Philippine Heritage Society Ball and 2022 Filipino Heritage Awards a testament to the beauty and richness of our Filipino Heritage
Proud to be Filipino!
Tumblr media
What a night of celebrating Filipino music, Filipino Heritage and all things Filipino!  All roads led to the Fiesta Pavilion of the historic Manila Hotel last July 25 for the Philippine Heritage Society Ball and 2022 Filipino Heritage Awards.  Guests arrived at the reception area dressed to the nines in formal Filipiniana and to partake of the unlimited coffee by Curve Coffee Collaborators and cocktails by Destileria Limtuaco.  Special exhibitors lined up the reception area of the hall including media partners Globaltronics/PARC Foundation and Light TV; presenter Greenfield Development Corporation, MX3, Apo View Hotel, Organique,  ….,.The whole area, including the ballroom, was tastefully styled by Carmen Afzelius of Floral Fairy, who used bamboo, anahaw, succulents, sampaguita, capiz shells and other accents to give the entire event an elegant and festive atmosphere.
The red-carpet pre-event was hosted by the fabulous Raymond Villanueva, who interviewed the attendees and guests about their advocacies, views on heritage, and whose creations they were wearing.  Photographers and media personnel snapped away as each guest was being interviewed.
By 7pm, the guests were ushered into the grand ballroom for the main event.  The show was divided into three main portions:  the Heritage Waltz, the Awards ceremony, and the fashion walk titled Harana sa Rampa.
Tumblr media
As the lights dimmed and the announcer called the name of each participant, Philippine Heritage Society members and their partners made their way to the dance floor to dance to “Tanda de Valse”, composed by Jose “Pitong” Ledesma and choreographed by Dalah Pia. The men wore barong tagalog made from local materials like pina while the women wore beautiful designed baro’t saya which swayed gently as the dancers went through their routine. They finished their dance to resounding applause by the appreciative audience.
The awards ceremony was both grand and solemn.  As each awardee walked slowly up the stage to receive their award, the audience was silent in reverence while the announcer listed each awardee’s accomplishments. The awardees present included the owners of Sarao Motors (Awardee for Design), the owners of Aristocrat (Awardee for Service), Lisa Macuja-Elizalde (Awardee for Dance), Attorney Dominador Buhain (Awardee for Publishing), and National Artist Fides Cuyugan Asensio (Awardee for Music).
Dinner was a delight for the senses as Manila Hotel chefs outdid themselves with a tasteful menu of Filipino classics.  Performances by LyrOPERA artists: Randy Gilongo, Calie Ng, Nina Campos (who also emceed), Bernadette Mamauag, Sherine Ann Koa, Eden Dumlao, and the Philippine Tenors, serenaded the guests throughout the evening.
Tumblr media
The fashion walk “Harana sa Rampa” was definitely one of the most anticipated portions of the entire evening.  Exquisite Filipiniana fashions designed by some of the country’s top designers (Oskar Peralta, Edgar Madamba, Edgar San Diego, Ditta Sandico, Peri Diaz, Frankie de Leon, Petra Lim, Ronaldo Arnaldo, Ole Morabe and Lito Perez) were worn by luminaries and fashion icons including Ambassador Vic and Connie Garcia, David and Mache Ackerman, Jennifer Angeles, Malou Brewer, Danda Buhain, Aileen Campos, Tess Castro, Maggie Chavez, Ruby Chua, Joel Cruz and kids, Adrea Endicio, Aileen Garalde, Loubelle Gardiola, Rina Garcia, Genieve Jamisola, Rose Ranola Jordan, Rose Santiago Licup, Cora Lozada, Jessie Maloles, Ann Marie Morales, Mhel Pechera, Genevieve Qui, Minerva Racuya, Charito San Pedro, Michelle Media Sison, Lina Castillo Sullivan, Coco and Chanel Sun, Nikki Tang, Elaine Timbol, Dr. Mary Jane Torres, Flora Urquico, Sophia Yara and Mayor Krisel Lagman.  The models succeeded in showing their clothes elegantly and in the best light while they were being serenaded to kundiman classics like Mutya ng Pasig, Ang Maya, Maalaala mo kaya, etc. performed by LyrOPERA singers.
The evening ended with a grand toast wishing everyone a bright future led by PHS founder Sherwin Sozon with fellow founders Tess Castro, Nathan de Leon and PHS Committee Chairperson Mache Torres Ackerman.
Overall the Philippine Heritage Society Ball and 2022 Filipino Heritage Awards were a testament to the beauty and richness of our Filipino Heritage.  Mabuhay!

Thappad Review
Tumblr media
March 4, 2020
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
Relationships survive on compromise. Both partners must agree to make some changes in their lifestyle to adapt to one another’s needs. But, this cannot happen at a loss of respect. In Thappad, Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) is a housewife by choice, not by pressure. She derives immense satisfaction from her daily routine and never imagines a life separate from that. However, everything changes after her husband slaps her during a violent fight with his boss. She begins to view their relationship, his behavior, and everyone else’s reactions in a different light, and thus begins a complex analysis of a modern day Indian marriage.
Thappad is, on the surface, a story revolving around domestic violence. The film deals with the build up to and aftermath of a husband slapping his wife for the first time during a house party. But the film is not a one toned analysis of women’s rights and feminism. It is a take on the entitlement and subtle patriarchal sentiments that dominate the culture in India. It is about male privilege and how it has seeped into the lives of even those men who believe that they are being liberal. From a patriarchal perspective, the slap is a supposedly trivial incident that disrupted the lives of these regular people living regular lives. But the film shatters that perspective by fleshing out the underlying patriarchy. The audience realizes that the slap isn’t the cause of differences between the husband and wife. It’s just a trigger that allows this woman to see all the casual sexism that she had been ignoring. And the aftermath of the incident is all about moving ahead rather than forgiveness and emotions. Everyone around Amrita is adamant that she let go and move on. Nobody tries to understand what her feelings are or attempts to point out her husband, Vikram’s, fault. On the other hand, Vikram takes her for granted and regards his rant to suffice as an apology. The problem lies in the mindset of people, not in the act of slapping.
Writer Mrunmayee Lagoo and Writer-Director Anubhav Sinha take a simple concept and weave it into an intricate drama. They create a multitude of characters of different mindsets, different lifestyles, and different classes, who are all somewhat connected to and affected by this incident. From a neighbor who is a single mother, to a maid who is constantly suffering domestic violence, to a lawyer unhappy in her marriage, to a mother who has compromised in her relationship and is unsure of her daughter’s decision to not compromise, each character is beautifully sketched out and delivers a different perspective to the incident. Apart from these characters, there are so many more that shape this narrative, and the decisions that the lead character takes.
The film boasts of an excellent star cast. Seen in a completely different avatar from her previous roles, Taapsee Pannu shines as the simple and docile housewife, trying to regain her respect after a trauma-inducing incident. Amrita is not rebellious. But she is also not one to lie low when someone tarnishes her respect. This role requires someone who can speak without words. For most of the film, Amrita is mostly silent, internalizing what is happening around her. But in that silence, her face reveals her thoughts. During the interactions between the husband and wife, as he attempts to reconcile with her, the hypocrisy in his words are reflected in her expressions. Pavail Gulati is also brilliant, as the husband troubled by his own problems, yet inconsiderate of his wife’s emotions. Apart from these two, the remainder of the cast is equally as fantastic. Ratna Pathak Shah, Dia Mirza, Kumud Mishra, Naila Grewal, Tanvi Azmi, Maya Sarao, Geetika Vidya, Manav Kaul, Siddhant Karnick, and everyone else fit their diverse roles perfectly. Each character represents a different aspect of society. Each one of us is in one of those characters so it is very important for them to be portrayed accurately.
Thappad is not just an important film, it is also an extremely well made one. Other than one or two characters that have flawed storylines, and a bit of underlining at the end that goes overboard in proving the point, the film is almost perfect, with an immaculate attention to detail. From the well-crafted dialogues, to the realistic characters, everything in this film is meant to serve a purpose. This film deserves to be watched by all men and women, who are consciously or unconsciously supporting patriarchal ideals on a daily basis. It may not be everyone’s story, but it is one that affects everyone. Thus, if not for its artistic merit, watch it for its message, which will make everyone question his/her own ideals and behavior.

Thappad begins with the routine family life of Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) a happily married housewife and her husband, Vikran (Pavail Gulati).  Vikram works in a reputed company and is aggressively focused on climbing the corporate ladder that will ultimately take him to London, as the head honcho. This series looks very promising mainly because-
1. The STORY
-The story is based on the world of Crimes and Drugs.
Such stories majorly have male protagonist doing all the actions and gali galoch but here,we have a female protagonist.
This will be a nice change to look at this world from a female perspective and her struggle and wins!
2. The CAST
Sushmita Sen - the 90's kids DreamGirl😍😍😍She is gracing the screen after ages and she looks amazing as ever.In the first half she looks her graceful, sultry, jovial and in the next half she is all "No-nonsense Boss Bitch I will murder you if you even look at my kids".
I am waiting for this AARYA!😈😈
Vikas Kumar- You might know him as Damodar Deshmukh from y-films series Khotey Sikkey. He did an amazing job as a Senior Inspector who solves High profile cases with 5 youngsters & here we have him as the ACP from Narcotics.
Manish Chaudhary- Even though we know scene him in many films & series, the one which takes the cake is POWDER where he played the Narcotics Bureau's Superintendent & here we have him as the Drugload.. co-incidence? I don't think so!
Chandrachur Singh- A good actor who suddenly disappeared from the face of the Earth.Last I remember seeing him in a good project, was in JOSH movie.
P.S.is it jus me or does he looks like Shashi Tharoor, in here??😂
Maya Sarao- She played Tapsee's lawyer, Netra, in movie Thappad.I liked her in the movie, now let's see what she is doing in here.

Thappad Movie Review : An impactful social drama that questions the unsaid rules of marriage
Critic's Rating: 4.5/5 Thappad Story: Amrita's (Taapsee Pannu) world comes crumbling down when her fiercely ambitious husband, Vikram (Pavail Gulati), lands a mighty slap across her face at a party that was supposed to celebrate his success in the corporate world. Will Amrita, whose life so far has revolved around Vikram's needs, wants and dreams, stand up and speak up against this humiliation in public? Or will she brush it off as a one-off incident, forgive him and move on? Or will this shake up her own beliefs about life and marriage?
Thappad Review: Hailing from a loving and supportive family in Delhi, and trained in Indian classical dance, Amrita's life could have taken a different course but she harboured the dream of being the best housewife ever, even if that meant giving up on her passion for dance. Vikram is a go-getter, and has his mind and heart set on his goals and he will do everything in his capacity to achieve it. But, in a moment, he realises that his big dreams are about to get shattered, blame it on office politics. Vikram does the unthinkable — his pent-up frustration finds an outlet in his committed wife, in the form of a thunderous slap that's witnessed by loved ones from both sides. And, this sparks the beginning of an ugly, emotional battle which goes beyond domestic violence. While the uncalled for incident makes Amrita delve upon and question her life choices and their marriage, Vikram continues to live in denial and wonders how 'just one slap' is turning out to be a life-changing moment.
Anubhav Sinha's 2 hours and 21 minutes-long social drama, which is made for a society that rarely talks about the emotional and psychological effects of domestic violence, is set to spark debates and discussions on various ground. One stress-fuelled slap at a party takes the form of a full-blown conversation pertaining to the unsaid rules of marriage (where women are constantly reminded ki ghar zyada zaruri hain and that their actions will always be determined by log kya kehenge) and if it is acceptable for a husband to get away with what he considers one 'casual thappad' because he was fuming with watch movies online.
Tumblr media
The film takes its own sweet time in expressing the dynamics of Amrita-Vikram's arranged marriage and how the two of them manage to blend in well with each other's financially-imbalanced, yet likeable, families. Sure, Vikram loves his wife, but he has made a monster out of his career goals, which the better half supports and harbours with all her heart. Even before the conflict arises, you can see an uber happy Taapsee making plans of a 'big blue door' at their future London apartment. Naturally, when the slap happens, her world turns over and even both sides of the family are divided on what is right, what is wrong and how much is too much, and the protocols of marriage in our Indian setting. Irrespective of various views thrown at her, Amrita is fiesty and resolves to channel the inner fighter in her and stands up for what she truly believes in — that even one slap is outrageous and not okay.
'Thappad' is not just a film aimlessly ranting about borderline domestic violence; it brings to light the years of conditioning that a woman is subjected to by her own family and the society that she lives in. Other than the aforementioned couple, there are other women in focus, too — one who is bearing the brunt of a family's name and legacy, one hung up on the idea that marriage is the ultimate destination, one coming from the poorer section of the society who is compelled to believe that getting thrashed by the husband is the norm, and one who has loved and lost a fine husband and is now struggling to find a replacement who outdoes the former. Sinha manages to intertwine all these stories and juxtaposition them with one another at right junctions, without being too in-your-face about it. The subtly works beautifully, as the stark contrast in their lives unfold.
Taapsee, as the submissive wife, who suddenly undergoes an ocean of change within her, is a firecracker of a performer in this drama. In one scene, where she bids goodbye to a crucial character, Taapsee delivers a speech that is cathartic to its very core. Her portrayal is restrained but at the same time, in every scene she exposes a gamut of emotions — pain, disgust, regret and rage — without saying too much. If that is not a stupendous performance, we don't know what is. Pavail Gulati, as the determined corporate-slave with very intense life goals, pulls off a brilliant performance. You will want to hate him for his flaws, but his character is no less complex than the rest of them. Kumud Mishra stands out as Amrita's father — an ardent supporter of his daughter — and at most times, he is the only one who sticks up for her. Mishra's character reinstates why for a lot of daughters their father is their hero. Tanvi Azmi and Ratna Pathak Shah, as Amrita's mother-in-law and mother respectively, play their roles to a T — that of being the torchbearers of matriarchal mentality and trying to instill the same in the women of the house. However, Maya Sarao, who plays the high-profile lawyer Nethra Jaisingh, is the weakest link in the film. Not that she is bad, but others are so good that she gets overshadowed by some real power-packed performances.
The music of the film (by Anurag Saikia) is beautifully melancholic in tone and blends in with the narrative. It is safe to say that Anubhav Sinha has rendered his career best in this strong-worded social drama. He deserves an applause for the depth-handling of the various characters in the film, their greys, complexities, dilemmas without ever getting too loud, overbearing or trying too hard to make a statement. Yet, the film drives home a solid point and leaves you with enough to ponder upon. The fine and nuanced writing, by Sinha and Mrunmayee Lagoo, deserves a special mention as that is what takes the film notches higher. To sum it up, 'Thappad' is a silent slap on our society's age-old belief — shaadi mein sab kuch chalta hain. But, honestly, should it be that way? And that is what we need to start talking about... now! In-depth Analysis Our overall critic’s rating is not an average of the sub scores below.
Direction: 4.5/5Dialogues: 3.5/5Screenplay: 4.0/5Music: 3.5/5Visual appeal: 3.5/5
