms back and gets set on their trek back to the office by way of the ramen shop Sakuragi looked up earlier. It's a little bigger than the local place they often go to closer to home, so the girls grab a table and sit across from each other instead of side by side, like usual.
"You sure about this, Kanacchi?" the blonde asks as they each skim the menu.
Sakuragi does a double-take, but she doesn't want to go back on her promise. "Of course. Pick anything you want, toppings included—my treat, Koshigaya-san."
Koshigaya laughs, mumbles, "What's with that?" but there's a rosiness to her cheeks at the gesture, because this is different from when Midorikawa feeds everyone in the office.
Sakuragi knows this, and it's partly why she asked Koshigaya out, because she's wondered when the last time was someone went out of their way just for her alone… Honestly, she muses when their drinks arrive and Koshigaya launches into some bickering about Tsuchiba's attitude, Sakuragi's wondered a lot about Koshigaya lately, especially when the pigtailed magical girl knows her eyes and brain need a break from memorizing manuals and she catches herself instead staring at her senpai. She thinks that maybe her eyes have a habit of wandering, but—if that were the case—then wouldn't she gaze blankly at the others or even at inanimate objects around the office?
Why, every time, are her eyes drawn like magnets to Koshigaya Hitomi only?
Sakuragi would call her beautiful—breathtaking, without a doubt, especially when in action—if asked, but her thoughts trip her up whenever Koshigaya catches her staring, such as now, and Sakuragi splutters into her drink.
Koshigaya laughs again, but it's gentle, not cruel, and she passes her kouhai extra napkins. "Hey, hey, hey, Kanacchi…! The food hasn't even arrived yet. Plus—" She sighs and leans heavily back into her booth; it's a tired motion only Sakuragi's seen, and just a handful of times, at that. "—I really wanna stuff my face and talk about anything else to forget he was there, too."
…ah, right. That's the only recent change between them, Koshigaya confiding in Sakuragi about her family. Sakuragi had been shocked to see Director Koshigaya at the RIMT, but Koshigaya had handled her father well, when they'd seen him in parting—or so Sakuragi thought. Maybe it's been a bigger surprise than she realized…? She frowns.
"Ah, don't worry about it. C'mon, smile, Kanacchi." Koshigaya tilts her head Sakuragi's way, wearing a small smile herself. But it's tired, like the rest of her body language.
…oh. Sakuragi blinks at the scene before her, finally piecing it together and embarrassed she hadn't seen it before. But it makes sense now.
Koshigaya Hitomi is always there to save the day.
But there's no one there to save Koshigaya, and Sakuragi wants to be that one.
She can feel her cheeks reddening, so Sakuragi slurps down more of her iced fruit drink in a lame attempt to cool her face down, but realization is like a struck match that refuses to flame out. Her thoughts on—no, her feelings for—her senpai might've been silly yearning before. But now? Now… Now Sakuragi isn't thinking about Koshigaya doing the saving or Sakuragi having the chance to catch her senpai in her arms or maybe even sweep her off her feet. Now, she can see that her brave senpai is not as strong as she presents, and Sakuragi wants to protect her from the things that do actually make her sad or, hell, even scared!
Koshigaya quirks an eyebrow, wondering to where Sakuragi's mind has flown. Then she shrugs and fiddles with the crumpled-up paper wrapper from her straw on the table, pushing it to and fro.
Sakuragi musters a small smile for Koshigaya before she gently flicks the wrapper aside. She catches the blonde's eye and her smile widens, as she stills Koshigaya's hand, loosely hooking her finger around Koshigaya's.
The gesture is childish but a comfort, because she might be tired after today, but that rosiness returns to her cheeks, and that grin only Sakuragi gets to see returns.
So…yes, Sakuragi admits to herself as they pull apart just as their food arrives, these feelings might've been friendship or admiration or yearning before—
—but they're something else entirely now, aren't they?
GAHHHH. MAGICAL GIRLS IN LOVE. MAGICAL GIRLS IN LOVE. MAGICAL GIRLS IN LOVE. Honestly, this rly shouldn't be surprising to me considering my first ever fandom from childhood (*eyes Sailor Moon*), but yeah. XDDD I have a handful of ships for Magilumi, but I think Hitomi is just—so neat?? Who wouldn't fall for her? XDDD Later chapters have cemented my OTPs more, but I'm deffo down to board Hitokana from time to time, bc they're just so cute. But I also rly like Kana's viewpoint here, that Hitomi's always the protector, but no one's rly there to protect her/be her knight-in-shining armor (I mean, not super the case, since we see in flashbacks that she has the full support of Magilumiere, but still!). Since I've written Hitokae once before, I have another idea coming soon for that ship, but first—more MAGICAL GIRLS IN LOVE! 8D (Meaning, a diff OTP, *lol*.) And, of course, Magilumi fanart. I rly dig drawing everyone. :3c

started reading Magilumiere co. ltd. today, really fun manga honestly, kind of a magical girl-workplace dramedy shounen thing
however ever since the plot of part 2 started I've started wondering
is this quirky cast of underdogs going to commit an actual crime at some point?
not because it's some sort of moral imperative, I just think it's sort of vaguely in the direction they're going, and it'd be funny as hell

The 9th volume of Magilumiere will hit Japanese shelves on October 4th 2023 and *CRIES LOUDLY* it matches the cover of volume 8.
Oh and don't forget to preorder the first English-language print volume out in the US on March 19th 2024!
Edit:
While I remember, Magilumiere is one of the titles being featured in a new range of Jump Store products. The range, dubbed 'JUMP NEW POWER GENERATIONS', features popular emerging titles from Jump on three kinds of products:
Acrylic stand
Mini can badge (set of 3)
Aurora shine sticker
All items will be available on October 4th (in physical stores as well as online).
Tumblr media
I definitely want to track down that acrylic stand (to go alongside my existing Magilumiere stands). It's nice to see some steady (but not outrageously well known) titles get a little nod in the Jump Store range.

I'm sincerely glad that MagiLumiere has gotten an anime adaptation confirrmed and scheduled to debut next year; but the fact that MahoAko has gotten an anime adaptation confirmation BEFORE MagiLumiere did and will debut in January, is just simply homophobiqué™️ in my opinion.

Love Language
My brain is abuzz with a million ideas for the Magilumiere charries and I love them, halp. ;w;
Fic: "Love Language" [FFN] [AO3] [pfio]
Pairings/Characters: Sakuragi Kana, pre? one-sided?Midorikawa Kaede/Koshigaya Hitomi, Shigemoto Kouji, & Nikoyama Kazuo
Rating: K
Words: ~2,230
Additional info: friendship, fluff, romance, 3rd person POV
Summary: After another busy but successful day of completing orders, the staff of Magilumiere kick back with a little barbeque to enjoy the rest of a gorgeous evening…and Sakuragi takes special note of the things their capable Midorikawa prepped just for tonight.
      "Compression transmission!"
Sakuragi caught her breath while her senpai held steady with their company-branded flash drive aimed at the remaining, straggling monsters crawling away from them in front of the motorcycle shop.
      "Extension: Wit!"
She blinked and, the next thing Sakuragi knew, Koshigaya had sucked up the final Kaii. The flash drive snapped close, and the younger magical girl turned her broom around to face the blonde. "That was the final one, Koshigaya-san," Sakuragi confirmed. She wiped some sweat from her brow but spared her colleague and friend a beaming smile. "Thirty-seven Kaii in total, but we did it."
"Not without effort—or without breaking a sweat," Koshigaya remarked, catching Sakuragi's tired expression and sharing in the latter's smile with a grin of her own. She pocketed the USB.
"Koshigaya-san, Sakuragi-san, that's a job well done," President Shigemoto said over their open channel.
"Thanks, Shachou-chan," Koshigaya replied. She hovered next to Sakuragi and shook some Kaii-looking goop off her boot with a grunt.
"After the past two hours you spent chasing down the Kaii in the auto district, I don't want the pair of you to fly back in your drained state."
Sakuragi perked up at that, and she landed on the ground alongside Koshigaya as she considered their options. "The train station's not far… Maybe a five-minute walk? Back…that way," the pig-tailed girl stated, looking up the street end that merged into a larger throughway.
"Good. Take the train back to the office; tickets are on me." There was a pause on his end before Shigemoto added, "It'll give us time to prepare, too…" Then again, he mumbled that last bit, so Sakuragi wasn't exactly certain she'd caught his words correctly.
The magical girl pair transformed back into their civilian forms, and Sakuragi found a comfortable position to lean her broom against her left shoulder as they began their trek towards the station. She furrowed her brow and pinched her chin. "You heard him, too, right, Koshigaya-san?"
      "Hmm?"
"The president." Sakuragi dodged the large end of the blonde's broom, since the taller girl had it stretched across her shoulders. "He said, 'It'll give us time to prepare.' Prepare what? Did he and Midorikawa-san line up another job for us today?"
Koshigaya hummed to herself and shrugged, making her broom heave up and down, but she made sure to avoid Sakuragi this time. "Not to my knowledge…? Plus it's getting kinda late in the day… Ahhh, I'd definitely wanna call it a day anyway! But." She raised her eyebrows at Sakuragi and shook her head, her long hair flowing freely behind her now that she was out of uniform and it was down. "Knowing the president, it could be anything, so."
Sakuragi hummed in agreement. She'd been a part of the Magilumiere Company for…goodness, had a month snuck up on her already? Either way, she was learning the ropes quickly, some things picked up in the field alongside Koshigaya and many things memorized from the countless references Shigemoto and Midorikawa located in the office for her, though Sakuragi had the sneaking suspicion some books were newer purchases for their newbie.
Still, she liked this work, and Sakuragi had figured out what Koshigaya had learned a long time ago, how to go with President Shigemoto's flow, no matter the surprising twists and turns.
…although, that said, both Sakuragi and Koshigaya were confused to return nearly half an hour later and find the office empty. "Weird. Shachou-chan's basically always the last to leave himself," Koshigaya said.
Sakuragi put away their brooms and checked every last corner. "No signs of Midorikawa-san or Nikoyama-san… Ah, wait. Koshigaya-san—" She beckoned her colleague over to Midorikawa's computer and pointed to the sticky left on the blank screen. "Isn't that—?"
"Eh? Kaede-chan's handwriting. 'Koshigaya-san, Sakuragi-san'—and an arrow?" Koshigaya narrowed her eyes but followed the sign…and found another sticky with another arrow on her right. He'd left maybe half a dozen, in a straight line, pointing them from his desk back to the front door.
"Oh! They want us up on the roof?" Sakuragi read as the older girl plucked the last sticky from the back of the door. Sakuragi frowned. "Couldn't they have just, well…told us that earlier? The roof's only for takeoffs, after all." She pursed her lips. Oh, no. What if this were some ploy? What if Midorikawa had been forced to write these?! What if he hadn't written these at all?! Whatever awaited them upstairs—
Koshigaya clamped a reassuring hand on the pink-haired worrywart's shoulder. "Ah, yeah, it's a bit odd…but perhaps it's another job in the end, Kanacchi," she admitted with a sigh. Koshigaya scratched the back of her head, paused, and darted to the closet. She was back with their brooms in a few seconds. "On the off-chance it's more work," she said.
Sakuragi nodded her thanks. She had a good tactical head in the field, but Koshigaya's coolness in their daily life really did come to their aid at times like these…!
They headed to the staircase with Koshigaya in the lead, although the taller girl paused a few steps up, to sniff the air. She narrowed her eyes again and poured on the speed, but her excitement gave her away by the time she burst through the rooftop door.
"Ah, good job today!" Midorikawa said from the middle of their gathering. Nikoyama waved with one hand before he returned to typing on his laptop, and Shigemoto, nearest the girls, nodded to the pair.
"A barbeque…!" Koshigaya all but dropped her broom, her eyes bright and her mouth watering like a hungry puppy, when she saw the spread. Thankfully, Sakuragi grabbed a hold of the worn device and set it and her own by the roof door.
"What's the occasion?" Sakuragi asked. She was used to grabbing a bite out with Koshigaya or having lunch inside the office, but this definitely felt like a rare treat. What a surprise, too, even to see their coder taking a break—although, on closer inspection, Sakuragi noted that Nikoyama was eating non-greasy foods with one hand and coding on his laptop with the other.
"We never had a proper welcome party for you, Sakuragi-san," Midorikawa pointed out while turning some skewers on the grill. "But it's also been a lot busier since you joined us, so we wanted to celebrate our recent success."
"In addition to celebrating hard work, it's good to take a break," Shigemoto tacked on in his soft, even tone. He manned the station beside the grill, elegantly plating the food their officer manager cooked. Considering his usual choice of outfit—his favorite pink dress with the white gloves and matching red ribbons—the president gave off an oddly refined air for their midday casual barbeque, putting Sakuragi in mind of the princess-type magical girls still popular in so many current anime.
Yet, disrupting that air, Shigemoto cut a sharp look to Nikoyama. Without even looking up from his laptop, Nikoyama said, "I heard you before! And I can't! No breaks—not yet! I just need to get this idea outlined before I forget it!"
"New incantation circle concept," Midorikawa mouthed to Sakuragi and Koshigaya, who both nodded in understanding. Of course Nikoyama was in the zone and wouldn't pause quite yet.
Koshigaya rubbed her hands together eagerly and hovered by Midorikawa's shoulder. "Sooo, Kaede-chan, whaddaya got?"
He laughed and pointed with tongs. "Mostly chicken-and-veggie skewers, but I nabbed some premium strips of marinated beef, and there's that pork belly you love so much, Koshigaya-san."
Her shrieks were shrill and made Sakuragi wince, but the guys seemed used to it. Shigemoto all but shoved a plate into her arms so the blonde didn't knock Midorikawa over, and Midorikawa added to their newbie, "We've also got salad and lots of fresh fruit, Sakuragi-san, so feel free to dig in." He punctuated things with his trademark smile.
Considering summer was newly upon them, Sakuragi made up her own plate, happily switching from the chicken skewers (yummy! Midorikawa really knew his way around the grill) to salad and eating her weight in watermelon and strawberries (ahhh, naturally sweet and perfect for summer—so delicious!).
The quintet had staked out the middle of the roof, with a few folding chairs and portable tables, spaced out to give Midorikawa room for the small grill. Midorikawa stood and grilled so long as he had ingredients, and the president kept fiddling with prepping plates, mostly for himself and for Nikoyama, who had yet to come up for air.
It was a quiet scene, but Sakuragi found that she didn't mind, though she was glad when Koshigaya pulled her chair close and sat beside her. She stifled a laugh when she saw her senpai's face. "Happy, Koshigaya-san?"
"Mmf?" Koshigaya finished chewing and swallowed with a laugh. "Ahh, sorry. I just love this kind of thing."
"Even though Midorikawa-san usually greets us with snack when we return to the office?"
"Well, he's awesome at that. But this." Koshigaya looked fondly at the scene. "This is really the best way to relax after a hard day."
Hearing those words, Sakuragi thought back on the thirty-seven Kaii this afternoon…and suddenly her muscles seemed to remember flying around, deploying magic circle after magic circle, too. She nodded. "Yeah."
"Too bad we can't do it all the time."
Sakuragi nodded a second time. She noted then that Midorikawa finally set down the tongs and removed his apron, able to enjoy the fruits of his labors himself. "Thank you, by the way, Midorikawa-san, for cooking. You're really great at making sure there's always the right things for everyone," she stated. With a glance, Sakuragi saw Koshigaya had left the pork belly for last and was starting in on it now with a blissful expression.
He smiled, but Koshigaya—tamping down her excitement a bit—trilled and exhaled a happy sigh after a few bites of pork belly. "Ahhh, you really managed to score all my favorites… I love you, Kaede-chan!"
Sakuragi started to chuckle at the older girl's reaction (typical Koshigaya behavior), but Midorikawa's smile caught her eye instead. Whereas a moment before it'd been his usual Midorikawa smile, just now—
—just now, had he reddened and become flustered at Koshigaya's words?
She stared at him intently, but Midorikawa quickly changed his focus to his plate of food and chowing down on cooled skewers. Still, he left her wondering….
The pilot episode of Barley Spice and a dozen AMVs dedicated to her and other beloved magical girl anime of the previous decade later, and they'd managed to have both pulled Nikoyama from his creative solitude and finished all the food.
"Ah!" Nikoyama yipped as he tucked his computer under his arm. "That villain in the pilot episode—that gives me an idea…!" And their coder dashed indoors ahead of them.
Shigemoto heaved a long sigh and settled Koshigaya with a sorry look. "Sorry to tag you in…"
She shook her head and rolled her shoulders. "No problem, Shachou-chan. You need help dragging Niko-chan from his laptop? You can count on me."
"He needs to learn how to take a break…"
They hustled after Nikoyama, so Sakuragi stayed behind to assist Midorikawa with the cleanup. He'd already thought to bring up a few trash bags, and he passed her an empty one so they got to work on opposite sides of their impromptu party and broke things down. They worked in comfortable silence for a few minutes, but eventually she broke it by offering her thanks again. "I don't know if it was your or the president's idea or both, but today was fun. And I got to learn something new about you. Your cooking is really great, Midorikawa-san."
He scratched his cheek bashfully. "Ah, it was just grilling…"
"Not at all! I always thought you had excellent taste in selecting treats for us, just knowing what we like. But making something is another skill altogether."
Midorikawa paused. He mustered half a smile and nodded, slowing as he cleaned and shut the grill. "I appreciate your gratitude, Sakuragi-san. I admire the work you and Koshigaya-san do, you know. …plus, I know my own limits, so I knew I'd need to learn plenty of things to make myself useful and appealing in the real world." He placed his hand atop the grill's hood. "I handle a lot of our communication, but my food can say something else, I guess?" He laughed and scratched his cheek again, but he reddened again, same as earlier.
His words reminded Sakuragi of something she'd read before, though, about food being one of many "love languages." And, if she were right on the mark about what she'd witnessed earlier, then poor Midorikawa might have a long way to go with Koshigaya…
Then again, Koshigaya was her senpai, and her senpai was curiously sharp about certain things.
So Sakuragi, hopefully, imparted some courage as she insisted, "I think your food is yummy and says a lot, especially to Koshigaya-san. So just keep at it, Midorikawa-san." And, taking a page out of his own book, she punctuated it with a beaming smile.
Worse than before, Midorikawa was as red as the watermelon from today's barbeque. But he relented with a tiny smile and nod, and he even accepted Sakuragi's high-five of encouragement before they finished cleaning up the rooftop.
Done for the 5, 10, 20, 50, 70, 100 Fandoms Challenge and for the If You Dare Challenge (for prompt #998: a patient man) in the HPFC forum on FFN. I have been drawn into the awesomeness that is Magilumi and I don't wanna come out. 8D Btwn fic ideas (this is the first of many—so many ships!) and art ideas (A LOT), I just…love this series?? So much?? I CANNOT EVEN. I even made sure to get this category added to FFN just so I could have this posted and properly sorted. XD I love the charries and the found-family trope in it so, so much. As I write, I'm on ch76 rn bc I'm keeping up with the simulpub, and I'm having feels all over the place, so pls feel free to come talk to me on FFN, AO3, tumblr, or pillowfort about the manga, the charries, ships, fic, art, idc. Also I srsly dig Hitokae bc I've noticed a bunch of passing details about them that make them super cute to me and I just. *also a super huge Kaede fangirl* GAH. I LOVE MAGILUMI~ Ah, also a few notes: Still not super sure about the timeline of things, whether Kana's being there a month would deffo coincide with the start of summer so take that with a grain of salt… I will say, Kaede's line about not having a proper welcome party for Kana—there's a panel in ch4 showing the five of them grabbing drinks after she officially signs her Magilumiere contract, so that might've been a tiny celebration…but this is more like a proper, bigger one. -w- Also, worrywart!Kana thinking smthg bad might've transpired before she and Hitomi returned to the office makes sense to me, considering how analytical (and perhaps overanalyzing) Kana is. XD Lastly…regarding a few names, from Koshigaya: I went with the literal "Shachou-chan" and "Kanacchi" as based on the Jpns raws; the latter is truer to her nickname for Kana, but since "shachou" can mean more than simply "president" (plus she routinely refers to him using "-chan"), it feels more natural to me to leave it as "Shachou-chan" when she's speaking to/about him. *end author's commentary*

Number One Fan
Another Hitokae detail only struck me after, like, being 70 chapters in, *lol*.
-----
Fic: "Number One Fan" [FFN] [AO3] [pfio]
Pairings/Characters: pre?Koshigaya Hitomi/Midorikawa Kaede, Akasaka Iroha, Sakuragi Kana, and Makino Akane
Rating: K+
Words: ~1,630
Additional info: friendship, romance, fluff, 3rd person POV
Summary: When the other ladies note Midorikawa's pompoms look a bit worn and offer to replace them, he insists they needn't worry about it. When Koshigaya asks him later why, he confides in her a reason. Or two.
-----
They could pick out the yellow of Midorikawa's bouncing pompoms from a hundred, ninety, sixty (and closing) feet away. It was enough to elicit a snicker from Koshigaya and even a chuckle from their mild-mannered new hire, Akasaka, flying right behind her.

[placeholder: If tumblr walks back their 2024 Midjourney/OpenAI deal, this story will be shared in full on tumblr. amewzing: gf’s hairstyle
[ID: A digital illustration of Akasaka Iroha and Makino Akane in plainclothes against a pink backdrop framed by white lace. Iroha is dressed in a sleeveless, purple-colored, ribbed, turtleneck top and dark green skirt and wears a light blue sweater knotted at her neck. She’s pushing up her glasses with her right hand and has her left arm crossed in front of her chest. Her hair is pulled half back and braided, in the same style as Akane when Akane is transformed; she is smiling at Akane. Beside Iroha, Akane is turned away from Iroha but looking back at her as though doing a double-take, and she is blushing. Akane presses one hand to her chest and clutches two reference books, one red and one green, marked with sticky notes, to her chest. She wears an off-white button-up with her sleeves rolled up to her elbows and dark brown pants. Her hair is in its usual style and her ponytail is slung over her right shoulder; one of her usual dangling orange earrings can be seen on her left ear. Above Akane’s head is a pink heart, like an exclamation, and between her and Iroha is an arrow, indicating her eyes are drawn to Iroha’s hair, as well as the words “AKA x IRO.”/end ID]

A Synchronized Duo
Catch me screaming after the Magilumiere office keeps expanding. 8D *Note: This is set after ch59, after the team returns from the Kyoto battle.
Fic: "A Synchronized Duo" [FFN] [AO3]
Pairings/Characters: pre?Makino Akane/Akasaka Iroha
Rating: K
Words: ~1,340
Additional info: romance, friendship, fluff, 3rd person POV
Summary: As the latest additions to Magilumiere, Makino and Akasaka have their own way of doing things, together. But, after being on her own for a few beats in Kyoto, Makino worries about being part of a duo, for lots of new reasons.
Makino felt a headache coming on and, worse, the moment she thought of the word "headache," the pain pulsing at her temples amplified. She sighed, pressed a finger to her brow, and pushed away from her desk at Magilumiere, making a beeline for the office microwave.
She rifled through the packets of tea in the cupboard and even eyeballed the coffee machine Midorikawa kept pristine off in the corner. Tea or coffee—neither appealed to Makino at the moment, but she found a stray hot chocolate mixed in with the teabags. Huh. Out of season for it, but it wasn't expired…yeah. She could do with some hot cocoa right about now.
Makino filled a mug with water and stuck it in the microwave, but she turned around and stared out at the rest of the office while she waited for the water to heat. Her eyes flicked first to Shigemoto's inner office door, but that was closed, like most days—not odd, especially after his revelation to them in Kyoto. From his door, Makino followed Midorikawa's tall form to where their office manager brought extra cords for their pair of engineers sitting on the small sofas across from each other. Nikoyama thanked him and Yamimori ducked his bleached blond head in gratitude. Sitting at their desks nearby, Koshigaya scolded Yamimori for being bashful, and Sakuragi couldn't help giggling. Even Akasaka, at the next desk over, tried to stifle her own laughter.
This sight—it felt so strange, Makino thought with a frown as she crossed her arms in front of her chest. Yes, they'd secured their new engineer. And, yes, Shigemoto had encouraged them all to take this breather after returning from Kyoto; after all, what should've been a calm company retreat had turned out to be one hell of a dangerous job. They all deserved a few more quiet days…
The microwave beeped at her, so Makino tore her eyes from her friends to grab her mug and dump the mix in. As she stirred, her frown deepened.
      "Something wrong?"
Makino jolted. Thankfully, she had a good grip on the mug, so its contents sloshed but didn't spill when Akasaka spooked her. The redhead glanced at her bespectacled partner to her left. "Ah, Akasaka-san… Did you need something?"
The other woman watched her make her drink. "Not necessarily. But you've been wearing a—let's say, a strong frown, since we returned." She glanced at their friends. "Which seems at odds with everyone else's behavior. Don't you think we have plenty to celebrate, Makino-san?"
This perceptive side of her—it was one way in which they were similar and got along, but Makino now understood that there were definitely times she didn't want to be read like a book… Especially if Akasaka paid enough attention and didn't skip lines or pages, then she'd read it all.
That Makino's head wasn't here but still back in Kyoto.
Back in Kyoto, where everything was still going wrong.
Where Yamimori was working hard but was beside himself, inside that weird barrier at the shrine, with an injured Makino and a collapsed Tonomori and…and a barely conscious Akasaka, as well…
Makino pulled herself from those vivid memories and chewed on her bottom lip, glancing at Akasaka a second time to remind herself that, no, her partner was alive and well and that they had made it out of there. She and Akasaka had gone into that hell together, and they'd come out of it together.
That was another thing they had in common, all these things done together. Trading in their old companies to join Magilumiere at the same time… Makino liked that, despite being the new faces here, Akasaka was a seasoned magical girl same as her. And they always got right down to business out in the field. They'd even worked on that twinning transformation for their Magilumiere forms!
Akasaka cocked her head Makino's way, curious, but Makino offered her half a smile while she tried to focus on the positive things—on things, as Akasaka would point out, she might celebrate. Yeah, she wanted to focus on positive things, to focus on how comfortable her transition from Apda to Magilumiere had been, switching from working on her own to not only having real-time support and a team but a partner who worked so well with her on every job…
…except her thoughts circled back to their last job, in Kyoto, to the challenge of that unknown Kaii, to the sight of Akasaka falling beside her—
Makino couldn't recall the last time her heart had jumped into her throat like that.
Akasaka raised her eyebrows as if in question.
The redhead licked her lips and pursed them, giving Akasaka another glance, longer this time but for good reason. It struck her, too, as strange, that Akasaka seemed completely fine now, even if she hadn't been hit as hard as Tonomori…but if Akasaka and Makino were on the same wavelength, then didn't the Kyoto incident linger with her, too? Or was Makino the odd one out, for being hung up on it?
Akasaka pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose. "Is it your foot?"
Makino blinked, her mug halfway to her mouth. "Eh? My foot?"
"The one you hurt in Kyoto." Akasaka glanced at their feet as they leaned against the counter together. But then her eyes were back on Makino's, blue–black meeting brown. "I know you said you were feeling better, but, if not, tell me, Makino-san."
Ah. So perhaps Kyoto didn't worry her, but Makino's well-being did… Makino's chest ached a bit at the notion, and the ache became a painful throb the longer Akasaka stared, eventually giving Makino a curious little smile. Oh, she was looking for a response. "…no. no, my foot's fine. Are you, um." Might as well go for it: "Are you all right, after Kyoto?"
Akasaka's small smile widened and—was it just Makino, or was it blinding? Ahh, Akasaka seemed so bright to her with that big smile that crinkled her eyes…! "I am," Akasaka replied. "I feel bad that you had to do any fighting on your own, but I know I'm safe with you around. I'm glad we're partners, Makino-san." She nodded when she finished, emphasizing her words.
But those same words were not only reassuring for Makino… She set her mug down and dragged a hand over her face, which felt as warm as her hot cocoa and she would bet money was bright red to boot. Honestly…!
Why on Earth had she wasted time whining about boyfriends-this and boyfriends-that to poor Sakuragi when Makino now had someone like Akasaka Iroha right in front of her?!
"…'Akane,'" she murmured from behind her hand.
      "Hmm?"
Makino summoned her wits and courage and dropped her hand to face Akasaka once more. "It's 'Akane.' I think we've been through enough to be on friendlier terms."
Akasaka blinked, once, then twice—urgh, so cute!—but she smiled again, and her eyes crinkled once more. "I think you're right. Akane-san."
Makino swallowed a lump in her throat. Ahhh, she really made the right decision to join Magilumiere…! And maybe…maybe her lingering worries about Kyoto were silly after all…
But then Akasaka pushed off from the counter, making to return to her desk.
      "Iroha-san," Makino blurted.
"Yes?" Akasaka turned back towards her, her bob slightly swaying around her jawline but always her ears never peeking through.
Makino froze with her attention back on her. "Oh. I, uh. I just wanted to try it out."
Akasaka reached for her nearer hand and gave it a squeeze…even though there was no need, without them transforming. "You'll have all the time in the world for that, Akane-san."
Makino fought back and failed to hide her stupid little smile at that, and she let Akasaka return to her tasks first. After all, Makino had hot chocolate to finish…but she didn't really need it anymore.
Akasaka's promises, better than cocoa, were the perfect remedy to soothe Makino's stress headache.
:3c Well, first thoughts: I think the last time I had to add this many names to Word's dictionary, it was when I started writing for Haikyuu!! XD ANYWAY. I do think my top OTP in Magilumi is Akairo—Akane/Iroha. They just. HOW THEY DEBUTED. WUT. And they've been practically canon research gfs ever since. I cannot. Canon or not, shipping or not, I adore both Akane and Iroha and esp love drawing Akane, *lol* (tho I find her hair challenging—I think Hitomi's the easiest for me to draw??), and I rly do love any and all screen time they get, esp in recent chaps. *as of writing this oneshot, mew is caught up to ch77/reading along with the simulpub & is awash in feels atm, pls handle w/care* So yeah. I have loose plans for another Akairo, plus some art, so pls come chat with me on FFN/AO3/tumblr/pillowfort~ I just knew I had to write a they-use-their-given-names-as-a-sign-of-closeness story after the Kyoto arc… *eyes*
Thanks for reading, and feel free to leave an anon/unsigned review via the FFN link or comment via the AO3 link at the top of the post, especially if you enjoyed this!

amewzing: a summer treat 🍓
[ID: A digital illustration of Sakuragi Kana in a pastel lilac top with puffy sleeves and a square, scalloped neckline. She’s in the shade of a tree on a bright, sunny day and eating a red popsicle painted to look like a strawberry. The popsicle has speckles like strawberry seeds and a green drip-catcher like a strawberry’s cap. Kana’s pigtails are put up into loops so they’re off her neck, and the left side of her fringe is clipped back by a red-and-gold bow barret in the style of the character Barley Spice./end ID]

Do I have several other Magilumi WIPs? You bet. Did I draw this instead bc it's bloody hot and humid rn? You bet. So here's Kanacchi enjoying a cute lil' strawberry popsicle and wearing her trademark pigtails up, enjoying the shade on such a hot summer day~ that's supposed to be a Barley Spice hairclip but i'm assuming colors there orz | Done in Clip Studio Paint.

amewzing: Tsuchiba-san’s transformation
[ID: A digital drawing of Tsuchiba Mei in her new, caped magical girl uniform, on the left, and in her old maid-style uniform, on the right. The new Tsuchiba wears a wry smile while looking on her old self, while her old self stares blankly at her newer self, with an imperceptible frown. Tsuchiba’s black hair and the black parts of her uniforms are shaded in with the same grayed violet the image is drawn in; the background is an off-white with pale rosy dots, framed on the left and right by gradient halftone bars in the same rosy hue. Between the two Tsuchibas is a small round arrow diagram swirling around a mini heart. Above the top arrow, which points towards the old Tsuchiba, it reads “pre-Kana;” below the bottom arrow, which points towards the new Tsuchiba, it reads “post-Kana.”/end ID]

The recent arc in MagiLumi rly has a hold of me... Seeing Tsuchiba—Mei-chan—go from lone wolf to a magical girl of her own design after befriending Kanacchi (and, of course, the Magilumiere gang) just... The FEELS. And I am SO HERE FOR THEM. 💜💜💜 | Done in Clip Studio Paint.

amewzing: We are MagiLumi!
[ID: Digital bust sketches of the characters of Magilumiere Co. Ltd, in assorted colors and washes. In a cool pink is President Shigemoto in his usual hair ribbon and frilly dress; in yellow is Koshigaya-san in her magical girl outfit, as is Kana-chan in a warm pink; in soft brown and hold a pen in one hand and a cellphone in the other is Midorikawa-san; and finally hidden behind his open laptop, as he clicks away, is Niko-chan, but all that can be seen of his face is part of his glasses and his hair. The magical girls and Midorikawa-san are smiling and President Shigemoto wears his usual poker face. /end ID]

It's official: I'm hooked on MagiLumi and I adore everyone in this office family, from the first chap to most recent chaps. Absolutely the best twist on the magical girl genre in forever, and it's a simulpub, folks. Expect more of the growing MagiLumi fam from me bc they're so much fun in spite of the growing Kaii threat...! TTwTT ✨| Done in Clip Studio Paint.
