Today will be the first day in me getting my life back together. For nearly 6 years, I was on antidepressants due to difficulty with transitioning from active duty to the civilian sector. I joined the National Guard in hopes of a better opportunity, and getting something better than the leadership I was dealt by others. I had a lot of personal demons and never found full satisfaction in life. Eventually, after a attempt on my own life, I was voluntarily sent to a psychiatric facility. There, I got my first prescription antidepressant that actually seem to make a difference. A while the effects were generally positive at first, the reality eventually took hold. Eventually things got worse, due to my own poor choices and inability to go forward.
I was prescribed an antipsychotic, that basically made me emotionally numb and gain roughly 20 pounds over a couple of years. Eventually, I was medically retired from military service. Which gave me much needed money, due to my depression basically ruining my opportunities for a job or motivation to find one. I eventually got my first full-time job that assisted me greatly, but I hated the customers and the lack of enthusiasm from leadership above.
One day, I was sent back to the storage unit that only employees go into. After a half hour discussion, I was terminated from my position due to violating company policy over questionable circumstances given by them. I lost all of my money, basically being unemployed. Eventually I found a new job in a different field all together, and I seem to be arguably very efficient at my job as told to me by my coworkers and fellow supervisors. I went back to school during this time, while the first instance didn't work out so well. The second one pretty much made me come to the realization with a lot of things.
Eventually I took a break, and went overseas to meet a special someone. It really gave me motivation but then, things didn't go as planned with school. Eventually I was dismissed from that program, and then joined a new program all together where I was on my way to become valedictorian of my class in some way. During February of 2023, I got the approval from my psychiatrist to get off the antidepressants all together, over the span of a year or so finally trying to get off of this stuff.
I felt very proud of myself, and I definitely felt the weight come off of me literally. As I lost nearly 5 lb in 2 weeks after getting off that stuff. While completing the second semester of my program, I got a phone call from a potential employer which I took immediately. As I was fed up with the uncertainty of the my current employer, and leadership basically ignoring me altogether. The school that I finished my second semester with left an open door for me, as they were on good terms with me overall and I never started anything like some other students. Then I started my current position at this agency.
It is arguably the most fulfilled I have ever felt at any job, but the training took a while to get to as it is standard with this position. I definitely see my ups and downs, but I definitely feel satisfied overall. I decided to get myself better altogether despite some of the gripes I feel from employment. I want to improve myself, and get back to a weight that I am satisfied with. Along with brushing off my native tongue, and learning the language of my eventual spouse.
I did not do much anything on New Year's Eve or today at all. But, I definitely feel a lot more prepared for the world, and its challenges. I and definitely going to take myself in the right direction, and use all the knowledge and experience I have acquired in life for the betterment of myself and those I care about.

US Department of Labor announces $1.2M investment to improve delivery of services to veterans, transitioning service members, military spouses On October 14th US DoL announced that its Veterans’ Employment and Training Service has awarded a $1.2 million technical service contract aimed to improve the customer experience for veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses using the agency’s resources. In 2021, more than 2,800 staff funded by VETS served more than 370,000 veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses worldwide. Approximately 45,000 of these people were using services supported by the Jobs for Veterans State Grant program at American Job Centers. VETS’ award to Technical Assent LLC – a service-disabled veteran-owned small business – will fund a multi-year effort to enhance user experiences with the tools and resources VETS provides. The effort aligns with the Executive Order on Transforming Federal Customer Experience guidance. In its initial phase, VETS and Technical Assent will work together to gain a deeper understanding of veterans’ experiences with service delivery at more than 2,300 American Job Centers nationwide and made available through the Jobs for Veterans State Grant program. OBLD 633-Week 1
When I began this MS-Leadership program at ERAU, I was unsure of what to expect or how it would change my way of thinking. At the time prior to my first course, I came from a long career in the police world where toxic leaders run amuck. My idea of leadership and leaders was not a positive one. At one time, I was labeled a “boss fighter”, which is a northeast police slang term for a borderline insubordinate cop. This program has changed my entire perspective on leaders. While I still believe that law enforcement are the most toxic leaders around, I have a greater understanding of their decisions and why those decisions were most likely made. I also have changed the type of leader I wish to emulate. While I still deeply respect BGen Robin Olds, USAF, and his very hands-on style of servant leadership, I also find value in behind-the-scenes styled leaders such as the CIA Director of Counter Terrorism J. Cofer Black.
Black is a highly respected, yet reserved leader who was the bedrock for a winning strategy for waging war against terrorists responsible for the attacks on 9/11/2001. The changing trend I have noticed in myself compared to my parents when it comes to attitude towards leaders is in line with generational changes. My parents are of the baby boomer generation and believe in working long hours, company loyalty, and being happy to be gainfully employed. Not really causing “waves”. My generation of the millennials or “Xennials” as I am born in 1982, so I demonstrate characteristics from both Gen X and millennials tend to see leaders very differently and treat our employment differently. We do not live to work but work to live. A work-life balance is paramount to us. We feel comfortable challenging norms, and decisions made by management if we have a more efficient solution that is viable.
Just this past week, I rejected a job offer, as it paid me $20K more annually, but would require me to work an hour away from my residence and odd hours. I wasn’t willing to give up the freedom I currently have in my current job, as I create my own schedule and can adjust it as needed. That is priceless to me as I have young children who participate in activities such as travel lacrosse and a spouse that also travels for work on occasion and isn’t as flexible as me with her schedule. That would be unheard of for my parents in so many ways. From accepting less money, to being the male in a marriage that is the caretaker and not the breadwinner of the home and being a leader in a different type of role. I observe the ongoing “great resignation”, or “great reshuffle” and I must congratulate Generation Z for spearheading their valiant effort on not wavering their standard of work and salary expectations. They have set the new standard for remote work options, salary and work benefit packages, and work-life balance.
For the first time in modern history, the employee wields significant bargaining power and can demand these concessions prior to accepting or negotiating their job offer. Even with all the information of leadership and its practices located in the palm of one’s hand, there is still a certain level of disconnect. There is still a quality control issue in the production of leaders. I do not see a tangible solution to this problem, as leaders are made and not born, contrary to many peoples’ beliefs.
I look back at my days at my undergraduate education at Norwich University-Military College of Vermont. It is marketed as a “leadership laboratory” as the Corps of Cadets allows you the student to take several leadership roles over the years, and hone other roles within your ROTC commands, but looking back, how are we really learning leadership, when the people we are learning from have only really used their leadership skills in theory and not in the field? They are not commissioned officers yet, and very few of them were enlisted soldiers or “Mustangs” as in enlisted to officer roles. Our instructors were Senior NCOs and Senior officers, many with combat experience; but they can only show us so much, as it was up to us to carry out the decision-making process. It still has perplexed me to this day.

Jack of All Trades, Master of None: Moving Your Degree With You
There was a time in my life when I was pursuing the path to becoming a licensed counselor I had grand plans of one day owning my own practice. That’s when I ran into the same problem that many of us run into as military spouses. Licensing and certification issues.
Instead of making the decision to pursue my PhD in counseling, I decided to forgo all the trouble of getting re-certified and relicensed every time I had to move. I chose to wait until my service member retires and we find our “forever home.” But what on Earth could I do with a B.S. in Social Psychology? As it turns out, I could do a LOT.
When it comes to education and employment, military spouses have to approach our careers just like everything else: creatively, resourcefully and totally out of the box. Social Psychology is all about understanding human behavior in social situations … i.e. PEOPLE. Since most jobs involve people, all I had to do was get creative with my skillset to find meaningful employment as my hubby took me along on this adventure. I’ve since used my skills in training and development and now as a full time writer!
But what about those other specific degrees? If you find yourself in an employment pickle or can’t match your degree to available career opportunities in your area, check the list below for some ideas!
Law
If you’ve obtained your Juris Doctorate to practice law, chances are you’re already aware of the red-tape nightmare of the licensing issues. There are many military spouses who have found success despite these issues and have even gone on to work towards easing them across state lines. MSJDN is an organizations of military spouse lawyers who have done just that! But there are always alternatives if you’re forced into situations where you can’t use your education to the fullest extent.
When a friend of mine PCS’d to California a few years back, she was able to use her JD as an immigration attorney. She wasn’t required to take the bar exam in that state to work in that field, and since she was passionate about immigration anyway, she dove in head first! She worked first with a nonprofit and was then recruited by a firm after she won an award from the California Bar Association for her work with detained immigrants.
Psychology
Psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. There are a slew of fields you could work in while you pursue higher education or go through the licensing process. Media and advertising would be a great field to consider since psych grads have valuable insight into how people think and can analyze complex problems while communicating them with ease. Media roles like management, writing or production could lead to other opportunities and a diverse resume.
Human resources is also an option and can be used in the public and the private sectors. Areas such as professional development, coaching, recruitment and public relations all fit the bill under the umbrella of a psychology degree.
The Liberal Arts Degree
Whether it’s music, fashion, film or any of the other humanities, you might be thinking to yourself, “What the heck can I do with a Fashion Degree in the middle of nowhere?” Well, since most of the arts and humanities deal with the creative side of our world, then maybe you need to use it and get creative with it! Liberal arts are versatile but you may need to pick up a technical skill to help solidify your resume.
Take a marketing class or a course that can teach you the basics of coding and you could nail a job as a graphic designer or work for an advertising agency. Hit up a nonprofit and see if they would let you volunteer your new skills to help beef up that experience and you could really have something to tide you over until you begin your film career as the next James Cameron.
There are so many ways you can use your degree if you just think outside of that box. If you truly want to use that amazing degree you worked so hard for, you may not always be doing what you initially set out to do. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be successful! The path to success looks different for everyone, but here are a few more tips to make sure your big, beautiful brain gets its due:
Know what you DON’T want to do. If you have a degree in in the social sciences but can’t stand the thought of data entry or probability and statistics (yuck!), make sure that your job search doesn’t include those tasks.
Concentrate on the “roles and responsibilities” section of the position description instead of the “required qualifications.” If your education gives you the skills to perform the required tasks, then be creative in your cover letter by leveraging those transferrable skills.
Ask to shadow someone who is doing a job you might be interested in. There’s a lot to be said about a potential hire who wants to get a feel for a certain position. On one hand, you’ll be able to see if the position is something you could be successful at. On the other hand, it shows great initiative on your part for the hiring manager. At the very least you’ll be able to network with others in the area and in that line of work.

The challenges—and triumphs—of a military spouse
Most people are quick to thank a soldier or veteran for their service and their sacrifice. But many don’t realize how deep and long lasting that sacrifice actually is. Nilsa Sanchez can tell you firsthand. Faced with obstacles After deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Nilsa’s husband had been medically retired from military service. She was now caregiver to him as well as her two young children. With money tight and little prospect of obtaining employment that could realistically support her family, Nilsa knew she needed an education that would prepare her for a career. “My husband and I want to set an example for our children and to create the opportunity for a better life for them,” she said. “And hopefully, it will inspire them to set an example moving forward.” Dealing with the realities of military life “People don’t realize how difficult it is for military families,” Nilsa pointed out. “When your spouse is an infantry soldier who’s deployed for long periods of time, you’re the full-time parent and you’re responsible for paying the bills—on a very limited budget. Attending classes isn’t practical and military bases are not usually convenient to college campuses.” She saw a sign of hope While in New York City, Nilsa saw a sign for Berkeley College. She went in and explained her situation to an Admissions representative. “I knew I needed to get an education,” said Nilsa. “But it had to be both convenient and affordable. Fortunately, Berkeley listened to my concerns,” she explained. “They heard my voice and said, ‘We’re here for you.’ They made me think this was actually possible.” Working together to make education affordable Through the Veterans Administration Chapter 35 Dependent Education Assistance Program, Nilsa received financial assistance to pursue her degree. She contacted Edward Dennis, Berkeley’s Assistant Vice President, Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, and asked if there were any other scholarships available because even with the VA assistance, it would be financially challenging to attend college. Together, Nilsa and Edward proposed a new scholarship at Berkeley College that would provide up to a 50 percent reduction on Berkeley College tuition for spouses of 100 percent disabled Veterans, easing the financial burden on her and her family. The new Berkeley scholarship is entitled the CH35 Assistance Scholarship and is open to spouses and children of veterans that have received a disability rating of 100% for service-connected disability compensation.*Proud to support our Servicemembers and Veterans “Nilsa cares very much about her community and proposed the CH35 Assistance Scholarship,” according to Mr. Dennis. “Spouses of disabled veterans face many challenges, so Berkeley College is honored to help them achieve their academic goals with the CH35 Assistance Scholarship. Berkeley has been a longtime and proud supporter of military aligned students and is a leader in providing the CH35 Assistance Scholarship to help the family members of 100 percent disabled Veterans.” Empowering others to achieve “Nilsa is an outstanding academic student,” continued Mr. Dennis. “And she’s equally passionate about bettering herself and empowering others to do the same. She is humble, hardworking, and an inspiration for others. Her proposed scholarship is now a reality, and I’m proud and honored to have been able to assist her in accomplishing something great that will continue to help others.” Focused on the future Nilsa’s idea of going back to school was bit terrifying and exciting. However, she has never been one to back down from a challenge. Studying during the COVID-19 pandemic, she found the infrastructure of Berkeley’s online program to be very user-friendly and convenient. “I am homeschooling my two children, studying online at Berkeley College worked for me because I could find time in between my other responsibilities,” Nilsa said. “The support was excellent. Everything was easy to follow and when I had questions, I reached out to my professors, advisor, and the help desk, who were always there to help. They help you turn your weaknesses into strengths.” A positive attitude and strong work ethic lead to success “If it wasn’t for the strong, intelligent, innovative people at Berkeley College, I wouldn’t be able to tell you that I graduated with my Associate’s degree in Legal Studies. I wouldn’t be working toward my Bachelor’s degree and I wouldn’t be able to tell you that I made the President’s List last semester!” Looking ahead Nilsa’s educational journey is far from over. She expects to graduate this year with her Bachelor’s degree and plans to continue into a Master’s degree program in Social Work. Ultimately, she hopes to attend law school and work in Civil Rights law and Family law. “There is so much in the world right now that needs to be changed,” she noted. “As an advocate for families, women’s right, and child welfare, I intend to make a difference.” Hoping to inspire others As for other military spouses, Nilsa hopes she can be an inspiration of what’s possible…and a reminder to never give up. “The situation impacts so many,” she said. “If I can help to be an inspiration to just one other person facing the same challenges, it makes it all worth it.” She also pointed out, “So many people in my situation are afraid to take that first step. They might be afraid of higher education because they’ve been out of school due to their spouse’s service. Maybe they think they’re not ‘educated enough’ to be ready for college. Or they’re afraid of the cost of college. But fear will get you nowhere.” She went on, “It can be hard to navigate all of these things, but in the long run, it’s harder not to. Like the soldiers we love, determination and dedication will get you through.” * To be eligible, a student must (i) be enrolled full-time or part-time in a degree program at Berkeley College, (ii) be the spouse or child of a Totally and Permanently Disabled Veteran and (iii) provide a copy of CH35 eligibility or VA Benefit letter showing a rating of 100% and verification of DEERS enrollment.  May be combined with the Berkeley College Grant and Berkeley TAP/TAG Grant. Cannot be combined with any other Berkeley College grants or scholarships. Satisfactory Academic Progress must be maintained for renewal of scholarship.
