Yo, have you listened to the latest episode of Recovering Gleek? I know we all like to collectively make fun of Matthew Hodgson for his embarrassing track record. But have we been too harsh on the episode? I always thought it was an unremarkable episode, but it's funner than I remembered. I still wouldn't call it a good episode. I derive pleasure from this episods the same way I derive pleasure from high school student films. They're bad, they're stupid, and I can't get enough of them.
Though the closing number is still utterly terrible. Nothing can redeem it.
Oh I'm afraid I'm quite behind on Recovering Gleek episodes. I still haven't finished The Quarterback and instead started on A Katy or a Gaga but it's going verrry slowly. Also ngl I'm dreading Frenemies a bit lmao but I will probably check out what they have to say about PUC next week.
I figured from the episode description that they might try and say a few nice things about The Puppet Master. To be frank with you, I haven't seen that ep in two years and never paid much attention in the first place as it lacks all aspects that usually draw me to Glee episodes. Plus, in my eyes Hodgson has a lot more to answer for than a cracky puppet episode. The fandom probably is a little too harsh on it? The Fox is obviously, shudders, it broke Kevin McHale for a reason, but from what I remember the episode itself is... fine. Unhinged, sure, but it's the crack season anyway. I guess it's fair to compare it to student films haha. Like the queen herself said: "it's a student film; it's not gonna be good." And that is my approach when I see Matthew Hodgson credited as a writer. It's not gonna be good, but if it's at least funny? Enjoyable rather than blood-boiling? Sure I'll take it.
I'm curious to hear what Ian and Lena have to say about it. I don't know when I'll catch up but eventually, I'm sure.

Prairie Lagoon
White towels formed a line, the silhouette drifted from a sudden fit of wind, around the edges of the city pool, where everyone was damn desperate to cool down in the prairie lagoon. Shaded by the single linden tree outside the chainlink fence, I reached my hands and spread myself out in the sun as neatly and placidly as possible, reaching for nothing in particular; emphasizing what you might…

Mori Book Recommendations, by littlemoriflower
Tumblr media
Hello, dear-friends!
It's been a while since I have done one of these "longer" posts. I have been very absent, not only from this blog, but from the internet at large. School has been killing me lately, and I let the tiredness get the best of me more often than not.
However, I'd like to state that I continue to love AND wear mori everyday. not that anyone was accusing me of not doing it lmao I've simply been lacking the motivation to make more posts, but I hope that that's about to change! I won't be posting every day, but I'll try to come by and be more active in the community where I found so much happiness and lovely people in!
On another note, I have noticed more people joining the community! ^^ That is so exciting!!! I welcome all of you to our humble corner of the internet, and I hope you find peace and happiness in mori kei, as much as we mori folk do! (✿◡‿◡)
Now, to the post!

With the help of the robin, Mary finds the door to a secret garden, neglected and hidden for years. When she decides to restore the garden in secret, the story becomes a charming journey into the places of the heart, where faith restores health, flowers refresh the spirit, and the magic of the garden, coming to life anew, brings health to Colin and happiness to Mary.

Anne Of Green Gables, by L. M. Montgomery
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
This heartwarming story has beckoned generations of readers into the special world of Green Gables, an old-fashioned farm outside a town called Avonlea. Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old orphan, has arrived in this verdant corner of Prince Edward Island only to discover that the Cuthberts—elderly Matthew and his stern sister, Marilla—want to adopt a boy, not a feisty redheaded girl. But before they can send her back, Anne—who simply must have more scope for her imagination and a real home—wins them over completely. A much-loved classic that explores all the vulnerability, expectations, and dreams of a child growing up, Anne of Green Gables is also a wonderful portrait of a time, a place, a family… and, most of all, love.

thinking about The Difference Between Le Vesconte, Hodgson, And Little (but not irving, because i genuinely cannot get a read on his emotional state. or rather i can but there's a lot of other stuff going on for him that kind of overshadows all of this.) because Reasons.
and really i think little is basically massively, almost painfully, hyperempathetic. which is often the crux of the problem because my god everybody around him is miserable and he not only mirrors that back very strongly but he gets really upset himself. and the worst we see it from him is when goodsir ends up having to autopsy irving, which... i am the complete opposite of this. but i still genuinely found that scene hard to watch because matthew mcnulty REALLY does it well.
hodgson i think has a lot of affective empathy but basically no ability to look at another person and go "they are in This Mood." so he spends a lot of time feeling absolutely shitty and completely unspooled but not really knowing why. which often makes him come across as kind of a dick without his meaning to. also he very often ends up just feeling baselessly sniffly and sad without any reason that he can put a name to.
and i will preface what i am saying about le vesconte by saying that this is also my experience with empathy. (i am autistic, as is probably made clear by my ability to do all this and seemingly not get tired of myself. i also have basically none of either of the Empathies)... but he doesn't really have either.
aaaaand in fairness with the expedition if he guesses "sad and damp" he has a fair chance of being right about what somebody else is feeling. but at the same time he's approximately at the level of "looking through a dictionary to discover that the emotion somebody else is feeling is called 'sadness'".
which doesn't mean that he's deliberately going to be a dick and in certain circumstances it's advantageous. he's basically the only person who is holding fitzjames together after sir john dies. since, you know, fitzjames is in no state to function and little is probably not meaning to make it worse but he still isn't helping. (because he's essentially mirroring back "EVERYTHING SUCKS NOW" to fitzjames, which doesn't help.)
and irving... is scared of his own emotions. idk.

hope you don't mind my (way, way too long) input as a Klaine Fan™️ - you don't have to post/answer if it's too much for you, I just wanted to share my thoughts - but I feel like Klaine was one of the few things that Matthew Hodgson didn't completely fuck up. in almost the eps he's written, the Klaine parts have been relatively okay and even good in some cases.
I know Glee, Actually is a dud for the most part but I really enjoyed the Blaine/Burt/Kurt family dynamic in their portion of the episode. it could've been better, since our fandom was expecting the mature conversation about Blaine's cheating that we were promised in 4x08 instead of that being overshadowed by Burt's cancer diagnosis, but I blame that on Ryan Murphy (since he admitted to including Burt's cancer storyline as a way to cope w/ his own father's death from cancer) and not on Matt Hodgson. for what he was given to work with, the man did a pretty decent job with the Klaine storyline in that ep and I was more or less satisfied with it.
I'd say that Transitioning was even better. IMO it was by far Klaine's best episode in season 6, because it completely did away with so much of what bothered me about their storyline in S6 (namely Sue's interference in their relationship + the way that she was used to mock fans) and instead it went back to the roots of why they loved (and liked) each other in the first place. plus it included a bunch of fun callbacks to the episode in which they had their first kiss, which I really appreciated. somehow it even made me feel okay with Blainofsky, and that breakup scene in 6x07 was what cemented to me that Karofsky really had grown and changed into a better person and that there were zero malicious intentions in his relationship with Blaine. I'm honestly impressed that the same clown who wrote IKAG managed to pull off an episode like that.
it's kind of odd that Matt did such a good job with Klaine in his eps while completely fucking over everyone else in the same episode (see Glee Actually and the Bram wedding 🤮 compared to Klaine's sweet family storyline), and even in IKAG Klaine got a whole-ass duet while Brittany stayed mute and wasn't allowed to talk to her girlfriend. he gave Kurt and Blaine the best in his eps and didn't give that care to anyone else on the show. hmmm...y'know what, I've solved the mystery - maybe Matt is the evil Klaine anon 🤪
(but then again, Puppet Master exists, so maybe everything I've just said is completely invalid and Matt Hodgson is just the worst as a whole...two decent Klaine eps are not enough to make up for all the atrocities he's committed 🥴)
This is much appreciated!
Klaine (+ Burt) are the saving grace of Glee, Actually for sure, and I think Transitioning is okay for what it is. Haven't watched it in a long while but like, it was alright, and I agree that the Klaine parts were good, even. I'm not sure if there's a reason he did a surprisingly good job with Klaine - I forgot to make this point earlier, but I genuinely believe he's just a bad writer. That doesn't mean he doesn't have good moments, but by putting together his portfolio we can see that there's a theme of completely butchering, well, theme lol and characters for the sake of stupid punchlines or just some random ass plotpoint. I think he's the type of writer who's annoying because they think they're being sooo clever and funny.
Anyway, so whatever the reason may be, I agree with you and I appreciate this perspective. I think he can tap into some good stuff, like the NY stuff in Glee, Actually, while also getting carried away with his own BS. I think it could be fun - well, cathartic at least to properly go through his stories and examine why exactly he's a flop. Except for IKAG because, ugh, shuddering at the thought. And you know I do feel like disclaiming that this is all just about his work 😂 He's probably a decent dude, whatever, I've just had anons trying to make things personal with him and I don't believe in that. I'll leave the man's character alone but I will maintain that he's a shit writer with occasional good moments, and credit where credit is due his handling of Klaine was okay and even good in places. Maybe that's because he is EKA 😌
But yeah, Flopson is still a flop but he gets a "not as much of a jerk bad writer as he could have been" badge. Nothing will ever fully redeem him but he didn't completely suck in his handling of Glee lol. And hey, an actual Klaine discussion instead of whatever EKA is, yay 😂

THE ACADEMIC TO SUPPORT LOUIS TOMLINSON ON HIS US TOUR
Tumblr media
HOT PRESS
By KATE BRAYDEN | 25 Apr 2023
The Academic have just been announced as support for Louis Tomlinson for his upcoming North America tour in May and June.
The Westmeath indie-pop rockers will support the former One Direction singer on dates across the US and Canada this summer, following on from their own headline North American tour.
"We’re buzzing to be joining @louist91 for some shows on the Faith In The Future world tour!" The Academic posted to their Instagram today. "We already know that Louis has the most incredible fans and we can’t wait to play for you guys! Let us know which show you are coming too. We will try and meet as many of you as we can!"
instagram
It's already been a huge year for Craig Fitzgerald, Stephen Murtagh, Matthew Murtagh and Dean Gavin. The Academic scored their second Number 1 on the Official Irish Albums Chart with their sophomore record Sitting Pretty.
The follow up to 2018 album Tales From The Backseat – their first chart topper – saw off stiff competition from both Paramore and Taylor Swift to take the coveted top spot. Tour dates across Ireland, the UK and Europe followed before the band headed Stateside.
In a special Hot Press cover story interview with Pat Carty, bassist Stephen Murtagh explained: “The first album feels like such a summery record, a young debut album. I don’t think this album feels that way. It feels like a natural progression without losing sight of what makes us… us.”
The album was produced by Nick Hodgson, formerly of Kaiser Chiefs, at Snap Studios in London.
“We listened to a lot of mixes like R.E.M. and Arcade Fire," bassist Stephen Murtagh remarked. "A lot of indie music is very kick drum with the vocal shouting at you down the middle whereas we wanted it a bit more spacey.”
“The first album, feels like such a summery record, a young debut album," Stephen resumed. "I don’t think this album feels that way. It feels like a natural progression without losing sight of what makes us… us.”
Earlier this month, The Academic performed for 20,000 people during US President Joe Biden's trip to his ancestral home in Ballina, Co. Mayo during his Irish visit. The band also performed at the Hot Press-curated Windmill Live show at the end of March.
Tomlinson will perform in Dublin on November 8th this year, at the 3Arena as part of his UK and European tour.
