The Gilded Age's Broadway Divas: Mrs. Bruce (Celia Keenan-Bolger)

Despite having a largely underdeveloped Downstairs role in The Gilded Age, Mrs. Bruce runs the Russell household like a tight ship. From averting near-disastrous soup escapades, to catching escaped dogs in the dusty streets, she approaches her job with no-nonsense competence, all while totally unable to reach the high shelves.

For the first time, Celia Keenan-Bolger (45) has broken free of her child typecast cage to play a fully grown adult with adult responsibilities and it must be such a thrill for her. Those unfamiliar with Celia may not be aware of her illustrious career playing children on Broadway as a grown adult.

In 2005, Celia (26) made her Broadway debut in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as twelve-year-old Olive Ostrovsky, a precocious spelling bee contestant who should have won, dammit, and I'll die on that hill. In 2011, she (31) played thirteen-year-old Molly Aster in Peter and the Starcatcher, nominated for a Tony the same year as her brother Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Newsies). In 2018, she (40) starred in To Kill a Mockingbird as six-to-nine-year-old Scout Finch, for which she won a Tony. This coming spring, Celia (46) will once again be a child on Broadway as she takes on the role of Jessica Lange's teenaged daughter in Mother Play. (List non-exhaustive)

#1: "Green Finch and Linnet Birds," Sweeney Todd (2002)

In one of her earliest professional roles, Celia (24) takes on sixteen-year-old Johanna Barker, the daughter of the titular Sweeney Todd, who has become Judge Turpin's ward. This is not great for her. But the role was. Too often, this particular song gets the short end of the stick. It's long, slow, and very high, yet Celia approaches it with a controlled vibrato that makes us all sigh in relief.

The Kennedy Center production featured a fantastic cast, including Mary Beth Peil as The Beggar Woman, Broadway's Leading Man Brian Stokes Mitchell as Sweeney Todd, and our very own Agnes van Rhijn, Christine Baranski as Mrs. Lovett.

#2: The Light in the Piazza - Pre-Broadway (2003)

Before Kelli O'Hara took on the role of Clara Johnson, a young woman whose mental development stunted at age twelve after being kicked by a horse, the role belonged to Celia Keenan-Bolger (25). Ultimately, when the production moved on from Chicago, the creative team decided they wanted a Clara who was a little older. Kelli, who had been playing Francesca, the sister-in-law, was unwilling to "steal" a role from someone she considered a dear friend, but either way, Celia was out, so Kelli was in with minimal damage to their friendship, which persists today.

However. Some years later, when South Pacific was auditioning their Nellie Forbush actresses, the final three came down to Kelli O'Hara (who got it), Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Victoria Clark, who won a Tony for playing Margaret, Clara's mother, in Piazza. Talk about awkward.

#3: "The I Love You Song," The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2005)

Losing out on Clara wasn't all thunderclouds for Celia (26). Shortly after, she landed a role in the off-Broadway production of Spelling Bee, and when it transferred to Broadway, she received her first Tony nomination.

In this scene, Olive sings the most heartbreaking and beautiful number in the entire show. It is just devastating. Up until this point, the show is a barrel of laughs, and then suddenly you're sobbing your eyes out over a lonely little girl in a bad home situation.

Will Celia Keenan-Bolger ever be allowed to play an adult again? How long until she is no longer able to play children? How did she get the role of Mrs. Bruce if she's only allowed to play kids? All questions we have no answers to.

Nevermore

Paring: Rooster x OC Commader Skylar "Raven" Blackwood

Warnings: Language, drinking, Mentions of violence, Allusions to Smut. Minors DNI 18+

Part 2: Once upon a midnight dreary

A sickly silence fell upon the room after Raven had finished introducing herself. She scanned her eyes across the group and found Rooster's face. His expression was stonewall and stalwart, but she could just catch the glimpse of angst in his eyes. He was hurt, angry, betrayed.

"Well" Maverick cleared his throat breaking the silence. "If there is nothing else to say, you are dismissed. I want everyone on the tarmac ready to go in 30." He stated the 12 aviators quietly gathered their belongings and left their seats to head to the locker rooms. Maverick and Raven stayed behind.

"Well, that could have gone better." Raven finally said. "Rooster definitely hates me now."

"Why is that Commander?" Pete asked her, having no idea of their relationship.

"Bradley and I went to flight school together... and we dated. After graduation orders took us to different parts of the world. Last night I ran into him at the Hard Deck as well as the other members of you squadron, and well, I lied to them about who I was and why I was here." Raven confessed.

"I see." Maverick countered. "Well, if it makes you feel any better Raven, a few months ago he hated me too, but we are better now. If there is one thing I know about Rooster is that no matter how upset he is with anyone, deep down, he wants to forgive them.

"Hopefully you're right Commodore Mitchell." She nodded her head. "Please, call me Maverick, Mav, or even Pete... Commodore is just... to formal." He told her.

"Yes Sir, well, shall go fly?" She asked turning to leave.

Maverick stood there a moment more as he watched her walk away. Raven had the same air about her that Charlie did back when Maverick had first met her. Professional, no nonsense, poised. She was disciplined and unwavering... everything he wasn't.

"Greetings Avaitors, this is your Commader speaking. Commodore Mitchell briefed me about your flying abilities and your dogfighting skills. I have to say I am impressed, but there is still a lot for everyone to learn. This mission requires more active combat and dogfighting than most of you have seen, so, working in teams you are going to try and shoot me down." Raven told everyone through the coms system.

"Commader." Payback spoke up "Yes Payback?" She asked. "Last time we were in this situation we had a little bet with Maverick... first to get shot down does 200 push-ups... care to wager that?" He asked with a chuckle.

"Make it 250 and you're on." Raven replied without missing a beat. "Deal" Fanboy answered for the group while everyone else let out a collective groan.

"Okay then, Finch, Garcia, time to put your money where your mouth is." Raven challenged them before engaging the pair who were flanked by Coyote.

Maverick stayed on the tarmac listening and watching where he came to a harsh realization.

Skylar may have acted like Charlie on the ground, but she flew like him. She was precise, agile, and daring. He watched as one by one she shot down the teams, never wavering. She acted and reacted, not thinking, just doing, she was in total control of herself... almost emotionless.

He listened in as she provided feedback to all of the pilots:

"You're too slow"

"Level out your wings, too loose on the turn"

"Trust your wingman, they are there for a reason"

"Reaction time is everything"

"Listen to your WSO, it's their job to know what's the radar"

"Communicate people or you are dead!"

Soon the last pair was about to go up in the air against her... Rooster and Hangman. Everyone else had been shot down and were sore from push-ups as they waited in the briefing room licking their wounds.

"Alright Rooster, you read to do this?" Hangman asked as they cruised. "Keep your head level don't let your feelings get in the way man." Jake reminded him.

"Yeah Bagman I know, control myself" Rooster huffed out. He couldn't hide the distain in his voice. He was clearly upset with Raven for lying to him. The girl he knew back in flight school never would have, which he never would have thought Skylar, his Skylar would be the pilot she is today.

"Alright Raven where are you?" Rooster called out.

"Right here Roosie? Did you miss me?" She asked dropping down from above them and turning inverted.

"Geez Raven, that's a very Maverick move right there... any relation?" Hangman joked. Maverick winced at the the comment.

"No sir Hangman, but then again I never knew who my father was, maybe we can talk about my daddy issues while you do your push-ups" Raven shot back.

Pete's eyes went wide at her comment. She didn't know her father. Charlie never told her who he was, which meant she didn't know that there was a very his chance that she was Maverick's daughter.

"Did I just strike a never there Rave?" Hangman taunted her.

"No Bagman you didn't, I'm fully aware of my daddy issues thank you very much. Only think I know is my mother told me was that he was a Top Gun pilot... apparently really good but a big ego, I decided to become better than him." Raven seethed back, the first hit of emotion coming through her voice.

"Well let's see how good you are then sweets... Rooster, do some of that pilot shit" Hangman called out as Rooster spun around out from under Raven in an attempt to throw her off and get missle lock.

"Really? Positioning for a cobra maneuver? That's child's play boys." Raven said before taking a deep dive and then immediately pulling up shooting in between them. Hangman and Rooster broke off in opposite direction, exactly what Raven wanted to happen.

She went after Hangman first Rooster used that to his advantage to come after her.

"Come on Rooster drop down off the perch!" Hangman angerly called out as Rooster went back to his old ways of over thinking.

"Yeah Rooster, take the shot" Raven taunted him.

But he was too late, Raven climbed quickly and by the time Rooster dropped down he accidentally locked in on Hangman while Raven spun behind him and took him out.

When all the jets were back on the ground Hangman jumped out of his plane angry. "What the fuck was that man!" He yelled at Rooster slamming his helmet down.

"I don't know I.... I just over thought it! Rooster defended throwing his hands up.

"And that's why you're both dead. You thought. You can't think up there. You have to do. You think up there and are as good as dead." Raven stated to them before walking away.

"Damn she sounds just like Mav. Even walks like him and flys like him too." Hangman stated. "Wouldn't it be something if she was Mitchell's kid" Jake laughed.

"I think Mav would have told me he had a kid." Rooster stated back. "Not if he didn't know. She said she didn't know her dad... what if her mom never told him either. She said her mom used to work for Top Gun, and she was born in '87 what year did Mav and your dad go through... '86?" Jake continued.

"It's not possible... Maverick may have been stupid probably still is, but I don't think he would have been dumb enough to sleep with an instructor." Rooster hesitated.

"He was stupid enough to bang an admiral's daughter... more than once, you really think an instructor was off limits?" Jake's asked before heading in to the locker rooms.

Rooster stood there on the tarmac, gears spinning on his head.

He thought back to flight school. He had met Charlie when she came once for family day. She gushed about his parents and how she couldn't believe little Bradley who sat on piano tops and wore cowboy hats had grown up.

She spoke fondly of his mother when she had come out to visit his father during his time at Top Gun and how much his death had hurt her.

However he didn't notice it then, but now he recalls how she became visibly uncomfortable when he spoke about Maverick, to the point of where she changed the topic completely... almost as if she didn't want Skylar to know about him.

Now he knew why. "Mav, you sly son of a bitch" Rooster muttered before taking off to find his God father.

He saw Maverick walking in the halls towards his office.

"Maverick, Mav....Pete... Commodore Mitchell!" He called out finally getting him to stop.

"Yes Lieutenant Comander Bradshaw, is there something I can do for you?" Maverick asked with an irritated tone.

"I need to speak to you... privately" Rooster whispered. Maverick wordlessly opened the door to his office and the men stepped in.

"Listen Bradley, Commader Blackwood already informed me of your... history... I don't care that you two slept together just as long as you keep it professional here and in the sky. Can't have you two getting killed on my watch." Pete told him.

"You mean keep it professional just like you did with her mother?" Rooster challenged. "Excuse me?" Maverick whipped around from his place at the window.

"You and her mother were a couple back in '86 weren't you?" Rooster asked. "You know I met Charlie back in flight school when she came for family day. She talked about my parents and how she had met me when I was younger. And I wondered how she would have, but then I remembered something mom told me when I was about 15 and wondered why you had never settled down. She said back years ago the only woman she had ever seen you truly love broke your heart when you were in Top Gun. That was Charlotte Blackwood wasn't it?" Rooster continued.

"What are you getting at Rooster? Yes, I made some questionable decisions when I was younger." Maverick sighed.

"I'm not done. Skylar said she didn't know who her father was, only that he was a pilot and was in the Top Gun program. She was born in 1987... you and Dad were in Top Gun in 1986, which was the last class her mother ever worked with." Rooster pointed out.

"So, she took another job and we lost contact. What's your point Bradley?" Maverick asked getting angry.

"So, flying with her today reminded me of someone else.... you! She flies like you, walks like you, talks like you, hell she even has the same eyes as you! She told me 'not to think' when I was flying.... sound familiar?" Rooster pressed.

"Lots of people say that Rooster, not just me." Maverick defended.

"Maybe, but the way she said it, her tone... it's... it's uncanny." Rooster said.

"You're trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill, looking for things that aren't there!" Pete raised his voice. "These are all just coincidences!"

"No they aren't! And you know it. Skylar Blackwood is your daughter isn't she?!" Rooster questioned him pointing his finger at him accusingly.

Maverick took a deep breath and leaned in his desk and lowered his head.

"Yes Rooster, I think she is." Pete finally sighed out.

Just then both men jerked their heads as they head a clipboard clatter to the floor and echo in the room.

Both of there eyes grew wide as a stunned Skylar 'Raven' Blackwood stood in the door of Maverick's office. She was frozen and there was no doubt that she had obviously heard the confession that had just left the senior pilot's mouth.

Blackwood Ch. 2

Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw x fem!Blackwood!reader

Summary: (Y/N) ‘Finch’ Blackwood had grown up her whole life without knowing the true identity of her father. She had always thought herself to be content without knowing who he was, but when her work crosses paths with his own, they both face challenges in trying to figure themselves out. Meanwhile, she doesn’t know that her childhood best friend has made his own way through the Navy, and will be joining them on their adventures.

A/N: I apologize for how slow I have gotten about posting pic updates...everything is picking up so I have a very limited amount of time to be able to work on anything. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this part. I think it's my favorite chapter I've written for anything so far. Let me know what you think!

Prologue Chapter 1

Masterlist

Finch woke up the next day feeling more than ready to meet everybody (again) and get the ball rolling on the mission. She had been debriefed by her team a few days prior, learning her position regarding the call to duty. She would be assistant to whoever the actual mission instructor was, which she found interesting, seeing as there were plenty of people who could teach these naval officers.

She had been instructed to wear her khakis for the most part unless informed otherwise and did just that. She adjusted the ribbons below her collar bone, checking to make sure that her hair was in its neat bun before exiting her room. The housing for the base was the same as it always had been, somewhat outdated but nice enough.

Other officers were already moving about the halls, notably Bob and Phoenix, who were walking towards the hangar in their flight suits. She guessed that they would be getting right to it, then. She wasn’t privy to the plans of the instructor; hell, she didn’t even know who the instructor was.

Making a mental note to ask who she would be assistant to, Finch made her way towards Admiral Simpson’s office, checking the time on her watch. She was a little early, but that never really hurt anybody. Arriving to his door, she knocked firmly, her hands hanging at her sides.

Cyclone opened the door rather quickly, as if he had been on his way out. “Oh, there you are, Lieutenant Commander. We were just about to head to the hangar.” He said, opening the door wider. He revealed Warlock behind him, as well as the old timer from The Hard Deck the night before. She guessed he really was here for a purpose, then.

“My apologies, Admiral. I was on my way to ask you a question, but I’m sure it can wait.” She stated, looking back to meet his gaze.

“Well, I don’t see why you can’t ask it on the way there.” He suggested, stepping out of the office along with the others. Finch fell in line next to the dark-haired man from the night before, behind the two admirals.

“I was just curious who exactly I would be assisting in instructing these candidates, sir.” She told him, glancing over at the man next to her.

Warlock looked behind him to take note of the two, almost having to do a double take when he had looked ahead of him again. He had known Maverick for a while, but the woman next to him had an uncanny resemblance to the daredevil aviator. He could have sworn they were related somehow.

“Captain Pete Mitchell, callsign ‘Maverick’, at your service, ma’am.” He turns to Finch, reaching his hand out for her to shake.

She takes his hand, a smile on her face as she shakes it. “Lieutenant Commander (Y/N) Blackwood, callsign ‘Finch.’ It’s a pleasure to meet you, Captain. I look forward to working with you.” She tells him, turning to look ahead as they continue towards the hangar.

Maverick nearly falters at her surname, the memories flashing in front of him. The blonde hair, red lipstick, night after night tangled between the sheets of her bed. He left her to the wolves and didn’t even think about calling her. Not to see if she was okay, if she had gotten that big promotion she had been talking about, and definitely not to see if she had a kid.

The trek to the hangar was suddenly long, at least it was for him. He hadn’t put a thought into the possibility that Charlie would even want to have a child, especially with how career-driven she was. They had never crossed the discussion of children, seeing as he knew that he was never around for long.

He took interest in her name. Blackwood. Not that of another man, but Charlies. Thoughts raced through his head until they finally made it to the hangar. He stayed back, as they had discussed, and watched her follow Cyclone and Warlock outside.

Finch thought it was weird how silent Maverick had gotten after she introduced herself but decided to brush it off. Some people were put off about her rank, considering her years of service and age, but she was proud to be where she was. Her mom and stepdad were proud of her, and that’s what had always mattered most to her.

She took her place to the right of the podium, her hands behind her back. She saluted when Cyclone and Warlock entered the hangar, returning to her previous position once they were put to ease. She observed the candidates, finding Roosters handsome face amongst them. She kept her eyes on him momentarily before zoning back into the introduction Warlock was giving them.

“While you have an instructor, they will have an assistant. I present to you (Y/N) Blackwood, callsign ‘Finch.’ She will be a secondary source, so she will remain on the sidelines with Hondo for the time being.” He introduces her, motioning to her to join him.

She quickly moved behind the podium, nodding to the candidates. “Thank you, sir. I am glad to be here to help you all achieve the goals of this mission, which will be laid out by Admiral Simpson and Rear Admiral Bates. I will mostly be in the background; however, I will still be able to help you come up with solutions to problems you are faced with while in training.” She informed them, her face neutral.

“I will now turn the podium back over to Rear Admiral Bates.” She stated, returning to the spot she had been in previously. Warlock proceeded to go through the motions and details of the mission. The heat from the sun had a bead of sweat rolling down her face as she listened with the candidates.

“I will now introduce your instructor,” Warlock said, the door to the other end of the hangar opening to reveal Maverick. “Captain Pete Mitchell, callsign ‘Maverick.’”

Warlock left the podium, standing next to Cyclone. She watched as Maverick replaced him, the looks on the faces of the aviators a hilarious sight if she ever saw one. They hadn’t realized that they had thrown out their instructor for the next three weeks. Her eyes briefly moved to examine Rooster. His jaw was taut with tension, his gaze diverted elsewhere. She found that odd, but she decided not to question it. For now, anyways.

Soon enough, Maverick had announced that they would all be taking turns against him in the sky for their first training exercise. The group was dismissed shortly after, all of them going to get their flight gear and to do preliminary checks on their aircraft.

Finch had followed Cyclone and Warlock inside, looking around for Hondo. He was assigned to the mission as well, and she knew that they would be good sources of support for each other. She eventually found him amongst the halls, already on his way outside to monitor flights for the candidates.

“Hondo! It’s good to see you!” She exclaimed, greeting him with a short hug. They had been on assignment together a year or two ago and had stayed in touch here and there since then.

“Finch! It’s good to see you too! So, are we keeping an eye on these rugrats or are we waiting to see how bad Maverick beats them down?” He asked her, a wide grin decorating his face.

She considered the question for a moment. She shrugged her shoulders, chuckling, “I have no idea, Hondo. I hardly know the man, let alone what he’s capable of. We’ll just have to see.” She answered, following him as he began to make his way outside.

She made another mental note, she had a lot of them, to give her mom a call. She figured she might know something about him, especially since she could have worked at Top Gun in the time that Maverick had attended.

Once they made it into the scorching light of the sun, she pulled the aviators that were hiding in her back pocket out and slid them over her eyes. She thanked whatever higher deity there was that she had put on a lot of sunscreen before she left her room, because she would need it.

They each had communication radios given to them on their way out to help them monitor who came in and out of the airfield, but soon after the first set of candidates were in the air, it become very clear that her and Hondo’s jobs would be about more than just monitoring who flew in and out.

Payback, who Finch had spotted the night before at the bar, bet the crew 200 pushups to whoever was shot down first. This essentially meant that she and Hondo would have to count every pushup each of them did when or if Maverick shot them down. This was not how she thought her first day on the mission would go, but here she is.

Even though she wasn’t up in the air with them, she could still hear the groans and moans of the pilots when Maverick did indeed shoot them down. She wasn’t exactly shocked, seeing as he had about 30 plus years of experience on them. All the same, she wasn’t looking forward to counting the pushups.

Eventually, the first set of candidates made it back down and ensued with their pushups. She had originally thought it was all three of them, Payback, Fanboy and Rooster, but only Rooster showed up to take part.

“Rooster, where are the other two?” She asked him as he unzipped the upper part of his flight suit, setting his helmet on the ground.

Grunting, Rooster turned to her. “I got shot down first. According to the agreement, that means I do the pushups.”

She nodded, watching him get into position to start. Hondo spared her this time and began the counting. Even though she wasn’t counting, she couldn’t help herself from staring at the muscle exposed from the short sleeve of his black t-shirt. She instantly remembers that she owes him. She had completely forgotten the ride he had given her the night before in the scramble to prepare for the morning brief and getting things in order.

Lost in her train of thought, Finch comes back to about a hundred pushups in, moving her gaze elsewhere. She could hear the conversations over the radio were now becoming active, so she decided to zone into those instead.

The banter between Hangman, Phoenix and Bob is hilarious to her, and she can’t help but let out a chuckle. ‘Baby on Board’ really was something else, she guessed. The grunts from Rooster brought her attention back to the man, finding him to suddenly be standing right next to her. Man, he was fast at doing pushups.

Sweat was dripping down his face, seeping into his mustache. He licked his lips, picking up his gear. Finch did her best to look away and not stare at his stupid handsome face. She just needed to get through the day and focus. She was stuck on him now, she knew it.

Rooster nodded to both her and Hondo, walking away towards the main building of the base. She would have to work hard in order to avoid falling for him. She could already feel herself diving deep.

The day progressed, every single one of the aviators up for selection on the mission doing the set of pushups now. Everybody would be going twice, as Hondo had described to her about halfway through the first hop. This would be absolutely perfect…probably having to watch Rooster do another set of 200 pushups…

Finch had tuned things out for the better part of the day, casually counting for the aviators when it was their turn to face the consequences of their friends’ actions. Their short lunch felt as though it had been forever ago by the time the sun had started to set, and all she wanted to do was go home and soak in a bath.

Just as she was beginning to daydream, Finch heard a rush of words from the radio. Maverick and Rooster were basically one on one at this point. She couldn’t see them from her position on the ground, but she knew it wasn’t good when she overheard the loud, blaring beeps over the airways. She wasn’t exactly sure what was happening, but it was all over relatively quickly.

It wasn’t long before a very flustered and angry Rooster arrived to serve his dues. He practically threw his gear onto the ground, unzipping his flight suit again. He wasted no time in starting his pushups, staring directly ahead. She counted for him, crossing her arms.

She thought that he seemed relatively determined to get it over with, but he continued well past the 2ooth pushup. She tried to engage him in conversation, but he completely ignored her. He was somewhere else entirely. She decided it would be better to just leave him be, and informed him that he was dismissed once he finished doing whatever it was he was trying to do.

Finch made her way off base as quickly as she could, considering she still had to call her mom and make sure she was doing okay. She also wanted to try and distract herself from the barrage of thoughts she was starting to have about Rooster. The man had a grip on her mind that even she didn’t know how to handle.

The allotted housing was quickly in view, much to Finch’s relief. She really needed to get away from it all, and it was only day one of the mission.

Entering through the front door, she immediately slipped off her service shoes. They always gave her blisters if she wore them often, and she’d been wearing them for the last week or so. She made her way to the bedroom, stripping herself of the button up and the belt. She had half undone her pants by the time she made it there, immediately reaching for the top drawer.

She soon found herself completely undressed, throwing her uniform into the hamper at the door. Her bra was soon to follow, a relieving sigh leaving her lips. She dug through her drawers to find a comfortable pair of shorts and a t-shirt to change into. Eventually finding something, she slipped them both on, flopping onto her bed.

Finch found her phone somewhere amongst the mess that was her nightstand. She tended to leave her phone at the housing complex so that she wouldn’t get distracted by any texts or calls. She unlocked it, opening to a background of her and her mom on their vacation a few years ago. She smiled at the memory before scrolling going to her texts and finding her mom’s contact, pressing the call button.

Pressing her phone to her ear, she waited as it rang a few times before her mom picked up.

“Hey, honey,” Charlies says through the speaker, light shuffling noises heard on the other side. “How’s everything going down there?” Finch sighs, making herself comfortable. “It’s going okay right now. You know I can’t give you details, classified information and all that, but my team is rather interesting to say the least.”

“Well, can you at least tell me who the instructor is? I find it interesting that they brought back Top Gun graduates for a mission…” Charlie asked her daughter.

“Well, I’m sure you’ll know him, since he graduated back during the time you were assisting on their projects,” Finch told her, shuffling on the bed a bit. “His callsign is Maverick, if that rings any bells.”

Charlie immediately goes silent on the other end of the line. Finch can sense the tension building from the other side of the country.

“Mom? You there?” She asks, sitting up.

Charlie is still silent. She can feel the swell in her chest at the mention of his name, and it takes every fiber of her being not to become choked up. Her baby girl was working with her dad, and she didn’t even know it.

“I’m here, honey.” Charlie finally replies, trying to hold herself together.

“Everything okay? I don’t know much about him, but if you don’t want to talk about it, then that’s okay.” Finch’s curiosity is peaked now, but she knows how hard it can be for her mom to talk about the past sometimes.

“Honey, I…I don’t think I can speak to you about it. Not today, at least. I’ll tell you soon, though. I just need to take care of some things first.” Charlie informs her, still holding back her initial reaction.

“I understand, mom. You’ll tell me when you’re ready. I should probably get going, though. I still need to fix something for dinner and make sure I’ve got everything in line for tomorrow.” Finch says, her fingers playing with a loose thread on the comforter.

“Okay, honey. I love you, a bushel, and a peck. I’ll talk to you later.” Charlie finishes, waiting for Finch.

“I love you too, mom. A barrel, and a heap.” Finch ends the conversation, hanging up on her mom after they both exchange goodbyes.

Finch goes about her evening as normal but is plagued by the curiosity from the conversation with her mother. Who was Maverick, and what relation did he have to her mother?
