Shared from @godzilla1950 . At 1020 Thirteenth Ave.... situated on a boulevard with other large stately homes facing a park, is this handsome Tudor Revival mansion. Just kicking off a decade when Tudor style was the rage of the “Roaring 20’s”, the manse was completed in 1920. The home was built for the prominent the Cammack family who established their fortune in the insurance business. Various materials & textures are used in the facade to make this house a true eye pleaser. 🍃🌳🍃 Heavy shade is both a gift and a curse to the gardener. The gifts are obvious...shelter from the scorching sun and heat, evocative shadow play, a delicious sense of enclosure, and lower energy bills. But one downside is often overlooked: when we are fortunate enough to get summer rains (as we are now, though light)...little of that moisture is actually able to penetrate the dense leaf canopy, providing life-giving REAL moisture (rain, not hose water🙃). So plants that can handle DRY shade are indispensable to this kind of landscape. My go to plants? Boxwood, of course.Nandina, hellebores, plum yew, holly, monkey grass (yes, even 🐵 grass!) And other ground covers like mondo grass, vinca minor and lamium. Of course, EVERYTHING needs lots of moisture and tlc to get established, and supplemental water when summer heat flares. Add to my list please. Mobile on our mind! Shared from @godzilla1950 . At 1216 Government St....this incredibly spectacular QueenAnne mansion was built in 1901. It offers a dream feast for the eyes with all its outrageous details. Oddly I could find very little history on house other than the manse has had several names attached to it when I googled address: Tacon-Barfield-Gordon-Tissington. Tacon always appears first & comments on Tissington mentions this family occupied the mansion the longest. The house appears to still be privately owned. Any other info I welcome 🙏. 3/4 views only ... big honking tree in front that would be challenging to cut down!😉 Found vintage photos online of interiors taken in 1933 — staircase & of double-parlors. One parlor has an exquisite carved screen between columns.
