“But obviously he took the failures of some of his films very hard.” — ok but this is actually a theory a friend of mine and I have discussed since 2016. And it *kind of* explains the SoT.
It’s been said here before that Tom and Luke didn’t do their proper due diligence on 🐍 and he entered a PR-ship thinking it would get him some positive press because while 2015 was a prolific year for him, he didn’t have any real big hits. Crimson Peak was marketed terribly, which cost it audiences. High Rise was considered high-brow cinema which automatically counted out a lot of the movie-going public. While Only Lovers Left Alive was a critical hit, it wasn’t seen by a lot of audiences. I Saw the Light was the one though, my friend and I think, that broke the camels back, as it were.
Dude put his heart and soul into this role. He lived with a relative stranger for nearly a year, he dedicated himself to learning to sing differently, to speak with a specific accent, he ran himself (literally) into the ground to achieve Hank’s lank frame and almost skeletal look. He did all this to end up in a badly directed, poorly edited hot mess. He and Lizzie were the bright spots in it.
Coming off a year of semi-flops, he needed a pick me up. I just wish he would’ve let The Night Manager do that for him and not get involved with 🐍. (It was a huge hit in the UK; he should’ve trusted it would do the same in the US). That shit is always going to haunt him and make him look like a fool in a lot of the industry’s eyes, never mind the public (who rather forget easy.)
Since that year he doesn’t seem to put in quite the same effort he used to. Just my opinion!
I think you’re partly right- i’m sure he was disappointed especially about ISTL but I also want to believe that he cares more about the work than the popularity or awards and I think in all of those movies his performance was praised. That’s what he should’ve focused on and that’s also what his PR team should have told him to focus on rather than trying to make him a popular movie star by doing a stunt relationship and being at a big blockbuster action movie like KSI.

Betrayal being decided in Oct made me think about a few things. That he really wanted to take rest unless a fantastic offer came (I kind of imagined he might’ve wanted to give Richard II one last chance in 2018 spring). On the other hand, he could have gotten a stage project earlier if he wanted, given that he could make this happen within 1 month, with a famous director, medias all loving it. Didn’t Josie Rourke say Tom could? TBH I was skeptical then but now I could agree with her 1/3
(she might’ve known about Betrayal already). I don’t think ZA matters much to JLC. They happily plastered Tom’s face over their wall, flyer, newspaper, sold tickets with his name only. He very likely didn’t get film scripts but I argued in the past that he could’ve done at least voice works once or twice. But he did none. Radio silence except Wimbledon. Comic cons - for the 1st one, he might have not known about the Loki series, but for the 2nd-4th ones he def knew and probably did them 2/3
lest the character should be forgotten. IDK what he wants (decent projects & a more relaxed life?) and what his future projects will be. Well older Tom might become lazy! Hope his visit to LA means sth. Don’t think he flied 10 hrs to say good bye to his US agent. BTW not a great time for Brit character actors. Fassy & Garfield are going slow. BC doing anything (IMO), Eddie, doesn’t mind ensamble. Latter 2 are much busier, jabe better projects but not exactly the ones I expected from them. 3/3
Honestly, I’m with you about 99.9% on this. I’ve said in the past that the fact two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender wasn’t getting good scripts, as he said himself, meant that someone without an Oscar nom would get less. Some people chose to skewer me because “Tom wouldn’t be getting MF’s castoffs anymore”… NOT THE POINT, Barb. The point is, in general, there aren’t a lot of good scripts out there, period. And that in the hierarchy of things, Tom is down the list in general, due to lack of awards recognition in film/a bad PR spell. There’s a reason why some journos (not just me), last year, were saying that Tom should be heading off looking for those Oscar-bait/prestige roles post-Loki. They know he can do them, but he’s never been offered the chance, outside ISTL which could have been BoRhap level Oscar bait had the film been (even marginally) better/actually told a comprehensible story/re-edited/actually marketed properly by Sony and not dumped into the dead zone of release dates.
Good points about the other Brit actors. My personal feeling is that anything that requires a Brit actor in their 30s-40s currently gets sent to BC first, and he apparently has an inability to say no. The others have to hope for someone to remember them. And in part, I think that’s what the Craig’s dinner was about – not just the ‘being seen by paps’ part, but actually going to that restaurant to remind people/power brokers in Hollywood that Tom exists. Far easier to do that with two projects recently announced.
I do think Josie knew about Betrayal already, and realized she was almost spilling the beans there.
My only marginal disagreement is wrt the Cons. I think he at least kind of knew the Loki series was a possibility, maybe not when he signed on for Seattle, but certainly by the time it happened. Like, he could have signed on as a farewell/post-IW thing (because TH2 was there, Seb, Mackie, and Evans/Hemsworth were supposed to be), but then kept it going because he knew the series was coming up. And hey, he apparently had nothing else planned as of last summer, so yeah, you sign on to that. Hopefully with some creative control.
Anyway, sorry for the long essay.
