Hello, I wanted to ask you for your interpretations about the song Ibutsunaiishi from Musubi no Hibiki, Hajimari no Ne. In the musical, Mutsu starts it off with a soft song with no background music, then the others sing itsunaiishi followed by it. In the album, he doesn’t sing it. In fact, there’s no studio version of him singing it; only in the musical. In your opinion, why do you think they added that part, and what do you think of Ibtsunaiishi in terms of connecting the song with the story?

the song Mutsu sings is the second verse to the Yosakoi-bushi. It’s somewhat odd they didn’t include this verse on the CD, while they did add the first verse as a 0:52 second song. I suppose they didn’t want to include another very short song. It’s only three lines after all.

♪I will show you Mimase. ♪Open up Urado.♪Katsurahama is famous for its moon. 

Within the musical, I think it serves a purpose though. It gives us a look into Mutsunokami’s mind, if you will. The yosakoi-bushi is a folk song from Koichi, Tosa. And the way he sings it... I think we may assume he still thinks fondly of those days and possible longs to go back and meet his old master again. Despite that, when Izuminokami asks about Sakamoto Ryoma’s death. Mutsunokami plays it cool and acts like he’s processed the death of his old master and moved on. In the musical I suppose the songs serves to give an extra layer to his character. He isn’t just a happy-go-lucky guy. He actually cared about his old master and misses him and their time together.

After that follows “ibitsu na ishi”.

♪The fast-moving river collides and splits.♪Irregular stones, none are the same thing.♪Exposed to the rain and wind, we get soaked and tumble down.♪Irregular stones, none have the same shape.

♪Not allowed to make choices, we hope and pray. ♪Twisted minds, no feelings are the same.♪An unchangeable history, an unforgettable warmth.♪Different dying wishes, no life ends the same.

To be honest, I find it a pretty hard song to understand on a deeper level, because it gives a lot of messages. But I’ll try. I think, in a way, it represents the current state (of mind) of our Touken Danshi.

The first half is still rather general I'd say. The mention of irregular stones signifies how everyone is different. And we are all caught in the fast river of life. We don't get breaks. It's not easy. And on our way to become polished stones (carry out a mission) we bump into obstacles and are thrown on different paths. It addresses how everyone is struggling in their own way. Which is basically happening in this musical.

While the second half can be interpreted in a pretty general sense, I think it gets a bit more specific toward the Touken Danshi. It addresses (quite literally too) how they can't change history. They don't get to make the choice what's going to happen next. They have to kill Hijikata whether they want it or not. And yes, that messes with their minds and they all have different thoughts on that. And then the final lines touch onto the struggle how hard it is to just set the fond memories of the past aside and do what needs to be done. Each of their old masters left a different legacy/dying wish.

Altogether I think the song sums up where the Toukern Danshi are at pretty well. It's a reflection of their state of mind.

Um well, I’m going to end it here. I could probably talk about this in much more detail, but... this will have to do for now. It’s been a while since I watch the full musical, so maybe these song tie in with the story in more obvious ways than I can remember at this moment. xD Anyway, hope you enjoyed this answer.
