I recently watched this early film musical Sunny and it's such a fascinating film, not so much for the film itself as for the context around it. It was the second film of Marilyn Miller, at the time arguably the biggest star on Broadway. Sunny was an adaptation of a hit stage musical of the same name. Miller was the star of the original and it was hoped in the talkie-mad world of the late 20s/early 30s, her stardom would translate to film.
Radiating Jazz Age optimism and energy, Miller could act and sing, and her dancing was marvelous, but bad timing killed off her film career. A volley of crappy musicals tired out the public and Sunny played to sparse crowds when released in 1930. Miller made only three films before quitting. Her personal life was also tragic and she ultimately died at age 37.
Such a shame. Sunny is the kind of fluffy farce I rarely go for, but Miller has an appealing presence and undeniable star quality.
Trivia: When Norma Jeane Baker renamed herself Marilyn Monroe, it was after Marilyn Miller. Miller was actually the first person to use that name, combining her birth name (Mary) with her mother's middle name (Lynn).
More trivia: Judy Garland played Miller in Till the Clouds Roll By. Obviously, she and Miller have completely different singing styles, but I loved Garland's cover of "Who?", a song from Sunny that became a popular hit. It's interesting to compare the two clips below-- it goes to show the evolution in musical style between the 1920s and 1940s.
