I just saw Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure in the theater, at the mall where that mall scene takes place.
Tumblr media
It's called Metrocenter Mall and it's closed now. It's been dead for a loooong time, but only a few years ago was finally shuttered and scheduled for (at least partial) demolition.
I grew up not that far from Metro, and I remember when it looked like it did in Bill and Ted's. I've also been to the Circle K (also now closed) and I know the school (still open last I checked) and water park (closed).
I've always loved time travel movies, and Bill & Ted's has a special place in my heart. It was really fun to see it in the theater one last time.

This week’s #TBT takes us back to Los Arcos Mall. 🛍
Los Arcos was located at the Southeast corner of Scottsdale and McDowell roads from 1969 – 1999.
For roughly the first decade of its existence, the mall was the largest and most modern indoor shopping center in the Valley. It was built on an almost 42-acre property with 607,350 square feet of retail space.
This cross-shaped shopping center included 75 stores, anchored by Broadway Southwest (aka The Broadway) on the east end, Sears on the south end, an entrance and food court on the north end and a theater and entrance on the south end.
It was named Los Arcos (“the arches”) for its Spanish architectural influence and southwest interior design, which included a variety of arched entryways, a Spanish-colonial red tile roof, stucco walls, an indoor gazebo made in Mexico City and murals throughout the building.
Los Arcos was the first enclosed, indoor mall designed by Westcor, a major developer of Arizona shopping centers, founded just five years before the opening of Los Arcos.
At the time, Scottsdale Fashion Square, which opened in 1961, was still an open-air mall located just 3.5 miles north of Los Arcos.
Westcor went on to develop shopping centers all over the Valley, including Metrocenter Mall (1973), Paradise Valley Mall (1979), Superstition Springs (1990), Kierland Commons (2000), Chandler Fashion Center (2001) and San Tan Village (2007).
When Mesa’s Fiesta Mall opened in 1979, it began to draw East Valley shoppers away from Los Arcos. Along with new ownership in 1988, a major renovation of the mall expanded the food court and updated the interior décor.
However, with the expansion of Fashion Square during the same era, many retailers chose to open locations there instead of Los Arcos, leading to a decline in its popularity among shoppers.
In 1994, the city opened a Citizen Service Center inside Los Arcos, where residents could pay utility bills, return library books and have their questions about city services answered by representatives of various city departments.
The following year, the Broadway store closed and the owner of the mall put the property up for sale. It sold for $14 million.
In the late-90s and early-2000s, the site was slated to become a $140 million Arizona Coyotes NHL arena. The plans created a great deal of debate Valley-wide and encountered a number of hurdles from the start.
By 1999, Los Arcos had fallen into a state of noticeable deterioration and the remaining stores vacated the property. Demolition of the mall began in May 2000.
The arena plans fell through in 2001 and three years later the property owner, the city and the Arizona State University Foundation came to an agreement for the sale of the property, which would go on to become SkySong, The ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center.
Today, Skysong is one of the most dynamic centers for innovation, technology and economic expansion in the western United States, but for many Scottsdale residents the site still brings back memories of browsing the CDs at Sam Goody and meeting up with friends in the food court for some Taquitos Real. 😌

"Downward Spirals" Good bye Metro Center. On 6/30/2020 I walked in my old footsteps as a youth & I revisited memories that have eluded me for so long. I had some really great times here. It's strange to be back, on your last day open as we know it. I see the desolate & sad shape your in now & it breaks my heart. I am sorry I didn't do my part to keep you open. I fell into the trap of feeding those monstrous smiling boxes that come right to my door. I am afraid that the next generation will not know what it's like to visit a mall & get to have the same experiences that I had. As a kid, I always looked forward to going to the mall, the smell, the goodies, the arcade & most importantly, the freedom. That was the 1 place that felt safe, like it was a familiar friend. I am sad to see you go. I hope this fate dosen't meet any other of my old friends. You got Metro Center stories? Bogus
I had heard that this would happen, but today Metrocenter Mall in Phoenix, AZ closed. Pretty sad, but it’s happening to malls everywhere because malls just don’t work anymore. Not even in fucking Phoenix.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t make me any less sad. I have so many memories there. But the tragic thing is that Metrocenter was the mall featured in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I ate pizza at that fucking Pizza D’Amore dude.
Tumblr media
And it used to be a beautiful place. We had the ice rink, but then after they closed that, there was a god damn mini amusement park with a fucking science museum downstairs. It was THE SHIT dude.
But then they took that out, and it all went downhill from there. It lost the charm it had in the 70′s and 80′s. Putting Walmart in was the kiss of death. Now it’s gone. I found a blog entry with some history and some awesome photos here.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to mourn a soulless building for a couple of hours.

remember that 1989 poto movie ‘phantom of the mall: eric’s revenge’?
it would be perfect for a current day adaptation! :D
it’s early 2019. pv mall is still bustling, albeit much less than in the years prior. sears has just closed down, liquidating everything and shuttering the store. but rumor has it that something is still inside...
or someone. people say that a rarely seen employee named eric is living within the empty store. it’s the only place where he can be free despite his deformed face. as the year goes on, people claim they see a shadow lurking through the darkness. why was the sears signage never removed until the day it was torn down? because eric wouldn’t allow anyone to tamper with his store
eventually, pv becomes his mall. stores close down not only because of the changing world, but because of the strange happenings going on within the mall. when the pandemic temporarily closes pv, eric is free to roam around and do whatever he pleases
but someone is with him...
during one of his travels to the food court, he comes across a young woman- only known as chris- gazing at the coca-cola carousel. her father has recently died of covid and the carousel, where her most cherished memories with him are, is all she has left. eric talks to chris, claiming he’s a spirit of the stars. there are little lights on the dark blue food court ceiling, so chris readily believes him
chris continues to sneak into the mall, exploring it with her spirit. she also enjoys the freedom of the empty mall. it gives her a chance to fly away from all her sorrows
then pv reopens for the holiday season. chris can no longer roam, but she visits eric by the long abandoned sears
then...
tragedy strikes.
in march of 2021, the mall is permanently shut down. eric and chris continue to see each other, now meeting inside sears. but before eric can reveal himself as more than a shadow, even more tragedy strikes
the mall will be torn down! chris and eric were hoping pv would languish for years like fiesta mall or metrocenter, but alas! ‘tis not to be.
in july, chris is horrified to see the old sears come crashing down. she fears that eric is lost forever!
the damage done to pv mall is irreversible. so is chris’ spirit, which is broken at the loss of yet another close person
but from the dust of a mall long gone comes...
phantom of the (pv) mall: revenge never dies! >:)
