New Territory (Part 2)

Previous chapter
Fandom: High&Low
Pairing: Murayama x f!reader
Word count: 1.9k
Warnings: f!reader, established relationship, friends to lovers, mentions of cheating, mentions of abusive relationships and domestic violence, mentions of pregnancy and pregnancy trapping, Murayama has a breeding kink (yes, that's the reveal), kissing, mentions of sex but no smut in this chapter, a lot of fluff actually ( with some angst)
--
"Here you go!" You gladly accepted the hot beverage he offered you. You didn't even realize how cold you were until you entered the room. His apartment was nothing special, it looked exactly like you'd imagine a bachelor's apartment to look like. You could definitely scratch the wife and kids - no woman has ever stepped a foot into this place, of that you were sure. "Are you sure you're okay? Do you need anything? I can get you a blanket or-"
"I'm fine. All I need is for you to be honest with me. I can handle the truth, whatever it is." You assured him, this time looking straight into his eyes. No more excuses, no more escaping. He had to tell you the truth.
"I..I don't even know where to start, to be honest.." he admitted. "It's so stupid, you'll probably just laugh at me and then leave."
"I won't, I promise. I just want to know."
Finally. Something inside him must have broken, because for the first time since you've met him, he finally opened up to you. For the next couple of hours you'd sit there, quietly listening to him talking about his past relationships, how horribly all of them ended and how scared he was about history repeating itself. He struggled to explain why exactly all of that happened, carefully picking each and every word, but after a while he admitted that it was because of his..unconventional sexual preferences. More specifically, his fantasies of purposefully getting a woman pregnant.
"So.. like a breeding kink?" You asked without flinching. You were surprised, to say the least, but also oddly relieved. He wasn't cheating on you, he didn't have a secret life, he wasn't a serial killer either. And he did love you, he loved you enough to be terrified of potentially losing or hurting you. You still weren't really sure what to think about his peculiar interests, but you knew one thing - you weren't going to leave him over something like this. You were shocked to learn how ashamed he was of something so harmless, so much so that he thought he'd have to hide it, or he'd lose you forever.
"Yeah..It was just a fantasy at first, roleplay, I guess. But when I met you, when I realized I'm in love with you..it suddenly became very real. I couldn't stop thinking about getting you pregnant with my child, then another one as soon as you've given birth.. When you mentioned being on the pill, my first thought was to swap it for something else without telling you..That's when I realized how far it all went and decided to ghost you, but I only did it to protect you.." he wasn't looking you in the eyes. He couldn't, but you knew how much pain he was in, you felt it. You were hurt too. Listening to him talk about his ex-girlfriends calling him a freak, a sexual deviant, even throwing a glass bottle at him at one point..He didn't deserve any of that.
"Protect me from what?"
"Myself."
You couldn't handle it anymore. Rising from your seat, you rushed to comfort him, your lips seeking out his.
"And why on earth would you do that when you're the only thing I need?"
His eyes widened in surprise. Your words clearly went against what he expected, but you didn't give him a chance to respond, closing the distance between you, desperate to feel the warmth of his body again. Words were the last thing you needed at that moment. You loved him, you missed him, and you needed him - now more than ever.
A couple hours later, you left his apartment with mixed feelings. On one hand you were ecstatic to have him back, to know the truth behind his disappearance and to finally have him trust you enough to let you touch him, be intimate for the first time since you've met. But on the other hand you were worried..your first time wasn't as exciting and romantic as you've expected and fantasized. It was clear that he was holding back, trying not to hurt you or weird you out, despite assuring him a thousand times that it's okay. That he's okay. Even though both of you finished, neither of you was really satisfied. You could tell how disappointed with himself Murayama was, and it hurt you.
After all was said and done, you've had a long, serious, and long overdue conversation. You admitted to him that you've never thought about children on your own but with him..if he would step up and support you and the baby, you could actually see the two of you starting a family of your own. And then there was the whole sexual aspect of it - you were especially curious about that. Murayama, however, didn't seem too convinced, fear still visible in his eyes.
He asked for you to give him some time to figure everything out, but he also promised that he would never ghost you again, leave without a word. He promised he'd prove to you that he's a good boyfriend and, potentially, a good father. He made it clear that, should you not want children or be into the same things as him, he'd never force or convince you to participate in them anyway. Your consent, wellbeing and happiness were his priorities, so much more important than his fantasies and kinks.
And so you decided to give him a last chance - no more lies, no more excuses. No more ghosting. And so for the next few weeks you slowly tried to rebuild your relationship, giving each other time and space, always being there for the other, always being honest about your doubts, worries and expectations. So far it was going good, you could with all confidence say that you trusted him, the fear of him abandoning you again slowly dissipating, though not completely gone yet. You were trying your best too, making sure he knew how much you loved and appreciated him for who he was, with all his flaws and quirks and kinks.
The only aspect of your relationship still remaining rather unsatisfactory was your sex life. Murayama's trauma from past relationships and the fear of losing you for the same exact reasons turned out to be a bigger problem than you'd originally thought. He insisted on having public dates, your first time remaining your only one up until that point. It annoyed you, admittedly, he was your boyfriend after all and you wanted him. All of him. You were growing tired of only eating at restaurants, only watching movies at the theater, only spending time with him in public. You felt more like his friend rather than his lover. But you endured it all, telling yourself to be patient. As soon as he realizes you won't leave him, no matter what, he'll come around, you were sure of that. You just didn't know that day would come sooner than expected.
It was a beautiful Saturday morning - perfect weather, your schedule free for the whole day, and Murayama right by your side. You wished you could just see him in his apartment instead of a park, but you tried to focus on the positives. There was a certain charm in having a little picnic together, enjoying the sun and each other's company. He even bought you flowers, something nobody else has ever done for you before. You appreciated small gestures like that.  Needless to say, the date was going great.
Well, almost perfect. With how beautiful the weather was, it didn't surprise you that the park was full of people - happy couples walking hand in hand, families with children enjoying a day off, older people walking their dogs. Even though you knew these people did nothing wrong - most of them were probably just trying to enjoy their weekend after a long week of work or school, and they had the right to do so, at that moment you wished they'd all stay at home instead. The loud noise, children screaming and dogs barking mixed with the smells - some quite pleasant, others not so much - was definitely taking away from the quality time the two of you were hoping for, and needed so desperately.
You really tried to focus on Murayama, unwilling to let such a small inconvenience ruin your time together, but he knew you too well, immediately noticing that something was wrong. It didn't take long for him to figure out what it was either. It saddened him to see your disappointed, slightly annoyed expression, but he knew it was for the best. He hoped you understood it too. He also hoped you knew how much he appreciated you trying so hard, fighting for your relationship. Nobody has ever done so much for him, nobody has even tried to understand him before.
His emotions have started to take over, his brain full of thoughts about your future together, his heart full of love for you. He wanted to express himself, make sure you know how much he loves you, make sure you feel how much he loves you, but just as he was getting ready to say something, he felt something small but heavy fly right by his face, missing it by mere inches. Murayama was caught off guard, embarrassment hitting him at the realization that he wasn't, in fact, dying an agonizing death, but was simply the target of an impressive, albeit completely misdirected, ball throw. It was hard not to get embarrassed when you looked at him like that, barely able to contain laughter.
Not sure how to react when he was finally approached by the visibly terrified child - who was also the author of said throw - Murayama simply tried to play it off, congratulating them on their skills, and offering to teach them how to aim better next time. Better safe than sorry, right?
You could see the little kid's relief slowly growing into admiration when your boyfriend suddenly got up and joined their game for a short time. The whole scene was so unexpected, so spontaneous and out of character for him, but for some reason you couldn't help but feel touched by the way he interacted with the kids. The way he made them laugh uncontrollably, finally letting loose and laughing along with them. Seeing him like that changed something inside you - you desperately wanted for him to be like that every day from now on. You just had to figure out how to achieve that.
He must have noticed you staring because he soon said goodbye to all the kids and came back to your spot, still a little embarrassed but also visibly happy and in a playful mood. Encouraged by your questions, he started reminiscing about his own childhood, his friends and what they would get up to in their free time. You tried to listen, always eager to learn more about him, but you caught your thoughts wandering in an..interesting direction. You were hoping he wouldn't notice, or that, if he did, he wouldn't mind.
"So..are you going to tell me what you're thinking about? Am I just that boring?" He tried to act playful, but you could see the worry in his eyes. He, understandably, still wasn't sure how strong your relationship really was.
"No, of course not! I'm sorry, I just.."
"You just what?"
"I just saw you with these kids and..I think you'd make a great dad, that's all."
You weren't exactly sure why that thought even crossed your mind, or why you shared it with Murayama, but you quickly regretted it when your eyes met his, now completely dark. You couldn't figure out what he was thinking, the look on his face one like you've never seen before.

It was 9:30, half an hour until the shop would close when he came in the door.
"This is the third night in a row you've shown up unannounced at my job, what's going on?"
"I was in the neighborhood, knew you were closing up soon, realized I missed you, and wanted to walk you home."

So I sent you pictures of the face claims for my characters.. I may use them for other fandoms too. Anyway. They are how I visualized any of my characters. And their personalities seem fitting for their gangs.
That's why I hate fandoms. I enjoy doing things at my own pace but it gets ruined because you feel like have to rush to enjoy these fandoms at the same time as everyone else, instead of getting into the fandom at their own timing. That's why I stay to myself, maybe stick to only a few close people who have lots of the same things in common - if I'm lucky - just so I can converse with people about things.
I hate how people automatically move on to the next thing, like you've completely forgotten the people and things you recently enjoying.
It's angers me about people nowadays.
I love the whole soundtrack, the music videos (the trailer videos and also actual music videos for the franchise). And I hate to admit that... Only because some of the music is traditionally the genres I prefer to listen to. But there are many songs and music videos I really did enjoy though. I still can't get the White Rascals theme out of my head.
Normally I'm not into romantic men, but Rocky is definitely a whole exception for me. You can't convince me his not a generous lover with his partner, whoever you decide to ship him with.
Actually.. I might have a lot list of kinks I can imagine between him and his woman.
At least I can say that one of the romantic relationships for my story is between Rocky Mutsugi and an original character. I'm still figuring out the other relationships though.
That's how I am. Kinda. Doesn't help that I write like how I speak, so a lot of my writing can be repetitive in a obsessively verbose way. I may have to try working on that. If I'm able to. I don't know if I can do that.
That's what I've been doing. Sometimes I take certain types of details seriously, and other times I'm trying to have fun with it if I can.
A lot of female fans were upset about how many female characters were barely in the franchise, it seemed the female characters actually appeared less in the movies than in the show.
Naomi appeared the most, occasionally the Strawberry Girls - more in the show rather than the movies. Miho never appeared again after she broke up with Nobara. Sarah is mainly seen in the background in the Mighty Warriors scenes, she only talks a few times throughout all the series too. Lara (Lala) and Eri are only included with there are any scenes involving Smokey or the Rude Boys. And, obviously, Yamato's mother and the woman who owns the bar. Oh! And Nikki in a couple scenes, only because Nikki and Tettsu were in this brief relationship.
I'll give you canonically trivia. Yamato's mother and the mothers of the Strawberry girls, they're the original Strawberry Girls before passing it on the their daughters. That was mentioned in the spinoff show for the background characters that you'd learn more about, but that was the spinoff show only available in Japan. Someone translated it.
And someone - I think the same person - translated a scene from the spinoff show about the background characters where the Naomi was with the Strawberry Girls, discussing which SWORD leader would be better to date. Which is funny considering Naomi's crush on Yamato and Oshiage's crush on Murayama.
And before I forget. When you watched the music videos.. Did you see the video for Strawberry Sadistic by E-Girls? The girls are dressed up and acting like the female gender bent equivalent to the SWORD gangs. The actresses of Naomi and Oshiage are dressed up as Oya characters if that might be entertaining for you.
Just thought I'd share that.
yea fandom nowadays kinda sucks. there’s a few people left over from the old ways of doing things, but a lot of people are just running through fandoms and then quickly abandoning them after like a month. it’s a real shame. i miss the days of fandoms spanning for years after shows ended.
i went on a whole multi-hour binge watch of the exile tribe music videos (a lot of the jsb ones tbh). i really liked a lot of them and the videos are fun to watch. i’ve watched the ‘higher ground’ video so many times now. i also love ‘break into the dark’ and ‘run this town’.
rocky definitely grew on me the more i watched, hyuga too tbh. i loved nearly all the characters. murayama definitely ranks highest for me. love that boy 🩵
my oc is def a murayama ship, though i’m toying around with a poly oc/murayama/cobra (au?) idea. she’s got connections with hyuga and ryu too tho.
the girls definitely didnt get as much development as the guys, which is a shame because they had potential to be more interesting characters. i was really expecting yamato and naomi to get together but they never really made a move towards developing it into anything. i did see that music video, i liked it! it was fun to see the girls dressing up in the aesthetics of the groups (or, well, rb and oya at least).

Today I’m being surrounded by my niece and nephew
And played various things with them !
They’re cute, so charming.
Scold
I want to properly get angry
When my niece and nephew
Did something wrong.
I’m sure that I see Mama or Papa,
The adult of my generation
To decide whether it’s good or bad.
While judging it like a child
I guess soー?
When I’m angry at children,
I always cross my arm, look at their eyes
And not let them go until they say
“I’m sorry” for what they’re sorry for.
That’s something you would hate right? lol
Tumblr media
But they’re really cute
They took initiative like
I will do it all ! Let me do it !
They borrowed and crushed each other blocks,
When they made a mistake
With their turn on game they would cry,
They would cry just by looking at mama’s eyes
There would be anyone run rampant
Somewhere in this house,
So when I’m the only one adult,
I really want to split myself into two if possible
But I’m also being spoiled
By both my older sister and mama
So I’m the one who raise their burden here!

The story of a woman working at a private child care center in Aichi Prefecture, who was reprimanded for getting pregnant before it was her "turn" as dictated by the head of the child care center, has garnered broad public attention. The child care worker and her husband apologized to the child care center director, but the woman was chided by her boss for "selfishly breaking the rules."
The case came to light in a letter the woman's 28-year-old husband wrote to the Mainichi Shimbun, published in the Feb. 28 Japanese morning edition's "Otoko no kimochi" (A man's feelings) section. At this particular child care center, the director had set up "shifts" for when the female staff could get married and pregnant. The incident shed light on the labor conditions of child care providers, who in the shadow of the more well-known issue of long child care waitlists, cannot even have their own children with peace of mind.
The response to the letter was overwhelming. Various views were shared on the internet including, "There is no future for a society that cannot simply be happy for a new life," and "The work of a child care provider is demanding but the pay is low. Day care staff cannot continue their jobs if they make considerations for the selfish demands of the parents of the children they care for."
Private broadcasters picked up the story on their infotainment shows. On one program, businesswoman and economic commentator Kazuyo Katsuma declared that the case was one of a clear violation of human rights. Meanwhile, writer Kurumi Tachibana expressed her understanding toward the child care center's policy, saying, "If someone at a female-dominated workplace gets pregnant during her 'off schedule,' her colleagues bear the brunt of it since they have to make up for the missing person's workload."
According to Yuichi Murayama, who heads Hoiku kenkyujo (Child care research institute) comprising those who are involved in child care services, setting the order in which child care providers can get married or pregnant is not uncommon at child care centers. "It happens against a backdrop of people avoiding child care as a profession, due to its low wages and long hours, and the shortage of staff that results from that," he says. "The system in which each individual child care provider accumulated experience over many years has collapsed, bringing down the quality of child care. Determining child care providers' turns for when they can have children could be interpreted as a way for them to build experience over a long span of time without having to quit their jobs."
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's statistics for 2017 show that the average child care provider is 35.8 years old, has worked continuously for 7.7 years, and earns a monthly wage of 229,000 yen -- 104,000 yen lower than the average monthly wage across all professions.
Municipal governments provide private child care centers with operation funds calculated on the basis of conditions set by the central government, including the number of children and their ages. Child care staff's wages come from that funding. Child care providers with more experience are given higher wages than the others, and the rest of the money is spread thinly among the many younger, less experienced staff. The government is touting plans to raise child care providers' wages, "but," Murayama says, "how the money is distributed is left up to the center directors, so a total rise in wages does not guarantee that each child care staffer will see that reflected in their pay."
Child care providers have long workdays, and they do not have the freedom to take long holidays. At times, they are forced to work on the weekends. According to Murayama, it's taken for granted in the industry that child care workers dedicate the daytime to providing child care, and tend to other kinds of work, such as compiling documents and preparing for events, on overtime.
The man who wrote the letter in question told the Mainichi Shimbun in an interview that although he and his wife apologized to the director of the child care center, they were told that his wife would not be permitted to take time off for getting married.
"Even if child care workers have to work overtime, if they could raise their pay, and offer different working conditions that make it easier for postnatal workers, I think more people would be willing to become child care workers and stay at their jobs," he said.
Toko Shirakawa, a journalist who is well versed in the issue of Japan's declining birthrate, says that setting the order in which workers can get pregnant happens not just at child care centers, but in other workplaces where woman comprise the majority of the staff.
A 26-year-old woman from the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka who works at a cosmetics-related company says that last year, she was told by a female supervisor at work that she would be allowed to have a child when she was about 35 years old. A document mapping out childbirth and child-rearing schedules for the woman and her 22 female colleagues was distributed by email, which came with the warning that "work gets backed up if four or more people take time off at the same time. Selfish behavior will be subject to punishment."
The woman, who is now in her second year of marriage and has fertility issues, said, "I already have trouble getting pregnant. How are they going to take responsibility if I put off getting pregnant and lose my chances to have children altogether?"
"Even when pregnancy rules are not strictly enforced, women are inclined to refrain from getting pregnant at the same time as their female colleagues who take maternity or child care leave, because they don't want to cause trouble to their other colleagues," explained journalist Shirakawa. She added, "Japanese companies fail to take into consideration the possibility of female employees giving childbirth and raising children when creating their management plans."
Below is the letter that was sent to the Mainichi Shimbun and published on Feb. 28:
Eight months into our marriage, in January of this year, we found out that my wife was pregnant. My wife, who is a child care provider, appeared glum and anxious over the news. The director at the child care center where she works had determined the order in which workers could get married or pregnant, and apparently there was an unspoken rule that one must not take their "turn" before a senior staff member. My wife and I went together to apologize. "We're sorry we got pregnant," we said.
The director grudgingly accepted our apology, but since the next day, has been chiding my wife with harsh words, such as, "How could you so selfishly break the rules?" My wife feels guilty thinking about the hard labor conditions of her colleagues. I am fully aware that we are at fault for not planning well. But who benefits from having their "turn" to have children dictated, and following those rules? Child care providers sacrifice their own children to care for the children of others. It is a noble profession that nurtures children who will forge the future of this country. I respect my wife for her commitment to her profession, and continue to encourage her. The conditions of those working to nurture and care for children are evidence of a backward country.

5 dudes’ quest to see 18 bowls in 24 days, explained by the guy organizing it
Tumblr media
Some previously disappointed USC fans are trying to make bowl attendance history, and they’re making up lots of it as they go.
It’s the afternoon on Dec. 16, a Sunday, one day after bowl season started. Scott Ostlund has to delay our phone call, because he isn’t sure what time zone he’s in.
He tells me he’ll call at “12:30.” That’s 1:30 p.m. where I am and where he was 24 hours prior. It’s 10:30 a.m. where he was 48 hours prior. It’s the kind of thing that happens when you’re attempting what he’s attempting: to go to 18 bowl games in 24 days.
Ostlund is part of a group of Southern California businessmen calling themselves The Latitudes who have come together to go on this college football postseason expedition. They aim to set a Guinness world record for bowl game attendance, and they’re in contact with Guinness’ people about what that will take. Along their journey, they’ll watch football in six states (sometimes a couple in a day) and two countries.
The journey is called “Bowlmageddon.”
It all started because USC had a bad season.
It’s a big group of guys — as many as 20, with smaller, closer groups within. They plan plenty of ambitious trips. Ostlund and many others are Trojans fans.
The group jumped on a plane and headed to Snake River Gorge to catch an eclipse recently. A few months ago, Ostlund tried to rally the group to Mount Kilimanjaro. If USC had gone bowling, like it had done every year since NCAA sanctions kept the Trojans out in 2011, some in the group would have followed the team to that game. But at 5-7, USC missed out.
“Man, I’m depressed we’re not going anywhere this year for the first time since 2011,” Ostlund tells SB Nation, describing his frame of mind after the regular season.
Another group member, Mike Arnold, offered an idea: “Let’s go to another bowl game.”
Ostlund offered another: “Well, let’s go to ‘em all?”
They won’t go to all 40 FBS bowls, but they’re attempting to hit nearly half.
Five hardcores have the motivation and the time to shoot for all 18. Those five are Ostlund, Arnold, Brian Richardson, Mike Fyhrie, and Jared Murayama. Ostlund says about 13 guys will fly in and out for different parts of the trip, and 12 or 13 of the group will be joining for a stretch of four games in three days in what they’re calling the Texas Loop.
The full bowl list, as it’s sketched out now: the FCS Celebration, the Camellia, the New Orleans, the Boca Raton, the Frisco, the Gasparilla, the Bahamas, the Birmingham, the Dollar General, the First Responder, the Independence, the Texas, the Alamo, the Peach, the Orange, the Holiday, the Rose, and the Playoff National Championship.
When Ostlund told Richardson about the plan, his response was simple.
“I looked at him and I said, ‘Scott, you’re totally insane. Count me in.’”
Tumblr media

“Bowlmageddon’s” core group at the Celebration Bowl
The obvious question: how much money is this gonna cost?
Richardson said in a radio interview the whole thing would be less than $500,000 collectively. Ostlund told me he’s not sure what the number will be.
“I don’t mean to sound wasteful, but I don’t think a group can do this if we’re having to track it exactly amongst everybody,” he says. “You have to have a little elasticity between each other when it comes to money. We joke that we’ll have fines for anyone that talks about the business on the trip or calls home to their wife too often. One of the kinda rules is we try not to keep tabs on each other. Everyone’s pretty good about throwing in as we go.”
Part of the reason is that the travel plan is evolving, and it’s not even finished. For instance, their original posted schedule had them hitting the Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, then the Cure Bowl (Orlando), and then the New Orleans Bowl, all on Dec. 15. Instead they went from the Celebration to the Camellia (Montgomery, Ala.) to the New Orleans.
Right after Christmas, the original schedule had the Cheez-It Bowl (Phoenix), then the Music City (Nashville), and finally the Alamo (San Antonio), all by Dec. 28. Instead, as of publication, they’ll go to the First Responder Bowl (Dallas) on the 26th, then to the Independence Bowl (Shreveport, La.) and Texas Bowl (Houston) on the 27th, and end up in San Antonio on the 28th. (That’s the Texas Loop.) They’ll barnstorm the Lone Star State in an RV, which Ostlund is going to get lined up as soon as he hangs up with me.
It might wind up being more than 18 games. They aren’t contracting a travel agency or anything like that. ESPN featured them during them during the New Orleans Bowl, and they were angling for 20-something at that point, the network’s Olivia Dekker reported.

Bowlmageddon on ESPN
A post shared by @ bowlmageddon on Dec 16, 2018 at 7:06am PST
Weather could always create unforseen delays, but snow is unlikely to get in the way on a trip that goes between Southern California and the South.
“It’s a pretty resourceful group,” Ostlund told me.
Ostlund’s involved with a real-estate company that has rental houses all over. One’s in New Orleans and another’s in Florida. “By coincidence, some of these things are lining up for us to stay in some of those properties,” he says.
Going with the flow was already a defining theme the day after the first bowls.
“It’s by plane, by car, by Segway — however you have to get there. Surprisingly, this year it lines up really, really well. You don’t really have three bowl games where you can drive to each one. So it was natural to start in Atlanta and to drive to Montgomery and drive to New Orleans. Now we have this day break, so we’re gonna rest and eat a bunch of crawfish. Go on a swamp tour. Then tomorrow, we’re gonna fly to the Boca Raton Bowl.”
These guys are somewhat winging it, but I still wanted to ballpark a cost, so I pretended I was making this 18-in-24 trip myself. I calculated it to about $10,000 for one person to go solo, conservatively.
I started with some assumptions: that my home base was Southern California (like theirs) and that I could call in some favors and use some connections along the way.
The logistics are a little fun to figure out. It’s like a puzzle. For instance: it’s possible to swing the Bahamas Bowl on Dec. 21 without spending a night on the islands. It’d be tight, but after taking in the Gasparilla Bowl on the night of the 20th, I could hop on an early-morning flight out of Tampa and be in Nassau two hours before kickoff.
Then I could enjoy the game for a couple hours and hop on a 5:19 p.m. flight out of Nassau, connecting through Miami and arriving in Birmingham, Ala. around 11 p.m. — well ahead of the Birmingham Bowl the next day at noon. After taking in the game in Birmingham, I’d rent a car and drive to Mobile for the Dollar General Bowl later that night.
Tumblr media
The SoCal group isn’t exactly following this plan, but here’s an extremely general outline of how you could travel to and from the 18 bowls on their list.
I factored in food and drinks at $75 per day. I considered things like rental car costs ($60 per day as needed, $35 for gas fill-ups as needed) and ridesharing in places where a rental’s not needed. I also factored in money for souvenirs and some for incidentals.
For ticket costs, the rough get-in for most of the minor bowls is about $30 on the resale market. I’m not as resourceful as the “Bowlmageddon” group — which has ticket hookups for the Rose Bowl and National Championship — but I’m a Florida alum, so I’m fairly sure I can find a free or cheap seat at the Peach Bowl. I’d have couches to sleep on in Atlanta and some of the Texas sites. And like The Latitudes, I’m not above scalping.
“Heck, the first game, I bought on StubHub when I was in line,” Ostlund says. “All of these guys don’t come from a lot of money. I think they’re all entrepreneurial kinda guys that learned to go to things at a young age and would scalp tickets to get into a sporting event ... There’s always a way to get a ticket and get into a game if you’re resourceful.”
Ostlund’s chief concern about the group isn’t the monetary cost, but the human one. This is a stressful deal.
On the 15th, they somehow found a way to hit see all three halftime shows for the Celebration, Camellia, and New Orleans Bowls. They left after the first halftime and made it to Montgomery for kickoff. They stayed through halftime of that one, hanging out with former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville and the bowl committee’s chairman. Then they made it to New Orleans right as the second quarter ended.
After that, they faced some tire-related adversity ...

... but still got to South Florida in plenty of time for the Boca Raton Bowl on Dec. 18:

“I don’t want to act like we’re too unsafe, but I had that gas pedal pushed down pretty far [on the 15th] to get us to that New Orleans game,” Ostlund says. “So that was really tough physically and logistically. I think what will be hard is these guys not wearing on each other as we get deeper into this. There’s not as many, but you know there’s things that we’re all needed for at home, as well, that are tugging on us.”
Beyond their business responsibilities, there’s a little holiday right in the middle of the bowl calendar. In the way things sometimes just find a way to work out, Christmas Day falls on a Tuesday, which means the 23rd is a Sunday and Christmas Eve is a Monday. Bowls don’t like to compete with the NFL. The Hawaii Bowl’s not even on Christmas Eve this year, for the third time ever.
That means that the group gets a Christmas break. That break might be why the group’s described it as a 22-day trip, though it’s 24 on the calendar from start to end. Ostlund will fly to see his family and then rejoin the group on the Texas Loop.
“Thank God,” he says. “We’d all be divorced.”
So, if you’re at a bowl game, look out for a bunch of guys in “Bowlmageddon” shirts.
“We didn’t even know that people would really take an interest in this, Ostlund says. “We were just gonna do it for the fun of doing it. Now there’s a little bit of pressure with everybody knowing.”
USC not going bowling doesn’t mean this group was content to sit around. If they make it through this stretch, they’ll be in Santa Clara on Jan. 7, maybe getting some record recognition of their own before college football crowns its champion. And even if not, Ostlund sees a bigger benefit:
“We’re having the time of our lives.”

Hawaeeeee
October 16
We started the trip and early on the Monday and Ubered to the airport. Our Uber guy, Jermaine, was super nice and chatty which started our trip off right. It was pretty early at the airport but for some reason the border control line was super long and I had to line up by myself for 45 minutes or so. I think something must have happened because everyone was on high alert. It was a safe flight so that is all that matters. We had a short layover in Chicago where we stuffed ourselves with food and stole some cup noodles for the next 9 hour flight to Honolulu. This was a smart move because United did not give us food as it was considered a domestic flight (we’re going to try avoiding United from now on…). We watched Pacific Rim which ended up being amazing!
We finally landed in Oahu at around 2 in the afternoon and waited in line for our rental car. They didn’t have our compact car so gave us a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and it was huge! But overall a fun ride. We quickly found the R&B / hip hop station, found some party jams (Bank Account – 21 Savage; Rake It Up – 21 Yo Gotti; Bodak Yellow – Cardi B; Young Dumb & Broke – Khalid) that stayed on repeat the entire trip. The freeway to our first resort, Aulani Disney, was on the west side of the island. We arrived around 4, got lei’d up properly, and found ourselves in a beautiful room overlooking the pool. Changing quickly into our swim gear, we walked around the beach / infinity pool / lazy river, ate some food, and made a reservation to eat at the restaurant downstairs. At 6 or so, we took a nap and set an alarm for 1 hour, just, as a power nap before dinner. However, the alarm didn’t ring and we woke up at 11 and missed dinner entirely. LOL! We kept sleeping.
October 17
The morning started off nice and early with some good, ol’ Mickey D’s (thanks jet lag). They served spam with the classic Big Breakfast and the most unexpected taro pie (they didn’t have the haupia pie). It was flaky, crispy and gooey inside – yum. We stopped by Pearl Harbour “just because” but it was a bit underwhelming despite its historic influence. The morning was still young so we quickly hopped on the highway and drove to the north shore. The Dole Plantation was our next stop and we got there just as it was opening. No lineups! We took a train ride around the plantation and ate some Dole Whip – it was delicious! So sweet that the pineapple stick on the side seemed sour in comparison, but perfectly cold for the hot day. The crowds and tour buses poured in after so we quickly drove to our next stop, the famous Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. Celine had the original flavour (a garlic version) but I decided to try the spicy, which came with a warning that you couldn’t get any refunds for it. Big mistake because it was so HOT, I drank the entire bottle of Powerade. We then visited some nearby shops and continued driving along the north shore until we reached the Banzai Pipeline. This is where people surf Hawaii’s biggest waves! It was intense. In our sweaty clothes, we walked around the outlet shops and at night, drove back into Honolulu to eat at this amazing Japanese restaurant called Sushi Murayama. The 10-course omakase dinner was $75 per person and it was amazing and totally worth it! We left full and happy. There was plenty of food, super fresh ingredients, and an entertaining sushi chef. Vince can’t stop thinking about the king clam sushi we had. It was probably one of my best experiences eating. See our food video for highlights. Oh yea the car was parked in one of those automated stacked parking lots which was very cool! Very SF.
October 18
The agenda for this day was optimistic and we accomplished it all! Kick-starting it all was a drive through the rain across the island, through Honolulu and to the east end of the island to hike up the Koko Crater Railway Tracks. We thought starting early would allow us to finish before the sun hit its peak but unfortunately for us the sun started beating down on us as the thousands of steps slowed our pace. The tracks quickly turned from a comfortable walk to almost climbing vertically and at some points, it was dangerous to cross between rails. It was so hot, Celine felt a little lightheaded – definitely different from hiking in Scandinavia! Regardless, we made it to the top and the view was breathtaking from all sides. We saw the entire coastline and enjoyed the fresh air and celebrated our triumphant ascent to the top. Going down was another struggle LOL. By the time we got down it was lunchtime so we ate at a local sushi restaurant.
The next stop was Hanauma Bay to snorkel but the parking lot was full. We ended up driving the cost to the Lanai Lookout and made it all the way to Alan Davis Beach / Pele’s Chair. This tiny beach was certainly off the beaten path and was known for mini cliff diving. It was essentially an edge where you could jump into the ocean, and the rocks off the shore were big enough to block all oncoming waves. It was super fun and we got some great Go Pro shots! Afterwards, we chilled out at Sandy Beach, apparently the beach with the most number of injuries per year due to its dangerous waves. We sat on the beach and watched surfers get battered. Before dinner, we stopped across the resort to buy some magnets and then ate at the Makahiki Buffet inside Aulani. All-you-can-eat oysters! Poke! What a great spread. We tucked in for our last night in Oahu.
October 19
Our flight to Maui was in the early afternoon so we had some time to grab a bite in Honolulu after grabbing breakfast to go from the Ulu Café. We ate at Marukame Udon, one of Celine’s favourites, before taking a short flight to the next island. Our rental car here was a sedan so driving was easier. We got some shave ice, which had peach, strawberry and other citrus flavours, from Ululani's, dropped our stuff off at our hotel – the Maui Beach Hotel (ghetto AF) – and drove up Haleakala National Park to see the sunset. The rode up was very windy and took over an hour. By the time we got to the top, we had to fully gear up and wear every piece of clothing available. The parking was horrendous and most people just parked randomly in the lot or on the winding mountain road. The sunset was beautiful and I would have enjoyed it way more if I was freezing, literally. Vince even put up his hood. I was exhausted on the drive down the mountain and since we arrived at Mama’s Fish House (widely known as the best restaurant on the entire island) an hour before our booking, we took a nap. It was glorious. Much needed before our meal! The cocktail and plates were exceptional, and service was entertaining. I would definitely go back.
October 20
We found this amazing bakery / diner called Stillwell’s in Kahului and had breakfast there. We ordered spam and stuff and a baked good to celebrate Celine’s 28th birthday! Yay! Then we drove around aimlessly to look for the Lahaina Pali Trail but did not find it so ended up getting to Wailea Beach Resort earlier. We dropped down our stuff and went to the beach beside Turtle Town and relaxed a bit. The water was so nice but unfortunately we saw no turtles. Then we went back to the resort and got our room. It was so nice! Architecture and design was minimalist and contemporary and we loved it. We spent the next little while on the private Wailea Beach (which interestingly enough had no little rocks anywhere and had the most perfect sand bottom so you could wade out) and then changed to film our Save the Date video. The sound was prerecorded so we just had to do the video portion – a trade secret. It was a race against time because the sun was setting and every second counted! We finally found a great spot down near the water where the waves were crashing gently against the rocks. It turned out amazing, as predicted. Next we made our way to dinner at the Morimoto at the Andaz Hotel to celebrate Celine’s birthday! We had a fabulous meal of tuna, foie gras and duck, and it was great, but not as surprising and delightful as Murayama.
October 21
Breakfast was memorable this morning. We ate at Nalu’s South Shore Grill where I had an acai berry coconut flake granola bowl. SO AMAZING! Celine chickened out and got an ahi tuna benedict. Then we made our way up the north-west shore of Maui and passed by some really neat little towns. We stopped by the Lahaina Front Street and did some outlet / street shopping. Then we grabbed some poke from a highly-rated alcohol store on Yelp (Tamura’s Fine Wine), dropped off our stuff off at the Aston Maui Kaanapli Villas, and went to our pre-booked Old Lahaina Luau. The weather was perfect and we walked in as VIPs to the luau. It was a premium buffet that featured a roasted pig with a long show showcasing traditional dancing and chanting. It was really beautiful, watching the sun set in the background and having unlimited drinks…except for the men thrusting their junk everywhere during their solo dance and us sometimes getting cramps in our legs because we were sitting in the traditional style on the floor instead of at the tables and chairs. We drove quickly back to Kaanapali and settled in for the night.
October 22
We woke up a bit early to hit the beach first thing before the crowds. The water was a bit chilly but still fantastic. Packing up quickly, we grabbed food at Mickey D’s again before visiting the Dragon’s Teeth attraction beside the fancy, Ritz-Carlton Resort in north Maui. The rocks were jagged and impressive but the most impressive were the waves that devoured the rocks below. I did not want to fall in. Next, we drove up to see the Nakalele Blowhole and heart rock. The sun was brutal but we made it. Sweaty and stuff, we ate back at Lahaina at Longhi’s, and then found a public beach shower to clean ourselves before the flight home with the toiletries from the resort. We found a nice shower that was away from the crowds but still on the edge of the highway. The water was cold but all in all it felt great. Worth it! First time showering in public! Before the flight, we had to eat but Kahului was literally foodless. There was a highly rated sushi restaurant in a nearby town but we drove by and it looked sketchy AF. We ended up eating at Whole Foods: ramen, mochi and a delicious smoothie. Then we flew home.
Hawaii is awesome. We think it was our best trip to date, and thank goodness we both got a tan!

1. Tenderize Steak With Vinegar And Olive Oil
Flickr / Joe
Instead of banging on it with a mallet, fill a deep platter with threetablespoons of vinegar and one tablespoon of olive oil. Place the steak inside and allow to soak for several hours, turning it over every hour.
Mrs. Warren explains that the method is, “employed in many of the first-class hotels and restaurants,” and able to “transform a tough piece of beefsteak into a nutritiousand tender one.”
2. Add Cream Of Tartar To Homemade Icing
Flickr / Cassidy
Mrs. Warren recommends adding a one-third teaspoon dash of cream of tartar, which is a spice unrelated to the sauce frequently found with fish dishes, to your homemade icing to “improve” it.
According to Cakespy, this works by helping to stabilize the other ingredients.
3. Slam Your Pan To Keep Cakes From Falling
Flickr / Southern Foodways Alliance
In her wise words, “If you will slam a pan up and down several times after pouring your cake dough into it, the cake won’t fall when you turn it in the stove.”
4. Sprinkle Sage To Get Rid Of Kitchen Pests

If your kitchen is like mine, you’ve probably come to expect an invasion of ants lining your counters every summer despite your attempts to keep them at bay.
Mrs. Warren advises placing small bunches of green sage around the counters and pantry shelves as a natural solution to ward them off.
5. Keep Pies Juicy With Paper Straws

The straw, “such as is used at soda fountains,” can be cut in half and placed into the dough and filling while baking. This will allow the steam to escape and keep the fruit’s juice from running over the edge.
6. Use Cold Water To Keep A Sliced Lemon Fresh
Flickr / Calgary Reviews
If you don’t need the full lemon for your recipe, cover it with cold water andchange out the water on a weekly basis.
7. Use An Apple To Keep Cakes Moist
Flickr / LearningLark
This can work for bread or other items you’re afraid of drying out, too. Simply place aripe, peeled apple withthe baked goodto retain moisture.
8. Remove Burnt Taste From Overcooked Veggies Using Water
Flickr / Naotake Murayama
Mrs. Warren recommends placingwhatever you were cooking the vegetables with on a pan filled with cold water and removing any covering from the veggies. Let it sit for a few minutes, then transfer to a new pan or dish and the burnt flavor won’t follow with them.
9. Use Cold Water To Prevent Broken Egg Yolks
Flickr / Kai Hendry
Poached eggs are notoriously difficult to get right without breaking, but Mrs. Warren claims that dipping the saucer you’re using in cold water before cracking your egg into it will keep it from being so vulnerable.
10. Use Biscuit Dough To Get Rid Of Cabbage Odor

Cabbage can be a delicious ingredient, but the odor it emits while cooking can make your family reluctant to believe that. While boiling the leafy greens, plop some biscuit dough wrapped in cloth along with it andthe aroma will be much more pleasant.
11. Brown Pies With Sweet Milk

Mrs. Warren’s secret to making sure her pies always had a perfect golden-brown crust was to grab a cloth and wipe a layer of sweet milk over the top crust.

Last 22
It’s not that I just wake up,
But good morning
Today is a day before my birthday
But surprisingly
I didn’t feel nervous at all…
I usually keep wondering
How should I wait for my birthday
Tumblr media
Ah, lately Like reading novel aloud,
Reading it aloud
Is far slower than silent reading
But you can properly grasp the book’s content
So please try it!
Joking around
Wearing a sash
With “Today’s main star” written on it
Has always been my dream! It’s me Murayama.
Tumblr media
I’ve never done that in my life,
So I would be happy if I can do it
On my birthday someday. Or maybe
I will buy the sash myself!
Tumblr media
When it come to AKB48’s birthday song,
People always go with “Namida Surprise”
But as for me, I like “Tanjobi no Yoru”.
